Talk tomorrow - 05.01.03

Rose: I've got some thinking to do, and I can't do it while you're here.  Please - come on.  Come on.
Dusty: I never meant to hurt you.  That was never a part of the plan.  And I never meant to fall in love with you.
(Paul walks in on Rose and Dusty.)
Paul: Hey, Ro - hey, what the hell's going on here?  Rose, are you all right?  Hey, what the hell have you done to her?!
Paul: Rose, I am so sorry you found out this way.  I wanted to be the one to tell you.
Rose: It's okay.  I'm okay.  I'm okay.
Paul: Did you explain away your deal with my mother?  Is that why you ran over here?
Dusty: There's no deal, Paul.
Paul: Did you tell Rose how you lied to the police?  How you lied to me?  Tell me something, Dusty.  Why would a hotshot investment banker like yourself need to borrow money from my mother?  Answer me, dammit! Rose, deserves the truth!
Dusty: I told her the truth.
Paul: How long before the two of you were going to pull the rug out from under Rose?  Huh?  What was the payoff?  Ruining her?  Ruining us?!
Dusty: I would never hurt her.
Paul: You've got that right.
Rose: That's it!  Now stop!  Just stop it!  Both of you, stop!  I can't take it anymore!  Neither one of you!  Just go.  I need you to leave now, please. Please.
Paul: Rose - you need to hear the tape.  Okay?  You need to know the truth about this man who's supposed to be your partner.
Rose: Talk about this tomorrow.
Paul: No.
Rose: Please, another time?
Paul: You should not be alone right now, okay?  How about I just stay here?  And we won't have to talk about it, all right?
Rose: You're gonna want to talk, and I don't want to talk.  Because I'm gonna need some time by myself to clear my head.  Please, just - we'll do it tomorrow, all right?  Please?  Please?
Paul: All right.  I'll call you tomorrow.
Rose: Okay.

Choose me unconditionally - 05.06.03

Paul: Rose! Rose, open up! We need to talk right now!
Rose: Hi. Come on in.
Mitzi: Hi ya, Paul.
Paul: Hi, Mitzi. You mind if we can get some privacy here?
Mitzi: You bet. Hey, you kids have fun.
Rose: You look mad. And I know why. I mean, I had to kick you out of here last night like that.
Paul: I'm sure you were pretty tired after getting Dusty's spin on everything.
Rose: I kicked him out, too. You saw it. I got him out first.
Paul: Yeah. You threw us both out. Except the thing is, I’m your fiancé. I thought I might get some special consideration.
Rose: It was a rough night, all right? Finding out my business partner was doing business with Barbara? Even though it was only a short-term thing, but still -
Paul: Short-term? Rose, they've been in business together from the beginning!
Rose: What? No. Barbara's money went into the account first. It had nothing to do with our business.
Paul: Wait, wait. You're still planning on doing business with this guy after everything you just found out?
Rose: Yeah. Why not?
Paul: You refused money from Lily, from Lucinda, from me - and yet, you're still gonna do business with a man who took money from a woman you despise? Who despises you? What are you thinking, Rose?
Rose: I don't know! I don't know, okay? But whatever decision I make, it's gonna be from me! Not from you, not from Lucinda, not from Lily, not from Dusty. It's gonna be me.
Paul: I try to keep you from getting hurt, and you think I’m trying to take over your life. I love you, Rose. What is it going to take for you to believe that?
Rose: Maybe I want to feel that no matter what happens, you'll always choose me. Without me having to ask you to do it.
Paul: Look at that ring on your finger and say that again. Okay. I do feel a certain responsibility to my mother. But I have always chosen you. I have always defended you. Every single time!
Rose: Oh, come on! Even Dusty says that you don't stand up to you mom!
Paul: Because Dusty's got an agenda! He's a liar, Rose! Can't you see that --
Rose: Maybe he's the only objective voice in all of this noise!
Paul: Oh, okay. You want to hear an objective voice? Listen to this!
Rose: What is it?
Paul: It's a tape of messages left on my mother's voice mail.
Rose: Come on! That could mean anything! Anyone with a computer can make up messages.
(Answering machine tape)
Dusty: Barbara, it's Dusty. The renovations on Rose's beauty shop are about to begin. I need that $25,000 fast. Where are you that you don't have your cell phone? (Machine beeps.) Barbara, it's me again. Where are you? I've left you half a dozen messages. The money never showed up in my account. I need that money. Today. Call me.
(Machine beeps.)
Rose: It's just one of Barbara’s tricks. Dusty knows. He's not gonna lie to me. He knows what the Roller Palace means to me, and he knows what your mom has done to me - to us! He would never lie to me about this!
Paul: And I would?
Rose: No! No, it's just that I know him. And I - he's been there for me, and I trust him.
Paul: And you have feelings for him. Don't you, Rose?
Rose: What are you talking about? Dusty is your best friend! He is footing the bill for my future!
Paul: Do you have feelings for him?
Rose: Yeah. Yeah. I got feelings for Dusty. I'm grateful to him for what he's done for me. And the way that he has backed me up. Why are you making more of this than it is?
Paul: Because there is more going on between you two than gratitude. It's the only thing that makes sense, Rose. I've been trying to figure out why we cannot seem to make that step - that next step. We just get stuck in neutral -
(talking over each other)
-everything in your power to sabotage our relationship. You left for Italy, you dropped off the face of the earth, and then you come back to town and you set up shop with my best friend after refusing my help. And then you kidnapped my mother, and now you are defending bizarre financial dealings that Dusty has lied about from the beginning! What am I supposed to think, Rose?
Rose: I love you. And I've made some mistakes. I've made some big mistakes. We all have. What do you want me to do?
Paul: I only want one thing. You. I want you to choose me. Unconditionally. It's up to you.

Some lust thrown in there - 05.07.03

Paul (with flowers): For you.
Rose: What's the occasion?
Paul: Just to remind you that, no matter what I said last time we were together, that I still love you.  And there might be some lust thrown in there, too.
Rose: They're beautiful.  So what do you think?  Hmm?
Paul: So this is it, huh?  It's finished?
Rose: Yeah, just turn on the blow-dryers.  We're ready to go.
Paul: It is spectacular, Rose.  I had no idea you were this far along.
Rose: Neither did I.  Dusty had the construction workers all night long.  Yeah, working around the clock.
Paul: Without letting you know?
Rose: Well, you know, he wanted it to be - you know.
Paul: A surprise.
Rose: Yes.  Yes, he did.  He had it done.  Look at that.  Must've cost him an arm and a leg.
Paul: You mean, it must've cost my mother an arm and a leg.
Rose: Right.  Yes.  We can't forget that little tidbit now, can we?
Paul: So did you have a chance to talk some things over with him?
Rose: Yeah.  I told him I couldn't be his partner anymore.
Paul: That probably wasn't easy.
Rose: No.
Paul: Well, what I want you to do is I want you to get a breakdown of his costs.  I'll cut him a check.  And then he'll be out of our lives for good.
Rose: Well, he's already out.  You don't have to cut him a check.
Paul: What do you mean?
Rose: Dusty offered to be a silent partner.  Which means he keeps his investment, gets a return on his profits.  I don't see him at all.  That's it.
Paul: And what did you say?
Rose: I said you didn't - I thought maybe you wouldn't like it.
Paul: I have to be honest with you.  That's not the arrangement I had in mind.
Rose: I know that.  But then I'm sitting here thinking, you know, maybe it's not such a bad deal.  Right?  Dusty gets a big return on his money, and you get me all to yourself.  Everybody wins.  Right?
Paul: He lied to you, Rose.  How can you find that acceptable in a partner, silent or otherwise?
Rose: He - he borrowed money from your mom.  And he wasn't up front about that at first, but he has - he has come through for me time and time again -
Paul: No, he didn't tell you for a reason, because he was working behind your back with my mother.  He's a liar, Rose.  Why can't you see that?
(Rose groans.)
Rose: I'm not gonna let him get anything over on me.  Don't worry.  I'm asking you to give me this - this one thing.  Can you do that for me, please?
Paul: You still have faith in him, don't you?  I see.  Well, since my word is not good enough for you, I'll just have to find proof that Dusty is no good.
Rose: Look, there's gonna be a party - here tonight. An opening party.  I'd really like you to come.
Paul: Is Dusty invited?
Rose: He put the whole thing together.  I can't ask him not to come.
Paul: Oh, no.  Of course not.  We don't want to upset Dusty, now, do we?

Not same old Rosie - 05.09.03

Paul: Hey!  Get your filthy hands off her, or I'll kill you!  I said, get your damn hands off of her!
Rose: Paul, don't do this!  Don't!  You wanna yell at somebody, you yell at me!  But don't do anything you're gonna regret!  You gotta go.  Just go.
Dusty: Not when he's acting like this.
Rose: Listen, I will see you at the opening later.  Please, just go.  Please?
Dusty: No, I don't think it's a good idea.
Rose: Please?
Dusty: Okay.  I don't know what to say to you.
Rose: I know you don't want to hear this, but I'm sorry.  You have no idea how sorry I am.
Paul: You know, I've always known you could be unpredictable.  But cruel?  This is a new one.
Rose: I never meant to hurt you.  I - I swear.
Paul: And what exactly did you expect when you called me over to see that?
Rose: I didn't invite Dusty.  He just was here.  And then I just - I just didn't expect -
Paul: You didn't expect what?  You didn't expect what, Rose?  To choose Dusty over me?  That's exactly what you're doing, isn't it?
Rose: What you just saw there - I mean, the kissing?  That's as far as it went.  It's just that I got all these feelings that I can't quite figure out.
Paul: Well, allow me to help you.  You're hot for a second-rate con man, and you're too dumb to know it.
Rose: I may not have that fancy education that you have, but I am smart when it comes to people, and I know people.
Paul: Then how can you be so blind, Rose?  Dusty's got secrets.  Why else would he be bumming money from my mother?  And that loan he got from her wasn't as simple as he made it sound.  He's been working for her.
Rose: You don't have any proof of that.
Paul: Why would I lie to you?  Why would I lie to you when it's obvious he's been lying to you the whole time?
Rose: Yeah, well, this isn't about Dusty.  This is about us.
Paul: Is there even an "us" left to talk about?
Rose: I don't know.
Paul: All right.  Well, here's another question I don't want the answer to.  Do you love me?
Rose: I loved you more than I thought I could possibly love anybody.
Paul: "Loved."
Rose: Well, see, it's not that simple.
Paul: You know, a year ago, all you wanted to do was get married.  That's all I wanted, all I still want.  What changed?
Rose: Me.  I knew it when I got off the plane from Italy.  I knew it.  Then I saw you.  And we had this energy again.  And I thought - you know, maybe it was all in my head.  You know, maybe I was the same old Rosie.  But you know what?  I'm not.  And I am so sorry.
Paul: So am I.  Because Dusty is gonna break your heart.  And this time, I'm not gonna be there to pick up the pieces.

Roller Palace Party - 05.09.03/05.12.03

Paul: You've been set up, Rose.
Barbara: Paul!
Paul: So have I.
Dusty: Paul, we know you're upset -
Paul: Shut up, Dusty.  It's been going on for months.
Rose: What?  What, what has?  You're scaring me, Paul.  What's going on?
Paul: I told you they were working together, and I was right.  They were at it before Dusty even came to Oakdale.  These are copies of receipts from the Drake Hotel in Chicago and the Lakeview.  She's paying his bills, Rose.  She owns him.
Barbara: Give those to me, Paul.  Give them to -
Paul: Hey, hey, back up.  Think about it, Rose.  It all makes sense.  Dusty was broke, so Barbara paid off his debts.  All he had to do was break us up.
Barbara: That is insane, Paul.
Paul: You know what?  You can shut your mouth, 'cause no one is listening to what you have to say, anyway.  But as for your partner Dusty - how about it, Dusty?  True or false?  Oh, come on, old pal.  Just this once, be half the man you used to be and tell Rose the real reason why you've been coming on to her since the first step you took in Oakdale.  Come on.  Tell her the truth, man.  I dare ya.
Rose: Dusty - is this true?  Is this why Barbara was paying you money?
Say something!  Did Barbara pay you to break up me and Paul?
Paul: And all this time Rose thought you were just trying to help make her dreams come true.  But we know that's not true, don't we, Dusty?  This whole beauty shop thing - it was nothing but a way for Dusty to get closer to you. That is why my mother footed the Bill.  Because she would've paid anything to get you out of my life.  Isn't that right, Barbara?
Barbara: Okay, okay.  I ran into Dusty in Chicago.  It was quite by accident, and he told me his sad tale, that he had fallen on hard times. Actually, he said that he was broke.  And I thought I'd help him.  I felt sorry for him, Paul.  So I put him up at the Drake for a couple of nights.  I thought - I thought, you know, this is your old friend.  I thought I was doing the right thing, being kind.  I was doing it for you, for John.  And if he came and made a pass and come on to Rose, I had nothing to do with it.  I would never do anything to hurt you.  You know that.
Paul: So if you'd just seen him in Chicago, then why'd you act like you hadn't seen him in years when you saw him at his welcome home party?
Barbara: Because he wanted everyone to believe that he was still rolling in cash.  I was covering for him.
Paul: It was so perfectly staged.  They even arranged it so Dusty was the one who threw her out.  You remember that, Rose?
Rose: Yeah, I remember.
Barbara: Well, I did that for Dusty.  He didn't want friends to know that he had fallen on hard times.  Come on, Dusty, tell them.
Rose: Yeah.  Come on, tell me.
Dusty: Rose, Barbara hired me to break off your engagement.  I am sorry.
(Rose slaps Dusty.)
Paul: I'll take you home, Rose.
Barbara: Paul, Paul, you can't believe him.  He's a crook!  He's lying! Paul, I wouldn't do this to you!

Thus, the tale ends - 05.12.03

Rose: So - wanna come in?
Paul: For what?
Rose: Can I make you a drink?  Is there anything else that I can get you?
Paul: What do you have in mind?
Rose: An apology.
Paul: I'm not really in the mood.  What else you got?
Rose: I don't know what else to say to you.
Paul: What's left to be said?  I mean, since our breakup didn't have anything to do with Dusty, right?  Whatever was broken before is still broken.
Rose: I made a mistake.
Paul: A mistake?  I feel like I've been thrown through a wood chipper, and you call it all a mistake.
Rose: I'm sorry.  I'm so sorry.
Paul: That's funny, because you say that like you think you can make all this better.  And how would you do that, Rose?  By kissing me?  Making love to me?  Marrying me?
Rose: I don't know!
Paul: You know, we were engaged, Rose.  He was my best friend.  Did any of that matter to you when you were kissing me?  What the hell am I thinking?  Of course it didn't matter.  Because I am good old Paul.  Easy to lie to, easy to cheat on, easy to dump.
Rose: That's not true!  I love you!
Paul: Hey, hey, hey, hey.  Be careful.  You sound like my mother when you say that.
Rose: Paul, how can you say that to me?  I am nothing like her.
Paul: No?
Rose: No.
Paul: She uses people to get what she wants.  She doesn't love anybody.
Rose: I never, ever felt that way about you!
Paul: Yeah, you didn't mean to use me.  I just got in the way.  Well, you don't have to worry about that anymore.
Rose: No, don't go, please.  Not until we - can we - at least, let's just talk this through.
Paul: Why?  Why should we?  So we can try again?
Rose: I'm willing.  If you are.
Paul: You have got to be out of your mind if you think that I would ever let you use me like that again.
Rose: I did not use you!
Paul: What do you call it, then?
Rose: Look, you have every right - every right to hate me.
Paul: No, Rose, I don't want to hate you.  I don't wanna hate you.  Hate is just as strong an emotion as love is.  No.  I want to feel nothing.  I want to look at your face and hear your name and have it not even register.  I want your eyes, your smile, your touch to be erased from my memory.  I want to forget you, Rose.  Because if I think one more second about what an idiot I was to love you -
Rose: No, don't go!  Look, look - no, don't go.  No, don't just - not this way.  Okay?  I want you to just listen to me.  You were not - never a mistake! (sobbing)
Rose: You were the best thing that ever happened to me.  And all those memories that you want to wipe away, you can't do that, because they're my memories, too!  And I love them.  I love every single one of them.  I mean, that day - that first day in the airport, you said that I was your lucky charm. Remember?
Paul: Stop it.
Rose: And that was the first day -
Paul: Stop it!
Rose: - Oh, the love that you had for me, that I never deserved.  You loved me.  Even when I looked like an old lady.  You loved me.  Every kiss, every touch, every time we danced, every time we made love - you are tattooed on my heart.  You are a part of me now.  Now and forever.
Paul: I'm not part of you, Rose.  I'm already gone.
Rose: No, no, no, no!  You're never gonna be gone!  Because the love that you gave me is the best thing that ever happened to me!  And I am never letting you go!  Paul!  No.
