Friends? - 04.01.02

Rose: Wait. We gotta take a deep breath here. Deep breath. No, no, no, no. We gotta get a few things straight first. Please, please.
Paul: All right. Fine. I'd much rather talk now anyway.
Rose: Why are you doin' that, jumping me like that, like a pelican goin' for a fish?
Paul: Because I'm trying to snap you out of this obsession with the way you look. It doesn't matter to me.
Rose: I know it doesn't. And you made that perfectly clear. And I appreciate you so much.
Paul: I loved you when you were stolen away from me, and I love you now. Your face may have changed -
Rose: "May have changed"? It has changed.
Paul: All right, that's true. It has. But I still find you as kissable as ever.
Rose: You're not making this any easier.
Paul: What needs to be made easier?
Rose: What's goin' on, what's happening to my face - this aging thing, whatever it is. I got like a million questions that I don't have any answers.
Paul: It doesn't - I understand. Okay? And - and I will help you through it in any way I can.
Rose: You wanna help me? Then be my friend.
Paul: Friend?
Rose: Yes, I'm - that's all I can really handle right now - a friend, nothing else.
Paul: I'm sorry, Rose. I just can't do that.
Paul: I am your friend, Rose. I've made that completely clear. But to expect me to be just your friend, I can't. I can't do that. And honestly, I don't see why I should.
Rose: 'Cause I've changed, I'm different.
Paul: What do you mean? What do you mean?
Rose: Not just my face. My body - me.
Paul: I don't - care.
Rose: I care. I know you don't want to hear this, baby, but people - the way we look affects how we feel. You're beautiful, you're cute. Life is your ashtray. But, when you don't have that, there's a million feelings going through your head. And you don't know who you're gonna be from one minute to the next.
Paul: So there's a period of adjustment. You know, I'm willing to live with that, no matter how long it takes.
Rose: Now, see, see, that's - you're willing to live with. I don't want to be something that you're willing to live with or something you have to deal with. I don't need a hero, Paul.
Paul: I'm not trying to be a hero.
Rose: If somebody hears about this - these people out there, they're going to be voting you the most sensitive guy on the planet.
Paul: No, that's not what's going on here. I got it.
Rose: What?
Paul: You've stopped trusting me.
Rose: This is not about trust. I know how much you missed me, how much you wanted me back, how hard you worked to get me home.
Paul: No, it is about trust. If I hadn't have - if I'd believed you when you told me about Vince O'Malley, none of this would have happened.
Rose: What are you talking about? How do you know that? You can't talk about what could'ves, what would'ves. At this point, it doesn't matter. Look. Listen. (laughs) All I'm saying is that I've been through a lot. And I need a friend. That's all I can handle right now.
Paul: So I'm on trial.
Rose: No. No.
Paul: Then what is it?
Rose: It's like - think of it as a reentry period. Like, you know, the astronauts. You know? They go into space, and then they come back, and they have to get adjusted to their lives, adjusted to the atmosphere.
Paul: It's gonna be a tough thing to live with, Rose. I mean, I - I mean, not the fact that you have to adjust, but during this time I'm gonna have to be just your friend?
Rose: If you wanna say good-bye now, then I understand.
Paul: No, no, no. I don't. No. It's just, after all this time, I've missed you, and I want to be with you.
Rose: I know, I know. And I - maybe I can explain it a little bit better. If we make love right now, there is no doubt in my mind that it will be amazing. But the way my mind is right now, I don't know if I'd see it that way. You'd be wonderful and sexy and all the great things that you are. And I'd be wondering if you were just being nice to me because you were feeling sorry for me. And I'd hear one thing, you're saying another. It just would not be good for both of us.
Paul: Friends?
Rose: Friends.
Paul: Rose -
Rose: No, don't.
Paul: Hey - friends can hug, right? Happens all the time. Friends hug.
Rose: Feels good.
Paul: Right? Yeah, feels great. Could do this all day.
(Doorbell rings.)
Rose: Did you hear that?
Paul: No.
(Doorbell rings again and Rose answers the door.)
Rose: You looking for Paul?
Barbara: Actually, I wanted to see you, Rose.
Rose: Sure. Come in.
Barbara: Paul, I didn't know that you were here. Rose, I have some news for you. News for both of you.
Rose: Ah, your kind of news? I don't know if I wanna hear it.
Barbara: Listen to me, please. We contacted Jack. He found the spa where you were being held.
Rose: Carly and Emily? Tell me he found them? He's bringing them home?
Barbara: The spa was abandoned. He didn't find them.
Rose: Nobody? There was nobody there? That's impossible! How can that be?
Barbara: Evidently, the man who ran the spa was tipped off that Jack was arriving. That's all I know.
Rose: Think he - he would do that. He would kill Carly and Emily because he doesn't care about people's lives, that guy.
Paul: Don't do this to yourself, okay? I mean, for all we know, Dr. Weston left and didn't deal with the patients at all. Okay? He saves himself, and they're on their own.
Rose: That's really a wonderful dream, but that guy would not leave a loose end. He's - they're gone. They're gone. I just know it!
Barbara: Not necessarily. I think maybe Paul has a point here.
Rose: If you're messing with me, Barbara, I swear -
Barbara: No, listen to me. Please listen to me. Like Paul said, maybe they had to get out of there really fast. Now, if Carly and Emily were dead, wouldn't they have been left behind?
Barbara: Listen to the facts, all right? If the spa was empty, doesn't it make more sense that they're still alive?
Rose: You're only saying that to ease your stinkin' conscience.
Barbara: No, I'm just trying to explain what I believe -
Paul: All right, you've delivered your message. You can leave at any time, mom.
Rose: You ever have those nightmares that when you wake up you hope that things are gonna be better but they're only worse?
Paul: Yeah.
Rose: That's this nightmare here right now. I feel like it's getting worse and -
Paul: It is a nightmare, but you're not going through this alone.
(Rose begins sobbing.)
Paul: It's okay. It's okay.
Rose: No. Rose D'Angelo, do not fall apart, I'm telling you.
Paul: I know you don't. You're the bravest person I've ever met.
Barbara: I'm sorry. I shouldn't have come.
Rose: No. It's good that you came here. You had news to tell us, and I'm glad you told us.
Barbara: I'm sure you despise me, Rose. And I don't blame you. But I just want you to know, if there's anything you need, I'd like to help you.
Rose: You wanna help me? How are you gonna help me?
Barbara: Money, medical care, errands - whatever you want. If you need something, just give me a chance.
Barbara: I know I've hurt you both. But I promise you, I will do whatever I can to make it up to you.
Rose: It's too late to switch sides, Barbara.
Barbara: I - I'm sorry. Paul -
Paul: Go home.
Rose: As a friend, you're not half bad.
Paul: I will be whatever you need me to be - always.

Marry me - 04.12.02

Rose: Ah, Ms. Walsh says hello.
Paul (grabs phone from Rose): Hey, she'll call you back.
Rose: You just hung up on Ms. Walsh. You gotta teach me how to do that.
Paul: And you got to teach me how to land a plane while I'm unconscious.
Rose: I was not unconscious. And Craig landed the plane. And how did you know?
Paul: Margo.
Rose: Are you mad?
Paul: Do not go anywhere near my father again, you hear me? You could have died. James called Jack last night, offered to make a deal - trade Emily and Carly for my mother.
Rose: Ah, well, you told him what you thought of that plan.
Paul: Yeah, I approved it. She got herself into this mess, she can get herself out. I'm through running interference for her. My future is with you.
Rose: What're you doing?
Rose: Paul, hold the phone here. You’re telling me that you're okay with Barbara being traded for Carly and Emily?
Paul: Jack would never allow for an actual trade. He'll just use her as bait. Besides, it's about time she took some responsibility.
Rose: Wow. Wow. Where did this come from?
Paul: I've done all I can, and then some. I have my own life to manage, and people I care about.
Rose: Look, I don't want you to think you have to choose.
Paul: I'm choosing me. I have to. I got so caught up in my mother's problems.
Rose: She's your mother! Of course!
Paul: Yeah, and she was hurt, and me running interference for her was the right thing to do at the time. But I got caught up. it became a bad habit. She's on her own.
Rose: No more package deal?
Paul: Just me.
Rose: Hmm. well. I don't know about this. I mean, Barbara was the one thing that made you mortal, you bein' so gorgeous and smart and perfect and all.
Paul: I'm not perfect. You know that. I'm just hoping you'll look past my flaws and see someone who's humbly asking you to forgive him.
Rose: For what?
Paul: For not letting you know how important you are to me. You're what it's all about, Rose.
Rose: Paul, we've talked about this. We were - we're gonna be friends.
Paul: And that was a mistake.
Rose: What?
Paul: My mistake. I was so happy to have you back that I didn't realize how you felt. You told me, but I didn't listen. And that's why it went wrong.
Rose: No, this is not your fault!
Paul: Yes, it is! I was so set on what I wanted, on convincing you that it didn't matter what you looked like, that I still felt the same way, that I pushed you. And it drove you further away and made me push harder.
Rose: It's okay -
Paul: No, it's not! You were right. We can't go back to the way things were.
Rose: I wanna go back. I wanna go back to my life before this, Paul. When all I could think about was you and me and room service.
Paul: You're not that same person anymore, Rose. And neither am I. We're not the jolly little couple going on dates anymore. If we're gonna do this, we're gonna have to do this together. We're gonna have to up and make a commitment and face this thing together. I just need to know if you're willing.
Rose: I don't understand.
Paul: Marry me. Marry me. Let’s try this thing - this family thing, the love thing, everything in the world. I wanna fight it with you, Rose. And I wanna have some kids. I wanna have- lots and lots of little Pauls and Roses running around so I can tell them one day about the day that I met their mother in an airport. She walked up to me and saved my life.
Paul: Shh. No. let me see if I can read your mind. you're thinking - among other things - that right now is the worst time to get married. That finding Emily and Carly and finding out what's wrong with you is the most important thing.
Rose: Yeah, but -
Paul: But consider for a minute - not another word out of you - that maybe I want the thing, that finding Emily and Carly is important to me and I want you to recover. I want answers. Is that too impossible to imagine?
Rose: No -
Paul: Oh, shh. So - why don't we find these answers together? We can't go back in time, Rose. We can't pretend like we're not connected. If you pull us apart, all you're gonna have are two lonely, miserable people. Right?
Rose: Yeah.
Paul: Do you love me?
Rose: You know I do.
Paul: Okay, all right. So life is short. Let's make the most of it - together. Marry me.
Rose: Uh, can i - say something? Good. 'Cause a lot of things that you said make total sense. You know, not that i don't disagree with - like the fact that we make a lot of assumptions. And that we both want the same things. And that we love each other. And I don't want you to think for one second that my old - this talk I had about cutting you loose had anything to do with the way that I feel about you. Because I do love you.
Paul: I know you do. And I love -
Rose: But you're comin' in here and turnin' my life upside-down. I'm just not ready for it. I mean, my knees, right? I'm not trusting the knees. And when a dancer's knees go south, you're just - you're in serious trouble.
Paul: All right, then let it go. Okay, just take a deep breath and let go. Because I promise you, I am going to make you the happiest -
Rose: No, you can't promise me. You can't promise me a happy ending or a cure for what's going on here or finding Carly and Emily. All you can say is what you're saying. And you're saying is that you want me. And the truth of the matter is i'm dyin' for you too. What's happened to me? I mean, it's not that I like it. It's awful. But I wanna put my arms around you. And if I put my arms around you, everything else in my life will be fine, and I’ll be happy and - what am I saying?
Paul: That I'm right. Admit it, D'Angelo. I'm right, and you are wrong.
Rose: That's no fair, makin' me laugh.
Paul: Yeah, I make you laugh. I make you think. And I wanna tell the whole world how great you make me feel. Because I love you. I'm not giving you up.
Rose: Okay.
Paul: Okay what?
Rose: You win.
Paul: You'll marry me?
Rose: Yeah. Well, I mean, what choice do i have? You'll -
(Paul kisses Rose before she can finish her sentence.)

The Ring(s) - 04.17.02

Paul: So where's the engaged couple station in this place?
Rose: Mm, somewhere private, like under the table maybe?
Paul: What're you afraid of?
Rose: I'm afraid of you takin' this face for a walk.
Paul: Oh, come here. Sit here. Sit here. Sweetheart, I love your face. Sit down.
Rose: You, my friend, may have a little bit of a problem. It's just no piece of cake, you know? Running into people who knew me then, like that pizza guy who thought I was your mother, lookin' at me like, "What happened to you?"
Paul: Yeah, and then they get over it, because they're so happy to see you.
Rose: St. Paul. That's what I'm gonna call you. St. Paul, patron saint of the vain and vainer.
Paul: It's not vanity. It's more serious than that, but it doesn't disqualify you from living your life. And which reminds me, you have some work to do.
Rose: Oh, no. No more working. Right now I'm just gonna be a drain on society.
Paul: Okay. Well, first you have to make a choice. They were all so great, I couldn't choose, so -
Rose: As long as it's not a mirror, I'll be all right. What did you do?
Paul: For an engaged woman, your ring finger was a little empty, so I - I went shopping.
Paul: Oh, no. No, don't touch. Not yet.
Rose: Oh!
Paul: Here we go.
Rose: Look at that. A little display. Just like on TV. Like that home shopping network thingie.
Paul: Yeah, like I could possibly pick a ring for the shopping queen of Hoboken, New Jersey.
Rose: Oh, at least it'd have taste.
Paul: Well, taste is not the point. We wanna knock their socks off.
Rose: Now you're talkin' my language. Show me the shiny stuff, preppie.
Paul: All right. But first, remember - this is a very important moment, a very important decision. So take your time, okay?
Rose: No pressure.
Paul: Just so we're clear.
Rose: I feel like I'm in a show I never rehearsed for.
Paul: Butterflies are good. This is a very important moment, after all. (pulls out a ring and places it on the table) Decoder ring, circa 1954. This is, of course, a copy. But it has all the standard features.
Rose: A decoder ring?
Paul: You have no idea how difficult it was to find this particular model.
Rose: Oh, really? Go through a lot of cereal?
Paul: Some very happy squirrels in my neighborhood. Okay. Item number two - Rose: Mm-hmm.
Paul: Mood ring.
Rose: Oh, of course.
Paul: Vintage item, late '60s, early '70s.
Rose: You are too much over there.
Paul: You wanna try it on?
Rose: Well, no. Don't need a mood ring to tell me how I feel. You're just -
Paul: No, hey, hey, hey. No, no. Keep your lips over there. No kissing. Item number three - (Rose gasps) the disco dazzler.
Rose: Oh, yes.
Paul: Battery operated.
Rose: I know! I loved that thing when I was in high school. Oh, my God I had that - my girlfriends and I, we had one, you know? And we'd signal each other across the gym, you know.
Rose: I want them all!
Paul: You have to choose.
Rose: Well, I can't choose.
Paul: Well, you ha - okay. You know what, if that's how you feel, I think I might have one more.
Rose: Oh!
Paul: Here. Just see -
(Paul pulls out a small paper bag from his coat pocket.)
Rose: Is it - is it a mesmo ring? My friend Nicole had one of those in high school. Yep, remember those? Lie rings would go round and round and - (Rose gasps)
Paul: Breathe.
Rose: I - I can't.
Paul: When you look down at this ring, I don't want you to think, "Did I make a mistake? Should I have picked the disco dazzler?"
Rose: You mean I can't have the disco dazzler, too?
Paul: You can have anything you want. But - but first, you gotta - please sit down. All right. Here goes. The whole nine yards.
Paul: If ever a man knew what he wanted, I am that man. Rose, you make me happy.
Rose: I think you're makin' this whole restaurant happy.
Paul: Good. Let 'em smile.
Rose: I don't want word to get back to Lily before I had a chance to tell her. And Abigail's right over there.
Paul: Well, there's not gonna be anything to tell them if you don't let me finish.
Rose: You can finish. I'll let you finish. Just a second.
Paul: Wha -
Rose: Hi, Abigail.
Abigail: Aunt Rose, hi. This is Aaron. This is Holden's son.
Rose: Oh! Look at you. You look just like your father. Oh, so nice to meet you!
Aaron: Nice ring.
Rose: Thank you. It's pretty great, isn't it?
Abigail: We don't mean to intrude.
Rose: No! Don't mind Paul. He gets a little carried away in public places, in restaurants.
Abigail: I think it's great.
Rose: Thank you. So do I. But I'd really like to be the first person to tell Lily about it, so -
Abigail: Oh, yeah. My lips are sealed.
Aaron: Hey, me, you'll have to pay.
Rose: Look out for this one. Sharp as a tack. He reminds me of me when I was a kid.
Abigail: He's all right. He's got a great motorcycle, though.
Rose: Does he? Hmm. You'll have to give me a ride sometime.
Aaron: Anytime.
Rose: Thanks.
Aaron: We should get going. Abigail's got a lot of stuff to do.
Rose: That's right! Today is the trial, the big day, right?
Abigail: Yeah. I testify today.
Rose: Oh, you knock 'em dead, all right? And you wear a helmet.
Aaron: We got it covered.
Rose: Okay.
Abigail: Congratulations. (hugs Rose)
Rose: Oh, thank you so much. Oh, just - I'll be thinking about you, and I'll check in later, okay? Okay. Helmets! Helmets, all around. Okay!
(Paul is relaxing in the chair when Rose comes back.)
Rose: Our secret is safe!
Paul: What secret?
Rose: Assume the position, boyfriend. Your status is about to change.
Paul: Oh.(Paul gets back down on one knee)
Rose: I make you happy - ?
Paul: Oh. The happy stu - yeah. Um - Rose, will you do me the great honor of becoming my wife?
Rose: Mrs. Paul Ryan.
Paul: We'll pick out the stationery tomorrow.
Rose: Oh. You know that I want this more than anything.
Paul: All right, well, so give my knee a break and say yes.
Rose: Can you just tell your knee to take a break for one second because this is a special moment that only happens once in a lifetime, and I wanna savor it. You and me have - we've been through hell and back. And you're right. Let's grab life by the throat. We deserve to be happy. And you're terrific. And I love you. And - yes! Yes, yes, I'll be Mrs. Paul Ryan.
Paul: Thank you, Rose D'Angelo.
Rose: No. No, you just call me Mrs. Ryan.
(Rose jumps into Paul’s arms and kisses him.)
Paul: I'll call you - all right, my leg - okay. Mm. Okay. (applause)
