A young man stands tied to a post weeping, surrounded by tar-soaked tinder,
begging for his life. He proclaims his innocence. This is the fortified encampment
of The Christecs, a people lost in time who practice a hybrid of Conquistador
Inquisition, Catholicism and Aztec paganism. The booming accusatory voice
belongs to the High Priest, Tolmac, who stands before his people with a lighted
torch in his hand preaching against evil and the devil. While exploring a
lakefront, Challenger, Summerlee and Veronica hear the scream of a little
girl drowning. They pull her from the water and Summerlee revives her. Tolmac
sees this and labels Summerlee a devil. Veronica escapes, but Summerlee will
be put on trial for heresy and witchcraft. Challenger will defend him and
if found guilty, both men will be burned at the stake. It will be up to Roxton
and the others to save their friends.
