The beginning is mostly Chris and Julie -- the others will get involved more as the story progresses. This story begins with a different twist on what would have happend if Julie HAD stayed in Port Charles with Chris for the remainder of her days . . . . not to mention brought another surprise along with her for Chris . . . . .

Chapter 1

January 30, 2002 -- Eve and Jack walk down the hall of the hospital. ''I'm hoping he'll listen to you -- I've been trying for a half hour now to get him to come out, and he won't budge.'' Eve tells Jack.

''He knew this day was coming, but -- I guess it just didn't really hit him until now. I'll talk to him.'' Jack says, as they approach the hospital room. Jack slowly opens the door. Chris is lying draped over Julie's lifeless body, quietly sobbing. Jack walks up behind him. ''Chris -- you need to let her go.'' Jack says, putting his hand on Chris' shoulder.

''No -- no, Julie. Don't leave me yet, Julie.'' Chris begs.

''She's gone Chris -- I'm sorry. Come on -- I'll take you home, alright?'' Chris turns to Jack.

''Where is he?'' he asks.

''Downstairs in the nursery -- let's go pick him up, and we'll go home. Come on, you haven't gotten any sleep in days.'' Chris looks at Julie, and touches her cheek softly.

''I'm never gonna see her again.'' he says, as a tear rolls down his cheek.

''She'll always be with you, Chris -- she promised you that.'' Jack says. ''Come on -- it's late.'' Chris bends down and kisses Julie on the lips one last time.

''I love you, pooky.'' he whispers, and slowly gets up. Jack puts his arm around Chris' shoulder as they walk out the door.

A month earlier . . . . . . . . . .

December 24, 2001 -- Chris is stunned when Julie opens the hotel room door. ''Julie -- oh Julie, it's -- it's really you!'' Chris says, and he takes her in his arms. ''I -- I never thought I'd see you again.''

''I had to come back -- please, come in.'' Julie says, and takes his hand and leads him inside.

''Where's Christina? She must be so big by now.'' Chris says, and suddenly they hear a child crying from the other room. ''Is that her?'' Chris asks.

''Chris, I want you to meet someone.'' Julie says. ''Wait here.'' Julie goes into the other room, and she comes out carrying a little boy who is about one year old in her arms.

''Julie -- oh my god.'' Chris says, staring at the child in shock.

''This is your son, Chris. Isn't he beautiful?'' Julie sits down, holding the little boy close. Chris just stares at the boy.

''Why didn't you tell me?'' he asks.

''I didn't know, Chris. When I left, I -- I didn't know I was pregnant. I found out a few weeks later.'' Julie tells him.

''Why didn't you find some way to let me know, Julie? Why?''

''Because I knew what you'd do -- you'd drop your whole life, and come run off with us.''

''Yeah, you're damn right I would have -- Julie, how could you keep my son from me?'' Chris asks.

''Chris -- if we went on the run as a family, it would have been so hard for us to stay hidden. We would have been found out -- and they would have taken him from us. Our beautiful little boy -- they'd have taken him away.'' Chris is quiet for a moment.

''What's his name?''

''I thought about name him after you, but -- well you already have a namesake. And then I thought about naming him after my brother, Buddy, but -- well his name is the same as my father's, and couldn't do that to him. Do you remember that night, when we were talking about having a family. And we were talking about what names we both agreed on for boys and girls.''

''Tyler -- we both agreed on the name Tyler for a son.'' Chris recalls, and Julie nods her head.

''Tyler -- I want you to meet someone very special -- this is your daddy, Tyler. Remember how much I told you about him? Well, now he's here.'' Julie tells the little boy. ''Do you want to hold him?'' she asks Chris.

''Yes -- yes, I do.'' Chris says, and he takes the little boy in his arms. Tyler fusses for a moment, but quickly settles down. ''He has my eyes.'' Chris says, looking him over closely.

''I could swear I've seen him do that eyebrow trick of yours a couple of times.'' Julie says, laughing. ''He's a real handful -- you have no idea how much he reminds me of you.''

''When is his birthday?''

''Today -- he was my little Christmas miracle.'' Julie says.

''Today, huh? Well, happy birthday, son.'' Chris says, hugging the boy tightly. ''Oh Julie -- you came back because -- you changed your mind, right? We're gonna be a family now -- aren't we?''

''No.'' Julie says sadly.

''No -- what do you mean no? Julie -- I'm not walking away from my son. You can't ask me to do that.''

''I'm not -- I brought him here for you, Chris. I want you to raise our little boy.'' Julie tells him.

''Raise him? Not without you -- he needs his mother.''

''You need to find him another mother, Chris -- because I won't be able to be there.'' Julie says.

''What do you mean? Julie, you're not leaving us.''

''I don't want to -- I don't have a choice. I came here to give Christina back to Lucy, and to give you our son -- and to say goodbye.''

''No -- no, Julie unless you were dying there's no reason for you to --'' Chris stops as he notices the look on Julie's face. ''Oh, Julie no -- you're not --'' Julie nods her head yes.

''I have pancreatic cancer.'' Julie says, fighting back tears. ''I don't have much more time.''

''No -- Julie, we'll go to a specialist, we'll find the best doctors we can and --''

''I have Chris -- I've been to dozens of doctors. There's no hope -- the cancer has spread too far. And the treatment would just prolong the pain, and buy me a couple extra months. I can't do that -- not to my children, not to myself -- and not to you.''

''So what -- what am I supposed to do here?'' Chris asks.

''Let me go, Chris -- just let me go. And take care of our son.''

''How much longer do you have?'' Chris asks.

''About a month, maybe. It's hard to say.''

''Well, you're staying here. You're gonna stay here with me -- we'll spend every moment you have left together.''

''Chris, I'm wanted by the police -- if they know I'm here, I'll be arrested.''

''No -- we'll find a way around it. Julie -- you're sick. They can't arrest you if you're sick.''

''Yes they can, Chris.''

''No -- I'll stop them. I'll do something -- I just want you to stay Julie. If you don't have much time left, I want the rest of that time spent with me. Please -- for me -- and for our son.'' Julie pauses for a moment.

''I think Kevin might be willing to help us.'' Julie says.

''Kevin Collins?''

''I contacted him, and asked him to return Christina to Lucy for me. I know he's friends with Mac Scorpio, so --''

''You contacted Kevin -- but not me?''

''I'm sorry -- I just wasn't ready to --''

''Where is Christina now?'' Chris asks.

''She's with Kevin and Lucy. They're her parents now.''

''Julie I -- I still think of Christina as my daughter. I want to see her.''

''I plan on talking to Kevin about that. I mean, since Christina and Tyler are brother and sister -- oh, and Christina is such a good big sister to him, she's crazy about him. I'm going to make sure that they allow you to have visitation with Christina, so that she and Tyler can still be together on some level.''

''You expect me to make with nice with Kevin Collins after all he did to us?'' Chris asks.

''Yes I do, Chris. For your son's sake.'' Chris sighs, then looks down and notices that Tyler has fallen asleep in his arms.

''Is he sleeping?'' Chris asks.

''Yeah, he is. He's obviously very comfortable with you -- why don't you go put him down in his crib?'' Chris carefully picks the boy up and carries him into the other room, then comes back out and sits back down next to Julie.

''He's just so -- incredible.''

''I know.'' Julie says.

''I want to know all about him, Julie -- what does he like? What doesn't he like? I've got so many questions --''

''I know you do sweetheart -- but I'm exhausted right now. I get tired really easily nowadays.''

''Of course you do -- I'm sorry. How about we just go to bed, okay?''

''You're staying here?'' Julie asks.

''I'm staying with you and my son -- you're my family.'' Chris says, and he pulls Julie into a kiss.

January 3, 2002 -- Julie settles into her bed in the hospital. ''Chris -- this isn't how I wanted things to be.'' she says. ''I didn't want to be in the hospital when I --''

''I know, baby -- but this was the best deal we could work out. Mac agreed to let you be in here, with a guard outside your door, for the rest of the time you --'' Chris stops.

''Chris, you need to accept it. I have.''

''Well, I haven't yet. I need more time, Julie.'' Chris says. ''I tried to make it as nice as possible for you in here -- do you like the room?''

''It's beautiful -- how did you arrange for one of the suites?''

''Tossed some money around -- by the way, I got my job back -- Kevin put in a good word for me. Imagine that, huh -- Kevin Collins speaking up on MY behalf.''

''Stranger things have happened.''

''You have no idea what's been going on in this town, Julie -- you wouldn't believe me if I told you, anyway.'' Chris looks over at the crib that set up next to Julie's bed. ''So -- you think Tyler likes his new accommodations?''

''He's used to moving around a lot -- he can settle in just about anywhere.'' Julie says.

''He doesn't cry a lot -- that's pretty good for a kid his age, isn't it?''

''He only cries when he's hungry or wants attention -- and usually he gets plenty of it from me. He's a really happy baby, he always has been.''

''You know, Eve has a son now, Daniel -- maybe they can be friends.''

''I guess that's gonna be up to you -- Eve WAS the one who tried to keep us from getting married.''

''So did Kevin -- you apparently have forgiven HIM.''

''I guess you're right.'' Julie says, and the door opens.

''Hey -- come on in!'' Chris says, as Jack enters the room.

''They told me at the desk I could find you here -- I'm glad you finally called me, I was getting worried after you disappeared for a week.'' Jack says.

''I'm sorry about that -- Jack I want you to meet some people. This is my wife, Julie. Julie, this is Jack -- my brother.''

''Hi -- it's nice to meet you, Chris has told me so much about you.'' Julie says.

''He has?'' Jack asks, surprised.

''And this --'' Chris begins, walking over to the crib, ''Is your nephew, Tyler. Tyler -- meet your Uncle Jack.'' Chris says, trying to hand the baby over to him. ''Well go on, hold him.''

''I'm -- not too good with babies.'' Jack says, pushing him away.

''Oh, go on -- he's a Ramsey, he's tough, you're not gonna break him.'' Chris says.

''He's not gonna try and lift my wallet while I hold him, is he?'' Jack asks.

''No, we haven't gotten to that lesson yet.'' Chris says, laughing. Jack finally picks up the boy.

''Hey kid -- how you doing? You like motorcycles -- I can teach you to ride when you get big enough.'' Jack says to him.

''Is he serious?'' Julie asks.

''Unfortunately, yes.'' Chris says. ''So -- any new on the Livvie front?''

''She's leaving next week -- she decided that she wants to study in Europe, and I'm not gonna move there. I can't afford that, and I'm and not having my girlfriend support me.'' Jack says.

''Hey, if it's money you need, I can --''

''And I'm not taking money from you either, Chris. I'll manage without Livvie -- I guess it just wasn't meant to be.'' Jack says.

''Well, maybe you two need some time getting to know each other again -- I think I'd like that.'' Julie comments.

''So would I.'' Chris says. ''And besides -- I think Tyler kind of likes his Uncle Jack.''

''Hey, he's got good taste -- you know, if you'd have told me a month ago we'd be in here like this, as a family, I'd have told them they were crazy.'' Jack says.

''Me too -- but if I've learned anything in this past year, it's that anything's possible -- even this.'' Chris comments.

January 4, 2002 -- the door to Julie's room opens. ''Can I come in?'' Karen asks.

''Karen -- hi. Of course you can come in.'' Julie says. She's holding Tyler in her arms.

''I couldn't believe it when Chris told everyone that you were here -- and that you were --''

''It's okay -- you can say it. I've made my peace with it.'' Julie says.

''Julie, he's adorable -- can I hold him?'' Karen asks.

''Sure -- it's amazing, he's not used to this much attention, but he's sure eating it all up. He loves it.'' Julie says, handing Tyler over to Karen.

''Well, he's Chris' son, so that makes sense.'' Karen says, and Julie laughs. ''How IS Chris taking this?''

''He's still in denial -- I keep hoping he'll come to terms with it eventually. I think he just needs more time.'' Julie gets quiet for a moment. ''Karen, I know we -- our friendship kind of got on the wrong track, but -- I'd like a chance to fix that.''

''You know, I -- when Chris told everyone yesterday what was going on, I -- I was hesitant to come and visit you. But I figured not many people would and -- we were friends once before, Julie. There's no reason we can't be again.''

''I'm glad you feel that way.'' Julie says. ''I could really use a friend right now.''

''Well, then -- you've got one.'' Karen says, and she gives Julie a hug as she hands Tyler back to her.

''So, I hear you're dating Frank now.''

''Yeah, I am.''

''Are you happy?'' Julie asks.

''Very.'' Karen replies. ''You know, I'm really glad you're here. Chris has been a real wreck since you left -- it was only a matter of time before he self-destructed. I've already noticed a tremendous change in him in the last 24 hours.''

''I only wish I had more time.'' Julie says. ''But Chris will still have Tyler.''

''Do you think he's ready for that? Being a father?''

''He has to be -- Tyler will need him. Karen, I -- I hope you'll help him -- he won't ask for any help, Chris is too proud for that. But he'll need it. And Tyler will need some kind of mother figure in his life. I told Chris I want him to move on when I'm gone, but -- I just want to make sure someone is there to help him out. Will you promise to look after them for me?''

''I guess I could do that -- how could I resist this little guy, huh?'' Karen says, smiling at the little boy.

January 15, 2002 -- Julie starts to wake up, with Chris sitting at her side. ''Chris.'' she whispers.

''I'm here.'' Chris replies, squeezing her hand. ''Did you have a good nap?''

''Yeah.'' Julie replies. ''Has Karen been by?''

''Not today -- do you want me to find her, did you want to see her?''

''I wanted to ask you something first -- Karen and I have been --- getting re-acquainted the last couple of weeks, and -- I wanted to ask her for a favor. But I want to make sure it's okay with you, first.''

''What's that?''

''I want Karen to be Tyler's godmother.'' Julie says. ''I want her to help you out with him after I'm gone.''

''If that's what you want -- it's fine with me.'' Chris says.

''Thank you.'' Julie says. ''I think I'll feel much better knowing that Karen will be there for you.''

''I'll go find her.''

''Can you wait a little while -- Lucy should be coming over with Christina soon.''

''Sure -- anything you want, honey. Anything you want.'' Chris says, and he kisses her.

January 16, 2002 -- ''Well? Aren't you going to say anything?'' Karen asks.

''You really want to do this. You really want to be the godmother for Ramsey's kid -- Karen, you realize what this entails, don't you?'' Frank asks.

''Of course I do, Frank -- but how can I say no? Julie is dying, and -- that little boy has nobody else, Frank. Chris is gonna have a rough enough time as it is. I know his brother Jack is helping him out, but -- he needs some kind of mother figure in his life. He's just a little baby, Frank. I know how you feel about Chris, but -- that little boy did nothing wrong, and he's gonna lose his mother soon. Julie is my friend -- I can't say no to her, Frank. I just can't.''

''You're gonna be there every day, aren't you?''

''For the first few weeks -- probably. Just to help them get settled. Frank -- please don't be mad at me for this. It has nothing to do with us.'' Karen says.

''I could never be mad at you -- it's Ramsey I don't trust.'' Frank says.

''I'm not doing this for Chris -- I'm doing this for Tyler.'' Karen tells him. ''And for Julie.''

''Well, I guess I don't have much of a say in the matter, do I? You do what you need to do -- I'll support you whatever you decide.'' Frank says, and Karen happily hugs him and kisses him intensely.

January 30, 2002 -- early evening. Chris sits by Julie's bedside, holding her hand. ''Make sure Tyler -- doesn't forget me.'' Julie whispers.

''He'll never forget you, Julie -- I won't let him.'' Chris says, desperately trying to fight back his tears. ''You're not in any pain, are you sweetheart?''

''No -- not anymore.'' Julie replies. ''You made me so happy Chris.''

''No, Julie, don't do this -- please. I love you Julie, please.'' Chris begs.

''I love you too -- my prince.'' Julie says in a soft whisper, then closes her eyes and takes her last breath.

''JULIE!!!'' Chris cries out, and lays his head down on her chest, sobbing.

January 31, 2002 -- late morning. Jack is in Chris' apartment, in the kitchen, as Tyler sits in his high chair, screaming. ''Alright, alright, I'm coming! Gimme a break, I'm new at this!'' Jack says, getting some breakfast for the little boy. ''Here you go -- some nice, warm cereal for you.'' Tyler shoves the spoon away, the food splattering in Jack's face, and starts to laugh. ''Oh, you think that's funny, huh?'' Jack says, grabbing a towel to wipe his face. ''Listen kid -- you're dealing with your Uncle Jack here -- I'm not a sucker for slapstick like your father is. So just shut up and eat.'' Almost knowingly, the little boy takes the food from Jack with no argument. ''That's more like it.'' Jack says. After a few minutes, the doorbell rings. Jack goes to answer it -- it's Karen. ''Thank GOD!'' Jack says, letting her in.

''Rough morning?'' Karen asks, noting the splattered food on Jack's shirt.

''You could say that -- you want to finish?''

''Sure, no problem -- how's Chris doing?'' Karen asks.

''He's still asleep -- he was exhausted, he's been up nonstop the last few days with Julie.''

''Eve called me last night -- I heard he took it pretty hard.''

''Yeah -- I don't think he was ready to let her go.'' Jack says. ''The only consolation he really has is this little boy here.''

''And you -- it's good of you to be here for him -- given your past and all.''

''Chris and I are -- trying to mend fences.'' Jack tells her.

''That's good.'' Karen says. Chris comes out of the bedroom, still looking exhausted, his hair somewhat tousled and about 3 days worth of stubble on his face.

''Hey -- how you doing?'' Jack asks. ''Did you sleep okay?''

''Not really -- I kept dreaming about Julie.'' Chris tells him. ''Hey Karen -- you didn't have to rush over here today.''

''I had the day off, and Eve called me last night -- I kind of had the feeling you'd need some help, so -- here I am.'' Karen says.

''Thanks.'' Chris says, and he walks up to Tyler. ''Hey buddy -- you having a good breakfast?''

''I think he's about done.'' Karen says. Tyler lifts his arms up, motioning to Chris to pick him up. ''Boy, he's really bonded with you pretty fast.'' Karen comments.

''Yup, that's my boy -- he's such a great kid.'' Chris says, picking up Tyler and giving him a kiss on the cheek. The doorbell rings. Chris sighs. ''I'm not in the mood to see anyone right now.'' he says.

''I'll get it -- I'll send them away.'' Karen says, and she goes to the door and opens it. ''Can I help you?'' she asks the woman standing in the hallway.

''My name is Dorothy Malecki -- I'm with Social Services. Does Dr. Chris Ramsey live here?'' the woman asks.

''Is there a problem?'' Chris asks, hearing the woman.

''Are you Dr. Ramsey?'' the woman asks.

''Yes I am -- can I help you?'' Chris says.

''I understand that you have an infant boy living with you.'' the woman says.

''No, what I'm holding is a figment of your imagination.'' Chris sarcastically remarks.

''Chris -- don't, not now.'' Jack says, obviously growing nervous. ''Look -- my brother just lost his wife yesterday -- can you come back later?''

''I'm afraid not. Dr. Ramsey -- there are no birth records for this boy who is going by the name of -- Tyler Julian Ramsey, is correct?'' the woman asks.

''Look -- my wife didn't deliver him under normal circumstances -- but he's my son.'' Chris says.

''I'm sure he is -- but until you provide the courts with proof of paternity and petition for custody -- I'm afraid he's going to have to come with me.'' the woman tells him, as Chris, Jack, and Karen stare at each other in shock.

Chapter Two

Chris holds Tyler close, glaring at the woman. ''You're not taking my son. Now get out.'' he says angrily.

''I'm sorry sir -- I don't have a choice. I have a court order that --'' the woman from Social Services begins.

''I don't give a damn what your court order says -- Tyler is MY son, I'm his father, and this is his home. And if you don't leave right now, I'm calling the police.'' Chris tells her emphatically.

''Chris -- can I talk to you for a minute?'' Jack says, clearly nervous about the situation.

''There's nothing to talk about Jack.'' Chris says, and he turns to the social worker. ''Now if you'll excuse me, I need to give my son a bath and get him dressed. He needs some new clothes, we need to go shopping.'' Chris starts to head into the other room with the boy.

''Dr. Ramsey -- if you don't cooperate, I can have you arrested.'' Ms. Malecki says.

''Go ahead -- try it.'' Chris remarks.

''Chris -- I'm serious. Let's go in the other room.'' Jack says.

''Let me take him.'' Karen says, reaching for Tyler.

''NO -- nobody's taking him from me.'' Chris tells her.

''Chris -- just let Karen hold him -- it'll only be a minute.'' Jack says, and Chris very reluctantly gives Tyler to Karen, and goes in the bedroom with Jack.

''What?'' Chris says.

''You're gonna have to let her take him, Chris -- I've been through the whole Social Services deal, I know the drill inside and out. The only way you can fight these people is on THEIR terms. We'll get you a lawyer, and you'll get him back. But until then you don't have a choice.'' Jack tells him.

''Like hell I don't. I'm outta here Jack -- I'm gonna take my son, and get the hell out of this town.''

''Just like Julie did? Living a life on the run, hiding your real identity -- never being able to practice medicine again? Having Tyler go up with no roots, no friends -- is that the kind of life you want for him?'' Chris doesn't say a word. ''Chris -- you know what that's like. We both do -- just when you start to make a friend, or like a school, or actually feel like a normal kid -- your father packs you up and moves you along, and you have to start all over again. Think back, Chris -- think back to what it was like for us. Do you want your son to have to go through that?'' Chris sits down on the edge of the bed, tears starting to form in his eyes.

''I'm never gonna be able to get custody of him, Jack. I've done too much -- I'm not exactly a saint.''

''That's what an attorney will do -- they'll advise you on what to do so that you CAN get him back. Dammit Chris, for once in your life, try cooperating instead of scheming. Things will work out. The courts have to grant you visitation at this point at the very least. Take it one step at a time, and you'll get him back. But if you fight this, you could lose him -- forever.'' Chris doesn't say a word, and walks out into the living room. Tyler is happily sitting on Karen's lap, smiling. Chris walks over and takes the boy.

''Let me get some of his things.'' Chris says to the social worker, and he goes into the other room with the little boy. There is an awkward silence in the room, as both Jack and Karen glare at Ms. Malecki.

''I hope you know what this is doing to him -- his wife just died YESTERDAY, you know. That little boy was the only thing keeping him going. And now you're gonna take him away, too.'' Jack says to the woman.

''I'm sorry.'' Ms. Malecki says. ''I'm sure that once your brother gets an attorney, we can get this matter straightened out and his son will be back with him. I'll do my best to arrange for visitation for them as soon as I get back to the office.''

''Chris is a good father -- he loves that kid.'' Jack says.

''I'm sure he does.'' Ms. Malecki says. Chris comes out of the room, carrying Tyler and a small bag.

''I put some of his clothes in here. And this is his blanket. Please don't lose it, his -- his mother made it for him. He sleeps with it every night. He doesn't cry much, but he's used to getting a lot of attention, so you can't just dump him in a crib and leave him there. He takes a nap around noon and usually sleeps until about three. He doesn't like carrots, and --''

''I'm sure we'll find all these things out. He'll be fine, Dr. Ramsey.'' Chris looks the little boy in the eye.

''Hey -- this nice lady is gonna take you for awhile. But don't worry -- Daddy will come and get you soon. You be a good boy, okay.'' Chris holds his tears back as he reluctantly hands the boy over to the social worker. Tyler starts to scream loudly as the woman starts to walk away with him. Chris buries his face in his hands, unable to watch. Karen closes the door as the woman leaves. Chris sits down on the couch, devastated. Karen sits down next to him, and puts her arm around him.

''It'll be okay, Chris.'' she says.

''HOW? How in the hell can it be okay?'' Chris asks.

''I'll call my father -- maybe he can help.''

''Oh that's just exactly what I need -- how long do you think it'll take for him to laugh when you tell him WHO you're asking him to represent?'' Chris asks. ''He'll probably say I'm getting what I deserve.''

''Chris -- Scott knows what it's like to have a child taken from him. I know he can help you -- and he's a good attorney.'' Karen tells him. ''Let me call him.''

''Well, it's not like I have anything to lose -- I've already lost everything I care about anyway.'' Chris says sadly. ''Go ahead -- call him.''

Later that afternoon, Scott arrives at Chris' apartment. Chris opens the door to let him in. Chris still looks very unkempt and unshaved. ''You know Ramsey, if you go into court looking like that, they'll never let you near the kid based on your appearance alone.'' Scott comments.

''How nice -- a man who cuts his hair with a weed whacker is giving me grooming tips.'' Chris comments.

''Alright you two -- knock it off. I didn't call Scott over here so that you two could trade insults.'' Karen says.

''Why DID you call me, Karen? Am I the only guy in town who'll even consider representing this weasel?'' Scott asks.

''See, I told you this was a bad idea, Karen.'' Chris says.

''Chris, just SIT down and listen to what he has to say.'' Karen tells him. Chris sighs and sits down, as does Scott.

''Okay -- first of all, did you and Julie have any kind of legal documentation to grant you custody of your kid?'' Scott asks. Chris sighs.

''Julie put it in her will that Tyler was my son, and that I had a right to be granted custody of him. Tyler doesn't have a birth certificate, and -- we were planning on dealing with that, but -- Julie was so sick, I spent every minute I could with her. I planned to make it all official, but -- obviously I never even got the chance.'' Chris tells him.

''Well then -- looks like that's all you need to do. I'll go down to the courthouse and try and get a hearing set up for tomorrow. I should have this all straightened out by the end of the week, and you'll have your son back. Now I'd go and shave if I were you -- I'm not representing anyone that looks like a bum.'' Scott comments. Chris glares at him, and goes into the other room.

''Scott -- do you have to be so rude?'' Karen asks.

''Oh come on, it's Ramsey -- how can I NOT be rude, the guy's a jackass.'' Scott says.

''Maybe -- but he's been through a lot this past month. Try showing a little bit of compassion for him.''

''Compassion? Karen, that guy's nutty wife kidnaped my kid for a year and a half.''

''And Chris had NOTHING to do with that! All he wants is to get his son back. I promised Julie I'd help take care of Tyler, and that's what I'm doing. That's why I asked you to help Chris.''

''I'm not sure I like you hanging around here so much, Karen. I don't trust that idiot.''

''Well, then you'll just have to trust ME -- I know what I'm doing, Scott.'' Karen tells him.

That evening, Karen enters her apartment. She turns on the light, and finds Frank sitting on the couch, glaring at her. ''Where were you?'' he asks pointedly.

''Frank -- what are you doing here?'' Karen asks.

''Waiting for you -- I called your cell I don't know HOW many times. We had a date tonight, Karen. Or did you forget?''

''Oh Frank, I'm sorry -- so many things happened today, and Chris --''

''What's Ramsey got to do with this? I thought you were just going to pop over there in the morning, check out how things were, and then leave. Are you telling me you spent the whole day holding Chris' hand over at his apartment?'' Frank asks.

''It's not like that, Frank -- something happened today. Social Services came and took Tyler away from Chris.'' Frank doesn't look surprised at all. ''Frank -- did you hear what I just said?''

''Yeah --- so basically, the county figured out that Ramsey isn't fit to raise a plant, let alone a kid.''

''Frank -- Chris LOVES his son. I know what you think of him, and in many ways you're right -- but not about this. He was devastated today -- he needed help, and I got it for him. Scott is helping him out with all the legal proceedings.''

''SCOTT is helping CHRIS???? Are we in a ‘Twilight Zone' episode?'' Frank asks.

''He's doing it as a favor to me.'' Karen tells him. ''It's not a big deal, there's just some paperwork that wasn't completed that needs to be taken care of in order for Chris to have full custody of Tyler. It should be resolved by the end of the week -- but Chris just lost Julie yesterday, and this was one blow he didn't need. He took it really hard, and I didn't feel right leaving him alone. I'm sorry I forgot about our date. It won't happen again -- I promise.''

''Well -- okay. I just don't like you hanging around Ramsey, he's got this nasty habit of going after every woman I've ever been involved with, and he already admitted that he was in love with you and --''

''Do I detect a hint of jealousy, Frank Scanlon?'' Karen asks.

''I'm not jealous, I just -- well, okay, maybe I'm a little jealous. But you've gotta admit, I have reason to be. Sort of.'' Karen just laughs.

''Come here, you.'' Karen says, and she pulls Frank into a kiss.

February 1, 2002 -- Chris paces in the judge's office as he waits. ''What's taking so long?'' Chris asks.

''Chris, sit down. They'll be here any minute.'' Jack tells him.

''He's probably scared. He doesn't know any of those people. He's already had to deal with so many new faces, and now --''

''Chris -- it's only been one day. I'm sure he's fine.'' Jack reassures him. Karen enters the room.

''What are you doing here?'' Chris asks Karen.

''I just came for moral support. I want to make sure that everything goes alright, so I switched my shift at work today.'' Karen says.

''You didn't have to do that.'' Chris tells her.

''I know.'' Karen says. The judge enters the room, along with Scott and another man, who is dressed very professionally.

''Dr. Ramsey -- I've reviewed your petition for custody, and everything seems to be in order. Your paternity test results are being processed, and we should have them in a few days.'' the judge tells him.

''And then I can take him home, right?'' Chris asks.

''I'm afraid it's not that simple, Dr. Ramsey -- you see --'' the judge begins.

''Not that simple? He's my son, I'm his father -- it doesn't take a rocket scientist to do the math.'' Chris comments.

''Ramsey -- just shut up. There's something else I -- just found out about.'' Scott says.

''What are you talking about?'' Chris asks.

''Dr. Ramsey -- another party has submitted a petition for custody of Tyler. And this is a petition that the court has to seriously consider. I'm afraid that this is going to go to trial, Dr. Ramsey. Now until then, I've arranged for daily visits during the week for two hours a day, and you can have Tyler every other weekend, from Friday evening until Monday morning. Your attorney has all the paperwork.'' the judge says.

''What other party? Tyler is MY son -- I want to know who the hell thinks they have ANY right at all to my son?'' Chris asks angrily.

''Me.'' a woman says, as the door to the judge's office opens. Everyone turns around, stunned to see Nicole Devlin enter the room . . . . . .

Chapter 3

"Hello Chris." Nicole says, as Chris glares at her angrily. "It's been a long time."

"Yeah -- it has." Chris says, clearly furious. He turns to the judge. "I need to talk to my attorney -- in private."

"I'll give you fifteen minutes." the judge says. "You can use my office." Chris and Scott go into the judge's office, and close the door behind them.

"What the hell is she doing here? When did you find out about this?" Chris asks, fuming.

"Hey, I knew nothing about it myself until I just met with the judge. I was about to tell you when -- well, she beat me to it." Scott tells him.

"So that other suit -- is he --"

"David Cavalli -- one of the top child custody attorneys in the country. She's serious, Ramsey -- she wants your kid, and she's gonna do whatever she can to get him."

"Nicole barely gave a damn about Julie -- where the hell was she when her own daughter was DYING, huh? And now she wants Julie's SON? No way -- there is no way in hell I'm letting that banshee get anywhere near Tyler." Chris says.

"I'm afraid you don't have a choice."

"Like hell I don't."

"Chris -- the judge granted Nicole visitation every other weekend. Her and her -- husband."

"HUSBAND???"

"She got married again -- her husband just got a staff position at GH, he's a doctor."

"So why does she want my son?"

"How the hell do I know? Revenge, greed -- the kid's worth a fortune with the size of a trust fund Julie left him. She's gonna rake you over the coals in court Ramsey, I hope you know that."

"Well, we'll just have to play equally as dirty then. Because I'll see Nicole Devlin in HELL before I ever let her anywhere near my son." Chris says.

Chris enters his apartment, carrying Tyler in his arms. "So, are you glad to be back home, buddy? I know, it's only for a couple of days, but -- listen, you're daddy's gonna fix this, alright?" Chris sits down with the boy on his lap, as Karen and Jack also enter the apartment, carrying several bags.

"Chris, don't you think you went a bit overboard with the toys here?" Jack asks.

"Hey -- he's my kid, I can spoil him however I want." Chris says.

"Chris, he's probably hungry -- let me feed him." Karen says. Chris agrees, and hands Tyler to her.

"Karen -- you don't need to hang around here so much. Jack and I can handle things."

"I know, but -- look, with everything going around for this poor little guy, I don't want to just disappear from his life. He's gotten used to me being around, since I was with Julie every day, and -- I just think he deserves some kind of consistency in his life." Karen tells him. Jack sits down on the couch next to Chris.

"So -- what's up with this Nicole? She sounds like about as good a parent as our old man was." Jack comments.

"They're about in the same league. So I don't buy this sudden 'devoted grandmother' act. Nicole only gave a damn about Julie when Julie fit into this little image she had of a perfect daughter. When Julie was on trial, she only showed up once, and then it was to tell her what a disappointment she was. Nice, huh? She never even so much as made one lousy phone call while Julie was in the hospital. I know that woman Jack -- all she wants from Tyler is his bank account."

"Well, from what I see -- she's gonna be trouble." Jack says.

"Well -- she just doesn't know who she's dealing with then. Because however much trouble she thinks she can be -- I can match it, and top it. There is NO way she's getting custody of Tyler. It'll be over my dead body before I let that happen."

February 4, 2002 -- Chris arrives at the hospital in the late afternoon. He runs into Eve at the Nurses Station. "What are you doing here, Ramsey? I thought you were taking a few weeks off." Eve comments.

"I have some patients I wanted to look in on. So what's new here?" Chris asks.

"We got a new resident on staff -- tall, southern -- gorgeous."

"So, does Thornhart know you've got a new crush? I mean -- given how you two ended up together and all --"

"Oh, shut up, Ramsey -- hey, I can still look. Besides -- he's married."

"Again -- let's see, with your past relationship history --" Eve glares at him angrily.

"Oh, just forget I said anything. I don't even know why I bother with you." Eve says, and stomps off. Chris just shakes his head, and goes behind the desk to look for any messages he might have. He looks up just as a man steps off the elevator. He is tall, mid-30's, medium-length brown hair. The man walks over to the desk.

"Are there any messages for me?" he asks in a southern drawl, while reading over some charts. Chris just glares at him. The man finally looks up. "Well I'll be damned -- Chris Ramsey. Fancy meeting you here. So -- you the secretary here?"

"I'm the Chief Resident." Chris says smugly. "Which kind of makes me -- your BOSS."

"Bet you're surprised to see me here, huh?" the man asks.

"I'm surprised you actually made it through your internship." Chris comments. "But, I guess every hospital has their share of middle-aged woman doctors who have no social life and can be swayed to make any decision, no matter how stupid, if the offer suits them." The man just laughs.

"Are you still bitter about that?" he asks. "Hey -- I won that fellowship fair and square."

"You won that fellowship horizontally." Chris says. "Who hired you, anyway?"

"Oh -- my new wife had some connections -- she got me the interview."

"Someone was actually stupid enough to marry you? I hope she got a good pre-nup." Chris comments.

"Well, there she is now." the man says, and he turns to see Nicole step off the elevator. "Hey honey -- look who I ran into." Nicole walks up to them, as Chris' jaw drops in shock.

"Chris -- I see you've met Lance. Lance Mayfield -- this is Chris Ramsey." Nicole says.

"Oh -- trust me -- no introductions are necessary. Lance and go way back. You know -- if you weren't trying to take my son away from me Nicole, I'd actually be happy for you. In a sick way -- you two deserve each other." Chris says.

"Chris -- can't we just be reasonable about this? I'd be more than willing to allow you to see Tyler on weekends, and holidays --" Nicole begins.

"ALLOW me? You want to ALLOW me to see my son? Gee -- thanks but no thanks, Nicole -- I'll see you in court." Chris says, and he stomps off.

Chris arrives home, and immediately heads for the bar, making himself a martini. "Chris, what are you doing?" Jack asks, coming out of the bedroom.

"Getting drunk. Do you have a problem with that?" Chris asks.

"Yes I do -- a representative from Social Services is going to be here any minute. I've spent the last half hour trying to call you. They want to check out the place that Tyler would be living." Jack says. Chris puts down the martini glass.

"Great -- as if this day couldn't get any worse." Chris says. Just then, the doorbell rings. Chris goes to answer it.

"Dr. Ramsey -- I'm Lynn Walker, from Social Services. May I come in?" the woman says.

"Sure -- come on in." Chris says. "I didn't know someone would be coming over. I just got home, and --"

"I only called you as a courtesy, because of everything that's happened to you lately. I talked to your brother. Now, I'm here to find out what kind of environment Tyler would be raised in should you be granted custody." The woman begins walking around the room, looking around. "Well, your place is very -- nice, but --- where is Tyler's room?"

"Right now his crib is in my room. My brother Jack is living with me -- he has the spare room." Chris says.

"I see -- you know, I don't see much baby-proofing around here." the woman comments.

"Ma'am -- my brother's wife just passed away. He was at the hospital every day -- and then this custody thing was sprung on him. In his defense, he hasn't had time to do much of anything. But Tyler will have a good home here -- I guarantee it." Jack explains.

"May I make a recommendation?" the woman asks.

"I suppose." Chris says, clearly upset with the whole situation.

"I would seriously consider purchasing a house. Something that has a more conducive atmosphere to raising a child. This place just isn't -- well, appropriate." the woman suggests.

"And who the hell are you to tell me what is and isn't appropriate for my SON? You don't even know anything about me. You don't know anything about Tyler. You don't know anything about NICOLE MORRIS DEVLIN MAYFIELD whatever-the-hell her name is now -- how about I fill you in on her, huh? How about I fill you in on HER fantastic parenting skills -- it should take about thirty seconds." Chris remarks angrily.

"Dr. Ramsey -- I'm only doing my job. And frankly -- you're not making a very good impression on me." the woman says. "I've seen all I need to see." The woman leaves, and Chris slams the door behind her.

"Oh, that was a good move." Jack remarks.

"Don't start with me, Jack." Chris says, going back to the martini bar and getting himself a drink.

"So -- what happened today?" Jack asks. Chris downs a martini and sits down, then begins to talk.

"I just found out that Nicole's new 'husband' is a first class jackass-slash-gigolo that I used to go to med school with. He bedded every female professor we had -- which explains how he actually GRADUATED from med school. I lost a fellowship that should have rightfully been mine because of him and his overactive libido. I may not be a saint, Jack -- but this guy sure as hell makes me look like one. And now he and that viper are after my SON."

"Well, I'm sure Scott can use whatever you have on this guy against him in court."

"It'll never stick -- I have no proof. I've watched this guy work -- he can lie and charm his way out of the worst situation imaginable. I'd almost be impressed by him if I didn't hate him so damned much."

"Look -- right now, your focus needs to be what's best for Tyler. Maybe we should take that lady's advice and look for a house."

"Who are you now, my mother?"

"Well, you obviously need someone to tell you what to do -- you're not thinking clearly, Chris. And I don't want to see you lose your son. I think it's time you give up the bachelor pad and settle down in a house -- for Tyler." Chris sighs.

"Alright -- but this is for TYLER, not because you told me to do it." Chris says.

"Fine. We'll start looking tomorrow." Jack says.

February 14, 2002 -- "So, you like it?" Chris asks Karen, as he walks her through the halfway furnished house.

"It's great, Chris -- I love it!" Karen says. "Hey -- have you decided how you're gonna decorate Tyler's room yet? I saw some really cute wallpaper prints the other day with little animals on it."

"God, you think like a girl. I was gonna go with a baseball motif." Chris suggests.

"He's one year old, he doesn't care about baseball." Karen says.

"Yeah, but he will -- someday." Chris says. "So -- how about you let me take you out to dinner?"

"Don't you get Tyler tomorrow?"

"Yeah, but -- I'm ready for him. Come on -- it's my way of showing how much I appreciate all you've done for us in the past month."

"Well, okay -- why not." Karen says, and they leave.

Frank sits alone at a table at the Port Charles Grill, looking at his watch nervously. "Come on Karen, where are you?" he says, clearly upset. The Mai'tre D comes up to him.

"Sir -- I'm afraid that I cannot hold your table any longer. If you don't order anything, you'll have to leave. I'm sorry." the man says.

"No -- no problem, I'll -- I'll go." Frank replies. He's just about to leave, when he spots Karen and Chris entering the restaurant, talking and laughing. Frank begins to fume, as Karen immediately spots him.

"Frank -- what are you doing here?" Karen asks.

"What am I doing here?" Frank asks. "Did you not look at your CALENDAR today? Or were you too busy playing house with this scumbag to notice?"

"Hey, watch it!" Chris says.

"You know, I'd keep my mouth shut if I were you Ramsey, unless you want to find my FIST in it." Frank comments angrily. Karen suddenly realizes what the day is.

"Oh Frank -- it's Valentine's Day. We were supposed to meet here." Karen recalls.

"Yeah -- almost TWO HOURS ago!" Frank says. "You know -- you have fun with Ramsey tonight. It's obvious you'd rather be with him, anyway." Frank stomps out the door.

"Frank, wait!" Karen calls out, and runs after him, but is unable to catch up with him. Chris follows her, and puts his arm on her shoulder.

"I'm sorry Karen -- I didn't mean to screw things up for you." Chris says.

"Are you sure you didn't?" Karen says.

"Karen -- honestly -- I didn't even make the connection as to what today was. I only wanted you to see my new house."

"Sure you did -- this is just SO like you, Chris."

"Karen, I'm telling you the truth." Chris says.

"Well, it'll take a lot more than your word to convince me." Karen says, and she storms off.

Frank sits at the bar at Jake's, drinking a beer and sulking. "Hi handsome -- you want to dance?" a blonde girl asks, sitting down next to him.

"No thanks." Frank says, not even looking at her.

"Okay -- how about you buy me a drink then?" the girl asks. Frank turns and looks at her.

"Are you always this pushy?" Frank asks.

"Only when the guy is as cute as you are. Hey -- the only reason a guy that looks like you would be sitting in a dive like this alone on Valentine's Day is if his girlfriend is an idiot who doesn't know a good thing when she sees one."

"What makes you think I have a girlfriend?" Frank asks.

"Oh, come on, a guy as hot as you -- you probably have to beat the women off with a stick." the girl teases.

"Is that a request?" Frank jokes. The girl laughs.

"So -- what did she do?" the girl asks.

"Who?"

"Your girlfriend."

"Oh --- her. She was supposed to meet me for dinner. And instead, she ends up 'forgetting', and showing up with the biggest piece of human trash living in this town. So I walked out." Frank says.

"Well -- her loss." the girl says.

"Will you -- excuse me a minute." Frank says, and he gets up and walks away from the bar. He comes back a few minutes later. "Hey Jake -- what happened to that girl that was just sitting here?" Frank asks.

"You mean the blonde? She took off." Jake tells him.

"Ah well -- women are nothing but trouble anyway." Frank says, and he starts to reach into his pocket.

"Something wrong?" Jake asks.

"My wallet -- it's gone! I think that woman stole my wallet!" Frank shouts.

"I already told you, I'm taking care of it. Look -- I want this just as badly as you do, okay? But if you're gonna get bossy with me, you can just do it by yourself. Hey, don't worry -- Chris Ramsey will be ruined by the time you and I get through with him." the girl says -- it's the same girl who was talking to Frank in the bar.

"He better be -- because I don't like losing." Nicole says on the other end of the phone.
