Welcome back, Rose - 01.17.03/01.20.03

Paul: This has to be the first time in your life you've ever been early.
Rose: Hello, stranger.
Paul: Hey. You know, we met right here in this very airport.
Rose: And you hugged me before you even knew my name.
Paul: I asked you for money, too.
Rose: Yeah. You need a couple of bucks? 'Cause I could - I could really use a hug.
Paul: Ah. Well, you look incredible.
Rose: Oh! You're a sight for sore eyes yourself there, my friend. I took an earlier flight. How did you know that I was gonna be here?
Paul: I wasn't gonna come at all.
Rose: Oh, no?
Paul: But I had to see you.
Rose: I know you didn't forget what I look like.
Paul: You're more beautiful than ever. Which makes what I have to say all the more difficult, Rose. I -
Rose: You sound like it's the end of the world.
Paul: I - I've been thinking.
Rose: Oh, no, you've got questions. And do you wanna know - why I stayed away so long, why I kept out of touch and what I'm doing back here?
Paul: And - why you're still wearing my ring?
Rose: Well, because you put it there. And you said you'd always be mine. I hope that's still true.
Rose: This is a lousy place to have this conversation. I want to go home.
Paul: You know what? I think we've waited long enough, don't you? I mean, I was forced to wait for four months while you were off doing whatever you were doing.
(talking over each other)
Rose: And boom, boom, boom, it's over? I mean, I love you.
Paul: So where were you the past few months?
Rose: Trying to figure out the last couple of years. One day, I'm kicking up my heels in Atlantic City. The next thing I know, I'm not the daughter of an Italian American couple. I'm adopted. I've got an identical twin. I've got a diamond worth a fortune. And after a zillion other insane moments, my pop almost ends up getting killed in a foreign country. And it was like I'm a speeding train, and I couldn't stop. It didn't have brakes, you know? And I couldn't breathe. So when my pop got better, we went to Italy, and we got off the train.
Paul: And forgot about the fiance you left waiting -
Rose: I did not stop thinking about you for one second, not one day that I was gone. That's not cutting it, you know, obviously, but it's true.
Paul: So what now?
Rose: I've got a list of a million things. I've got to see Ms. Walsh.
Paul: Ms. Walsh? I was talking about us! What's next for us?! I mean, in your journey of self-discovery, did you not even remember who the hell I am? I'm the guy who asked you to be his wife 'cause I don't want to spend the rest of my life without you in it. So you tell me, Rose. You tell me, what am I supposed to do? Am I supposed to stand here and listen to you say, "Oh, I thought about you every single day," but you never, ever, ever wrote me a letter to tell me so! From where I stand, that doesn't make me a guy whose - whose ring you want to wear. It makes me a nonentity. So whatever place I had in your heart wasn't nearly as important as the place you had in mine.
Rose: And where was that place when you went on trial for murder? Yes, yes. I knew about that. I even booked the next flight. But did you call? No. So I started asking myself, "Did he ever need me? Did he ever love me at all?"
Paul: You know - I never stopped loving you.
Rose: Then why?
Paul: Because I wanted you to come back when you needed me, not because I needed you.
Rose: What difference does it make?! You need me, I need you! It doesn't matter! We love each other! Or - at least we used to. I mean, is that why you left me hanging there before when I said that I loved you? Because you figured out you don't need me anymore?
Paul: I still love you, Rose. I never stopped.
Rose: Then why are we so sad?
Rose: You know, in my fantasy, when we saw each other, it'd be a lot more fun than this.
Paul: Yeah?
Rose: Yeah, I'd think about us seeing each other after all this time. And go back to your place, tear off all our clothes, have sex like a million times. And then we would - talk.
Paul: I used to have that same fantasy, too.
Rose: Used to?
Paul: You disappeared from my life, Rose.
Rose: Yeah, 'cause you went through hell, and it wasn't my hand that you wanted to hold. I mean, you had everybody lying for you, about how great you were doing. And you know what? Don't start pointing fingers at me, 'cause you never called.
Paul: You know what? Marriage is about two people who want to share each other's lives for the rest of their lives, not take some four-month hiatus where you can just freeze everything and then automatically pick up exactly where you left off.
Rose: You know what? You're right. You're absolutely right. So you know what? That just leaves us with one question - what do we do with this?
Rose: You know, I've got friends back in Atlantic City that think a girl gets to keep this no matter what happens. But, for me, you know, that just wouldn't seem right.
Paul: Rose, I didn't - I didn't come back here to get the ring.
Rose: Well, that's good, because I didn't fly all the way out here just to give it back to you. See that? We're agreeing on things already.
Paul: We also agree that we haven't been sharing each other's lives for the past several months.
Rose: This is true. Which makes you wonder what are we doing engaged, you know?
Paul: I hope it's 'cause we still love each other.
Rose: There's no "hope" about it. We do. I mean - I do - with all my heart.
Paul: Well, then - may I?
Rose: You know, I don't know about you, but I'm gonna need a clear head if we're going to start thinking about what we're gonna do here.
Paul: Yeah. Me, too.
Rose: And if I - I gotta keep my head on straight. If I get a taste of those lips, thinking is the last thing that I'm gonna want to do.
Paul: Okay. So, we - hands off until -
Rose: Whenever!
Paul: Okay, whenever.
Lily: Rose? Rose!
Rose: Hey, Lily! Oh, wow, Luciano! Look at you! Oh, gosh, you look so great. Look at you. Look at you. Oh, I missed you so much.
Rose: Wow, Luke, you look great! And you, what is your name again?
Faith: Faith.
Rose: Of course. How could I forget that? Look at you. Oh, you look so cute. I could never forget you - ever, ever. Look at you.
Lucinda: Okay, I'm next. Nice child. You know, sweetheart, welcome back. Until I saw your face again, I didn't realize how much I'd missed you.
Rose: Oh, thank you. Oh, you - hey, there, handsome.
Holden: How you doing? Welcome home.
Rose: Oh, thank you.
Lily: Rose, this is your new niece. Natalie.
Rose: Just as I thought, just as gorgeous as the others. And look how - you look great. Oh, I missed you so much! Can I hold her?
Lily: Sure.
Rose: Oh, yeah. Yeah. Now, listen, don't get confused. I know I look a lot like your mom, but your mom's the one with the perfect hair. I look like my hair was put in a blender.
Holden: All right, everybody - what do you say we get Aunt Rose home so we can dig in to grandma's cake?
Rose: You baked cake?
Lucinda: Oh, honey, you've been away too long. I had it sent over.
Rose: Fine, that works for me. Well, let's go.
Lucinda: All right. Oh, dear - tell me about our Joe. Is he gonna recover?
Rose: He's as healthy as a horse. In the old country, hangin' out with his family. Oh, he's havin' a great time.
Lucinda: You don't say.
Rose: Yeah.
Lucinda: You need help?
Rose: No, I'm good. Come on.
Lucinda: All right.
Lily: All right, everybody, stay together. I don't want anybody getting lost in the airport. Let's go. Let's go, let's go, let's go.
Rose: Hey, hey, hey, hey. Hey.
Paul: Hey.
Rose: That means you, too, preppie.
Paul: No, you - you go spend some time with your family. It's fine.
Rose: And what are you? Carry-on luggage? Huh?
Paul: All right. Let's go. I'll go.
Rose: Okay. And don't try to sneak out early.
Paul: All right.
Rose: I'm home.

Switzerland - 01.20.03

Rose: I left and there's no Natalie, I'm back for ten minutes and I cannot imagine the family without her.
Holden: We pretty much feel the same way.
Rose: So how's she doing with the sleeping?
Lily: She is a great baby.
Rose: So you two gonna have more or are you closin' up shop there?
Holden: We're done -
Lily: We haven't decided. Well, we don't want to get too far ahead of you.
Rose: Me? Well, don't put the babies before the cart.
Luke: Wow, look at this. Thanks, Aunt Rose.
Rose: I'm glad you like it. So you want to take it for a test drive?
Luke: Can I, mom?
Lily: Sure. Of course.
Holden: Come on, buddy. I'll go out with you. Let's go.
Lucinda: Well, Rose, when are you gonna get your body over to Worldwide? I've - (clears throat) Redecorated the executive dining room.
Rose: Oh, I liked it the way it was.
Lucinda: Well, you're going to like this way much better, because it's Italian. It's Milanese. But anyway, consider it done in your honor.
Rose: Oh, I wish you hadn't done that.
Lucinda: Oh, really, you'll like it. You're a vice president, you know, and I want you to be happy.
Rose: You know, being in Italy was so great. I got to see all the relatives, saw all the sights. But that gave me time to think about - things. And I've come to a decision about my career.
Lucinda: What's that?
Rose: Well, Ms. Walsh, I've decided to do something different.
Lucinda: That's wonderful, darling. Diversify. That makes you a much more valuable player in the long run.
Rose: That is not the kind of "different" that I was talking about. I'm talking about doing something else.
Lucinda: Like what?
Rose: Hair.
Lucinda: Hair? Okay. But at Worldwide, I can't help you there, darling, 'cause we don't have a cosmetic division.
Rose: See, that's what I'm good at. You know? And I really like it, you know? Colors, perms, blowouts.
Lucinda: Oh, you mean hair? That's what they do in salons.
Rose: Yes. I'm gonna open one of those.
Paul: I can't believe it. You've rendered Lucinda speechless.
Lily: Me, too.
Rose: That's it? No one's gonna wish me luck?
Luke: Aunt Rose, you've got to see this.
Lily: Oh, not right now, okay?
Rose: No, that's all right. We can talk about this later.
Lucinda (to Lily): A beauty parlor? Has she gone completely mad?

Rose: Well, look who got bossy while I was away. Look at you.
Lily: I'll be in the kitchen.
(Lily pushes Rose into the living room while she heads to the kitchen.)
Rose: You should see Luciano driving that thing out there. He's like - it's great. Gonna want his license by the time he's 12.
Paul: So - tell me about this beauty parlor idea.
Rose: Are you interested?
Paul: Absolutely.
Rose: Well, back in Atlantic City, I used to do a lot of hair and makeup. You know, we had this girl on staff, but all the girls liked comin' to me, instead. I'm really good at it. You know? So I figured I'd open up one of my own.
Paul: Makes perfect sense.
Rose: It does?
Paul: Yeah. And I'm behind whatever makes you happy. So you just let me know what I can do to help.
Rose: I'll do that. Hey, we did it.
Paul: What?
Rose: We got over our first hump.
Paul: Yeah. Yeah, I guess you're right.
Rose: Yeah, feels pretty good. Right?
Paul: Good. Reasonably. Reasonably good.
Rose: But not good enough?
Paul: No.
Rose: You know - when you put this ring on my finger and you asked me to marry you, I thought to myself, "You put this ring on, and that's who you are." So when I was away, I never took it off. Because I made a promise. And I was gonna follow through on that promise. But now that we're just tryin' to figure things out -
Paul: Say it.
Rose: We're nothing if we're not honest, the two of us. And right now, wearing this ring, it just doesn't feel honest.
Paul: I agree.
(Rose takes her ring off and gives it to Paul.)
Rose: Don't get rid of it, okay? And don't sell it.
Paul: I won't. I won't. Just wish it didn't feel so final for me to take it back.
Rose: Oh - it's not supposed to feel like that. I mean, not by a long shot.
Paul: I don't want it to feel that way, either.
Rose: So what do we do?
Paul: We give the ring to Switzerland.
Paul: Hey, Lily? Can you come in here for a minute?
Rose: Paul, what is going on? What're you doing?
Paul: You will see. Be patient.
Rose: I better see 'cause, you know, I am not patient. You know that.
Lily: Everything okay?
Rose: I don't know. Ask Paul.
Paul: We need a favor.
Lily: What is it?
Paul: Well, Rose and I have decided to slow things down for awhile. And rather than take back my engagement ring back, we would like for somebody to hold it for us.
Lily: Who did you have in mind?
Paul: Well, you know how Switzerland always stays neutral, no matter what's going on in the world? Well, we'd like for you to be our Switzerland.
Rose: Oh, yes. But can she yodel? (Rose laughs.) Did I ever tell you how smart you are? So what do you think, Lily? I think that's a great idea.
Lily: Well, yes, of course, if that's what you want. But if it's not what you want -
Rose: You know what? No, we don't want your advice. You hold the ring, you hold the comments, okay?
Lily: I get the message, Rose. It'll be safe with me.

You can't drown her - 01.29.03

Rose: Hi. You're not gonna leave without me? Are you, preppie? This seat taken?
Paul: I was saving it for a gorgeous brunette.
Rose: Oh, well, thank you. I'm glad you called.
Paul: I'm glad you decided to stop by.
Rose: Oh, well, it takes a long time to get this gorgeous.
Paul: You'd be gorgeous dripping wet.
Barbara: Rose D'Angelo? Is that you? I had no idea that you were back in town. Oh, Paul, you must be so excited about this. Finally, you have some sunshine back in your life. Congratulations, darling.
Barbara: Well, wherever you have been, it has done you a world of good.
Rose: Are you drunk?
Barbara: No, of course not.
Paul: Okay, mom, this is a private party. So if you don't mind -
Barbara: Honey, I was just trying to be polite. I'm surprised to see Rose. That's all. I had no idea that you were back in town. In fact, you've been gone for so long, I just wasn't quite sure how I would react when I saw you.
Rose: You don't know how to react? Get out of my sight!
Barbara: There's no reason to be quite so impolite.
Rose: You know, try bein' buried alive.
Paul: All right, all right, all right, this conversation is over.
Barbara: I'm sorry. I didn't mean to intrude. I'll call you later.
Rose: What the hell was that?
Paul: Well, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't drown her.
Rose: Oh, no?
Paul: No.
Rose: Why not?
Paul: Rose, I - I wish I had different parents, but I don't. Which is exactly why I've severed every tie with them, legal and otherwise. But my brother's a different story. He's still a minor. He needs a mother.
Rose: Can't you see what she is doing?
Paul: Babe, he is in a psych ward at memorial, court-ordered because they think he set fire to Emma's barn. He was injured in a fire, in a coma for weeks, and now the psychiatrist is saying that he - he feels responsible for my mother's state of mind.
Rose: Of course he does. That's what she wants.
Paul: And you know what? You're right. You are absolutely right. And I'm not abandoning my brother. I can't. And if that means I have to get my mother out of a tree from time to time, then that's what I will do.
Rose: Okay, so both of your lives revolve around that broad's state of mind.
Paul: That's a bit of an overstatement.
Rose: Is it really? I mean, we can't even have a drink without her swoopin' in.
Paul: Hey, what do you - what do you want me to do? I can't make her stop butting in. She just - I can make her leave, and I just did that.
Rose: A lot of good that did. Here we are. We're still talking about her.
Paul: So - how was your day?
Rose: Peachy. Yours?
Paul: I'll call you, Rose.
Rose: Where are you going?
Paul: No, I have a responsibility to my brother. You have to decide whether or not you can handle that.

Take two - 01.29.03

Paul: Vodka, neat.
Rose: You know what? I've been doin' some thinkin'. And you and I - we have a very - a heck of a past.
Paul: Yes, we do.
Rose: But I'm more concerned about the future.
Paul: I'd settle for the present.
Rose: Sure. Okay, right here, right now. Right. Okay, preppie. Take two. That's what they say in movies when they wanna start over, right? "Take two." Take two. You don't know me. You don't know anything about me. Okay? We're gonna go way back. You don't - don't you smile at me. All you know is I'm the most beautiful brunette you've ever seen sit at a bar. There you go. Go.

Tattooed on my heart - 01.31.03/02.03.03

Paul: I didn't order that.
Bartender: Take it up with your girlfriend.
Rose: Hey! You weren't supposed to tell him that! I'm trying to be mysterious.
Bartender: I told her to lose the umbrella.
Paul: No, it's all right. It's festive. Hey.
Rose: Hi. So, if you don't like umbrellas, what do you like, stranger?
Paul: I'm lookin' at her.
Rose: So - what is your favorite football team?
Paul: You know my favorite football team.
Rose: Yeah.
Paul: You know my favorite pasta.
Rose: Yes.
Paul: You know my favorite indoor sport.
Rose: Mm-hmm.
Paul: All these things you know about me, Rose.
Rose: Mm. I just thought we were trying to get to know each other here, that's all.
Paul: No, no, no. The idea is for us to spend time together. You know, I think we're both a little shy. We're a little - a little uncertain. It's been a while. A lot of things have happened. And I don't think pretending like we don't know each other - listen. We love each other. We just need to spend the time, okay?
Rose: Can I ask you a question?
Paul: A serious question?
Rose: Define "serious."
Paul: Okay, something that doesn't have anything to do with conga lines or drinking tequila out of some stripper's navel.
Rose: No, I'm talking about a bottom-line, for-real question.
Paul: Okay.
Rose: If you don't want jokes, how could you want me?
Paul: Wait a minute. I never said I don't want to laugh again. I just - I just want to know how long we are going to dance around the issue.
Rose: Which issue?
Paul: Our last six months. You know, you being in Italy, me facing a life sentence, us being engaged through the whole thing, making do with a couple of phone calls. These are things that need to be addressed. That sound about right?
Rose: Yeah.
Paul: And we can't do that by tossing around a few jokes and pretending like everything's fine, like everything's normal. We just need to figure out why things happened the way they did.
Rose: Then what?
Paul: Maybe you and I can find a place to connect again.
Rose: I thought that's what we were doing right here right now.
Paul: Okay. A place a little - a little deeper than laughing about tiny umbrellas in big drinks. Am I right?
Rose: In a way. In another way, it sounds like you're giving me the boot.
Paul: You think I'm dumping you?
Rose: Yeah. Maybe. I can read between the lines. I have a gift -
Paul: Sweetheart, why would I be here if I were dumping you?
Rose: 'Cause you're a mensch. You want to let me down easy.
Paul: Okay, all right, I'm lost, because I'm - I'm over here trying to tell you how much I want to get closer to you, and you think that I want to break up? You sure you're not the one trying to let me down easy?
Rose: Do you know how incredible Italian men are? Hmm?
Paul: I think I've heard.
Rose: Oh, yeah, they are. They're - they smile at you, pull out your chair for you, make you feel like a million bucks even though they don't know you.
Paul: I didn't realize that was -
Rose: And I managed to go to bed alone every night for six months and lay there in my pensione and wake up the next morning and only one guy on my mind.
Paul: Who was that?
Rose: You. You're tattooed on my heart.
Paul: I was thinking about you, too, babe.
Rose: You were in jail. What do you mean, thinking about me? I'm sorry. No jokes.
Paul: There's no one else for me, no one but you.
Rose: Then what is the verdict here?
Paul: Well, sweetheart, we are either meant for each other or we are damn crazy.
Rose: I know we're crazy. It's the other part that's got my head spinnin' here.
Paul: You're not sure you belong with me?
Rose: I'm not sure the real Rose belongs with anybody.
Paul: You seem like the same Rose to me.
Rose: Oh, yeah? Yeah? The boardroom Rose or the showroom Rose?
Paul: Is there a difference?
Rose: Yeah, yeah, the Rose that came from jersey, shakin' her tail feathers for a living, I enjoyed that very much, by the way.
Paul: Oh, come on. I saw you over at worldwide, too. You loved wheelin' and dealin' over there, too.
Rose: That was showbiz, honey. That was dressed up, like the exec, playin' the part, yeah. I loved that. But my own salon, hair, makeup, it's gonna be the real me, 100%.
Paul: All right, well, I can handle your career change.
Rose: Hello, I'm talking about a complete makeover here. I can't expect you to sit by while that happens to me.
Paul: Why? Why not? Besides, it might speed things up if I - if I'm with you. You know I have a pretty good mind for business.
Rose: Yeah, big business. Talkin' about rentin' a storefront, used to be known as Yuppy Puppy. Little.
Paul: Yuppy Puppy?
Rose: Yeah.
Paul: All right, let's go take a look at it. Come on.
Rose: Are you serious?
Paul: Yeah, I'm absolutely sure. I can - I can judge a good piece of real estate. Let's go.
Rose: This might be a big mistake.
Paul: Well, it wouldn't be our first, now, would it? Let's go.
