Sweetwater Station
Character Profile

Marshal Sam Cain
portrayed by Brett Cullen

References have been made to Sam's wild past -- he is even referred to as a gunslinger, and many of the town's visiting "undesirables" know of his reputation.  In 1856, he was married to Jenny and working for $10 a week for a group of small-time ranchers trying to protect themselves in a range war with a cattleman's association.  Sam arrived home one night to find some men riding off his property; inside, his wife lay dead at the hearth.  An outraged Sam went on a vendetta to punish the men responsible, stopping only when he realized that his actions were hurting others as well.  Sam turned his energy and skill with the gun to upholding the law, and became Marshal of Sweetwater.

At some point during his first two years there, he romances Emma Shannon, though the courtship is unsuccessful.  In 1860 he renews his efforts with Emma, and this time she cannot resist him.  The duo are able to weather the return of Emma's estranged husband and emerge stronger for it.  In 1861, Sam is promoted to Territorial Marshal.  He marries Emma Shannon and the twosome leave Sweetwater.
