The tapping upon the window grew louder as Scott turned in his bed. He opened his eyes despite the overwhelming need to find some sense of closure. His life had been anything but simple over the last year and in his dreams where he’d once found peace, he was restless. Turning to face the window, he watched the night sky wondering what it was about his life that just drew complications to him. Perhaps it was his past, he thought to himself. He’d been far from saintly, but still in these quiet moments he had hoped that he’d find some sense of closure to that part of his life. Unable to wind down, Scott rose from the blankets making his way down the hallway to check on Serena. She’d been the bright spot in his day and Halloween was no doubt a time for fun for her. Each year she’d enjoyed the thrills and excitement that the season had to offer, but this year, well while she hadn’t said it, she seemed lost. It wasn’t like it had been when they’d all been a family, when she and Christina were dressed up for the occasion and out having a blast. Granted Lucy and Kevin had stopped by to take her out, but it just wasn’t the same. Nothing could ever be the same, he thought to himself as he recalled what being a single father meant. “Oh Dom,” he sighed closing his eyes as he thought back to the wife
he’d laid to rest so long ago, “I wish you were here. I wish that you could
show me the way somehow.”
Karen pressed through the parking lot, making her way across the street as she pulled her jacket around her body hugging it closer to her. She heard the winds rushing past her as she made her way towards the Recovery Room. Having worked Halloween eve was just awful and having a tyrant like Chris Ramsey working her to the bone was just not her idea of a good time either, but then again it beat spending a night at home fighting with Frank about what classic film to watch. Karen made her way towards the darkened Recovery Room wondering why she’d agreed to meet Frank at this hour when all she’d really wanted was to make her way home, to relax in a bubble bath or at the very least tuck herself in beneath her blankets and get lost in her dreams. She stepped up on the curb when a breeze rushed through her, seemingly causing her to stop in her tracks. She could’ve sworn she’d felt something brush over her shoulder, as if it had reached out to her, but as she looked behind her, there was just the wind. She turned back towards the Recovery Room making her way to the door as a loud thud crashed behind her. Turning abruptly she found the light bulb had fallen behind her as she’d nearly leapt out of her skin. “Get a grip Karen,” she took in a breath determined not to let herself fall victim to the night as her heart was pounding in her throat. She took in a soft breath feeling the wind gently blow her hair around her face causing a chill to rise from within her. Shaking the feeling that was building inside of her, Karen turned back to the Recovery Room ready to meet up with her destiny as she found herself caught up in what were quite possibly the bluest eyes she’d ever seen. “Why hello,” a twisted smile curled upon his lips, “I’ve been looking for you.” “Do I know you,” Karen blinked back in surprise watching him closely as a strong sense of familiarity washed over her. “You should,” he replied in a soft whisper reaching out to brush his index finger over her shoulder gently, “seeing as it’s my blood running through your veins.” “What?” she blinked back as she looked to him suddenly realizing what was before her. She stood taller matching his stare upon her, “what do you want?” “When I told Doctor Ramsey to bring me something incredible,” Caleb looked her over, “I had no idea that he’d pick such an exquisite subject for me to work with,” he extended his arm out towards her pressing his palm into her cheek, “but you are exquisite indeed.” “Don’t touch me,” she smacked his hand away from her as she felt a tremor rush through her, “I know what you are Caleb.” “Then you know it’s because of me that you’re feeling as good as you’ve been,” Caleb stepped in closer his breath falling over her face, “it’s because of me that you are alive again.” “Chris injected me with a needle,” Karen spoke tightly, “I’d hardly give you the credit for that jerk’s mistake.” “But it wasn’t a mistake,” Caleb smiled lightly, “I’ve been waiting a long time for you. For the moment when I would get you alone.” “Excuse me?” Karen blinked back in surprise. “Karen, can’t you see that all this time, after all these deceptions,” he reached out to caress her cheek as she instinctively leaned into his touch, “it’s you I’m after. It’s your heart I’ve been waiting to capture.” “Is this how you baited the others,” Karen questioned thinking back to her friends and their pain they’d gone through over the last few months. “The others were only a means to an end,” Caleb explained, “I had to
get them to a point where the truth would be far from them, far from the
world we were meant for,” He tipped his head in towards her as a breath
caught in her throat, “Karen, you are the one I was searching for. Olivia
was nothing. She was merely a distraction, but you and I,” he pressed in
closer, “we belong together. Our souls are one.”
Chris looked at the charts as a frown crossed over his features. This was just no good, no good indeed, he thought to himself as he tossed the fragments of his work aside. If only Karen hadn’t destroyed what he’d worked so hard upon, then they could both be sharing the benefits of the mix-up that had taken place in his office. She had been a lot more energized since the injection and extremely sexy, he thought with a smile as he remembered her playful ambush on him. Damn her for getting the best of him, yet she did have a certain appeal. Even now Chris could recall her lines and that smile of hers as a rush of warmth surged over him. “Think of this project,” Chris instructed turning his attention back
to his papers. There had to be some kind of answer to all of this. He had
to find a way to repair the damage Karen had caused or at least find a
way to make her cooperate with him. He smiled realizing that the latter
was something he’d much rather enjoy doing. Karen Wexler seemed to be a
worthy partner...now if he could only get her to see the potential they
had in working with one another.
A rush of cold air passed by as Scott turned towards his bedroom. The firehouse seemed so foreign tonight, so in need of some warming up, yet regardless of his attempts to play with the thermostat, there was still an icy chill in the air. Making his way into his bedroom, he anticipated covering up beneath the thick pile of blankets as he thought to Serena sleeping in her room. He’d checked on her a few times to make sure that the cold hadn’t gotten to her, but still he had plenty of reason to be concerned as the damned furnace was obviously broken. Closing the door behind him, Scott turned to his bed as he noted the mound of blankets piled up on the left side of his bed. Making his way over to straighten out his blankets, he pulled the comforter back as an iridescent white glow caught his eye. Turning around he saw her, beautiful as ever as she stood before the window wearing a soft white gown. Her hair fell upon her shoulders in soft ringlets as the glow around her offered up a golden highlight. His breath caught in his throat as he saw her, looking out to the night below. “Dominique,” he spoke softly afraid if he’d moved she’d disappear. “Scotty,” she spoke in her smooth, even tone. “You’re here. You’re really here,” Scott stepped forward slowly. “You needed me,” she answered still keeping her eyes away from him. “I always need you, and somehow when I’m at my lowest, you appear.” “Scotty,” she turned to face him her eyes filled with a concern as she looked to him, “I wish I could tell you the worst was over, but it’s not...” “Dominique,” he stood before her extending his arm out to touch her as his fingers pressed through her outline. “You’re about to face evil,” Dominique explained, “evil unlike anything you’ve ever known,” she reached out to him touching his cheek, “Scotty, you must be careful.” “Dom, what are you talking about?” he asked feeling a cool breeze wash over him. “She’s in trouble,” she explained solemnly, “You must help her.” “Help who?” Scott asked in confusion, “who’s in trouble?” “Your little girl needs your help,” she explained her voice full of pain as she looked to him, “you must find her before it’s too late.” “Serena’s fine,” Scott began, “I just checked in on her.” “Not Serena,” she shook her head. “I don’t understand....” “It’s Karen,” she blurted out, “Karen’s in trouble and it’s up to you to help her. You can’t let him take her.” “Who? Who is going to take Karen?” “You must find her,” Dominique whispered as she took a step back, “find her before it’s too late.” “Dom wait,” Scott began as she faded out of sight. A moment later he sat upright twisted beneath his blankets as a chill rushed through him. The dream it was too real, too chilling, too...he shook the thought as he reached for the phone. A call to Karen wouldn’t hurt. At least it would alleviate his fears, he thought to himself dialing her number as her answering machine picked up. “Karen, it’s Scott. Listen if you get in give me a buzz back. I was
just thinking about ya. Let me know if you’re okay....” he paused, “I love
you,” he finished hanging up the phone as he realized that calling hadn’t
helped at all. He needed to find out where his daughter was and soon.
