Review

Overall this was an excellent episode. Yes, it did lack in some areas, but in my opinion it was well done. There was excellent acting from both the guest stars and the cast. There was also some character development which essential to any fan! And my favorite aspect of this episode? The kiss in the jail!! But we will get to that point time in due time.

Acting

Well I have to applaud everyone who acted in this episode. It was all very well done. Even though the plot didn't call for that much emotion in my opinion, the actors never the less managed to run with what they had.

I first have to applaud my favorite actress in this show, Rachel Blakely. She managed to squeeze out some very good emotions in different scenes. For example in the scene where Marguerite and Roxton talk about how they never should have gone to the village you can almost feel her regret. Also in that very same scene, her hesistency to cauterize Roxton's wound is almost tangable. Rachel also did an excellent job when she both suggested her idea to escape, and when she finally met up with the rest of the explorers. Her expression while the others praised her, was almost guiddy. While Marguerite definately deserved.

The next acting which deserves a complement was that of the actor who played Edgar Gray... sorry I couldn't remember and can't find his name. His character was the standard cartoon villain. He has no morals, no reservations and is ready to use anyone to get what he wants, and that is revenge against the Masked Bandit. (BTW, did anyone ever find out what her name was?) Not the most indept character, but I found that he played it to hilt. Never once did you want to like him, which is a problem that sometimes befalls the actors playing the bad guys. (Whether that's on purpose or not, it still bugs me. We should always have one villain that's down right bad.)

Things That I Loved...

There are a lot of things in this episode that I liked. For example all the constant banter between Marguerite and Roxton was very nice. You could tell that they were trying to relieve the pressure of the situation by joking. I also liked when Marguerite tried to barter her freedom with her gems. That was very typical of the character, and I liked that the writers kept that with her through the whole episode. Then when that didn't work she decides to use her charms. Although in comparison to other episodes you can really tell that she didn't mean it. It was most definitely a last ditch efforts.

The plan that Marguerite comes up with in the end was also a real treat. This is quite a different idea for her, and you can almost see her hesitate before she goes out and says it. I really like this because it isn't normal for her, and it's nice to see the character evolve a little.

At the very end Marguerite gives her the gems. Something she would never do before. I was quiet pleased to see that. Along with everyone thanking Marguerite at the end.

Nitpicks

I know that nitpicks are annoying, but I have to make them here. Hey, you all know you love to rant.

First, and probably the biggest thing. What was the Masked Bandits name? I don't know if I just didn't catch it, but never once did I hear it, and I watched the ep. a couple times before I wrote this. I think that they didn't give her a name because they wanted you to concentrate on more why she was doing this, than who she was, but still it annoyed me.

Second but probably less significant, they said that other's had come to the village, so wouldn't you think that others know about the fissure? I mean eventually someone would get curious about why visitors were always hung. Or was it that because it was only two times a year that no one ever got curious enough to ask?

Well this isn't quite a nitpick, but I'm going to say it anyways. The fissure idea, I'm sorry, but it's not a new idea. I know it was just a plot devise, and when I tried to think of some other way to make the show work I couldn't, but I couldn't help thinking throughout the show, "This has been done before, a lot." Am I being to picky? Maybe... oh well.

Favorite Scene

Open Scene

Marguerite and Roxton in jail cell.

Marguerite is siting on the floor, stroking Roxton's head, who is lying on the cot.

Roxton: "You know I was dreaming...You were feeding me grapes on the bank of a stream."

Marguerite: (checks Roxton's wound) "That's what we should have done."

Roxton: "You saved my life."

Marguerite: "You promised to save me from the hangmen."

Roxton: "Is that the only reason?"

Marguerte: "No"

They kiss!!!

Roxton: "I should get shot more often."

Marguerite: (laughs) "Not till you get us out of here."

Roxton: "I really must be dreaming."

Marguerite kisses Roxton on the forehead.

Roxton: "Careful Marguerite. It's not to late change my mind."

Marguerite: "Now is not the time to stop for a drink!"

Marguerite/Masked Bandit: "As you have made others suffer, so too shall you."

Roxton: "Seems like everything is back to normal."
Marguerite: "Yes, well normal seems horrible to me."
