But their relationship is strictly "no emotional feelings involved" until Steve confesses how much he likes her, while on a camping trip. This starts out their real relationship. He is scared by the thought of fatherhood. But he soons sees that that is what he wants. He proposes to her but she turns him down, scared that he won't live up to--her expectations. When Steve asks her a second time, during an ultrasound, she accepts. Janet has an emergency C-section but thankfully, the baby and her are in good health. Janet names their new daughter Madeline. Back at the paper, Steve and Janet get an offer from someone to buy The Beat. Entailed with that, is Janet being editor of the new paper and Steve being a stay-at-home dad. They try it out but it causes more trouble than necessary. When Steve suggests starting a new paper, she agrees.

While on a weekend away, Janet mentions to Steve that she wants to have another child. He agrees and they ::ahem:: start right away. Janet quickly gets pregnent and starts off a successful pregnency. But, near the end of her term, when Steve gets Maddy sick, Janet rushes home. On her way, she gets into a major car accident and blacks out.

As a result of the accident, Janet suffers from internal bleeding. She is forced into labor but the baby is born dead. The internal bleeding is stopped and Janet starts a long recovery. When Janet is recovered, she tells Steve she wants to have another child, kind of in replace of the one she lost. Her doctor conducts many tests and concludes that she cannot have children because of an unremovable blockage in her fallopian tube. She is deeply upset by this news. She takes it very hard and falls into a depression. Steve has no luck getting her out. But Valerie does. Valerie is actually the only friend that sticks by Janet with everything. She is the one who really helps her. Val is successful and Janet slowly makes progress. But when Valerie comes to her for help and informs her that she, herself is pregnent. This, hurts Janet and she gets into a big fight with Val. She is mad at Val for getting pregnent knowing that Janet can never ever have children again. Val did not intentionally get pregnent. Steve gets caught in the middle but after some sense is knocked into Janet and Val, they make up. Janet then slowly eases back into the normal everyday life she used to have.
