CHAPTER EIGHT

Karen and John are sitting in Karen's hotel room watching the news.
John: I still can't believe you did this for me Karen.
John shakes his head. Karen smiles.
Karen: Well don't thank me yet, okay? Lets first see if this works. Besides I'm doing no more then you did for me.
They smile at each other.
John: It was my pleasure.
Just then a reporter comes on the screen.
Karen: Oh this is it! That's the reporter who came here!
Reporter: And now a special human interest story. It's about a young doctor on the verge of a medical break through, his work stolen along with his life, now his family in financial ruin and one cousins fight to help. It sounds like a soap opera but is all to real to one man, Mr. John Marshak.
The reporter turns to John who is sitting in the hotel lobby.
Reporter: Mr. Marshak thank you so much for joining us tonight. Could you please tell us your story?
John smiles
John: Thank you for having me. My cousin Jake was an extremely gifted doctor. He had worked in labs with different chemicals since he was a kid. And his mind only furthered his fascination with chemicals. When, my cousin Jake came to Port Charles he almost immediately began working on new research projects. Including DL-56. It's a nerve regeneration drug. And if it had ever been perfected to where there were no side affects it would have been the find of the century. We are talking about a drug that would allow the paralyzed to be unparalyzed, the brain damaged to heal, those with injured organs to recover and so forth. His research was cutting edge and like any good doctor he kept all of his notes.
Reporter: It sounds very impressive.
John: It was. Anyway, during his research he came across a doctor with less then ethical ideas about how to be successful. He stole my cousins work and passed it off as his. Jake tried to have the hospital fight. But instead General Hospital stood by the thief who stole my cousins hard work.
Reporter: And who was this?
John sighs
John: Bennett Devlin and his partner Chris Ramsey. They got a patent on it before anything could be done. But I have the notes and journal entries to prove that Jake is the one who created this drug not Devlin and Ramsey as they'd like you to think.
Reporter: Isn't it true that this drug has very harmful side effects.
John: Yes. Which is why it is not in use. However it was sold to Drake Pharmisuiticals for a hefty price. And I think it's time Jake got the recognition he deserved along with a check written to his family.
Reporter: Your cousin is dead now correct?
John: Yes but his family isn't. Jake was an only child so when he died his parents were left with know children to help them or advise them on money issues. His parents are immigrants and have been taken advantage of badly. They are now bankrupt and could quite possibly and shortly be homeless. The money this drug has already generated could bail them out.
Reporter: So this is away to save his family.
John: Correct. That and I think his memory deserves credit for what he did. But it is mainly to help his family financially.
Reporter: Now, I understand you blame the hospital for this?
John nods
John: There policy's of standing behind doctors who have been there longer no matter what they do is both unethical and disgraceful. And the pharmisuitacle company's need to be held accountable to. It is preposterous that with a drug this incredible they wouldn't do research and make sure that the person selling the drug is actually the creator.
John and Karen look at each other and smile
John: You think it will work?
Karen: I think it will get their attention.
Just then John's Cell Phone Rings.
John: Hello?
Lee: Is this John Marshak?
John: Speaking.
Lee: I'm Lee Baldwin and I am the attorney for General Hospital.
John: Well, hello Mr. Baldwin.
Lee: I'd like to meet with you and discuss the claims you are making against the hospital.
John: I'd be happy to meet with you Sir.
Lee: Okay, how about 8pm the Port Charles Grill.
John: That would be fine.
They hang up.
John: That was the attorney for the hospital.
Karen smiles and nods
Karen: Okay first step was successful, we got there attention. Now, to get you ready for tonight.
Karen picks up the phone and dials a number. John watches her very impressed.
John: No wonder Jake thought the world of you.
Karen smiles as she waits for someone to answer.
Frank comes into the house whistling and finds Joe and Gabby making dinner.
Gabriella: Well, it sounds like someone had a good day.
Frank smiles
Frank: Yeah it was pretty good.
Joe smiles
Joe: Now Jill wouldn't have anything to do with that smile on your face would she?
Frank: Well, lets just say her company certainly adds to it.
Gabriella smiles
Gabriella: I'm glad Frank. You both deserve some happiness.
Joe: Yeah, speaking of which, Gabby was on the phone with Denise a little while ago and apparently you have really added some happiness to Jill's life.
Gabriella: She told us about Ruth, and your great day in the park.
Frank smiles and blushes.
Frank: Hey, look, I thought Jill could use a good companion and it was a nice day for a walk in the park.
Frank plops down. Joe and Gabriella look at each other knowingly.
Joe: Come on Frank admit it you like her.
Frank: I never said I didn't.
Gabriella: Well in that case why don't you invite her over for dinner.
Joe: Yeah that's a great idea. Mom and Victor are coming over why don't you call Jill and ask her to join us.
Frank laughs
Frank: Dinner with the family huh.
Joe: Why not?
Gabriella grabs the phone and hands it to Frank.
Gabriella: Come on Frank, if you like her you have to let her know. And dinner with the family is a good place to start.
Joe: Absolutely.
Frank sighs
Frank: Well, it would be a nice excuse to spend more time with her.
Frank dials as Joe and Gabriella watch smiling at each other. They subtly give high five's as Frank listen to the phone ring.
Jill: Hello?
Frank: Hey there.
Jill lights up.
Jill: Oh Frank it's so nice to hear your voice. I had such a great time at the park today.
Frank smiles
Frank: I'm glad. I had a lot of fun to. So how is Ruth adjusting to her new home?
Jill: Oh just perfectly. She's all snuggled up on the couch with me right now. So what do I owe the please of this call.
Frank: Well, first off I wanted to hear your pretty voice.
Jill: Awww
Frank: And secondly I wanted to invite you to dinner tonight.
Jill: Oh, okay, sure, where are we going? Should I dress up?
Frank: Nah it's just dinner over here at my place. Joe and Gabby will be here along with my Mom and Victor. And well, I'd really like it if you could come to.
Jill hesitates.
Jill: I don't know Frank. I mean, don't get me wrong I'd love to have dinner with you. But, but with your family?
Frank: Oh come on they don't bight. Besides you are already friends with Joe and Gabby, you've met Victor and you work with my Mom.
Jill: I'm just thinking it might be awkward all things considered.
Frank catches on.
Frank: Jill I have told you at least a hundred times we don't blame you for what's going on with Joe. And, so you and Joe had a few one night stands together. You weren't a couple. Come on, it's time to put the past in the past and enjoy the present. So will you come?
Jill considers this.
Jill: Well...
Frank: Have you been unhappy with any of my suggestions so far?
Jill smiles
Jill: No. Okay, when do you want me over there.
Frank: An hour would be perfect.
Jill: Okay I'll see you then.
Frank: Okay see you soon. Oh and Jill.
Jill: yeah?
Frank: I can't wait to see you.
Jill smiles and blushes
Jill: I can't wait to see you either.
They hang up and Frank smiles happily.
Gabriella: She's still stressed about the Joe situation, huh?
Frank nods
Frank: Yeah, a little. But I think she's starting to come around.
Joe: I wish there was some way I could help her see she has nothing to feel guilty about.
Frank nods
Frank: Me to. But, I think only time is going to make it easier. You know, it's not that Jill in her head thinks she's guilty of anything. It's that her heart feels she's guilty of something. It's one of the pit falls of having a big heart.
Gabriella: Well, hopefully tonight we can get her one step closer not feeling guilty at all.
Frank smiles
Frank: Well, I'll do my part.
Frank goes upstairs to change. Joe shakes his head sadly. Gabriella wraps her arms around Joe.
Gabriella: What's wrong?
Joe: Sometimes I forget how lucky I am Gabby. I mean, think about it. Jill has HIV, and no family support. I may not have HIV and not only do I have family support but I have you. The woman I love at my side.
Joe shakes his head
Joe: Makes being upset with my situation seem down right selfish.
Gabriella pulls him close
Gabriella: Joe Scanlon you are many things but selfish is not one of them. Look, your situation maybe better then Jill's but it's still not perfect. So, why shouldn't you feel bad about it. And besides based on that telephone call we just heard, well I'd say the playing field is being leveled off nicely.
Joe smiles
Joe: Yeah, Frank really is bringing her a lot of happiness and support.
Gabriella nods
Gabriella: And from what I can tell it's only going to get better for her.
Joe: I hope you're right. One thing I know for sure is I'm heaven blessed to have you in my life.
Gabriella smiles
Gabriella: The feeling is mutual I assure you.
They kiss tenderly.

At General Hospital a person stands at a pay phone and makes a call.
Voice: Hello?
Person: Just thought you'd want to know Ms. Coe is still in a very deep coma.
Voice: I see. And Collins and his daughter?
Person: Have bearly left her side at all. Oh and as you predicted Baldwin is handling Mr. Collins's divorce.
Voice: And where does the Mrs. Collins situation stand right now?
Person: She's locked up tight in jail. Her bail hearing isn't till the day after tomorrow. Ramsey did hire a lawyer for her as you predicted though.
Voice: That's fine I'm sure we can count on Mrs. Collins's mouth tying up that attorney's hands fairly well. Seems to me all is in place.
Person: It would look that way.
Voice: Call me immediately after the bail hearing.
Person: Of course. Good bye.
Voice: Good bye.
The voice on the other end hangs up the phone and rubs his hands together.
Voice: Well now what's that they say about you can't keep a good man down.
The voice laughs
Voice: I guess that goes for naughty boys too.

Lucy is pacing up in Heaven's waiting room as Rafe sits watching.
Lucy: No, no this isn't right at all. I have to get back down there Rafe, I have to! I can't stay up here!
Rafe goes to her and tries to calm her.
Rafe: I know it's hard but you have to have faith. God knows how much you and Kevin love each other. He does Lucy.
Lucy shakes her head
Lucy: No Rafe, that's not it! I mean, yes that's part of it. I love Kevin with everything I am. And, and marrying him well that would be my heaven. But, but that's beside the point!
Rafe looks confused
Rafe: I'm not following.
Lucy sighs
Lucy: Rafe if Eve goes to Jail then the person who did this to me will get away with it. I can't let that happen!
Rafe: Are you sure it wasn't her? I mean you said yourself you couldn't remember what happened.
Lucy sighs exasperatedly.
Lucy: Yes, I may not remember exactly what happened but I'm sharp enough to know what didn't. Eve is not bigger or stronger, and I've been in enough cat fights to know how to hold my own. Further more even if she did somehow do this to me, there would be physical evidence on her. I would never go down without a fight. She's have scratches and bruises everywhere! Rafe there is evil in Port Charles. Someone sinister and cold who doesn't value life. Rafe if I don't go back down, this person could hurt someone else.
Rafe sighs
Rafe: Then I hope they send you back down soon. I'm sorry Lucy if it were up to me I'd send you down right now but it's not. All I can tell you is they do try to be fair up here and they have more information then we even do. So, so if you're right then they'll probably send you back down.
Lucy: Probably? Probably?! No probably isn't good enough! I need to speak to someone higher up and I need to do that now!
Ed: Such as me?
They both turn and see a well dressed man enter.
Lucy: Who are you?
Ed smiles
Ed: I'm the man with all the answers.

Chris is at the hospital working late when he sees Livvie coming off the elevator.
Chris: Hey, Livvie, how is Lucy?
Livvie looks at him
Livvie: Like you care?!
Chris looks at Livvie a little hurt. Livvie sighs and walks over to Chris.
Livvie: I'm sorry Chris, you didn't deserve that. I'm just really stressed out.
Chris nods
Chris: I know Lucy is very important to you.
Livvie nods
Livvie: She's like a second Mom to me, or third depending on how you look at it.
Livvie sighs
Chris: I know she cares a lot about you to. So she's still in a coma, huh?
Livvie nods
Livvie: Yeah, she hasn't woken up. We thought we saw a sign of her waking up last night but nothing came of it.
Chris: Well, she still could.
Livvie nods
Livvie: Yeah, I guess. Of course you know when she does she can point the finger right at Eve.
Chris: Not if Eve is innocent.
Livvie scoffs
Livvie: Oh come on Chris of course she is! The desk clerk saw her there, her bracelet was found there, and she had motive!
Chris nods
Chris: All of that is true. However, it's still circumstantial. I mean, maybe she did ransack it, but then left and someone else snuck in and hurt Lucy.
Livvie: Oh give me a break! Who hates Lucy enough to do that? Besides it's a pretty big what if.
Chris sighs
Chris: I know Eve Livvie. And while I'll admit she's done a lot of questionable things, and she's capable of a lot, I don't believe she could do this.
Livvie: Oh like you didn't believe Julie could do anything either? Yet she kidnapped Christina from Lucy, Chris...
Chris: Her daughter Livvie, Julie took HER daughter! Now, you may have every reason to hate Eve. And maybe you have every reason to believe she is guilty. But don't you EVER question whether I was right to be loyal to Julie!
Chris storms off, leaving a surprised Livvie standing there silent.

John and Karen are in the waiting area of the hotel when Scott comes in. Karen goes to him and hugs him.
Karen: Hi Dad.
Scott hugs her back then looks her up and down closely.
Karen: Hey, you okay? I heard what happened? Shouldn't you be in bed?
Karen smiles touched by his concern.
Karen: I'm fine Dad really you don't have to worry.
Karen motions to John who walks over.
Karen: And you have my friend John to thank for that. He was driving passed when he saw the fire. He ran in, dragged me out, and gave me CPR. I probably would have died or at the very least been badly burned if it weren't for him.
John blushes
John: Just helping out a friend.
Scott nods and extends his hand
Scott: Well I'm grateful you did.
They shake hands
Scott: Thank you for saving my daughter. She's very special to me.
John: It was my pleasure Mr. Baldwin.
Scott: So, Karen tells me you are going to go after the hospital for some money?
John: Only what my late cousin Jake is owed. His family needs it and even if they didn't it's rightfully his.
Scott nods
Karen: Dad, Jake was a good friend and DL-56 was his creation. John is right to be doing this. Please help him.
Scott sighs
Scott: It's not that I don't want to. I never agreed with how the Hospital handled it. But John I want you to understand something this could turn into quite a fight. Before I take this on I want to make sure you are prepared.
John: I'm going to help my family no matter what it takes.
Scott looks at him closely and seeing his resolve smiles
Scott: Well, okay then. With your determination and my skills I think we got a shot. Now, listen when we go into this meeting don't get cocky but most definitely don't let them see you sweat. You have to be calm cool and collect. Got it?
John nods
John: Yes sir.
Scott: Okay, then lets go.
Karen: Okay, I'm coming to.
John: Karen...
Scott: That's not a good idea.
Karen: Hey I am fine and I don't need to be coddled.
Scott: I know you don't. But this is business and it's better if it's just the two of us.
John: I'll come see you after the meeting okay?
Karen sighs
Karen: Well, I'd rather be there with you but okay.
John smiles at her.
John: You really are the best you know that. Thank you for all of this Karen.
Karen smiles
Karen: Thank me when you leave with a big fat check.
John smiles.
John: Maybe I won't leave.
Scott watches them closely picking up on the mutual attraction. Karen breaks the acquired moment.
Karen: Well, you'd better get going.
John: Yeah, I guess I'd better.
They hug
Scott: And get some rest okay?
Karen: Yes sir.
They hug.
John and Scott head out.

Mary, Victor, Joe, Gabriella, and Frank are all in the living room. Mary looks at Joe with concern.
Mary: How are you doing darling?
Joe smiles
Joe: I'm fine Mom really. Look so far I've tested negative twice, so my odds are good.
Joe pulls Gabriella close to him.
Joe: And with this angel at my side how could my odds be anything but good.
Gabriella smiles up at him lovingly they share a quick kiss.
Victor: Well, love does to miraculous things.
Mary: And how about you Frank?
Frank smiles
Frank: I'm doing good, in fact someone is joining us for dinner tonight.
Mary: Oh?
Gabriella: Yes, just the girl Frank has been courting recently.
Mary smiles
Mary: Well good for you Frank I'm so glad to hear you decided not to give up on love.
Victor: Oh, yes, you should never give up on love.
Mary: So who is the lucky lady?
Just then the door bell rings.
Frank smiles
Frank: That's probably her.
Frank goes to the door and opens it. Jill steps in smiling.
Jill: Hi sorry I'm late.
Frank smiles
Frank: Not a problem.
He gives her a gentle kiss, causing Jill to practically melt. Frank then steps back letting her enter.
Gabriella: Hey Jill it's good to see you.
Joe: Here let me take your coat.
Jill: Thanks, it's good to see you to.
Everyone then notices the strange look on Mary's face.
Mary: Jill...
Jill takes a deep breath.
Jill: Hello, Mrs. Collins it's so nice to see you.
Mary is silent as she looks at Jill.
Victor: Mary is everything all right?
Mary: I, I, I'm going to go check on dinner.
Mary hurries out Victor goes after her as everyone else just looks at one another. Victor catches up with Mary.
Victor: Mary my sweet, what is it?
Mary sighs and shakes her head.
Mary: The last thing I want to be is a monster, but I do not want that woman in my home, and I most certainly do not want her anywhere near my son! Isn't it enough that she's already put Joe's life in jeopardy! Does she now have to risk Frank's life as well. I don't know what Frank is thinking to be getting involved with her. Sometimes I wish my boys were still kids so I could forbid them to be with people who could hurt them. I thought they were both so much smarter then this. I know, Jill didn't deliberately hurt Joe, and I know she means no harm to Frank but still...
Mary shakes her head. They hear some noise behind them and turn. Jill is standing in the door way with tears running down her face the others are close behind.
Jill: I, I, I'm sorry!
Jill bursts into tears and goes running out of the house.
Frank: HOW DARE YOU TALK ABOUT HER LIKE THAT, WHAT ARE YOU COURTNEY OR SOMETHING!!
Mary: Frances!
Frank: DON'T FRANCES ME I INVITE A WOMAN I CARE VERY MUCH ABOUT OVER AND THIS IS HOW YOU REACT!
Joe: Frank calm down okay, take a deep breath.
Frank glares at Joe.
Frank: It may be okay with you if Mom talks about the people you care about badly but it's not okay with me.
Joe is stung by this and steps back.
Mary: I was just saying...
Frank: I heard what you were just saying, and I have a little news flash for you Jill is no danger to me cause unlike some people I know how to use a freaken condom! And even if I didn't I don't plan on playing Russian rulet with my life!
Now I am going to go find Jill and try to comfort her. And if you don't like it, well that's just to bad.
Frank storms out.
Mary: Well, I....
Victor: Maybe we should go.
Gabriella: No, wait, Mary may I please have a word with you, please?
Everyone looks at each other. Mary sighs
Mary: I guess.
Gabriella: Joe, Victor if you would excuse us.
Victor: I'll be in the living room.
He kisses Mary softly
Mary: Okay.
Joe kiss Gabriella
Joe: Good luck.
Gabriella smiles as Joe leaves.
Gabriella: Why don't we sit down.
They sit at the kitchen table
Mary: Gabriella...
Gabriella: Please just listen, okay? Look, I understand your concerns all right. I mean, with what is going on with Joe how could you not be. But, what you have to remember is that Jill didn't know she had HIV, and she had no reason to think she did when she was with Joe. Her ex tricked her Mary. They were practically married. They were together for three years and lived together. So Jill felt safe, she trusted him. Jill would never have slept with Joe or anyone for that matter had she thought she might have this. Jill is a good person Mary she really is. And because she knows she has it now, she'd never even consider putting Frank in jeopardy. And since both her and Frank are in medical fields they know how to keep things safe. Jill didn't let Frank in right away, he had to work to get their relationship going. Just like I had to work to get Joe and my relationship going. Cause just like Joe was scared, well since she knows she has it, she's ten times more scared.
Mary: I understand that, but...
Gabriella: Mary, let me ask you something okay. Are you happy that Joe has someone? That he isn't alone, that I'm here with him and will stay with him no matter the outcome?
Mary smiles
Mary: Oh, yes, of course. You have brought so much peace and happiness into his life. And I know you have made this easier for him. I thank God he has you everyday.
Gabriella: Okay, then let me ask you this. How would you feel if Joe came over to have dinner with me and my family, and my family reacted to Joe the same way you just reacted to Jill. How would you feel? I men, after all Joe could be a danger to me.
Mary considers this.
Mary: I'd feel horrible. I'd be so angry and hurt for him.
Gabriella: And that's just how Frank is feeling for Jill right now.
Mary: But Joe isn't a threat to you.
Gabriella smiles and takes Mary's hand.
Gabriella: And Jill isn't a threat to Frank.
Mary sighs as what Gabriella has said sinks in.
Mary: You know, for someone so much younger then me you certainly are wiser.
Gabriella smiles and blushes.
Out side Frank has caught up with Jill.
Frank: Jill wait!
Jill turns to him tears running down her face. Frank takes her in his arms and holds her.
Jill: I'm sorry, I'm so sorry.
Frank steps back and looks Jill right in the eye.
Frank: Okay, Jill, I want you to listen to me now. You have nothing to apologize about. You didn't knowingly hurt anyone, and you would never knowingly hurt me. My Mom was completely out of line.
Jill sighs
Jill: Whether I meant to or not isn't the point, Frank. I hurt Joe that's a fact.
Frank: No your ex hurt Joe.
Jill looks at him confused
Frank: What person wouldn't trust someone they'd been dating for three years. What person wouldn't believe they were safe after such a committed relationship. The guy lied to you, and hurt you. Then he didn't tell you the truth, which led to the situation we now have. You are a victim in this Jill not the perpetrator. And besides we don't know that Joe even has it.
Jill tries to smile and shakes her head.
Jill: Why, care so much about how I feel Frank?
Frank pulls her in close.
Frank: Because I care about you. Look, I'm sorry my Mom upset you she had no right to say what she did.
Jill: She's your mother Frank, she has a right to voice her opinion.
Frank: Not when it hurts someone I care about.
Mary: He's right.
They both turn startled by the sudden interruption. Mary approaches them.
Frank: Mom...
Mary raises her hand.
Mary: Jill, I'm sorry I reacted that way to you. I guess, this whole HIV thing just really has me on edge. But the fact is you're not to blame. And I know you are a good person, and you would never do anything to deliberately hurt my boys.
Jill: Mary, I swear to you I wouldn't. And I want to assure you, Frank and I are in no way doing anything even remotely risky.
Mary smiles
Mary: I know you're not. And I am sorry about before. How about if we try this again, okay?
Jill smiles
Jill: Okay.
Mary extends her hand and they shake. Frank stares at Mary in amazement.
Frank: Thanks Mom, and I'm sorry I yelled.
Mary: You're welcome, and it's understandable. Now lets go inside and have some dinner, okay?
Mary turns to go. Frank looks at Jill and smiles
Frank: So, you ready for a Scanlon dinner? I promise the rest won't be so bumpy.
Jill smiles
Jill: Sure.
He takes her hand and they walk in.

Mac is over at Lucy's hotel with Garcia going over stuff.
Garcia: The officers felt certain they hadn't missed anything.
Mac nods
Mac: That doesn't mean they didn't.
Garcia: You think they did?
Mac sighs
Mac: What I think is that Lucy deserves justice and I don't want to leave anything to chance.
Mac then notices that the message light is flashing on the phone in Lucy's room.
Mac: Was that message light flashing when the officers checked the hotel before?
Garcia: Yeah, figured it wasn't important.
Mac sighs
Mac: Garcia when you are investigating this kind of situation, until you rule it out everything is important.
Mac goes over and retrieves the message he hits the speaker button so they can both hear it. Eve's voice comes on.
Eve: Okay Lucy, you've messed with my life for the last time, you hear me! I'm sick and tired of you trying to come between me and Kevin, and of you helping that Livvie get close to Kevin. You are going to pay!
They hear the phone being slammed down. Mac and Garcia look at each other. Mac quickly checks the date and time of the message.
Mac: Well it was sent the night Lucy was beaten and it appears it was sent not long before Lucy was beaten.
Mac looks at Garcia sharply
Mac: Not important, huh?
Garcia sighs
Garcia: Glad you checked it, I promise to be more thero next time.
Mac: Good. Well, it looks like the case against Eve just went from strong to almost solid. And based on this phone message it looks as if premeditated is the name of the game. We better get this to the DA.
Garcia nods in agreement as they get the tape and leave.

Karen sits nervously in her hotel room waiting to hear how John and Scott's meeting went with Lee. Suddenly there is a knock at the door. Karen rushes over and opens it. She finds a stressed John at the door.
Karen: John! How did it go?
John sighs and comes in.
John: You know, for some reason I honestly thought that I was dealing with understanding, compassionate adults!
Karen sighs
Karen: That good, huh?
John begins pacing.
John: You know Karen, I know Lee Baldwin is your grandfather, and I don't mean to sound disrespectful but...
John shakes his head angrily. Karen takes John's hand and leads him over to the bed and gets him to sit down.
Karen: I know sometimes my Grandfather comes across a little gruff, but what you have to remember is just like you have certain things you are obligated to do so does he. He is the lawyer for GH and because of that he is required to defend the hospital no matter what. He took an oath John and that oath is very important to him.
John: More important then what's right? Karen, he threatened to sue me and my family for slander, and he informed me that if I don't stop talking to the press I'm going to have a restraining order slapped on me barring me from talking to the press. And if I break it I'm going to go to jail!
Karen shakes her head.
Karen: My Dad said it would get dirty.
John: Yeah, I know, I guess I just didn't realize what kind of people I was up against.
John rubs his neck.
Karen: Here let me help you relax.
Karen gets behind him and starts giving him a back rub.
John: Oh that feels good.
Karen smiles
Karen: That's the idea. So, what did my Dad say to all of this?
John: He told Lee that we'd see him in court. That the hospital was wrong to support Devlin when they knew good and well what had happened. He said that we'd win and that's that. Then Lee told him to be prepared for a long trial cause GH wouldn't be giving up easily. To which Scott informed him that if they want to drag it out they are going to find themselves dragged through the mud.
Karen: Wow, sounds like my Dad is ready to go.
John nods
John: Yeah he seemed really confident. He told me not to get discouraged that this was just a scare tactic to send me running and not to worry.
Karen sits back down beside him.
Karen: Well, then I think you shouldn't. My Dad knows what he's doing John. If he feels confident that this is going to work out then you have every reason to believe that it will.
John smiles at her and shakes her head.
John: You really are amazing you know that Karen. To pin your Dad against your grandfather. To go against the place you work. All to help a friend.
Karen smiles
Karen: It's not like the hospital has always been on my side John. Besides what kind of friend would I be if I didn't help.
There is an awkward moment as they look into one another's eyes.
John: Uh it's getting late, I should go.
Karen: Uh yeah, you probably should. I mean, it is late and all.
They get up and got to the door. Karen opens it.
John: Thanks again for everything Karen.
Karen smiles
Karen: Thanks again for saving my life.
John smiles. Then before anything more can be said they lean in for a tender kiss on the lips. Both end the kiss and stare at each other not sure what to do next.
John: Good night Karen.
John backs out and leaves. Karen closes the door still in shock. She brings her fingers to her lips still warm from John's kiss.
Karen: Good night John.

Lucy stairs at Ed uncertainly then back at Rafe.
Lucy: What does he mean, he's the man with all the answers?
Rafe clears his throat.
Rafe: This is my boss Ed. He over sees all the angels up here, and my guess is he's here cause he has news for you.
Lucy: Ed, you have to let me go back down! Kevin, my doc, the love of my life has come back to me, and, and, he's ready to marry me. But, but just as important the wrong person is being accused of trying to kill me. Ed to have an innocent person go to jail is completely unjust. I have to go back, I have to make this right.
Ed nods
Ed: I see, you get as worked up as your cousin does.
Rafe: Come one, Ed. Listen to her, she really does need to go back down.
Ed: Everyone needs to go back down. Everyone has stuff they want to do.
Lucy: So, so what are you saying that I have to stay up here?!
Ed shakes his head.
Ed: On the contrary. My bosses have agreed that you should and will go back.
Lucy: Oh My Gosh thank you!
Lucy throws her arms around Ed and starts kissing him on the cheek repeatedly.
Lucy: Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Ed smiles and looks at her my pleasure.
Lucy: So how do I get out of here?
Rafe: Can I take her back now?
Ed: In a minute you two.
Lucy: I don't understand you said I could go back.
Ed: And you will. But first I need to tell you that you're right. Eve is guilty of recking your hotel room but she did not hurt you, that was someone else.
Lucy: Who?
Ed: I'm afraid I can't tell you that.
Lucy: What do you mean? If you know it wasn't Eve then you must know who it was.
Rafe: Come on Ed you can't seriously be protecting them.
Ed: I'm not protecting anyone. However, there are certain things I am simply not allowed to reveal. Things Lucy must figure out on her own.
He takes Lucy's hands in his.
Ed: Just trust in your instincts, and know you're right.
Lucy: Okay, thank you, I guess.
Ed smiles and nods to Rafe then vanishes. Lucy turns to Rafe.
Lucy: They sure don't make things easy up here do they?
Rafe rolls his eyes
Rafe: Tell me about it. Well, come on Lucy let me get you home.
He escorts Lucy back down the tunnel and soon they are standing in Lucy's hospital room. Kevin and Livvie are sitting on either side of Lucy holding her hands their heads.
Rafe: Well, cousin this is it.
Lucy turns to him.
Lucy: Thank you Rafe, thank you for everything. I wish we could have known each other here on earth.
Rafe nods
Rafe: Me to. But just know I'm always around okay.
Lucy nods
Lucy: Okay.
They hug
Rafe: Ready to go back to your loved ones?
Lucy nods Rafe claps his hands and Lucy is sent back into her body.
Rafe: Good luck cousin.
Rafe claps his hands again and goes back to heave. Kevin strokes Lucy's face lovingly and sighs.
Kevin: Please come back to me Lucy. I need you so much.
Kevin feels Lucy's fingers wrap tightly around his hand.
Kevin: She squeezed my hand!
Livvie leans in.
Livvie: Lucy, Lucy if you can hear me please squeeze my hand.
Lucy squeezes Livvie's hand.
Livvie: Oh My God she heard!
Kevin: Lucy, come on, Lucy open your eyes.
Lucy's non bruised eye flutters open. Kevin and Livvie gasp.
Livvie: She's awake! Oh thank God you're awake!
Kevin starts crying
Kevin: Oh thank God indeed. Oh Lucy I was so scared I thought I'd lost you. I love you so, so much.
Livvie: We both do Lucy, we both do.
Lucy tries to move.
Livvie: Lucy don't move.
Kevin: You're at GH in ICU. You were hurt very badly but you're going to be fine, okay? You have a vent in that's why you can't talk.
Livvie: I better go get Ian. Welcome back Lucy.
Livvie leans in kisses her on the cheek and races out.
Kevin strokes her face and squeezes her hand as tears run down his cheeks.
Kevin: I love you so much.
Lucy takes her free hand points to her eye, then pats her chest, then holds up two fingers. Kevin smiles leans over and kisses her softly.

Chapter Nine

It is the next day, Lucy has been taken off the ventilator and Kevin is sitting by her side holding her hand. Livvie has gone to the recovery room to get Lucy something good to eat.
Kevin: Lucy, you have no idea how scared I was. I, I thought I'd lost you.
Lucy smiles at him and gently touches his face.
Lucy: Oh Doc, you could never lose me.
Kevin smiles
Kevin: Well, I'm glad to hear it. Lucy I am so sorry, I'm sorry for everything. For leaving you at the alter, for letting myself even look at that piece of filth I am so sorry.
Lucy shakes her head.
Lucy: No, Doc. You don't have to apologize, not to me.
Kevin: Yes, I do Lucy. Yes, I do. You are the best thing that ever happened to me. You filled my life with such joy, such love, such peace. And what do I do? I just throw it out the window. And why? Why? Because you made a mistake? I must be the biggest hypocrite in the world. To leave you for something like that. After everything you'd put up with, with me. I had no right. You are a true angel, and I was blessed to have your love. I can only hope you are willing to give me another chance to make this up to you.
Lucy's eyes are filled with tears and love.
Lucy: Oh Kevin. Of course I forgive you, and I'll always love you. I don't blame you for any of this.
Kevin shakes his head.
Kevin: How can you not when...
Lucy shakes her head.
Lucy: Kevin Collins you listen to me. The past is the past. Look, I didn't just make a little mistake, I made a big one. And the fact is I broke your trust. Now, that is a big issue for you, one I should have been more sensitive to.
Kevin: But I..
Lucy: Doc, you couldn't help what you did. You had a nervous break down. I could have helped what I did. The bottom line is we both messed up. But the important thing now is that we're together.
Kevin shakes his head and smiles lovingly at her as he strokes her face.
Kevin: You're amazing you know that? Simply amazing.
Lucy smiles at him lovingly.
Lucy: You're not so bad yourself.
Kevin: I still need to know you forgive me.
Lucy: For what?
Kevin: For getting messed up with that monster. Look, I want you to know she isn't getting away with this, okay? Eve is going to be charged with attempted murder and Dara will push for life in prison with no parol. I will make her pay for what she did to you I swear.
Lucy shakes her head in confusion.
Lucy: Eve? What? Why? Doc what did she do?
Kevin realizes Lucy doesn't know. He holds her hand tightly in his.
Kevin: Lucy, Eve was the one who did this to you.
Lucy: What? No. No, that can't be right.
Kevin: Lucy a hotel clerk saw her at the hotel about the time you were attacked, her bracelet was found in your room, and a threatening message from Eve was found on your answering machine.
Lucy: Wow, that's incriminating, all right.
Kevin: She did it Lucy and she will pay. I've already started the divorce process, Scott is helping out with that. And then we can get married. That is If you want to.
Lucy smiles at him lovingly.
Lucy: Oh, Doc, of course you know I do. But, but this thing with Eve. I, I don't know. I know she's capable of a lot, but Doc I don't think she's the one who did this.
Kevin: Lucy...
Lucy: Kevin listen to me. I am not some shrinking violet okay? I have been in more cat fights then I can count and I've NEVER gotten hurt so bad I had to stay in the hospital even over night. Believe me, I can hold my own.
Kevin: Maybe she snuck up on you.
Lucy: Does she have any injuries?
Kevin: No, but...
Lucy: Look, Doc I know the physical evidence is there, I get that. But my instincts are telling me that it's incorrect.
Kevin sighs.
Kevin: Lucy I love your heart.
Lucy: Doc, this has nothing to do with my heart, I don't give a damn about Eve. But I do care about the right person being brought to justice and I don't think Eve is the right person. I wouldn't have been hurt this bad, she'd have injuries too, and, and I don't know. It just doesn't feel right. No, it wasn't Eve.
Kevin looks at Lucy with concern not sure what to say.
Chris is waiting in the jail waiting room when Eve is brought it.
Chris: Hey Lamburt I got good news for you.
Eve: I'm getting out of here?
Chris: No, Lucy is awake, and she's going to be just fine.
Eve rolls her eyes.
Eve: Oh great, just what I was hoping for.
Chris sighs
Chris: Well it should be. Had she died you would have been charged with murder.
Eve: But I'm innocent! I never touched the B*THCH!
Chris: Would you keep your voice down! Look, you may not have, but between the evidence, your attitude, and the fact that you did ransack her place the case is pretty strong. Now, there is nothing we can do about the evidence, or you ransacking her place, those are facts. But if you would cool the attitude that might help.
Eve: Oh come on! What they have is circumstantial at best!
Chris: NO IT ISN'T EVE, NO IT ISN'T!
Eve is silenced by his out burst.
Chris: Your bracelet being at the scene of a crime is physical evidence, a reputable desk clerk being asked by you for Lucy's room number and seeing you proceed to her room is concrete evidence as well, and a threatening message you left on her answering machine left only hours before the attack? Eve it pretty much seals the deal!
Eve: They, they found the message?
Chris laughs in frustration.
Chris: You thought they wouldn't? Eve, you really need to cut the cocky attitude long enough to look at the situation. You are in very big trouble.
Eve is silent.
Chris: Now look, I know you didn't hurt her. But the problem is because you did ransack her hotel, and there is no evidence pointing to anyone else, well...
Eve: It makes me the only suspect. Great.
Chris: And just for the record, breaking and entering, along with vandalism and destruction of private property are against the law as well.
Eve: You don't have to be so sarcastic with me! I'm not an idiot!
Chris: THEN STOP ACTING LIKE ONE!! Honestly, Eve. I can't decide whether you are in deep denial or just want to be hung out to dry. You're my best friend, and I am doing everything in my power to help you, but you are constantly...
Chris sees Eve's eyes filling with tears. He sighs.
Chris: Look, I'm sorry, okay? I didn't mean to upset you. But Eve you are in real trouble here. And whether you like Lucy or not you need to cut the attitude or you could be spending the rest of your life in jail.
Eve looks at Chris stunned.
Eve: What?
Chris: That's right. Mac, Dara, Scott, and Kevin are all pushing very hard to see you in jail for the rest of your life. And you are doing nothing to help stop them from getting what they want.
Eve snorts
Eve: Kevin wants it to huh, figures.
Chris: Forget about him Eve, think about yourself! Look, I hate to break it to you but Kevin doesn't love you. I'm not sure he ever did. Truth be told I think you were a mid-life crises of some kind. He is with Lucy, he is filing for divorce from you, and he wants to see you pay. So stop hating Lucy, stop pinning away for Kevin, and help me help you!
Eve: What do you want me to do!
Chris sighs
Chris: Tomorrow after the bail hearing I'm going to arrange for you to have an interview with the Port Charles Herald. Now, in this interview I want you to do some of your best acting ever. I'll give you all the coaching you need. But you're going to have to do the rest.
Eve: And what am I supposed to say? That I love Lucy?
Chris shakes his head.
Chris: No, of course not. Everyone would know that it was fake then. But what you are going to say is how horrible you feel for her and her loved ones. That while you've never been friends, you would never wish such a thing on anyway. That you are so sorry she was hurt like that, and that you are happy to hear she is doing well. She will say that you hope the person who truly did this is brought to justice because no one deserves to be hurt like that. You are going to talk about how you're a doctor, and how you believe all human life is precious.
Eve: OH gag me.
Chris: Eve, do you want me to help or not? Cause you keep this up, and I'm walking.
Eve: You wouldn't.
Chris: If you tie my hands so tightly that I have no choice I will.
Eve: All right, all right. So what am I supposed to say about the evidence, huh?
Chris sighs
Chris: Jackson and I were up all night talking about that one. And we think your best bet is to be honest about what happened.
Eve: WHAT!!
Chris: Look, Eve, they can prove you were there, and they can probably prove you were the one who ransacked her place. If you deny it, then the jury will have no reason to believe you didn't try to kill her. We can't erase the evidence they have. And we can't disprove your guilt either. The fact is you are guilty of breaking and entering, and of ransacking her place. Our best bet is to admit that you did indeed ransack her place, but that you had no part in hurting her. We do anything else and the odds are you'll be convicted of attempted murder.
Eve: But if I confess I'll go to jail!
Chris: It's up to you, life in prison for a crime you didn't commit, or a few years for a crime you did. And, for the record we might be able to keep you out of jail if you confess. It's possible you could get a large fine, and community service.
Eve: How possible.
Chris: I'm not sure. But I'll tell you one thing it will be impossible if you don't confess. If we show you to be honest, to be willing to take responsibility for your actions we got a shot other wise...
Chris shakes his head.
Eve: Prison stripes.
Chris nods
Chris: Pretty much.
Eve: Okay, okay. I'll confess to what I did do, but I won't confess to trying to kill her cause I didn't!
Chris: I know. And we don't want you to, okay? Tomorrow, you will plead guilty to breaking and entering, and destruction of private property. But you will plead innocent to assault and attempted murder. Okay?
Eve sighs.
Eve: And how am I supposed to sound all good to the interviewer then?
Chris: You're not supposed to sound all good, just like someone who would never resort to physical violence.
Eve sighs and shakes her head doubtfully.
Chris takes her hands in his.
Chris: Trust me Eve, this is our best chance.
Eve looks up at him with trying to hide her fear.
Eve: Okay, okay. I'll do whatever you say.
Jill is working at the nurses station when a delivery man walks up.
Man: Are you Jill Garnet?
Jill takes a deep breath not sure about what is coming next.
Jill: Yes I am. How may I help you?
Man: I have a delivery here for you.
Jill signs and the man hands her two dozen long stemmed red roses with a note. Gabriella walks over.
Gabriella: Wow, I hope those are from Frank, or he's got some Serious competition.
Jill laughs.
Jill: I'm sure they are from him.
Denise: Oh Girl, now those are some nice looking flowers.
Maggie: Well, lets here it. What does the note say?
Jill blushes as she opens the note.
Jill: Dear Jill
Sorry about the rocky start at dinner. It was great having you there. I want you to know how much I enjoy your company, and how hopeful I am that what we have will continue to grow.
Frank.
Maggie: Well, you and Frank are sure hitting it off nicely.
Denise: So, I guess, you do have a life to live. and it sounds like Frank wants to be part of it.
Gabriella: Big part of it.
They all laugh
Jill: Okay guys, come on. Look things are good okay. Yes, Frank is a wonderful man, and yes we are very close. But, but that doesn't mean anything.
The girls moan.
Jill: No, look. I'm not saying I don't want it to move forward okay? Yes, I do. And I admit it could. But, but right now we're taking it slow you know. And I think that's good for both of us. I mean, we've both been burned before we don't want to jump into this to quickly. Yes, we have feelings for each other. But I don't know how strong his are, or even how strong mine are. And I really just want to take this one step at a time.
Courtney saunters up.
Courtney: Getting ready to infect someone else?
Gabriella: Hey, Courtney, unless you want to get infected with a fat lip I suggest you take a hike.
Courtney: Temper, temper. It's no one that big oath Joe likes you.
Gabriella: Why you little.
Gabriella starts to go towards Courtney but Jill grabs her arm.
Jill: Courtney, why are you here? Do you need something?
Denise: She needs to leave.
Jill: Hey, guys lets not sink to her level, okay? Courtney, what do you want?
Courtney laughs
Courtney: Oh so now you're trying to be miss proper. Hey does Mary know you are boonking Frank.
Gabriella: That's it!
Mary: I know nothing of the kind.
Everyone turns and sees Mary coming up to Courtney.
Mary: What I do know, however is that Jill is as much a victim in this as Joe is. And that Jill is making Frank happier then you ever did. Because Jill has a soul.
Courtney starts to protest.
Mary: Now you have a choice, Courtney. You can either say or do whatever it is you came to say or do and then leave, leave now on your own, or keep this up and have security throw you out. So what will it be.
Everyone stairs at Mary a tad surprised.
Courtney: So, does Qourtermaine know how rude his nurses are! Well, I think he should know!
Courtney storms off.
Gabriella: That little.....
Jill: You don't think she'll really go to Qourtermaine do you?
Denise: For what? If she does she's going to have to explain how it all happened, and she's not going to want to make herself look bad.
Maggie: Yeah that news article did a lot of damage.
Mary: And considering Alan knows who was responsible for it, I highly doubt he'd even be interested enough to listen to her.
Jill: Mary, thank you. I mean, you really didn't have to do that.
Mary: I wanted. I was out of line last night. And for the record you do make Frank happy, very happy.
Jill smiles Mary walks away.
Joe and Frank are having lunch down in the hospital cafeteria.
Frank: Listen, I'm sorry about last night. You know I didn't mean to insult you.
Joe: Hey, no harm done. Besides you were right to be upset. Mom had no right talking about Jill like that. I know if Gabby's family talked about me that way she'd give them hell. And you made a good point. In the past I have pretty much given Mom free rain when it comes to her opinions about the people in my life. I think that was one of the big problems with me and Karen. I didn't stand by her enough. Not like you stood by Jill last night. But I'm not going to make that mistake twice.
Frank nods
Frank: Good to hear. Gabriella is a great girl she deserves no less.
Joe nods
Joe: Yeah. She's amazing and I will never let her stand alone. Just like I know you won't with Jill.
Frank nods
Frank: Yeah.
Joe: Everything okay?
Frank: You know, when I first took Jill to lunch all I wanted was friendship. And even when we kind of started dating, I thought okay I can handle this. But now...
Joe: But now?
Frank looks at Joe seriously
Frank: I'm falling in love with her Joe. And it scares the hell out of me.
Joe nods
Joe: You haven't exactly been lucky at love. And I guess with Jill it's even scarier.
Frank: You know, I used to think that the worst part about relationships were the unknowns but with this one...
Joe: You know, she is healthy. I mean, this may not become an issue for years and years.
Frank: I know that. And it's not something I like dwelling on. Or like for her to dwell on. But it's there you know. In the back of my head it's there. I look at her and this voice says, she's sick, she could die.
Joe nods
Joe: Well, we're all going to die. And now with the treatments available the truth is her future is no more uncertain then any of ours.
Frank nods.
Frank: I want to make her happy, Joe. I want to fill her life with so much joy. More joy then she's ever had.
Joe smiles
Joe: Well based on her attitude lately and the look in her eyes, I'd say you're well on your way to accomplishing that.
Frank: I hope.
Joe: Does she make you happy?
Frank nods
Frank: Very. She is so easy to be with, and to talk to. And we understand each other so well.
Joe: Well then just focus on the here and now. As I said the way things stand now with HIV, you guys don't have a real time limit here. You could very easily have decades.
Frank smiles
Frank: That sounds nice.
Just then Frank's cell phone rings.
Frank: Hello?
Jill: Hi there.
Frank smiles
Frank: Hey, I was just thinking about you.
Jill smiles
Jill: What a coincidence. I was just thinking about you two.
Frank: Really.
Jill: Frank, thank you so much for these flowers. They are gorgeous.
Frank: I'm glad you like them.
Jill: I love them. And the note was so sweet. I have an invitation for you. Would you like to come over to my place tomorrow night for dinner?
Frank smiles
Frank: Tomorrow night sounds great. I'm looking forward to it.
Jill: Same here. Okay, then. I'll talk to you later.
Frank: Okay see you.
They hang up Frank smiles.
Frank: She's cooking dinner for us tomorrow night.
Joe smiles
Joe: Well, just keep on living in the moment and you'll do fine.
Frank nods.
Frank: Words to live by.
Karen and John are both in their respective hotel rooms thinking of the kiss they shared.
Karen: I can't believe he kissed me. But, but that's as far as I can let it go. I don't want to lose another friend like this.
John: I can't believe I kissed her. What am I some kind of Idiot! I mean, sure she's wonderful, but she's also my friend. I do not want to screw that up. Love and friendship don't mix.
Karen: And besides, I'm really to busy for a relationship right now. I mean, I'm a resident, a recovering addict, and now with having to partly re build my apartment? No, I have way to much going on.
John: The last thing I have time for is a relationship. I have to focus on getting my family their money. Besides I'm not even staying in Port Charles. I have a life to get back to, a career that's on indefinite hold right now. No, I'm to busy for this.
Karen: I mean, not that I'm not attracted to him. He's smart, sweet, honest, brave, generous, just an all around great guy.
John: Okay, yes I am attracted to her. But who wouldn't be? She's smart, sweet, brave, generous, just a wonderful girl.
Karen: Stop this Karen you aren't ready for this!
John: Come on, John you are not up for this.
Karen: Well, I guess I could be.
John: I mean, I suppose I could handle it.
Karen: There are harder things.
John: I can think of worse things then dating an incredible woman.
They both reach for the phone.
Karen: What am I talking about? For all I know he has someone.
Karen hangs up.
John: Who am I kidding? She probably has someone.
John hangs up.
They both stair longingly at the phone.

It is now the next morning and everyone is gathering at the courtroom for Eve's bail hearing. Mac and Kevin are talking quietly.
Mac: So let me get this straight. Even with all the evidence, Lucy is convinced that Eve didn't beat her up?
Kevin nods
Kevin: That's right. She says Eve wouldn't have been able to hurt her as badly, and would have had injuries to if she had.
Mac: Well isn't it possible Eve snuck up behind her, knocked her out, and then beat her?
Kevin sighs
Kevin: That's what I told her. Believe me Mac I've spent the last 24 hours trying to convince her that she's wrong. But you know Lucy. Once she's made up her mind about something.
Mac: She doesn't let go.
Kevin: Exactly. She says her instincts are telling her Eve is innocent of beating her up. You don't think that will hurt the case do you?
Mac: No I doubt it. There is so much physical evidence. And since we have witnesses that can place her at the scene of the crime I doubt it will affect anything. Between the bracelet, the threatening message, the desk clerk, and the animosity those two have had between each other. Well, Eve is as good as convicted if you ask me.
Kevin: But what if Lucy gets on the stand and says she thinks Eve is innocent?
Mac sighs
Mac: Well, it's not necessary for the victim to take the stand given all the evidence, so Dara may choose not to call her. On the other hand it may actually help.
Kevin: How?
Mac: Well, if everyone sees what a caring and forgiving person Lucy is they are going to be even more angered by what happened to her. And since all the evidence points to Eve...
Kevin: They'll go ahead and convict.
Mac: Hopefully.
Kevin: You think bail will be high?
Mac: Yeah, but with Chris on her side she'll probably be able to post it.
Kevin groans.
Mac: Look we have restraining orders against her going anywhere near Lucy, and I've put two guards outside Lucy's door just in case.
Kevin nods
Kevin: Good. I'm going to take sometime off work anyway, so I can be with her. I've also gotten a court order to throw Eve out of the light house. That's Lucy's home I don't want Eve anywhere near it.
Mac smiles
Mac: Well, that's going to make bail a little harder. No, place to stay, no bail.
Kevin smiles
Kevin: Really?
Mac: Lets just hope Chris doesn't come to the rescue.
Kevin nods in agreement. Just then the bailiff walks in.
Bailiff: Will everyone please rise for the honorable Judge Corpen.
Everyone stands as the judge enters.
Everyone is now seated as the Judge has taken his seat.
Judge: We are here to decide on bail in the case of the state verses Dr. Eve Collins.
Kevin mutters
Kevin: Not for long she won't be.
Judge: Would the defended please rise.
Jackson and Eve stand. Eve glances behind her where Chris give her a reassuring smile. She takes a deep breath as everyone watches her.
Judge: On the charge of breaking and entering how do you plead?
Eve takes another deep breath.
Eve: Guilty.
The courtroom erupts in whispers. The Judge bangs his gavel.
Judge: Order in the court. On the Charge of vandalism and destruction of private property how do you plead?
Eve swallows hard and takes a side glance at Chris. He smiles back at her and nods.
Eve: Guilty.
Again everyone starts whispering.
Mac leans over to Kevin and whispers.
Mac: This could be easier then we thought. There may not even be a need for a trial.
Kevin: I guess Eve knows she's been caught.
Judge: On the charge of assault how do you plead?
Eve looks at the Judge with determination.
Eve: Not guilty.
The courtroom erupts with whispers again.
Judge: This court room will come to order. On the charge of attempted murder how do you plead?
Eve: Not guilty.
Mac: Guess I spoke to soon.
Kevin: What the hell is she up to?
Mac: If I had to guess? They are going to try and prove she's only responsible for part of this. There by giving her a lessor sentence.
Kevin: That's out rages. Who else would hurt Lucy like that.
Mac: Don't worry Dara's good, and they are going to have a heck of a time proving she didn't do it.
Kevin: I hope you're right.
Judge: Since you have plead guilty to two of the crimes we will set a date for your sentencing after your trial for assault and attempted murder.
Kevin: What?! How can they do that?
Mac: Take it easy Kevin. They really want to get her on the big ones, and since the state has a strong case there is no need to rush anything. Like I said she hasn't made bail yet, and I've got guards who will be watching Lucy like a hawk.
Kevin: And I will be watching her too. I'm not about to let that monster anywhere near Lucy.
Mac nods.
Judge: Now on to the matter of bail.
Dara jumps up.
Dara: Your honor the defendant's husband has filed for divorce and has filed a motion for his wife to be barred from their home permanently. That motion was granted earlier this morning.
Eve turns in shock and looks at Kevin who stairs at her with such hate Eve shutters. Chris leans forward.
Chris: Don't think about him, just focus on what's going on.
Eve nods and turns back to the judge.
Dara: Because of this, the defendant would have no where to stay if she was released. There for the state asks that bail be denied.
Eve: No!
Chris stands up.
Chris: Your honor. My name is Dr. Christopher Ramsey, I live at 224 State's Vill Road in the pent house. I am a good friend of the defendants as well as an upstanding citizen.
Kevin mutters
Kevin: Since when.
Chris: If bail is granted she can stay with me and I will take full responsibility for her attendance here.
Judge nods
Judge: Mrs. Collins is that all right with you?
Eve nods
Eve: Yes. Yes, of course.
Judge: Now Mr. Ramsey you do understand that if the defendant skips town you will be held accountable and will face jail time?
Chris: Yes sir. You have my word I will make sure the defendent comes to court.
Judge nods.
Judge: Since the defendant has a place to stay I see know reason for bail to not be granted.
Kevin mutters.
Kevin: How about the safety of others.
Judge: I do however feel the crimes are big enough to require a large bail. There for I'm setting bail at 3 million dollars.
Eve turns and look at Chris who smiles and nods
Chris: I got it covered you're leaving with me, it's okay.
Eve smiles mouths thank you and turns back to the judge.
Dara: Your honor for reason of public safety I'd like to request that this trial is started as soon as possible.
Jackson: You're honor the defense team is entitled to proper time to prepare.
The judge nods.
Judge: The trial will begin, three weeks from today.
Eve turns to Jackson worriedly
Eve: Is that enough time.
Jackson nods
Jackson: We'll make it enough time.
Judge: This court now stands adjourned.
Everyone rises. Kevin practically jumps over people to get to Eve. He gets right in her face.
Kevin: I have never hated anyone, as much as I hate you at this very moment. You are an evil, scheming, selfish, self absorbed, cruel, murderous B*tch! And it makes me absolutely ill to think I ever looked at you, much less touched you! We are getting a divorce and I am going to make sure you get nothing! You are also never going to get near the light house again. And if by some miracle you do get off? I am going to make it my life's mission to make your life a living hell. YOU GOT THAT!
Kevin storms off with Mac right behind him. Eve stands there dumb founded, her fists clenching, her jaw going ridged and hot tears forming in her eyes. Chris jumps in front of her at this moment.
Chris: Hey, come on. Don't let him get to you.
Chris hugs her tightly.
Chris: We are going to prove you are innocent and make Kevin eat his words okay?
Eve: I really thought he loved me.
Chris sighs
Chris: You know, Eve. If he can turn his heart off to you that quickly. well he's not good enough for you. Come on, lets go right that check so we can get you out of here.
Chris puts his arm around Eve and they leave.
Across the street from the court house a man with binoculars watches from his car as Chris, and Jackson hustle Eve through an onslot of reporters into Chris's car. The man then gets out his cell phone and dials a number.
Voice: Hello?
Man: Well, you were right. Ramsey got her sprung.
The voice scoffs.
Voice: Of course I was right. I assume she plead inocent to assult and attempted murder?
Man: And guilty to breaking and entering, as well as destruction of private property.
Voice: Splended. Now all the pieces are right where we need them.
Man: So what's the next move?
Voice: Well, with Lucy's intuitive nature, we don't need anyone else snooping around. So, I think it will be nessisary to give Ramsey a good distraction. That way there will be one less person trying to figure out the truth. Then while Ramsey is distracted we move in for the kill. And poor little Eve gets sent up the river for good.
He laughs evily.
Man: What kind of a distraction?
Voice: You leave that to me. But trust me with what I've got planned it's going to be hard for Chris to know what direction to run.
He hangs up and looks at a picture of Eve.
Voice: No one says no to me, no one.
He throws the picture into the fire place where the picture begins to burn.

It is now early evening. Karen is about to enter the Recover Room when she sees John about to enter.
Karen: Hi John.
John turns and seeing Karen quickly goes over to her.
John: Hey Karen. I didn't expect to see you out.
Karen: Yeah. Well, I was feeling good and was getting a bad case of cabin fever so I decided to get something to eat.
John: I'm glad you're feeling good.
Karen smiles
Karen: Well it's all thanks to you.
There is an awkward silence.
Karen: Uh John
John: Karen.
They both laugh
John: You first
Karen: You first.
They laugh again.
John: No I insist ladies first.
Karen: About the other night.
John: Yeah. Uh I've been thinking a lot about that.
Karen: Same here. It, it...
John: Look, Karen, I never meant to make you feel uncomfortable or anything okay.
Karen: Oh you, you didn't. Not at all.
John: Oh, good, good.
Karen: Look, I don't blame you if you regret kissing me, I mean...
John: I don't. I mean, I well, I actually kind of liked it.
Karen smiles
Karen: Yeah I liked it to.
John: You did?
Karen nods
Karen: Yeah, I, I just wasn't sure how you felt about it. I mean, there was so much going on, I can understand if your emotions just got the better of you.
John: No, no. I wanted to kiss you.
Karen: Oh.
John: Yeah. Look, I'm sorry. You probably have someone don't you. I don't want to screw up our friendship and I hope..
Karen: John I don't have anyone.
John: Oh. So...
Karen laughs
Karen: So...
John: Would you like to have dinner with me?
Karen: Well, we are both here. Sure why not.
Karen smiles at him. John extends his hand she places her hand in his and they go into the recovery room together.

Jill is busy putting the finishing touches on dinner when the door bell rings. Jill looks at her watch and smiles
Jill: Right on time, as usual.
Jill opens the door and finds Frank smiling at her.
Frank: Hello there.
Jill smiles unable to hide her happiness at seeing him.
Jill: Hello.
Frank: These are for you.
Frank hands her a dozen red roses. Jill laughs.
Jill: Frank I love roses, but you don't have to get me roses everytime you see me.
Frank smiles
Frank: I know. But I just so happy to like the way your face lights up when you get them. besides the others were to make up the rocky start we had at dinner the other night. These are simply something nice for you to enjoy in your apartment.
Jill smiles and shakes her head.
Frank: Oh and this is to go with our dinner tonight.
Frank hands her a bottle. Jill sighs, a bit disappointedly
Jill: Frank you know I
Frank: Can't drink alcohol because of your HIV medicine. Which is why I brought sparkling grape juice.
Frank smiles Jill looks again at the bottle and laughs half at herself. She looks over at Ruth resting on the couch.
Jill: Ruth have I found prince charming or what?
Ruth: Rough!
They both laugh. Jill puts the grape juice in an ice bucket to chill.
Jill: Here let me take your coat. So how was your day?
Frank: It was good. Had a run in with Ramsey but that's nothing new.
Jill shakes her head.
Jill: I don't understand how they can let such unfeeling people be doctors.
She smiles and wraps her arms around Frank's neck.
Jill: Good thing those patients have you around.
Frank blushes.
Frank: Well, I don't know. I do the best I can but...
Jill: No buts. I've seen you in action Scanlon and you are the best.
Frank: You think so huh?
Jill smiles
Jill: I know so.
She gives him a quick kiss. The timer on the oven then goes off.
Jill: Oh great dinner is ready.
Jill runs to the kitchen.
Frank: So how was your day?
Jill: It was good. Fairly uneventful. I only had one patient refuse to let me treat them, so I guess that's progress.
Frank shakes his head angrily.
Frank: Damn ignorant fools. You shouldn't have to put up with such garbage Jill. You are so above those people.
Jill: I don't want to talk about it. All I want to do is focus on us, and dinner okay?
Frank smiles
Frank: You wish is my command. So what's for dinner?
Jill: Spinach sailed with pairs, blue cheese, and almonds, and garlic bread. Then stuffed shells with ricotta cheese. And for dessert Tiramiso.
Frank: Smells and sounds wonderful.
They sit down to eat.
Frank: I can't believe you made this huge meal, after working all day. I hope you know I wasn't expecting all of this.
Jill smiles
Jill: It's no big deal really. I love to cook. It's a creative out lit for me.
Frank smiles
Frank: Well I love what you've created.
Jill smiles happy to see him happy.
Jill: Well that's the idea.
Frank: I actually like to cook to.
Jill: Really?
Frank: Yeah. I learned when I was young. See, my Dad didn't want to have anything to do with cooking, or anything else having to do with caring for us, and well Mom worked very long hours to support us. So since I was the oldest I had to learn. I just kind of taught myself to make things. I have gotten pretty good at figuring out recipes just by tasting something.
Jill nods.
Jill: I'm kind of surprised you enjoy it given how you learned.
Frank shrugs
Frank: For a long time I didn't. But then I saw how much people were enjoying what I made and I really started taking pride in that. And the more I did it the better I got at it. So I enjoy it. You know seeing people enjoy what you make is so rewarding.
Jill nods in agreement.
Jill: I agree. There is nothing like pouring your heart into a meal and seeing people just devour it.
Frank: Yep. So how about you? How did you get started cooking?
Jill: Well, I grew up in a house with three brothers, my father, and my grandfather. They all believed a woman's place was in the kitchen. My Mom didn't enjoy cooking, and wasn't a good cook anyway. So as soon as I was old enough to read, my mother put me to work in the kitchen.
Frank: Doesn't sound like your experience was all that much better.
Jill sighs
Jill: No I guess it wasn't. I resented it for a while. But as time went on it was one of the few places I could find real peace. And I was good at it, and it was the one thing I did that was appreciated. So I learned to love it. Once I moved out I started really experimenting and discovered what a true art it is.
Frank nods in agreement. Just then a beeper on Jill's watch goes off, and a strange look passes over her face.
Jill: Excuse me.
Jill races out of the room. Frank sighs knowing what's going on. He gets up and goes into her bedroom. She is sitting on the side of her bed with several pill bottles. He goes over and sits beside her.
Jill: Frank please...
Frank: Jill, I care about you. And I want to be there for you, okay? Not just for the good stuff, but for all the stuff.
He takes her hand.
Frank: You aren't alone anymore, Jill. And you will never be again.
Tears well up in Jill's eyes.
Jill: Even if I got sick? Then what Frank?
Frank: Then I'd sit right by your side and do whatever it took to help you. I'd be there for you no matter what.
Jill shakes her head in amazement.
Jill: You are truly one of a kind Frank Scanlon.
Frank: Jill, all I am is a man that cares about you. I'm here for you, and I want to be a part of your life,
Frank picks up one of the bottles.
Frank: And unfortunately this is part of it. Now, I'll get you some water, so you can take these pills and we can get back to that wonderful dinner.
Frank kisses her cheek and goes to get her a glass of water.
Jill smiles shakes her head looks up and mouths
Jill: Thank you, God, thank you.
