Written by Katie. It's a story about Julie being released and her and Frank trying to rebuild there lives and reattach with those they've pushed away. There are other PC people in here too and a Joe and Karen story happens in it as well. (Concluded) Chapter 1 It is a sunny morning in May, but Frank has no time to enjoy it. He has just arrived at the mental facility where Julie is to be released from today. He signs in and walks down the hall. Millions of thoughts are racing through his head, and his stomach is in knots. He knows she still might not want to see him but she and the baby she finally told him about through Kevin they are all he has left. As selfish as it might be he needs her right now like he's never needed anything before. He is now at her door. He takes a deep breath says a little prayer and knocks. Julie: Come in. Frank opens the door slowly and like a scared little kid who isn't sure if he's done something wrong he peeks his head in. Then slowly comes in the rest of the way and leans against the wall. Julie is sitting on her bed with her suitcase at her side. Chapter 2 Julie: Hi there. Frank: Uh hi, you look good. Julie smiles a little. Julie: Thanks. Frank: So you about ready to get out of here? Julie: Definitely! There's just a little more paper work to be done and then I'll be free to go. Although I'm not sure what to. Frank: You still have a home with me, That is if you want it? Julie shakes her head and smiles. Julie: I should have known I couldn't shake you. I don't know why I bothered trying. Yes I still want it, next to this baby. you and the house are all I have. Frank: Well I'm certainly glad to have you back. You and the baby are everything to me. Your all I have as well. Julie: I've seen the papers, and Kevin has filled me in on the rest of it. I'm sorry, I hope someday you and Joe will be close again and you will be an EMT once more. Frank starts crying. He didn't mean to he just can't help it. Julie gets up comes over to him and wraps her arms around him. Julie: It's going to be okay, really it will. I love you Frank I always have and I always will. Frank thinks of pulling back but it has been so long since he felt such warmth and compassion directed towards him he just can't. Frank: If you loved me why did you push me away so hard? Julie takes his hands and leads him to the bed, they sit side by side. Julie: Frank I pushed you away not because I didn't love you but because I did. Frank looks confused. Frank: I don't understand. Julie smiles patiently. Julie: Listen to me and I'll explain. Chapter 3
Frank is sitting with Julie waiting to hear how she could have loved him, and yet pushed him away. Oh to be loved how he longs for it to be true. Julie: Though I was insane there was still a part of me that was still very sane. That part is the part that loves you. Frank I thought my life was over I figured I'd never see the light of day again. And I know you, you are loyal to a fault. I new that if I let you, you would be near every chance you got. You would spend you life waiting for me to get well and be released. I didn't believe those things were possible. But I new you would never give up. While a very selfish part of me liked the Idea and wanted you close, the other part of me couldn't stand the Idea of letting you waste your life away. I felt you deserved so much better. I wanted the world for you and I felt you couldn't have that if you were waiting on me. But I new know loving plea would break your loyalty. So has heart breaking as it was for me, I realized that the only way to brake your loyalty was to break your heart. I hated every second of it but I believed in the long run it would be the best thing for you. I never fathomed I'd get well. Do you understand? Frank sits silently taken aback by what he has just heard. Frank: I…I don't quiet know what to say. I guess thank you. But Julie you have to know going on with my life thinking you hated me didn't bring me happiness it just made everything that much harder. Julie: Oh Frank I had know Idea the world was going to cave in on you like it did. If I had I wouldn't of pushed you away. But by the time it was all happening and I learned of it We were already far apart. I prayed for you and cried for you every night. I often hoped that you felt love coming to you in the night. If you did that was me. Frank smiles and they embrace. Julie: So are things any better with Joe? Frank sadly shakes his head. Frank: No, we are so far apart right now I can barely make him out. Julie: I'm so sorry. It is a shame that Chris was able to destroy such a great bond. Frank: Well Joe, and I did are part to. Julie: Are you still hurt that Joe didn't lie. Frank: I guess I need to clarify that. You see my whole life I have taken care of and protected my brother. If he did something that made Dad mad I'd say I did it so Dad would beat me instead. If Joe wanted something and Dad wouldn't buy it I would empty out all my saved money and buy it for him. If he needed help with his homework, someone to practice ball with, or just someone to talk to, no matter what I was doing I would drop everything. In high school he was accused of cheating on a test. I interrogated every kid in the class until the culprit was found. Then Dad died, and there was only enough money for one of us to go to med. school and it was still going to be tight. So even though I had dreamed of nothing else my whole life but of being a doctor I gave up my dream and helped Joe become a doctor. Joe knows all of this. He also knows that if Chris had set him up, I would have done what ever it took to clear his name. I would have taken a picture of him and Chris to the drug store and had the guy ID who picked up the drugs. I would have had him ID the voice of the caller who called in the prescriptions using a tape recorder, I would have done what ever it took. So with all this in mind I thought for sure I could count on Joe, when he didn't it baffled me and I made a stupid request. I think I thought it would snap him into reality and he would start investigating. But it just made him that much more unwilling to help. Julie: That's awful no wonder you are still so far apart, doesn’t Joe realize the truth? Frank: No he doesn’t care. The truth is I have learned that my brother is great at being helped but lousy at giving anything but medical help. He is a fair weather brother, I see that now. Just then there is a knock at the door. Julie: Come in. Kevin walks in. Kevin: The paper work is all done you are free to go. Frank looks at Julie and smiles Frank: Are you ready? Julie: As ready as I'll ever be. Frank picks up Julie's suit case, and takes her by the hand, and they walk out together. Chapter 4 Frank and Julie arrive home and go inside. After she gets settled in they sit down at the kitchen table to have some lunch. Julie: I never remember it being this quiet here. Frank: Well Lark is at school, and everyone else has moved out. Julie: Seem nervous is everything okay? Frank: I have been working on getting my old boss to rehire me as an EMT. And he agreed to meet with me at 2 this after noon. I wish it could have been for a different day. I'd like to be with you on your first day out but I've been begging and pleading for awhile now with no luck. So now that he has finally said he would speak to me I can't very well say not today. Julie: Frank that's great! I'd offer to go with you, but it might be better if I'm not there. Frank smiles. Frank: I wish you could be there to, but I think it might not go over to well. Julie: Well you go and get your job back and I will make you an out of sight dinner tonight to celebrate. They kiss. Julie: Oh Frank the baby it's kicking! Frank: Really! Julie takes his hand and puts it on her stomach. Julie: Can you feel that? Frank: Wow, I think we got a little athlete in there. Julie laughs. Julie: Or a little ballerina. They kiss. A little while later Frank is sitting nervously in his ex-boss’s office. Boss: Well Frank you have been sending us your blood work for the past several months. And it appears that you have been staying clean. Frank: And I intend to stay that way. Please I know you had no choice at the time but to fire me. But you can see I'm clean, and you know I'm a good EMT. Please let me have another chance. Boss: Frank you were a great EMT. And I know you are clean now. And I believe that you intend to stay clean. But all recovering addicts do and yet that doesn’t mean they will. Frank: I realize that. Mr. Fair I want to be an EMT to bad I want my life back. You can rehire me on what ever terms you like. Constant drug testing, me seeing a therapist what ever I just want my life back. Mr. Fair leans back and sighs. He thinks in silence for several tense minutes. Mr. Fair: I've made my decision. Frank takes a deep breath. Frank: What is it? Mr. Fair looks at Franks eager, and apprehensive face. Mr. Fair: I would be crazy not to give you a chance, however I would also be crazy not to proceed cautiously. So while I'm offering you job back to you, I want you to listen carefully because there are some definite stipulations on this. First off you will have to submit to weekly drug tests. They will be given at random, and you will not know until we ask you when they are going to occur. This will last indefinitely. I also want you to go to drug counseling for at least 6 months. I will keep in regular contact with your therapist to make sure you're going. If you deviate from these things at all, you will be fired on the spot, and I won't be giving you another chance. Do I make myself clear? Frank: Yes sir, I will comply with all of that. Thank you so much for giving me another chance I promise you won't be sorry. Mr. Fair: I better not be. Frank: You won't sir. I will do my best I swear. Mr. Fair smiles broadly, and extends his hand to Frank. They shake firmly. Mr. Fair: Then welcome back. I'll expect to see you here at 9 am sharp. Frank: I'll be here. Thank you. Frank leaves happily. He calls Julie from the car to tell her the good news. As he drives the rest of the way home he can't help but think that his life is all getting back on track. When he gets home he opens the door and calls for Julie. She calls from the upstairs and he follows her voice to his bed room. When he opens the door he can't believe his eyes. She is standing completely naked in front of him. Julie: I am in need of some TLC form my EMT. Frank walks towards her mesmerized by her body. She pulls him close and kisses him with such a kiss that his whole body curls. He runs his hands over her smooth body, as he places hot kisses on her neck. She feverishly tears at his clothes and as his shirt, and pants fall to the floor he swoops her up in his arms and lays her across his bed. She runs her hands along his strong chest as he gazes deeply into her brown alluring eyes. He then pulls her to him in his stealth arms, and presses there bodies together until they are nearly one. She runs her fingers down his back, as he places burning kisses everywhere. They moan each others names as there fire reaches to explosive peaks of passion. Chapter 5 The next morning Frank and Julie awoke still clinging to one another after their night of heavy passion. It was a big day for both of them. Today was Frank’s first day back on the job as an EMT and Julie had to go to GH for a check up with her OB. They hurriedly and nervously got ready for there day's. Frank: What time is you appointment? Julie: 11:30 I don't know how long I'll be though, I'm sure that Dr. Medows is not looking forward to seeing me. I may be waiting for hours. Frank: Call me as soon as you get out. Julie: I will. What time do you get off tonight? Frank: around 7:00. Hey how about dinner at the grill, say 7:30. Julie: Well I guess if I'm going start facing people I might as well make it today. Sure that sounds great. They kiss and go on their way. Later at the hospital Julie has just gotten out of a very tense exam. She is heading towards the elevator, her nerves feel shot. When she suddenly hears someone call out her name. She turns and sees Karen coming happily towards her. Karen: Hay Julie it's great to see you out and about. What are you up to? Julie smiles and shakes her head. Julie: I guess some things never change. I'm okay Karen I just got done with my OB appointment. Karen: Everything is okay with the baby isn't it? Julie: Oh the baby is fine, healthy as can be. Karen: Then what's wrong you look upset. Julie: Not everyone is as excepting and forgiving as you and Frank Karen. Especially when they were friends of doctor Mays, like doctor Medows for instance. Karen: Oh it didn't go so well huh. Julie: Well I guess that depends on how you look at it. What do you call a grown women nearly jumping under her desk when you raise your hand to cover your mouth when you cough. Or someone asking you to were restraints while she examines you. I know I deserve it but it still hurts. Karen: I can't believe she acted that way, that is so unprofessional. I'm so sorry you had to put up with that regardless of her reasons should had no right to ask you to wear restraints you are well now! Julie: Well I think it's going to take some time for people to believe that. I have to go now Karen it was nice seeing you. Karen: It was good seeing you to. Karen gives Julie a wink as she gets on the elevator and says, Hey Julie next time you have an appointment with her if she treats you that way again just offer her a piece of gum. Julie: KAREN! The elevator doors shut. Chapter 6 It is later that night and Frank and Julie have just gotten home from dinner. Julie: Thanks for a nice evening. I’m sorry we had to go some where else for dinner. Frank: That’s okay. I just couldn’t take the way we were being treated there. You have paid your debt. Not serving us, and then being so rude as to ask if we wouldn’t mind eating with out knives to that the other people wouldn’t get scared. Well it was just to much. Julie: It is going to be hard for people to except me back. Besides I liked my hot dog in the park. Frank smiles and takes her in his arms. Frank: You are so amazing. Julie: You think so. Frank pulls her close and kisses her passionately. Frank: Would you like a demonstration of just how amazing I think you are. Julie: Oh please do show. Frank picks her up and carries her to his room. Laying her on the bed he runs his fingers through her curls, and strokes her face. She his shirt as he pulls her blouse off. Then as they continue to feverishly undress her, he plants loving kisses all over her body. They then fall together as one, rising to the peaks of passion unaware of where each ends and the other begins. In the morning they get ready for there day. Each weary of what awaits. Julie: So do you think your second day back will be better then your first? Frank: It can’t be worse. I walked in there to hoots of hey druggie need a fix. Then Mr. Fair comes out and in front of everyone introduces me to my new therapist. Then he says it’s time for my weekly drug test. I know I agreed to it but you would think he would have tried to be a little more discreet. Julie walks over and hugs him. Julie: I’m so sorry you didn’t deserve that. Frank: Oh well. So what are you going to be up to today? Julie: Karen and I are going shopping for clothes and baby stuff. Frank: How about if I drop you off on my way to work? Julie: Any excuse to spend more time with you. You know Frank together we are going to make it. We both fell badly but together we shall fly once more. Frank smiles. Frank: That’s a nice thought. They get in Franks rig and head off. Suddenly over the radio, comes the dispatchers frantic voice. Oh God Oh My God! All units respond all units respond at once! The Port Charles Elementary school as had a gas explosion. Children and teachers are trapped! The place is burning out of control, and explosions due to the gas line breaking are still happening. All units respond All units respond! Get there ASAP! Chapter 7 Frank and Julie look at each other in a panic. Julie: Oh My God those poor babies! We have to get to them! Frank reaches up and turns on the sirens. Frank: Oh we will, you can count on that. Frank drives feverishly towards the school with the sirens wailing. When they get there they realize that they are the absolute first on the scene. They jump out and start running towards the building. Frank grabs Julie by the arm. Frank: hold on where do you think you are going? Julie: Frank you can’t save the whole school all by your self, and I’m the only other one here. Besides I am a trained Doctor, those people in there need my help. Now I want to save those people, and we’re wasting time discussing this so lets get moving. Frank starts to protest but figuring there is no point they head off into the blazing school. There is thick smoke, and flames everywhere. Seeing is almost impossible. Frank and Julie crawl on there hands and knees through the smoke. Julie hears a child crying. She follows the sound and finds a little girl trapped under a fallen door. She calls for Frank but there is no answer, she realizes that they have been separated. Julie takes a deep breath and with all of her strength she pull the little girl out from under the door and following the wall is able to find a door. Seeing people gathering out side she places the little girl out side sure one of those people will tend to her, and goes back in for others. She quickly finds an unconscious little boy and a badly hurt teacher she slowly and carefully gets them to the out side of the door. And once more she goes back in. She hears screams and follows them. She comes upon a girl on fire. Julie takes her coat off hurriedly and rolls the girl around on the floor with the coat on her until the fire is out. She then brings that little girl out side. When she goes back in she hears crying. She finds a little boy hiding under a desk. She pulls him towards the door but he is scared and fights her. Ernie: I know you, You killed my aunt Grace. Julie pulls Ernie towards the door. Julie: Well lets make sure you have a longer life then she did and get you out of here. She gets Ernie outside and heads back in. She soon finds a badly hurt little boy. As she takes him quickly to the door, she realizes that it is none other then Dr. Mays Son. She gets him outside, and though tired, and finding it hard to breath she goes back in. She finds a teacher trapped in a blazing room. Unconscious with his leg caught under his desk. Julie fights feverishly to free him, and manages to get him out just as the fire is about to reach him. She pulls him out the door, and goes back in. As she searches she finds it harder and harder to breath, and she passes out. Chapter 8 Frank has been bringing person after person out of the burning school. He has taken in alot of smoke and is not breathing very well, but he doesn’t care all he wants to do is help these people. He has brought out of a dozen people thus far. Other crews are here and have been saving people as well. Frank has just finished bringing out a badly burned man when he looks over and sees Julie being carried out by a fire fighter who found her unconscious inside. Frank runs over to her. Frank: Is she okay?! Fire fighter: She’s not breathing, but still has a faint pulse. Several EMT’s start working on her. EMT: What was she doing in there? Fire fighter: According to witnesses she saved a bunch of lives. She brought out one after another and kept going back in after others. Frank can’t help but smile a little at this information. EMT: Okay she’s breathing again lets get her over to GH ASAP. Frank kisses her forehead and whispers to her. Frank: I love you Julie hang in there okay. Everyone is out of the school so Frank rides with Julie to GH. Upon arrival Karen tends to her. When Frank finishes telling her what happened, Karen smiles with a tear in her eye. Karen: I guess hoping the real Julie would come back wasn’t a false hope at all. Frank: apparently not. Julie opens her eyes, and coughs. Julie: Did everyone get out? Are the children okay? Frank takes her hand and kisses her softly. Frank: Yes my love everyone is out. And it is partly because of you. Julie smiles. Julie: is the baby okay? Karen: The baby is fine. And I’m very sure is quiet proud of to be your baby. Julie smiles. Just then Franks emergency code on his beeper goes off, he has to go. He kisses Julie softly and runs out the door. Frank arrives at the scene of a bad car crash. A car was hit head on by a drunk driver. The impact was so great, that the car spun around and was hit again head on by someone in the cars own lane. The car is now on fire and there is someone inside. As Frank is driving up he realizes it’s Joe’s car! Chapter 9 Frank runs feverishly towards Joe’s burning car. He pull at the door but it is jammed. He can see through the window that Joe is critically injured. Using a crow bar he finally manages to get the door open, but Joe’s legs are Jammed up under the steering wheel, and have started to burn. The fire is about to take over the car. Frank tries desperately to free Joe. He is finally able to pool him free and just as he gets him out of the car, the whole thing goes up in flames. Frank is able to put out the fire on Joe’s legs but they are still badly burned, his whole body looks broken. Frank rushes him to the hospital. On arrival Joe is taken at once into surgery. Frank has Karen and his mom paged. Karen comes to the waiting area first. Karen: Hey Frank what’s up? She stops when she sees the look on his face. Karen: Frank what is wrong? Mary walks up. Mary: Frank is everything alright? Frank: Why don’t we all sit down. Karen and Mary exchange worried looks as they sit. Frank: I just brought in a bad car wreck. A drunk driver hit swerved over into the opposite lane and hit a car head on. The force was so great that it sent the car spinning around and a car that was driving behind the car that was hit wasn’t able to stop in time, and hit him head on again. At this point the car burst into flames. I arrived at this point. I managed to get the driver out but not before his legs were badly burned. He is in very critical condition and is in emergency surgery right now. The man that I’m talking about is Joe. Karen: Oh God No! Not Joe not Joe. Karen dissolves in tears. Frank goes to her and hugs her. Mary: But he is alive right? And everything that can be bone is being done right? Frank hugs his mom. Frank: Yes he is critical but he is alive. And he is in excellent hands. Mary pull out her Rosary and begins to pray. Karen: This can’t be happening, it just can’t be. Frank squeezes Karen’s hand. After what seems like several eternities. Matt comes up to them. Matt: Joe is out of surgery. Mary: give it to me straight how is he? Matt: He lost alot of blood. We removed his spleen, one kidney, part of his liver, and had to perform a full colastimie. He has massive head trauma, and is in a coma, the coma that he is in because of the brain damage may be irreversible. He also has a broken neck. Chapter 10 There is a collective gasp. Mary: Is her paralyzed? Matt: No thanks to Frank he isn’t. But if his head had been moved an inch or so more he would be. Karen: How badly was his brain injured? What are the odds of him waking up, and if he dose will he be Joe? Frank: His legs were badly burned and broken. If he wakes up, and his neck heals will he walk again? Matt: His brain damage was massive. We had to remove a section of the skull itself because of the swelling. I don’t want to take away your hope but I think it is highly unlikely that he will wake up. And if he dose he could very easily be nothing more then that awake. His left leg was burned and broken so badly that we had to amputate it from a little above the knee, and his right leg may still have to be removed. Karen: Oh God No! Karen turns to Frank and he hugs her as she cries. Mary: I have to see him. I want to see him right now! Frank: Matt can we see him? Matt: Not yet he is still in recovery. It will be a couple of hours till he is brought up to ICU. You can see him them. I am so sorry Joe is a good man and a good friend. Matt wheels away. Mary: I’m going to go to the chapel to pray. Mary starts to leave then stops and goes over to Karen. She places a hand on her arm. Mary: Why don’t you come with me. Karen nods Mary gives her a hug. Mary: Frank are you going to come with us? Frank: I might come down in a bit. I’m going to go check on Julie. Mary nods then taking Karen’s hand they walk to the elevator. Frank heads off to Julie’s room in a state of shock. He enters the room quietly and finds her resting. He tip toes over to her and kisses her gently. She opens her eyes and smiles at him. Julie: Hi handsome. Frank tries to smile. Frank: Hi sleeping beauty. Julie can tell something is wrong. Julie: Frank what is wrong? At this Frank starts crying. Chapter 11 Julie holds her arms open wide, as Frank sits down on her bed and lets her hold him. She holds him tightly rubbing his back. Julie: I’m here Frank I’m here. What is it, what is wrong? Frank pulls himself together and tells her of Joe’s accident, and his critical condition. Julie: Oh Frank I’m so sorry. I know you to haven’t been close in quiet some time but he is still your Brother and I know you love him. Frank: It’s weird you know. I haven’t thought much about him lately. On my first day back we past in the ER but didn’t even say two words to each other. And yet I can’t imagine my life with him gone. Because no matter how angry we have been I’ve always known he was around, so I always had hope that things could change but now. Frank shakes his head sadly. Frank: I never realized how petty are differences really are until I saw him trapped in that burning car. The whole way to the hospital I kept thinking don’t you leave me Joe, we have to much unfinished business. Julie: Isn’t there any hope? Frank: According to Matt he will need a miracle. Julie smiles and wipes Franks face with her hand. Julie: Well if It is a miracle he needs then one will just have to be found. And I bet your Mom is putting in an order for one right now. They both laugh a little. Frank: Yeah she is. Her and Karen are in the chapel. I just couldn’t go in there with them. I needed you. Julie smiles and hugs him. Julie: Well I’m write here. Suddenly there is a knock at the door. And Doctor Monica Quartermaine comes in. Monica: Hi all. Julie: Oh hello. I didn’t expect to see you. Frank: Are you looking for me. Is there news on Joe’s condition? Monica: No I’m sorry Frank there’s no change. He’ll be moved down to ICU with in the hour though you can see him then if you like. Frank: Thank you. Monica: Actually I’m here to speak with Julie. Julie: Me? Okay about what, my baby is okay isn’t it? Monica: Oh your baby is fine. The reason I wanted to talk to you, is that the board is impressed with your recent heroics. You have saved several children and teachers and put your own life on the line in the process. And since you have been declared sane and well, and brain washing is not the kind of mental illness that reoccurs, the board would like to hold a hearing to discuss you being reinstated as a doctor here. That is if you’re interested. Frank and Julie look at each other in amazement. Julie is near tears, and shakes her head. Julie: Never never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would ever be able to practice medicine again. Thank you thank you so much I would love the chance. Monica: Now there is no guarantee. I can’t promise you anything. Julie: Oh I understand but to just have the chance thank you thank you. Monica: Fine then. The hearing will be a week from today. Good luck. Julie: Thanks again. Monica leaves. Julie and Frank just look at each other. Julie: Frank this is proof that miracles do happen. Chapter 12 Frank is sitting on the side of Julie's hospital bed. Julie: Can you believe it I might actually get to be a doctor again. Frank: It's hard to believe, but it's great that they are willing to give you a chance. I'm glad some people realize that you really are better, and are a danger to no one. Julie: I can't even begin to tell you what your support has meant to me. I'm so grateful to you and I love you so much. Frank: You have no idea how much good it dose my heart to hear you say that. I love you Julie more then I can express. They kiss. Just then there is a knock at the door and Mary pops her head in. Mary: Frank they've taken Joe to ICU. Karen is in with him now. Frank: How is he doing? Mary: No change. Frank: Well I guess I should go see him. He looks hesitantly at Julie. Julie: Go go I'll be fine. You need to be there. Frank: Thank you. He leans down and kisses her. Then leaves with Mary. In ICU Karen is sitting in a chair next to Joe's bed clutching his hand. He is covered with bandages and machines. Karen: Oh Joe please don't do this please don't leave me. You promised remember you said you'd never leave. We have plans Joe. We have a life to share. I need you Joe. Neil needs you, he has already lost his step father he can't loose you. And your Mom needs you. Please Joe I love you I love you more then I ever new it possible to love. Karen breaks down in tears. Then pulling herself together kisses his hand. She looks up and sees Frank and Mary standing out side. Karen gets up and kisses Joe then goes into the hall. Mary and Karen hug. Mary: Frank do you want to go in with me? Frank: No why don't you go in alone, and then I'll go. Mary: Okay. Mary enters slowly and sits by Joe. As Frank and Karen watch. Karen: This must be very hard for you. Frank: My feelings are so jumbled right now I don't even really know what I feel. All I know is there is way to much unfinished business between us for him to check out. I never wanted this space between us Karen it just happened. I always thought I'd have time to fix it, I never in a million years thought something like this would happen. Has there been any change. Karen shakes her head sadly. Karen: No he is completely non responsive. I just can't believe this Frank I just can't believe this. Karen starts to cry. Frank hugs her tightly. She regains her composure and Frank helps her to a seat. Karen: I'm sorry about loosing it on you like that. Frank takes Karen’s hand. Frank: Karen I wouldn't be clean much less alive if it weren't for you. I owe you my life. So feel free to use me for what ever you need anytime. It is the least I can do. Karen smiles. Karen: Thanks. Frank: Hey would you like some good news. Karen: Oh I'd love some. Frank: Well the hospital board was so impressed with Julie's actions in the fire, that they have decided to hold a hearing a week from today to consider reinstating Julie as a doctor here. Karen: Oh Frank that's wonderful! I'm so happy for her. I'll have to go congratulate her later. I know she doesn’t have it yet but the fact that they're even considering it is a great sign. Frank: It dose give you faith in miracles doesn’t it. Karen: I know, it seems like only yesterday we were talking about the idea of Julie getting better as nothing more then false hope. But now Frank: The sky’s the limit. Mary comes out of the room. Mary: Frank would you like to go in now? Frank: Yeah I need to. Frank gets up and slowly goes in to see his brother. Chapter 13 Frank walked Slowly to Joe’s bedside. He sat down in the chair next to his bed, and looked at Joe’s motionless body under all of those bandages and machines. A lump formed in Franks throat, and he swallowed hard. Frank: Hey Joe it’s me. You know your long lost brother. You know you don’t have to go to such extremes to get my attention. Joe I don’t know what to say here I’m really at a loss. I never wanted us to be so far apart. I wish I could go back in time and make things right. I guess I always thought there would be time to work things out later, I just never thought that I’d run out of time to make things right with you. I just never thought I might not get a chance to make things right. Joe if I had known we were going to run out of time like this, I would have stopped you in the ER yesterday when I saw you, and I’d have told you what was in my heart. I guess that saying is true don’t put off until tomorrow what can be done today because tomorrow may never come. So I guess I’m just going to have to lay it out for you now and pray that you can hear me. Frank picks up Joe’s hand in both of his and squeezes it hard. I love you Joe. I know I have treated you badly lately, but I love you. You are my brother and I just can’t imagine my life with out you in it. From the time mom and dad brought you home from the hospital I have considered you my best friend. I know we’ve had are share of problems but that fact hasn’t changed. I think my problem lately has been that I just couldn’t hide my jealousy anymore. Don’t get me wrong Joe I don’t regret helping you become a doctor, or making sure your life has always been good. It’s just that I would have liked to have been a doctor to and to have had at least one of my own dreams work out. I love the fact that yours have you deserve no less it just would have been nice if I could have had the same good fortune. I know you used to say that you wanted to be just like me. I know there was a time when you idolized me. What you never knew is that I always idolized you and wanted to be like you. The DL-56 just made it impossible for me to hide it any longer. Joe I would give anything to have just one more day with you we could put aside these petty differences and be the friends we once were. Joe I love you and I need you in my life. Please Joe it is time to open your eyes and wake up. Frank suddenly has a sudden memory of something unclear. He can here Joe’s voice shaking begging him to open his eyes, and to laugh. He remembers Joe telling him that he is freaking him out. Frank realizes that this is a memory from right after his fall. Frank squeezes Joe’s hand firmly. Frank: Joe you are scaring me worse then I’ve ever been scared before. I remember you begging me to wake up after the fall. Well now it’s my turn to beg you. Joe it’s time to wake up, please open your eyes. Just then Frank feels Joe’s hand squeeze his. His grip is not as strong as Franks but it is a squeeze no less. Frank looks up at Joe’s face. Joe’s eyes are wide open and there are tears running down his face. Chapter 14 Frank looks at Joe with amazement and pure joy. Frank leaps up in excitement and grabbing a tissue begins drying Joe’s eyes while talking rapidly. Frank: Oh my God your awake! This is a miracle. Joe everything is going to be okay. You’ve been in a nasty car wreck, but your going to heal. You waking up proves it. Don’t worry Joe I’m here and I’ll do what ever it takes to get you well. I love you little brother and I’ve missed you tunes. Joe is now crying harder, and Frank starts to become alarmed. Frank: Joe what is it, what’s wrong? Are you in pain? Should I get a doctor? Everything is going to be okay Joe, everything is going to be okay. The more concerned Frank acts the harder Joe seems to cry. This is alarming to Frank, until it suddenly hits him what is going on. He begins to grin, then gently he takes Joe in his arms as best he can and hugs him. While he whispers softly. Frank: Yeah Joe I’m back I’m back and I’m going to stay. Out in the waiting area Karen and Mary are sitting talking quietly. Karen: He has been a part of my life since I was 8 years old. Even when we were apart, part of him was with me. Mary smiles and nods. Mary: You were never completely out of his mind or heart either. Karen there something I need to say to you. Karen: Okay what. Mary: I’m glad Joe has had you in his life. You make him very happy. I know I’ve been horrible to you, and I am sorry for that. When you have children on day you’ll understand, no mother wants her baby to grow up. But I’m thankful that he has you and if he lives, I will rejoice in the two of you getting married. Karen is fighting back tears. Karen: Mary you have know idea how much it means to me to hear you say that. They hug, Frank comes charging out of Joe’s room. Frank: He’s awake, he’s awake! Karen and Mary both leap up and go running in. Karen grabs Joe’s hand and starts rambling in near tears. Karen: Joe do you know who I’m, do you know who you are, do you know where you are? Joe reaches up weekly and puts his finger to her lips to quiet her. Then he points to himself, pats his chest then points at Karen. Karen starts crying harder. She kisses him lightly. Karen: I love you to Joe I love you to. Chapter 15 It has been a week since Joe’s accident. Frank, Mary and Karen have barely left the hospital. Today is the day of Julie’s hearing to decide weather or not to allow her to come back to the hospital as a doctor. Frank is about to go visit with Joe before the hearing. It has been tough for Joe adjusting to loosing a limb, and dealing with loss of speech do to a stroke caused by the head trauma. But the Doctors are confident he can relearn to speak. Boardman is in the room with Joe. Boardman: According to your charts your healing well. Although your speech hasn’t returned. You know I think you should be realistic with only one leg and no speech I think you should consider another line of work. I mean what kind of doctor can you possibly be. Maybe a job at the recovery room would be more appropriate. Well I have other patients bye. Boardman leaves. Joe shoves his lunch tray on the floor and starts crying, just as Frank walks in. Frank hurries over to him. Frank: Joe what’s wrong?! Frank hands him a piece of paper and a pen, but Joe just throws it on the floor. Frank remembers seeing Boardman coming down the hall and knows how upsetting that man can be. Frank: Joe was Boardman in here? Joe nods. Frank: What did he say to you? Frank hands Joe the paper and pen again. Joe scribbles down what Boardman said. Frank turns red with rage and smoke practically comes out of his ears. Frank takes a deep breath, and takes hold of Joe by the shoulders. Frank: Now you listen to me. That Jerk doesn’t know a thing. Remember he wanted Matt who helped save your life to stay out of the OR. That fool doesn’t know what anyone can or can’t do. Now you are going to get better, and go back to being a doctor. That’s not a hope or a wish, that’s a fact. All you have to do is put all that anger and frustration into your therapy and you’ll be back on duty in no time. Frank takes a tissue and dries Joe’s eyes. Frank: Joe I have to go up to Julie’s hearing but I promise I’ll come back just as soon as I can okay. Joe nods. Frank hugs his brother, and leaves. Frank gets to the board room just as the hearing is about to start. Julie and Karen are sitting in the hall. Frank: Hey ladies, sorry I’m late Joe needed me. He hugs Julie. Karen: Is everything alright? Frank: Well if Boardman would stay away it would be. Frank fills them in on what happened. Karen: THAT MONSTER!! Just then Dr. Quartermaine sticks her head out. Monica: Julie we’re ready to start. Julie: Wish me luck guys. Karen: I know your going to get your job back Julie. Frank: Everything will work out. Julie goes into the boardroom. Chapter 16 Julie is sitting at the end of a long table in the board room, anxiously looking around. She is trying to smile as Karen suggested. Dr. Quartermaine: Ms. Devlin we have heard from several of your Doctors, as well as colleagues of ours and friends of yours. Now we’d like to hear from you. Julie: There is nothing I can say or do that will bring back the lives I took. I can’t undo the damage I’ve done. If I could I would but I can’t. I am profoundly sorry, and remorseful for all that I’ve done. I will carry this guilt and shame to my grave. I know this doesn’t change anything but it is the truth. Ever since I was a little girl all I’ve wanted to be was a Doctor. Helping people was what I always wanted to do with my life. When I first came to Port Charles I set out to do just that. All I wanted to do was heal people. Then when I was kidnapped I became someone else. I became someone I didn’t know or like, but for a long time I was that person. That person had no regard for human life, and I shudder everytime I look in the mirror to know that person existed inside of me. The things I did were beyond atroshes, I’m not sure there are even words in the human language that would adequately describe the horridness of my actions. But I assure you that I have worked very hard to rid myself of that demon side of me, and I along with my doctors are confident that that part of me will never reemerge. The part that has resurfaced is the part that loves, cares about, and wants to help her fellow man in everyway. Until last week I didn’t even dare dream of the idea of getting to be a doctor again. It was just to much to hope for. But now it’s all I can dream about. Please give me a chance, and I promise you won’t regret it. I would love to come back, I know that trusting me is going to be hard, and I am going to have to reprove myself to alot of people, I know I may not deserve the chance, but if you give me the chance I will do my best to show you that you were right to have faith in me. The board members look at one another. Dr. Quartermaine: Thank you Ms. Devlin for speaking so candidly. The board will now discuss the issue and let you know. Julie: Thank you very much for listening. Julie gets up and goes. Frank hugs her when she comes out of the room. Frank: Well how did it go? Julie: I’m not sure, I talked and they listened. Frank: I’m sure they will reinstate you. Julie smiles. Julie: I wish I had your confidence. Where is Karen? Frank: She went to check on Joe. Karen is sitting with Joe as he sleeps. Ellen enters. Ellen: Hi how is he? Karen: Sleeping he’s had a rough day. Ellen sees Karen’s upset look. Ellen: Karen what is it? Karen: I don’t see how he is supposed to get better with Doctors like Boardman around. Ellen puts an arm around Karen. Ellen; What did Boardman do now? Karen: Oh he just told Joe that since he can’t speak, and is missing a leg that is medical career is over, and the best place he can expect to get work is the recovery room. Ellen’s face hardens with rage. Ellen: Karen that is the most preposterous thing I have ever heard. Boardman should not be allowed to work with people it that’s his attitude. I don’t think that man even has a heart. I remember when he tried to block Matt from the OR, though I didn’t let on I wanted to rip his head off. Karen: Well after this you may have to get in line. The thing is that Joe is very vulnerable right now, as well as insecure. So while what Boardman used to say wouldn’t have bothered him this really did. He has fears that what Boardman said is true and those fears were there before Boardman ever said a thing. Ellen nods. Ellen: Then there is only one thing to do. Since he is so open to suggestion right now lets get the right doctor in here. I’m going to go find Matt. Ellen hugs Karen and leaves. Back up in the hall outside the boardroom Frank and Julie are still waiting. Finally the door opens. Dr. Quartermaine: Ms. Devlin could you please come back in the board has reached a decision. Julie turns to Frank. Julie: Wish me luck. Frank: Good luck. They hug, and Julie goes into the boardroom. Chapter 17 Julie sits nervously at the table as she waits for their decision. Dr. Quartermaine: Ms. Devlin this has been a most difficult dilemma for us. You are guilty of killing 5 people, and trying to kill several others. That is a fact that can't be ignored, however you have shown great remorse and it can't be denied that you were ill. Your doctors have assured us of your recovery, as have you. And your actions during the fire at PC Elementary speak to your genuine goodness. After much debate we have decided that you may come back. However how ever you will be closely supervised for an undetermined amount of time, and will be expected to continue therapy. We expect you to not make us regret this decision. If you give us the slightest reason to we will fire you. Is that understood. Julie: Yes I understand perfectly. Thank you so much I promise you won't regret it. Thank you for this chance. Dr. Quartermaine: We expect to see you at 9am sharp tomorrow morning. You may leave now. Julie gets up and practically floats out of the room. Frank jumps up when she comes out of the room. Frank: Well what happened? Julie jumps into Franks arms and hugs him tightly. Julie: Oh Frank I'm a doctor again. I start back first thing tomorrow morning. Frank: Julie that is fantastic! Frank twirls her around. Frank: Lets go tell Joe and Karen. They head of to Joe's room. Ellen is still looking for Matt she finally finds him in the oncall room fast asleep. Ellen smiles looking at this man she loves so. She goes and sits down next to him, and strokes his face. Matt opens one eye and seeing Ellen smiles. He reaches up and pulls her into an embrace. Then he kisses her lips softly. Matt: What a great way to wake up. Ellen: Well I don't mind the benefits myself. She strokes Matt's firm chest as he holds her. She could stay here forever. But then she remembers why she was looking for him. She pulls away. Matt: Ellen what's wrong? Ellen: It's Joe there is a problem and I can't think of enyone else better to handle it then you. Matt sits up on the alert. Matt: What is wrong? Ellen: Boardman told Joe that in his condition there is no way he can ever be a doctor and the best he can hope for is serving up food at the recovery room. Now normally Joe would just shrug it off. But what Boardman said reinforced Joe's fears. He is in a very vulnerable state right now and very open to suggestion. He is really in a bad way Matt. And I thought you could help. Matt: Damn that Boardman! People like him shouldn't be allowed to be Doctors. Joe has always been a good friend to me, I will do what ever I can for him. Matt gets into his chair and heads off to Joe's room. Chapter 18 Karen is sitting at Joe's bed side stroking his hand. Joe is staring
at the ceiling. He has not touched his lunch though it's his Mothers chicken
soup.
Chapter 19 Frank, Julie, and Karen are in the cafeteria staring aimlessly at there
coffee cups. Karen is trying unsuccessfully not to cry, as tears stream
down her face.
Karen: What we need is to somehow get Joe to just say one word. That
will give him the confidence he needs to get well.
Chapter 20 Joe: w ww wa wa watt t er water! The room erupts in excitement. Karen: Joe your talking your talking! Frank excitedly hands Joe a glass of water. Frank: You want water Joe here you go if you can ask for it you can have it. He then hugs Joe as Joe is drinking the water quickly. Karen: Joe you spoke you really spoke. I've never been so happy to hear the word water before. They laugh. Julie: Frank you are a bona-fide genius. Frank smiles. Frank: What can I say it pays to go to the movies. Matt: Oh the eggs of course Regarding Henry. I loved that movie. Karen: I'm going to have to rent it now. Joe after catching his breath finally speaks. Joe: Oh so I should've said crackers. They all burst out laughing. Joe: Thank you. Frank: Joe we didn't do anything except give you a reason to speak. Matt: You know that trick should be in a medical journal. Well I better go call the therapy department and arrange your session for today. Joe: Can't wait. Frank: Not that I'm complaining but what happened here? Your mood is so different. Joe looks at Matt. Joe: I got a second opinion. Matt smiles. Karen hugs Matt. Karen: Thank you so much. Frank shakes Matt's hand Frank: You’re a true friend. Julie smiles. Julie: Matt your one in a million. Joe: So can I get something to eat besides this. Frank grabs his chest, and pretends he's hurt. Frank: What you don't like my eggs? Joe: Uh know. They all laugh. Franks beeper goes off. Frank: Well I'd love to stay and chat but someone's in trouble. Julie: My hero. Well I have an appointment with my Kevin. They hug Joe and Karen and leave. Karen: I'll go to the recovery room and get you some real food. What would you like? Joe: A cheese burger, fries, a soda, and a piece of chocolate cake. Karen smiles. Karen: Well you've certainly gotten your appetite back. They hug. and She leaves. Matt: Well I'll be back in a bit, I have to set up you session and check on some other patients. Matt leaves. Finally alone Joe lets loose. Joe: I CAN TALK, YES!!! Chapter 21 It is early the next morning Frank and Julie are getting ready for work.
Chapter 22 Karen sits on Joe's bed in amazement. Joe is smiling away about his
plan to send Frank to med. school.
Chapter 23 Julie has Just entered the ER. Frank has just brought in a massive heart
attack victim. Julie goes over to the gurney to begin treating the patient.
She is a little taken back to see the face of Grace's father staring back
at her. As she starts to treat him he grabs her arm and shoves her.
Chapter 24 Joe and Matt stare at Boardman waiting to hear what he has to say. Boardman
is leaning up against the wall his arms folded across his chest.
Chapter 25 It has been a week since Joe came home from the hospital. He has been working very hard and is getting better everyday. Joe and Karen have also been working on getting Frank excepted to med. school which no one else knows about. Karen is out running errands, Joe is sitting on the couch reading when the phone rings. Joe: Hello. Mr. Chance: Mr. Scanlon? Joe: Yes this is Mr. Scanlon. May I help you? Mr. Chance: This is Mr. Chance from PC Med. school. Joe sits straight up his heart pounding with excitement. Joe: Oh yes of course, I spoke to you the other day concerning my brother Frank. Have you reached a decision? Mr. Chance: After careful review and consideration we have decided that your brother deserves a chance. He didn't cause his problems someone else did, and everything we've read indicates he would make a fine Doctor. So we have decided to except your brother as a full time med. student come this fall. Joe can barely contain himself. He is about to burst. Joe: Thank you Mr. Chance thank you so very much. I know my brother will be an excellent student and will become a great Doctor. Would you mind If I came over and got the acceptance letter I'd like to give it to him myself. Mr. Chance: That would be fine. Have a good day. Joe: You to Mr. Chance thank you again thank you so much. Joe hangs up, just as Karen walks in. Joe grabs her and twirls her around happily. Karen: Well somebody is having a good day. Joe: Mr. Chance from PC med. school just called they've excepted Frank. He'll be starting classes this fall. I'm going to go pick up the acceptance letter so I can give it to him tonight. Karen: Joe this is wonderful! Frank made your dreams come true and now your going to make his come true. Joe: We really have come full circle. Karen: So how and when are you going to tell him? Joe: Well I was thinking we could have Frank, Julie and Mom over for dinner tonight and I'll tell him then. Karen: That sounds perfect. How about if I call and invite them while you go pick up the acceptance letter. And maybe you could stop at the store and get something special for me to make for tonight. Joe: Sounds like a plan. They kiss and Joe heads off. Karen goes to the phone. She soon has arranged for them all to be there around 6pm. Joe returns soon with the letter. He has bought all kinds of gourmet things. Karen gets to work on dinner. At 6pm on the dot Frank and Julie arrive. Mary comes just a few minutes later. Soon they are all seated at the table. Joe: If I could have everyone's attention please I have some big news. Everyone looks at Joe. Joe: As you know I wouldn't be a Doctor if it wasn't for Frank. He encouraged me, pushed me, and paid my way through med. school and for all of those things I'm forever grateful. I have often wondered how I could ever pay him back for all he has done for me. And just recently it came to me exactly what I could do. You see while me becoming a Doctor was a great thing a very sad thing happened because of it. For as long as I can remember Frank has wanted to be a Doctor but after Dad died since I wanted to be a Doctor to Frank gave up his dream so he could help me get mine. Well I'm of the belief that it is never to late to start following your dreams. A perfect example of this is the movie Patch Adams which is based on a true story. Patch didn't start med. school until he was 35 that's 4 years older then Frank is. What all this is leading to is that I want Franks dreams to come true, and because I'm a Doctor now I'm earning the kind of money that can help accomplish that goal. About a week ago I sent all of Franks records, some letters of recommendation, reports of his work as an EMT, and some explanations about the past year to PC Med. school. And earlier today I got a call from the school, as of this coming September Frank will be a full time med. student. Joe pulls the letter out of his pocket, and hands it to Frank. Joe: And just so there is no confusion or misunderstandings about this, I'm paying for this in full. Chapter 26 The room is silent as Joe hands Frank the acceptance letter. Frank is staring at Joe in disbelief as he takes the letter. Julie is staring at Frank, and Karen is staring lovingly at Joe with tears in her eyes. Frank tears open the letter and reads it in disbelief. Then he looks up at Joe there are tears running down his cheeks. He swallows hard and shakes his head. Frank: Joe I I don't know what to say, I can't believe this, I just me a Doctor. I Oh my God I'm going to be a Doctor. Frank swallows the mounting lump in is throat, and wipes his face. Julie takes his hand. Frank: For as long as I can remember all I wanted to be was a doctor. Every toy I ever got I would pretend was a patient. If I saw someone hurt I'd try to help even if I didn't know what to do. I wanted it so bad I could taste it. I used to dream about it at night. I'd watch every doctor show I could and memorize any definition that was given. But then Dad died and Joe wanted to become a doctor so I buried my dream. I gave it up and I did all I could to forget about it even though deep down it was killing me. And now this same dream that I used to eat sleep and breath. The one that died so long ago is being given back to me. I can't even explain to you how I'm feeling right now. Joe Thank you I can never repay you for this, I just don't know what to say. I just I can't believe this. Thank you, thank you. Frank can't hold it in anymore he just starts crying. Joe goes over and hugs him. Joe: The pleasure is all mine. Come on now don't cry, and you don't need to thank me. For this is simply a long over due thank you. But if you really want to thank me simply be the best Doctor you can be. The brothers hug, Joe goes back to his seat and sits down. Frank wipes his face. Julie: Oh Frank this is great see I told you anything is possible. (She hugs Frank tightly) Joe you are incredible and on behalf of Frank and my unborn child as well as from me thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Mary: My two perfect sons. I don't see how a mother could be any prouder. I'm so thankful that the two of you are close again, and taking such good care of each other. Karen: Well I'm just thankful that the nightmare that has been our lives since April of 98 is over, and that we are all as good as we were and maybe a little better. Joe: I'll drink to that. They all click glasses. Frank: I'd like to propose a toast. To my brother who I dearly love. I'm grateful beyond words to have you in my life and I swear that I will never let anything come between us again. They all clink glasses again. Joe grins broadly. Joe: I have another little surprise. Karen: You do? Frank: Another one?! Joe: Well it's not so much a surprise as an overdue duty. A couple of days ago I hired a PI to investigate Chris. That fool sure didn't cover his tracks well, the PI got concrete evidence that Chris did indeed set Frank up all the way. So I alerted the hospital board, the press, and the cops. Tomorrow all of the papers and news stations will be setting the record straight and by doing so once and for all clearing Franks name. Also the board is so lived that there is a very strong likelihood that Chris will loose his med. license for good. Of course since the DA's office is considering pressing charges I think that will be the least of his worries. Frank from the bottom of my heart I'm sorry I will never doubt you again. Julie: Way to go Joe! Karen: Joe this is incredible. Mary: You see good always prevails. Frank is just beaming. Frank: Thank you Joe, apology accepted and unnecessary. Karen laughs and shakes her head. Karen: Oh now it's unnecessary. They all laugh. Frank: Well now I have an announcement. Or rather a question. ( He turns to Julie) Julie I love you more then words or actions could ever say or show. You are my heaven my earth and everything in between will you marry me. Julie starts to cry. Julie: Oh Frank of course I'll marry you. They hug and congratulations are given. Karen: Hey guys how about a double Scanlon wedding. Julie: I love it that's a great Idea! Joe: It sounds good to me, Frank what do you think? Frank: Well a wedding is a family affair so sure it sounds good to me. The celebration dinner continues well into the night. Back at home, Julie finds Frank in front of the mirror wearing her stethoscope. Julie come up behind him. Julie: Dr. Scanlon paging Dr. Frank Scanlon. Frank turns around and pulls her into his arms. Frank: Hi there gorgeous. Julie: Tonight was pretty amazing wasn't it. Frank: Julie I just can't believe it I just can't believe it me a Doctor. It's what I've always wanted. Julie: you deserve it. Frank swoops her up in his arms and carries her to the bed. He lays her across it, and begins kissing her with long hot kisses. She pulls him close to her and holds him tight as passion burns out of control and they fall together as one. Chapter 27
Joe: I can't believe this day is actually here I've been dreaming of it since I was 10. ( Switch over to Karen and Julie) Karen: I feel like I've been waiting for this day forever and now it's finally here. ( Switch to Frank and Joe ) Frank: I just can't believe Julie and I have made it to today. It seems like only yesterday we were saying good bye for what we thought would be forever, and now we're about to commit our lives to one another and we're having a baby. It just all seems to good to be true but it is true. I'm about to marry the women of my dreams. ( Switch to Karen and Julie.) Julie: This all seems to good to be true. I have to keep reminding myself that it is true that I'm about to marry the man of my dreams and in a few weeks have his child. When not so long ago we were as far apart as two people could be. ( Switch to Frank and Joe) Joe: We've all been through a real struggle to get here, but now we are here and I think we are in store for some real happiness. ( Switch to Karen and Julie) Karen: We've been through alot there's no doubt about that but you know I we're all really getting back on track and I really believe things are going to be good for all of us. Karen peeks out at the wedding guests. Karen: Oh great little miss Courtney is here. I know she has to be after all Neil is the ring bearer, but still she just gets my blood pumping. Karen gets a devilish look on her face and looks at Julie. Karen: Hey Julie are you up to tormenting her a little at the reception? Julie makes her face expressionless. Julie: I will do my best master. They both start laughing. Julie: Oh we are terrible we shouldn't be joking about that stuff. Karen: Julie sometimes the best way to put something bad in the past is to laugh at it. Besides their have been times in past months where I've wished that she was in the book. Julie: Okay Karen but no more of those jokes today deal. Karen: deal. The wedding begins. The men are standing in the gazebo as the women approach. Both couples have written there own vows. Joe: Karen as a child you were my very best friend, as a teen you were my dream and fantasy, and now as an adult you are my true love and soul mate. When I look at you I see all my dreams realized all my goals achieved. Today I believe I'm the luckiest man alive for I'm not only marrying my true love and soul mate but my very best friend and my absolute fantasy come true. I vow to you today Karen to be here for you as your friend and lover for as long as the good Lord allows. With this ring thee I wed. Karen has tears running down her cheeks. Karen: Joe when I look at you I see all I could ever want or need. I see the friend who has stood bye and helped me through bad times, and laughed with me through good times. I see the man I love and the future we'll have. You are the definition of a friend and a lover. And I'm honored to have the privilege of going through the ride of life at your side. I swear to you today Joe I will do my best to give you the love, friendship and loyalty you so deserve and have given to me so willingly all the days of my life. With this ring thee I wed. Joe is now crying. They kiss tenderly. Frank: They say for everyone there is one perfect match that will fit just right and that if these two can find each other then their love will last forever. Julie from the first moment we met I felt that we were meant to be one. You are everything I have ever hoped to find. Julie you are a dream come true for me and I vow to you here today to love, honor, and treasure you with all that I'm, all that I have, and all that I will ever be. Because for me that one perfect match is you. With this ring thee I wed. Julie is crying. Julie: Frank I struggled with what to say here today. Mostly because I'm not altogether sure how to put into words what I feel. You see my love for you is so strong and real that any phrase, statement, or verse I say would be an understatement. But here is what I've come up with. In the rainstorms of my life you've been the rain bow. In the darkest moments you've been a flashlight. In the scariest of times you've been a hand to hold. When I was cold you wormed me, when I was alone you came to me. You have stood bye me when I wouldn't even stand bye me. You have spoken for me when I couldn't, and you have believed in me when I couldn't. You are my true friend, companion, and love. You are a prayer that was answered, and dream that has come true, and a fantasy come alive. I love you beyond words, beyond actions, beyond everything. Here today a vow to spend my life at your side giving you all the love I have to give, and doing my best to be for and to you what you've been for and to me. With this ring thee I wed. They kiss tenderly. Chapter 28 It has been several weeks since the wedding. Joe and Karen decided to
move back in to the Scanlon house so that the two of them, Frank, Julie,
Lark, and the new baby can all be one big happy family. Frank, and Joe
are out side playing basket ball, Lark is volunteering at the hospital
and Karen is making lunch. Julie is laying down upstairs with a head ache.
Julie comes into the kitchen holding her stomach.
Chapter 29 Frank, Karen, Joe, and Mary are waiting nervously for word on Julie
and the baby. Frank is pacing back and forth ringing his hands.
Chapter 30 Frank is lying on the bed with his arms around Julie, and Emma as Julie
cradles the little girl in her arms. There is a knock at the door and Karen
pops her head in.
Chapter 31 It has been 8 months since Emma's birth. Frank is finishing up his first year of med. school with a perfect 4.0, and is one of the most popular students there. He is also moonlighting as an EMT to help out with bills. Julie's career is thriving. After Emma's birth Mary decided to retire and take up being a nanny for her granddaughter, and is planing on watching Joe and Karen's baby to when it is born. It is a cold and nasty evening in early April a freak blizzard has paralyzed most of Port Charles. Julie, Joe, Frank are all at work. Mary has gone home. And Karen is home alone with Emma, and Neil who is waiting to be picked up by Courtney after spending the weekend with his Dad. Neil is watching TV while Karen puts Emma to bed. When suddenly all of the lights go out. She goes down stairs to check on Neil. Karen: Neil? Neil: Why did the lights go out? Karen: The storm must have knocked out some power lines. Neil: This is so cool! Karen laughs. Karen: Come on lets go find a flash light and some candles. They quickly find the candles and flashlight. After lighting the candles they go into the living room. Suddenly Karen feels a sharp pain in her stomach and liquid runs down her leg. Karen grabs her stomach. Karen: OH OW! Neil: Karen are you okay? Why is there water running down your leg? Karen eases herself onto the couch Neil it's okay just bring me the phone. Neil hands Karen the phone, but it's dead. Karen: Oh no the storm most of knocked down the phone lines to. Suddenly Karen has another pain this one is stronger and harder. Karen: Ooooh! Karen bites her lip and a tear runs down her cheek. Neil: Karen what's wrong? Karen: Neil do you remember your Daddy and I telling you how your going to have a little brother or sister real soon? Neil nods his head. Karen: Well the baby wants to come now. And because of the storm it may have to be born right here. Neil: No way! This is so cool Karen smiles. Karen: Well I'm glad you think so because it looks like your going to have to help me. OOH OOH this baby wants born. Karen rubs her stomach as the contraction subsides. Neil: What do you need me to do? Karen: Go bring me my medical bag, and the stop watch on your Dads dresser. Karen grabs her stomach again. Karen: OOOH HURRY! Neil races upstairs. He quickly returns with both. Karen: Thank you now go get some towels. Neil runs upstairs, as Karen has another contraction. After it subsides Karen tries to examine her self. But the contractions are coming to close and she can't because of the pain. She starts to cry. Neil takes her hand and squeezes it. Neil: Don't cry Karen it will be okay. Just then the door bell rings . . . Chapter 32
Karen Moans in agony as Neil heads to the door to see who is there. Karen: Neil Stop! Make sure you know who it is before you open the door. OWE OWE OOOOOH. Neil looks out the window. Neil: Oh it's okay it's my mom. Karen: Oh great, OH OH OH OOOOOOOH. Neil flings the door open. Courtney comes in and gives Neil a hug. Neil: Mom Karen is having the baby now. Courtney quickly gets Karen's legs propped up, and sees that the head is coming out. Courtney: Okay Karen this kid is coming out you need to push now! Karen pushes hard. And then falls back on the couch. Karen: I can't I can't do this. Courtney: Karen yes you can listen to me yes you can. Now push! Karen pushes and suddenly there is a small little cry. Courtney cuts the cord and starts cleaning the baby up. Neil: Whoa this is so awesome. Karen: What is it? Courtney smiles up at Karen and hands her the baby wrapped in a towel. Courtney: It's a girl. Karen wraps her arms around the tiny bundle and starts to cry happily. The baby is still crying. Neil walks over to her, and offers the baby his finger. She takes it and holds it tightly. Neil: Don't cry baby it's okay. I'm your big brother and I'm always going to be here for you. Just then Joe comes in. Neil: Dad the baby is here! Joe runs over to Karen. Karen: Hi there Dad meet your little girl. Joe falls to his knees. Joe: A girl Oh she is every bit as beautiful as her mother. Karen I'm so sorry I wasn't here for you. Karen: It's alright we're together now and that's all that matters. The phone lines are down because of the storm. So I couldn't call for help, I don't know what I would have done if Neil and Courtney hadn't been here. They really helped. Joe looks at Courtney with surprise. Courtney: Yes Joe I helped. Joe: Thank you. Well we better get you both to the hospital. Just then the lights come on and the phone rings. They all laugh. Chapter 33 It is the morning after the storm. The whole Scanlon clan is gathered at the hospital. Joe is in Karen's room watching her feed they're daughter. Joe is staring at them in amazement. Karen smiles up at him Karen: What are you thinking about? Joe: I'm thinking that I'm the most profoundly fortunate man on the face of the earth. Joe moves over and puts his arms around Karen and the baby. Joe: I have the carrier I've always wanted. I have my brother back. I'm married to the women of my dreams. And now I'm the father of the most perfect little girl this world has ever seen. He kisses Karen then the baby. Karen: So what are we going to call this perfect little girl? Joe: Well I'm not really sure of a first name but, for a middle name how about Beth. That is my mothers middle name. Karen: Beth I like that, and I'm sure your mother will to. Joe: Well since I picked her middle name you pick her first name. Karen leans her head back and thinks. Karen: When I was a little girl there was this one doll I had that I loved more then anything. I took her everywhere with me. Her name was Claire. Joe: Claire Beth Scanlon. I love it! That's her name. Karen and Joe kiss in agreement. Claire then lets out a cute little burp and they both laugh. There is a knock at the door. Julie pokes her head in. Julie: Up for some visitors? Karen: Sure come on in. With that Julie, Emma, Frank, Mary, and Neil come in. Neil sits on the bed. Neil: Can I hold her? Karen: Sure. She puts him in his arms and Claire coos. Joe: She sure looks comfortable in your arms there buddy. Neil: Well of course she dose I'm her big brother. Frank and Joe exchange a little knowing smile. Mary: She is beautiful. So dose my little grandbaby have a name? Joe and Karen look at each other. Joe picks Claire up in his arms. Joe: Everyone I'd like for you to meet Claire Beth Scanlon. Julie: Oh that's so pretty. Frank: It suites her. Mary: Beth wait a minute that's my middle name. Karen: Joe and I wanted her to have your middle name. Joe: If you approve. Mary: Well of course I approve. They all smile. Frank: Congratulations I know there is know better feeling in the world then becoming a parent. Frank gazes at Emma resting in Julie's arms. Julie: So should we let the cousins meet. Julie carries Emma over to Claire. Julie: Emma sweetie meet your little cousin Claire. Claire starts to fuss, Emma reaches out her little fist and grabs onto Claire's fist Claire looks at Emma. Emma smiles then Claire smiles. Everyone has tears in there eyes. Joe: The tradition continues. Chapter 34 It has been two years and one month since Claire's birth. Both Emma and Claire have new little brothers. Frankie the third, and little Joe. Frank is about to graduate med. school. He is graduating with honors and he has gone through all of med. school with a perfect 4.0. It is now graduation day. Frank is tying is tie for the umpteenth time, when Joe comes in. Frank: This tie is driving me crazy! Joe laughs. Joe: Here let me help you. Joe re ties Franks tie. Frank: I can't believe this is really happening. Joe: Well believe it. Come next month you get to be a lowly intern. Frank: That is if I get an internship. I haven't heard from any hospitals yet. Joe: Frank your graduating with a perfect 4.0, and with honors not to mention glowing recommendations. Of course your going to get an internship. Frank smiles. Frank: I can't believe we're both going to be doctors. Joe: It's the way it should be. They hug. Julie comes running in. Julie: Frank! There is a letter from the GH board here for you. Frank turns pale. Frank: What if it's a rejection? Joe: Frank don't think like that! Julie: Frank think positive we've made it this far haven't we. She shoves the envelope at Frank. Frank opens it reads for a few seconds and then yells in excitement. Frank: YES!!! I got it I got it I really got it I'm going to be an intern at GH. Frank picks up Julie and twirls her around. Mary and Karen come in. Karen: Hey what's all the excitement about? Mary: The kids are ready we really should leave we don't want to be late. What's going on? Frank: You are looking at the newest intern at GH! Frank holds up the letter triumphantly. Karen: Oh Frank that's great congratulations! Mary: That's my boy. Everyone hugs. Emma and Claire walk in holding hands as usual. Emma; When are we going to Daddy's guarden nation? Everyone laughs. Frank picks up his little girl. Frank: It's a graduation little princess and we're going right now. Joe picks up Claire, Karen and Julie go get the boys and they leave. At the Graduation they pass out the diplomas and now it's time for the valedictorian to speak. Frank steps up to the podium. Frank: You would think a man in is thirties who has wanted to be a doctor since he was in diapers wouldn't have a problem with this speech. But everytime I've tried to write it I've gotten all choked up. And maybe that's partly because for so long this dream of mine was buried. But now thanks to the love and support of my wonderful family here I am. So maybe the best thing to do is say thank you and give a word or two of advice. To my mother who never lost faith in me even when I lost it in myself. To my wife who stood bye me and taught me how to fly again after my darkest days. She'll say I taught her but I know it's only together that we were able to fly once more. To my sister in law. For helping me and showing me the way back from hell. You gave me my life back I will never forget that. To my kids for bringing me the joy and laughter that keeps me young, and especially to my brother who supported me both financially and emotionally to get me here today. Joe I know I wouldn't be up here if it wasn't for you I love you Joe. (Joe, Karen, Julie, and Mary are all crying) Now for the advice. Never forget that a good doctor always puts the patient and their patients families ahead of everything else in there career. Ahead of money, ahead of advancement, ahead of the hospital. And never ever forget while you may save lives you are not God. Thank you. Everyone applauds. Later that night after the celebration is over they return home. There is another letter for Frank. It's an invitation. It reads Dr. Frank Scanlon you are cordially invited to a cocktail and dinner party being thrown in honor of the new interns. Bye Mr. and Mrs. Quartermaine, on the 7th floor of General Hospital on June 1. Frank reads it to himself. He gets a funny feeling but shakes it off. He shoves the invite into his calendar book so he won't forget and reprimands himself for being so paranoid. Chapter 35 It has been a few weeks since Frank's graduation. Tomorrow is the day his internship starts. And tonight is the party on the 7 floor of the hospital to welcome the interns. Frank is upstairs getting ready. Julie comes in looking worried. Julie: Frank I know this is going to sound paranoid but don't you think you should at least call the Quartermaines and make sure there really is a party? Frank smiles and takes Julie lovingly into his arms. Frank: Julie it is not uncommon for hospitals, much less the Quartermaines to through parties. I don't want to call and make myself look like a paranoid fool. I've got enough obstacles in front of me like my age, and my past I don't need to add paranoia to the list. Julie laughs. Julie: Your right, I guess I'm just nervous. I don't want a repeat of that party. It was the beginning of some pretty dark times. Frank holds Julie in his arms and kisses her. Frank: It was also the beginning of some pretty nice stuff to. Julie kisses him, and runs her fingers down his back. Frank plants fiery kisses all along her neck. Julie: I can't argue with that. He pulls back. Frank: Oh I wish I could just hold you forever but I have to get going I don't want to be late. Julie groans. Julie: I know. Downstairs Joe and Karen are sitting at the kitchen table. Mary and Victor have taken the kids to dinner and a movie and Julie Joe have to work Karen will have the place to herself Joe: I wish I didn't have to work tonight then I could spend the whole night with you. He rubs her face with his hand. Karen holds his hand against her face. Karen: Oh that sounds heavenly. But you need to go. They kiss. Frank and Julie come down. Joe: Well if it isn't the new intern Doctor Frank Scanlon. Frank: Come tomorrow my dream will really come true. Thanks to little brother over here. Joe looks at Franks clothes. Joe: You know Frank in the last few months the hospital has imposed a dress code you have to wear a tie. Frank: WHAT! That's ridicules! I'm not wearing a tie! Joe: Fine be a rebel but it is a rule. Frank: It has nothing to do with medicine. Joe cracks up. Joe: I said I'd get you. Frank laughs, and throws a towel at Joe. Frank: You little weasel. Well I better go. Frank kisses Julie and leaves. Julie: Bye Frank Joe: Have fun Karen: See you later Julie: I better go to. Joe: Yeah it's getting late. Joe, and Julie leave for work. At the hospital Frank runs into his fellow interns all waiting for what turns out to be a broken elevator. Again Frank's suspicions start to rise but he quickly knocks them down. The group consisting of 4 other men and 4 women decide to take the stairs. When they get there they find an empty room filled with construction equipment. And a little table with some drinks, and a sign welcoming them. Franks heart starts to pound and he turns to leave just as a man jump up from behind a counter with a machine gun. Chapter 36 Everyone starts to scream and run. But there is no where to go the doors are all locked. The man sprays bullets everywhere. Man: None of you are going anywhere! The shaken but unharmed interns all huddle together. Frank, and the other male interns Josh, Gil, Tom, and Ed. Stand in front of the women to block them from the bullets. Frank: Take it easy. Now what do you want. Man: SHUT UP YOU!! Your the last person I'm going to listen to. Gil: What do you want? Man: You want to know what I want?! you want to know what I want?! Heather: Well you obviously want something. Man: Your dam right I want something. I want revenge! The man rips off his sky mask and starts firing wildly again. When the bullets stop Ed is down. Everyone rushes to help Ed. But Frank though he is helping can't take his eyes off the man. For it is none other then CHRIS RAMSEY! Ed has a bullet through his shoulder, and is bleeding badly Gracie puts pressure on it. Frank goes over to Chris. Frank: Chris, I can't believe your doing this. Chris: Well believe it Frankenstein. Chris points the gun at Frank. Frank backs away. Val: You know him? Frank: Yeah we used to be partners of sorts. Chris: Till you and your dam brother destroyed my life! Josh: How is taking all of us hostage going to help your life? Chris: Don't ask me stupid question's! Chris starts firing again. This time Gil, and Tom are hit. Tom is killed and Gil is critically wounded. Gracie: Now look at what you've done! What good dose killing one and wounding to others do. Your life is a bigger mess now then ever. Val: Gracie leave him alone you'll just make him shoot again. Chris: Well thank you Val it's nice to see some people understand me. Angie: Can we at least know what happened that was so terrible, that it would make you want to kill all of us. Leia: I think you owe us that much. Frank: He doesn’t want to kill you he wants me. Chris let these people go, let them get Gil and Ed the help they need. Chris: Oh how noble coming form a jerk like you. Val: Chris I don't know much about you but I can bet at one time you cared about people. So I'm going to appeal to that side of you. There is a dead man over there and another who needs surgery. What ever your gripe with Frank is It doesn’t have to be resolved with violence towards others. I don't know what happened to you but I'm sure it was bad. Bad stuff happens every where. Leia: Chris killing us won't give you your life back. But letting us go might give you back some dignity. Gracie: Please just let us all go. Angie: At least let us get Gil some help. Heather: If your a big man I'm sure you will let us go. Josh: Just don't shoot anymore okay when you do that your only hurting yourself in the long run. Frank: Chris lets talk this out. Chris starts crying and drops the gun. Heather grabs it. Just then the cops who were called when the first shots were fired come rushing in. Gil and Ed are taken to the ER, and OR. And Chris is taken into custody. Everyone else heads home. Julie, Joe, and Karen are waiting out side for Frank. Frank and Julie rush into each others arms. Julie: Oh Frank I was so scared I thought I'd never see you again. Joe: It's good to see you in one piece. Karen: Are you sure your alright. Frank: Yeah just tired. Julie: I can't believe Chris did this Karen: I guess he just snapped. Frank: Well they'll be enough time to sort out all of this later. Tomorrow is my first day as an intern. So I want to get some sleep. The group heads home. Chapter 37 The sun streams brightly into Frank and Julie's room. Julie rolls over and opens her eyes. She gazes lovingly at Frank and gently kisses him. Frank opens his eyes. Julie: Good morning handsome. Are you ready for your first day as a doctor. Frank pulls Julie close and kisses her. Then he smiles and gazes at her with total love. Frank: I have been of this day for what seems like my whole life. It's hard to believe that it's really here. Julie smiles and strokes his face. Julie: Well it is here, and if you don't get up your going to be late. Downstairs Mary is making a huge breakfast, and caring for the kids. Joe and Karen come down first. Mary: Hey good morning, is your brother up. Joe kisses his mom on the kids. Joe: Yeah Frank and Julie should be down soon. You know I though the day I started my internship was the most exciting day of my life but I think this has it beat. I can't believe Frank is finally a doctor, I can't think of anyone who deserves it more. Karen: I'm sure he's going to do great at it. Mary: Well of course he will, he was born to be a doctor. Helping others is his destiny. Julie and Frank come down and kiss the kids Frank kisses his mom. Julie: I have to agree with Mary. I remember thinking the first day of my internship as I watched him he is a natural. I felt that he should be a doctor and now he is. Frank: And I oh it all to my wonderful family especially my little brother. Mary hands out glasses of orange juice. Mary: I want to propose a toast gather around everyone. To my son. He has seen some hard times but he is now higher then he's ever been and I know he is going to be the best Doctor. Joe: Next to me of course. They all laugh. Frank: Well I better get going. Julie: Yeah I should to. Karen: I'm do in the OR in a couple of hours so I need to go to. Joe: I have appointments to so I'll give you a lift. They all leave. At the hospital the new interns get their assignments. Frank goes in to treat a man with a dislocated shoulder. Frank is very sweet and quickly corrects the problem. Man: Thank you Doctor. Frank fights to hold on to his composure. Frank: Your welcome. Just then a woman with a limp child comes running into the ER screaming. Lady: Someone please help me please someone help my baby he's not breathing. Frank quickly takes the child into the ER and fights to get him breathing. Frank quickly determines that the little kid has had an allergic reaction to some medicine. He quickly treats the child and soon the boy is breathing. Frank goes out to tell the mother the good new. Frank: Your son is going to be just fine. He had an allergic reaction to some medicine but the problem is solved and he can go home tomorrow. Mother: Oh thank you thank you Doctor. God bless you. She hugs Frank. Again Frank fights to keep his composure. Julie is watching from a distance and wipes a tear from her face. Frank: Your welcome, but you helped alot by getting him here quickly. I'll take you to see him. Later Frank gets in the elevator his Mom and Julie are already in it. Julie: Hey doctor how do you feel? Frank: There are no words. Julie: I saw you in action when you were caring for that little boy. Mary: You should be very proud of your self. Frank: I feel like I'm walking around in a dream. Every time someone says Doctor Scanlon I keep looking for Joe. But they are talking to me. It is just an unbelievable rush. Julie: You deserve it. They get off the elevator. Julie is paged to the ER. She smiles at Frank. Julie: Would you like to assist. Frank: Definitely. Hand in hand they head off together. THE END
