As the five rangers train with the Shadow Ranger, they realize how strong he is. Later, they believe they can lay around and depend on Cruger to help them defeat Gruumm’s forces.
Later that night, Drakel, a vampire monster, searches for something he calls “the evil”. Gruumm will reward him for it, and he will be unstoppable. The rangers are alerted, and go to fight him, but he is too strong. They call for Cruger’s help, but he ignores them and Drakel escapes when the sun rises, leaving behind some small, metal object. Later, the rangers argue with Cruger for not helping them, but he simply ignores them. Cruger even tells Kat not to assist the rangers in finding out what the metal object is.
Drakel speaks with Broodwing about getting help in finding “the evil”. He pays Broodwing for a shield that will allow him to go out in the daylight. Meanwhile, the rangers interrogate Piggy in his restaurant. He tells them about that metal piece they have, which is a “class 5 containment field” for “the evil”. He tells them that “the evil” is a piece of the abyss”, which is a stone that hibernates for one hundred years that can do almost anything. It is now awake. He tells them to look at the old bookstore.
The rangers investigate the bookstore where they find Baskin, an old man who tells them that he doesn’t know about “the evil”. They leave when a giant robot attacks the city, and Drakel enters and fights Baskin, who proves to be a good fighter. During the fight, Draken obtains the evil stone from Baskin. The rangers quickly defeat the robot which is operated by a Bluehead, and they head back down to intercept Drakel. During the fight, Cruger refuses to help again. Many times, the rangers came close to losing the fight, but he is eventually put into a containment card and the stone is sent back to the rangers before he can use it. The rangers return it to Baskin.
Later, Cruger tells the rangers that he did not help them because he didn’t want them to think they could rely on Shadow Ranger to get them out of any situation. They understand, and apologize.
