Friends are one of the most important things to have in
life. A true
friend is there for you when you are feeling down or if you are upset about
something. They are there for you with a shoulder to cry on and always have the
right thing to say to you. Sometimes childhood friends drift apart when they
grow up, but true friendships withstand time.
From the television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the characters Willow
Rosenburg and Xander Harris have been friends since childhood. They grew up
together and knew each other inside and out. Since adolescence, Willow has had
feelings toward Xander which were more then friend feelings. She had always
wanted to tell Xander how she felt, but never did because he was always pining
over other girls, and she did not want to ruin the friendship between them.
Through all of this, Xander remained oblivious towards Willow's feelings and
thought of her as his best friend.
After Buffy came to Sunnydale, she told Willow to "carpe diem" (seize the
day) and clue Xander in to her feelings because something could happen and she
might not ever be able to tell him. Willow took this into consideration but
never allowed herself to tell him until she caught him kissing Cordelia one day.
After that, Xander knew something was wrong but Willow did not mention it again
to him. When she fell into a coma because of the bookcase that fell on her,
Xander finally realized he had feelings towards Willow, but by that time she had
already had a boyfriend (and werewolf) named Oz. A year later when trying on
clothes for the Homecoming Dance, Willow and Xander felt an attraction to one
another and ended up kissing, only to deny their feelings and chalk it up to 'a
clothes fluke.' Since then they had a few stolen moments and kisses, but it
ended quickly when they were caught kissing by Oz and Cordelia in the basement
of the old factory once used for a home for Spike and Drusilla.
The reasons for Willow and Xander to be together are obvious. Friendship is the
basis for all relationships, whether it is your best friend or your boyfriend or
girlfriend. They are there for each other and always have been throughout the
five seasons. They love each other and would in a second put their life on the
line to save the other's life.
