Elizabeth joined the ER in season four. Under Romano's sponsorship, she came to America to get some trauma experience. Later, Elizabeth decided to break free of Romano and took charge of a research study of her own. She is an exceptionally talented surgeon who gave Peter Benton serious competition. She also gave him an opportunity to lighten up a little. The two of them got involved despite Benton's reservations about dating white women. Elizabeth's unavailability to date Romano led him to drop her sponsorship and left her scrambling for a way to stay in America. |
In season five Elizabeth decided to remain in America and become an intern again despite an offer from her father to join his practice. This decision led to her making a tragic mistake while on her 36th hour on duty. She gave a patient an overdose of medication which led to Elizabeth publically criticizing the intern system at M&M. She broke up with Benton early in the season and spent most of her time focusing on her career. She created a trauma fellowship so she could work in the ER (away from Romano) but Benton was given the position instead. Her personal life picked up again at the end of the season when she and Mark stumbled upon one another socially. |

Elizabeth's career was given a boost early in season six when Romano promoted her to the position of Associate Chief of Surgery. She encountered career difficulties in a different form this season when her ethics were put to the test during the Dean Rollins case. She ultimately broke free of him only to encounter more difficulties when her mother paid her a surprise visit. Elizabeth was chagrined to learn that her mother was having an affair with Mark's father because she was afraid it would complicate things. Fortunately, Mark and Elizabeth's relationship stayed strong. |
Elizabeth's personal life was at a peak early in season seven. She and Mark became engaged and bought a house. They also found out they were expecting their first child. Professionally, Elizabeth hit a low when she rushed on a patient's surgery which led to his paralysis and her first lawsuit. She was nervous to return to surgery after this but soon had bigger problems to deal with when she began experiencing problems in her pregnancy. The baby survived though, and Elizabeth was finally able to marry Mark. At the end of April, Elizabeth gave birth to her first child, Ella Greene. |
