Chapter Twenty One
Kevin looked up from Ryan and noticed Victor standing before them with
the gun in hand. He had just fired off a warning shot to capture their
attention as the two fought on the ground. Now aiming the gun at the two
of them, Victor's expression grew tight and a scowl grew upon his face
as he spoke up.
"That's enough." Victor insisted waving the gun for the two men to separate.
"Monk, I want you to get off of your brother."
"Victor, what are you doing here?" Kevin questioned in confusion still
frozen in place.
"Something that I should've done a long time ago." Victor explained
aiming the gun at Ryan as Kevin inched away from him.
"Oh gee, look Kev, it's a family reunion." Ryan muttered sarcastically
as he sat up on the floor. "So pop, how's it going? Come back to save your
favorite son once again while leaving the other one to die?"
"Silence!" Victor warned directing his attention towards Kevin. "Monk,
I want you to take Lucy and get out of here now."
"There you go again.......picking favorites, huh dad?" Ryan questioned
in anger. "What, don't you love me any more? Still upset about your mistress?
You know, the only regret I have about Jasmine Island is that I didn't
push you down that cliff as well."
"Shut up!" Victor yelled glaring at him. "Monk, get out of here."
"But Victor............" Kevin began to protest suddenly very afraid
of what might happen between Ryan and Victor.
"Monk, don't argue with me." Victor snapped stepping towards Ryan. "Lucy
needs medical attention right away."
"Victor, I can't just leave you like this." Kevin insisted standing
before his father.
"You don't have a choice." Victor explained aiming the gun at Kevin.
"Now go before I'm forced to do something I'll regret."
"Kevin," Lucy mumbled slowly coming to as Kevin turned to her.
Without a word, Kevin scooped up Lucy and carried her away from the
carousel never once looking back at his father or brother. He quickened
his pace sensing that Lucy was going to slip back to unconsciousness as
he noticed Garcia, Scott, and Eve up ahead with a stretcher alongside of
them.
"Scott!" Kevin called out feeling a jabbing pain in his side as he held
Lucy tighter.
"Oh my God Kevin." Eve gasped noticing the deep red stain soaking through
his white shirt. "You're bleeding."
"I'll be fine, but Lucy needs help." Kevin explained as the paramedics
rushed over to them.
"Where's Ryan?" Garcia questioned quickly.
"He's over by the carousel with Victor." Kevin informed him urgently.
"Victor held Ryan off with a gun while Lucy and I made our escape. You
have to help Victor."
"All right, let's go." Garcia called out to his men as Kevin placed
Lucy on the stretcher.
"Doc," Lucy mumbled as her eyelids began fluttering.
"Lucy, everything is going to be all right." Kevin tried assuring her
as he took her hand in his. "You're in good hands now and we're going to
get you to the hospital."
"Kevin.......?" Scott trailed off approaching the two of them.
"Stay with her. I'm going to go help Victor." Kevin insisted as Lucy
squeezed on his hand with all her might.
"Hey, Luce," Scott began sweeping her hair out of her face.
"No, Doc, don't leave me." Lucy pleaded opening her eyes in a panic.
"I need you here with me Kevin. Don't go."
"Lucy, everything is going to be all right. I just need to check on
Victor." Kevin replied as her grip on him tightened. "Lucy, you're safe
now."
"Doc, I won't feel safe without you by my side. Please don't leave me."
Lucy begged with tears in her eyes.
"I'll go for Victor." Scott spoke up unable to watch Lucy and Kevin
for a minute longer.
"Scott........" Eve began sensing his pain as he took off. She watched
him go as part of her longed to go after him, while the other half felt
a duty to help Lucy. She moved past a couple of officers and stepped along
side of Kevin. "Let me take a look at her."
"Kevin, what's happening?" Lucy questioned as she began to shiver. "Who's
here?"
"Kevin, she's burning up." Eve announced realizing that Lucy needed
to get to a hospital right away.
"Lucy, it's Eve. She's just going to check you out and make sure that
everything's all right with you." Kevin tried assuring her as he felt her
nails digging into his palm. "Lucy, please try to calm down."
"Eve's here?" Lucy questioned drawing in a deep breath as she spoke.
"Make her go away Kevin. Please, I don't want her here after all she's
done."
"Lucy, I'm not going to hurt you." Eve insisted as Lucy swung at her
with her free hand. "I just want to help you."
"Kevin, make her leave!" Lucy pleaded now in tears. "Please Kevin, don't
let her keep us apart."
"Lucy, Eve isn't going to take me away from you. I'm right here." Kevin
tried assuring her as Eve looked at him with confusion. "Eve just wants
to help you."
"Kevin, I saw you and Eve in your office and I found out everything.
I heard you both talking about the baby Kevin." Lucy insisted thinking
back to the memory of him holding Eve in his arms. "I know that she'll
do anything that she can to take you away from me, but before you call
it quits Doc, you need to know that I still love you and want this to work
between us. There's so much at stake here."
"Lucy please," Kevin began with tears in his eyes as gazed her over
knowing that he couldn't avoid the baby conversation any longer.
"Kevin, I know that I've made a lot of mistakes and you had every right
to move on with Eve, but we can't just forget about the love we share,
especially not now Kevin. I know what happened with Scott was so wrong,
but before you decide to end this for your new life with Eve, there's something
I need to tell you." Lucy explained now tearfully as she gazed up at his
pained expression. "I know that you and Eve are preparing to start a family
together with this baby, but there's something that I really must explain
to you about our future Doc......."
"A family together?" Kevin repeated caught off guard by her remark.
"Lucy, what are you talking about?"
"I know Eve is pregnant with your child." Lucy explained feeling as
if a knife was being plunged into her heart with each word she spoke as
she turned to gaze at Eve for a moment. "I know that you two are having
a baby together."
"Lucy, where would you get an idea like that?" Kevin questioned still
trying to make sense of what she was saying. "Eve and I are just friends.
We never.......well, we never did that, let alone having a child together."
"You mean you're not the father of Eve's baby?" Lucy asked feeling as
if a weight had been lifted off of her shoulders.
"Lucy, Eve isn't even pregnant." Kevin explained to her sensing that
she was weakening.
"You aren't having a baby with my Doc?" Lucy questioned turning to Eve
waiting for a confirmation of Kevin's words.
"Lucy, Kevin and I are just friends. That's all we've ever been." Eve
explained as a smile crossed Lucy's lips.
"Lucy, we weren't talking about Eve in my office." Kevin added a bit
choked up on his words. "We were talking about you."
"You mean, you know about the baby already?" Lucy questioned in surprise
as she began to shiver once again.
"The hospital called the lighthouse and left a message for you on the
answering machine. I came across it by mistake." Kevin confessed guiltily
for overhearing something so personal about Lucy without her knowledge.
"Lucy.............I never meant to intrude upon........"
"Doc, I'm so sorry that you had to find out that way." Lucy said noticing
the sadness in his eyes. "I wanted to be the one to tell you the news myself.
In fact, I was on the way to your office to explain everything to you before
Ryan kidnapped me. I needed to tell you the news myself before........well,
before you heard it from someone else."
Kevin turned away from her as he listened to her speak. He closed his
eyes trying to disguise the hurt he was feeling knowing that Lucy was carrying
Scott's child. He listened to the tone of her voice and noticed how excited
she sounded even in her weakened condition.
"This is everything that you've ever hoped for Lucy," Kevin said fighting
back tears as he spoke softly drawing in a breath as he pulled himself
together, "and that's why I want you to let Eve check you out."
"All right," Lucy agreed as Eve moved in once more. "Doc, what's wrong?"
"I'm just worried about Victor. It's just been too long for him not
to come out." Kevin insisted glancing back at Garcia's men. "I'm sure that
Scott will be back soon so you can tell him the news about the baby."
"Doc, I'll tell Scott about this later, but right now all I need is
you." Lucy insisted suddenly fearful for her child's life. "Doc, if I lose
this baby....."
"Lucy, I won't let that happen." Kevin interrupted wiping the tears
from her eyes for a moment before pulling back.
"You don't know how long I've dreamed of this." Lucy replied realizing
that he appeared to be shutting her out. "Doc, what is it?"
"I think that we should get you into the ambulance." Kevin explained
nodding at Eve who remained silent during this emotional exchange.
"Kevin, what is it?" She questioned in confusion wondering why he seemed
so upset after hearing the news. "It's the baby, isn't it? You're upset
about me being pregnant. Kevin, you have to believe me when I say that
I didn't know about this until the other day or else I would've told you
sooner."
"I believe you." Kevin said leaning towards her for a moment before
turning his face to shield his emotions.
"Doc, wait!" she insisted reaching out to him as he pulled back from
her. "Kevin, why are you shutting me out?"
"Lucy, listen, you need to relax right now and let the paramedics take
care of you." Kevin insisted as a single shot rang out through the night.
He turned to find his father moving out from behind the corner of the building
approaching the group of officers waiting to make their move with blood
on his hands.
"Ryan's dead." Victor announced as the gun fell to the ground.
Chapter 22
Dr. Marisa Dupuie sat in her small office in frustration as she began
reviewing her notes for the following morning's board meeting when she
heard the sound of her pager vibrating on her desk top. With a sigh, she
reached for the buzzing object and realized that she was due in the emergency
room. Telling herself that she had only one week left before she left this
place behind, she managed to pull herself together long enough to prepair
for the job waiting for her in the ER. Setting the papers aside for the
time being, Marisa headed off to surgery eager to put the board meeting
behind her as she was greeted by one of the nurses.
"What's on the agenda tonight Susan?" Marisa questioned prepping herself
for surgery as the nurse filled her in on the patient's condition.
"A man was brought in about five minutes ago. Apparently he was shot
in the abdomen at close range up at that abandoned carnival. He's lost
a lot of blood and appears to have gone into convulsions........"
"All right," Marisa replied as she finished scrubbing up for surgery,
"let's get this show on the road."
"Doc," Lucy mumbled as Kevin sat beside her in the cramped ambulance.
"Doc, are you there?"
"Lucy, everything is going to be all right." Kevin tried assuring her
as they continued their bumpy ride to the hospital.
"Doc, I'm so cold." Lucy explained shivering beneath her paper thin
blanket. "What if something's wrong with the baby?"
"We're almost there Lucy." Kevin insisted noticing the small hospital
in the distance. "Just hang tight."
"Where's Victor?" Lucy questioned in a panic.
"He's with Detective Garcia." Kevin explained hoping to keep her mind
off the situation at hand.
"Doc, what happened?" Lucy asked fighting to keep her eyes open. "Who
was shot? Did Ryan hurt someone else?"
"Ryan's dead Lucy. He can't hurt anyone ever again." Kevin said remembering
the image of his brother's body being carried away as Victor was escorted
into Garcia's car.
"It's over? It's really over?" Lucy questioned feeling a sharp pain
in her side. "Oh, Doc. Something's wrong."
"Don't worry Lucy. Everything's going to be all right." Kevin tried
assuring her as they pulled into the hospital drive.
"Scott are you all right?" Eve questioned taking note of the grim silence
in the air between the two of them as they followed the ambulance to the
hospital.
"I'm just worried about Lucy." Scott confessed glancing over at Eve
for a brief second. "She just looked so pale back there."
"I'm sure that she'll be just fine." Eve decided remembering how Lucy
had pleaded for Kevin to accompany her in the ambulance.
"Will she Eve? How can you be so sure?" Scott questioned sharply as
Eve pulled into the drive. He noticed the pained expression on Eve's face
and regretted snapping at her. "Look Eve, I'm sorry, it's just that you
know I don't handle pressure too well especially when it come to someone
that I love."
"Lucy's going to be okay. She has a lot of people who care about her
very much." Eve replied trying to keep her pain from showing as Scott grew
silent.
"Eve, I didn't mean........." Scott trailed off not knowing what to
say as he saw the hurt in her face.
"No, Scott you don't have to explain. Your feelings for Lucy speak for
themselves." Eve continued fighting the urge to break into tears as she
thought of the child Lucy was carrying. "You and Lucy have a lifetime full
of memories that time won't ever be able to take away."
"Lucy and I did have our good times Eve," Scott agreed closing his eyes
as he spoke the words, "but Lucy's still in love with Kevin."
"Scott, you and Lucy have a future together." Eve insisted glancing
over at him with tears in her eyes. "While I believe that she loves Kevin,
you and Lucy share an unbreakable bond."
"Of course we do," Scott agreed thinking of Serena as Eve parked the
car, "but that doesn't mean that we have a future together. She wants to
be with Kevin now any fool can see that."
"Scott, Lucy's delirious right now." Eve reminded him as she debated
telling him about Lucy's pregnancy.
"She may be delirious Eve, but Kevin's in the ambulance with her and
I'm here with you." Scott added after a brief hesitation as he noticed
the sadness wash over Eve's features. "Eve, I didn't mean it that way."
"Of course you didn't." Eve managed to say feeling her heart sink as
she opened the car door. "We'd better get inside."
Dr. Dupuie had been out of surgery for precisely ten minutes when she'd
received the second page for her to return to emergency. She quickly scanned
the chart of the next patient and scanned the vague information.
"What seems to be the problem?" Dr. Dupuie questioned noticing a tired
looking man with sad brown eyes at the woman's side.
"Lucy, everything is going to be all right." he whispered stroking the
side of her face unaware of Marisa's presence. "I'm right here for you.
Do you hear me? I love you Lucy."
"I'm Dr. Dupuie." she spoke up catching him off guard as he glanced
over at her.
"She was just in an explosion and she's experiencing fever accompanied
with chills." he explained as Marisa moved in for a closer look.
"Has she experienced any other problems since the recent explosion?"
Marisa questioned as the woman softly mumbled to herself.
"She's passed out a few times.......and she's pregnant." he blurted
out on the verge of tears as Marisa turned to him. "Doctor, she's had a
history of miscarriages, and she's paranoid about losing this baby. If
she loses it, there's no telling what this will do to her......."
"I'll do the best that I can for her. Now why don't you go sit down
and rest in the waiting room?" Marisa suggested as the nurse escorted the
man out of the room.
"Can you tell me any information on Chris Ramsey please?" Eve questioned
as she stood before the nurse's station watching two women playing with
a deck of cards ignoring her questions. "Hello, excuse me?"
"What do you need?" the one nurse groaned tossing her cards down as
she looked up at Eve.
"I'm looking for a patient that's just been admitted." Eve explained
trying to hold back on her sarcasm. "His name is Chris Ramsey."
"That would be the gun shot wound Marge." the other nurse shot out as
she picked up a new hand of cards. "He's in room three eighteen."
"He's in room three eighteen." the first nurse repeated turning away
from Eve as her cards lie waiting for her.
"Any word on his condition?" Eve questioned with concern.
"Comatose I think, but I could be wrong." the second nurse answered
matter of fact as she reached for another card.
"Comatose?" Eve repeated in disbelief. "Are you sure about that?"
"Positive." the woman insisted slightly irritated with Eve's interruption
as she tapped her cards on the table top. "Come on Marge, it's your turn."
"Thanks for all your help." Eve muttered moving down the hall towards
Chris's room eager to see if he was all right as she found his room. She
pushed the door open and found him lying in the hospital bed closest to
the window sleeping. She tip toed over to his bed and took a seat next
to him watching his chest rise and fall with each breath he took. Leaning
in closer, she inspected his bandages for a brief moment before returning
back to a sitting position.
"Hey you," she whispered taking his cool hand in hers as she spoke to
him, "I was worried for a while there. You know, it was nice of you to
protect me back there Chris, but how many times have I told you not to
play the hero, huh? I could've lost you back there."
Eve paused for a moment before giving his hand another squeeze. She
noticed how pale his face appeared to be as she listened to the sounds
of his IV dripping. Feeling her eyes cloud over with tears, she drew in
another breath trying to keep herself together as her best friend lie helpless
before her.
"You know Chris, I think that you were right about Scott." Eve continued
with a sniffle as she spoke. "I think that he's still in love with Lucy,
and who could blame him considering that she's carrying his baby. You don't
have to say I told you so, because I should've listened to you sooner.
Oh, and get this, Lucy thought that I was pregnant.....with Kevin's baby
to add to it. Can you believe that? Me, pregnant?"
"It's kind of amusing when you think about it. I mean just the thought
of me bringing a child into the world makes me cringe. At this point in
my life, having a baby would be the last thing I'd need considering how
hectic things are. Plus, I don't think that our apartment is equiped with
childproofing, huh?" Eve smiled with a light chuckle noticing that Chris
was unresponsive. "Oh Chris, why won't you wake up and talk to me? I need
you right now more than ever. Hey, can you hear me? Chris, why don't you
open up your eyes, huh? I could use one of those great hugs of yours right
now. You know the ones that make the whole world go away when I'm having
a bad day. Chris......."
Kevin sat in the crowded hospital waiting room hoping to hear word on
Lucy as he glanced over at Victor, who was sitting glumly in the corner
of the room wrapped in a blanket after he'd finished the questioning session
with Garcia. He'd noticed that his father hadn't said one word since he'd
come out from behind the carousel with Ryan's blood on his hands and as
time passed by Kevin wondered if Victor was regressing once more after
his confrontation with Ryan. Kevin thought of how much pain his father
must be going through at the loss of his son once more even under such
extreme circumstances.
"What's taking so damn long in there?" Scott questioned breaking Kevin's
train of thoughts as he paced around the room. "I hate having to sit here
waiting for the news on Lucy like this. We should be doing something more
than waiting like this......"
"Scott, I know this is rough, but right now all we can do is hope that
word on Lucy comes back all right." Kevin insisted still unsure of how
to feel as he worried about Lucy's condition.
"I just don't understand why she was rushed into emergency for having
a fever." Scott continued hitting a wall. "I mean, you'd think that they'd
just patch her up and give her a couple of aspirin then head her off to
bed."
"Scott, maybe you should calm down." Kevin began noticing that Scott's
behavior was attracting attention.
"Calm down? How am I supposed to do that when my best friend is in there
and no one wants to give me any answers?" Scott continued in a fury as
he tapped his foot. "This is ridiculous."
"Scott, calm down." Victor spoke up breaking his silence. "I think that
we've all been through enough tonight."
"Because of your son." Scott snapped in anger. "If Ryan wouldn't have
come back to Port Charles on his killing spree, then we wouldn't be here
right now worried about Lucy."
"Ryan's dead now." Victor announced before slipping back into his silence.
"Scott, maybe you should get some air." Kevin suggested keeping an eye
on Victor as he spoke. "We've all had a rough night."
"You're right Kevin. Maybe some fresh air will do me good or maybe I'll
go look for Eve." Scott decided realizing that he should probably clear
up a few things with her. "You'll tell me when there's word on Lucy?"
"Of course." Kevin agreed watching Scott exit the waiting room before
turning his attention back to Victor. "Victor, hey, are you all right?"
"I killed my son Monk." Victor replied looking up at Kevin with tears in
his eyes. "I murdered him."
"Ryan was trying to kill us all Victor." Kevin insisted taking a seat
beside his father. "He would've killed Lucy and I if you hadn't intervened."
"Monk, I turned my back on him again." Victor announced sadly shaking
his head. "What kind of father murders his child in cold blood?"
"Victor, Ryan wasn't the same son you once knew." Kevin began not knowing
what to say to ease his father's grief.
"Oh, there you're wrong. He was exactly the same as the last time I
saw him Monk." Victor argued sadly as he glanced up at Kevin with sad eyes.
"It was just too hard for me to admit that I had a son who was nothing
more than pure evil."
"Victor, you saved so many lives tonight. You saved me, and Lucy and...."
Kevin trailed off drawing in a deep breath. ".....Lucy's baby."
"Lucy's baby?" Victor questioned in confusion suddenly sitting up straighter.
"You mean Lucy's pregnant??"
"Yeah," Kevin began shaking his head.
"I'm going to be a grandfather?" Victor asked as a smile crossed his
lips. "Oh Monk, why didn't you tell me sooner?"
"Well, you see," Kevin began to explain as Dr. Dupuie entered the waiting
room interrupting him. "Doctor, how is she?"
"She's going to be all right. Her fever's gone down and as far as I
can see, there aren't any serious injuries."
"And the baby?" Victor questioned jumping up from his seat. "How is
my grandchild?"
"The baby appears to be doing just fine." Marisa assured him with a
smile. "I'm scheduling an ultrasound for the morning just to be safe, but
from the looks of things, everything seems to check out okay."
"Can I see her?" Kevin questioned a bit too eagerly.
"Of course, she's been calling for you." Marisa smiled with a nod. "I'll
take you to her."
"Victor, I'll be right back." Kevin explained turning to his father.
"Are you going to be all right?"
"I'm fine. Now go to Lucy." Victor insisted watching his son follow
the doctor to Lucy's room as thoughts of Ryan's death disappeared for the
time being.
"You know Chris, you're not making this easy for me." Eve began squeezing
his hand once more. "I was kind of hoping that you'd be on your feet soon
so that we could get back to life as we once knew it. Now that these murders
are over, I was thinking that a celebration was in order. Maybe we could
kick back with a couple of martinis and hey, I'll even sit through one
of your football games if you open your eyes."
"Would you quit being so selfish and just wake up already Chris?" Eve
questioned in frustration as the tears filled in her eyes. "If I had known
that things were going to turn out like this, then I never would've dragged
you along with me to that horrible place. Chris, I'm so sorry for everything
that I've put you through these past couple months. If I could only change
things, then God knows that I would. Please Chris, don't do this to me.......not
now. I need you."
"Oh Chris," Eve cried out leaning over his bed as the tears fell from
her eyes and she realized that she couldn't bear to lose her best friend.
Scott Baldwin roamed the small hospital corridor trying to clear his
mind as he thought of the past years turning of events. He thought of almost
losing Serena to Rex and of all the suffering he had endured trying to
win his daughter back, he thought of his brief romantic interlude with
Eve and it's bitter ending after Serena's accident, and of his recent Florida
escapade with Lucy.
Shaking his head, Scott realized that life had become increasingly more
complicated as the days passed on. He thought of the past couple of days
in which he had come to terms about his feelings for both Lucy and Eve.
He had hoped that once he and Lucy had returned to Port Charles, that they'd
be able to continue their love affair, but then things had taken a turn
as Lucy's longingness for Kevin became more apparent to Scott and his own
feelings about Eve had come to surface once again. He thought of how he
and Eve never had been able to see things through with one another, as
the look of her sadness from earlier in the car clouded his mind once again.
"I need to get my head on straight before I screw anything else up."
Scott decided noticing an exit to the left of him as he stepped out onto
the balcony hoping to clear his head as he noticed a petite blonde woman
who appeared to be in deep thought standing before him, wearing a white
medical jacket. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt. I thought that
this was an exit."
"That's all right." she replied turning around realizing that it was
time for her to return to work when she noticed the familiar face standing
before her. "Scott?"
"Marisa?" Scott questioned in shock wondering if his eyes were playing
tricks on him.
Kevin entered Lucy's room not knowing what to expect as he noticed her
smiling at him. He closed the door behind him and slowly approached her
taking note of how tired she appeared to be.
"I was wondering when they'd let you back in here." she whispered as
he stood beside her bed. "I missed you."
"I missed you too." Kevin replied unable to contain his emotions as
he lowered himself to kiss her forehead.
"Oh Doc," Lucy breathed closing her eyes as he moved back. "The baby's
going to be all right."
"I heard that." Kevin added trying to remain positive as he touched
her flushed cheek.
"Doc, do you know what this means?" Lucy questioned glancing up at him.
"That you've finally gotten your miracle you've been praying for." Kevin
responded genuinely happy for Lucy even though his heart was breaking in
two.
"No Doc, you're wrong." Lucy insisted with a nod as she took his hand
in hers. "We've got our miracle."
"What?" Kevin questioned in confusion.
"You know, I figured it out while you were gone Doc. Believe me, I've
had a lot of time to think in between our ride to the hospital and my examination."
Lucy began with a yawn. "I noticed that you looked so sad before when we
talked about this baby, and now I finally understand why."
"You do?" Kevin began as a smile crossed her lips.
"Of course Doc. It's another misunderstanding." Lucy continued sure
of herself as she pulled together her strength. "When I walked over to
your office and heard you talking, I thought that it was you and Eve having
a baby, but it was me that you were talking about. It was our baby Doc."
"Our baby?" Kevin repeated in bewilderment. "Lucy, what are you saying?
Other than the night of the Halloween party, you and I haven't been together
since the night before our wedding when.........."
"......when our baby was conceived Doc." Lucy finished as tears of joy
filled in her eyes. "Doc, I didn't notice it before because I was under
a tremendous amount of stress in between the aftermath of the wedding and
my misadventure in Florida, but Ellen confirmed it. I've been pregnant
for a couple of months now."
"You mean you're having..........we're having....?" Kevin trailed off
suddenly overwhelmed with joy as he pulled her into his arms. "Oh Lucy."
"Oh Doc," Lucy cried out holding onto him tighter as tears of joy streamed
down her face.
"We're having a baby." Kevin announced looking down at her face as she
nodded unable to speak as her emotions took the best of her. "I can't believe
it........you and I are having a baby. Oh Lucy, I love you so much."
"I love you too Doc." Lucy finally managed to say happily before Kevin
held her closer to him for a slow emotional kiss. -
Chapter 23
Marisa knocked on the door before entering her patient's room only
to discover
the happy couple nestled together in the tiny hospital bed sleeping peacefully
as she debated whether or not to awaken them. She tucked her charts underneath
her right arm and began to move towards the door once more when she heard
a tired voice call out to her.
"Oh good morning doctor. I didn't realize that it was time to wake up
already." Lucy yawned nudging Kevin, who was still fast asleep. "Honey,
wake up. The doctor is here. Kevin?"
"What? Lucy, what is it?" Kevin began with a start opening his eyes
as it dawned on him where they were.
"The doctor is here." she repeated with a smile as she nodded in Marisa's
direction.
"Oh, right." Kevin replied pulling himself into a sitting position as
he straightened his wrinkled shirt. "Good morning doctor."
"Good morning. You know, if you'd like I can come back in at another
time and check on you." Marisa smiled as Kevin climbed out of the bed nearly
tripping over his own two feet.
"No, that's all right." Lucy replied brightly as Kevin regained his
composure eyeing Marisa hopefully. "So, do you have any good news for us?"
"Well, all the tests results from last night came back positive as far
as I can see, and after your ultrasound, we'll be able to know more." Marisa
explained noticing how exhausted Kevin looked. "Are you all right?"
"I'm fine." Kevin replied rubbing his stiff neck for a moment before
taking Lucy's hand in his own.
"Doc, you look horrible." Lucy added sensing that something was weighing
on Kevin's mind. "Why don't you get some breakfast?"
"No, I'm going to stay here with you for the ultrasound." Kevin insisted
squeezing her hand as he gazed into her concerned eyes.
"Actually, we're a bit short staffed around here this morning, so it'll
take at least half an hour for me to get the equipment set up." Marisa
added jotting down a couple notes on her papers. "I'd like to examine Lucy
once again though while we're waiting."
"Doc, why don't you please get something to eat?" Lucy insisted glancing
up at the tired brown eyes staring down at her. "You have to be famished
and I'm sure that Victor would love to hear from you as well. Knowing Victor,
he didn't sleep a wink last night out in the waiting room."
"Actually, I think that he's engaged in a poker game over in the lounge
with a couple of the people on staff." Marisa informed them with a laugh
turning to Kevin.
"He's playing poker?" Kevin questioned in bewilderment remembering his
father's darkened condition the last time he had seen him.
"You're father is quite the card shark." Marisa added brightly thinking
about how entertaining Victor Collins had proved to be through the long
night. "He's quite a charmer as well."
"That's Victor all right." Lucy chuckled as an image of Victor sitting
at a table wearing his poker face flashed through her mind before turning
to Kevin. "You'd better rescue him before he gets himself into trouble."
"I don't think he's got a thing to worry about out there." Marisa laughed
thinking back to the few minutes that she had caught of the poker game.
"He seemed to be doing quite well."
"In that case, I probably should check on him before his winning streak
comes to an abrupt ending." Kevin agreed realizing that it would do him
some good to walk off the stiffness in his muscles for a few minutes. He
leaned forward to kiss Lucy's forehead before whispering in her ear. "I'll
be right back."
"Take your time Doc. I'm not going anywhere." Lucy reminded him before
pulling him towards her for one last kiss.
Scott entered Chris's hospital room to find Eve half draped over her
roommate's bed as she slept in her chair. He noticed that Eve was holding
Chris's hand as the machines beeped their rhythmic tune with each breath
he took. Stepping in closer, Scott noticed faint pink blotches under Eve's
eyes, which he had attributed to her crying all night even though he hadn't
witnessed her shed a tear. He had come in around two in the morning to
check on her, but she had refused to leave Chris's side claiming that he
needed her there with him.
"Eve," Scott whispered reaching out and touching her soft, dark brown
hair as he moved in towards her. "Eve."
"Chris!" Eve called out waking up with a jolt sitting up straighter
in her chair.
"No, it's me." Scott replied placing a hand on her shoulder noticing
how wired up she was. "Hey, are you okay?"
"Scott, I'm sorry." Eve began feeling her heart beating in her throat
as she glanced up at him. "For a moment, I just thought that Chris had
waken up."
"Eve, you need get out of here for a while." Scott began taking note
of the tension in her face.
"No, I'm not leaving." Eve insisted shaking her head as she directed
her attention back to Chris. "I'm not leaving him alone."
"Eve, you can't do anything just sitting here. You need to take care
of yourself, maybe get a bite to eat."
"I can't leave him now Scott." Eve argued standing her ground. "If the
roles were reversed, he'd be the one sitting here by my side."
"Chris would want you to take care of yourself Eve." Scott reminded
her quickly as he urged her once again. "Come on. You and I can grab a
quick bite to eat down in the cafeteria."
"I'm not hungry." Eve insisted focusing on Chris.
"Eve, just give yourself some air." Scott pleaded with her as he glanced
over at Chris. "You're a doctor. You know these things take time and the
worst thing for a patient's loved ones to do is wear themselves down."
"Scott, I'm not leaving him." Eve snapped back at him pushing his hand
off of her shoulders.
"Eve," Scott began pulling her up to face him, "you have been through
one hell of an ordeal and you need to take care of yourself."
"Scott, I can't leave him. Can't you see that it's my fault that he's
like this?" Eve began tearfully as her strong guard fell apart once again.
"If I hadn't dragged him out there in the first place, then he wouldn't
be here like this right now fighting for his life."
"Eve, this isn't your fault." Scott insisted hugging her as she sobbed.
"Scott, if I had only followed my instincts and called you or Kevin
to check out the call instead of trying to play hero, then none of this
would've happened. Chris would be home enjoying life and sipping his martinis..........."
"Look, you can't spend your life on what ifs Eve." Scott added forcing
her to look at him. "If you spend the rest of your life thinking how you
could've changed just that one moment, just that one thing, then you'll
never be able to move forward. I know you Eve, and I know what this is
doing to you, but this isn't your fault. Chris agreed to put himself into
that position and no one could've known what the outcome would be."
"Chris put himself in that position because of me Scott. He put his
life on the line because of me." Eve insisted unable to fathom the idea
that she may never be able to have Chris back again as she turned to face
his seemingly lifeless body once more. "I can't lose him."
"Doc, I can't believe that this is really, really happening. I mean,
I knew that it was real when Ellen told me the news, but up until this
point it never really hit me as being a reality." Lucy rambled on overjoyed
as she listened to the sound of her child's heartbeat on the monitor. "It's
not just another one of my dreams. Can you hear that Doc?"
"I can hear it Lucy." Kevin replied holding her hand as he watched the
monitor eagerly anticipating a peek at his unborn child.
"I'm almost there." Marisa explained noticing the eager looks upon both
of their faces as she moved the machinery on Lucy's abdomen. "This little
one sure likes to move around I'll tell you that."
"Must take after it's mother in that department." Kevin added with a
chuckle as Lucy glanced up at him with smiling eyes.
"That's fine with me as long as he or she has their father's devastatingly
handsome good looks." Lucy added with tears in her eyes realizing how long
she had waited for this moment to come with Kevin when they were free to
be together sharing in the joys of their unborn child without any dark
clouds hanging above them.
"Oh my," Marisa gasped breaking the moment of silence between Lucy and
Kevin as she noticed something on the monitor.
"What is it?" Lucy questioned in a panic as Kevin protectively took
her hand in his once again. "Is something wrong with the baby?"
"No, no I assure you that it's nothing like that. The baby is doing
fine, or rather the babies I should say." Marisa smiled watching Kevin's
jaw drop.
Victor Collins waved good-bye to the ladies he had been playing blackjack
with and began pacing around the hospital waiting room wondering when he
would hear from Kevin again with word on Lucy. He thought of the past twenty
four hours between the tragedy of losing a son once again and the joy of
finding out that he was going to be a grandfather. While Victor was overcome
with happiness upon hearing Kevin and Lucy's good news, he was filled with
a sadness knowing that he had done one of the most unspeakable things that
a parent could ever do to their child no matter how inherently evil the
child had become.
"If only things hadn't been forced to end this way." Victor thought
to himself as he noticed Scott Baldwin approaching him from down the hallway.
Victor forced himself to push Ryan out of his mind long enough to speak
to Scott. "What are you still doing here? I thought that you'd gone home
after you disappeared once you'd finished talking to Detective Garcia."
"I was going to, but I was worried about both Lucy and Eve, so I decided
to stick around for a while." Scott explained quickly to Victor thinking
of how his encounter with Marisa had influenced his decision to stick around
as well.
"Gee, that's funny. You know for a while there, I'd wondered if you'd
even remembered who Eve was considering that you've spent most of your
time chasing Lucy around lately."
"Look Victor, I'm not in the mood for this little........whatever you
want to call it right now. What goes on between Eve and I is none of your
business." Scott explained hastily to Victor as he scanned the waiting
room for any sign of Kevin.
"She's a good girl Scott." Victor added putting his two cents in before
Scott shot him a glare.
"Look Victor, right now I'd really like to find out about Lucy instead
of arguing with you." Scott shot back at him trying to remain calm as he
spoke to Victor. "So any word on her condition yet?"
"She's fine Scott." Victor replied shrugging his shoulders as he spoke.
"Right now she and Monk are in there for her ultrasound."
"Ultrasound?" Scott repeated in confusion as he thought it over. "Victor,
when I spoke to you last night you mentioned that Lucy's fever had gone
down and that Kevin was staying with her, but you never mentioned anything
about her needing an ultrasound. Why would she need an ultrasound?"
"Think about it Scott." Victor replied rolling his eyes and shaking
his head. "Why do most women have ultrasounds?"
"I don't know. I'm not a doctor." Scott retorted as it suddenly dawned
on him. "Lucy's pregnant."
"Oh he does have a brain afterall." Victor muttered taking a seat across
the room as he began thumbing through the magazine rack.
"But if she's pregnant..........." Scott trailed off in confusion. "Victor,
how is that possible?"
"Scott, I thought that you already knew the story of the birds and the
bees, but if you need me to spell it out for you........" Victor began
in irritation.
"Why didn't she tell me before?" Scott questioned to himself as he paced
the room thinking it over before turning to Victor. "How long has she known?"
"Not long from what Monk told me." Victor explained thinking about his
brief conversation with Kevin. "I believe that she found out after she
came back from Florida."
"After Florida?" Scott repeated suddenly struck with an eerie feeling
as their brief moment of passion flashed through his mind. "Does that mean...........?"
"Twins?" Kevin questioned in amazement as he glanced over at the monitor
watching the two tiny figures move about inside Lucy's womb. "I don't believe
this. Lucy we're having twins."
"Doc, isn't it wonderful?" Lucy began with tears in her eyes as she
admired the two babies growing inside of her. "Look at our babies."
"Oh Lucy," Kevin sighed on the verge of tears as he gazed at the realization
that the symbol of the love that he shared with Lucy was brought to life
before his very eyes.
"Doc, listen to their hearts beating........so strong and powerful."
Lucy insisted as a single tear escaped down her face. "I just knew that
God wouldn't let me lose them back in that awful place. They're fighters
Doc."
"Just like their mother." Kevin added realizing that he had never loved
Lucy more than he did at that very moment as he wrapped an arm around her
shoulders.
"We're just about finished in here." Marisa began packing up the machinery
sensing that Kevin and Lucy needed a moment alone. "I'll just take this
out of here and see if I can get a video tape ready for you."
"Would you really do that?" Lucy asked in amazement wanting to savor
the moment as long as she could.
"Of course I can Lucy." Marisa replied with a smile eager to please
the happy couple as she realized how much in love they appeared to be.
"I'll start working on it right away."
"Thank you so much." Lucy smiled as she and Kevin pulled into an embrace.
Marisa packed up as quietly as possible hoping to give Kevin and Lucy
space to enjoy the miracle together. She remembered how she had gotten
a fax earlier in the morning with Lucy Coe's medical history from Dr. Ellen
Burgess and her heart went out to the woman who had endured so much pain
and suffering in her attempt to have children. She said a silent prayer
as she packed up the machinery that the loving couple's happiness remain
and that their children would be carried to term.
"Doc, all of our prayers have been answered." Lucy spoke up as Marisa
made her exit. "We're really going to start a family together and hopefully
this time everything will turn out all right. I don't want to lose these
two Doc."
"Lucy, I promise you that from this moment on, we're going to do all
that we can to ensure that it doesn't happen." Kevin assured her as he
stroked her soft hair. "This time, we're going to put fate into our own
hands."
"You mean that?" Lucy questioned with tears in her eyes as she thought
about the last child they had lost.
"Lucy, we're going to think positive." Kevin insisted remembering the
ultrasound. "In fact, the only worries you and I are going to have are
trying to get as much sleep as possible before we'll be enduring many sleepless
nights in between feedings and changings."
"Oh Doc, I can't wait." Lucy beamed realizing that having the children
with Kevin meant more to her than anything else in her life.
"You know, you could end this right now and wake up." Eve insisted stroking
the side of Chris's face as she sat upon the corner of his hospital bed.
"I know that you've been trying to get my undivided attention about something
for weeks, but I can assure you that there are easier ways to do it. In
fact, if you just open your eyes I'm all ears right now. I promise that
I won't go running off on you, if you just come back to me Chris."
Eve paused for a moment staring over his features as she thought of
how much she wished that he would just wake up. She thought of the moment
in the carnival where Ryan had shot Chris and how he'd shooed her away
in order to save herself. Now looking at him so helpless before her, she
wished that she would've been the one who'd been shot instead of him. Now
trying to suppress the tears forming in her eyes, she reached for Chris's
hand and continued to speak to him.
"Well, I guess that I'm going to have to keep talking if you're not
going to wake up." Eve added with a sniffle. "Hey, you remember the time
you made dinner for me when I was trying to prove that Lucy was behind
my accident with Serena? I never told you how much that meant to me because
I was so wrapped up in proving my innocence, but Chris that was very special.
You always find a way to make me feel better about things."
Eve closed her eyes for a moment and envisioned the night in her head
as she let out a sigh. Suddenly her mind was filled with images of the
night of the Halloween party after she had returned home with Chris.
"I can't believe that things turned out like this." Eve muttered tossing
her bonnet onto the couch. "First Kevin leaves and then Scott decides to
talk about........"
"Hey, Eve would you just relax?" Chris questioned coming up from behind
her and placing his hands upon her shoulders. "Tonight wasn't a total loss."
"Oh really?" she questioned turning to face him. "I'd have to say it's
getting there. I mean, think about it Chris. I lost two dates for tonight."
"But you ended up with your original date." Chris added brightly with
a smirk. "Come on, you have to admit that you'd rather spending the evening
with me to Collins any day."
"Oh please," Eve muttered rolling her eyes as she crossed the room.
"You know you enjoyed yourself with me tonight." Chris continued confidently
as he took a seat on the back of the couch. "Did I tell you how cute that
costume looks on you?"
"Speaking of costumes, what were you thinking?" Eve questioned in horror
as she gazed over the dress. "Little Bo Peep?"
"I thought that you'd be adorable." Chris explained brightly. "Pink
and frilly just seemed to be a change for you."
"Pink and frilly is definitely a change I'm not into." Eve explained
shaking her head in disgust. "However, I did learn one important thing
tonight."
"What's that?" Chris questioned moving towards her.
"Never to let you pick out my wardrobe again." Eve chuckled as she struggled
to unzip the back of her dress.
"Here, let me help you with that." Chris insisted reaching for her zipper
as he unzipped the dress letting his fingers linger on her back for a couple
of seconds.
"Thanks." Eve replied turning to face him once more as their eyes locked
for a brief moment.
"No problem." Chris breathed leaning in towards her as she turned away.
"You know, I think that I'm going to slip into something a bit more
comfortable." Eve added quickly as Chris took a step back. "Maybe we could
catch a late show on television or something."
"Sure, I'll think that Godzilla is on." Chris replied with a smile as
he reached for the television guide. "Hey, I'll even make some popcorn."
"Popcorn sounds great." Eve smiled leaving to change out of her costume.
"Godzilla was awful too. In fact, I can't believe that I sat through
that movie with you. Next time around, I'll pick the movie." Eve added
opening her eyes half expecting to see Chris smiling up at her, but was
greeted with nothing but silence. "Oh Chris."
Scott entered Lucy's room only to discover her fast asleep as he stood
in awe of her wondering about everything that had happened between them.
He moved in to take a closer look at her before turning around to leave
her alone. He reached for the door knob ready to exit when he stopped himself
mid-step and faced her once again.
"Oh Lucy," Scott began moving to her side as he watched her chest rise
and fall with each breath she took, "why didn't you say something?"
"Pal?" Lucy questioned as her eyelids fluttered open and she smiled
at Scott. "Pal, it is you."
"Hey," Scott smiled taking her hand in his as he took a seat next to
her bed, "how are you feeling this morning?"
"Tired." Lucy replied with a yawn as she gazed him over. "How are you?"
"I'm doing okay." Scott added glancing at her beautiful face. "Nothing
out of the ordinary."
"Kevin told me that someone attacked you last night." Lucy continued
with concern in her voice.
"It was nothing. Someone just beaned me over the head with a bottle
or something." Scott explained to her quickly. "But, hey, you know me.
I'm resilient, so I just kind of bounced back right away."
"Did you have someone check you out?" Lucy questioned noticing how pale
he looked.
"Nah, you know how I feel about seeing doctors." Scott smiled at her.
"Yeah, well sometimes even tough guys like you need to get checked out
Scott." Lucy insisted giving his hand a squeeze as he grew unusually silent.
"Pal, what is it?"
"Lucy, I talked to Victor out in the lobby a little while ago," Scott
began uneasily as he stared into her eyes, "and he told me about your ultrasound."
"Oh," Lucy replied as she grew silent.
"Lucy, why didn't you tell me?" Scott questioned with tears in his eyes.
"You know how much I care about you and how important this child is. Lucy,
no matter what has happened, you know that I'd always be here for you."
"Scott, listen, I just didn't want you to......." Lucy began trying
to find the right words.
"Lucy, look, I know that you and I have had our share of obstacles to
overcome, but down in Florida, what happened between us was special and
I don't regret it for one minute. In fact, this child just verifies the
bond between us Lucy." Scott continued choked up with emotion as he gazed
into her sad eyes. "I know that you had your doubts about us, but maybe
this is one of those cosmic signs that we're meant to be together."
"Scott," Lucy began tearfully seeing the look of love in Scott's eyes
as he spoke, "I'm so sorry, but there's something you need to know."
"Lucy, before you say another word, I need you to know that I'm aware
of your feelings for Kevin, but that won't keep me from being a part of
this child's life." Scott added quickly hoping to keep himself in Lucy's
life.
"Scott, your not the father." Lucy blurted out as he looked at her in
bewilderment.
"What do you mean I'm not the father?" Scott questioned in confusion.
"Of course I'm the father Lucy. You and I made love in Florida........"
"Scott, I was pregnant before we went down to Florida." Lucy continued
feeling her heart break in two as she spoke to him. "I'd been pregnant
for a while, but I just didn't know it until Ellen confirmed it the other
day."
"But........." Scott trailed off feeling his heart sink.
"There had been signs for a while, but I'd refused to see them." Lucy
explained wanting to ease his pain as she spoke. "You see Kevin and I were
together before our wedding and well..........."
"So Kevin's the father?" Scott questioned with a nod trying to hide
his disappointment. "Well, then I guess everything worked out for the best,
didn't it?"
"Scott, pal," Lucy began at a loss for words. "I'm sorry."
"No Lucy, this is for the best." Scott insisted pulling all of his strength
together as he looked at her. "We were just kidding ourselves to think
that something could come of our little escapade in Florida."
"That time together meant so much to me Scott and I'll cherish it forever."
Lucy added hoping that Scott would realize that he meant a lot to her.
"So will I Lucy, but it's time to move on now. You and Kevin need to
start thinking about this family you're starting together." Scott said
with a nod as the tears filled in his eyes. "Hey, we'll always be pals
though."
"The bestest pals." Lucy replied tearfully as she squeezed his hand.
"I love you Lucy." Scott whispered as she moved in for a hug.
"I love you too Pal." Lucy insisted holding him tighter.
Chapter 24
Kevin stepped out of the cafeteria holding two cups of coffee in hand
as he noticed Eve standing by the window in one of the rooms to the left
of him. He entered the room realizing that he hadn't spoken to her since
before the ambulance ride. As he slipped inside the doorway, he listened
to the sounds of the machines beeping that Chris was hooked up to. Setting
one of the coffees down on the table in the corner of the room, he approached
Eve, who was seemingly lost in her own world as she looked out into the
morning below.
"Hey you," Kevin called out interrupting her thoughts as she turned
to face him.
"Kevin," she smiled weakly as she looked at him.
"Here, you look like you could use this." Kevin began with concern as
he handed her the styrofoam cup.
"Thanks Kevin." Eve replied gladly accepting the coffee as she ran her
fingers through her tussled hair. "How's Lucy doing?"
"Her fever broke late last night and everything looks good except for
a sprained ankle, so she's being released later this morning. How are you
holding up?" Kevin questioned taking note of the dark circles under her
eyes. "You look exhausted Eve. Maybe you should try getting some rest for
a while."
"I can't sleep with Chris in this condition." Eve informed him sadly
as she stepped towards Chris. "I keep expecting him to wake up at any moment
and I want to be here for him when that time arrives. I owe him so much
after putting him in this position."
"Eve, you can't torture yourself like this." Kevin began sensing her
guilt as tears filled in her eyes. "This isn't your fault."
"Kevin, I'm the one who took him to that place. It was me that put his
life in danger in the first place." Eve began with a sniffle as she began
to cry. "If I hadn't been so stupid to lead him straight to Ryan like that,
then there's no telling how things could've turned out......"
"Eve, you thought that you were helping a friend in need." Kevin began
hugging her as she cried. "Ryan was a very deceitful person and you couldn't
have had any indication that it wasn't me who called you."
"But I should've known Kevin." Eve insisted in a sob as she shook her
head. "Scott made me promise to stay at the apartment until everything
was over, but no, I just couldn't listen. I just had to be a hero, and
when Ryan called me, I just rushed over to that carnival as fast as I could
to help not thinking about the repercussions of my actions. Not only did
I put Chris's life on the line, but everyone else's as well once Ryan got
a hold of my gun. I mean, you got shot too for God's sake."
"Eve, I was grazed with a bullet." Kevin reminded her quickly.
"But that never should've happened Kevin." Eve interrupted in frustration.
"If only I had been able to piece things together sooner, then Ryan would
be behind bars and everyone would be fine."
"Eve, Ryan fooled me too." Kevin insisted thinking of his brother's
supposed death years ago. "I watched him burn to death in that horrible
place and believed that he was dead. In fact, since that moment when I
witnessed his 'death' I'd had nightmares feeling as if Ryan's reign of
terror was far from over, but never in a million years could I have fathomed
the thought of him coming back to Port Charles alive after all this time.
If I had known that writing that stupid book would've drawn him out of
hiding like that, then I never would've written it and those innocent lives
would've been spared. In fact, as time goes on, I keep trying to tell myself
that it was all Ryan who caused everyone so much pain and suffering, but
when it comes down to it, I realize that I'm the one who gave him the ammunition
for his murdering spree. So many terrible things have happened because
of that book and if I only would've thought things through, then none of
this would've happened."
"Kevin, you had no idea that it was going to happen this way when you
wrote General Homicide." Eve began thinking it over as his face clouded
over. "You're no more to blame for this than anyone else involved. Kevin,
you were a victim like everyone else in this."
"I keep telling myself that's how it was Eve, but something just doesn't
feel right about all of this." Kevin confessed in frustration as he moved
across the room gazing out the frost covered window. "I still have so many
questions about all of this. Part of me wants to know why and with Ryan
dead I know that I'll never get those answers."
"So Garcia, you're still working on the General Homicide case huh?"
Officer Thompson called out to him. "Who'd have thought that Ryan Chamberlain
was behind it all? Not me. That's for sure."
"Well, I guess we all were thrown for a loop with this one." Garcia
added putting together the witness accounts of the showdown at the carnival.
"I'm just glad that it's all over." Officer Thompson began with a yawn
as he checked the time. "I think that I'm going to head home now if we're
all through here."
"Alright," Garcia waved picking up Scott Baldwin's statement and reviewing
it before reading Kevin's statement. "Hold on a second."
"What is it?" Officer Thompson questioned turning to face Garcia.
"Something just doesn't add up." Garcia began holding up both statements
in hand.
"How so?" Officer Thompson asked taking a seat on the desk top.
"Well, Kevin Collins claims that around nine fifteen Ryan Chamberlain
had held him and Lucy Coe at gunpoint, yet Scott Baldwin claims that he
was hit from behind around nine fifteen." Garcia continued with a puzzled
expression.
"Maybe their timing was a bit off after the explosion." Officer Thompson
suggested eager to leave the General Homicide case behind. "Chamberlain
could've found Mr. Baldwin sneaking around outside and hit him over the
head before going after Mr. Collins and Ms. Coe."
"He could've, but answer me one question." Garcia began leaning back
in his chair. "We know that Ryan Chamberlain was ruthless during the General
Homicide murders brutally murdering each of his victims. Also we know that
he was armed from the moment that he shot Chris Ramsey, and we also know
that he fired on Kevin Collins, which proves that wasn't afraid to shoot
on anyone who stood in his way. So the question is why didn't he shoot
Scott Baldwin after finding him snooping through the fairgrounds? Why hit
him on the head, when he could have easily killed him?"
"Maybe he was being cautious seeing that he knew we were looking for
him." Officer Thompson suggested quickly.
"Or maybe it wasn't Ryan who hit Scott Baldwin over the head." Garcia
insisted as he was struck with an eerie feeling. "Thompson, something's
telling me that there's more than meets the eye here and I'm going to get
down to the bottom of it."
