Home

Chris's apartment is pitch black. He has pulled every curtain closed and turned out every light. He sits on the floor in his room his head resting on the bed as tears stream down his face. His CD player playing Patsy Clines Crazy over and over again. Chris's eyes are shut tight as a million memories of Julie rush over him. He can almost hear her voice and touch her face. Between the music and his own memories he dose not hear the pounding at his door. Karen is standing out side his penthouse. She is worriedly knocking each time a little harder. She can hear the music playing inside. She remembers Julie telling her at one of her Ferncliff visits that that was their song.
      Karen: Oh Chris.
Karen remembering her less proud days takes out a pin and expertly picks the lock. Once inside she looks around everything is completely dark.
Karen: Chris?! Chris it's Karen! Chris where are you?!
No response Karen's heart is now pounding even harder she fallows the sound of the music to Chris's room. She nocks on the door hard
Karen: Chris it's Karen open the door!
Karen tries the door but it's locked.
Karen: Please Chris unlock the door!
      There is still no response
Karen again picks the lock and opens the door, and flips on a light. She sees Chris sitting on the floor his knees pulled up to his chest with his arms wrapped around them his head tilted back as tears rush down his face his eyes closed tightly. Around him is a tune of pictures of Julie and him and Julie.
      Karen: Chris!
Karen quickly shuts off the CD player. The sudden stop in the song finally brings Chris back into reality. His head snaps forward and his eyes open. He looks at her startled but doesn't move. Karen goes to him and sits down beside him.
Karen: Chris what are you doing?
Karen full of concern places her hand on his arm
      Chris: That was our song
Karen: I know she told me. It's a pretty song I can see why the two of you liked it.
Chris: Did you know it wasn't real at first
Karen smiled knowingly at Chris's admission
Karen: I kind of guessed that.
Chris: Yeah it was exactly the way everyone thought it was. I was going to get her money and she'd get her freedom. It was a good deal but
Chris trails off Karen looks at him understandingly
Karen: But along the way you fell in love with her.
Chris: Yeah we didn't realize what was happening at first but then all of a sudden there it was we were in love. We had found our perfect soul mate.
Karen: They say love happens when you're not looking.
Chris: Yeah it sure did with us.
Chris fingers a couple of the pictures gently.
Karen: So what are you doing?
Chris looks around and sighs sadly
Chris: I don't know I guess I was just trying to be as close to her as I could. I put on our favorite song surrounded myself with her pictures and drowned myself with her memories.
      Karen: Did it work?
Chris thinks as more tears come down his face
Chris: No not really. But it was nice to be lost for awhile. Karen when you loose someone you love dose it ever stop hurting?
      Karen thinks
Karen: It gets numb it never goes completely away but it gets very numb. You move on you live your life. You laugh and work and play you just go on.
Chris shakes his head in disbelief
Chris: I don't see how anyone can. I can early bring myself to leave the house.
Karen takes his hand and holds it in hers
Karen: It won't always be like this Chris. All you have to do is put one foot in front of the other.
Chris: But why should I? I mean what reason do I have to go on?
Karen looks at Chris her heart aches for him and she thinks about what she wouldn't give to have a man who would love her the way Chris loves Julie.
Karen: You have your carrier, you have your friends and you have your future that could be very bright. Who knows what might be around the corner
      Chris snorts
Chris: Yeah I have my carrier whoopie for me! I always thought that was so important now I don't know. As for friends well I don't exactly have a lot of those and a future with out Julie doesn't seem like much of a future to me
Karen: Chris you're a great doctor. And while that might not be the most important thing that is very important. You are a healer and that makes you important. As for friends well you've got me and I'm not going anywhere. (Karen squeezes his hand firmly).
Chris looks at Karen some what surprised.
Chris: When did we become friends?
      Karen smiles gently
Karen: A few days ago. Chris we both lost someone important to us, but we have to keep going. If you won't do it for yourself then do it for Julie.
      Chris: For Julie?
Karen: She loved you Chris she wouldn't want to see you like this. She'd want you to move forward. She'd want you to move on with your life not sit here crying over her. Let me put it to you this way if you had died what would you want her to do?
Chris: I'd want her to be happy I'd want her to move on and find some happiness for herself
Karen: Well don't you think she'd want the same thing for you?
      Chris ponders this
Chris: I guess so. What made you come over here anyways?
Karen reaches in her purse and pulls out the resignation letter and shows it to him.
Karen: I knew when I read this that you were in a bad way. Chris you are a great doctor and a great asset to GH. So I'm not excepting this resignation
      Chris: Karen
      Karen rips up the letter
Karen: No Chris you are a great doctor and you can't just throw your carrier away. Now you can have as much time off as you need but you're not going to quite and that's it.
Chris: Karen I just don't think I can go back there. How can I ever go into the ER again when that's where
      Chris gets chocked up
Karen: Chris I'm not saying it's going to be easy but you can't just stop your life. The first time will be hard but the more you go into the ER and every other place that holds a memory the easier it will get. Look I'm not saying you have to go back today or even next week, but we need you to come back.
Chris: I just can't imagine going in there or walking down the halls or into the on call room. I just don't see how I can do it. Julie is everywhere
Karen: Is she less here then at the hospital?
Chris: No but she died there
      Chris starts crying again
Karen: She also saved lives there, made friends there and was with you there. Hey you remember during the strike the two of you were practically joined at the hip.
      Chris smiles fondly
Chris: I remember this one day we were so worn out and wanted to be together so badly. We must have tried a hundred different places finally we ended up in the shower.
Karen: Well that's a nice memory
      Chris nods
Karen: you know in time those memories will become pleasant and you'll enjoy them.
      Chris: I hope so
Karen: So you'll come back to GH?
      Chris thinks
Chris: Yeah I guess but not for a couple more days I'm just not ready
Karen: That's fine Chris all I want to know is that you're coming back
Chris: Yeah I'll be back I guess. I just don't know how I'm going to get through being back
      Karen squeezes his hand
Karen: One step at a time.
      Chris: Can you stay awhile?
      Karen looks at her watch
Karen: Yeah sure the hospital can page me if they need me
      Chris smiles apri****ivly
      Chris: Thanks
Karen: You're welcome. So have you eaten?
Chris: Not since last night I had a few crackers and went to bed
Karen: Chris you can't do that! You have to eat you have to take care of yourself?
      Chris shrugs
      Chris: I just wasn't hungry.
Karen: How about if I make you something okay?
      Chris: Okay I guess
Karen: alright you go take a shower and put on some clean clothes and I'll make you some breakfast.
Chris: You don't have to do that
      Karen: I want to
Karen gets up and goes to the kitchen as Chris drags himself to the shower.
Eve tosses and turns violently in bed as she dreams. She is sitting in a huge courtroom that is packed with people. She notices they are all staring right at her. Then she notices that Chris is sitting on the witness stand. He looks at her with pure hate and points a finger at her his voice comes booming out like it's being amplified a thousand times over she wants to cover her ears but she can't.
Chris: SHE DID IT! SHE KILLED ME WIFE!! SHE LET JULIE DIE!! SHE DIDN'T DO ENOUGH!!
      Eve jumps to her feet
Eve: CHRIS I DID ALL I COULD FOR HER!!
No one seems to hear her. Suddenly she is standing on a platform in the middle of a huge building thousands of people are pointing at her and screaming.
Voices: YOU KILLED HER!! YOU BETRAYED YOUR MEDICAL OATH!! YOU LET HER DIE!!
Eve tries to protest against the thousands of angry voices and pointing fingers but she can't speak she looks down at her hands and they are covered in blood. She screams in horror. Eve wakes up in a cold sweet crying and shaking.
      Eve: I did do everything I could didn't I?
Just then the phone rings Eve jumps some what startled then collecting herself she picks it up.
      Eve: Hello?
      Scott: Hi Eve it's Scott.
Eve feels a sudden burst of happiness at hearing Scott's voice
      Eve: Hey Scott what's up?
Scott: Well I just wanted to call and say hi, and tell you that I've heard through the lawyer grape vine that Chris's case against you is going no where they have no case so there isn't going to be any kind of suit.
Eve: Oh that's great news Scott thanks
Scott emcees that something isn't quite right
      Scott: Eve is everything okay?
Eve: Oh yeah it's fine I'm just a little sleepy I guess. I haven't been sleeping to good the past few nights.
Scott: Is something bothering you? You want to talk about it?
      Eve thinks
Eve: Maybe later Scott right now I'm late for work I'd better get going. Thanks for calling and I'll talk to you later okay.
Scott: Okay but if you need anything please call me okay
      Eve: thanks I will
They hang up Eve pulls herself out of bed. Scott stairs at the phone and dials a number
Heather: Flowers From The Heart Heather speaking how may I: help you?
Scott: Yes I'd like to order two dozen long stem red roses for a Doctor Eve Lambert at General Hospital.

Karen pulls up at the hospital and takes a deep breath. She is already exhausted from caring for Chris and she still has a full shift to do. She walks into the hospital and gets on the elevator not thinking of anything in particular. When she gets off on the sixth floor Traci comes running up to her in a panic.
Traci: Karen where have you been! I've been paging you like crazy!
      Karen looks confused and surprised.
Karen: Why what's going on? Are you sure my pager never went off?
Traci: Right after you left 18 people from a five alarm fire were brought in. All residents and interns were paged to the ER. Boardman told me to track you down but I couldn't find you.
Karen is in shock, her mouth is wide open
Karen: Oh My God! How could this have happened! I had my pager with me the whole time!
Karen pulls her pager out and shows Traci. Just then Boardman comes up.
Boardman: So nice of you to decide to join us Doctor I hope we aren't keeping you from anything.
He gives her a dirty look.
      Karen takes a deep breath
Karen: Dr. Boardman I'm so sorry something must be wrong with my pager. Had I gotten the page I would have come right away.
Boardman: Save it Wexler I've had enough of your pitiful excuses! I'll be adding this to my growing report on you.
Boardman storms of Traci places a reassuring hand on Karen's arm.
Traci: Don't worry Alan will understand. It wasn't your fault the pager just didn't work. Alan knows you're a good doctor.
      Karen sighs.
Karen: Oh what a day. Thanks Traci I know he'll understand but I hate the way this makes me look. I don't know what could be wrong with it it was working just fine this morning.
Traci: Maybe the batteries are low?
Karen: I just put new ones in yesterday.
Karen opens the battery slot on her pager and gasps.
      Traci: What's wrong?
Karen: Oh My God the batteries are gone
Karen shows the empty compartment to Traci. Traci: But how can they be gone?
Karen: I don't know I just put them in yesterday.
Just then Joe walks by whistling with a smug look on his face.
Traci: I think I might have a theory on this.
Traci nods her head towards Joe.
Karen clenches her jaw as she feels her blood start to boil.
      Karen: That jerk!
Just then another nurse who is close to Traci comes up.
Gracie: Hi I don't me to interrupt but I promised Traci if Jill told me anything that Joe was up to I'd tell one of you.
Traci: Hi Gracie no problem what's up?
Karen: Do you know anything about my pager?
Gracie: I saw Joe go into your office earlier today. I thought that was odd especially since you weren't there. So I buddied up to Jill and found out that Joe had Jill distract you this morning so he could go into your office and take the batteries out of your pager.
Traci: That dirty rotten slime ball! He's not just hurting Karen he's endangering patients!
Karen shakes her head in disgust
Karen: I can't believe I ever cared about that retched snake. He's out to ruin me!
Karen starts to cry Traci hugs her
Traci: Well he isn't going to win
Gracie: The nurses are behind you Karen and as we proved last spring we are very powerful.
      Karen smiles appreciatively.
Karen: Thank you, well I'd better get down to the ER and see what I can do.
Traci: I'll come with you there are still quite a few people down there.
Gracie: I'll get back to ICU now let me know if you need anything.
Traci: Thanks Gracie you've already helped a lot
Karen: Yes thank you Gracie you are a good friend
      Gracie smiles
      Gracie: Anytime
The three some head off to work.

Mary is busily working in the ER. She suddenly becomes dizzy and grabs on to a gurney for support. Gabriella comes over to her to check on her.
Gabriella: Mary are you alright you look a little pale
      Mary smiles gently at Gabriella
Mary: I'm fine just fighting a little flue bug or something nothing for you to worry about.
Gabriella: Well why don't you take a little break.
Mary: Now there is no need for that. I'm perfectly capable of doing my job. Now if you'll excuse me these medicines need to be given to several patients on the ICU floor.
Mary picks up the tray and starts out of the room. Gabriella turns back to her work and suddenly hears a crash. She runs into the hall and gasps. There on the floor is Mary passed out cold. Gabriella calls for help and begins checking Mary's vitals

      Chapter 12
Mary is rushed into an exam room with Gabriella, Ian, and several other nurses at her side. Karen comes running in with Traci at her heals.
Ian: Get her hooked up to the heart monitor! What are her vitals!
Karen: Order a CT and a full blood panel!
Traci: Respirations, and heart rate are normal blood pressure is elevated!
Karen: Dose anyone know if she's been having any other symptoms?
Ian: Give her 5 milligrams of tenormin stat.
Gabriella: She was a little dizzy right before she passed out. Pupils are even doctor.
Karen: Damit she had a stroke once before that maybe what this is. Order an MRI I want a full neurological work up stat.
Audrey: She's also been very tired lately and been experiencing nausea in the morning.
Ian and Karen exchange a glance at this latest information.
      Ian: How old is she?
      Audrey: 54
Traci: Doctor she's starting to come around.
Mary tries to get up but Ian and Karen gently restrain her.
Ian: Mrs. Collins you had a fainting spell you're in the ER please try and relax.
Mary: Oh this is silly I'm fine I just must not have had enough to eat this morning or something.
Ian: Ms. Collins your blood pressure is elevated and given your other symptoms we need to run some tests.
Karen: Mary you need to relax take some deep breaths through the Oxygen mask. Everything is going to be okay.
Mary: There really is no need for all this fuss.
Audrey takes her hand as the others continue to work on her.
Audrey: Now Mary if any patient was brought in here after fainting you know very well they'd have to be checked out and you're no different. So just relax okay.
Mary takes a deep breath and lays back.
Mary: Well I suppose a small break would be okay.
      Ian motions Karen aside.
Karen: Do you think it's another stroke?
Ian: I'm not ruling it out but I've got a feeling we are looking at a different culprit.
Tell me Karen do you know if she's gone through menopause yet?
Karen looks at Ian shocked as what he is suggesting sinks in.
Karen: I don't know I assumed she had but maybe not.
Ian: Well if she hasn't her symptoms could be attributed to something else.
      Just then Audrey comes over.
Audrey: I'm sorry to interrupt but her sons and Victor need to be called and if you don't mind since I have known the family since Frank was born I'd like to be the one to make the calls.
Karen: Audrey I think that would be fine please let them know everything is under control.
      Audrey: Of course
Audrey starts to leave but Ian stops her
Ian: Audrey you are obviously very close to Mary so maybe you can answer this question for us. It may sound crazy but we need all the information in order to make a proper diagnosis.
Audrey: Well of course doctor what is it?
Ian: Has Mary gone through menopause yet?
      Audrey considers this question
Audrey: No she hasn't. Infact this morning when she was telling me how tired and nauseas, and scattered she had been I couldn't help but wonder. I mean it's been many years but I remember how Mary was when she was expecting Frank and Joe.
Karen and Ian exchange a look.
      Karen: Thank you Audrey
Audrey smiles and goes off to call Frank, Joe, and Victor.
Traci comes out with the blood samples that are being taken to the lab for screening.
Karen: Traci included in that blood panel have the lab run a pregnancy test.
      Traci is clearly surprised.
      Traci: Oh okay.
      Traci hurries off.
Karen: I want to still run the CT and MRI it could be other things.
Ian: Absolutely and given her age it's a long shot. But a good doctor must always be thorough.
Karen: Agreed we need all the facts to make a diagnosis.
Karen and Ian go back into Mary's cubical.
Ian: Mrs. Collins we are going to have you moved up to radiology for a CT and MRI.
Mary: Oh that's really not necessary. I'm fine really.
Karen: And we want to make sure you are fine.
Just then the orderlies show up to take Mary for her CT and MRI.
Ian: Gabriella could you please accompany Mrs. Collins
      Gabriella: Yes doctor.
Mary is wheeled out of the room.
Frank and Courtney are curled up under the covers after a blissful morning of love making.
Frank: Now this is what I call a day off.
They laugh, Courtney reaches up and strokes Franks face.
Courtney: It is quite nice isn't it. Of course you know if I become pregnant once the baby comes we're going to have a lot less time.
      Frank pulls Courtney near
Frank: All the more reason to make the most of our time now.
They kiss passionately as they caress one another's bodies. Just then the phone rings.
      Courtney: Ignore it
Frank: Oh I wish I could but it could be important.
Courtney moans Frank reaches over and grabs the phone.
      Frank: Hello.
      Audrey: Frank it's Audrey
Frank: Hi Audrey how are you? What's going on?
Audrey: I'm fine thank you. The reason I'm calling is that you need to get down to the ER just as soon as you can.
Frank sits up on red alert Courtney senses something isn't right
Frank: What's wrong? Is Neil okay? Did he get hurt at camp?
Audrey: No no Neil is fine it's your Mom. She is okay now but she had a fainting spell and her blood pressure is a little high so they are running some tests.
Frank feels his heart jump into his throat
      Frank: Is it another stroke?
Courtney seeing the concern and upset look on Franks face puts a comforting hand on his arm.
Audrey: We are not sure yet. However she is wide awake and completely coherent. There doesn't seem to be any signs of brain damage so if she did it was an extremely mild one. But you should come down.
      Frank: We'll be right there.
Frank hangs up and jumps out of bed quickly getting dressed. Courtney dresses quickly to as Frank relays the information.
They are soon in the car speeding along.
Frank: Damnit! Why can't these cares go faster!
Courtney: We'll get there soon Frank.
Frank: Not soon enough. Courtney what if something is seriously wrong with her? What if what if she
Frank gets all choked up and can't finish the sentence.
Courtney: Frank what ever it is from what Audrey says it sounds minor. Besides your mom is very strong and she's a fighter.
Frank: I can't loose her Court. I just can't. I don't want to be an orphan.
      Frank shakes his head.
Frank: I'm 32 years old and if she dies I'm still going to feel like an orphan. I still need her you know.
Courtney: I don't think we ever stop needing our parents. When mine died I might as well have been 4 years old. I felt so lost and abandoned. But Frank we have no reason to think she is going to die. From what Audrey said it's rather minor.
Frank: A nose bleed sounds pretty minor to but if Neil got one it wouldn't be.
Courtney: Frank that's because we have a reason to worry about nose bleeds we don't have a reason to worry about a fainting spell. Lets not worry until we have a reason to be scared okay.
      Frank nods
Frank: I don't know what I'd do if I lost her.
Courtney takes Franks hand and squeezes it.

Lucy and Kevin are in the car on the way to GH after getting Victor's frantic call.
Lucy: Well what did Victor say exactly? What is wrong with Mary?
Kevin: He doesn't know. All he knows is that she hasn't been feeling very well and that she fainted today.
Lucy: Oh poor Mary I hope she's okay.
      Kevin: Me to.
Kevin looks out the window a million miles away. Lucy senses something is wrong.
      Lucy: Doc what is it?
Kevin: You know it's weird for so long I felt I had no mother. Then Victor and Mary got married. And all of the sudden I had this wonderful mother that I new I could turn to at anytime. I know she's not mine by birth but Lucy she is by heart.
A tear runs down his face
Kevin: And I'm just not ready to loose her.
Lucy rests her hand on Kevin's arm.
Lucy: Oh doc I'm sure you won't. GH is filled with great doctors I'm sure they can help her. Besides it might not be anything serious.
Kevin: Well if it is I will go to the ends of the earth to find a doctor who can help her. I'm not loosing my mom.
Lucy looks at Kevin with concern as they drive on.

Victor comes charging off the elevator Eve and Karen are both at the nurses station. He goes running over to him.
Victor: WHERE IS SHE WHERE IS MARY!! OH MY GOD WHAT'S HAPPENED TO HER WHAT'S WRONG WITH HER!
Victor is nearly hysterical as tears stream down his face. Eve and Karen go to him.
Karen: Victor why don't we go sit down on the couch.
Victor: No no I'm not going to sit down! I don't want to sit down! That means it's bad Oh God that means it's bad!!
Eve: No Victor no she's okay she's okay we just want you to calm down.
Karen: Victor she's okay she's undergoing some tests right now to see why she fainted.
Victor: She's okay then you aren't just telling me that.
Eve: No Victor she really is okay. She is wide awake and aside from her blood pressure being slightly elevated she's just fine.
Victor: She had a stroke you've got to get her pressure down!
Karen: We are we gave her some medicine and it seems to be working.
Eve: Victor we don't think it was a stroke if it was it was extremely small.
Victor: She hasn't been feeling well for awhile. Damit I new I should have made her come in for an exam when she started to not feel well!
Karen: Victor it's not your fault. You know how stubborn she can be you wouldn't have been able to make her come in sooner. Besides this may be nothing.
Eve: Victor everything is under control why don't you come sit down over here.
Karen: I'm sure the rest of your family will be here soon.
Victor: I want to see Mary.
Eve: You can't just yet she's undergoing tests right now. But as soon as we get them done and she's situated in a room for observation then you can okay.
Victor: How long will she be in the hospital?
Karen: Well that depends on what we find out.
Eve: Victor we really don't have any answers yet but as soon as we do we will tell you.
      Victor: Thank you.
      Victor still looks very worried
Victor: You aren't hiding anything from me right?
Karen: No Victor we would never do that.
Victor nods somewhat reassured. Audrey comes up to the group.
      Audrey: Hello Victor
Victor: Is there any word on Mary? What's going on?
Audrey: No there is no news yet she is still undergoing tests.
      Victor: Who is with her?
      Audrey: Dr. Thornheart and Gabriella.
      Victor nods.
Victor: I'm glad people we both know are with her.
Eve: Victor I have to go check on some patients but I'll come by in a bit and see how things are going okay?
Karen: Victor I have to go to but as soon as we know anything I'll let you know okay.
      Victor: Thank you.
Audrey: Victor how about if I wait with you till your family arrives.
Victor: Thank you Audrey you're a good friend.
They sit on the couch Audrey holds a very worried Victor's hand.
As Karen and Eve walk away they talk quietly.
Eve: When our the rest getting here? Where is Joe? Isn't he on duty?
Karen: Frank and Courtney are on there way, Audrey told me that Victor was going to call Kevin and Lucy, as for Joe I have no idea. He got off duty about the same time Mary collapsed and no one has been able to track him down.
      Eve shakes his head.
Eve: Figures Joe hasn't really been where he's needed in quite sometime.
      Karen nods in agreement.

Joe and Jill are in the park having a picnic.
Joe: You should have seen the look on Karen's face when she saw there were no batteries in her pager! It was priceless. And Boardman! Man I love that guy he came down on her BAMB just like that!
Joe slams his fist into his hand beaming proudly. Jill gazes at him lovingly.
Jill: I am sure it was grand I wish I could have seen it. It won't be long now will it.
Joe: Well it will be a little longer. I mean they can't fire her for this but it won't look good added together with everything else that's about to happen.
Joe grins devilishly. Jill giggles with delight
Jill: So what is our next move.
Joe: Well nothing for a couple days remember what I said it can't happen all at once.
      Jill nods in agreement.
Joe: But soon I think a patient may get to much medicine
      Joe laughs
Jill: Oh no however could that happen.
They both crack up and then kiss gently.
Joe: Ahh hell this damm pager keeps going off! I am not on duty till tomorrow what is wrong with this stupid thing!
Joe looks at it angrily as it continues to beep.
      Jill: Who is paging you?
      Joe: The hospital.
Jill: I guess that's the price you pay for being a great doctor.
      Joe smiles.
Joe: I guess I should call in.
Joe gets his cell phone and call the hospital.
Betsy: 6th floor nurses station Betsy speaking
Joe: Hey Betsy it's Dr. Scanlon listen someone has been paging me, what's going on?
Betsy: Oh Dr. Scanlon thank goodness you called back. It's your mother she fainted earlier. They don't know what's wrong but they're running a bunch of tests to find out.
Joe: What! Okay I'll be right there!
Joe hangs up and jumps up off the ground. Jill alarmed stands up
      Jill: Joe what's going on?
Joe: Something is wrong with my mom she fainted. They are running a bunch of tests I have to get over there.
      Jill: I'll come with you.
Joe: No go home I'll call you later.
Joe runs off leaving Jill standing alone in the park with the half eaten picnic. Jill sighs
      Jill: Well he knows best.
Jill picks up the picnic and heads home.

Victor and Audrey sit in the waiting area awaiting news on Mary.
Victor: Her birthday is next month you know, I'd planned a big surprise for her.
      Audrey smiles at Victor
Audrey: Well I'm sure any surprise you planned she'd love.
      Victor smiles
Victor: I'd like to think so. I am going to take her to Ireland for two whole weeks.
Audrey: Well now that gift sounds just perfect for her. I'm sure she'll love it.
A worried look passes over Victors face
Victor: But Audrey what if she is to sick I don't know what I'll do if anything happens to her.
      Victor shakes his head sadly.
Victor: I she is everything to me Audrey. There is no me with out her.
Audrey: Now Victor really you are getting much to far ahead of yourself. We have no reason to think Mary isn't going to be anything but just fine. She's just having some tests run that's all. She's going to be just fine I know it.
      Victor: I pray you're right.
Audrey: How about if I go check to see how things are coming with those results
      Victor: Could you Audrey?
      Audrey smiles supportively
      Audrey: Of course I will
Audrey hurries off. Just then Kevin, Lucy, Frank, and Courtney come racing off the elevator. and come rushing over to Victor.
Kevin: Victor what's going on? How is she?
Lucy: Have you seen her is she awake?
Frank: Victor do they know why she fainted?
Courtney: What have they told you.
      Just then Joe races up.
Joe: What the hell is going on? Where is she? Victor did you get her involved in something?
      Joe looks accusingly at Victor.
Kevin: My father would never endanger his wife unlike your father did!
      Joe: Watch it Collins!
Frank: ENOUGH! Joe we just got here none of us have answers yet we were just finding out from Victor. Now you know that Victor loves Mom very much he'd never endanger her that remark was totally uncalled for. Kevin I understand you being protective of your father but
Kevin: But insulting your father isn't the answer and won't help matters I know I'm sorry. It was a reflex reaction
Frank: It's okay that happens it just proves you belong in this family.
This remark causes a few chuckles.
      Kevin: Thanks
Joe: So what is going on!
Victor: She's undergoing some tests right now. I'm not sure what kind. She is according to the nurses and doctors wide awake and completely coherent. I haven't been allowed to see her yet because they are doing tests. So far they don't know why she fainted Audrey just went to check on the test results. I don't know what is wrong all I know is she hasn't been feeling all that well and she fainted today.
      Victor hangs his head sadly
Victor: I don't know what I'll do if
Victor gets chocked up Lucy goes and hugs him
Lucy: Hey you don't even think like that Mary is a fighter. She's tough what ever this is I'm sure she'll pull through
Victor smiles appreciatively at his almost daughter.
      Victor: I hope you're right.
Joe: What do you mean she hasn't been feeling well?! What the hell is wrong with her?!
Courtney: Joe could you please keep your voice down we are in a hospital!
Joe: Why should I! And who the hell are you to be telling me what to do you little good for nothing tramp!
Courtney slaps Joe across the face.
Frank: Stop it both of you! Joe can you please keep your temper in check long enough for us to find out why are mother fainted! Courtney did not deserve that
Joe: Like hell she didn't! And you have no right to correct me!
Kevin: Joe what is your problem!
Joe: My problem is that this is my day off and because my mom won't act her age I'm stuck waiting in a hospital with a bunch of people who I for the most part don't like to find out why my mother isn't feeling well!
Lucy: What do you mean act her age? Age is a state of mind
Joe: Hey Lucy don't you have a crystal ball to go stair at. Butt out this doesn't concern you!
      Everyone gasps
Frank: Joe I think you should leave now.
Joe: Fine! page me when you know why she's fainting.
      Joe storms off.
Frank: Kevin Lucy I'm very sorry about that. I don't know what has gotten into my brother lately.
Kevin: Frank it's okay you don't have to apologies for him. You aren't your brothers keeper.
Lucy: Yeah and besides he's probably just stressed out.
Frank: Well I certainly feel like his keeper sometimes. Lucy that might be it and for the record I agree. Age is a state of mind.
Victor: Well what ever is bothering Joe I hope he calms down. I don't want him upsetting Mary.
Frank: I'm sure he'll be fine.
Just then Audrey comes up to the group.
Audrey: Oh good I'm glad you are all here. But where is Joe?
Audrey looks puzzled everyone looks at each other.
Frank: He had something to take care of he'll be back. Any word on my mom?
Kevin: Have they gotten the test results back yet?
Victor: Can we please see her?
Audrey: Well I hope he doesn't go to far. yes as a matter of fact there is. The tests are all done. They don't have the results back yet but they will soon. You can all go see her now she is in room 345.
      Victor: Thank you Audrey
Audrey: You're welcome but try and keep her calm okay. Her blood pressure was a little high. So no excitement.
They all nod and head of to Mary's room.

Karen and Ian meet up at the nurses station
      Karen: You paged me?
Ian: I just got the results back on Mary Collins
Karen: Great, I know her family is anxious to know what is wrong with her.
Ian hands Karen the results. As Karen reads her eyes get as wide as saucers
Ian: It's quite fascinating really a woman of her age and all. She won't be the oldest women in history but she'll be up there.
Karen: Wow I never would have guessed this. I figured her child bearing days were far behind her. This won't be easy on her. Pregnancy and delivery is hard enough but the stress of an infant and small child
      Karen shakes her head
Karen: Medically speaking she's in for some very hard times. We'll need to emphasize all of her options
Ian: Come now a birth of a child is a wonderful thing. We don't need to make it all sound gloom and doom. With all the medical no how and technology they both could be just fine
Karen: We can't fix everything and given her age they are both already in some danger.
Ian: Well lets not scare her more then we have to.
Karen: Agreed but we need to be realistic with her.
      Ian nods in agreement.
Ian: Yes the patient must come first.
Karen: Okay lets go over the rest of these results so we can give a full medical picture of the situation and then we'll go fill her in
      Ian: Sounds good
They continue looking at the test results

The group is about to enter Mary's room.
Kevin: You know considering her blood pressure was high and she doesn't need any excitement perhaps we shouldn't all go in at once.
Victor: I would like to talk to her alone at some point.
      He looks at Frank
      Victor: If that's okay
Frank smiles and shakes his head
Frank: Victor you're her husband of course that's okay. Look I know we all haven't always gotten along but we are a family. Now I think Victor should go in first it's only right.
Victor smiles and enters Mary's room. She is resting in bed looking at a magazine Gabriella brought her. Victor rushes over to her and hugs her tightly
Victor: Mary oh my sweet Mary I was so worried about you. I love you so much I don't know what I'd do if anything ever happened to you.
He lays her back gently on the bed griping her hand and stroking her face. Mary reaches up and gently brushes there tears from his face.
Mary: Victor it's okay I'm fine. I have no plans to leave you anytime soon. I'm really fine they are just making a big fuss about nothing.
      Victor: But you fainted
Mary: It's not that uncommon for people in high stress jobs who work as hard as I do to faint. Now don't you get any ideas I'm hanging onto you for the long hall.
      Victor smiles at her lovingly
      Victor: Is that a promise
      Mary nods
      Mary: It's a promise.
      At this they kiss.
Mary: So where is the rest of the brood.
Victor: Outside Kevin thought it would be better if we didn't all rush in at once.
      Mary smiles
Mary: Such a cautious son we have. Well I'm fine so you can tell them to come on in.
Victor nods and goes to the door he peaks out and looks around for Frank.
      Victor: Where did Frank go?
Courtney: Oh he'll be right back he just wanted to Call Nate's Mom and see if Neil could go to his house after camp today so we can stay here.
      Victor: Oh okay.
Lucy looks at Kevin who is looking worried and out of place.
Lucy: Hey Doc why don't you go in.
Victor: Oh yes Mary would love to see you.
      Kevin: Uhm well okay.
Kevin goes in Mary sees him and smiles brightly
Mary: Well if it isn't my favorite step son come over here
Mary holds her arms open to him and Kevin goes and hugs her.
Kevin: Well it's good to see you in such a good mood, So how are you feeling?
Mary: I'm fine really. I'm tired of all this fuss and would much rather get back to work.
Kevin: Well I think you're entitled to have a fuss made about you. So just sit back and enjoy it.
Mary senses something is on Kevin's mind
Mary: Kevin is everything okay? You seem preoccupied. Is Lucy okay? How is Christina?
Kevin: Lucy is just fine we have even set a wedding date. And Christina is doing great Aunt Charlene is watching her.
Mary: That's wonderful Kevin! You and Lucy belong together. So when is the big day?
Kevin: Thanks we are excited. It's going to be January first
Mary: What a great day for a wedding. But something is bothering you I can tell, what is it Kevin?
Kevin takes a deep breath and shakes his head
Kevin: There isn't any hiding things from you is there?
Mary: No there isn't so tell me what is wrong.
Kevin gets up and paces a little.
Kevin: You know I never really considered myself to have a mother. I mean the woman who gave me life was crazy and abusive. She had no love in her. I never thought I missed it or even wanted it I just forgot or tried to forget about it. But then my Dad met you and I saw how great you are to Frank and Joe and I felt this warmth coming towards me that I had never felt before. Then you and my father married and suddenly I had a step mom and I felt this I don't know this missing link found. Then today you got sick and I guess I got scared. I mean I just got you
Mary is looking at Kevin with tears in her eyes she holds her arms open wide Kevin comes and sits back down beside her and Mary hugs him tightly.
Mary: When I think of my children I know I don't have two I have three.
She pulls back and looks Kevin right in the eye
Mary: You have been my son in my heart since the day your father asked me to be his wife. You're as much mine as Frank and Joe are. I love you Kevin if I haven't been as attentive it's only because as a step mom I wasn't sure if my role should be the same. But I assure you Kevin in my heart you're as much my son as Frank and Joe. And I'm not about to leave any of you for a very very long time.
Kevin smiles at Mary with tears in his eyes
      Kevin: I love you Mom
Mary: I love you to sweet heart
They hug. Just then Frank knocks on the door.
      Frank: Can I come in
      Mary: Well you'd better
They laugh Frank comes in and hugs Mary
Frank: You know you have given all of us quite a scare. How do you feel?
Mary: Well there is no reason for you to be scared I'm fine.
      Frank: Well you better be.
Just then Joe fallowed bye Courtney, Lucy, and Victor come in he comes over and hugs Mary.
      Mary: Hello sweet heart.
Joe: So how are you? How do you feel?
      He looks at the others
Joe: Have the results come back yet?
      Kevin: Not yet
Mary: Well I can tell you I'm just fine.
Courtney: Well you'd better be because Frank and I are trying to have another child and this baby needs it's grandma
Frank and Courtney beam at each other.
      Kevin: That's wonderful congratulations
Lucy: Oh that really is. Courtney I have some herbs you can use if you like they promote fertility.
      Courtney smiles
      Courtney: Thank you.
Mary: Oh that is wonderful news you can bet I'll be around for that.
Victor: A new grandchild how splendid!
Joe: Yeah as long as it's not like either of it's parents
      Mary: Joseph!
Joe: Mom I'm sorry but I'm not going to pretend I like them.
Kevin: Well at least have some respect for Mom's feelings!
Joe: Since when do you call her mom!
Mary: Joseph he is as much my son as you are. I'm married to Victor and that makes Kevin my son. And your brother so treat him with some respect. I don't know what has gotten into you lately.
Frank: Cool! I always wanted a big brother.
      They all laugh.
      Kevin: Well here I am.
Just then there is a nock at the door and Karen and Ian come in
      Karen: Sorry to interrupt.
Frank: Hey Karen come on in, Hi Ian. OH the test results you have them don't you!
Victor: Is everything alright? What did you find?
Kevin: Nothing is seriously wrong is it?
Lucy: Please be straight with us what do you know
      Courtney: Is it something manageable?
Joe: Dose Karen have to be on the case.
Frank flings a magazine at Joe hitting him in the face.
Mary: So when can I get back to work and stop all this silly nonsense.
Karen: I think you can be back at work day after tomorrow. We do want you to take it easy though. We have all the information and have come to a diagnosis.
Ian: It really isn't bad news and it is manageable.
Karen: It's surprising more then anything.
Everyone looks at each other confused
      Victor: Well what is it?
      Karen: Mary you're pregnant congratulations.

Eve is busy at the nurses station when a delivery man shows up.
Delivery man: I'm looking for a Doctor Eve Lambert
Eve: I'm Dr. Lambert how can I help you?
Delivery man: I have a delivery here for you. Sign here
Eve signs and the man hands her two dozen long stem red roses Eve gasps
Delivery man: have a nice day
He leaves Eve looks at the beautiful roses and lays them down on the desk she finds the card and opens it and begins to read
A rose by any other name would have to be Eve.
Meet me my sweet at the Port Charles Grill at 1pm
      Your secret admirer.
      Eve smiles her heart flutters
Eve: Oh Scott. I will see you then
She smiles happily and breaths in the roses.

The room is in a state of stunned silence as Karen's words sink in. Courtney starts to snicker
Courtney: Mary pregnant? Are you sure?
Lucy: Boy when you said surprising new you weren't kidding
Kevin: Is Mom healthy? Is the baby okay? Are you sure about this?
Frank: Wow a little baby sister or brother. This is just incredible. But isn't this dangerous for mom?
Victor: Just what I need another child to screw up
      Victor looks down hopelessly
Mary is staring at Karen blankly
      Mary: Pregnant I'm pregnant?
Joe: Oh would you guys get a grip! She's not pregnant! Karen is obviously high on something. She probably is reading someone else's test results.
Karen: Joe these are definitely her results! And for the ninety millionth time I am clean
Joe: Oh give it up Karen! You're a screw up!
Frank: STICK A SOCK IN IT JOE!
Ian: The test results are conclusive. We took some blood in the ER and ran the tests right away. Mary is about 5 weeks pregnant.
Mary strokes her stomach and looks up at victor with tears in her eyes and a still dazed look
Mary: We're going to have a baby
Joe: Oh God don't tell me you're actually going to try and have this kid!
Frank: Why shouldn't she? As long as she takes extra good care of herself it should be fine. And naturally I'll be around to help out
      Courtney: Oh absolutely
      Lucy: We all will
Kevin: It will unify are families once and for all but we do need to keep a close eye on you. this is a very high risk pregnancy.
Victor: I don't know if I'm up to this.
Joe: Have you all just lost your brains! She is way to old for this! It could kill her and this child is probably going to have a million and one problems! But hey if you want to kill yourself trying to have a kid that is going to be handicapped go for it! Just don't expect me to help!
Joe storms out. Mary is in tears
Mary: I can't give up my baby it goes against everything I believe
Victor: I just don't want to screw up another child's life.
      Victor starts crying.
      Frank takes Mary's hands
Frank: Mom, it's going to be okay. I'm sure with all the medical advances that you can carry the baby to term.
Karen: Oh absolutely it will be hard but with careful monitoring it's possible. And it's not a sure thing that the baby is going to be handicapped
Frank: And you know that what ever my little sister or brother needs I will do my best to get. I'll always be there for them no matter what.
Kevin: Same here what ever this kid needs I'm there. And victor
Kevin goes over and puts his arm around Victor who is looking hopeless.
Kevin: You are not the same man you were then and I'm sure you'll be a great Dad.
Frank: Absolutely besides from what I have heard none of it was your fault. You didn't know what your wife was doing, and you did the best you could when you found out in order to stop it.
Kevin: The choices Ryan made and the mistakes I made were a result of circumstance not of you.
Lucy: You know everything happens for a reason. This child must have a purpose in being born now. We should celebrate it.
      Courtney: I agree
      Victor half smiles
Mary: Victor we can do this can't we?
      Victor shakes his head sadly
Victor: I don't no Mary I just don't know. I want to but I don't want to be selfish. My record as a father is pretty awful and considering are age it seems rather unfair to the child. I just don't know. I I need some air
Victor leaves the room. Mary starts sobbing Frank and Kevin hug her tightly.
Karen and Ian quietly excuse themselves from the room.
Eve is in the on call room putting the final touches on her make up as she hums to herself. Karen comes in and plops down on the couch.
Karen: Well someone is certainly in a good mood.
      Eve jumps startled
Eve: Oh Karen hi I didn't hear you come in.
Karen: sorry I didn't mean to startle you.
Eve: Oh that's okay, yeah I am in a good mood.
      Karen: Care to share?
      Eve beams brightly
Eve: Well I have a lunch date with a truly wonderful man.
      Karen: Anyone I know?
      Eve: Scott
      Eve's eyes twinkle
Karen: Oh Eve that's great! I always hoped the two of you would get back together. You make such a cute couple. So when did all of this happen?
      Eve smiles
Eve: thanks Karen, you know up until a few days ago I didn't think we ever would but now.
      Eve just shakes her head
Karen: You know I thought I noticed a little something between you two at Julie's funeral.
Eve: It was so weird Karen. The night Julie died I got home and there was this message from Scott on the phone and suddenly I'm feeling things I never thought I'd feel for him again. We've been taking it slowly you know just talking and spending time together. Moving to fast could hurt one of us in the long run. But anyways this morning he sends me a bunch of roses and an invitation to meet him in the park for lunch.
Karen: Oh Eve that's so romantic. I'm happy for you, I hope I find a prince some day.
Eve: Oh Karen I'm sure you will. You're to great not to. You'll find someone I'm sure of it.
      Karen smiles
      Karen: Thanks.
      Eve: Any word on Mary?
Karen: As a matter of fact yes you'd better sit down for this one.
Eve gets a worried look on her face
      Eve: Oh no what's wrong?
Karen: Oh it's nothing like that just really surprising. Mary is pregnant.
Eve's eyes bug out and her jaw drops
Eve: You're kidding me! She's pregnant! Are you sure?
Karen: It shocked me to it shocked all of us for that matter. But yes she's about 5 weeks along. That's why she fainted. Right now her and the baby are doing fine but we're going to have to keep a close eye on her and keep her on blood pressure medication.
Eve: Is she happy about this? How is Victor taking this? How about the rest of the Collins Scanlon brood.
Karen: Well Mary is still a little shocked and scared. Victor is scared he'll screw up this kid. You know this is one of those areas that he doesn't have much self esteem in
      Eve nods
Eve: I know the night of his engagement party he freaked out nearly called it off because he was afraid he'd be a bad husband. The sad thing is that victor has grown and changed so much that he really doesn't need to worry about it. I think he'll be an excellent father.
Karen: Oh I agree the man who abandoned Ryan and wasn't there much for Kevin is long gone. Victor is an amazing husband and I'm sure he'll be a great father. As for the others aside from Joe they are excited, surprised and naturally worried about both Mary and the baby. I mean even if we can get Mary to carry to term the baby could easily have a lot of problems given Mary's age and there is the little fact that Victor and Mary might not be able to keep up with a small child. But they are mostly supportive.
      Eve looks confused
Eve: What do you mean aside from Joe?
Karen: I mean that he basically told Mary she's to old to do this and is a fool to try. He made it clear he wouldn't help in anyway then stormed out.
Eve: That's awful! Mary must have been so upset. What on earth has gotten into Joe lately
Karen: You know Eve I think I've come to realize that this is the real Joe. The Joe I knew growing up, and the one we new when the internship started was an act this is the real Joe. And he's someone I wish I'd never met.
      Eve shakes her head sadly
Eve: You think you know someone.
      Eve glances at her watch.
Eve: Oh I need to go.
Karen: Okay have a great time say hi to my Dad for me
      Eve: Will do
      Eve hurries out.

Jill is sitting on the couch reading a soap magazine.
Jill: Oh I can't believe Mitch and Christaph are going to turn out to be brothers on Emerald hospital! That should be good.
Just then there is a loud pounding at the door.
      Jill: Just a minute
Jill goes to the door she peaks through the peep whole and sees Joe. She flings open the door. Joe rushes in.
Jill: Joe! I didn't think I'd see you again today! How is your mom? Is everything okay?
Joe: You know I'm sick and tired of being the only one in my whole family with a brain! My family has got to be the dumbest, most irresponsible, most pathetic pack of screw ups and losers on the face of the earth. I must have been adopted because there is no way I could be related to them I'm far to on top of things to be one of them.
Joe shakes his head in disgust.
Jill goes to him and takes his hands in hers
      Jill: What happened?
Joe: She's pregnant! My mother had unprotected sex with her husband and got herself knocked up! She's so irresponsible!
Jill: What! She's pregnant? but how? isn't she to old?
Joe: That's what I said but she is. And the old fool wants to have it!
Jill: Well that's crazy her and the baby could die and odds are the child is going to have a tune of problems
Joe: That's what I said but that Bible belt nit wit wouldn't listen. I feel so bad for that kid!
Jill: Well maybe he'll be like you.
Joe: Well it doesn't really matter I'm not going to interrupt my life to help out because my mother and her wacko husband can't act their age.
Jill: You shouldn't have to. You are so tense come here let me relax you.
Jill pulls him in close and kisses him passionately, he kisses her right back. They hold onto each other tightly as they pull off one another's clothes. Then Joe scoops her into his arms and carries her into her room and lays Jill across the bed. She pulls him near her and they roll together as one.

Courtney and Lucy are sitting in the hall outside Mary's room while Frank and Kevin comfort Mary
Lucy: You know when we got the call from Victor that Mary was sick I imagined a million and one things but never this.
Courtney: I know I don't think anyone expected this. I wish Victor hadn't run off like that. I know it's a shock but really he needs to be here.
Lucy: Oh well you see Victor has a whole lot of baggage that he carries around with him. He blames himself for Ryan turning out the way he did and pretty much blames himself for all of Ryan's victims deaths. He also blames himself for all the problems Kevin has had.
      Courtney shakes her head sadly
Courtney: That is awful he shouldn't be blaming himself
Lucy: Yeah I know I've tried to help him understand that but you know if you believe something long enough and hard enough it's nearly impossible to change how you feel. Victor is afraid he'll make the same mistakes. He doesn't think very highly of himself.
Courtney: Well I hope he pulls himself together because Mary needs him.
Lucy: Oh he will when it comes to Mary Victor always comes through. He just needs sometime.
      Courtney nods.
Lucy: Speaking of children that's great that you and Frank are going to try and have a baby. I'm sure Neil will be thrilled and Christina will be a good big sister I'm sure.
Courtney: Oh I know they will. Neil as wanted to be a big brother for ages. It's all he's been able to talk about ever since
Courtney's voice trails off and a sad look passes over her face. Lucy sensing what is wrong reaches out and takes Courtney's hand.
      Lucy: Ever since you miscarried.
      Courtney nods
Courtney: Yeah, he he was really excited to become a big brother you know. I was really excited for the baby to.
Lucy: Well maybe this time it will all work out.
      Courtney: Maybe
Lucy sensing Courtney uncertainty squeezes her hand.
Lucy: You know I've had several miscarriages and I know how devastating they are and how gun shy of pregnancy they can make you. but Courtney when you finally are able to be a mother to a child you've been wanting there is nothing like it.
Courtney: How did you get through the fear? Or have you?
      Lucy considers this
Lucy: Kevin and I will try again to have a child of our own. It isn't that you stop being scared Courtney it's that you want a child enough to walk through the fear and not let it hold you back. Besides your miscarriage was caused by a car accident while no one knows what causes me to miscarry.
Courtney: But the out come is still the same
      Lucy: Yeah I know
Both ladies have tears in their eyes and they hug.
Courtney: I'm sorry I didn't mean to bother you with this
Lucy: You are not bothering me. Listen the team raising Christina consists of all of us not just Frank and I. That makes you very important and the truth is we're a lot alike.
      Courtney smiles
Courtney: thanks. Christina is a wonderful little girl. And I'm proud to be part of the team but sometimes when I look at her I can't help but
Lucy: But think of the child you lost. I know I sometimes feel that same way.
      Courtney: really?
Lucy: Let me give you some advice my doc gave me when I miscarried our baby. He told me not to hide my grief that I had every right to grieve for the child even though I'd never met them. It's good advice and it makes life more bearable.
      Courtney nods
Courtney: I must sound so selfish given the fact Mary is lying in there scared out of her mind at being pregnant.
Lucy: Not at all. You know every time I see a baby I think about the ones I lost. I imagine Christina is also hard for you to deal with sometimes because she is Franks
      Courtney nods
Courtney: It's not that she's hard to deal with she just brings a lot of emotions to the surface. You know are baby was a girl so when I look at her I can't help but think of our child. And the fact that Frank had a child with someone else is sometimes hard to deal with but I manage. it's also hard watching Frank play catch up with his kids. He's had to do it with both of them.
      Lucy nods
Lucy: I know how hard that is. I didn't see Serena until she was 6 years old because Scott took her to Canada. Is there anything I can do?
Courtney: Well one thing that's really hard for him is he doesn't know what's a first and what is something she's already been doing. Like when we were at the park she said up and he didn't know if that was a new word or not.
Lucy: She said up! Oh that is a new word that's great! Listen Courtney I can help with that. What if I put together a list of all her words and things she dose so Frank can know.
      Courtney: That would be great.
      Lucy: Great.
The women look at each other knowing a new friendship has been born.

Eve walks slowly through the park breathing in the worm summer air as the hot sun cascades down on her. Suddenly she notices a small note on the ground resting on it is a Hershey kiss. She picks up the note and reads

Fallow the tail of kisses and find a spot that will sweeten your day.
      Scott.

Eve smiles and shakes her head then notice another Hershey kiss on the ground and another. She fallows the trail picking them up along the way. Finally she comes around the bend near a set of picnic tables. She sees a basket on one of the tables with a note on it along with a Hershey kiss.

      Look inside

Eve looks inside and pulls out fresh baked French bread. A plate of gourmet cheeses and fresh fruit. A bowl of pasta salad, a bottle of wine and a tray of exotic chocolates. By the basket are to silver candles that have already been lit. Suddenly a hand rests on her should she turns quickly and finds Scott smiling at her holding a Daisy in his hand. He smiles and places it gently behind her ear.
      Scott: Hi there gorgeous
      Eve smiles
Eve: Hi Scotty this this is incredible.
      Scott: So you like it?
Eve: I love it! It's it's just right.
Scott: Well good cause I wanted to brighten your day. You sounded upset this morning and I wanted to cheer you up.
Eve: Oh it did but is that the only reason you did all this?
Eve looks at him feeling a tad disappointed
Scott: Well getting to see you is certainly a benefit.
Scott smiles at her Eve smiles back so happy to have him near.
      Scott: Shall we?
Scott indicates the table and they sit down.
Eve: Scott this really is sweet of you everything looks so good!
Scott: Well what can I say I know what you like
Scott grins, Eve smiles at him.
      Eve: yeah you do.
They gaze deeply into one another's eyes and before they even know it their lips meet. They kiss tenderly then surprised at this they pull back quickly.
Scott: I'm sorry I didn't mean to rush you I mean I wanted to kiss you but
      Eve: It's okay I I liked it
Scott: Me to but I think we shouldn't rush it
They gaze deeply at each other.
Eve: No no you're right we shouldn't do that.
      They move towards each other.
Scott: We don't want to hurt each other.
      There lips are inches apart.
Eve: No I'd never want to hurt you
There lips meet for an instant
Scott: And I'd never want to hurt you.
They kiss again this time longer. They pull back Eve starts to speak Scott gently rests his finger on her lips
      Scott: Sshhh
They kiss again this time with passion.

Victor sits silently on a park bench look around aimlessly as his thoughts wander.
Victor: Pregnant Mary is pregnant? I'm to old and have made to many mistakes how can I even consider trying again. Look at all the lives I've hurt by being a father the first time around.
Victor looks down at the ground sadly. He sighs and leans back against the park bench. He hears a small child laughing. Victor turns his head and sees a man pushing a little girl on a swing. Her hair is long and as she is pushed in the air she swings her head back and her hair almost touches the ground. She is laughing so hard that her eyes are closed. The man pushing her is smiling and shaking his head.
      Girl: Higher Daddy higher!
Man: How high do you want to go sweet heart?
Girl: All the way to the sky! Wheeeeeeeee!!!
The man laughs. Victor smiles as he watches this seen
Victor: Not that it doesn't have it's nice moments
      Victor sighs
Victor: but what am I saying I made a lousy Dad the first time around so why wouldn't I be this time.
Just then he hears whistling he turns and sees Mike walking along.
Mike: Hey Victor! How are you doing? How is Mary? listen I don't mean to pry but she seemed kind of not quite her self the other day. Is everything okay?
      Victor shakes his head
      Victor: She's pregnant
      Mike laughs
Mike: yeah right come on Victor
Victor looks at Mike seriously and Mike realizes that it's no joke.
Mike: What! Are you sure? Wow Uhm well congratulations I guess.
      Victor shakes his head
Victor: Mike I don't see any reason to congratulate me. I am a lousy Dad. My son Ryan grew up to be a serial killer because I didn't do right by him. My son Kevin has battled mental demands for years because I didn't do right by him. I don't even want to think how I'll screw up this one
Victor hangs his head sadly. Mike sits down beside Victor
Mike: But you're not the same man you were then Victor life doesn't have to repeat its self.
      Victor: How do you know.
Mike: Okay look when my son was growing up I was an awful father. I was never there and when I was I lied to him, neglected him, stole from him and was pretty rude to him. He grew up to hate me and he had every right to. Once I left for good his mother married an abusive cop who beat the living daylights out of both of them everyday. Now just like you I can say well I didn't know but just like you I can't make myself feel less guilty by saying it. Because when it comes to your kids not knowing is no excuse. But I also no that damage can be repaired. And you know it to. Victor when I first came to port Charles Sonny wanted nothing to do with me he hated me. But now we've built a real father son bond. We love and respect each other as you and Kevin do. Look we've made mistakes but I know I'm not the same man I was and I doubt you're either.
Victor: But how can I know I won't make a mess of this child?
Mike: Because you don't want to. You're going to be extra careful because of that which is going to ensure you don't screw him or her up. Listen Victor I know the age thing poses a problem but if it were me I'd be dancing in the streets. You're getting a second chance to do things right that's something most of us don't get.
Victor: Well that is one way to look at it.
Mike: Besides you are having this child with a good woman and that makes a difference.
      Victor nods in agreement.
Mike: Well I need to go I'm picking Tammy up for a late lunch. Listen Victor for what it's worth I think you'll be a great Dad and I think you're lucky to be getting this chance. Tell Mary I said congratulations.
      Victor smiles
      Victor: Thanks Mike
      Mike smiles and walks off
Victor looks over and sees the man lifting his little girl onto his shoulders and carrying her off. She is resting her head on top of his as they hold each others hands. Victor smiles at the picture
Victor: I think I can do that.
Victor then looks closer at the man and is startled to see that he is an older man possibly in his fifties.
      Victor: I can do that!
Victor gets up off the bench and walks off with a new bounce in his step.

Karen is sitting in her office doing some paper work. Her mind keeps wondering though making it hard to focus. She keeps wondering how Chris is doing. Then she thinks about Mary and how hard it's going to be for her given her age. then she thinks about Joe and how wrong she was about him being a great guy. She sighs and decides to listen to some music so she turns on her favorite radio station.
DJ: And now we have a special dedication. Go ahead sir.
Chris: Hi uhm I've been going through a really horrible time
Karen gasps recognizing the voice of the caller as Chris But could it be?
Chris: And there has been this one friend her name is Karen and she's just been the greatest. Well anyways I wanted to tell her thank you and dedicate a song to her.
DJ: Sounds like one special lady what song would you like to play for her?
Chris: Thank you for being a friend to Karen From Chris.
DJ: Okay Chris here is your request and dedication.
      Chris: thanks
      The song begins to play

Thank you for being a friend
Traveled down the road and back again
Your heart is true your a pal and a confidant.

And if you through a party
      Invited everyone you ever knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say thank you for being a friend.

As the song plays Karen listens in stunned silence as tears come to her eyes.
Karen: What a nice thing for him to do. I can't believe how wrong I was about him. He's really a decent guy.
Karen listens happily and truly touched to the rest of the song. She makes a mental note to thank Chris for the song. Then goes back to her work.

Victor walks into Mary's room quietly holding a small paper bag. Mary is sleeping peacefully. Victor looks at her for a minute full of love for this beautiful woman in front of him. He walks over to her and gently brushes the hair out of her eyes. Mary's eyes flutter open Victor looks into her eyes and smiles
Victor: Well hello there Mary my sweet.
      Mary half smiles
Mary: Victor I know this came out of the blue, and I know we are older but
Victor sits down and takes her hands in his
Victor: Mary it's okay I was shocked and frightened at first but I think we can do this and I want to do this. This baby is a miracle and I can't wait to be it's Daddy.
Victor beams at Mary Mary stairs at Victor full of love and relief
Mary: Oh Victor really do you mean it do you think we can do it.
Victor squeezes her hands and smiles
Victor: Yes together we can do anything
      Mary starts to cry
Mary: Oh victor I'm so glad you think so I want this baby so much.
      They hug
Victor: So do I so do I and speaking of the baby I have something here for us.
He hands Mary the bag she reaches in and pulls out a baby name book
      Mary reads the cover
Mary: 100 most loved Irish names Oh Victor
      They hug happily.

Karen is at the nurses station working on a chart when Mary comes up to her. It has been three days since the news of her pregnancy came out and she is back at work and on blood pressure medication.
Mary: Karen here is that chart you wanted.
Karen: Thanks Mary, so how are you feeling?
Mary: Okay a little nauseous but I ate some crackers and that helped. I still can't believe I'm pregnant I never thought I would be again.
Karen: I'm sure you didn't. But you know you won't be the oldest to ever have a child
Mary: I know, I just hope Victor and I have the energy to do this.
      Karen smiles
Karen: Mary I've seen you with your boys you'll make the energy.
      Mary smiles appreciatively.
      Mary: Thank you.
Mary goes to check on a patient as Karen continues to work. He hears footsteps coming close and looks up. She is surprised to say the least to see a clean shaven and well dressed Chris standing in front of her.
Karen: Chris! What are you doing here? I was going to call you later this morning. How are you doing? Thanks again for that song you dedicated to me
      Chris half smiles
Chris: You're welcome, I was thinking about what you said last night about getting on with my life. You know how Julie wouldn't want me to stop living.
      Karen nods
Karen: She wouldn't she loved you so much Chris.
Chris: Well that's why I'm here I'm coming back to work. Next to your friendship it's all I have in this world.
      Karen looks at Chris sympathetically.
Karen: Chris I think it's great that you want to come back to work really I do. You are a great doctor and as I told you before a true asset to GH. But are you sure you're ready? I'm mean it's only been a week, if you need more time you can have it.
Chris: Karen I could wait a year and starting back at work would still be hard. Besides I can either sit around the house being sad with nothing to do or I can be here being sad but making a difference. Maybe because of me someone else won't have to feel the pain I'm feeling.
      Karen smiles at her friend
Karen: Well in that case welcome back. But Chris I mean it don't push yourself to hard if you feel like you can't handle it yet just tell me and you can go home okay. And if you want to talk please come find me my door is always open.
Chris: Thanks Karen I promise to only do what I can, and if I need to talk I'll find you. There is an awkward moment of silence
Chris: Karen there is actually one thing you could do for me.
      Karen: Name it.
Chris: I need to see Julie's chart.
      Karen: Chris
Chris: Please Karen everyone keeps saying how badly she was hurt and how Eve did all she could, but I need to see it. I have to know exactly what was wrong with her. I can't just except no one was to blame for her dying I need to see that chart.
Karen: Are you sure you can handle looking at it?
Chris: Karen I need to if I'm ever going to be able to stop placing blame or really move on I have to know as much about her death as I can.
      Karen nods
Karen: Okay hold on I'll get the files on Julie.
Karen quickly goes to find them. When she returns Chris is sitting over on the couch she comes over him.
Karen: Are you sure you want to see this Chris? It isn't pleasant.
Chris: It can't hurt anymore then loosing her did.
Karen hands him the file and starts to walk away
      Chris: Karen
      Karen turns
Chris: Uhm are you really busy right now?
      Karen smiles
      Karen: No not at all
Karen sits down next to Chris as he opens the file and begins to read.
Lucy is hurriedly walking down the street her arms full of packages. Victor his coming in the opposite direction his arms loaded down with books neither is really paying attention to where they are going. Suddenly they bump into each other and packages go everywhere.
Victor: Oh Lucy I'm so sorry! Are you okay?
Lucy: Victor Oh My Gosh are you alright I'm sorry.
They both scramble to help pick up the others packages.
Lucy: I'm fine I should have been watching where I was going are you okay?
Victor: Oh I'm fine and it was my fault I was way to lost in thought.
As they get there packages back together Lucy notices all the books Victor has.
Lucy: You sure have a lot of books here
She reads a couple of the titles.
Lucy: A Guide For New Parents, An Owners Manual For Baby From Birth To One Year.
Victor: It's for research, Lucy I've been given a second chance and I'm not going to blow it. I'm going to study every book and raising children I can find and then study some more. I won't fail this child.
      Lucy looks at Victor sympathetically
Lucy: I'm sure you won't Victor. I've already seen how great you're with Neil, and Christina I'm sure you'll be wonderful with this baby.
      Victor sighs
Victor: I wish I shared your confidence All I know is I made massive mistakes with Ryan and Kevin and I'm going to make sure I don't screw up this one.
Lucy: Victor as long as you do your best you won't screw up
Victor: I thought I was doing the best I could last time and look what happened.
      Victor sighs
Victor: So it looks like you are on quite the shopping spree
Lucy: Oh yeah well with Christina I don't get as much done as I need to. She's spending the day with Frank and Courtney so I'm using my time well.
      Victor smiles
Victor: I'm so glad it's all working out for you
Lucy: Me to you know Frank is one great father. Christina's very lucky to have him around
Victor: That he is. Lucy you have just given me a splendid idea!
Victor claps his hands together excitedly
      Lucy: What?
Victor: I'm going to research Frank! I'll interview him and watch him and study his every move as a father! Thank you so much Lucy!
Victor races off with all his books.
      Lucy: Victor wait!
Victor is already half way down the street. Lucy sighs and shakes her head.
      Lucy: Poor Frank

Neil and Serena are playing in the park on the swings.
Serena: So you are going to have an aunt or uncle that is younger then you?
Neil: Yeah it's pretty weird but Dad said that this kid is a blessing and a gift from God so I guess it's cool.
Serena: But if your grandma is pregnant doesn't that mean that her and Victor had to
Neil and Serena look at each other as the idea sinks in they scrunch their faces up in disgust
      Neil: Eww
      Serena: Gross!
Neil: Hey wait I know maybe they didn't I mean her name is Mary
Serena: Yeah maybe it's God's baby or something
Neil: That would be so cool!
Serena: It really would be awesome.
Neil: I'll ask my Dad about it.
Serena: Thanks for letting me come along today. I don't like being away from Christina.
Neil: You're welcome I'm glad you could come. After all she is both of our sister.
Serena: Yeah it's really cool the way your Dad arranged it so we could all share her.
Neil: Yeah my Dad's the bomb!
      Neil grins proudly.
Neil: So where is your Dad today?
Serena: He had some stuff to do at work.
      Neil nods.
      They continue to swing.

Chris and Karen are sitting side by side on the couch in the waiting area as he finishes going over Julie's chart. He takes a deep breath and rubs his face. Karen rests a comforting hand on his arm.
Karen: Chris I'm sorry maybe I should not have let you seen this just yet.
Chris pulls himself together and clears his throat as he swallows his tears
Chris: No no I needed to see this. I needed to know just what her injuries were and how severe they were. You were right it was no ones fault everything that could have been done was done.
Chris breaks down crying Karen wraps him in his arms and hugs him tightly.
Karen: Chris I'm sorry I'm so sorry. I know you wanted to put the blame somewhere but there was just no where to put it.
      Chris pulls himself together some
Chris: Yeah I see that. I just wish she'd lived long enough for me to have said goodbye.
      Chris rubs his face
Karen: I know but Chris she's watching you from Heaven I just know it and she knows how much you love her.
      Chris: I hope so.
      Karen smiles
Karen: I'm sure of it. Look why don't you take today off to you seem really shaky.
Chris: Karen I'll be fine, besides I have some things I have to do.
      Karen sighs
Karen: Okay but if it gets to much for you I want you to come find me deal
      Chris: deal
      Karen starts to leave
      Chris: Karen
      Karen turns
      Karen: Yeah
      Chris: Thanks
      Karen smiles
      Karen: You're welcome.

Eve lays sleeping in bed enjoying her day off. Suddenly she starts dreaming. She sees herself in a bawl gown standing in a beautiful garden at night. There is soft music playing and Scott steps out from behind a bush and extends his hand to her.
Scott: Let us dance my love.
Eve takes his hand but as they start to dance a cold wind starts blowing suddenly Eve is ripped from Scott's arms by the wind and she is flying uncontrollably through the air. She lands in a dark cold and damp cemetery. Dark shadows loom everywhere as ominous sounds come from ever direction. She tries to stand up but falls. She then notices a head stone next to her inscribed on it is the name Julie. Suddenly the head stone falls over and out comes a very bloody and mangled Julie. Eve tries to scream but nothing comes out. Julie grabs Eve and pins her to the ground
Julie: Now it's your turn to die you murderer!
She raises a bloody knife. Suddenly Eve is at GH walking down the hall doing her rounds. She hears Alan Qourtermaine call her name and turns to talk to him.
Eve: Hi Alan how may I help you.
Alan looks at Eve with such disapproval that Eve feels as though she wants to shrink into a whole.
Alan: Dr. Lambert at this hospital we pride ourselves on saving all lives not just the ones we want to save. We don't pick and choose we just save.
Eve: And that's the way it should be.
      Alan sighs
Alan: Then why is Julie Ramsey dead. Look Eve
He points to her hands Eve looks down and sees that they are covered in blood.
at this point Eve wakes up screaming in a cold sweat. She is crying and shaking.
Eve: What if I really didn't do all I could, maybe I did let her die. Oh Chris I'm sorry I'm sorry.
Just then the door bell rings. Eve tries to pull herself together pulls on her robe and goes to the door. She opens it and is shocked to say the least to see Chris standing there. He hands her some Cinnamon rolls.
      Chris: Peace offering
Chris gives her a weak smile
Eve: What's this about? What are you doing here? And if you have come to yell I'm not really in the mood!
Chris: No Eve I didn't come to yell I came to say I'm sorry.
Eve looks at Chris stunned in all the time she's known him she's never heard him say I'm sorry before.
      Chris: May I come in
Eve: Uh yeah sure please do
      Chris comes in
Eve: Please have a seat can I get you something?
Chris: No no thanks I can't stay long I went back to work today so I need to get back there. Karen doesn't even know I left. I just thought I'd come by here real quick since things are pretty calm over there at the moment. I was going to wait till tonight but this kept nagging at me.
Eve: You went back to work today? Chris that's great!
Chris: Yeah I thought it might help me to keep busy. Less time to think about Julie and all.
Chris takes a deep breath. Eve sees the pain just the thought of her name brings to Chris and aches for her friend
Eve: Chris I'm really sorry, I know you don't believe me but
Chris: But I do, I shouldn't have blamed you Eve you're an excellent doctor. You'd never just let a patient die no matter who they were. I guess I just couldn't except that it was nothing more then an accident. I needed to be able to point my finger at someone and say you're to blame. It somehow made me feel a little better and less helpless. Since if someone was to blame I could be avenging Julie's death or something.
Chris shrugs and looks down sadly at the ground
Eve: Chris I can't fault you for having so little faith in me I mean I have been a rotten friend. I was thinking the night she died why shouldn't you think that I wouldn't come through for you when I never really have come through before.
Chris: Well I could have been a better friend to. Eve: Maybe we could start fresh?
Chris: Well I'm starting everything else over why not.
Eve comes over and the two old friends hug.

Frank is pushing Christina in the baby swing as he keeps and eye on Neil and Serena. Courtney is standing near by.
Courtney: Just think this time next year you'll not only be watching your daughter but your little sister or brother as well.
Frank: And with any luck maybe a child of our own.
He kisses Courtney lightly on the cheek.
Frank: I still can't believe that my Mom is pregnant.
Courtney: It is hard to believe. I'm sure she'll be fine.
Frank: Oh I know she'll be a great Mom but her age is a concern.
Courtney: Well I'm sure she'll take care of herself and you know it's not as if Kevin and Lucy, and you and I won't be there to help.
      Frank: True.
Suddenly Frank notices Victor sitting near by on a park bench watching him intently and scribbling stuff down in a note book.
Frank: What is he doing? Hold on
      Frank walks over to Victor
      Frank: Hey Victor what's up?
Victor: I'm studying very hard I won't mess up this time I'm going to do it right
      Frank smiles
Frank: Victor I'm sure you'll do just fine.
Victor: You're right I will because I'm doing lots of research. Now please go back to your kids so I can learn.
      Frank: what?
Victor: Well Frank everyone knows you're a great Dad. So if I study you and watch you closely then I'll know what to do when the baby comes.
Frank smiles and tries to stifle a chuckle.
Frank: Victor I'm flattered really I am but you don't have to study me to become a good day. As long as you give your kids your all you'll be fine. Love them, protect them and try to give them the best. That's all any of us can do.
Victor: Frank I thought I did that with Kevin but well in his opinion he thinks I was a rotten father so I must not have done it right. And you he's right I was a rotten father. Now I know you want your sister or brother to have a good father so go back to Christina and Neil so I can learn
      Frank: Victor
Victor: Please Frank I have to learn!
Frank sighs realizing this is not an argument he can learn.
      Frank: Okay
He goes back over to Courtney.
      Courtney: What's going on?
      Frank: Pre Father hood hysteria
      Courtney laughs
      Courtney: What
Frank: He is studying me to learn how to be a Dad. He thinks he will be an awful one and he thinks I'm a good one so he's studying me.
      Courtney snickers
      Courtney: Oh poor Victor.

Chris is standing in the cubical down in the ER where Julie died. Karen walks in and sees him standing there looking very vulnerable. She has this sudden urge to just wrap him in her arms and hold him tight. She is surprised by this and shrugs it off
      Karen: Chris you okay?
Chris jumps not knowing anyone was in the room
Chris: Oh hi Karen yeah I guess just thinking. You know the night she died I didn't think I'd ever come back to this room I never wanted to enter GH again.
Karen: I'm glad you changed your mind. You know when I was married one time Jagger got shot and I was on call in the ER when he was brought in. He was critical and we didn't know if he'd make it. He did but I never quite got over that sick feeling when ever I'd pass that ER. I can't even fathom what you're feeling
Chris: Hopefully you'll never have to know.
Just then they here an hysterical man screaming coming through the ER doors. They go running into the hall, and see a young man holding a badly hurt and unconscious women in his arms and he's bobbing
Man: Please Someone help me! Oh God please don't take her from me! Help me Help me!
Karen runs for a gurney Chris goes to the man with a nurse at his heals.
      Chris: What happened!
Man: She was hit by a car! Please you have to save her she's all I have!
Chris feels a connection that he's never felt before for a patient.
Chris: Okay lets get her into exam room 2
Chris and Karen rush the women into the same room Julie died Gabriella escorts the man to the waiting area
Gabriella: Sir what is your name
Man: John John Baker is my wife going to be okay? I can't loose her I just can't.
Gabriella: Dr. Ramsey and Dr. Wexler are among the best.
Chris: Hook her up to the heart monitor! Give me three leaders of 0- neg stat! Order a Cat scan and a trauma panel! Alert the OR! Lets get her hooked up to a vent! Hand me the chest tube! Get a neck brace! Give 5 cc's Icapro she's hypertensive and bridicartic! come on people move! 12 cc's adrenalin stat! Dam she's in V fib charge to 200! Clear!
      Traci: She's flat line!
Chris: Give 3 of nitro and open the fluids!
      Chris starts CPR
Chris: Dose anyone know her name!
      Traci: Emma
Chris: Come on Emma come on. Okay charge to 300! Clear!
Traci: We have a sinus rhythm
Chris: Okay alert the OR that we're on our way with a sever trauma, call Tony Jones she'll need a neurologist to! Lets move!
They rush Emma off to the OR. Karen looks at Chris who is covered with blood.
      Karen: Welcome back Dr. Ramsey
      Chris half smiles
Chris: Thanks well I better go tell Mr. Baker what is going on.
Karen nods Chris goes to the hall
      Chris: Mr. Baker
John: My wife is she okay?
Chris: She's stable and she's been taken up to the OR. Now her injuries are very serious she has a lot of internal injuries and some head trauma. However she is in the best hands possible. I know that doesn't help much but right now everything that can be done is being done. She's got a fight ahead of her but it's no where near time to loose hope.
      John nods
John: Thank you Doctor thank you
      Chris shakes his hand
Chris: You're welcome I'll check back later to see how she is okay
      John nods.
Karen watches with tears in her eyes.
Karen: How did I miss what a great guy Chris is. Look at his compassion.

Chris is busy at the nurses station doing some paper work on Emma Baker, when he suddenly starts over hearing a conversation between Amy and Gracie
Amy: I just can't believe he's really trying to get her fired!
Gracie: I know I mean they are supposed to be best friends
Amy: I think were is the right word to use. I just don't know why Joe is so intent on destroying Karen.
Chris's ears perk up when he hears this last part.
Gracie: I know what did she ever do to him but try to be the best girlfriend and fiancé possible. And this is how he repays her love an loyalty. By trying to make her look like an incompetent, irresponsible, dangerous, drug addict.
Amy: Well lucky for Karen Alan has a tune of faith in her.
Gracie: yeah well I just hope it's enough. Jill told me that Joe is going to endanger patients if he has to to get her fired
Amy: That's awful! we should tell Alan
Gracie: But we have no proof you know she'll just deny it.
Amy: Poor Karen I sure hope something stops Joe
Gracie: Me to if Joe has it his way she'll never be able to practice medicine again.
They walk away unaware that Chris has heard every word. He is surprised at how suddenly protective of Karen he feels and how angry towards Joe he feels. Just then Traci walks up
Traci: Hi Dr. Ramsey I just thought you'd like to know that Emma Baker is out of surgery and is doing very well. You probably saved her life doctor great work.
      Chris half smiles
Chris: Thanks Traci all In a days work I guess. Hey Traci you and Karen are close right?
Traci: She's one of my best friends
Chris: Okay then maybe you can clear this up for me. I just heard Amy and Gracie gossiping. And it may be nothing more then gossip knowing those two. But given the fact that Karen has been such a good friend to me I need to make sure it isn't something bigger.
      Traci: Okay what
Chris: Well they were saying that Joe is trying to destroy Karen and is doing everything he can to get her fired
      Traci sighs sadly
Traci: It's true, he's told Alan she was negligent in the ER which forced her to get a drug test, He's stolen files that Boardman has wanted from Karen and then given them to Boardman claiming he found them somewhere they shouldn't have been, he's even stooped so low as to take the batteries out of her pager.
Chris: What! I can't believe this! I always new Joe was a jerk but I never thought he'd stoop this far. Well he's not going to get his way Karen has earned my friendship and I won't let her down.
Chris says with determination Traci smiles
Traci: We are all determined to fight him. Karen has most of the nursing staff on her side and we're tough
Chris remembers the strike and smiles
Chris: Yeah you are aren't you.
Traci: Well I need to get back to work I'll talk to you later
Chris: Okay Traci and thanks for the information
      Traci: Anytime
Traci leaves soon after both Joe and Karen are working at the nurses station. Chris is keeping a close eye on Joe's movements but is doing a good job of hiding it.
Karen: So Chris how are you holding up?
Chris: I'm doing okay I think coming back was the best thing I could do for myself.
Karen: Well I'm glad you're back
She smiles and finishes writing in a chart.
Karen: Nancy I just finished this chart when you have a chance Mr. Decker in room 322 needs to be given his new medication Dr. Boardman prescribed I have the dosage written in. I need to go check on some x-rays right now.
      Nancy nods
      Nancy: Yes Doctor Wexler.
Karen leaves Nancy starts to go to the file but Jill runs up and stops her.
Jill: Nancy I need your help with a patient right now please hurry.
Jill grabs Nancy by the hand and drags her away. Joe quickly walks over to the chart and thinking Chris is not paying attention quickly alters the file and leaves. As soon as Joe is out of sight Chris grabs the chart.
Chris shakes his head in disgust
Chris: That hot headed holier then thou monster. He's endangering patients now! Well it's not going to happen Joe isn't going to hurt patients or Karen.
Chris quickly whites out the overdose size dosage Joe re wrote on the chart and changes it back to the original dose that Karen wrote down. Nancy and Jill come back down the hall and Nancy gets the chart and goes to teat the patient.
Chris: Looks like you got back just in time Ramsey
Unbeknownst to Chris Amy has been watching from not far away.
Amy: Waite till I tell Gracie!
