Surprises

"Pregnant?" Lucy repeated after a long silence as she stared blankly at her friend. "Ellen, did you just say that I'm pregnant?"

"That's what the test results say." Ellen replied watching the color draining from Lucy's face. "Are you alright?"

"I just don't believe........" Lucy trailed off not knowing what to say as she stood up and began pacing around the room. "I mean I guess that I had the symptoms, but I just attributed it to the fact that I was stressed out from everything that had taken place between Kevin walking out on our wedding day and everything that Scott and I had gone through in Florida. My cycle had been off, but........"

"Lucy, I had my suspicions the day that you passed out and that's why I ran the test, but I didn't know how to approach you with the results considering the delicacy of situation at hand." Ellen continued watching Lucy's hand involuntarily move to her abdomen as she continued to pace.

"I just can't believe that I didn't piece it together....." Lucy trailed off not listening to Ellen as she moved about. "Things just weren't regular after the miscarriage, but now you're saying that it's really happening. I'm really having a baby Ellen."

"Yes you are Lucy." Ellen replied taking note of the tears forming in Lucy's eyes as Ellen reached out to hug her.

"Ellen, this is everything that I've always wanted and I think deep down I knew what was going on inside of me all this time, but I was too afraid to admit it." Lucy whispered choking back on her tears as her thoughts suddenly drifted to Kevin and Scott. "Oh God Ellen, do you know what this means?"

"I realize this is a difficult time for you Lucy." Ellen began reading her friend's mind.

"How am I going to tell Scott?" Lucy questioned slumping down into a chair once more. "What am I going to tell Kevin?"

"You have to tell them both about this Lucy." Ellen explained seeing how torn up Lucy was. "They need to know the truth."

"I know that." Lucy replied in a whisper. "You know, I knew that someone was going to get hurt in all of this, but I never imagined that it would be like this. Oh God, what have I done Ellen? I'm about to hurt someone who is very special to me."

"Maybe it's better this way Lucy." Ellen tried assuring her as she sat across from her. "Maybe this was a sign about things."

"Ellen, this pregnancy is everything that I've been hoping for, but knowing that I'm going to break one man's heart is going to kill me. I feel like such an awful person for hurting him like this Ellen. It's bad enough that I've been leading them both on for the last couple weeks."

"Lucy, you're not a bad person." Ellen assured her as she gave her a hug. "They're both going to understand, but right now I don't want you worrying about this too much. Considering what you've just been through, it wouldn't do you or this pregnancy any good if you put any more stress upon yourself."

"You're right." Lucy agreed straightening herself up in her chair. "I think that I should probably get this out in the open as soon as possible."

"Lucy, where are you going?" Ellen questioned watching her move towards the door.

"I'm going to talk to Kevin. I need to tell him the truth right away." Lucy explained determined to reveal the news to him.

"Knock-knock." Eve smiled tapping on Kevin's door as she peeked into his office. "Hey stranger, can I come in?"

"Oh Eve, hi." Kevin replied glancing up from the paper work in front of him as she stepped inside his office leaving the door open behind her.

"I was worried about you after you disappeared last night." Eve explained taking a seat across from him. "I called you this morning, but I must've missed you."

"Yeah, I was going to call you back, but something came up." Kevin responded closing the folder in front of him that he had been thumbing through for the past hour as his thoughts ran wild about the phone message for Lucy that he had heard.

"That's okay, I'll forgive you this time." Eve teased leaning back in her chair with a sigh. "I suppose that since it was for a good cause, I'll let you get away with it. So did you find out anything from Garcia?"

"Garcia?" Kevin questioned in confusion. "Oh well other than the radio show scheduled for this afternoon, he didn't have much to say to me."

"Radio show? What about last night?" Eve questioned eyeing him closely.

"Last night?" Kevin repeated.

"Yeah, Victor said that Garcia found a lead in the case and the two of you were going to check it out." Eve continued taking note of the dark expression on Kevin's face as he looked away from her. "Kevin, what is it?"

"Eve, I didn't meet Garcia last night." Kevin explained gazing up at her for a moment before directing his attention back to his desk.

"Now I'm confused." Eve replied with a frown. "Just what are you trying to tell me Kevin?"

"I spent the night with Lucy." Kevin confessed sadly as he glanced at the photograph of Lucy and Sigmund on the corner of his desk.

"Lucy? But........." Eve trailed off thinking it over for a moment. "You spent the night with Lucy?"

"Victor and Luke set it up so that Lucy and I would meet each other unknowingly." Kevin explained to her with a sigh. "They locked the two of us in the storage building behind the party and we were sort of forced to deal with things and face the issues between us head on instead of running away from them."

"And?" Eve questioned curiously leaning on the edge of her seat. "What happened?"

"Well......." Kevin trailed off thinking about making love to Lucy for a moment as Eve waited for a response.

"Say no more, that look on your face says it all Kevin." Eve grinned noticing the look in his eyes as he fell deeper into his memory. "You two are together again, huh?"

"Eve, it's not that simple." Kevin began as the memory faded away and was replaced with the message on the answering machine.

"Kevin, you just spent the night talking to Lucy about everything and judging by the look you just had on your face, I'd have to say that things must've went pretty well. The question is why are you so glum now?" Eve asked thinking back to the party.

"Well........." Kevin started not knowing how to break the news to her.

"Wait a second!" Eve gasped as it all came to her. "You were with Lucy last night."

"Yes, but...." Kevin began again.

"That means that you and Lucy are together again working things through." Eve continued excitedly as she thought of her conversation with Scott.

"That was what we intended upon doing, but......" Kevin interrupted as Eve stood up smiling brightly.

"Kevin if you and Lucy are together again, then it means that Scott and I have a chance." Eve announced brightly as she looked at Kevin. "You know just this morning I ran into him and Serena in the lobby and he seemed to have that look in his eyes........like maybe he still had feelings for me."

"Eve," Kevin started standing up.

"Kevin, this all makes sense now. You should've seen him last night at the party. He kept trying to talk to me and tell me something, but I kept blowing him off." Eve informed Kevin as she thought of the encounter. "He must've been trying to tell me that he still has feelings for me Kevin."

"Eve, before you get your hopes up, I think that there's something you should know." Kevin continued taking in a deep breath.

"Kevin, you don't have to give me a warning because I know that Scott and I have a lot to work out before we ever get back to the point where we were, but if you and Lucy can start over again after all that's happened, then maybe Scott and I will have the same chance to........"

"Eve, Lucy's pregnant." Kevin blurted out pained as he said the words out loud.

Lucy walked through the hallways of General Hospital preparing to tell Kevin the news about her pregnancy. She felt knots in her stomach forming as she thought of how she was going to break the news to him. She paused for a moment to think it over as she glanced at her reflection staring back at her in the glass window of the room adjacent to the hallway as she took a deep breath realizing that he announcement was going to change everything.

"Doc," she began clearing her throat, "you know how I promised to never keep secrets from you again, well..........No that'll never do......Hey Doc, guess what......you'll never believe what I heard today."

"I have to think of the right way to say this." Lucy whispered to herself as she began smoothing her hair. "Doc, hey, I missed you and just thought I'd drop by to pay you a visit at work....oh, and by the way I'm pregnant. No, that's not right either. Doc, guess what. You and I are having a baby. We're having a baby."

"Our baby." Lucy thought to herself as she placed her hand over her abdomen as she realized that she was standing in front of the nursery. She watched as one of the nurse's picked up a small infant to take it to it's mother for feeding. She felt a sense of happiness wash over her as she thought of how soon she and Kevin would be sharing in the joy of bringing a new life into the world together.

Suddenly her thoughts were interrupted by the sounds of soft crying. Her eyes grew wide as she watched a young mother picking up her child and whispering to it softly. Lucy's eyes filled up with tears realizing that soon she'd be blessed with her own little miracle.

"Your daddy's going to be so happy when he finds out about you." She whispered rubbing her stomach for a moment.

"Did you hear the latest on Dr. Lambert?" A voice called out as Lucy turned around to see two nurses heading towards her.

"No, what has she done now?" the second nurse questioned curiously. "Did she murder someone else?"

"Not that I know of." the first nurse snickered. "Although, I'll bet she'll be on a couple of hit lists after what I heard about her."

"Well, are you going to tell me or keep me in suspense all afternoon?" the second nurse questioned as Lucy leaned in closer to listen.

"She's now dating Dr. Collins." the first nurse announced.

"No!" the second gasped.

"Yes, they went to that Halloween party together last night and I even heard that they're sleeping together." the first nurse continued seriously.

"That's unbelievable," the second nurse gasped, "boy does she work fast! Man, does Dr. Collins need his head examined. His taste in women is horrible."

"Tell me about it. First he almost married that home wrecker Lucy Coe and now he's involved with a murderer. That man needs a good talking to or perhaps a dose of his own psychotherapy." the first nurse laughed.

"Well consider his history though," the second nurse continued, "his brother was a real nut job and his father was loony too. It's only inevitable that a man like him would crack a couple times in his life Allison."

"Yeah, well wasn't stalking Felicia Scorpio enough?" Allison snickered with a wink. "Hey a couple dates with me and he'd be cured of any and all problems he's having."

"You're terrible." the other woman laughed as Lucy remained facing the nursery.

Lucy watched as the two women walked down the hallway cackling away about Kevin. She shook her head in disbelief unwilling to let their gossip affect her, but she couldn't help but wonder if there was any truth to their nonsense as she remembered seeing Kevin and Eve together at the Halloween party.

"Nah, " she shrugged shaking her head, "Kevin's too smart to fall for any of Eve's tricks. He never would've been with her like that especially since he loves me."

"I don't believe this." Eve gasped feeling as if the wind was knocked out of her as Kevin's words sank in.

"Eve, I'm so sorry to be the one to break this to you, but I just thought that you should know before you started planning a future with Scott." Kevin replied trying to hold his emotions inward as Eve stared up at him blankly.

"I just thought that Scott and I...........oh God, how could I be so stupid?" Eve questioned with tears in her eyes as Kevin pulled her to him for a hug.

"It's going to be alright Eve." Kevin whispered trying to assure himself as he spoke to her.

"It's just not fair........." she trailed off looking into Kevin's sad eyes. "Oh Kevin, I've been acting so selfish. This must be killing you."

"I'm trying to deal with this the best way that I can...." Kevin began glancing her over as he took a step back. "Oh who am I kidding? I don't know what I'm going to do Eve."

"Kevin, I'm so sorry." Eve replied placing a shoulder on his arm as he turned his back to her.

"It's now or never." Lucy whispered to herself as she stood outside of Kevin's door taking in one last breath before she told him the news. She moved forward noticing that his door was open a crack and she reached for the door knob hearing muffled sounds from inside the office.

"What am I going to do now Eve?" Kevin's voice rang out as Lucy peered into his office. "I promised Lucy forever last night and now I'm not sure of anything anymore."

"Kevin, I can't believe that one mistake could chance all of out lives like this forever. Who'd have thought that............that...........oh God, I promised myself that I wouldn't cry........" Eve trailed off as the hot tears burned her cheeks as Kevin reached out to hug her as Lucy fought the urge to rush in and pull Eve away from 'her Doc'. "I almost believed that there could be a chance for Scott and I if I could just let go of all that's happened during the time he and I were apart. I never planned on this baby coming along Kevin."

"None of us did Eve." Kevin replied holding her tighter as he fought back the pain her was feeling. "I guess the only thing left for us to do is move forward. I just don't know how I'm going to break this to Lucy."

"Kevin, I'm so sorry. I wish that I could take back that day.........." Eve began looking up at him for a moment before pulling him close to her.

"Well, get through this together." Kevin assured her as Lucy took a step back taking in everything she had just heard.

"Eve and a baby?" Lucy thought to herself as the nurse's words came back to haunt her.

"........they went to that Halloween party together last night and I even heard that they're sleeping together......"

"No," Lucy gasped watching Kevin and Eve sharing the moment alone together. "She can't be having Doc's baby. She just can't."

Lucy remained motionless for a few minutes as everything sunk in. She felt her heart break in two realizing that Kevin and Eve had been more than friends while they were apart. With tears streaming down her face, she took a step backward. Gasping for air, Lucy found herself running towards the exit needing to go somewhere to think far away from Kevin and Eve.

"Hey beautiful," Scott called out as she passed by him. Noticing how upset she looked, he followed after her. "Lucy! Lucy, wait up!"

"Scott, I can't talk right now." Lucy began pulling away from him as he seized her arm.

"Where are you going in such a hurry?" Scott questioned noticing the tears in her eyes. "Lucy what is it?"

"Oh Scott, it's.......it's Kevin. You see......" Lucy trailed off feeling as if the walls were closing in.

"What did he do to you?" Scott asked raising his voice in anger from seeing her so upset.

"I.....I just can't talk about this now. I'm sorry." she explained freeing herself from his hold and rushing towards the elevator.

"Lucy!" Scott called out chasing her as she stepped into the elevator just as the doors shut in front of him. "What have you done now Collins?"

Kevin sat behind the microphone for an hour listening to the many complaints of Port Charles citizens blaming him for the recent murders in town. He also received a few prank calls from people wanting tips on how to commit a perfect murder seeing as Kevin's family was filled with sociopaths. After talking to a woman who was giving him a lecture on how he was going to eternally burn for writing the novel, Garcia agreed to let him have a commercial break.

"Man, I don't know how you do it." A technician said walking into the room as Kevin leaned back in his chair frustrated that the murderer hadn't called in. "They're ready to feed you to the wolves out there."

"They're just angry because the murderer hasn't been apprehended and they just need a scapegoat." Kevin explained calmly to the man. "Since my book is the framework for the murders, I am the target of the anger."

"I just don't see how you can remain so calm." the man continued in astonishment. "I would be screaming and yelling after hearing half of those things."

"Well, I know that wouldn't accomplish anything. Besides, I have more important issues to worry about than someone's emotional outburst about the whole....."

"You let me in there now or else I'll let myself in there." a voice screamed from out in the control room.

"What was that?" the technician asked turning around in the direction of the sound.

"I don't know." Kevin replied looking out into the room and seeing Scott trying to make his way past the two guards in front of the door.

"Let me in there Collins!" Scott shouted shoving one guard aside as he glared at Kevin. "Why don't you act like a man and face me once and for all?"

"I'll call security." the technician began picking up the phone.

"No, that's not necessary." Kevin replied waving at the guards to let Scott inside.

"Are you sure?" the technician asked in confusion as Scott pushed his way into the room.

"Everything is alright Tim." Kevin assured him as Scott swatted at his shoulders and straightened his shirt.

"That's more like it." Scott muttered directing his attention to Kevin.

"What can I do for you Scott?" Kevin questioned glaring up at him.

"What the hell did you do to Lucy today?" Scott grumbled moving towards Kevin.

"What are you talking about Scott?" Kevin asked in confusion standing up to face him.

"I saw her at the hospital today and she could barely talk because she was so upset." Scott explained raising a fist in Kevin's direction. "I don't know what you did to her Collins, but hear this, you're never going to get another chance to hurt her again."

"Exactly what are you saying Scott?" Kevin asked raising his voice a bit.

"I'm saying stay the hell away from Lucy. She doesn't need or want you in her life anymore." Scott replied stepping up to him.

"Scott, Lucy's a grown woman. She doesn't need you to make her decisions for her." Kevin grumbled as his anger as he moved towards Scott. "Besides, what goes on between Lucy and I is none of your business."

"Well, I'm making it my business Collins." Scott snapped charging toward Kevin.

"The hell you are!" Kevin shouted as Garcia stepped in between the two of them.

"Kevin, not now." Garcia ordered turning to his friend. "You're back on."

"Dr. Collins, you've got a call on line two." Tim called out as the commercial break ended. "I think it may be your guy."

Kevin glared at Scott for a moment, then took a deep breath before returning back to his seat in front of the microphone. He glanced up at Scott who was still behind held back by Garcia as the room grew silent.

"Hello," Kevin said putting on his headset.

"Long time huh Doctor Collins?" the disguised voice questioned in amusement as Kevin stiffened in his seat.

"It has been a while." Kevin agreed moving in towards the microphone. "I was afraid that you weren't going to call."

"And miss out on the fun?" the voice chuckled. "Come on, you know me better than that by now."

"You're right." Kevin agreed waiting for the trace to start as Garcia urged him to keep talking. "So tell me what's on your mind?"

"I have a question for you." the voice explained to him.

"What might that be?" Kevin questioned curiously.

"Tell me Doctor Collins, what would you do with a lying, cheating ex-fiancee who talks way too much?" the voice asked in amusement as a cry was heard in the background.

"Lucy," Kevin gasped as a terrible feeling grew in the pit of his stomach. "Don't you touch her! If you hurt her, I'll......"

"Kevin help me!" Lucy's scream filled the small room as Kevin's heart raced.

"Lucy," Kevin called out to her as the murderer took back the telephone.

"That ball's in your court now Doc." he laughed before the phone went dead.

Chapter 12
Kidnapped??

Kevin stared at the microphone as the sound of dial tone invaded his ears. He glanced up at Scott who was also silent as the cold realization sunk in that Lucy was at the mercy of a madman, who's sole purpose was to destroy the lives of many in Port Charles based upon Kevin's work of fiction. Kevin pulled the headset off and tossed it onto the table as Garcia entered the room.

"Tell me we've nailed that bastard." Scott spoke up turning to face Garcia.

"It wasn't long enough." Garcia replied making eye contact with Kevin. "We were three seconds short."

"Three seconds short?" Scott repeated in confusion. "How the hell is that possible?"

"I'm afraid that the machines just weren't quick enough to get a complete trace on the callers whereabouts." Garcia explained directing his attention over at Scott. "We're trying to locate some kind of approximate perimeter in which the call could've come from."

"How long is that going to take?" Scott questioned as Kevin stood up from his seat and began pacing the room.

"My men are working on it as fast as possible." Garcia replied noticing one of his men signaling for him to return into the control booth.

"This just doesn't make sense." Kevin thought outloud as he moved around the room thinking about Lucy. "Something is just not right here."

"Of course not Doctor. Some madman has Lucy captive and God knows what he'll do to her." Scott announced watching Kevin move around the room.

"Scott, you don't understand." Kevin began as theories began to churn in his mind.

"What's not to understand Kevin?" Scott questioned in anger. "That monster who's using your book as the basis of his killing spree has Lucy and it's only a matter of time before we find her body cold in a ditch somewhere."

"I'm not so sure of that." Kevin replied trying to remain calm. "You see he's diverting from the book. Kidnapping Lucy was never part of the master plan."

"So what are you saying? That he's trying to re-write the chapters?" Scott asked noticing the color drain from Kevin's face.

"This just doesn't fit into the profile Scott." Kevin explained thinking about the murders that had taken place up until that point in time. "Everyone's death has been precisely like the novel down to the very last detail and taking Lucy like this is compromising his whole set of principles behind the murders."

"Principles?" Scott repeated shaking his head in disbelief. "Kevin, this person likes to graphically end the lives of people based on a work of fiction. I'd have to say that principles are the last thing this person has."

"He's a perfectionist Scott. Every murder he's committed was precisely as he wanted it to be.......identical to the book and he's been sure to keep it that way." Kevin insisted noticing the copy of General Homicide sitting on top of the table in front of him. He picked it up and scanned through the pages. "Now all we have to do is figure out his new angle and try to put ourselves one step ahead of him before it's too late."

Lucy tried to shift her body around in the hard, wooden chair, but it was no use because her restraints were just too tight. Her wrists hurt from the rope digging into her skin. She let out a frustrated cry realizing that she was no longer in control of her life at this moment in time as she sat waiting for the person who had abducted her to come back.

"If only I would've just been paying more attention to things rather then rushing off to my car like that........" Lucy thought to herself as she remembered entering her car and feeling the hand pressed over her nose and mouth until the world went black around her. When she had awakened, she tried to regain her eyesight, but the world was black around her.

Lucy tried to think positive, but the more she thought of how she had spoken to Kevin earlier, the more terrified she was that she'd never see him again and tears began to form in her eyes. She thought of their unborn child growing inside of her and feared for the innocent life as she heard a door slamming in the distance signaling the person's return from wherever they had gone off to.

"Please........let me go." Lucy began choking back her tears as she felt a hand upon her cheek.

"Now you know I can't do that Lucy." the disguised voice explained stroking her hair. "Besides, I thought you were having fun here."

"You don't really want to hurt me." Lucy insisted trying to pull herself together as she felt the gloved hand return to her face once more. "You know when my Doc finds you, you're going to regret this."

"Is that so?" the voice questioned in amusement.

"That's right. You're going to wish that you were never born." Lucy threatened boldly as she listened to the sounds of laughter filling the room. "What's so funny?"

"You don't get it do you Lucy?" the voice asked with a chuckle.

"I hardly think that this is a laughing matter. Soon, you'll regret ever messing with me or Kevin." Lucy warned as the sounds of laughter now exploded throughout the room.

"Is that so? Well, I think that you're wrong Lucy." the voice explained after the laughter died down. "Right now I have a bigger fish to fry and you're just the bait I need to do it."

"Kevin," Eve called out rushing into the radio station as she noticed Kevin, Garcia, and a few officers standing in the middle of the lobby talking to one another.

"You can't go in there Miss." a uniformed officer explained to her as she tried to push her way past the guards.

"You don't understand." Eve began to explain to the officer. "You see my friend is in there and......"

"I'm sorry, but you can't go in there right now." the officer continued as Eve took a step back. "Now if you'll just leave......"

"Fine." Eve replied shaking her head as she turned around to leave. Suddenly she heard a crash in the distance and the officer left to check it out. She realized this was her opportunity and rushed into the control room quickly shutting the door behind her.

"Kevin, I came here as soon as I heard." she announced breathlessly as she moved in towards Kevin.

"Eve," Kevin replied surprised to see her as she quickly hugged him.

"Why Ms. Lambert, why am I not surprised to see you here?" Garcia remarked sarcastically watching Eve hugging Kevin.

"Garcia," Eve nodded focusing her attention on Kevin. "Did you discover any information about Lucy's whereabouts?"

"No, nothing." Kevin replied pulling back from her. "They're waiting for some type of lock on the general area the call may have come from."

"Perhaps you could make this easier on us Dr. Lambert if you'd just tell us where you took Ms. Coe." Garcia added glaring at Eve.

"What?" Eve questioned in confusion.

"It's no secret that you and Lucy have bad blood between the two of you." Garcia explained scratching his head. "It only makes sense that you'd try to eliminate her any way you could."

"Excuse me, but I'd have to say that just because Lucy and I don't see eye to eye on things, doesn't make me a murderer or a kidnapper." Eve began offended by Garcia's incinuation.

"Just where were you when Kevin was on the air with the kidnapper?" Garcia questioned raising an eyebrow.

"Garcia, Eve is not the General Homicide murderer." Kevin interrupted wondering why Garcia was tearing into Eve.

"She has plenty of motive considering the recent turn of events." Garcia explained matter of fact.

"Detective Garcia." one of the officers called out to him. "I think we may have something."

"I'll be right back." Garcia explained glancing at Eve. "Don't you go anywhere."

"Don't worry. I'm not leaving." Eve muttered turning her attention back to Kevin. "I can't believe the nerve of that man."

"He's just trying to do his job Eve." Kevin informed her as he began pacing the room once more. "I just can't believe this is all happening. I should've been there to protect Lucy. I never should've written that damn book."

"Kevin, you had no idea that this was going to happen." Eve insisted taking a step towards him.

"I should've just taken the day off and spent it with Lucy like she asked me to." Kevin continued thinking about the last time he had seen her. "If only we would've been together, then I never would've discovered that message and she never would've........"

"Kevin, right now is not the time to dwell on what might've been." Eve informed him as she grabbed a hold of him. "Right now we need to concentrate on finding Lucy."

"You're right." Kevin agreed looking into her eyes. "That's all that matters now."

"We're going to find her Kevin." Eve announced touching the side of his face as she noticed the tears in his eyes.

"I just can't stand around here doing nothing." Kevin replied breaking away from her as he crossed the room. "Just the thought of Lucy suffering in any way just makes me so angry and the thought of losing her........."

"You're not going to lose her Kevin." Eve insisted reaching out to hold Kevin as he slowly felt himself coming apart.

"Kevin, I just talked to one of the officers and......." Scott called out walking into the room and noticing Eve and Kevin hugging each other. "I'm sorry.....I didn't mean to intrude."

"Scott," Eve responded pulling back from Kevin as she looked at him.

"Eve," Scott replied with a nod unable to take his eyes off of her.

"So what did you find Scott?" Kevin questioned clearing his throat trying to break the tension in the air.

"I suggested to one of the ever so brilliant law officials out there that they try the phone company out there to see if there's any way to run down the caller's location." Scott explained matter of fact still directing his attention in Eve's direction.

"And?" Kevin questioned suddenly realizing that both Scott and Eve appeared to be in a world of their own.

"They're looking into it right now." Scott answered unable to look away from Eve.

"That's fantastic." Kevin replied hopefully as he noticed Garcia directing him to come into the control booth. "I'll be right back."

"So what are you doing here Eve?" Scott questioned as Kevin left the room.

"I came over as soon as I heard about Lucy." she explained quietly as he took a step towards her. "I wanted to see if there was any way that I could help in the search for her."

"Is that the only reason?" Scott questioned thinking about finding her and Kevin hugging each other.

"I was worried about Kevin." Eve insisted feeling her heart break in two as she thought about how much she missed being with Scott.

"Oh, I see." Scott replied with a frown.

"You look disappointed." Eve decided glancing him over.

"I'm just worried about Lucy." Scott insisted taking a step closer towards her. "She was very upset the last time I saw her and I couldn't figure out why, but now I think I'm starting to understand."

"Oh?" Eve questioned feeling her pulse quicken at his nearness to her as the door opened and Kevin re-entered the room.

"Good news." Kevin announced stepping alongside of Eve. "Garcia is waiting for the fax from the phone company right now and within a matter of minutes we'll be able to discover where the call came from."

"The sooner we find that bastard the better." Scott added with a hint of anger as Garcia entered the room. "Well, did you discover anything?"

"Oh you can say that again." Garcia replied handing copies of the fax to Kevin, Scott, and Eve.

"I don't believe this." Kevin gasped noticing the number written down on the paper. "This has to be some kind of mistake."

"No mistake." Garcia insisted directing his attention towards Eve, who had suddenly grown silent. "So Dr. Lambert, would you care to explain why the call was placed from your cell phone number?"

Chapter 13
Cell Phones??

"I have no idea what you're talking about Garcia." Eve replied as all eyes in the room focused on her. "I didn't make that phone call to Kevin."

"Eve the call was made from your cell phone." Garcia pointed out waving the paper around in the air. "How would you care to explain that?"

"Garcia, my cell phone was stolen a couple of days ago at the hospital. I left it on the counter in the lounge when I was called in to check on a patient and when I returned back to the lounge a few minutes later it was gone." Eve insisted glancing over at Kevin. "You have to believe me. I didn't make that call."

"Eve I......" Kevin trailed off not knowing what to think as she pleaded with him.

"So you're saying that you were careless enough to leave a cell phone lying around in a hospital lounge for just anyone to steal?" Garcia questioned skeptically watching Eve. "I didn't take you for the careless type Dr. Lambert."

"Well, if that's the case Garcia, then you know I'm not the person you're looking for." Eve insisted raising her voice in anger as she turned around to face him once more. "All the evidence points in my direction, yet you said it yourself Detective. I'm not typically that kind of careless person. Now if I was a murderer and a kidnapper like you say I am, then why would I make a call from my cell phone to Kevin."

"Well, perhaps you slipped up and called on that phone by mistake, and upon realizing it you rushed over here to see Kevin and feign concern for Lucy Coe." Garcia speculated eyeing Eve closely. "She was a threat to you afterall."

"Garcia, I did not kidnap Lucy!" Eve shouted unable to control her anger as Scott took a step forward.

"She's right Garcia." Scott added finally speaking up after a pause. "This is some kind of set up."

"Exactly." Eve agreed thankful that Scott was defending her.

"Monk!" Victor called out running into the room. "I heard the news on the radio! Please say it isn't so. Say that monster doesn't have Lucy."

"Victor, why don't we discuss this in the lobby?" Kevin suggested turning to his father as the tension built between Garcia, Scott, and Eve.

"Why Monk?" Victor questioned glancing over at Garcia. "I don't see why we have to leave the........oh, hello Detective how are you? I do hope your men are doing all that they can to find Lucy."

"We're working on it right now Professor Collins." Garcia nodded turning his attention back to Scott and Eve.

"We'll be right back." Kevin explained leading Victor out of the room and closing the door behind them.

"What's going on in there?" Victor questioned glancing through the window at the group they left behind.

"The call to the radio station was made from Eve's cell phone." Kevin explained in a whisper as Victor's eyes grew wide.

"You don't think she's the one that.....?" Victor trailed off looking at Eve.

"No, it doesn't seem too likely." Kevin replied after thinking it over for a moment. "She would have no reason to do this."

"Monk, how did this happen? The last time I checked on you, you were in that storage building with Lucy." Victor continued remembering the plan he and Luke had implemented.

"Well, you didn't expect us to stay in there forever, did you?" Kevin questioned thinking back to his father's deviousness.

"Of course not Monk, but I just assumed that the two of you wouldn't be able to get enough of each other after spending a night locked up like that........" Victor trailed off sensing something in Kevin's eyes. "It did go alright, didn't it? You two got a chance to talk things through, right?"

"Among other things." Kevin replied watching Victor's face light up with delight.

"I just knew that the two of you would be together again as it should be." Victor announced grinning from ear to ear.

"Victor, you're missing the point. Lucy's been kidnapped." Kevin reminded him quickly. "That kind of puts a damper on things."

"Well, that's a temporary setback. As soon as we rescue Lucy, then things can go back to normal around the lighthouse." Victor continued with a shrug. "Sigmund can go to that duck pond out back and....."

"Look Victor, now isn't the time or place for this," Kevin insisted scanning the room quickly, "but there's something that I think you should know before you start getting your hopes up about Lucy moving back into the lighthouse."

"He's toying with us." Scott insisted crumpling the paper in hands and throwing it into the waste basket. "This was just the murderer's way of pointing the finger in the wrong direction once again. Why can't you see that Garcia?"

"Scott, from what I can see all the evidence points at Dr. Lambert here and it's my job to get to the bottom of this investigation." Garcia snapped glaring at Eve. "I'm going to nail you one way or the other Dr. Lambert."

"If you keep this up Garcia, then I'll slap you with harassment charges." Scott insisted standing in front of Eve protectively. "My client doesn't need this badgering from you when you should be out looking for the real criminal."

"Gee, Mr. Baldwin, are you speaking as her lawyer or former lover here?" Garcia questioned noticing Scott's quickness to support Eve. "Of course this wouldn't be the first time you've tampered with my investigation in order to protect Dr. Lambert."

"I'm telling you the truth Garcia." Eve insisted not wanting Scott to get involved in this any more than he already was.

"Yeah, well you'd better have some way to prove your story about the missing phone." Garcia warned her quickly.

"I filed a report at the nurse's station as soon as I discovered it was missing." Eve added standing taller as she stood her ground against Garcia's accusations.

"Why don't you call the hospital and check it out Detective? Then you can start focusing on the person who's taken Lucy." Scott suggested matter of fact as Garcia let out an angered grunt.

"I'll do just that." Garcia replied opening the door as he glanced back at Eve. "You'd better pray that your story checks out or else I'll be dragging you in handcuffs to the jail cell waiting for you back at the Port Charles police department faster than you can imagine."

"Don't waste your breath threatening me Detective. I have nothing to worry about." Eve shouted out to him as he slammed the door behind him.

"Can you believe the nerve of that guy?" Scott questioned turning to look at Eve. "Are you alright?"

"As good as I can be under these circumstances." Eve confessed looking up at Scott. "Thanks for defending me like that."

"It was nothing Eve." Scott shrugged with a smile as he nudged her. "Besides, I know you're innocent."

"How can you be so sure?" Eve asked curiously looking into Scott's eyes.

"Because I know you Eve." Scott whispered leaning in towards her. "You have a good heart and this isn't your style. You'd never hurt anyone intentionally. I know what a good person you are."

"Thank you Scott. That means so much to me." Eve began with tears in her eyes as Scott reached out to hug her. "I needed this right now."

"Monk, what are you trying to tell me?" Victor questioned noticing the hesitation in Kevin's eyes as he took in a deep breath. "Why can't I start planning for Lucy's return to the Lighthouse? You love her and as far as I can see that's all that matters."

"It's not that simple Victor." Kevin sighed trying to keep it together as he thought about Lucy being pregnant. "You see Lucy is......"

"Hey you two," Scott interrupted as he and Eve entered the room, "any news yet?"

"Nothing." Kevin replied as Garcia rushed into the room.

"Kevin, we've got a lock on the area that phone call came from." Garcia explained placing a map down on the table and pointed to it. "My men have narrowed it down to this area. The caller must've been somewhere in this proximity."

"But that's just a couple blocks away." Kevin gasped realizing that Lucy may be closer than he thought.

"That's right and I'm guessing that Lucy's somewhere in this area." Garcia continued pointing to the abandoned warehouse down the road. "My men and I are going to check it out right now."

"I'm going along with you." Kevin announced turning to Victor. "You stay here in case something else comes up."

"Kevin, I can't let you go with us. It's too dangerous." Garcia explained in an authoritative tone.

"Garcia, the woman I love may be in serious trouble and I will not sit back doing nothing while you look for her." Kevin insisted pulling on his jacket.

"Count me in too." Scott spoke up reaching for his car keys. "Lucy needs us right now."

"I'm afraid that I don't have the authority to let you two run around in the middle of this investi........" Garcia began to protest as the two men stood before him.

"Garcia, I wrote this book and it's me that the murderer wants." Kevin explained realizing that they were wasting time arguing.

"The more reason for you to stay here and let my men handle it." Garcia added quickly.

"Come on Garcia, the person is a psychopath and no one is better trained for a confrontation than Kevin here." Scott insisted seriously. "Who knows what we all may be up against?"

"Please, I need to be there for Lucy." Kevin pleaded as his heart pounded in his chest.

"Oh alright, considering that you two would probably find a way to sneak along anyways." Garcia decided sensing the pain in Kevin's voice. "I just want you to know that this is against my better judgment."

"Great. I'll pull the car around." Scott announced glancing over at Kevin.

"I'm going with you two." Eve spoke up following Scott.

"You're not going anywhere. It's too dangerous." Scott insisted with a halt.

"But Scott, I want to help out too....." Eve began hoping everyone would realize how badly she wanted to nail this monster as well.

"Eve, Scott's right. It's too dangerous for you to go." Kevin added turning to Victor. "Stay here with Eve and make sure she's alright."

"You've got it Monk." Victor agreed giving his son a quick hug as he whispered in his ear. "Bring her back to us. If anyone can do it, I know it's you."

"Thanks Victor. I'll do my best." Kevin replied with a half smile. "Let's go Scott."

"Alright," Scott agreed placing his hands on Eve's shoulders. "Now you listen to us and don't try any funny stuff like sneaking out after we leave."

"Okay, I won't." Eve agreed with a nod as she pulled Scott to her. "Be careful."

"I will." he replied turning to Kevin. "Alright, let's go get Lucy."
