Closing the Gap

"So this is it huh?" Scott questioned turning to face Kevin as he stepped out of the squad car. He noticed the Kevin appeared to be lost in thought as he looked at the fair grounds in horror recalling the vivid memories of the past. "Kevin?"

"The last time I was here I watched my brother burn to death." Kevin replied feeling chills run down his spine as the night wind howled around him. "I didn't ever think that I'd see this place again."

"Maybe you should wait in the car while my men check things out." Garcia began with concern as the backup arrived.

"No, I'm going to follow this through until Lucy is safe." Kevin insisted boldly trying to disclose his true feelings about his fears.

"Kevin, you don't have to go in there." Scott added realizing that he had never seen Kevin look so shaken up. "I'll find her and bring her out safely."

"Scott, I need to find Lucy before something happens to her and staying out here isn't an option. I have to go in there." Kevin explained drawing in a deep breath as he gazed over the fair grounds once more. "Besides, it's time for me to face these demons once and for all."

Lucy began to feel lightheaded as she continued to struggle with the ropes. She realized that soon time would run out for her if she didn't work faster, but she the harder she tried, the more fatigued she felt. She let out a frustrated cry closing her eyes for a moment and thinking about Kevin. She saw his perfect smile and his face as if he was there with her. Suddenly images of holding a baby in her arms with Kevin's loving arms wrapped around her flooded her mind.

"I have to get out of here." she insisted opening her eyes and saying a silent prayer to God. "Please don't let me die here. Give this baby a chance."

Feeling a new strength growing inside of her as the thought of protecting the life of her unborn child became the most important priority at that moment, she was able to loosen the ropes around her ankles a bit. She kicked her heels out as her binding fell to the floor. She tried to anchor herself into a standing position when suddenly a loud buzzing noise filled the room and her attention was directed at a television set hanging on the wall in the far corner of the room.

"So Lucy, how are you doing in there?" Ryan's voice questioned as his image filled the monitor. "It looks like you've got your hands full right now. A bit tied up, aren't ya?"

"Let me out of here!" she screamed hoping that he didn't notice the ropes on the floor.

"Nope. Sorry.......can't do it Lucy, but I can offer you some entertainment before you die." Ryan replied shaking his head as his image was replaced with a new image.

"Kevin?" Lucy questioned as she watched him and Garcia entering the abandoned carnival grounds.

"Yep, you've guessed it. The man of the hour has arrived and look he brought friends." Ryan replied with laughter as Scott followed in behind Kevin. "Looks like you were wrong about him Lucy. Brother dear still cares about you.....enough to risk his own life. Oh and would you look at that? An added bonus."

"Kevin! Scott!" Lucy screamed watching them whisper to themselves. "Help me! I'm in here!"

"They can't here you Lucy." Ryan explained in amusement. "The room is sound proof so you may as well rid yourself of any thoughts that you might have of being rescued, but don't worry, I'll be sure to let them know that you'll be watching their final demise from in here. It looks like it's a lost cause for all of you."

"Don't you dare hurt them Ryan." Lucy warned him as she struggled to break free.

"Sorry Lucy, but I have no choice." Ryan answered as his face filled the screen once more. "Don't worry though, I'll make it quick and painless for Scotty boy. He never was that interesting anyways, except maybe in your eyes."

"No!" Lucy screamed watching Ryan waving at her from in front of the camera.

"Look on the bright side, you'll probably be dead before the finaly with Kevin takes place since you've got about ten minutes left before it's all over. Now I've got to run, but I hope you enjoy the show. Ta Lucy." Ryan chuckled as he was replaced by the room Kevin and Scott were in.

Eve stepped into the night and looked at the merry go round in front of her. She zipped up her jacket and set out to meet him. She glanced over her shoulder uneasily making sure that no one was lurking behind her as she stepped inside waiting. She watched the merry go round thinking back to how much she loved carnivals when she was a kid, but how now everything around her seemed to have a life of it's own.......an evil menacing force possessing each one.

"Eve," a voice called out causing her to jump at the sound.

"You startled me. I wasn't expecting it to be so dark in here." she replied placing her hand to her chest as she turned around and saw Ryan approaching her.

"I'm glad you arrived so quickly." he smiled noticing the time. "I didn't want things to get messed up."

"I knew that it was very important that I made it here as fast as I could." she added shivering underneath her jacket. "So where is Lucy? Is she alright?"

"In time Eve." Ryan explained closing in the gap between them. "Right now I need to know if you took care of that favor I needed."

"Of course I did, and I made sure that no one followed me just as you requested." Eve answered gazing into his dark eyes. "I still don't see why you wanted me to drive all the way out here considering the circumstances."

"Excellent, I knew that I could count on you Eve." Ryan smiled delighted by the beauty standing before him. "So tell me where is Victor? I can't wait to see him."

"He's waiting in the car." Eve replied noticing the frown on Ryan's face. "I wanted to make sure that it was safe before I brought him in here. He asked a lot of questions, and I wasn't quite sure what to tell him since you were rather vague on the phone."

"He'll understand soon enough. Once again I must say, good work Eve." Ryan said approvingly as he placed a strong hand on her shoulder. "Somehow I knew calling you would be the best idea that I've had in a long time."

"So tell me, how is Lucy?" Eve asked feeling her lip quiver as Ryan pulled her closer towards him. "Is she around here?"

"Who cares about Lucy?" Ryan questioned in a whisper holding her tightly. "I think that you and I have more important things to talk about right now, wouldn't you agree?"

"But what about all the things you and I had discussed earlier about Lucy," Eve began as he glided his finger along her shoulder, "I mean now that this is over, don't you think that Lucy should be......"

"Oh Eve, would you quit worrying about Lucy? She is a big girl who can take care of herself." Ryan insisted with a smile as he leaned in closer to her. "Besides, don't you think that there are some things that you and I would rather keep to ourselves then let Lucy in on?"

"I don't think that this is the time." Eve started uneasily as she felt her nerves twisting in the pit of her stomach.

"You're right," Ryan whispered touching the side of her face, "right now I think that you'd better get Victor." "I don't think so." Eve replied pushing away from Ryan. "What do you mean you don't think so?" Ryan questioned in confusion as he moved to pull on her arm.

"Get your hands off of her!" Chris ordered stepping out of the shadows with a gun in hand.

"I see that I misjudged you Evie. I thought that we trusted one another." Ryan replied turning his attention to Chris. "And just what is he doing here?"

"Why Dr. Collins, you should be smart enough to figure this out," Eve muttered sarcastically, "or should I say Dr. Chamberlain?"

"But how could you.....?" Ryan trailed off in bewilderment as Chris took his place alongside of Eve still pointing the gun at him.

"I was a bit skeptical when you asked me to come here after insisting that I stay in Port Charles until everything was over." Eve began explaining as she glared at Ryan knowing that she was safe with Chris at her side. "Although, I wasn't quite convinced that this was what I believed it to be until you asked me to bring Victor here, then I knew something was wrong. Of course I never would've imagined that I'd find you here instead of Kevin."

"You think you're so smart Dr. Lambert. You think that you've got it all figured out, well you don't." Ryan snapped at her in anger realizing that things were starting to spin out of control. "You came here tonight to play the hero didn't you Eve? You think that by having your little boyfriend holding that gun, that you're in control, well you're not you little slut."

"Don't you dare talk to her that way!" Chris shouted waving the gun closer to Ryan.

"Aren't you going to tell him Eve?" Ryan questioned with a chuckle

"What's he talking about?" Chris asked in confusion.

"He's crazy." Eve replied in anger as she directed her attention back on Ryan. "Where's Lucy?"

"You think you're going to be able to save her Eve?" Ryan questioned in amusement. "Do you think that it might redeem you in Scott's eyes? Perhaps it'll erase your past."

"Enough of your games!" Chris ordered jabbing the barrel of the gun into Ryan's chest. "I'm about to make you pay for all the things you've done to all of us."

"Oh is that so Dr. Ramsey?" Ryan questioned gazing down at the gun for a brief second before looking at the cold stare Chris was giving him. "You don't have a clue what you're up against."

"Just bet me." Chris replied gazing over at Eve. "Why don't you go search this place and I'll keep him covered?"

"Chris, I don't want to leave you like this." Eve explained thinking of all that Ryan was capable of. "I noticed a car off in the distance when we pulled up. Perhaps we should wait for Garcia and the rest of the guys to get here."

"Eve, I can handle him, now go find help." Chris ordered directing his attention towards her. "Chamberlain is nothing to worry about. I've got the situation under control."

"I don't think so." Ryan added as he reached for the gun and began struggling with Chris as Eve watched in horror.

Kevin and Scott moved through the darkened corridors as Garcia and his men were off checking out the other areas of the carnival. With each step he took, Kevin found himself on the verge of having a breakdown. He closed his eyes for a brief second and images of Ryan's graphic death flooded back to him. His breathing became labored as he reopened his eyes to find himself back to the present only a few steps behind Scott in the narrow hallway.

"Are you sure you can handle this Collins?" Scott questioned noticing how pale Kevin appeared to be.

"I'm fine. We just have to keep going." Kevin insisted trying to dismiss the sick feeling burning from within.

"I feel like we've been going in circles for a while now. Everything looks the same around here." Scott sighed as they turned around a corner once more.

"If only I could remember where.........." Kevin began as a loud bang rang out.

"What was that?" Scott questioned turning around in the direction of the noise as it rang out once more.

"It sounded like a gun shot was fired." Kevin replied as the two men took off in the direction of the sound

Chapter 18
The heat is on

"Please God, I know you're out there. Help me please." Lucy cried out with tears in her eyes as she listened to the hissing sounds coming from the leaking gas valve. She glanced up at the monitor which had turned black and she struggled to break free. "Let Kevin find me."

Lucy began to cough as the fumes invaded her lungs and she thought of never seeing Kevin again. She realized that if she didn't act fast, she would never get to hold him or tell him about their unborn child that was growing inside of her. Wiggling her hands a bit, she felt the ropes loosen and she was freed from her bondage. She rushed to the door pulling on the knob only to discover that it was locked.

"No!" she cried out yanking on the door harder hoping that it would release, but it didn't budge. "This can't be happening."

Lucy pulled on the door once more when suddenly she heard the sound of a gun go off on the monitor. She glanced up at the television set and saw a man lying on the ground with Ryan hovering over him. Her chest felt as if it was caving in as she struggled to see the man lying on the ground.

"Doc! No!" she cried out hoping that she was wrong as the screen went black.

"Oh God Chris." Eve shouted as she watched him fall to the floor clenching his side. "No!"

Ryan stood above Chris holding the barrel of the gun at him with a pleased grin upon his face. He kicked Chris with a chuckle, then turned around to face Eve aiming the gun at her.

"Now for you Dr. Lambert." Ryan began with a twisted expression as he pulled on the trigger. "You don't know how much I'm going to enjoy this Eve."

"No!" Chris shouted out knocking at the back of Ryan's knee and causing him to topple to the ground as he reached for the gun. "Get out of here Eve."

"I'm not going to leave you like this Chris." Eve replied rushing to his side as Ryan tried to regain his composure. "You've been shot."

"Go find Lucy and the others." Chris insisted clenching onto his abdomen. "I'll be all right."

"Chris, I can't leave you like this." Eve began again stepping towards him as Ryan moved about on the floor.

"Just go!" Chris ordered as he realized how much blood he was losing.

"Chris, I........." Eve started touching the side of his face.

"Get out of here Eve." Chris interrupted feeling chills run throughout his body as Eve reluctantly stepped out of the room searching for help.

Scott and Kevin followed the direction of the sound until they realized that they were in the room that they had first entered in. Garcia and his men had also entered the room from another direction and they had their guns in hand ready for whatever they may encounter. Kevin raised his hand to silence everyone as he heard a thumping noise coming from a cabinet in the corner of the room. He inched towards the cabinet and noticed that blood appeared to be leaking out from the bottom. Garcia followed behind him ready for action as Kevin pulled open the cabinet doors and a man fell out.

"Ramsey?" Garcia questioned as Chris fell to the ground. "What is he doing here?"

"It looks like he's been shot." Kevin replied kneeling down on the floor next to Chris. "Chris, can you hear me?"

"No........no I won't let you hurt her." Chris mumbled under his breath. "Eve......get out of here.......he's going after Eve."

"Eve?" Scott questioned lowering himself next to Chris and smacking the side of his face trying to capture his attention. "What about Eve?"

"Scott, he's lost a lot of blood." Kevin explained trying to keep Chris from slipping into unconsciousness.

"I'll call for an ambulance." Garcia said dialing 911 on his cell phone.

"What the hell happened here?" Scott questioned as Kevin tried to apply pressure to the wound.

"I don't know." Kevin replied looking down at Chris. "Chris, can you hear me?"

"You're not going to hurt her. I won't let you." Chris choked in between coughs.

"Chris, where is Eve?" Scott questioned trying to get a straight answer out of him.

"He's got her." Chris replied glancing over at Kevin. "He's going to kill her."

"What is he talking about?" Scott asked in confusion.

"Keep him talking." Kevin insisted suddenly struck with an eerie feeling.

"Chris, where did Kevin take Eve?" Scott questioned playing into what he was saying.

"Not Kevin." Chris replied drawing in a deep breath.

"But you just said that I took her." Kevin reminded him as one of the officers took over applying pressure to Chris's wound.

"She ran away. He didn't get her.........." Chris trailed off as he pointed in the direction Eve took off in. "Go find her. Don't let him get her........"

"Chris! Chris!" Kevin shouted as Chris began slipping out of consciousness.

"The paramedics will be here any minute." Garcia explained hearing the sirens in the distance. "We should get him outside."

"Kevin, what was he talking about?" Scott questioned in confusion. "You were with me this whole time. There's no way that you could've been the one going after Eve. He must be delusional from all the blood he's lost."

"That may be very possible Scott, but if what Chris was saying is the truth, then my biggest fear may have just come to life again." Kevin replied realizing that his nightmares were becoming a reality.

"Lucy!" A voice called out interrupting her tears as she glanced around the room looking for the source of the sound.

"Eve? I must be hallucinating." Lucy questioned following the sound of the voice. "Eve, is that you?"

"Where are you Lucy?" Eve questioned glancing at Lucy through the small monitor.

"Where are you?" Lucy asked finding a speaker system hooked up on the wall.

"It appears to be some kind of control room." Eve explained gazing over all the surveillance equipment around the small cramped room that she had ducked into in order to hide from Ryan.

"Eve, I don't have much time. You've got to help me." Lucy explained noticing the gas was flooding out of the pipe. "This place is going to explode any minute and I'm locked inside."

"Where are you Lucy?" Eve questioned trying to determine her whereabouts.

"I don't know." Lucy replied with a cough. "Eve, I don't have much time left."

"I'm coming to look for you." Eve explained realizing that Lucy had to be in one of the rooms down the long corridor she had walked through. "I'm on my way."

"Eve!" Lucy shouted realizing that Eve had disappeared. She turned around to looked at the pipe now hissing loudly as she searched for a way to shut off the fumes from escaping before time ran out. She began to cough heavily as she struggled to open the door. "Please hurry!"

Eve ran down the hall throwing open each door along the way to reveal nothing, but storage space behind them. She let out a frustrated sigh as she noticed the door at the end of the hall. She ran to the room and tried to turn the knob, but it was locked.

"This has to be it," Eve called out pushing herself into the door trying to get it to budge. She looked around the hallway searching for something to assist her in helping Lucy escape before it was too late. She noticed a fire ax on the wall and pulled it down.

"I hope this works." she thought to herself as she slammed the ax into the door causing it to crack. "Lucy?"

"Evie, oh thank God. I never thought the day would come when I'd be glad to see you." Lucy called out from inside the room as she rushed towards the door.

"Well, I never expected it either, but right now we don't have time to think about that. Step away from the door." Eve instructed as she lowered the ax into the door once more causing the lock to pop open as Lucy rushed out of the room.

"Let's get out of here." Lucy insisted grabbing a hold of Eve as she heard the furnace begin ticking. "We don't have time to chit chat. The place is going to blow."

"Chris, where was Eve going?" Scott questioned as Chris was hoisted up onto a gurney.

"She was going to look for help." Chris replied weakly as he turned to Kevin. "She was looking for Lucy, but there's a gas leak. They're going to die if we don't get to them......."

"A gas leak. What is he talking about?" Scott questioned in confusion.

"Did Ryan tell you where Lucy was?" Kevin questioned realizing that time was running out.

"He said you were going to pay for leaving him to die." Chris trailed off as the paramedics placed him into the ambulance.

"We've got to find them." Scott insisted as a loud boom rang out and one part of the building went up in flames.

"Let's go." Kevin shouted as he and Scott raced into the fire now determined to save Lucy and Eve.

Chapter 19

"Eve," Lucy coughed as she opened her eyes realizing that a pillar had fallen on her leg. She struggled to move, but it was no use seeing that she was trapped underneath. Through the black smoke she noticed Eve lying on the ground motionless and panic rushed throughout her body. "Oh God Eve! Eve, can you hear me?"

"Ooohhhh," Eve groaned rolling over on her side as she strained to see through the thick black smoke. "Lucy?"

"Eve, are you all right?" Lucy questioned noticing how the smoke began filling the hallway.

"Lucy, where are you?" Eve asked crawling on her knees around the hallway.

"I'm over here." Lucy called out as Eve made her way towards Lucy. "I'm stuck underneath this thing. It's my leg....."

"Let me see." Eve replied struggling to pull the pillar off of Lucy.

"It's no use Eve. I've already tried." Lucy explained as pain shot up her leg. "You should just go before the smoke gets any worse in here."

"Lucy, I'm not leaving you here like this." Eve insisted trying once more to remove the slab on Lucy's leg.

"Eve, please. Go find help." Lucy ordered her as she noticed the fire in the distance. "Kevin and Scott are here somewhere with Garcia. I saw them arrive a little while before you found me. Please, you need to go look for them."

"Lucy, I'm staying with you through this." Eve informed her seriously as she felt her lungs filling with smoke. "I'm not leaving this place unless you're with me."

"Eve please, this thing is too heavy for you to lift it." Lucy explained to her point blank. "The only thing that you're going to do is tire yourself out and we'll both die here. Please go get help."

"Lucy, I can't leave you in your condition. It just wouldn't be right." Eve explained in between coughs remembering that Lucy was pregnant. "If anything happened to you while I was gone, I'd never be able to forgive myself."

"Please Eve, this may be my only way out." Lucy insisted realizing that time wasn't on their side.

"Lucy, I'm not going anywhere." Eve replied defiantly as she began trying to free Lucy's leg once again.

"Listen here Evie, now is not the time to argue with me. Find Kevin." Lucy pleaded with tears in her eyes giving Eve's arm a squeeze. "I need him right now more than I've ever needed him in my life. Please this is the only way for me to have a chance out of this place."

"All right," Eve reluctantly agreed knowing that Lucy was right, "but I promise that I'll be right back for you. This is far from over Lucy."

"I believe you. Now go!" Lucy replied trying to keep herself together as the idea of survival seemed more distant with each passing moment. "Eve, wait a second."

"What is it?" Eve questioned moving to her side once more.

"Just in case I don't make it out of here, I need you to tell Kevin something..." Lucy began with a cough.

"Don't talk like that Lucy. You will get out of here and you can tell Kevin whatever it is yourself. Do you hear me?" Eve interrupted realizing that time was running out. "I'm going to get help. Besides, the Lucy Coe that I know wouldn't give up even if a stampede was in front of her."

"You're right," Lucy agreed laying back down on the floor as Eve rushed off into the cloud of smoke. She closed her eyes trying to ignore the throbbing in her leg as she whispered. "Please hurry."

Kevin and Scott made their way through the thick blackness now filling the seemingly endless narrow hallway. Half of the ceiling had crumbled down making it hard to move about freely as they pushed forward eager to find Lucy and Eve before the rest of the building caved in.

"Kevin, the further we go in, the more limited visibility is in here." Scott began choking on the fumes as Kevin climbed over a pile of fallen rubble. "What if we get inside there only to discover that we're too late? What if they're trapped underneath all of this junk somewhere and we don't find them?"

"We're not too late Scott. We're going to find them." Kevin replied persistently as he pushed a cracked slab of concrete out of the way trying to dismiss his own doubts as he whispered. "We have to."

As Kevin moved forward, he noticed more debris had fallen in the distance and he lunged forward to avoid a piece of falling concrete coming towards him. When he had ducked out of the way safely, he noticed a red object in the distance lying beneath a pile of broken concrete. Taking a closer look, he realized that it was a shoe....one of Lucy's shoes in fact. He scanned the small hallway searching for any sign of life and discovered that someone was trapped beneath the pillar fifty feet in front of them.

"Lucy!" Kevin called out jumping over a mound of rubble as Scott followed closely behind him.

"What did you find Kevin?" Scott questioned losing site of Kevin for a moment as the smoke thickened around him.

"Over here!" Kevin shouted to Scott as he realized it was Lucy. "Oh God, Lucy!"

"Doc," Lucy muttered barely alert as he rushed to her side. Her eyelids fluttered as he placed his strong hands upon her shoulders trying to move her. "I must be dreaming....."

"Lucy, I'm right here." Kevin tried assuring her as she let out a whimper.

"Doc.............I.........I'm so weak." she whispered closing her eyes once more and clenching her teeth as pain shot up her leg.

"We're got to get this thing off of her." Kevin explained to Scott noticing that her leg was lodged underneath the pillar.

"Doc............is that you.........??" Lucy repeated unable to see clearly through the cloud of smoke as she struggled to remain conscious.

"I'm here by right by your side." Kevin replied touching her face for a moment before diverting his attention back to her leg.

"Doc, the baby..........the baby........." she trailed off choking on her words.

"What is she saying?" Scott questioned unable to hear her clearly as Kevin lowered his head above hers.

"Kevin, please....I've got to get out of here......" Lucy continued in between coughs.

"I promise that we're going to make it out of here." Kevin insisted sweeping her hair out of her eyes with his index finger before gazing back at Scott. "She's going to need medical attention right away."

"Hey pal, it's your buddy Scott. I'm here too." Scott began noticing that she appeared to be in pain. "Looks like you've gotten yourself into another bind again."

"It could be worse I suppose, although right now I'm finding it a bit hard to think of something." Lucy replied clenching her teeth as she felt the pressure on her leg.

"That's my Lucy always trying to make good of the situation even when she's biting off more than she can chew." Scott smiled realizing that there wasn't much time left. "You just can't avoid danger, can you?"

"Yeah, well I guess that I've had a lot of practice getting into trouble." she replied smiling weakly as she gazed up at him. "It seems like I have a black cloud following me around lately."

"I guess you have." Scott replied wiping some dirt off of her face before exchanging worried glances with Kevin for a moment as he explained things to her. "Kevin and I are just going to pull this thing off of you, so be prepared, it might sting a little bit."

"It can't be worse than what I'm feeling right now." Lucy whispered as Scott and Kevin worked together to pull the concrete off of her. She cried out in agony as they lifted it off of her leg. "Ah, oh boy.......ouch!"

"We're almost finished." Scott explained watching her facial expression grow twisted. "Almost there."

"Got it!" Kevin announced as the two of them tossed the pillar aside.

"All done?" Lucy questioned as her left leg grew numb.

"It's all over, now we're going to get you out of here." Kevin explained scooping her up into his arms as the flames rose around them.

"Oh Doc, thank God you found me." Lucy sighed in relief as Kevin held her closer to him. "I thought that it was all over, but there's still so much to tell you."

"In time Lucy." Kevin replied stepping to the side as the ceiling began to cave in once more and Lucy wrapped her arms around his neck tightly.

"Lucy, where's Eve?" Scott spoke up feeling out of place as he began gazing around the room.

"She went to go find help once we realized that she couldn't get my leg out from under there." Lucy explained as exhaustion washed over her. She felt like a rag doll as she melted in Kevin's arms.

"I'm going to look for her." Scott insisted as a twinge of jealousy stung at his heart watching Kevin holding Lucy.

"Scott, it's too dangerous to go through here alone. This ceiling could cave in at any moment." Kevin began hearing rumbling above them once again.

"There's plenty of time for me to find Eve and get her out of here safely. You just worry about getting Lucy the help that she needs. I'll take care of the rest." Scott assured him as he gave Lucy a kiss on the forehead and whispered in her ear. "You're in good hands now. I'll see you soon. Now go."

"Pal," Lucy replied in a hoarse voice as Scott vanished into the cloud of smoke.

"Let's get you out of here." Kevin said heading towards the exit as Lucy melted against him.

After carefully making his way through the rubble, Kevin saw a light at the end of the long hallway. Noticing that Lucy appeared to be in need of medical attention for her leg and knowing her delicate condition, Kevin was eager to get her out of danger as soon as possible. Dismissing all of his worries and fears he found the strength to move forward thinking of Lucy above everything else.

"Doc........." Lucy mumbled as Kevin continued moving despite the cloud of smoke surrounding them.

"Lucy, don't try to talk too much." Kevin explained as she shivered in his arms. "We're still not out of danger yet, but I promise you that we're going to make it out of here alive."

"Kevin..........." she trailed off struggling to keep her eyes open as he held her tighter.

"Lucy please," he urged her hoping that she wouldn't try too hard to speak as he carried her to safety. With a long sigh, she nestled against his chest giving in as Kevin kept on moving.

"What's going on in there?" Chris asked as the ambulance began pulling away from the fair grounds.

"Everything is going to be just fine Dr. Ramsey." the paramedic assured him as they tried to keep him stabilized. "Just lay down and relax."

"My roommate is in there." Chris insisted trying to pull himself off of the gurney ignoring the pain in his side as his adrenaline took control.

"You're on your way to the hospital." the paramedic explained looking at his partner as Chris suddenly appeared to have superhuman strength trying to break out of the ambulance.

"I have to get to her." he shouted suddenly feeling weak.

"We'd better sedate him." the paramedic decided as his partner worked on Chris.

"This ought to do the trick." the other replied as Chris flopped his head back down on the stretcher.

"Eve," he called out as the world grew dark around him.

"Eve, Eve where are you?" Scott questioned searching through the crumbling building as he found himself deeper inside than he had anticipated. He realized that the fires appeared to be extinguishing themselves, leaving only the mere skeleton of the building around him. He noticed the piles of rubble in front of him as he scanned the room worried about Eve as his last encounter with her replayed in his mind.

"Scott, I really wish that you would take me with you." Eve insisted as they reached the door to her apartment.

"Eve, you heard Kevin and Garcia back there. It's too dangerous for you to be tagging along on this one." Scott explained trying to dismiss his own thoughts of fear as he looked into her eyes. "Eve, you have to promise me that you'll stay here until it's all over. I don't want anything to happen to you."

"Scott, I'll lock the doors as soon as you leave but," Eve began feeling her heart pound in her chest as she reached out to hug Scott, "please be careful. If Kevin's right about all of this, then there's no telling what could happen once you get there."

"I promise I'll be all right." Scott replied holding her tightly as he smelled her sweet perfume. "Eve?"

"Yes?" she questioned looking up at him with worried eyes.

"When this is all over you and I need to talk." Scott explained running his hand along the side of her face. "There's so much that I need to tell you."

"I just hope that I get that chance." Scott thought to himself as he searched the building looking for any sign of Eve.

"Kevin, there's something that I need to tell you." Lucy whispered pulling all her strength together as Kevin brought her outside in front of the now moving merry go round.

"Lucy, you don't have to say anything." Kevin replied realizing that they were safe from danger for the moment as he found a bench to rest her upon as he checked out her leg. "You need to rest right now until Garcia's men find us."

"No Doc, I need to say this." Lucy pleaded with tears in her eyes as she reached for him. "Please let me say this........Doc?"

"Alright," Kevin reluctantly agreed taking her hand in his own knowing in his heart that he could not deny her anything that she wanted.

"I love you." Lucy declared feeling as if her heart would burst with that admission as she noticed the tears in Kevin's eyes. "I needed to tell you that Doc and I was so afraid that I was going to die without saying those words to you again."

"Lucy," Kevin began touching the side of her face as tears streamed down her cheeks.

"Kevin, for that brief moment when I thought that it was all over back there, all I could think about was you. About never seeing you again, about how we've gone through so much to be together only to have it end so quickly. I realized that we had wasted so much time and there was so much ahead of us and laying there under that pillar, I thought that I'd lost it all." Lucy continued now sobbing as the harsh reality set in. "Doc, it could've all ended with a blink of an eye."

"Lucy, I'm right here." Kevin replied scooping her into his arms once again trying to ease her pain. "We're going to make it out of here as soon as Garcia's men find us. Soon it will be all over."

"Kevin, Ryan is the General Homicide murderer. He's not dead. He's alive Kevin." Lucy explained popping her head up quickly with fear in her eyes. "He was going to let me burn to death when he locked me in there......."

"Ryan's not going to hurt any of us again Lucy." Kevin continued glancing back at the fire and thinking about Scott and Eve as the reality of Ryan being alive sunk in. "Garcia's men are looking for him right now and there's no way that he can escape this time."

"Kevin, he wanted to kill you. We have to get out of here." Lucy pleaded with him noticing the distant look in his eyes. "Doc, what is it?"

"Ryan shot Chris Ramsey." Kevin explained to her point blank.

"Chris Ramsey? He's got a gun now?" Lucy questioned fearfully. "Doc, we've got to get out of here right away then."

"Lucy, I don't want you to think about Ryan right now. That's the last thing that you need in your condition........." Kevin trailed off growing unusually silent.

"Doc, I need to talk to you." Lucy insisted sensing an opening in the conversation as she began tugging on his arm and let out a cough. "I went to the hospital the other day and I found out something that's going to change the rest of our lives."

"Lucy, the more I think about it, the more I realize that we need to get out of here. We can talk about this later." Kevin replied realizing that she was going to tell him about the pregnancy as he pondered the thought of his un-dead brother running around alive and breathing.

"It's very important." she continued shaking her head as she held her abdomen tightly. "Doc, I found out something that you need to know before we get out of here."

"Lucy, this can wait." Kevin interrupted silently pleading that she wouldn't tell him the news for a few moments longer so that he could just enjoy the next few minutes holding her while making their escape. "I'm getting you out of here."

"Leaving so soon?" A voice chimed out as Kevin turned to find Ryan moving towards them with a gun in hand. "The fun was just getting started."

Chapter 20

"Gee Kevin, you look surprised to see me. What? No welcome back hug for your dearly departed brother?" Ryan began stepping closer to Kevin and Lucy. "You look like you've seen a ghost."

"You're dead." Kevin gasped unable to accept the reality of the situation.

"You didn't think that I'd leave you without saying a proper goodbye, did you Kev?" Ryan questioned in a taunting tone as he glared at him. "You can't get rid of me that easily."

"This can't be happening." Kevin replied unable to hold back his surprise as his brother stood before him more alive than ever. "I watched you die in that fire. I saw you burn to death."

"A mere illusion brother dear." Ryan explained nodding at Lucy. "Kind of like your life here in Port Charles........nothing but an illusion filled with lies and empty promises. Tell me Kevin, how does it feel to be a pilar of the community.........oh wait a second........come to think of it, I heard that you were more like the town pariah once you began expressing yourself through creative writing."

"Kevin.....I'm starting to get.......very.........very tired." Lucy whispered unable to keep her eyes open as exhaustion washed over her. She reached for her stomach as the world grew dark around her. "Doc, something's wrong here....."

"Gee Doc, I think that Lucy's upset that she's not the center of your undivided attention." Ryan seethed glaring at Lucy. "Nothing like Lucy to ruin a moment by worring about herself. You know I still don't understand why you picked such a self centered egotist to get involved with. I mean you're so self absorbed as it is that I can't fathum the idea of you two together..........then again Lucy's probably the only woman dumb enough to get involved with a man of your character."

"Shut up!" Kevin snapped unwilling to listen to Ryan as he struggled to keep it together for Lucy's sake.

"What's the matter Kevin? The truth hurt?" Ryan urged sensing his brother's turmoil. "It just burns you to no end to know that you're the same as me Kevin. Twins in every way."

"Doc, something's really wrong here." Lucy whimpered oblivious to the world around her.

"Just hold on for another minute Lucy. I promise that I'm going to get you out of here." Kevin whispered in her ear as he gazed over at the gun in Ryan's hand.

"Playing the role of the hero again, huh? Good old Kevin risking his life to save the ones he loves." Ryan questioned shaking his head at Kevin. "And to think she thought that you wouldn't be coming for her. Of course if it was me, I would've left her judgemental, superficial butt to rot away here after all that she has done to hurt you, but then again you always were the noble one weren't you? Always willing to rescue the damsel in distress."

"Ryan, leave Lucy out of this. She means nothing to you." Kevin replied holding Lucy tighter as she grew limp in his arms. "I need to get her to a hospital right away. This isn't necessary to keep us both here like this."

"Ah, that's where you're wrong Kevin. Lucy means everything to me at this point." Ryan said with a smile as he gazed over Lucy. "She's the reason that you're here, and your love for her is the reason that you're going to die. I promised her that she would be able to watch your descent into hell, and who am I to break a promise to dear Lucy?"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Scott leaped out into the cold, dark night searching for Eve as the building set a blaze. He glanced around the wooded coutyard praying that she had been able to escape before the ceiling had caved in. He had traveled throught the rooms looking for Eve, but came up with nothing until he found the leaking gas pipe rigged for explosion in the final room he had entered.
Now thrown to the ground by the third explosion, Scott puffed for air hoping that Kevin and Lucy had managed to escape. Images of Lucy's weakened condition flashed through his mind as he realized how relieved she was to be in Kevin's arms. He knew that she was a bit delirious from all that was happening, but something about her response to Kevin only confirmed what he had been thinking about over the past couple of days.
"She still wants Kevin." Scott thought to himself as he moved off of the ground. He let out a sigh realizing that he had been trying to kid himself into believeing that the make believe world he and Lucy created in Florida would last and no matter how much he hated to admit it, Kevin Collins was the man that Lucy wanted to spend her future with. The love that they had shared for one another was a thing of the past and it was time for the two of them to move on.
"Quit dwelling on Lucy and concentrate on finding Eve." Scott reminded himself as he heard creeping out in the distance from behind a couple of bushes. He turned around in the direction of the sound as it grew louder.
"Eve, are you back there? Eve, is that you? Eve?" Scott questioned moving to investigate the strange creaking noises when the noises suddenly stopped.
Puzzled by the silence Scott leaned over the bush and was greeted with a glass bottle smashed against his skull. Weakly Scott took a step back and faced his attacker as his head throbbed.
"You............" Scott trailed off falling to the ground as the sounds of sirens blazed in the distance.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Ryan, just think about what you're doing." Kevin began realizing that he would have to struggle to rationalize with his brother. "Killing me and Lucy is not going to give you any type of satisfaction. You don't want to do this."

"Oh Kevin, how can you be so wrong?" Ryan questioned shaking his head in amusement. "You know for a psychiatrist, you're not very smart are you?"

"Ryan, this isn't going to solve anything. Can we just talk about things?" Kevin suggested taking a step back as Ryan continued to aim the gun at him.

"Talk? You want to talk Kevin?" Ryan laughed in mock amusement. "You left me to die here all those years ago while you went on to live the good life.........the good son with the good life. You abandoned me when I needed you the most so that you could have it all Kevin. I begged you to listen to me Kevin, but you just wouldn't do it."

"Ryan, I'm listening now." Kevin replied softening his tone as he spoke.

"Of course you're listening now because I have the gun. You don't care about me. It's all about you isn't, it?" Ryan questioned bitterly. "Kevin would never do anything wrong. You should be more like your brother Ryan. Kevin gets along with others and pays attention Ryan, why can't you do that?"

"Ryan we were four years old." Kevin reminded him as his brother grew increasingly agitated. "I never intended on having them treat you that way."

"You always did enjoy being the favorite child though, didn't you? You liked knowing that you were always one up on me with your condescending attitude and your harsh judgements." Ryan spat in anger as tears formed in his eyes. "When you both left me there with mother, I knew how much you hated me. You left me there to die Kevin. You left me with her!"

"Ryan I wanted to help you, but I had no choice." Kevin insisted taking in a deep breath as his nightmares became a reality. "You don't know how many times I thought about you."

"But you never came back Kevin. You never did." Ryan cried out in agony holding his head with his free hand. "All those nights when I begged for someone to rescue me from her..........you never came.....you never did."

"Ryan, you have no idea how badly I wanted Victor to return for you." Kevin replied with tears in his eyes. "I came to Port Charles to help you when I discovered where you were."

"No, you came back to finish what she started...........what they all started. You wanted to destroy me, but I fooled you all. I'm the one destroying you now Kevin." Ryan laughed in hysteria. "You know it all came to me one night after you abandoned me here like you did. As I lay recooperating in the hospital, I thought to myself that one day you would feel what it was like to live my life...........to feel my pain and suffering.........."

"Ryan, I didn't walk out on you after I came to Port Charles. I came here to help you the last time we were here, remember?" Kevin insisted hoping to calm his brother down.

"Help me Kevin? You wanted to hurt me. That's all you ever wanted to do." Ryan shouted at him in anger. "I trusted you Kevin. I believed in you and you abandoned me just like everyone else."

"I'm here now Ryan. I'll listen to whatever it is that you have to say to me just let me get Lucy out of here." Kevin answered calmly as Lucy began to mumble softly.

"Lucy isn't going anywhere Kevin." Ryan shouted urging Kevin to sit down on the bench. "We have a lot of talking to do.......a lot of time has passed since we've been together like this and I don't want to waste another second."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Detective Garcia and his men circled the building searching for any signs of life as a shout came out from behind the building indicating a man down. He rushed over to find Scott Baldwin laying on the ground unconscious. He checked for a pulse realizing that Scott was still alive.
"This man needs medical attention right away." Garcia ordered as one of his men rushed off to call for the other ambulance to come around the back of the building. Garcia turned his attention back to Scott. "Scott? Can you hear me? Scott?"
"Ugh........." Scott moaned slowly slipping in and out of consciousness.
"Listen it's Detective Garcia. Can you hear me?" Garcia questioned trying to wake him up. "Scott can you tell me who did this to you?"
"Ga.....Garcia.........." Scott whispered as his eyelids fluttered.
"I'm right here Scott." Garcia answered as Scott's eyes opened. "Scott, I need to know what happened. Do you remember who did this to you?"
"It's so blurry................" Scott trailed off closing his eyes.
"Scott?" Garica questioned as the paramedics came around the corner with the gurney. "Scott can you hear me?"
"Eve......no.....Eve............." Scott moaned falling unconscious.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"We do have a lot to catch up on Ryan." Kevin agreed after he had placed Lucy down on the bench carefully. "Tell me whatever is on your mind."

"Of course you'll listen now, but look what I had to get your attention Kevin." Ryan snapped waving the gun at him. "All those people.............those people had to die in order for you to notice, didn't they Kevin? You know I must say that when I read that book, I knew that it was time for me to come back. That book was your way of bringing me back into your life again. It was your invitation and I gladly accepted."

"Ryan, that book was a work of fiction." Kevin replied inching towards his brother. "I never meant for it to become anything more than that."

"You don't have to explain Kevin. Deep down I knew that you had it in you and it was only a matter of time before you let it out." Ryan continued in amusement. "So tell me Kevin, how does it feel to be a murderer?"

"I didn't kill anyone Ryan." Kevin shouted back at him feeling his emotions taking control. "I'm not like you."

"Of course you are Kevin and that's what's frightening you. You're afraid to admit to yourself how much you lived through that book, but it's alright because I lived it for you down to the last detail." Ryan decided pleased with himself as his cold eyes stared into Kevin's knowing that he was striking a never in him. "I was a bit unclear of which way to proceed at first, but I executed perfectly, wouldn't you agree?"

"You murdered innocent people Ryan." Kevin shot back at him. "They didn't deserve to die."

"Of course they did.........afterall you said so yourself and wrote it down for the whole world to see." Ryan replied slipping into his delusional fantasy. "You and I made a great team didn't we? You laid out the plans and I followed through as it was meant to be. Brothers together for life, right Kevin?"

"I'm not like you." Kevin shouted unable to take any more of Ryan's taunting as he backed off. "I'm not responsible for this."

"Kevin, when are you going to get it into your head? We're born to be killers. It's in our blood." Ryan continued stepping towards Kevin.

"No, no. You're wrong Ryan." Kevin insisted trying to keep himself together.

"Am I Kevin?" Ryan questioned realizing that Kevin was too stubborn to allow what Ryan was saying to sink in. "You know I'm starting to feel neglected Kevin."

"You're insane." Kevin replied without a second thought.

"Insane huh?" Ryan laughed in amusement as he waved the gun in the air. "Well, funny thing here. The insane man has the gun in his hand, so who's in control Kevin? Huh? You know you're really starting to wear on my nerves. Maybe it's time for a wake up call."

Ryan aimed his gun at Kevin's chest as the coldness of his menacing stare penetrated Kevin's core causing chills to run down his spine. Amused by his brother's ability to stand up to him as Ryan pressed the gun to Kevin's chest, another dark thought crossed his mind.

"Doc, where are you?" Lucy coughed as she was overcome by chills.

"You know on second thought I'm getting very sick of her whining. I think that I'll shut her up now." Ryan replied aiming the gun at Lucy and firing.
Kevin felt the stinging sensation in his side as he noticed the dark red saturation flooding through his white shirt. Placing a finger through the small hole in his shirt, Kevin realized that he had been grazed by the bullet before knocking Ryan to the ground. He noticed that his brother had hit his head in the fall, and he took the opportunity to kick the gun across the room away from Ryan before turning to check on Lucy, who had fallen unconscious.

"Lucy," Kevin called out in a panic as he rushed to her side, "Oh God. Lucy, can you hear me? Lucy? We're getting out of here."

Lucy lay motionless on the bench as Kevin leaned forward to scoop her up in his arms. Suddenly he felt a hard thrust into his back as he spun around the find himself face to face with Ryan's enraged glare. He brought his hands up to shield his face from Ryan's attack as his brother threw another punch. With a grunt, Kevin seized Ryan's fist and the two fell to the floor wrestling one another, each throwing punches into the air as they inched towards the gun.

"You're not getting out of here that easily. I'm not giving you the opportunity to get away again." Ryan shouted slamming his fists into Kevin's abdomen as he pushed him onto the ground. "You're going to die here Kevin."

"I don't think so." Kevin retorted hitting Ryan's jaw with a left hook.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Scott, are you sure that you're up to walking?" Garcia questioned as Scott refused to go in the ambulance. "Maybe you should sit down."
"I'm fine. It's just a little bump on the head Garcia." Scott insisted glancing over at the remains of the building. "Right now you should be concentrating on finding out where Kevin, Lucy, and Eve are before that psychopath gets his hands on any of them."
"Scott, speaking of Eve, you called out to her earlier before you passed out. Do you have any idea why?" Garcia questioned wondering if perhaps Eve was behind Scott's accident since there was no reasonable explanation for her being there. "In fact, what were Eve and Chris doing here?"
"I don't know. Maybe they thought that they could do a better job tracking down the murderer than your men could since you've all seemed to be running around with your heads buried in the sand lately." Scott replied sarcastically holding his head
"Do you think that perhaps she came here to cover her tracks?" Garcia asked skeptically. "Perhaps, she came here to take out Ryan Chamberlain before he could reveal her involvement. Scott, do you remember who hit you?"
"Garcia, right now the only thing I can think about is getting those whom I care about as far away from this place as possible and if you're not going to do anything, then I'm sure as hell not going to sit here and do noth.........."
"Scott!" Eve called out rushing out from around the far side of the building as she threw her arms around him. "Thank God that you're all right. When I heard that last explosion I was so afraid that something had happened to you."
"Yeah, I'll bet you were." Garcia muttered taking note of how Eve was unharmed by the explosion.
"What's that supposed to mean Garcia?" Eve asked taking note of his sarcasm.
"He doesn't mean anything Eve. As for me, I'm fine, except for a little bump on the back of the head." Scott explained holding her tightly for a moment. "Are you all right?"
"I'm okay, but Lucy's not. She's trapped inside the building under a pillar. I tried to pull her out, but she was stuck. Scott, we need to go back in and help her." Eve started heading in the direction of the building.
"Eve, she's not in there anymore." Scott began to explain as he reached for her arm. "Kevin and I pulled her out before the last explosion."
"Thank God." Eve replied letting out a sigh of relief as she noticed the police officers and empty ambulance before them. "And Chris, he was shot."
"He's on his way to the hospital." Scott informed her quickly. "He'd lost a lot of blood when we'd found him, but I think that he'll be all right."
"I need to check on him." Eve insisted suddenly realizing that Kevin and Lucy were nowhere to be found. "Scott, where's Kevin and Lucy?"
"I.......we don't know." Scott explained to her. "The three of us separated as soon as we pulled Lucy out from underneath that pillar. Kevin took her outside to find help and I went searching for you."
"But if they went to get help, then why aren't they here with you and Garcia?" Eve questioned as Garcia took a step forward. "Where could they be?"
"I was hoping that you could give us an answer to the question Dr. Lambert." Garcia added glaring at her as he spoke. "Somehow I get the feeling that Ryan Chamberlain wasn't the only one behind these murders."
"Just what are you trying to imply Garcia? That I helped Ryan?" Eve questioned in disbelief. "I didn't even know the man up until about a half an hour ago when he shot my bestfriend."
"It just seems a little too coincidental that everything leads in your direction." Garcia continued feeling as if he was onto something as Eve's stared at him blankly. "Perhaps, you set this evening up as a way at getting back at Lucy for everything that's happened between the two of you."
"Oh please, is that the best you can come up with Detective?" Eve muttered as a loud bang rang out in the distance capturing her attention. "What was that?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Kevin looked up from Ryan and noticed Victor standing before them with the gun in hand. He had just fired off a warning shot to capture their attention as the two fought on the ground. Now aiming the gun at the two of them, Victor's expression grew tight and a scowl grew upon his face as he spoke up.

"That's enough." Victor insisted waving the gun for the two men to separate. "Monk, I want you to get off of your brother."

"Victor, what are you doing here?" Kevin questioned in confusion still frozen in place.

"Something that I should've done a long time ago." Victor explained aiming the gun at Ryan as Kevin inched away from him.

"Oh gee, look Kev, it's a family reunion." Ryan muttered sarcastically as he sat up on the floor. "So pop, how's it going? Come back to save your favorite son once again while leaving the other one to die?"

"Silence!" Victor warned directing his attention towards Kevin. "Monk, I want you to take Lucy and get out of here now."

"There you go again.......picking favorites, huh dad?" Ryan questioned in anger. "What, don't you love me any more? Still upset about your mistress? You know, the only regret I have about Jasmine Island is that I didn't push you down that cliff as well."

"Shut up!" Victor yelled glaring at him. "Monk, get out of here."

"But Victor............" Kevin began to protest suddenly very afraid of what might happen between Ryan and Victor.

"Monk, don't argue with me." Victor snapped stepping towards Ryan. "Lucy needs medical attention right away."

"Victor, I can't just leave you like this." Kevin insisted standing before his father.

"You don't have a choice." Victor explained aiming the gun at Kevin. "Now go before I'm forced to do something I'll regret."

"Kevin," Lucy mumbled slowly coming to as Kevin turned to her.

Without a word, Kevin scooped up Lucy and carried her away from the carousel never once looking back at his father or brother. He quickened his pace sensing that Lucy was going to slip back to unconsciousness as he noticed Garcia, Scott, and Eve up ahead with a stretcher alongside of them.

"Scott!" Kevin called out feeling a jabbing pain in his side as he held Lucy tighter.

"Oh my God Kevin." Eve gasped noticing the deep red stain soaking through his white shirt. "You're bleeding."

"I'll be fine, but Lucy needs help." Kevin explained as the paramedics rushed over to them.

"Where's Ryan?" Garcia questioned quickly.

"He's over by the carousel with Victor." Kevin informed him urgently. "Victor held Ryan off with a gun while Lucy and I made our escape. You have to help Victor."

"All right, let's go." Garcia called out to his men as Kevin placed Lucy on the stretcher.

"Doc," Lucy mumbled as her eyelids began fluttering.

"Lucy, everything is going to be all right." Kevin tried assuring her as he took her hand in his. "You're in good hands now and we're going to get you to the hospital."

"Kevin.......?" Scott trailed off approaching the two of them.

"Stay with her. I'm going to go help Victor." Kevin insisted as Lucy squeezed on his hand with all her might.

"Hey, Luce," Scott began sweeping her hair out of her face.

"No, Doc, don't leave me." Lucy pleaded opening her eyes in a panic. "I need you here with me Kevin. Don't go."

"Lucy, everything is going to be all right. I just need to check on Victor." Kevin replied as her grip on him tightened. "Lucy, you're safe now."

"Doc, I won't feel safe without you by my side. Please don't leave me." Lucy begged with tears in her eyes.

"I'll go for Victor." Scott spoke up unable to watch Lucy and Kevin for a minute longer.

"Scott........" Eve began sensing his pain as he took off. She watched him go as part of her longed to go after him, while the other half felt a duty to help Lucy. She moved past a couple of officers and stepped along side of Kevin. "Let me take a look at her."

"Kevin, what's happening?" Lucy questioned as she began to shiver. "Who's here?"

"Kevin, she's burning up." Eve announced realizing that Lucy needed to get to a hospital right away.

"Lucy, it's Eve. She's just going to check you out and make sure that everything's all right with you." Kevin tried assuring her as he felt her nails digging into his palm. "Lucy, please try to calm down."

"Eve's here?" Lucy questioned drawing in a deep breath as she spoke. "Make her go away Kevin. Please, I don't want her here after all she's done."

"Lucy, I'm not going to hurt you." Eve insisted as Lucy swung at her with her free hand. "I just want to help you."

"Kevin, make her leave!" Lucy pleaded now in tears. "Please Kevin, don't let her keep us apart."

"Lucy, Eve isn't going to take me away from you. I'm right here." Kevin tried assuring her as Eve looked at him with confusion. "Eve just wants to help you."

"Kevin, I saw you and Eve in your office and I found out everything. I heard you both talking about the baby Kevin." Lucy insisted thinking back to the memory of him holding Eve in his arms. "I know that she'll do anything that she can to take you away from me, but before you call it quits Doc, you need to know that I still love you and want this to work between us. There's so much at stake here."

"Lucy please," Kevin began with tears in his eyes as gazed her over knowing that he couldn't avoid the baby conversation any longer.

"Kevin, I know that I've made a lot of mistakes and you had every right to move on with Eve, but we can't just forget about the love we share, especially not now Kevin. I know what happened with Scott was so wrong, but before you decide to end this for your new life with Eve, there's something I need to tell you." Lucy explained now tearfully as she gazed up at his pained expression. "I know that you and Eve are preparing to start a family together with this baby, but there's something that I really must explain to you about our future Doc......."

"A family together?" Kevin repeated caught off guard by her remark. "Lucy, what are you talking about?"

"I know Eve is pregnant with your child." Lucy explained feeling as if a knife was being plunged into her heart with each word she spoke as she turned to gaze at Eve for a moment. "I know that you two are having a baby together."

"Lucy, where would you get an idea like that?" Kevin questioned still trying to make sense of what she was saying. "Eve and I are just friends. We never.......well, we never did that, let alone having a child together."

"You mean you're not the father of Eve's baby?" Lucy asked feeling as if a weight had been lifted off of her shoulders.

"Lucy, Eve isn't even pregnant." Kevin explained to her sensing that she was weakening.

"You aren't having a baby with my Doc?" Lucy questioned turning to Eve waiting for a confirmation of Kevin's words.

"Lucy, Kevin and I are just friends. That's all we've ever been." Eve explained as a smile crossed Lucy's lips.

"Lucy, we weren't talking about Eve in my office." Kevin added a bit choked up on his words. "We were talking about you."

"You mean, you know about the baby already?" Lucy questioned in surprise as she began to shiver once again.

"The hospital called the lighthouse and left a message for you on the answering machine. I came across it by mistake." Kevin confessed guiltily for overhearing something so personal about Lucy without her knowledge. "Lucy.............I never meant to intrude upon........"

"Doc, I'm so sorry that you had to find out that way." Lucy said noticing the sadness in his eyes. "I wanted to be the one to tell you the news myself. In fact, I was on the way to your office to explain everything to you before Ryan kidnapped me. I needed to tell you the news myself before........well, before you heard it from someone else."

Kevin turned away from her as he listened to her speak. He closed his eyes trying to disguise the hurt he was feeling knowing that Lucy was carrying Scott's child. He listened to the tone of her voice and noticed how excited she sounded even in her weakened condition.

"This is everything that you've ever hoped for Lucy," Kevin said fighting back tears as he spoke softly drawing in a breath as he pulled himself together, "and that's why I want you to let Eve check you out."

"All right," Lucy agreed as Eve moved in once more. "Doc, what's wrong?"

"I'm just worried about Victor. It's just been too long for him not to come out." Kevin insisted glancing back at Garcia's men. "I'm sure that Scott will be back soon so you can tell him the news about the baby."

"Doc, I'll tell Scott about this later, but right now all I need is you." Lucy insisted suddenly fearful for her child's life. "Doc, if I lose this baby....."

"Lucy, I won't let that happen." Kevin interrupted wiping the tears from her eyes for a moment before pulling back.

"You don't know how long I've dreamed of this." Lucy replied realizing that he appeared to be shutting her out. "Doc, what is it?"

"I think that we should get you into the ambulance." Kevin explained nodding at Eve who remained silent during this emotional exchange.

"Kevin, what is it?" She questioned in confusion wondering why he seemed so upset after hearing the news. "It's the baby, isn't it? You're upset about me being pregnant. Kevin, you have to believe me when I say that I didn't know about this until the other day or else I would've told you sooner."

"I believe you." Kevin said leaning towards her for a moment before turning his face to shield his emotions.

"Doc, wait!" she insisted reaching out to him as he pulled back from her. "Kevin, why are you shutting me out?"

"Lucy, listen, you need to relax right now and let the paramedics take care of you." Kevin insisted as a single shot rang out through the night. He turned to find his father moving out from behind the corner of the building approaching the group of officers waiting to make their move with blood on his hands.

"Ryan's dead." Victor announced as the gun fell to the ground.
