Dean Butler

I got the opportunity to meet Dean Butler on July 13th, 2002 at Walnut Grove. Here are some things I learned.

Me and Dean Butler

Dean Butler was born on May 20th, 1956 in Prince George, British Columbia. Located in Cananda. His family eventually moved to San Fransisco, California. He got into acting when he was a sophmore, so I'm guessing around 15 years old. He did some stage acting, and alot of TV. Some of his plays include Into the Woods, Fiddler on the Roof, Westside Story, and Death Trap. In May of 1979, he tryed out for the part of Almanzo on "Little House on the Prairie." He went to 4 interviews, and got the part. The first amazing experience with Michael Landon was when he went to one of the interviews. He said that while waiting for his audition, a guy came out of Susan Sukman's office and said-"Whatever you do, don't act." Dean said he got all confused-what does he mean don't act? Isn't that why I'm here? That's what I went to school for! Anyways, when he went in there, he found out why he shouldn't act-just be himself. Back to the Michael Landon thing-when Dean was reading the part, and Susan Sukman was reading Laura's part, he saw out of the corner of his eye, Michael Landon with his had sort of cupped to his eye-he was "framing" Dean, and all that good stuff. The part he read was the scene in "Back to School," of course, where him and Laura are riding in his buckboard, talking about the nicknames. He said that his job was to "love Laura."

Currently he lives in California, just below the Hollywood sign, and can be seen in commercials, including a Hardee's one. He also has judged a Miss America Pageant, plus some state pageants. You can sometimes see him on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," playing Hank, Buffy's dad. Don't miss it!! :) Thanks to Dean Butler and everyone who made this day special!
