The sun's scorching rays pounded down upon Eve Lambert as she cocked her head back to avert her gaze from the blinding luminance before her. Gazing off into the distance, she noticed the endless mounds of red toned clay surrounding her without any traces of green in sight. She drew in a breath taking in the sweltering humidity in the air as she pressed her back up against the leather seat of the convertible only to feel the warmth burn at her flesh. With a moan, she opened the car door hearing it creak loudly as she stepped out into this arid desert following the sharp banging sounds coming from the underneath the hood. "It's just as I thought. The radiator's over heated." Chris explained wiping the sweat from his brow before standing upright to meet her agitated gaze. With a sigh, he slammed the hood shut listening to the clang it made before turning to her once again. "It could be worse you know." "How could it be Chris?" Eve questioned with a huff not holding back as she thought of what was waiting back for her in Port Charles. "I'm supposed to marry Kevin in less than forty eight hours and here we are stuck in the middle of no where destined to become buzzard food to top things off. I knew this was a bad idea." "Eve, come on would you lighten up a bit?" Chris questioned noticing the way her full, red lips curled up when she frowned. "I'll just call for a tow truck and before you know it you'll be on your way to marry Doctor Shrinky-dink soon enough." "You're cell phone died a half an hour ago when you first tried calling for help, or have you forgotten that already?" Eve shot back in irritation silently wishing she hadn't opted to wear dark clothing as she felt the loose material of her shirt sticking to her perspiration soaked body. "Look Lambert if you quit your whining, then I promise to find us a way out of this. All right?" Chris snapped back at her suddenly irritated "Good, because I don't know how much more of this I can take." Eve snapped spinning on her heel and returning to the passenger side of the car. Chris watched her closely taking in the sight of how her hips swiveled in perfect rhythm and how just the sight of her brought chills down his spine in this otherwise sweltering weather. He watched her bronzed legs sticking out from the passenger side door as she let out an exaggerated groan. Quickly reminding himself that now in the middle of the desert was not the time to fantasize about Eve, he walked around the side of the car coming face to face with her seeing her slumped over in her seat. "Hey," Chris started kneeling down before her, "we're going to work this out. Don't worry." "Chris, if you haven't noticed you and I are in the middle of no where with no hope of being found. I haven't seen a car on this route all day even before we just happened to break down on the side of the road here. This doesn't look good at all." "The eternal pessimist. What am I going to do with you Lambert?" Chris responded shaking his head in disapproval before reaching out to cup her chin in his large hand hoping to ease some of her concern as he gazed into her beautiful doe eyes thinking of how long he'd desperately wanted to be this close to her touching her just like this, but no, he couldn't think like this. Eve was about to married to Kevin Collins and his chance to be with her was long gone. "Whatever it is, could you make it quick and painless?" Eve questioned forcing a small grin looking up to meet his gaze for a moment sensing there was something more behind his eyes than he was letting on. Perhaps he was just as worried as she was, but with that smile, no one would ever be able to tell. Well, almost no one. Eve could see there was so much more to Chris...so much more that he would never let the world see. A man who for so long appeared to be ruthless and indifferent towards the world around him yet loving and loyal at the same time. A man who could..... "No, you mustn't think that way." Eve thought to herself so afraid that he would see into her soul as she looked away breaking the silent staring match that was going on between them for the past few seconds. Clearing her throat, she glanced back up at him for a brief moment only to feel her cheeks flushing with a strange combination of embarrassment and of the heat. "I just want to get back home Chris." "I'll get you back there." Chris replied taking note of Eve's uneasiness wondering if perhaps she had been thinking the same thing as him during their instance of thick silence. Despite the circumstances, Chris had to admit that he was secretly thankful for this little detour that had been thrown in their direction. When he'd heard the news of her engagement to Kevin, he'd been frantic, a nervous wreak thinking that he'd never be able to show her the love he'd concealed for so long, the desire he'd kept hidden from her all this time, but upon hearing word of the medical convention, Chris jumped at the opportunity to spend the time alone with Eve if only for a couple of days. This entire time he had been hoping to savor every last moment of togetherness with Eve before he'd lost her forever. So many times back at the hotel, he'd been tempted to find the strength to walk up to her door and confess all to her laying it out on the line, but at that pivotal moment when it was now or never, he'd chickened out just as he always had done in the past loving her too much to spoil the happiness she felt. He'd loved her too much for too long to destroy the one good thing in her life, but now looking at her so confused and distressed, he wanted to say the words his heart so longed to speak if only to ease her mind knowing that she wasn't alone at such a time, but he knew that in doing so it would be out of his own selfishness and he couldn't do that to her. It would only confuse her even more. Still he couldn't help but think about the events leading up to this point in time starting with the beginning of their journey last Thursday..... ~~Thursday~~ Chris loaded Eve's suitcases into the back of the Jeep as he looked at his own two bags that were sitting in the back of the Jeep. What had initially been supposed to be a two day convention had turned into a nightmare when Eve had left the lighthouse with seven suitcases to last her through the time she was away from Kevin. He'd teased her mildly, yet still had to laugh at the differences between women and men in general when it came to packing things to go on a trip. Women were always so worried about running out of things and men didn't really mind if they had to wear something more than once before they washed it. Chris had thought that he was bringing too much when he had carried his own two bags to the van, yet compared to Eve's luggage, he didn't have much of anything. He figured that women's fetish with clothes was yet another mystery that he was never to understand. He looked at everything once again and shut the Jeep's red door. "Are you all set now?" Chris asked moved into the driver's seat. "I'm ready." Eve said smiling as she fastened her seatbelt. "Good." Chris said starting the engine and putting on a pair of sunglasses. "It's about twelve now and it shouldn't take too long for us to get there." "As long as we have each other to keep company, I don't think that the ride will seem that long. I think that it might even be fun." Eve smiled turning on the radio. "I'm sure that it will be great. We can get to know each other better than we already do." Chris smiled at her in amusement. "Who knows? I might even have a dark side you haven't been introduced to yet." "That should be interesting." Eve said taking a look at him. He was chewing on a piece of red licorice and taking a look at himself in the rear view mirror. "I'm sure that I will learn things about you that I really don't want to know." "Let's get started." Chris said shifting into drive as he ignored her last comment. "Wait!" Eve said suddenly. "I forgot something back inside." "I don't think that the sink and the refrigerator are going to fit in the back in the van with all that you have packed." Chris teased her as he shifted back into park. "I'll be right back." she said jumping out of the Jeep. Eve ran into her apartment and turned on television. She had to check the weather channel to make sure that the weather was going to work with her. She knew that the trip wouldn't be favorable if the weather didn't agree with her. She was relieved to see that the temperatures for the week were to be high. It was supposed to be sunshine all week in California. She shut off her television and returned to the Jeep. "Did you find what you needed?" Chris asked when she got back into the car. "Yes, I did." she smiled as Chris began to shift into drive again. "Are you sure?" he asked as he looked for another few bags that she might have brought down. "I have everything that I need." she assured him as he drove away as she looked back at the lighthouse watching it slowly shrinking as they drove further away. Chris noticed the sad puppy dog look on her face no doubt thinking about her precious Kevin Collins none the less as they drove away. He knew that when she came back there things wouldn't ever be the same again and seeing the look on her face, he realized his life would be different and everything that he had been doing for the past five years with loving her wouldn't be as it was before they left. Realizing that if things went well as he hoped, Eve might never live in that place again, but this was his life he was talking about and while he knew that he needed to be with Eve, he could see her heart was with Kevin. He watched as she took one last, long glance at the lighthouse before she looked forward at the highway ahead of them. Chris knew that the future was all that mattered from that point on and he intended on making the most of it one way or the other. ************************************************** Two hours into the ride Eve decided that she was bored. Chris hadn't been very talkative seeming a bit aloof and she was tired of fidgeting with the radio. She realized that she should go into the back of the Jeep to look for a book that she had packed so that she could keep busy for a while. She looked at Chris who seemed to be interested in the road ahead of him and decided that she wouldn't bother telling him what she was doing. She took off her seat belt and journeyed into the back of the Jeep. "What are you doing?" Chris asked noticing her she got up from her seat. "I'm looking for something that I packed." Eve called out from the back seat. "What are you looking for?" Chris asked as her peered into the rearview mirror to look at her. "A book that was in one of my suitcases." she replied as she started to lean over the backseat. "Be careful back there." he cautioned her. "I have everything arranged in a way so that things won't fall over." "I don't see what the big deal is." she said burying her head behind the seat. "If you aren't careful the suitcases could..." he began as all of the suitcases crashed on top of Eve. He tried not to laugh because he knew that it wasn't funny, but all he could do was chuckle at the sight of her buried under the suitcases. "Are you okay back there?" "I'm fine." Eve said with a muffled sound from underneath all of the suitcases. "Hold on a minute." Chris said pulling the van over to the side of the road. "Why are you stopping?" Eve asked from underneath her crypt of suitcases. "Let me help you out." Chris said pulling her out from underneath the suitcases. "I said that I was fine. Why did you stop?" she asked him seriously. "I thought that you needed a hand getting out to this mess." he said pointing to the pile that she had just been under. "I didn't need for you to stop." she replied harshly. "What I need from you is for you to drive. The sooner that we get this convention over with, then the sooner I will be back to my fiancee." "Sorry." he said sarcastically as he moved back into the driver's seat starting the Jeep once more. "What were you saying before?" she asked him when she finally got back into her seat again. "I was just going to warn you that the bags might fall over, but it doesn't matter now." he said staring at the road. He didn't like the attitude that she was giving him for trying to help her out. He didn't know why she had to be so difficult. "Did you find what you were looking for?" "No, I didn't find it, but I decided that I didn't really want it in the first place." she said stubbornly. "That's good to know." Chris said looking at Eve deciding that he didn't want to get into a fight with her in the first few hours of their trip, so he kept his mouth shut. After about twenty minutes of silence, Eve stopped sulking and realized that Chris seemed distant towards her. She decided that it wasn't going to be a pleasant trip if she was going to be yelling at him everytime that he wanted to help her out. She decided that she should break the ice. "Chris," she called as she watched him drive. "What?" he asked trying not to let his anger show. "I'm sorry for being a bitch back there." she apologized. "I am just very anxious to see Kevin again with the wedding just around the corner. There was so much left undone when I left, but I know that I shouldn't take my frustrations out on you." "It's allright." he said letting his anger leave him. "I should be used to you when you are in one of your moods. I have put up with them for so many years already." "Hey," she said in her defense, "I'm not that bad." "I know." he laughed at the look on her face. "You're worse sometimes." "I love you too." she said jokingly as she looked back at the road. She knew that everything with Chris was going to be okay once the two of them had started joking again since she'd known that he wasn't the type of guy to stay angry with her for very long. *********************************************** Six hours into the drive Eve drifted off to sleep while Chris watched her out of the corner of his eye. Deciding to make the most of this quiet time, Chris pulled the Jeep over at a gas station to fill up the tank while Eve was sleeping. He decided that he wouldn't even bother waking her up since she was in such a deep sleep. She was smiling and mumbling something that Chris couldn't quite make out as Chris decided to get out of the car and pump the gas. When Chris went in to pay the bill and Eve woke up. She was dreaming about Kevin again and let out a yawn before looking at Chris' seat to see that he was missing. She stretched around in her seat as she woke up and tried to close her eyes again and go back to sleep, but she wasn't tired anymore. Eve looked around outside and saw that they were in a gas station. It was a small place with a green awning over it. There were about six pumps around the gas station with a small convenience store inside by the cash register. She saw a little, old man sitting in a chair in front of the store smoking a pipe and holding a cat adding to the station's presence making it seem more like a home than a gas station. She looked back at the small store and she noticed that Chris was up at the cash register. She saw him paying the small woman that was standing there. He seemed to be joking with the elderly woman because she was laughing at whatever it was that he had to say. Rolling her eyes, she knew that Chris couldn't go anywhere without trying to put on his typical Chris Ramsey charm. She noticed that he stopped talking to the woman and that he was coming back to the van. "Finally Sleeping Beauty woke up." Chris smiled as he got back into the van and put his seatbelt on. "How long have I been sleeping?" she asked him curiously. "Long enough to repeat Kevin's name about a thousand times." he said grinning at her. "I have not. I don't talk in my sleep." she said in disbelief. "Okay," he admitted smiling, "it was about ten thousand times." "Do I really talk in my sleep?" she asked curiously. She assumed that he was teasing her like he had always done. "Yes." he answered quickly. He looked at her with a seriousness that made her believe what he was saying. "I never knew that I did that." she said to him. "I didn't think that was one of those people." "What?" he asked slightly confused. "You know those people that talk in their sleep." she explained to him. "Oh, well I now know what turns you on and your most darkest secrets." Chris explained to her. "Shut up you liar!" she said slightly hitting him. "It's the truth." he joked. "You told me how bad you wanted to take me somewhere. You said something about ripping all of my clothes off and..." "In your dreams, not mine." she laughed at him. "Hey, it was worth a try, wasn't it?" he asked smiling. "You know that you want me." "Not in this lifetime. I'm a taken woman" Eve reminded him flashing her ring at him feeling her stomach growl. "I think that I am kind of hungry now." "I was prepared for that." Chris said pulling a package of banana nut muffins out of his jacket. "I hope that you like these." "Thank you." Eve smiled accepting the packing and digging in as he drove out of the station. "Did you get yourself something?" she asked him looking to see if he was going to eat anything. "I'm not hungry." he answered as he turned on the radio again only to discover a country music station. "That has to be a first." she laughed as she took a bite of her muffin. "In the five years I have known you, you are always eating, plotting against your latest victim in your attempts to get ahead or talking about sex. It seemed like you weren't able to survive without one of the three." "You underestimate me Lambert, but if you want I could start talking about sex since I'm not hungry or in the mood for plotting." he suggested with a grin on his face. "That's okay. I don't need to hear about it." she sighed realizing that she shouldn't have brought it up. "If that is what you want." he said smiling. "I do have some interesting stories though if you are ever in the mood to hear what life could be like on the wild side. I never told you about my date with the dancer the other night. It was a good night." "I'll pass on that one for now." she said in disgust as she clutched her stomach. "I want to enjoy my food when I am eating it." "Okay, " he sighed dramatically, "but you are missing out." "I'm sure that I am, but I think that is something that I can afford to miss." she said picking up the road map that was sitting between the two seats. "How long do you think that it will take us to get there?" "I'm sure that it will take a day and a half if you count the stops that we have to make along the way for eating and sleeping. It won't take too long. Just think. Pretty soon you will be with Kevin living in perfectly wedded bliss." he assured her with a hint of sarcasm. "I can't wait." she smiled at the thought. ***************************************************** The daylight had left sooner than either one of them expected and Chris decided that it was time to pull over for the night. He had been awake since five in the morning and decided that it was time to began looking for a place to spend the night at. Lost in the feel of exhaustion, he couldn't wait to fall into bed and sleep for a while. Stopping off at a small hotel that was at the next exit off of the highway, he noticed it appeared to be the only one in the area. It had a few stores around it and it looked like a decent place to spend the night. Chris left Eve in the car so that he could run into the manager's office to get their rooms. The manager at the front desk was an older looking balding man in his late forties that had a plump stomach. His big brown eyes were hidden by his thick bifocals. He looked like a jolly little man dressed in a navy pinstriped jacket and navy slacks. He heard Chris walk in the door and he looked up from his desk and smiled. "Hello, how may I help you sir?" he asked Chris as he set down his book that he was reading. "I need a couple or rooms for the night sir." Chris smiled looking at his watch. It was almost midnight and he was ready to crash into a warm bed. "I'm sorry sir, but I all of our rooms are booked up for the evening. This time of year is so incredibly busy for our hotel that it is rare to have any open rooms. Being that Valentine's Day is in February, we have our share of many young lovers coming here to get a night of quiet to themselves." the man smiled at Chris as he thumbed through his books. "I don't have anything open until later next week." "I guess that could be a problem." Chris thought out loud realizing that he would have to go back on the highway and hope to find another place along the way. He didn't really want to drive anymore that night, but he seemed not to have any other choice. "Thank you anyways sir." "I'm sorry that I couldn't help you." The man said as Chris turned towards the door. The manager looked down at his books again and realized that he would help Chris out. "Wait a second young man!" "Yes," Chris answered turning around again. He hoped that the man would have good news for him. "I just realized that we had a cancellation in one of our honeymoon suites. It was a last minute thing and I completely forgot about it. If you are interested, I could give you the room at the price of a regular." the man suggested smiling. "I don't know if it is what you were looking for, but it is all that I have open tonight." "That would be perfect." Chris said getting his money out of his pocket glad that he wouldn't have to drive anymore for the evening. ****************************************************** "Well, what happened?" Eve asked Chris as he got back into the Jeep. "We've got a room." Chris explained starting the Jeep and driving toward their room. "What do you mean a room?" she asked him. "I meant what I said." he answered her. "We have a room for the night." "Just one?" she asked him. "I thought that we were going to each get our own rooms." "Yes, that was what I originally planned on doing, but there was only one room left, so I said that we would take it." he explained to her. "I thought that it would beat sleeping in the Jeep. Besides, it's not like we haven't been roommates in the past. I've seen you in your pajamas before." "I guess that one room is better than nothing." she agreed as he pulled into a parking spot. "We're here." he said looking at the door to the room. "It's room number six sixteen over there." "All right, let me get a few of my things." Eve replied going to the back of the Jeep to get her bags. "I don't think that you are going to need much because we aren't going to be here that long." Chris suggested as he picked up one of his two bags. "I guess that you are right. I won't need that much." Eve decided grabbing two small suitcases and following Chris up the stairs to the room. Chris opened the door to the room as Eve walked into the darkness. The room wasn't at all what Eve had been expecting. When Chris turned the light on, she discovered that the room was a large one with a king sized heart shaped bed covered in pink satin. The carpet was so thick and soft that it squished beneath Eve's feet and in the corner of the room were heart shaped chairs and a table. The wallpaper was a heart print which added to the effect of someone that went a little too far on the Valentine's day decorating. "What kind of room did you say that this was?" she asked Chris as he put down his bags. "It's the honeymoon suite." he said taking a quick look around the room. "It's kind of unappealing to look at, but when the lights are out, it won't matter that much what it looks like in here. I just want to crawl into bed and sleep." "Well, there is only one bed in here." Eve noticed looking at the bed. "Gee, you're quick Lambert." Chris muttered moving across the room to check out what was in the mini fridge. "Which one of us gets the floor?" Eve questioned watching him pull out a can of soda. "You have got to be kidding Eve. We have driven all of this way and one of is getting reduced to the floor. That is kind of a stupid idea." he said to her as he sat down on the bed sipping on his drink. "Well, we can't very well stay in the same bed." she said seriously looking him over. "Do you think that I am going to attack you while you sleep?" Chris asked her seriously wondering why she was so bent out of shape about everything. "I wouldn't put it past you." she joked with him uneasily. "You have been dying to get your hands on me since we first met one another." "Please!! Give me a break. I am too tired to even think about something like that. Plus it is you that we are talking about. If I was going to do something, I would have done it already a long time ago. Don't you agree?" he said lightheartedly taking his shoes off before picking up his bag and standing up. "I'm going to the bathroom to get ready for bed." "Okay." Eve replied as she looked cautiously at the hideous bed. "I'll be back in a minute." Chris said as he went into the bathroom. Eve looked at the room realizing that Chris was right about how badly it was decorated. It was so cheesy that it didn't stand a chance at being a romantic room. There were some good points about it, but on the other hand there were some really bad points about it. She took a good look at the bed and realized that it was probably one of those vibrating ones that takes quarters. She looked at the room at realized that it was coming close to looking like one of those nightmares in low budget movie sets. "You have to see the soap that they have in there. You would swear that they are really going crazy with the hearts. I haven't seen a liquid soap dispenser that has a heart shape nozzle." Chris announced walking out of the bathroom in his boxer shorts and a T shirt. He looked at the center of the room where Eve was. "What is that?" "Do you like it?" Eve questioned appearing from the other side of a sheet that she hung up in the center of the bed. "It will keep our sides separate. That way the two of us can sleep in the bed and feel guilt free about it. I won't really be sleeping in the same bed with you then. Also if Kevin ever asks me about anything that went on during the trip, I can tell him about my resourcefulness. I'm sure that he would do the same thing in the same situation." "Great." Chris muttered as he put his clothes on the floor next to his side of the bed. "I'm sure that he would be proud of you." "I knew that you would like the idea." Eve smiled as she picked up one of her bags and walked towards the bathroom. "It's nothing personal." "It's just wonderful Eve. Now if I went out of my mind in the middle of the night and decided to roll over to grab you, I will have the sheet to restrain me." he said sarcastically laying on top of the bed. "That's real effective there Lambert. Tell me again, where did you get your medical license at?" "Very funny Chris." She shot back sarcastically at his comment taking a deep look at him. "I didn't realize that you'd started sleeping in your boxer shorts and a T shirt." "I usually sleep in the nude, but I figured that might offend you." he said to her as he noticed her concern. "Oh, somehow I didn't think that you did that." she said surprised by his comment. "Well, I didn't think that sharing my bedroom wardrobe was ever an issue that you were interested in hearing about when we lived together." Chris replied taking note of the surprised look on her face. "I didn't think that I would ever find the right moment to share that part of my life with you." "Good call on your part." she said walking into the bathroom. "You can just shut the lights off if you want to. I will find my way to bed when I am finished in here." "Okay." he said crawling under the covers and shutting the light off even though he couldn't quite understand what her big deal was about the two of them sleeping in the bed together. Sure, he'd thought about what it would be like to make love to her on numerous occasions and while the idea of sleeping in the same bed with her did spark a reaction in him, he wasn't ready to risk what they had by trying to push things with the two of them. He had been able to be around her for five years without laying a hand on her and he didn't think that one night in a cheap hotel would do much in changing that fact no matter how badly he did in fact want her. Closing his eyes, he decided not to think about it. "The soaps are interesting in there. I think that this is too much. I think that the management should take a survey to see what it is that honeymooner would want for a honeymooon suite." Eve said as she walked out of the bathroom and bent over to set something on the floor. >From the light shining from the bathroom Chris could see Jill wearing a red satin nightgown revealing her shapely legs. He had to admit that she did look breath taking and watched her stand before the mirror took his breath away as his heart pounded in his chest as he imagining what it would be like to hold her in his arms making sweet love to her. Chris now could see why she had reason to be worried about his reaction to seeing her. If the sheet wasn't there, he might have been tempted to forget the circumstance and reveal his heart to her succumbing to the urge to let loose and be with her. "I think that you could suggest that tomorrow before we leave if you really wanted to." Chris finally replied pretending not to be watching her every movement as she got ready for bed. He wasn't sure why he no longer had any self control, but no matter how hard he tried to fight it, he couldn't take his eyes off her. "It's not really that big of a deal I guess that it has just been a long day for the both of us." Eve sighed shutting the bathroom light off and crawling into her side of the bed. "It sure has." Chris agreed clearing his throat and smiling slightly knowing that this was probably the closest he'd ever be to Eve like this. He turned towards the sheet, facing her longing to see her, to caress her with his eyes imagining what it would be like to take her in his arms. Reaching out to touch the sheet, Chris closed his eyes imagining that it was her soft, silken skin he was holding onto. "It feels nice to be in bed." "I can't wait until we get back home to Port Charles." she said to him excitedly. "You have no idea what it feels like to know that your wedding is just around the corner and soon all your dreams are going to be coming true. Although I must confess that I'm not quite sure I'm doing the right thing. Don't get me wrong. I love Kevin, but I'm not sure if it's the kind of soul mate love that fairy tales are made of. I mean, I thought that this was the right thing, but there are so many things I'm going to miss things like this once I'm married to Kevin. Why just the other day I was thinking about everything we've been through over the years between the whole fiasco with Julie and everyone else who've stumbled in and out of our lives. You're a good friend Chris and I guess that I'm going to miss all these late night talks that we used to have. We have something special with each other Chris and I don't want to lose that once I become Mrs. Kevin Collins. Our friendship is too strong to lose any of this. Don't you agree?" Eve waited for a response from Chris for about two minutes. He must not have heard her, so she spoke to him again. "What are you thinking about over there? Anything provocative you'd like to share with me Ramsey?" she asked him jokingly. There was still no response. Eve decided to look at Chris to see what he was doing on the other side of the sheet. She expected him to be grinning at her when she looked at him, but he was sound asleep with his arms wrapped around a pillow. "How sweet! I always knew you were a softy Ramsey." she said to herself as she put the sheet back down. "Good-night Chris." She whispered rolling over on her side of the bed and drifting off to sleep shortly after dreaming of things to come over the next week. |
