Chapter 34

“What?” snapped Sue at the grinning blue-eyed Heath sitting by her bed.

“Doc’s letting me go home today.” replied Heath happy to see the fire back in the emerald eyes.

“Good morning.  How are my two favorite patients?” asked Howard as he smiled at the two.

“Fine, Dr. Merar.” said Heath.

“You’re letting him go, but I have to stay?” asked Sue as she glared at the man at the foot of the bed.

“Well, Heath was not as sick as you.  You’ve also lost more weight.  You can go home when your lungs sounds better and you gain a few more pounds.” explained Howard calmly.

Sue’s mouth gaped open, “Doc, for pete’s sake, I don’t even get real food to eat!  How am I supposed to gain weight on that chicken, vegetable broth or whatever that stuff is.”

Howard laughed as he held the stethoscope to her back, “Deep breath.”

Taking a deep breath, Sue coughed from the congestion still in her lungs.  Heath handed her a glass of water and she took a small sip.

“Maybe today we could try some real food.” teased Howard.  “How about some oatmeal or porridge.”

Heath chuckled as Sue rolled her eyes and said, “Gee, thanks doc.”

“Anything for you, Miss Weston.” smiled Howard as he shook his hand.  “Heath, if you have any problems at all, you get back in here.  You don’t want to have a set back.”

“I will, Dr. Merar.  Thanks.” replied Heath as the doctor left the two friends alone.

Sue lay back against the pillows and sighed deeply, “I hate looking at these walls.”

Squeezing her hand, Heath smiled, “It won’t be for much longer.”

“Did the doc say how long before you can get back to work on the ranch?” asked Sue curiously.

“At least three weeks.  I can’t believe how tired I still get.” frowned Heath.  “I should have enough sleep stored up in me for at least a year.”

“I’m gonna miss ya’ Heath.” smiled Sue.  “Make sure Sonja takes good care of you now or she’ll have to answer to me.”

“I’ll give her the message.” chuckled Heath as he leaned forward and kissed her forehead.

“Hey, you’re kissing the wrong woman.” stated Nick as he and Jarrod walked in the room and chuckled at the blushed on Heath’s face.

“Morning, Sue.  Brother Heath, you ready to leave?” asked Jarrod.

“Boy howdy, am I ever.  Did you bring Charger?”

Nick laughed, “Jarrod’s giving you a ride home, little brother.  No horses for you for at least three weeks.  Doctor’s and Mother’s orders.”

Sue snickered as Heath’s face fell, “Have a nice ride home, Heath.”

“Thanks, my friend.  I’ll be thinking of you as I’m eating dinner tonight.” smirked Heath as he ducked the pillow that was thrown at him and dashed out the door with Jarrod following.

Retrieving the pillow from the floor, Nick frowned at the sadness on Sue’s face.  Sitting by her, he smiled, “What’s the matter?”

“Just feeling a little shut in.” sighed Sue.  “I can’t wait to leave here.”

“Is Charity coming by today?” asked Nick.

“Yeah, she’s bringing over some patterns to look at for the wedding.  What are you doing today?”

“Repairing some fencing, checking waterholes,  some other little things.” said Nick watching the wistfulness appear in the green eyes.  “Won’t be the same without you, though.”

“Thanks, Nick.” smiled Sue sadly.  “You better get going.”

“Do what Dr. Merar says and you’ll be out of here in no time.” whispered Nick as he pulled her close to him, his mouth savoring the sweetness of hers,  Breaking the kiss, Sue started coughing and gratefully accepted a glass of water.

Shaking his head, Nick teased,  “Must be the power I have over women!”

Rolling her eyes, she pushed on his arm, “Go on!  Go have a good time while I’m stuck here doing women stuff.”

Laughing, Nick leaned over and kissed her again, “I love you.  I’ll come back to see you tonight.”

Cupping his cheek, she whispered “I love you, too.”

Chapter 35

Jack walked into the study and sat in the chair by the settee.  Leaning back, he smiled and watched his boss sleep with Nicodena curled up beside her.  The period of confinement the doctor had ordered when he released her to go home had been tough on the normally active woman.   She longed to be out riding again and working with the men on the crew.   Sue had shocked Dr. Merar when she said she would follow his orders to the letter and not do anything that would cause a relapse.

Sue and Sonja helped Charity plan and organize the wedding.  The three were planning a trip to San Francisco to find the wedding gown and the dress Sue would be wearing as the maid of honor.   Heath had accepted the honor of being Jack’s best man.  Nick felt that since the women were going on a trip before the wedding, it was only fitting the men have the same opportunity.   He had told Jack and Heath he would let them know the details, but for now, it was a secret.

To occupy herself until she could return to her normal activities, Frederick Remington had sent her some canvas and oil paints.   Sue had always enjoyed drawing, but never had enough time from the ranch to take advantage of that talent.   When he had been visiting the ranch, he had liked her childhood drawings.  Stopping at the ranch on his way to San Francisco, he had visited her at the residence of Dr. Merar when he learned of her illness before continuing on.

Sue opened her eyes and smiled at the sight of Jack who sat in the chair with a far away look.

“Thinking about the honeymoon?” teased Sue as she sat up and stretched as Nicodena jumped down and ran out of the room.

“Sue!” replied Jack as his face turned crimson.  “Ladies shouldn’t say things like that!”

“Jack, I only see a rancher and a foreman here.” laughed Sue as she walked into the kitchen with Jack following.  “Coffee?”

“Sure.” said Jack as he sat at the table and gratefully took the cup.

“How are the new horses?” asked Sue as she sat across from him.

“They’re working out great.  Davey sure picked out some good ones.  No complaints from any of the men either.”

“I can’t wait to go out riding again.  What did Fred say when you told him what I thought about the rustlers?”

“He said to ‘quit reading those damn dime novels’.” chuckled Jack remembering the sheriff’s face.

“Oh great!” retorted Sue as she rolled her eyes.  “Don’t you think it’s kinda funny they’ve stopped all of a sudden?”

“Maybe they just figured it was time to move on, boss and get out while the getting was good.”

Sighing, Sue shook her head, “I think we’ll find out soon enough if I’m right or not.”

“Time will tell.” smiled Jack.  “You ready for the dinner tonight?”

“I still can’t believe Nick postponed his birthday like that.” whispered Sue quietly.

Reaching over, Jack squeezed her hand and stood, “Don’t look so sad.  Everything’s fine now.  I just wanted to stop to let you know what the sheriff said.   I’ll be back in time to get ready for the party.”

Sue smiled and nodded as Jack left.  Returning to the study, she pulled out the invitation Victoria had brought by the week before and stared at it as her mind wandered.

“Victoria, how nice to see you.”

Smiling, Victoria hugged the young woman, “It’s wonderful to see you on your feet again and back home.”

“Thanks.  I’m still weak and it doesn’t take much to tucker me out.” replied Sue as she sat in the chair by her guest.  “How’s Heath?”

“He’s much better now that he’s back to work.  I thought I was going to have to chain him to a chair to keep him in the house.”

Chuckling, Sue nodded, “I hate sitting around, too.”

Reaching into her pocket, Victoria held out the envelope to Sue.  Opening it and reading the invitation inside, Sue looked up in shock.

“Nick’s birthday was two months ago!  You mean, he didn’t have the party back then?”

“He wanted to wait until you and Heath had returned to Stockton.” explained Victoria quietly.  “Now that you are both better, it’s as good as time as any to have a celebration.”

Sue stood and walked to the window.  Looking out at the sunny day, she said quietly, “That’s why Heath and I were in town that day.  His present had arrived on the train and we took it over to Dan’s office.  I just assumed Dan had given it to Nick when I wasn’t there.  I didn’t think to ask about it.”

“Well, now you’ll have the chance to give it to him in person, which I’m sure he would enjoy much more.”

Wiping her eyes, Sue turned back to Victoria and smiled, “Guess I better make sure my lawyer didn’t abscond with his present, huh?”

Laughing, Victoria kept her arm around Sue’s shoulders as they walked to the front door.  Giving Sue a kiss on the cheek, Victoria winked, “I’ll see you and Jack, next week.”

Chapter 36

Silas smiled widely as he opened the front door to let the guests in.  Taking the hat of Jack, he bowed and whispered to the woman rancher, “Pleasure t’ see ya again, Miss Sue.”

Silas was startled and then glowed when she wrapped her arms around the older man and said quietly, “It’s wonderful to see you, Silas.  I missed you.”

“Mr. Nick’s bout wore out the floor waiting for ya’ all.”  stated Silas as Sue and Jack chuckled.  Seeing Heath walking down the stairs, Silas retired to the kitchen.

“Jack!  Sue, don’t you look beautiful tonight!  Jack, Charity’s in with the others.”

“Boss, I’ll leave you in Heath’s capable hands.” said Jack as he eagerly headed to the parlor.

Accepting a hug and kiss from her friend, Sue smiled, “You’re looking pretty handsome yourself.  How’s things lately?”

“Been pretty busy, how about you?” asked Heath feeling a hand on his arm.

“Little brother, the party’s in there.” growled Nick as he gave Heath a playful shove towards the parlor.

Sue laughed as Heath winked and muttered as he walked away, “Boy howdy, some people are awful touchy.”

“You look beautiful tonight.” smiled Nick as he wrapped his arms around her and kissed her gently.

“I figured since tonight was such a special occasion, I thought I’d surprise you and wear a dress.” teased Sue with a smile watching the hazel eyes lit up with desire.

“As long as you’re here, I don’t care what you wear.” whispered Nick as he lowered his lips to hers, stopping as his mother chided him.

“Nick, aren’t you going to invite Sue to come in out of the foyer?”

Nick groaned softly and stated loudly, “Yes, Mother.  We’re coming.”

Taking her arm as they walked into the parlor, he leaned over and growled, “Bet Heath had something to do with that!”

Catching Heath’s wink, Sue snickered and whispered, “I’m not taking that bet!”

Dinner had been a wonderful feast, the guests had thoroughly stuffed themselves and were enjoying an after dinner drink.  Seated on a chair listening to the ladies talking, Sue’s eyes met Nick’s across the room.  Winking, she received a wide grin in response.

“What do you think, Sue?” asked Charity.

“I’m sorry, Charity.” blushed Sue.  “What did you ask?”

“I asked if you wanted to take in the opera while we were in San Francisco?”

“Opera? You want to go to an opera?” asked Sue in a shocked voice.

“Yes, I would.” smiled Charity.  “Sonja’s never been to one either.”

Looking at their eager faces, Sue sighed, “If it’s that important to you, I guess we could go.”

Charity and Sonja excited about the new adventure, chatted nonstop with Audra and Marie about the trip.

Sue leaned over and whispered to Victoria, “Do they know that at an opera people sing in another language?  I’ve been to one and I said never again.  Now look at me!”

Rising, Victoria chuckled and patted her hand, “They’re so excited about going.  Maybe you’ll enjoy it this time.”

“Maybe when pigs fly.” whispered Sue listening to the women talk about the upcoming trip and wished she could go fishing with the men instead.

Opening the last gift, Nick stared at the statue he held in his hands.  He couldn’t believe the likeness of him and Coco.  Of all the gifts he had received, this one truly touched his heart.    Murmurs of appreciation ran through the guests at the sight of the bronze figure on his horse.

Setting the statue on the table, he smiled widely at the lady beside him and kissed the top of her head, “Thank you.  It’s beautiful.”

“You’re welcome, Nick.  I’m glad you like it.” said Sue softly as she stifled a yawn.

Seeing the exhaustion in her eyes, he whispered, “You okay?”

“With all the sleep I get during the day, you’d think I could stay awake at night.” replied Sue with a smirk.

“Com’on, let’s get you upstairs so you can lay down for a while.” stated Nick as he caught his mother’s nod of agreement and pulled her up.

Taking her hand, Nick led her to foyer.  Carrying her up the stairs, he laid her down on the bed in the guest room and covered her with a blanket.  He sat beside her and ran his fingers through a lock of her hair.

“Sorry, Nick.” said Sue softly as she stifled another yawn.

Smiling, he said softly, “Sue, it’s a big day for you, too.  This is your first day out of the house since doc sent you home.”

Holding his hand, Sue whispered sleepily, “I know.  I just wanted to be able to enjoy your party.  Heck, it’s not even seven thirty yet.”

“There’s plenty of time for parties in the future.” whispered Nick kissing her tenderly.  “Now close your eyes and get some rest.”

“Bossy.” whispered Sue as her eyes closed.

Grinning, Nick caressed her cheek, “I love you, too.”

Chapter 37

Following a doctor’s orders of rest and nonexcitement made for some very long weeks on the woman rancher.   Drawing and painting helped the time pass, but it still seemed like an eternity.  Each day, she could feel her strength returning.  Her conscience effort at obeying Dr. Merar’s orders was rewarded by his declaration of a clean bill of health.   The days were cool as the winter months passed but having the deadly infection out of her body was a momentous occasion and one to be eternally thankful for.

“Davey, I’m gonna ride the fenceline since the boys are checking the herd.” called Sue.

“Okay, boss.” yelled Davey from the corral where he and Jose were working with a new mount.

Jack and Charity were visiting her parents back east.  The Jones had opted to live out the rest of their lives on a small farm in Virginia.   Jack had surprised Charity with train tickets for an early Christmas present knowing she had not seen her parents in five years.  The surprise and love in Charity’s eyes when she opened the gift pulled on Sue’s heartstrings.

Horace and Hank had headed back to Texas to visit their family members also.  The winter time was a slow time on the ranch and the absence of the three would not be felt as much as it would have been felt during the other seasons of the year.  Christmas was a favorite time of the year for Sue, her thoughts spinning as she thought of all the preparations that need to be completed for the upcoming holiday party.

Nudging Satan, she headed to the beginning of the fenceline. Trotting, she watched for breaks in the wire on the fence that divided her property from the old Swenson place.  The wind had been blowing fiercely last night and this was a necessary chore to prevent any cattle from wandering off the property.

Riding by the spot that fenced off the petroleum, she noticed the boards that were down.  Stopping she tied Satan to the fence.  Opening her saddlebags, she took out the hammer and nails.   Holding the end of a board, she pounded the nails in, securing them one at a time.

Her thoughts churning as she remembered the problems this black liquid had caused her in the past.  Travis’ crazy eyes flashed before her causing a shiver to run down her spine.   Each time she rode by this spot it brought back the memories of the panic that had risen in her during her captivity in the cabin and the wild flight to freedom.

Shaking her head, she spoke to Satan, “Can’t believe after all this time, I feel like he’s still watching.”

Satan pushed his nose into her shoulder.  Grinning, she rubbed his nose, “Yeah, I know.  You took care of him for me.  This place still gives me the creeps though.”

Putting the tools back in her saddlebags, she climbed on and rode down the fenceline happy to be away from the spot that could still cause her to have nightmares at night.

Seeing no other sections of the fence down, she turned and headed to Stockton.

Chapter 38

Mr. Foster looked up from his desk and smiled, “Miss Weston!  Wonderful to see you.  How are you feeling?”

“Much better, Mr. Foster.  How about yourself?”

“Fair to midlin.  Got your mail right here.” stated Mr. Foster handing her a stack of letters and magazines.

“Thanks.  Uh, Mr. Foster, I consider you a friend and if you weren’t doing anything on Christmas, maybe you’d like to come out for dinner?” inquired Sue and then added hastily.  “Of course, I’d understand if you felt uncomfortable.”

“Well, I hadn’t any plans to speak of since Jamie’s back east.” replied the older man.  “Miss Weston, I would be honored to join you for Christmas dinner.”

Sue breathed a sigh of relief and smiled, “Great.  The more the merrier I always say!  Just bring yourself cause we’ll have everything else.  The Baldwins are joining us too, maybe you could ride out with them.”

“I’ll speak to Dan about it.”

“Well, I gotta get back to the ranch.” replied Sue.

Putting a hand on her arm, Mr. Foster said quietly, “Thank you for thinking of me.  I consider you a friend also.”

Giving his hand a squeeze, Sue nodded and left.   Tucking the mail in her saddlebags, Sue couldn’t erase the smile from her face and felt the happiness in her heart.  She loved this season!   Giving is much better than receiving.  She had always felt this and practiced it faithfully.

“Boy Howdy, I’m almost blinded by that smile.” teased Heath from the boardwalk as he watched his friend’s face.

“Hi Heath!  Better not let Nick catch ya’ in town in the afternoon, he’ll probably skin you alive.” chuckled Sue.

“He would have if he hadn’t sent me into town himself.” laughed Heath.

“You and your family are still coming to dinner, aren’t ya?”

“Sure are.  Have you heard from Jack and Charity?”

“I got a wire saying they arrived.  Have you heard from Sonja?” inquired Sue with a smile.

“She’s having a wonderful time with her family.  I can’t wait til she gets back.” admitted Heath with a wistful smile.  “Sure is lonely without her.”

“Well, maybe you should do something about that cowboy.” suggested Sue with a smile.

“Trying to marry me off, Sue?” asked Heath as they rode beside each other back to their respective ranches.

“Heath, would I do that?” chuckled Sue.  “Hey, are you still going to see Hannah next week?”

“Yeah.  I wish I could convince her to move to Stockton.  I worry about her in that town, especially with Rachel being gone now.”

“I know, Heath.  If you didn’t mind the company, I’d love to see her again.” said Sue.

“I’d love the company.  Nick might get jealous though.” grinned Heath slyly.

Laughing, Sue retorted, “I like to keep my men on their toes.”

Stopping at the fork in the road, Heath smiled, “I’m leaving on Monday morning.  I’ll come by and pick you up.”

“Sounds good.  See you in a couple days.” said Sue turning down the road to the ranch house.

Chapter 39

“What do you mean you’re going to Strawberry with Heath?”  growled Nick as he closed the door to the study behind them.

Pouring drinks for both of them, Sue handed one to Nick.  “Just what I said, Nick.  I wanted to see Hannah again and asked Heath if I could ride with him.”

“How come you didn’t ask me?”

Staring at the man seated across from her, Sue said quietly, “Excuse me.  I don’t think I heard you correctly?”

“I said how come you didn’t ask me.” stated Nick puzzled by her tone of voice.

“Ask you what?  Ask if you thought it was a good idea?  Ask if I had your permission?  What exactly should I have asked you, Nick?” snapped Sue angrily.

Blushing, Nick shook his head, “That’s not what I meant.  I meant if you wanted to see her, why didn’t you ask me to take you?”

“Are you saying I’m not capable of traveling by myself?” asked Sue incredulously.

“What is wrong with you tonight?  You’ve been edgy all night.” snarled Nick.  “I didn’t say anything like that!   It’s like you’re spoiling for a fight.”

Listening to his words accented by his flailing arms, Sue sighed and walked to the window.

“I am on edge.  I didn’t get much sleep last night.” admitted Sue.  “Sorry for snapping at you.”

Frowning, Nick stood behind her and put his arms around her waist.  Pulling her back against him, he whispered in her ear, “I didn’t mean for the words to come out the way they sounded.  Are you feeling okay, honey?”

“It was just some bad dreams.” stated Sue softly.

Holding her tighter, Nick said quietly, “The only time you’ve got bad dreams is after you ride over by the old Swenson property.  Is that why?”

Taking a deep breath, Sue nodded, “I was checking the fences.  I’m sorry for taking it out on you.  I love you, Nick.”

“I love you.” whispered Nick as he held her closer, breathing in her scent.

Nibbling on her ear softly, Nick worked his way down her neck searing her skin with his kisses.  Moaning from the sensation his lips were creating, Sue turned in his arms.   Pulling his head to her, she hungrily sought his mouth and leaned into his body.   Her passion arousing him, Nick sought to meld his body into hers.  Pulling her down to the floor, she lay on top of him aware of the arousal she was causing with each move.

Passion sweeping through them, their senses reeled at the burning in their bodies.    He ran his hands over her breasts and teased her with his tongue in her mouth.   Groaning with need, she opened his shirt and ran her hands over his chest and hard stomach.   Hands exploring each other, they lay on the hard floor, unaware of anything but each other and their desires.

Moaning, he pulled his mouth away and stared into the scorching emerald eyes, wild with desire.  “Honey..”

“I know we can only go so far, but I need you to be with me tonight, Nick.” whispered Sue breathlessly.

Picking her up, he carried her through the adjoining door to her bedroom and placed her on the bed.  Pulling her to him, they savored each other in a lingering kiss.   Their hands discarded clothing and continued their exploration of each other, building up to a fevered pitch.

Laying in each other’s arms, Nick kissed the auburn hair of the sleeping woman and tightened his hold on her before allowing sleep to claim him.

Chapter 40

Her lungs bursting she gasped for the precious air as the panic overwhelmed her pushing her onward.  Branches slapped at her face and body as she ran.  Every corner she turned, he was there leering at her.  His eyes taunting her as she struggled to get away to continue her search for Nick.

Hearing the laugh of a woman, she ran towards it.   The raven-haired woman had her claw like hands holding Nick in place by her, the cruel laughter stopping Sue in her wild frenzied search.

“Sue!  Wake up!” urged Nick his heart in his throat as he shook the perspiring woman.  She jumped out of bed and backed to the wall.

Nick rose slowly from the bed and quietly spoke as he walked towards her.  “It’s me, honey.  It’s just a bad dream, you’re safe.”

Hearing Nick’s gentle voice speaking to her, Sue ran her hands over her face to work through her confused state of mind the nightmares would create.  Taking a deep shaky breath, she leaned against the wall, sapped of all her strength.

“Hell of a way to wake up, huh?” whispered Sue closing her eyes and breathing slowly to calm her fears.

Nick, the rush of adrenaline leaving his body from the abrupt waking, reached trembling hands towards her.

“Come here.” whispered Nick pulling her to him and wrapping his arms around him.  Holding her tightly, he shared his strength to combat the evils her mind created.  “You okay?”

Hanging onto him and embarrassed by what he had witnessed, she said quietly, “Sorry for startling you, Nick.”

Nick lifted her chin with his fingers and brushed her lips with his, “It’s okay, honey.  I’ve had some bad dreams myself.  I’m just glad to be here to hold you.”

“We should put some clothes on.” whispered Sue, aware of the tingling in her as she felt his hard body against hers.

“Who needs clothes?” whispered Nick his hazel eyes burning with desire.  “I love you, Suzanne Weston.”

Staring deeply into the hazel eyes full of emotion, she moaned as his fingers moved over her, “I love you, Nick Barkley.”

Smiling into the emerald eyes, he brought his mouth to hers and aroused the passions that lay simmering underneath the surface.  Trembling with the desire to be close and the longings to satisfy their needs, the conscious restraints keeping them apart crumbled and fell away.

With the full moon’s light shining on the glistening bodies that were entangled, each electric touch and kiss feed the passionate fire between them.   The friction between them burning the fire brighter and they instinctively moved in a rhythm together, heightening the wild passion.  Reaching an uncontrolled level of desire and need, they succumbed to a glorious climax.  Holding on tightly, they savored the moment and the love between them as their souls merged into one.

Wrapping his arms around her, Nick gently kissed the full lips and smiled at his exhausted bed partner’s satisfied smile.  “I never break a promise, my dear.”

“What promise is that, Nick?” asked Sue softly caressing his cheek.

Kissing the palm of her hand, he said softly, “I promised to show you how much I cared when you got your strength back.  Remember?”

“I thought you were just going to take me out to dinner.” teased Sue with a slight shiver at the touch of Nick’s hand rubbing her back.

“I’d better go.  If I stay here all night, your men are gonna string me up.” murmured Nick watching her face as he ran his hand gently over her back and down her side.

“Hmmm.” moaned Sue running her tongue over his lips in response to his hands on her body.  Growling from desire, he used his leg to push her onto her back and deepened the kiss, setting the fire to blaze again.  The roaring flames burning them until they were extinguished, leaving the two gasping from the intensity of their response to each other.

Shortly after one, an exhausted love filled Nick regrettably crawled out of the warmth of her arms.  Fully dressed, he leaned over and kissed the sleeping woman softly.  The cold of the December night air could not extinguish the blaze that was still roaring inside as he made his way back onto Barkley range.

Chapter 41

The town of Strawberry, once a thriving place of business and wealth, was now just another desolate reminder of man’s desire for riches and greed.  The buildings were slowly rotting away just like the town itself had.

Riding up the main street with his friend by his side, Heath’s eyes never strayed to the hotel which was still open.  The owners, his aunt and uncle, were the only business people left in the town surviving on the chance of a customer stopping off the trail.  The livery which had once been operated by a kind man who had befriended him as a boy, shut down after the man’s death.

Strawberry was just as Heath had described it to Sue in the past.  This unforgotten place still held painful memories of the treatment he and his mother received during his life there.   Leah and her two friends had been the only continually bright spot in a dark world that he grew up in.   Anger rose inside of her at the thought of the treatment Heath and his mother had received at the hands of his relatives.   To her, a child was a blessing that you rejoiced at.  Not an evil creature that you cursed and cruelly treated.

Glancing sideways, Sue saw the muscles in Heath’s face clenched tightly and spoke softly.  “With luck Heath, you’ll never have to see this place again.”

Nodding, Heath didn’t verbally acknowledge his friend’s words or look at her.  The anger welled in him as the memories from the past assaulted him.  Stopping outside a small graveyard, the two dismounted.

Taking Charger’s reins, Sue waited for Heath to pay his respects to the fine woman who had reared him unselfishly, giving all she had to her son.   On her death bed, she had given him her final gift, another family.

Brushing the tears from his eyes, Heath walked back to Sue and took the reins from her.  Looking at her with a question in the sky blue eyes, Sue smiled, “I’ll come back later.  Let’s go see Hannah.”

Not trusting his voice, Heath nodded and they walked further up the street to the small house surrounded by a haphazard picket fence.  Tying Charger and Rio up, Heath grinned as he heard the singing of a gospel song coming from behind the dwelling.  Following the sound, they rounded the corner of the house.  Hannah, sensing movement behind her, turned and stared at the man walking towards her.

“Heath?  That you?” gasped Hannah as she threw her arms around him.  “Tis my boy come back t’ visit.”

Hugging the tiny woman, Heath kissed her cheek and took off his hat, “Hannah, it’s good to see ya’.  You’re looking as beautiful as ever.”

Hannah scowled, “Your mama rais’d ya’ not to lie, boy.  Who’s that with ya’ Heath?”

Sue took off her hat and stood by Heath.  “Miss James, I met you once in Texas with Miss Leah.”

Smiling, Hannah nodded as she hugged the woman, “Miss Sue!  Sure ‘nough is you.  I remembers those eyes shining like green apples.  You’s a long ways from Texas, Miss Sue.”

“Nice to see you again, Miss James.”

“Oh I’s forgot my manners!  Come to the house, ya’ must be awful tir’d after ya’ trip.”

Heath took Hannah’s arm as they walked to the house.  Pouring coffee for all three, they sat around the small dining table.

“Hannah, we’ve come a long ways to talk to ya’ about something.” said Heath quietly.  “We’d like you to move to Stockton and be close to us.  I’ve already picked out a small house for you on the edge of town.”

Patting his hand, Hannah smiled, “Tis kind of ya’s to think of ole Hannah.  I’s couldn’t leave ya’ mama and Rachel.”

“You wouldn’t have to leave them Miss James.” replied Sue softly.  “We’d come back and move them.  They’d be with you in the spring.”

“Hannah, I’m so worried about you here all alone.” pleaded Heath.  “You’re too far away and it’s dangerous here.”

Walking a few steps to the small stove, Hannah brought the coffee and refilled the cups.  Setting the coffeepot on the table, Sue and Heath could tell he was thinking on the suggestion.    Hannah looked at Leah’s boy and smiled at the love that shone in his eyes.

“Ya’s a pleas’re ta this ole woman’s heart, Heath.  Iff’n I’s leave, ya’ sure ya’ can move ‘em?”

Holding her hands in his, Heath’s eyes welled with tears of relief.  “I promise, Hannah.”

Chapter 42

Sue left the small house with Heath and Hannah discussing what she would bring with her for now and what she would leave behind for later.  Walking up the street, she entered the small graveyard and made her way to Leah’s spot.

Kneeling and bowing her head, she sent her silent prayers upwards to the woman that had raised such a fine son and friend.  Regret flowed through her at the loss of a woman at such a young age.  Smiling, she remembered Leah as she had seen her that first day in Texas, when she had stepped off the train with Hannah in tow.

“Leah, you raised a fine man who found the family you knew he would.” said Sue quietly.  Standing and turning, she almost stepped on the woman standing before her.

Martha’s shock at seeing Heath riding down the street was doubled when she saw the beautiful woman by his side.  Jealously flew through her at the sight of the beauty of this young woman.  The years had not been kind to her and the man she had married only further worsened her life.  The lines on her face were not from worry or laughter,  but from the harshness that lived within her very soul.

When Leah was alive, she had a scapegoat that allowed the harshness to show through.  Her son was a constant source of resentment to Martha who could never conceive.  Her barrenness finally destroying what gentleness she ever had inside of her.

“What are you doing here with him?” snarled Martha.

Looking into eyes that had no gentleness, Sue calmly replied, “None of your damn business.”

Grabbing Sue’s arm in a viselike grip, she screamed, “I asked you a question!”

The emerald eyes, hardened with fury and Martha heard the cold voice, “Move it or you’ll be missing some fingers.”

Martha’s shrill was the only thing heard in the dead town,  “He’s a bastard!  He’s made from sin!”

Pulling her arm out of her grip, Sue looked at her with disgust, “You’ve never been good enough to clean his boots or his mother’s.”

Shoving Heath’s aunt out of the way, Sue walked past her.  An angry Martha chased after her shouting, “He ruined us!  He should never have been born!  She should have drowned him!”

Heath and Hannah hearing the screaming, rushed to the graveyard.  Hannah’s hand flew to her mouth at the sight of Sue holding onto Martha.

Outraged by the words of hatred, Sue had grabbed the woman by the throat, “You say anything about Heath again and it’ll be the last thing you say.”

Heath rushed over as Sue pushed the stunned Martha to the ground.  Seeing Heath coming, Martha opened her mouth and paused,  the green eyes pinning her to the ground with a stare and the movement of her hand.

”Go ahead, say it.  Give me an excuse to rid the world of you.” retorted Sue coldly with her hand by her gun.

Heath merely glanced at the woman sitting on the ground and walked past his aunt to his friend.

“Sue, let’s go.”

“Sure, Heath.” smiled Sue walking back to where a concerned Hannah stood.

“Sorry about that, Miss James.” said Sue softly as the three walked back to the cabin.

“Ya’s okay, Miss Sue?” asked Hannah as they reached the house.  “They’s bad people.”

Sue chuckled, “I know they are.  The sooner we get you outa here, the better.”

Sitting on the porch after dinner and watching the sunset, Sue smiled at the hand on her shoulder.

“She all packed Heath?”

Heath nodded as he sat next to Sue on the step, “Almost.”

Squeezing her hand, he flashed her a lop sided grin, “How did you know that was why she wouldn’t leave here?  I’d almost given up hope of having her closer to me.”

“Woman’s intuition.” teased Sue.  Throwing the dregs of the coffee onto the ground, she shrugged her shoulder.   “She’s old and she’d feel obligated to stay by her friends and family.  At least, that’s what I was hoping.”

“I’m sorry about what Aunt Martha did today.” said Heath quietly.

Putting her arm over his shoulders.  “I should’ve just shot her.  The world could use a few less varmints in it.”

Heath snorted, “Then I’d have to face Nick and tell ‘em you were in jail again.  Nobody in their right mind would want to do that, no thanks!.”

“Well as the old saying goes, Heath.   You can pick your friends, but you sure as hell can’t pick your relatives.” laughed Sue softly.

Grinning, Heath agreed, “I’m sure glad I picked you for a friend.”

“Oh please!  I picked you.  You didn’t pick me!” retorted Sue sarcastically giving him a playful shove and then squealing in laughter as he tickled her.

The next morning, Heath and Sue carried the items that Hannah had packed out to the small wagon they had obtained from behind the livery.  After fixing the wheel, they hooked Rio up to it and drove it to Hannah’s house.

Climbing onto the seat by Hannah, Heath smiled,  “Are you sure you don’t want to stop and say goodbye to mama and Aunt Rachel, Hannah?”

“I’s said goodbye in my prayers.” stated Hannah firmly patting his hand.

Climbing on Charger, Sue rode beside the wagon as they headed to Stockton without a backwards glance.

Chapter 43

Stopping in front of the small cabin on the outskirts of town, Hannah gasped, “Beautiful, Heath.”

Sue dismounted and tied up Charger while Heath helped Hannah down.  The two walked up to the door and were met by the Barkleys.   Hannah nodded her greetings as Heath introduced everyone.

Victoria took the older woman’s hand in hers and smiled, “Miss James.  Heath has told us so much about you.  I know he’ll feel much better knowing you are near.”

“Thank ya’ Mrs. Barkley.  My boy, Heath’s, a fine boy.” replied Hannah softly as Victoria’s eyes shone with motherly love.

“Boys, please bring in Miss James’ things.” said Victoria as she took Hannah’s arm and walked her into the house.

“Great to have you back, little brother.” said Nick slapping Heath on the back as he passed him on his way to the woman taking her saddlebags off Charger.

Sue smiled at the handsome cowboy approaching, “Hi Nick.”

“Hi yourself.” replied Nick as he kissed her briefly, longing for more. “Did you have a good trip?”

“It was interesting.” said Sue with a small smile.  “I’ll be glad when Heath never has to return there again.”

“I hate it when he goes there.  So, what happened?” inquired Nick with concern.

Shaking her head, she put a hand on his chest.  “I’ll tell you later.  Right now, I want to get Hannah settled in.”

“Oh, okay.” replied Nick disappointment in his eyes.

Leaning forward, Sue whispered in his ear, “I missed ya’ Sunday morning, Nick.”

The hazel eyes flared with raw emotion, “I missed you, too.”

“Nick! Are you gonna help or what?” called Eugene with a smile as Heath and Jarrod snickered.

“FOR PETE’S SAKE, EUGENE!” shouted Nick as Sue laughed and walked into the house.

Staring after her, Nick turned and snarled at his youngest brother, “Think you’re funny, don’t you?”

Seeing the look on Nick’s face, Eugene dodged away from his hands and into the safety of the house.

“YOU BETTER HIDE BEHIND MOTHER’S SKIRTS!” yelled Nick as he helped his brothers unload the items and carry them in the house.

Chapter 44

New Year’s Eve, Heath fidgeted nervously on the platform of the depot as he waited.  His heart pounding, his palms sweaty and his eyes lighting up at the sight of the train approaching.

Scanning the crowd, his breath caught in his throat as she stepped out on the platform of the car.  Stepping over, he grabbed her by the waist and swung her to the ground.

“Heath!” cried Sonja as she hugged her handsome cowboy.

Returning her hug, he held onto her tightly and whispered in her ear, “I missed ya’ honey.”

“I missed you two, cowboy.” smiled Sonja.  “Are you giving me a ride home?”

Taking her bags, Heath nodded, “Your carriage awaits my lady.”

Helping her into the surrey, Heath climbed in, “How was the visit with your family?”

“It was very nice.   Does Hannah like her new home?” asked Sonja.

Pulling up in front of the house she rented, Heath smiled, “She has settled in like a trooper.  I’m so happy we could convince her to move here.”

Unlocking the door, Sonja held the door for him and shut it behind her.  Taking off her hat, she put it on the table beside the door and asked, “How are Nick and Sue doing?”

Hearing the back door close and puzzled when her question didn’t receive an answer, she walked into the living room and gasped.

The room was set up with candles flickering and sending their glow throughout the darkened room.   On the table, a bottle of champagne was chilling with two crystal glasses beside it.

Taking her hand, Heath pulled her to a chair and placed her in it.  Kneeling down, he took both her hands and smiled warmly.

“Sonja, the first day you came into my life, was the day my life truly began.  I love your smile, your sense of humor and the way you giggle.  The warmth, kindness and generosity in you shines true for all to see.  Every night, I dream of your beautiful face.  Every morning, I long to wake up with you beside me.”

The tears welled in his eyes and Heath felt her hands squeeze his.

“You bring out the best in all those whose lives you touch and especially in me. I love you more than I could have ever imagined loving another human being.”

With tears streaming down her face, Sonja watched as her cowboy pulled a box from his pocket.  Opening it, her eyes widened at the diamond stone.

“Sonja Sorenson, may I have the honor of becoming your husband?”

Weeping openly, Sonja stared into the sky blue eyes and whispered, “Yes! Yes!”

Taking the solitaire from the box, Heath’s shaky fingers slid it on her left hand.  Lifting her hand, he kissed it and pulled her out of the chair onto him.

“I love you, Heath Barkley!” whispered Sonja as she straddled his lap and kissed him deeply.

Kissing the tears from her cheeks, he brushed his lips against hers.  “You’ve made me the happiest man in the world, darling.”

Holding her tightly against him, their mouths met and the kisses lengthened as their love swept them on a wild ride.  Her head tilted back, he explored the length of her neck with his mouth and groaned as she arched against him from the surge of desire.

Staring deeply into her brown eyes, he whispered huskily, “I’ve missed you terribly, honey.”

Moving against him, her heart pounded at his sharp intake of breath and moan of hunger.   Brushing her lips against his, she smiled at the fire in his eyes and whispered quietly, “Show me how much, Heath.”

Chapter 45

Two months later, the three women were about to embark on the shopping trip to San Francisco.  Nick, Jack and Heath watched, hiding their smiles, as Charity rolled her eyes in exasperation at her friend, “Suzanne, you don’t need your gun!”

Glaring at the men, Sue took off her gun and hung it on a hook by the door.

“Okay, just wait and I’ll get my knife.” replied Sue as she headed to the bedroom.

Charity stopped her and shook her head, “You don’t need that either, Suzanne.”

Shaking her finger at Charity and Sonja, she retorted, “Fine, but if we get robbed in San Francisco, don’t look at me when we come home penniless.”

“We’re only going to be gone three days, Sue.” smiled Sonja sweetly.  “If we need any protection, you can flatten them with a right hook.”

No longer able to contain themselves, the three men laughed out loud as Sue turned crimson and said brusquely  “Let’s go.”

The laughter following her outside as the others hurried to catch up to her.  Putting their bags in the back of the surrey, Nick climbed on the seat and picked up the reins.  Sue sat beside him and the other two women sat in the back talking excitedly about their upcoming adventure.

Nick smiled at the green eyed beauty beside him and slapped the reins to move the horses.  Jack and Heath followed on their horses discussing the spring branding that was coming up.

“I feel naked without my gun.” mumbled Sue.  “I’ll probably need it when we see that dang opera.”

Nick chuckled, “Relax and enjoy this break, honey.”

Sighing, Sue whispered, “Yeah, but you guys get to go fishing.  How fair is that!”

“If it’s any consolation, we’re not going until all the branding is done, my chameleon.” replied Nick seriously.

“Gee, that makes me feel better.  Thanks.” retorted Sue sarcastically as Nick chuckled.

Reaching the depot, the men carried their bags for them and set them by the bench.  Nick and Sue waited by the surrey for the train to arrive.

“Try not to have too much fun when you’re there.” grinned Nick.

“If it wasn’t for Charity, I’d stay home.” mumbled Sue.

Pulling her close, Nick nuzzled her neck and whispered,  “I’ll miss you.”

“I’ll miss you, too.” whispered Sue before his lips met hers.

Chapter 46

The train ride to San Francisco was long, though in reality, it was only a few hours long.  But to Sue Weston, it had seemed like an eternity.

Taking seats in the rapidly filling passenger car, Charity and Sonja sat beside each other facing Sue.  Her mood which had improved, helped along by the passionate goodbye kisses from Nick, took a spiral downwards as a portly gentleman occupied the empty seat next to her.   The cars rocked as the train headed out towards their destination.

“Good morning, Ladies.” bellowed the man. “Purcival McMann at your service.”

Sue rolled her eyes and looked out the window while Charity and Sonja exchanged greetings with the friendly man.

“Are you traveling to San Francisco?” asked Purcival noting the rings on the fingers of the ladies across form him.

“Yes, we are Mr. McMann.” replied Charity politely.

Glancing at the woman beside him, Purcival smiled at the ringless left hand.  “San Francisco has some wonderful restaurants and cultural exhibits.  I’m traveling there for business myself, however, I always try to take in the sights as much as I can when I’m there.  Miss Weston, are you planning on taking in the sights when you are there?” asked Purcival with a hopeful smile.

Watching the amusement light up her friends’ eyes, Sue glared at them and replied smartly,  “I’m not planning on leaving the house.”

“That would be a shame, Miss Weston.  You really must take in some of the exhibits.” stated Purcival.  “I could tell you some of the ones to visit if you would like.”

Realizing the gentleman was not going to let her ignore him, Sue sighed and asked.  “What type of business are you in, Mr. McMann?”

Excited at the woman’s interest,  he replied, “I sell only the finest men’s cologne.”

‘That’s what I smell’ thought Sue.

Opening his case, Purcival brought out a medium sized bottle.  Holding it gently in his hand, he carefully took off the cap.  Reaching over, he held it out to Sonja and Charity.

“This is our new aroma.  We always like to know what ladies think of our products.  Take a whiff of that!”

Sonja took the bottle and caught the scent.  Grimacing, she held it close to Charity, who politely took a smell and shook her head, “Interesting.”

Taking the bottle back, Purcival handed it to Sue for her opinion when the car lurched and a man fell into him.  The cologne spilled onto the front of Sue’s shirt and she jumped out of her seat.

“JUST GREAT!” she yelled as she brushed the offending cologne off the front of her shirt.

Purcival stammered, “I am so sorry Miss Weston.  Let me get that for you.”

Taking out his handkerchief, he reached towards the angry woman’s chest.  Grabbing the wrist of his hand, Sue growled, “Don’t even think about it!”

“Sorry, Miss Weston.” blushed Purcival.

Wrinkling her nose, Sue muttered, “This stuff smells like sh..”

“Suzanne!” exclaimed Charity cutting off her friend’s words as Sonja dabbed at the shirt.

“It was an accident, Miss Weston.  Please let me make it up to you.  I really must do something.”

“You’ve done quite enough, Mr. McMann.” stated Sue sitting back down.  Turning her head to the window and trying to ignore the smell coming from her shirt, she mumbled, “I knew I should’ve brought my gun. Maybe I can buy one when I get there.”

Hearing the mumbled words, Purcival busied himself with a book the rest of the trip.

Chapter 47

Jarrod watched in puzzlement at the people disembarking from the train.  Waving their hands in front of their faces and making comments regarding ‘fresh air at last’.  Seeing Sonja and Charity, Jarrod waved and headed over.

“Hi there!” smiled Jarrod as he kissed the cheek of each woman.  Looking around, he smiled at Charity, “Where’s Sue?”

Giggling, Charity pointed towards the car as an obnoxious order reached them.  Jumping down from the stairs, Sue glared when Jarrod grimaced and held her at arm’s length.

“Nice to see you again, Sue.” replied Jarrod as he quickly gave her a kiss on the cheek and stepped back.  “What happened?”

“Miss Weston, I must say again how truly sorry I am.” blustered Purcival as he hurried away.

Pointing at the back of the retreating man, Sue groaned, “He spilled his men’s finest cologne stuff all over me!  I would’ve shot him but Charity wouldn’t let me bring my gun!”

Jarrod laughed, “I’ll take you over to the house and you can get cleaned up.  Dinner is my treat tonight and we are going to the finest restaurant in San Francisco, ladies!”

Walking to the carriages, Jarrod winked at Charity and Sonja.  “Sue, could you walk downwind?”

“Very funny, Jarrod!” smirked Sue at the twinkling blue eyes.  “Maybe I’ll get you some of this stuff for your birthday!”

Chuckling, Jarrod helped the ladies in and drove them to the house.

After a full day of sightseeing and shopping, they arrived back at Jarrod’s home to change for dinner.  The women headed to the parlor while Jarrod poured drinks and listened to them approaching.

“Really, Suzanne!  I can’t believe you did that!” sighed Charity.

“Officer O’Malley didn’t have a problem with it.” smiled Sue.

Handing them each a sherry, Jarrod asked curiously, “Do you need a lawyer, Sue?”

Sue rolled her eyes, “I do not need the services of an attorney.  It was no big deal!”

Sonja shook her head and explained, “There was this man who grabbed a woman’s handbag.  She was screaming and he was running down the street towards us.”

“You tripped him as he went by?” suggested Jarrod.

Sue started laughing and Charity stomped her foot.  “It is not funny, Suzanne!”

“Well, I know you didn’t shoot him cause you left your gun in Stockton.” surmised Jarrod aloud making Sue laugh harder.  “So, what did you do?”

Sonja grinned at Sue who was wiping the tears from her eyes, “Jarrod, she grabbed this rope off a street vendor, lassoed and hog-tied him!  The man was cursing at her, so Sue sat on him.  It’s hard to curse at someone when you’re trying to breathe.  Then the police came.”

“He shouldn’t be stealing like that!” said Sue with a smile as she smoothed the skirt of her dress.  "He should get a real job!”

“Suzanne, that was the policemen’s job.  They could have caught him.” groaned Charity.

Jarrod winked at Sue, “It doesn’t sound like anyone got hurt.  What did the police say?”

“O’Malley said ‘Since you hog-tied this critter, do you wanna brand him too?’  Boy howdy, I was real tempted Jarrod.”  replied Sue seriously as the other two women shook their heads.

Jarrod smiled at the merriment flashing in the green eyes, “And you thought you weren’t going to have any fun in the big city!”

Chapter 48

The next morning, Sue sat on the porch steps, watching the sunrise and drinking coffee when Jarrod sat down beside her.

“You do realize the other ladies are not planning to rise until eight, don’t you?” asked Jarrod.

Chuckling, Sue nodded, “Sorry if I woke you, Jarrod.”

“You didn’t wake me.  Contrary to what Nick may think, I have been known to get up early.” teased Jarrod.

“I’ve been getting up early all my life and can’t seem to sleep late.  Unless I’m unconscious or on laudanum.  That was a nice dinner last night, Jarrod.  Well, except for those snails and our neighbor at the next table.” shivered Sue.

“Escargot is an acquired taste and I noticed your salesman was enjoying them.”

“I must have the worst luck!  There must be a hundred, maybe a thousand restaurants in a city this size and he had to choose that one to dine in.” groaned Sue.

“He did turn a little green around the gills when he saw you.” smirked Jarrod.

Shaking her head, she smiled, “I have that effect on people.  It’s a gift.”

Laughing, Jarrod rose and came back with the coffee pot.  As he poured a refill, he asked, “What are your plans today?”

“Charity and Sonja are going to look at some more women’s clothing stores.  I get to escape and check out the leather and  gun shops.  Officer O’Malley told me of a couple of good ones yesterday.”

“I’m sure you’ll have a good time doing that and be all ready for the opera tonight.”

Rolling her eyes, Sue frowned,  “Jarrod, do you like the opera, honestly?”

“Yes, I do like the opera.  I think you either like it or you don’t.” smiled Jarrod.  “Why?”

Looking around to ensure they were alone, Sue whispered, “I’ve been to one and I hated it!  I think those things are an acquired taste just like snails.”

“Then why are you going?” whispered Jarrod.

“Because Charity’s heart is set on it and I couldn’t do that to her.  This is a special trip for her and I wouldn’t want to ruin it.” sighed Sue.  “Besides, her and Sonja are just chomping at the bit for me to wear another dress.”

“I guess you’re stuck then.” snickered Jarrod.

“Hey, maybe my luck will turn!   I could get run over by a horse, break a leg or fall down and hurt myself.” replied Sue with a hopeful look  that made Jarrod chuckle.

Chapter 49

Sitting at a table in the outside café, Sue watched the people walk by as she enjoyed her coffee and waited for Jarrod to arrive.

“Tis you again, lass.” stated Officer O’Malley as he approached the table.

Standing, Sue shook hands with the officer.  “Officer O’Malley, nice to see you.  Care to join me for a coffee?  I’m just  waiting on someone.”

“Don’t mind if I do.” replied O’Malley as he sat across from Sue who had signaled the waiter.

“Did you hog-tie anyone today?” teased Sue.

“No, that tis your job, not mine.” laughed O’Malley as he sipped his coffee.  “Lass, did you check out the shops I spoke about yesterday?”

“I did that this morning.  You were right about them.  They had some quality merchandise and pretty reasonable, too.”  smiled Sue.  “Thanks for letting me know.   I’m having some things sent to the ranch.”

“Did you be saying your ranch was in Stockton?”

“It is.  Do you know anyone from there?  Other than me?”

Chuckling, O’Malley nodded, “I know Danny Baldwin.  He’s a lawyer, I hear now.”

“I know Dan.  He’s a fine lawyer and a good friend.” smiled Sue.  “So, tell me O’Malley, how was Danny when he was growing up?”

“Lass, he was not bad, but not good either.”

Green eyes lighting up in anticipation, Sue leaned forward and whispered, “O’Malley, you gotta tell me about my attorney’s misspent youth.”

Jarrod hurried to the café, his meeting running late caused him to be forty minutes behind in schedule.  Seeing Sue at a table, he heard her laughter as he walked up.

“Sue, sorry I’m late.” smiled Jarrod turning to the man and shaking his hand.  “Officer O’Malley, nice to see you again.”

“Mr. Barkley, tis good to see you.  I’d best be getting back to me beat.  Lass, if you ever come back, you be sure to stop over to the station and say hi.” smiled O’Malley.

“I will and thanks again.” grinned Sue as she winked.  Laughing, O’Malley walked down the street.

“I’m glad to see you had someone to keep you company.” smiled Jarrod as they walked down the street.

“He was just telling me how he knew Dan Baldwin.”

Watching the laughter in the green eyes, Jarrod smirked, “Whatever it was, I don’t think Dan’s gonna like you knowing from that look in your eyes.”

“Nope, I don’t think so!” laughed Sue as she climbed in the carriage.  “It does make up for having to go to the Opera tonight, though.”

Picking up Charity and Sonja, the four made their way back to the home of Jarrod to have dinner and ready themselves for the opera.  Pouring himself a drink, Jarrod heard a knock at the door.

“Telegram for Miss Suzanne Weston.” stated the boy as the door opened.

“I’ll give it to her.  Thank you.” said Jarrod handing him a tip.

Walking into the kitchen, he handed Sue the telegram and watched the green eyes well with tears.

“Sue?” asked Jarrod softly.

Wiping her eyes, she whispered, “I, uh, I gotta get to Texas, Jarrod.”

Holding her by the shoulders, Jarrod asked quietly  “What’s happened, Sue?”

“An old friend was murdered.  I gotta pack and catch the next train.”

“I’m sorry, Sue.”  said Jarrod as he gave her a hug.  “I’ll hitch up the carriage and drive you to the depot.”

A hand on his sleeve stopped him as he turned to leave.

“Jarrod.  I’m gonna need a gun.”

Chapter 50

Jarrod said quietly, “I’ve an extra gun and belt.”

“I bought a new belt today.  I only need the gun.” said Sue walking beside him into the living room.  “Thanks, Jarrod.”

“You can borrow anything you want, but, do you wanna tell me why?”

“Self protection.” replied Sue climbing the stairs to the guest room.

Pausing outside the room she was sharing with Charity, Sue took a deep breath and opened the door.

“Charity, I have to go to Texas.  Nathan’s been murdered.” explained Sue softly handing her the telegram and began quickly packing her bag.

“Suzanne, I’m so sorry.  Do you want me to go with you?” asked Charity wiping the tears that had begun to fall after reading the wire.

“No.  You and Sonja stay here.  Jarrod’s gonna drive me to the train station.”

Opening a package, Sue took out the new gunbelt and strapped it on.   Sonja came in as she was finishing.

“Where are you going, Sue?  Why’s Charity crying?”

Charity shook her head, “Sue’s gotta go to Texas.  Her uncle’s been murdered.”

“Oh, I’m so sorry!”

“Thanks!” replied Sue softly as she put the last of the items in her bag.

“I thought you didn’t have any relatives, Sue?” puzzled Sonja.

“He’s my adopted uncle.  Nathan is, uh, was a very good friend of my father’s.” replied Sue softly taking a deep breath to squelch the tears that were threatening to spill over.

Closing the bag, she hugged each of the women.  “If I have time, I’ll wire the ranch before I get on the train.  I’m sorry for running out on you.”

Hugging Sue again, Charity whispered, “Be careful.”

Putting on her hat, Sue smiled and squeezed her hand, “I’ll be fine.”

The women followed her out of the room and down the stairs where Jarrod handed Sue a gun and a box of shells.  Checking the loads, Sue put the pistol in her belt and filled up the loops with bullets.

Taking her bag, Jarrod carried it out and put it in the carriage with Charity and Sonja watching as they drove away.

“Charity, why is she taking a gun?” asked Sonja.

Closing the door and locking it, Charity poured them a sherry.  “Here’s the wire.”

Suzanne Weston

140 Nob Hill

San Francisco, CA

Wire received from Dan Freely

Nathan Mathis murdered

Varner escaped may be responsible

Will send Jack to Texas upon return

Bill

Reading the wire, Sonja looked at Charity, “Who’s Varner?”

Handing Sonja the drink, Charity sat in a chair.  “I don’t know the whole story.  Suzanne wrote me a few years back and said Varner had shot Heath.  Suzanne tracked him down for the rangers and with her help, they were able to send him to prison.”

“What?  Sue could be in serious trouble if he’s the one responsible!” exclaimed Sonja.

Charity nodded and smiled slightly, “She’ll be fine and Jack’s gonna be there to make sure of it.”

Chapter 51

Jack, Heath and Nick bypassed the ranches and rode straight to the train station to meet the ladies that would be arriving in a few minutes.

Their return from the fishing trip had been delayed when Jack’s horse had panicked crossing a rushing river.  Jack had fallen off into the river and hit his head on a rock.   Racing down the banks of the river, Nick and Heath got ahead of him and were able to pull the unconscious man out.   Stopping the bleeding, they were relieved when he opened his eyes a short while later.

“I must be in hell.” groaned Jack holding his head with his hands as Heath and Nick looked at each other concerned that Jack may have a serious head wound.

“Why do you say that?” asked Heath softly.

Jack replied, “Only in hell would I wake up to nurses that look like you two.”

Heath grinned while Nick bellowed, “THAT’S WHAT WE GET FOR PULLING YOUR SORRY ASS OUT OF THE WATER!”

“Ouch, Nick!”  moaned Jack.  “I already got a headache!”

“Sorry.” said Nick sheepishly.  “Let’s see if you can stand.”

Holding onto him, the brothers helped Jack to his feet.  Walking on wobbly legs, they helped him to a tree and leaned him up against it.  Closing his eyes to fight the dizziness, Jack mumbled, “We better get going if we want to get back tonight.”

Heath snorted, “I don’t think you can ride, Jack.  We could wait til the morning and still get there in time for the train.”

“I think Heath’s right, Jack.” agreed Nick.  “Not that I wanted to spend another night eating my little brother’s sorry excuse for food, mind you.”

Heath sported a wounded look and growled, “Thanks for volunteering to cook tonight, big brother.”

“I DIDN’T VOLUNTEER..”

“Nick!” snarled Jack as the pounding increased.

“Sorry.  I’ll just go see about the horses.” stated Nick jumping up and walking away with spurs jingling.

Tying up the horses, they waited for the train that was coming up the tracks.   Sonja stepped off the train followed by Charity and were greeted warmed by Jack and Heath.

Looking around, Nick frowned and asked, “Where’s Sue?  Did she miss the train?”

“Suzanne’s on her way to Texas, Nick.  Jack, you better read this.” stated Charity as she handed him the wire.

“Damn!” growled Jack handing the wire to the brothers.

“Who’s this Varner?” inquired Nick watching the clenching of Heath’s jaw.

Heath said quietly, “Nick, I’m catching the next train to Texas.”

“Me, too” replied Jack as he turned too quickly and held onto Heath when the world started spinning.

“You’re not going anywhere but Dr. Merar’s.” stated Nick holding his other arm.  “Let’s get him down there.”

Heath and Nick helped Jack onto his horse.  Looking down, a pale Jack smiled at Charity, “Honey, you better go with Sonja.”

“I will.  We’ll drop off the bags and see you at the doctors.” stated Charity as she and Sonja left.

Dropping Jack off at Dr. Merar’s house, Nick followed Heath outside.

“Heath, wait a minute!”

“Nick!” stated Heath brusquely.

“I’m trying to tell you that I’m going with you, little brother.”  snapped Nick.  “First, let’s tell Mother and Duke what’s going on.  Then let Sue’s crew know about Jack.  The train’s not leaving until six.  We got plenty of time to do all that and for you to say goodbye to Sonja.”

“Okay.” smiled Heath gratefully.

“On the train you can tell me all about this Varner guy.”

“He’s a bad one, Nick.  Nathan Mathis was a good friend of Sue’s and like an uncle to her.  I don’t like Sue being there with Varner on the loose.” sighed Heath.

“She won’t be alone for long.  We’ll be there soon.” stated Nick firmly mounting Coco and riding down the street with Heath beside him.

Chapter 52

Stepping off the train, Sue was greeted with a blast of hot Texas air and carrying her bag, walked down the street to the hotel.   Sitting the bag on her bed, Sue took out a clean shirt and changed.   Pouring some water in the basin, she washed her face and hands.  Looking in the mirror, she dried her hands and stared at the strained face looking back.   Unable to rest on the train, she was running on nervous energy.   Sighing, Sue put on her hat and left the room.  Locking the door, she made her way to the restaurant.  Seeing Manuel talking to some customers, she caught his eye and gestured.

Excusing himself, Manuel shook hands with her and extended his sympathies.

“Thank you, Manuel.  Have you seen Captain Freely today?”

“Si, but not since breakfast.” stated Manuel.

“I’m going over to the Sheriff’s office.  If you see him, let him know I’m in town.” smiled Sue.

“I will, Miss Weston.”

Leaving the hotel, Sue walked to the livery and rented a horse.  Riding up the street, she dismounted in front of the sheriff’s office and went inside.

A middle aged Sheriff Tom Watkins sat at his desk looking through the latest flyers.  He had been sheriff of the town for the past ten years.  He was a fair man who could handle most trouble sent his way.    If he needed help, he knew he could count on the Texas Rangers.  They had worked together many times in the past and the relationship between the two law enforcement agencies was a benefit to the town and county.

Looking up, he smiled widely and jumping up from his desk, he hugged the woman, “Susie!”

“Tom, good to see you again.” replied Sue returning the hug.  Taking off her hat, she sat on the chair and accepted the coffee cup.

“Have you seen Dan yet?” inquired the sheriff taking in the exhaustion on the young woman’s face.

“No.  I just got in from San Francisco.  Manuel says he hasn’t seen him since breakfast.”

Putting the cup on the desk, Sue leaned forward to rest her elbows on her knees, took a shaky breath and asked softly, “What happened to Nathan?”

“Varner escaped two weeks ago from the penitentiary.  When the word came down, I let Dan and Nathan know.  Dan and the rangers went out looking for him, but couldn’t find him.  Then, three days ago when Nathan didn’t show up at his office, his secretary went to his house and found him.”

“Why do they think Varner did it?”

“He’d been beat to death and the newspaper clipping about Varner’s trial was laying on top of his body.  On it was written, one down four to go.”

Looking at the sheriff, Sue asked curiously, “One down, four to go?”

Leaning on the desk, Tom said quietly, “I think it means Dan Freely.   Heath Thomson.  Pete Samuels and you.”

Frowning, Sue inquired, “Where’s Petey now?”

“Susie, we can’t find him.  He’s disappeared.”

Jumping up, Sue shouted, “Disappeared?”

Chapter 53

Boarding the train, Nick and Heath sat apart from the rest of the passengers beside each other.  As the train pulled out from the station, Nick looked at his little brother and asked quietly, “Who’s Varner?”

Pushing his hat up from his forehead and taking a deep breath, he spoke quietly, “When I was working on Sue and her father’s ranch, we were having problems with rustlers.   One day, I was out riding fenceline with this kid Andy and we came up on Varner and one of his men real sudden like.”

Closing his eyes, Heath could see the incident as if it were yesterday.  Nick, reached over, squeezed his shoulder, “What happened?”

Tossing his big brother a shadow of a lopsided grin, Heath continued, “I got the man closest to me, but Andy went down with Varner’s first shot.   Then he hit me in the right shoulder.  While I was laying on the ground, he pumped two more into my back for good measure.  I would’ve died that day if it weren’t for Sue.”

“Sue found you?”

“Yeah.  Sue was riding out to help us check the fenceline and came up on us.  She plugged my wounds and got me up on Satan with her.  She took me to the nearest neighbor.   I was unconscious, but I could hear her ordering me to fight to live.  She kept saying, ‘You’re gonna live Heath.  Don’t make a liar out of me, Thomson!’  I probably would’ve checked out from the pain alone if it wasn’t for her voice.”

“After the doc came and took over, she sent the neighbor boy over to the ranch with a note about what happened.  She went back and covered Andy, then she took out following the trail of the rustler.  She didn’t know it was Varner, she was just following the trail of the man who had killed one of her hands and injured another.”

“She went alone?” frowned Nick.

Chuckling, Heath grinned, “Nick , ain’t you noticed by now she’s stubborn?”

“Alright!  I shouldn’t be surprised, but she’s gonna give me a few gray hairs.” smirked Nick.

“Since their ranch was so large, we could never find a recent trail to follow before.   She went alone and followed the trail until it was too dark to see. She made a cold camp and waited til morning.  By then, her father had the rangers going after her led by Dan Freely.  They caught up with her and she lead them to Varner and his gang.  There was shooting and Varner’s men were killed.  In the confusion, he tried to get to his horse, but Sue shot him in the leg and the rangers captured him.  To this day he has a limp in that leg.”

“So, he stood trial but why did he kill her friend?”

“Nathan was the judge that presided over the trial.  I was the main witness and Petey Samuels, the foreman of the jury.  Varner made threats against all of us, including Sue and Captain Freely, the day he was being dragged out of the courtroom.   He’s a vicious man, Nick.  He has no conscience about killing anyone and it looks like he’s trying to make good on his threats.” said Heath quietly.

Squeezing Heath’s shoulder, Nick growled, “We’ll be there soon, Heath and we won’t let her leave our sight for a minute.”

Nodding, Heath grinned, “Thanks for coming with me, Nick.  It’ll be easier to keep an eye on her if there’s two of us.”

“I’m gonna be busy keeping one eye on you, little brother and one on her.   Varner will have to come through me to get to you two.” stated Nick firmly as he pulled his hat over his eyes to catch some sleep before they arrived in Texas.

Feeling the rush of emotion wash over him from Nick’s protective words, Heath smiled and copied his big brother’s idea of getting some rest before they arrived.

Only Varner knew what the future would bring.

Chapter 54

Climbing down from the roan and leading him, Evan Varner limped to cave and entered.  Grabbing the lantern, he adjusted the flame after lighting the wick.  Taking the horse to the back of the cave, he kicked the trussed up man laying against the wall in the stomach and laughed cruelly at the grunt of pain he heard.  Sitting on a rock, he built up the fire and boiled water for coffee.

Pete Samuels glared at his kidnapper from his bruised face.  He was surprised he was still alive.  He didn’t have a chance when Varner surprised him at his homestead by hiding behind his door and hitting him over the head.  He knew Varner had escaped from his prison, but never thought he would come back to the area and carry out the threats he had made at the trial.  He had assumed the man would flee for parts unknown to avoid the long arm of the law.

Watching Varner closely, Pete kept working at the ropes that tied his hands behind his back.  The ropes had sliced into his wrists and he could feel the blood on his hands.  He kept stretching and pulling the ropes, hoping the slickness of the blood would allow him to slip his wrists free.  Once his hands were free, he could easily free his legs and slip away.

Varner poured a cup of coffee and spoke nonchalantly, “I hear Judge Mathis got hisself killed.”

Taking a sip, he watched Pete Samuels close his eyes as if in prayer.

“Praying ain’t gonna do him any good now.” laughed Varner, his black eyes piercing beneath his brows.  Limping over to Samuels, he grabbed his hair, yanking his head back.

“I also hear that maybe your old boss will be back in town today or tomorrow.  It’ll sure be nice to see her again!” smirked Varner at the widening of Samuel’s eyes and the noise he was making behind the gag in his mouth.

Throwing the head forward, Varner limped back to the fire and picked up his cup, “Don’t worry Samuels, you’ll see her soon enough.”

Chapter 55

Sue lay on the bed in her hotel room going over the events of the day in her mind.  The afternoon ride to Petey Samuels’ place had yielded no clues other than the blood on the floor by the door.  She had agreed with Tom’s suggestion that Varner had surprised Pete and probably knocked him out as he entered his home.   Tom watched patiently as Sue scoured the ground for tracks.  None were to be found as it had rained the night after Samuels had disappeared two days ago.

After arriving back in town, she stabled the horse and went to the office of the town attorney.  Nathan Mathis had been a bachelor all his life and had no living relatives.  He left most of his worldly possessions to Suzanne Weston, ‘the daughter he would have liked to have’, the will had stated.  The other part of his inheritance went to his secretary, Alice, who had worked with him for the majority of his career.

Walking down the boardwalk to the undertaker’s office, Sue had to fight the emotions running rampant through her.  Anger, defeat and sadness fought amongst themselves to break free from the barrier she kept them behind.  Reaching the office, she entered and took care of the details for the funeral that was to be held tomorrow.  The body of Nathan Mathis, disfigured from the brutal beating, was to be laid to rest in a closed casket.  The burial could wait no longer due to the Texas heat.

Returning to the hotel, she had bypassed the restaurant knowing she wouldn’t eat, opting for a bottle instead.  The desk clerk handed her a note from Manuel  stating Captain Freely would not be returning for two days.

Getting up from the bed, she poured herself another shot and drank it down in one swallow.  Shivering from the taste of the whiskey and coughing from the burning in her throat, she poured another and walked back to the bed putting the bottle on the bedside table.

Pouring another with tears welling, she gazed at the brown liquid in the glass and whispered, “I don’t know if I have the strength to say goodbye to someone else I care about.”

Drinking the shot, she laid her head back against the head board and smirked, “‘You can’t find courage in a bottle’, that’s what daddy would be saying to me now, if he were here.”

Feeling the effects of the alcohol on an empty stomach, the tears of anger ran down her cheeks.

Shattering the glass against the wall, she growled, “Petey.  Nathan.  I’m gonna kill that bastard!”

Alcohol had not affected the sense of caution within her, when she heard the knocking at the door and took out her pistol.  Swaying as she walked to the door, Sue flung it open and pointed her gun.

“WHAT IN THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?” shouted Nick angrily after she startled the beejeepers out of him.

“Nick!” slurred Sue lowering the pistol, “You’re lucky I didn’t shoot ya’!”

Taking the pistol from her hand, he pulled her into the room with him and shut the door.

“Sue, you’re drunk.” stated Nick sitting her on the bed and catching the smell of whiskey.

“Not drunk enough.” slurred Sue trying to focus her eyes on him.  “Stop movin’, Nick!”

Chuckling, Nick caressed her cheek.  “I’m not moving, honey.  I’m sitting in front of you.”

Gesturing wildly, she rambled not taking notice of his words, “Nathan’s gone and Petey’s missing.  I’m gonna kill that bastard when I find ‘em, Nick.”

“We’ll get Petey back.” said Nick gently.

Shaking her head, tears rolled down her cheeks and she stammered, “No.  No tracks.   No tracks.  My fault, I gave him a limp.  It’s my fault.”

Wrapping his arms around the distraught and intoxicated woman, Nick pulled her to his chest and spoke gently.  “Don’t cry honey.   We’ll find him.  Heath and I will find him.”

‘Heath and I?’ ran through Sue’s fogged mind.

“Heath’s here?” Pushing Nick away, she stumbled to her feet and held onto the bedpost as the room spun around.

“Yeah, he’s in the room.  We just got in on the train.” replied Nick confused.

“HE’S ON THE LIST NICK!”  shouted Sue as she yanked open the door and fell into the hallway.

Nick helped her up from the floor and held her by her arms, “What list, Sue?”

“Which room?” slurred Sue.

Hearing the commotion in the hallway, Heath opened the door and stepped out, “Nick, what’s wrong?”

Nick grinned slightly, “I’m not sure.  She’s talking about some list.”

Leaning against the wall with relief, Sue smiled and slurred, “Heath, I thought he got ya’”

“Who? Varner?” asked Heath looking into the alcohol glazed eyes.

Nodding, Sue slid down the wall and Nick caught her. “Come on darling, we’ll get you some nice hot coffee.”

Chapter 56

Glancing over, Sue reassured herself that Heath was still sitting at the table with the sheriff and then scowled when Nick poured another cup of coffee and placed it in front of her.

“Nick, no more coffee please.” said Sue feeling waterlogged.

Looking at the misery on the face across from him, Nick took the cup back and smiled,  “Next time, eat before you drink.”

Fighting the nausea in her stomach, Sue groaned, “If you know what’s good for you, don’t mention food again!”

“Sorry.” replied Nick taking her hand and holding it in his.  “Let’s get you upstairs so you can get some sleep.”

“Heath.” called Sue grimacing as her head protested the echo inside of it.

“Tom, I’ll see you in the morning.” grinned Heath.

Shaking his hand, the Sheriff smiled and nodded, “Watch yourself, Heath.”

“I will.” replied Heath.

Nick guided her to the stairs with Heath following.   Up the stairs, Nick and Heath waited outside the water closet for Sue to reappear.

“Nick, I can take care of myself.” whispered Heath.

Nick poked him with a finger in his chest and whispered angrily, “I promised her we’d all stay together!  If you think I’m gonna break that promise, you’re crazy!”

Rolling his eyes, Heath snorted, “Nick, I’m just gonna…”

Opening the door, Sue frowned at the brothers in front of her.   Nick’s posture denoted anger and Heath’s defiance.

Hearing the hushed conversation through the door, she stared into the blue eyes and stated, “Give me your word, Heath.”

Heath asked, “My word for what, Sue?”

“That you’ll stay with Nick and me.  I want your word.”

Knowing Heath would not break his word, Nick smiled widely and Heath glared at him.  Sighing, Heath said, “I give you my word.”

Squeezing his forearm, Sue replied, “Thanks, Heath.  I’ll feel better having you and Nick near.”

Taking Sue’s arm, Nick suggested, “Let’s get your blankets and pillows.  We’ll  stay in my room.”

Collecting the items, the three entered Nick’s room and locked the door.  Nick and Heath spread their blankets on the floor while Sue sat on the bed.

Heath lay on the blankets and closed his eyes, “Night.”

Sitting on the bed, Nick caressed her cheek and whispered, “Sue, you best get some sleep.”

Nodding, she lay down and Nick pulled the blanket over her.  Bending over, he kissed her tenderly.

“Nick, thanks for being here.” whispered Sue closing her eyes.

Staring at the ceiling,  Sue heard the even breathing of her roommates.  Ever since the telegram had arrived in San Francisco, sleep was slow in coming.   Her mind would run a marathon of thoughts through it, keeping sleep at bay.

Sitting up, she leaned against the headboard and sighed.  Going through her mind were questions.    Was Petey alive?  If he was alive, where would Varner have taken him?  How would he use the man he had taken against her?   Does he know I’m here?  Does he know Heath’s here?  Where is Varner hiding?

Swinging her socked feet over the edge of the bed, she carefully stepped over Nick and walked to the window.   Pulling the curtains to the side, she looked up at the moon.  Lowering herself in a chair by the window, she gazed at the man laying on the floor deep in sleep.  His features reflected his relaxed state of mind.  His dark hair falling over onto his forehead glistened in the moonlight.   Closing her eyes, she thought of his kisses before she got on the train with Charity and Sonja.  Remembering his passion caused her cheeks to burn.   Sue had to stifle the urge to lay beside him and enclose herself in his strong arms.

Somberly she remembered why she had arrived here.  Nathan’s funeral was tomorrow and she was thankful to have the brothers here to stand beside her.  Putting her arms on the table, she lay her head down as the tears silently fell remembering the gentleness of the man who was taken from this world so brutally.

‘Please give me the strength to make it through.’ she begged until sleep finally came.

Chapter 57

Miguel and Juan watched the man leaving the cave with his horse.  Although, they were to stay on the reservation, they would came to the mountains to hunt and fish.  The supply of food the Indians received from the government needed to be supplemented to last until the next shipment would arrive.

They had never seen this man before but he looked like the man the Texas Rangers had warned them about and he had one bad leg.  Talking amongst themselves, the two Yaquis teenagers argued.  If anyone knew they had left the reservation, the whole tribe would pay for their actions.  They knew that someone had to let the rangers know the man they sought was here.  Deciding they would seek the advise of the padre at the mission, Miguel turned to leave when Juan grabbed his arm and pointed.  Watching, a man stumbled out of the cave and fell to the ground.   Unable to rise, the man started crawling slowly away from the cave stopping after only a few feet.

Running towards him, Miguel and Juan grabbed his arms and carried him away into the underbrush.  Satisfied they were far enough away, they lowered him to the ground.

Petey Samuels had waited until Varner rode away.  The days of working on the ropes had finally allowed his hands to slip through the hold they had on him.  Varner’s knowledge of Suzanne Weston’s arrival was the item that was foremost in his mind.   His planning of how to get her and reek his revenge became his only thought and he neglected to check the bindings on his prisoner.

Stumbling on legs that were numb and cramped, he made his way out of the cave.  Falling to the ground, he gasped as the pain shot through him.  Dehydration, blood loss from the beatings and the knife that Varner cruelly thrust into him last night had weakened him dramatically.

Unable to gather the strength to rise and run, he started crawling slowly from the place he was sure he would be left to die in.  Jarring his already broken ribs and sending a shockwave of pain through his body, he lost his battle to stay conscious.  The blackness surrounded him and he was unaware of his two young rescuers that carried him further away.

Miguel and Juan observed the man’s beaten face and body.  Opening his shirt, they located a knife wound responsible for the large amount of blood on the front of his clothes.  Ripping the bottom half of his shirt, Juan folded it and placed it over the wound.

“We take him to the padre.” stated Miguel as Juan nodded in agreement. Carrying the man between them, they made their way back to their horses.

Father Martinez watched the riders approaching the mission.  Seeing the Yaqui teenagers, he walked out to meet them and was shocked at the man in front of Miguel.

Juan and the padre relieved Miguel of his burden.  Lowering the man to the ground, Father Martinez spoke, “The rangers have been looking for this man for three days.  They thought he was dead.”

“Other man leave cave and we bring him here.” replied Juan.

Pete Samuels opened his eyes and moaned in pain as the sun assault him.  Shading the man’s eyes, Father Martinez said softly, “You’re gonna be okay Mr. Samuels.”

Looking at the man in the robe, Pete grabbed his arm and whispered frantically, “Father, don’t worry about me.  We gotta warn Sue Weston.  He’s on his way to town to get her.”

Miguel and Juan looked at each other in surprise.  The Yaqui tribe had been thankful for the gift she had given them.   They knew of her love for her Yaqui guardian and the land she lived on.   The land they received had supplied them with a bountiful harvest of corn.  They knew she no longer lived here but in another place called California.

Kneeling, Juan looked in the padre’s eyes,  “We go warn her.”

Putting his hand on Juan’s arm, the Father shook his head, “No.  You can’t be seen in town.  I’ll go and warn her.  Take him into the mission.  I’ll have the sisters hide him and care for him until the doctor arrives.”

The two stood Pete Samuels between them and carried him into the mission.  Father Martinez explained to the sisters who hurried to gather the items they needed.  Going out to the barn, he saddled one of the horses Miss Weston had given the mission.  Climbing into the saddle, he galloped towards town.

Chapter 58

In the early morning light, Dan Freely stood across the grave and paid his respects to the judge he was proud to call friend.  Searching for two days, the rangers had not located Varner or the body of Pete Samuels, who they felt was dead.  He had arrived back in town as the mourners approached the grave for the start of the funeral.

Glancing over under the brim of his hat, he studied the man who stood beside her.   He had watched as the man walked to the grave beside her and held her elbow.  Bending over, he had whispered in her ear and Sue had squeezed his hand in response.  Heath stood on the other side of her and nodded a greeting when Dan appeared.

The paleness of her face caused Dan’s heart to twist at the pain she was going through.  His love for her shined in his eyes as he looked up and into the hazel eyes of the dark haired man beside her.  The priest completed the service and Dan watched as Sue laid a flower on the casket and placed a kiss on it.

Walking away from the grave, Nick stayed by her side until she stopped under a tree on the other side of the graveyard away from the others.  She took a deep breath and looked into the gentle hazel eyes.

“You would have liked Nathan.  He was a decent and caring man.” said Sue softly and fighting the tears that wanted to escape.

Caressing her cheek, Nick saw the tears welling and drew her into his arms.  Comforting her and stroking her hair, he whispered, “It’s okay to cry and let it all out.  I’m here for you.”

Tightening her arms around him, Sue let the river of tears escape and start to purge the grief out of her soul.  Clinging to Nick, she wiped her tears when they subsided.

Holding her, he looked into the emerald eyes and said softly,  “I think there’s a  Texas Ranger waiting to speak to you, honey.”

Standing on her tiptoes, she kissed him tenderly, “Thanks again, Nick for being here.”

Taking her hand, he walked beside her and stated firmly.  “I love you and beside you is where I’m gonna stay.”

Evan Varner’s heart jumped for glee when he saw the three people at the graveside service that he had waited four years to seek vengeance on.  The funeral had seemed to drag on.  He watched intently as Sue Weston and the tall man walked away from the others at the funeral.  Reaching a tree, they had stopped and the man was obviously comforting the woman who was crying.  When she kissed the man, Varner grinned evilly and thought, ‘interesting.’   The couple walked back to the others and stood in conversation with Heath and Dan Freely.

Chapter 59

Dan watched as Sue and the man walked away from the graveside together.   Keeping an eye on her, he saw the man comforting Sue and the kiss he received from her.   Regret and sadness filled his being and he sighed deeply.  Heath heard the deep exhale and followed Dan’s eyes to the couple.

Heath explained softly, “He’s my brother.  He’s a good man, Dan.”

“If she’s happy, that’s all that matters.” replied Dan.  “It’s good to see you again, Heath.”

“You too, Dan.  Although I wish it were under different circumstances.”

Looking at Heath, Dan smiled slightly, “Yeah.  So do I.”

The two men stood waiting as the couple headed back towards them.  Stopping in front of Dan, Sue returned his hug and smile, “Dan, this is Nick Barkley, Heath’s brother.  Nick, this is Captain Dan Freely of the Texas Rangers.  Dan’s an old friend of mine.”

“Nice to meet you Nick.” said Dan extending his hand.

Taking the extended hand, Nick replied, “You too, Captain Freely.”

“Did you find Petey?” asked Sue.

Shaking his head, Dan frowned, “I’m sorry, Sue.  We haven’t found any sign of Varner or Pete.”

Looking to the horizon, Sue nodded, “I was thinking last night and came up with a list of possibilities of where Varner could be hiding, Dan.  How about if I run them by you and we compare with where you have searched so far?”

Heath nodded, “Sounds like a good place to start.”

“Yeah, sounds good to me.   Let’s do it over coffee.” suggested Nick.

Agreeing the four headed to the restaurant and sat at a table occupied by Sheriff Watkins.  Running through the sights Sue had come up with, Dan was able to clear five of the possibilities.

“The mountains are too large to search thoroughly.  There’s too many ways in and out.” stated Dan.

Nick frowned and then asked, “Is there an old-timer that may have trapped in the mountains when he was younger?”

Tom smiled, “Harry Frost.  He’s around eighty and he’s been here for a long time.  Maybe he’d have some ideas.”

“Tom, why don’t you ask him what he thinks?” asked Sue watching the sheriff hurry off to find the old man.

Dan stood up and put his hat on, “Sorry, but I have to get back to headquarters and catch up with what’s been happening the last few days.  Let me know what Tom finds out.”

“Okay, Dan.  We’re gonna take a ride out to the mission this morning.” smiled Sue.

“Be careful.  There’s no telling what Varner will do.” stated Dan firmly before he left.

“I need to wire the ranch before we leave for the mission and let Jack know we’re okay.” said Sue drinking the last of her coffee.

After taking care of the wires and obtaining horses from the livery, the three rode out of town towards the former ranch.   Nick listening intently while Sue relayed the history of the former ranch to him.

“Dad came out here when he was only eighteen.  He saw this area of Texas and fell in love with it.  For a while he was the only white man here.  He built a small cabin and fortified it against attack.  He even had an escape tunnel.  He knew this land with its water supply would be more bountiful than a mine of gold.  The people back east needed beef to feed them and furs for their clothes.  He planned on giving them both and making his fortune.  His first hand was Pedro’s great uncle who had barely escaped the wrath of an angry husband in Mexico.  Dad found him and brought him back to the cabin.  He worked and fought with dad by his side until his death.  He’s buried in the family plot.  When Dad went east one time be came back with mom.  By this time, he had a full crew that would work and fight when needed.   I came along 10 months later but childbirth and this life was too much for her.  He buried her and raised me.  That is essentially how the Weston Ranch came to be.”

Seeing a cloud of dust coming towards them, they reined in and waited for the rider to get closer.

“It’s Father Martinez.” said Sue kicking the horse into a gallop to meet the rider with the brothers following.

Recognizing the woman coming to him, Father Martinez pulled his horse to a stop.  “Miss Weston!  Mr. Samuels is at the mission and he’s badly hurt.”

“Petey Samuels?” asked Sue in surprise.

“Si.  Miguel and Juan found him in the mountains and brought him to me.  He needs a doctor.” exclaimed the padre.

“Sue, I’ll go back to town and get the doctor.  You and Heath go with the father.” replied Nick.

“Nick, I think we should stay together.” said Sue worry reflecting in her emerald eyes.

Nick grinned, “I’ll be okay.  Varner doesn’t know me so you don’t have to worry.”

“He’s right Sue.” agreed Heath softly.  “The doc’s office is by the sheriff’s office.  Let Tom know about Pete when you get to town and he can let Dan know.  The doc can show you where the mission is.”

“Okay, I’ll bring him back in a hurry.” replied Nick turning his horse and riding back to where they came.

Sue looked at Heath, “I still don’t like it, but lets go see Petey.”

Riding fast, the three arrived at the mission and went inside.  Father Martinez lead them down a hallway to a back room and opened the door.  Walking over to the bed, Sue grinned at the brown eyes peering from the battered face.

Taking his hand, she said softly, “Petey, you’d do anything to get out of work.”

“Hi boss.” whispered Pete.  “Heath, didn’t expect to see you.”

Looking over Sue’s shoulder, Heath grinned, “None of us were expecting to see you alive, Pete.”

Coughing slightly and moaning from the pain, Pete nodded, “Damn lucky, I’d say.”

Checking his knife wound, Sue frowned, “The doctor’ll be here soon.  You get some rest.”

Looking at his former boss, Pete smiled, “I was worried he was gonna grab ya’ at Nathan’s funeral.”

“What?” exclaimed Sue feeling a shiver of fear run down her spine.  “What are you talking about, Petey?”

Pete saw the surprise and fear on his friends’ face, “Varner.  He said he was gonna see you at the funeral.”

“Nick!” shouted Sue running from the room and out to the horses with Heath on her heels.

Jumping in the saddles, they galloped back the way they came.  Fear caressing their souls, the two hoping the man they loved had made it back to town without meeting the vengeance seeker.

Dan Freely and Tom Watkins watched the two riders galloping down the street and stop in front of them.

“Is Nick here?” shouted Heath.

Puzzled, Dan shook his head, “I haven’t seen him.  Why?”

“No!” cried Sue in anguish.  Turning her horse, she rode back down the road towards the mission.

“It’s Varner!  Come on!” called Heath following Sue while Tom and Dan ran to their horses.

Heath’s breath caught in his throat at the sight of Sue kneeling on the side of the road holding a black hat.  Jumping down, he ran over to her.

Looking up at Heath, the tears streamed down her face and loss reflected in her stunned emerald eyes, while a frightened whisper escaped her lips, “Nick.”

Chapter 60

Sighting his rifle at the man who stood by Sue Weston’s side, Varner slowly let out his breath and pulled the trigger.   Nick felt the burning in his right shoulder before he heard the report of the rifle.  Falling to the ground, his head grazed the side of a rock and he lay stunned on the side of the road.  The pain radiated through his upper body and head.  Sensing someone approaching, he fumbled for his gun with his injured arm.

Varner yanked back the right arm of the man and laughed at the outcry of pain.  Taking the gun from its holster, he turned the man onto his back.

Looking into the brown pain filled eyes, Varner asked, “What’s your name, boy?”

Nick held onto his shoulder and asked through clenched teeth, “You want conversation before you rob me?”

Laughing at the man’s insolence, Varner grinned, “If I wanted to rob ya’, you’d be dead.  Now, what’s your name?”

“Nick.  Nick Barkley.”  was the pain-filled reply.

“Nick Barkley, how do ya’ know Sue Weston and Heath Thomson?” asked Varner curiously.

“That’s none of your damn business, mister?” retorted Nick glaring at the stranger.

“Evan Varner’s the name.” were the words Nick heard before darkness came preceded by a fist.

Tying the unconscious man’s hands, Varner caught his horse and tied Nick to the saddlehorn.  Mounting, Varner held onto the reins and left the area.  Leaving a clear trail, he headed into the mountains.

Riding up a game trail, Varner turned into a stream and rode upstream for two miles before taking the horses up the bank.  Continuing on for five miles, he glanced back and saw Nick watching him.

Stopping, he spoke quietly, “Bet you’re wondering what I’m doing, Nick.”

Squinting from the pain in his head, Nick growled, “I could care less, Varner.”

“Well, I’m leaving a trail for her to follow.  She’s one of the best trackers I’ve ever seen.” smirked Varner.

“If you wanna turn yourself in, why don’t you just ride to the sheriff’s office?” puzzled Nick.

Laughing at Nick’s statement, Varner slapped him on the back and Nick grimaced from the shooting pain in his shoulder.

“I’m not turning myself in!  I’m gonna torture her for a while by making her wonder if she’s gonna find you.  When I saw you two together at the funeral, I could tell you were real important to her.”

Anger flared through Nick and he growled, “You bastard!  Why don’t you just kill me and get it over with?”

“Because Nick, I can see the love in your eyes for her.”  replied Varner his eyes lighting up with evil.  “To find you, she has to track me.  Everytime she loses the trail and has to work to find it, this will cause her more suffering than your quick death.  Too bad though.  You two won’t get to live happily ever after, at the end of this trail.”

Laughing in delight at his plan, Varner continued leading Nick up the mountain trail.   Nick felt the despair grip his soul.   Varner was right.   Sue would track the two men while agonizing over Nick’s welfare.    He tried to ignore the pain flaring in his body and think of a way to get out of this mess.

Chapter 61

Dan and Tom jumped down and ran over to the two stunned people on the side of the road.  Holding Nick’s hat, Sue walked to her horse, hung it from the saddlehorn and leaned against the side of the horse.

Putting his hands on her shaking shoulders, Heath said quietly, “Sue, let’s go get Nick back.”

Looking at Heath’s pale face, Sue wiped her eyes and nodded, “Okay.”

Taking the rifle from the scabbard on Tom’s saddle, she stated quietly,  “I gotta borrow your rifle, Tom.  Do you have more bullets?”

Dan put his hand on her shoulder and looked into the green eyes, “Sue, let me get some more men and then we’ll go after them.”

Pulling herself out of his grip, Sue said, “The doctor is needed at the mission.  Petey Samuels is there and he’s hurt.  Nick was on his way to get the doc when Varner got him.”

Opening his saddlebag, Tom handed her a box of cartridges.  “I’ll bring the doc out to the mission and meet you later.  I’ll swing by ranger headquarters and let them know what’s going on.”

“Thanks, Tom!” replied Dan as the sheriff rode away.

Looking at Sue kneeling and studying the ground, he said quietly,  “Sue, we need to know where Varner is going, to get Nick back.”

“Varner is telling us where he’s going.” said Sue softly.  “Heath!”

Rushing over Heath knelt beside her.  Touching the ground, she held up her fingers for him to see, “Blood.  Two places.  Looks like he hit his head on this rock and there’s more further down.  Could be a shoulder wound.”

“That would explain how he was able to get Nick.” replied Heath watching the green eyes blaze with fury.

Clenching the rifle in her hands, she nodded.  “Yeah.  It’s gonna be harder to get Nick away from Varner if he’s hurt bad.”

“If we get more rangers, we could split up and search a bigger area.” stated Dan.

“I’m not waiting for more men.”

“Me either, Dan.” stated Heath firmly walking beside Sue while she searched the ground.

“You don’t even know if he’s alive!  Varner could’ve killed Nick and is using his dead body as bait.” snapped Dan angrily.

Sue grabbed Heath’s arm as he lunged at Dan.  Heath’s body shook with anger at Dan’s words and he shouted, “What’s wrong with you!  My brother is out there and he’s hurt!  I know he’s alive!”

Sue stared at the ranger she called friend in disbelief.  “Nick is alive and we’re going after him.  Come on, Heath!”

Pulling Heath by the arm, they brushed past Dan and grabbed the reins of the horses.  Leading them, the two friends took off following the trail Varner had clearly left.

Chapter 62

“What’s wrong with you!  My brother is out there and he’s hurt!  I know he’s alive!”

Heath’s words resonated through his mind.  Sue’s look of disbelief and hurt had seared his eyes.  Dan hung his head in shame at the pain he had caused his friends.  Jealousy, the green eyed monster, was a powerful and devastating emotion.   Rubbing his horse’s neck, he could’ve sworn he saw shame in the eyes that rolled at him and in the shake of his head that said ‘what were you thinking’.

Looking to the heavens, he spoke out loud to himself, “God, what have I done?  Am I really just hoping Nick’s dead so she’ll turn to me.”

Realizing his angry words were spurned by the love that burned inside him, his shame escalated.  Mounting his horse, he galloped after the two friends he had hurt deeply.

‘Please forgive me.’ begged Dan silently following the tracks leading up the trail.

Stopping in a grove of trees in front of the cave, Varner dropped the reins of Nick’s horse and took out his gun.  Pulling his horse to the side of Nick, the glazed hazel eyes watched him with trepidation.

“This is the end of the trail.” stated Varner calmly bringing the pistol down on the back of Nick’s head.  Feeling the sudden onslaught of pain, darkness caved in all around Nick and he slumped forward in the saddle.

Tying the horses to a tree, Varner cut the ropes that tied the boots into the saddle.  Reaching up, he cut the bindings on the saddlehorn and pushed Nick off the side of the horse.  Grabbing the unconscious man under the arms, he dragged him to a tree, tied his hands behind the tree and stood back to study his handiwork.    Pulling up Nick’s head by the hair, Varner studied the handsome face and decided there were not enough bruises for his purpose.

Letting the head fall forward onto his chest, Varner said to the trees, “First things first.”

Entering the cave, he stopped abruptly and searched for the man he had left.  Picking up the ropes that had bound him, Varner threw them down in disgust.

“Well, I don’t need him now anyway.” he stated as he built up the fire.

Chapter 63

Heath watched as Sue ran her hand through her hair in frustration.

“Dammit!” she shouted to the sky and clenched the rifle in her hand.

Standing beside her, Heath squeezed her arm and spoke firmly, “You’re doing what Varner wants, Sue.  You’ve gotta stay calm.  We’re Nick’s only chance.”

Sue patted his hand and turned to look into the worried eyes, “I know, but I can’t help it.  Every time I lose the trail, I’m scared to death I’ll never find it again.”

“Don’t think like that!  You can’t let Varner beat you down this way.” exclaimed Heath.

“Heath, I can’t lose Nick.  If I can’t get him back, I’m not coming back either.” whispered Sue watching the shock  of her words widen his blue eyes.

“That’s not gonna happen.” stated Dan walking up behind the two and startling them.

Anger flared in their eyes and Heath retorted, “What are you doing here?”

Dan held up his hands and said quietly, “I’m sorry doesn’t make up for what I’ve done and said.   I let my feelings get in the way and cloud my judgment.  I want to help get Nick back.  Please let me help.”

The sincerity in his voice rang clear to the two friends who glanced at each other.  Squeezing Heath’s hand and nodding, Sue knelt and studied the ground, “Don’t bother me, I’ve got work to do.”

Heath flashed a small lop-sided grin to Dan and nodded.  “We just lost the tracks again.  It took us a while to find the trail again after Varner entered the stream.”

“Maybe he’s taken Nick to the same place he had Samuels.” suggested Dan.  “Did Samuels say where that was?”

Glancing up, Sue’s face was thoughtful.  “Father Martinez said Petey was held in a cave in the mountains.  There’s some caves over the next ridge.”

“Are those the only caves in this area?” inquired Heath.

Standing, Sue shrugged, “I don’t know.  I was only in this area one time with Haavi.  That was a long time ago.”

Dan nodded, “Then we can’t take the chance of heading to those caves.  We could miss them.”

“Yeah, you’re right Dan.  We have to follow the trail that Varner left.” sighed Heath.

Studying the ground again, Sue cursed with anger, “That Varner’s a conniving bastard.  Look at this!”

Dan and Heath moved closer looking at the thread she held in her fingers.  Heath took it and examined it.

“Burlap?” asked Dan with a puzzled look.

“You sure this is from Varner, Sue?” asked Heath matching the ranger’s look of puzzlement.

Grabbing the thread back, she snapped at the two men, “Yes, I’m sure!  He’s tied it around the horses’ hooves.  The ground’s hard and with burlap on the hooves they won’t leave tracks.  That’s why the tracks stop suddenly.”

Heath thought on her words and frowned, “If they don’t leave tracks, how are we supposed to find Nick?”

“If we follow this path, maybe we’ll come up on some tracks further on.” said Dan.

“Dan, do you still carry that bowie knife?” asked Sue studying the ground further up the trail.

“It’s in my saddlebag, why?”

“Can you get it for me?”

Dan walked to his horse and took out the knife.  Handing it to her, the men watched as she took off her vest and inserted the knife into the sheath sewn in her vest.

“Sue, what are you thinking?” inquired Heath.

Putting her vest back on, Sue looked up towards the ridge.  “Heath, I don’t think he wants us to find him or he wouldn’t have used the burlap.  I think Varner means to find us.”

“You think Nick’s dead?” whispered Heath.

Grabbing his face, Sue stared into the anguished eyes and spoke firmly,  “No!  Heath, he’s not dead!  He wouldn’t be any use to Varner if he were dead.  I think Varner somehow plans to take one of us to Nick.”

Dan rubbed his neck and stated “Then why the trail?”

Looking into the ranger’s blue eyes, she smiled slightly, “According to Petey, Varner was going to watch the funeral.   That’s how he knows Nick’s important to me.   He must’ve been following us from a distance when we were going out to the mission.  Then when Nick was on his way back to town for the doc, he took the opportunity to grab him.  The trail is his way of forcing me to trail Nick in order to save him.  He’s probably been laughing all afternoon knowing I was torturing myself each time I lost the trail.  Varner will assume Dan will be with us, but he doesn’t know Nick is your brother.  If he did, that would make it worse for Nick.”

Heath nodded, “Makes sense except for one thing.”

“What one thing?” frowned Dan.

Looking into Heath’s eyes, Sue said quietly, “What he has planned for getting one of us alone.  He could shoot one of us, but the other would take cover before he’d get lined up for the next shot.  I’d bet my ranch that he already has something in mind.”

“Yep and the day’s almost gone.” replied Heath causing the three of them to look at the setting sun and the darkening shadows that were falling on the land.

Chapter 64

Slowly making his way to the light that was at the end of the tunnel, Nick’s eyes moved under their lids.  Moaning from the pain shooting in his head, he cautiously shook his head to clear the cobwebs.  Awareness came rushing back when he tried to move his hand to wipe the fogginess from his eyes.

Gingerly opening his eyes, he glanced around the area.  He sent a prayer upwards when he realized Varner had not captured Sue or Heath when he was unconscious.  Hearing a noise, he opened his eyes and watched Varner make his way towards him.

“See you made your way back to the living.” grinned Varner.

Hurt and angry, Nick retorted, “Go to hell, Varner.”

Anger flared in the dark eyes and Nick braced himself for the pain when Varner swung his fists hitting him in the ribs and face.  His arms holding him upright against the tree, the edges of Nick’s vision darkened.  Backhanding him, Varner laughed when Nick’s head hit the tree and his head fell forward from the pain shooting through the lump on the back of his head.

Lifting the head up, Varner spoke to the unaware man, “Soon, I’ll have one of them.  Soon.”

“We still have some daylight left, how about if we ride up this path and check for tracks.” suggested Dan.

Agreeing, the three mounted their horses with Sue leading the way.  Keeping an eye on the trail for tracks, Sue made her way following the path up the mountain.  Rounding a bend, the group preceded to make their way through a narrow pass.  The walls of the pass caught the shadows of the disappearing sun and the darkness slowly gathered around the riders.  Three quarters of the way through the pass, the three looked up at the sounds coming from above them.  Sheer terror gripped the riders’ souls at the sight of the rocks plummeting down towards them.

Letting out a yell and kicking her horse, Sue let him have his head as he ran through the pass in fright from the Yaqui yell.  Reaching the end and yanking back on the reins, her heart sank at the empty trail behind her.

Jumping off the horse and tying the frightened animal to a branch, Sue ran back to the rocks that lay in the pass.  Coughing from the rising dust, she called frantically, “Heath!  Dan!  ANSWER ME!”

Panic moved her to climb up the rocks looking for her companions.  Climbing the obstruction, halfway to the top a rock shifted and sent her tumbling backwards down the pile.  Crying out in pain when she landed on a rock, hitting her left side and rolling onto the hard packed trail with the rifle falling out of her hand.  Gasping from the air that was knocked out of her and the pain in her side, Sue rolled to her stomach from her curled position and climbed to her knees.    Staggering to her feet, she felt the pain flaring in her abdomen.

“Think!” muttered Sue trying to ignore the stabbing pain and looking at the pile of rocks before her.  Looking at the walls of the pass for a way around the rocks, she sighed in frustration.   Slowly walking back to her horse, she took the rope off the saddle and headed through the trees to find her way to the top of the wall of the pass.

Working her way through the trees, she made an estimated guess of where the rockslide had happened.  Cutting back to where the pass was, she approached the edge and peered over.  Her estimation off, she continued down further and peered over the edge.  Laying on her tender stomach, she felt sick at the sight of a horse’s leg jutting from the pile of rocks.    Unable to tell which horse it was, she called, “HEATH!  DAN!”

Looking around for a place to tie off her rope, she looped it around the trunk of a tree and tied a knot.  Walking over, she threw the rope over the edge.  Holding the rope in her hands and preparing to go over the edge, she froze at the sound of the hammer of a pistol being cocked.

Catching the look in the emerald eyes, Varner grinned, “You can try it, but you won’t make it.  Now, let go of the rope and keep your hands where I can see them.“

Chapter 65

The Yaqui yell from Sue, who was ten years ahead of them,  startled Dan and Heath.  A split second was all that was necessary to tell them they couldn’t make it through the pass or turn their horses around to avoid the rock slide.  Jumping off, they scurried to find cover from the rocks that were raining down.  Heath’s head showed red as a rock glanced off the side.  Seeing Heath stumble, Dan grabbed his arm and threw him in a small crevice on the wall pass.  A small boulder caught him in the chest and his scream of agony was cut off in his throat when his head was smashed.  His lifeless body not feeling the other stones that piled on him and covered him in his final resting place.

“Heath! Dan!” was the muffled far away echo through the pass that slowly worked it’s way through the unconscious state of the blond laying in the crevice.   Coughing and moaning, he pulled himself up on his elbows.

“Sue” whispered Heath fighting to open his eyes.  Wiping his hand across them, he panicked when he only saw darkness before him.  Moving slightly, he bumped into the wall beside him and felt it with his hand.  Reaching out with his left hand, he felt the other wall just inches away.  Fumbling for a match, he lit it and looked around in shock.

Realizing he was alone in the small area, he crawled to his knees fighting the dizziness within.  Lighting another match, he stared at the rocks before him and felt a chill tickle his soul.   Taking deep breaths, he fought the panic that was rising within him at the thought of being buried alive in the darkness.

“Stop it Heath!  Get a hold of yourself.” he mumbled.  Still gasping for air, he glanced upward and saw a small sliver of light that allowed hope to flare within.

“Dan?  Can you hear me?” called Heath.  Standing on the edge of his toes, he reached up and pushed.

Fighting the renewed panic at the rock’s lack of movement, he took another breath and imagined sunshine on the open range in his mind.  Feeling the calmness returning, he reached and pushed with the strength of a madman.  The stone tumbled down opening the sliver by a few inches and letting a small amount of light in from the retiring sun.   Repeating the process, he finally opened an area that was wide enough for him to crawl through.  Leaning against the wall, he closed his eyes and breathed the air deeply.  Pulling himself up with shaky arms, he wormed his way through the opening and over the pile of rocks.  Landing on the trail, his eyes widened  and he gagged at the sight of the smashed fingers laying under the pile of stones.

Standing against the wall, he vomited and jumped back in surprise when a rope  landed beside him.  Stepping away from the wall, he opened his mouth to call out to Sue.  Seeing her freeze on the rope and look at someone, he stopped the words from leaving.   Fear gripped him as she stood still and taking the rope in his hands, he gently tugged it hoping she would be the only one to receive the signal.

Chapter 66

Catching the look in the emerald eyes, Varner grinned, “You can try it, but you won’t make it.  Now, let go of the rope and keep your hands where I can see them.“

Feeling a gentle tug on the rope between her hands, Sue breathed a small sigh and dropped the rope to the ground.

Looking into the dark eyes, she lifted her hands and snarled,  “I was hoping to see you through the sights on my rifle, Varner.”

“Sorry to disappoint you.” said Varner motioning her over with a move of the gun.  Walking forward, Sue watched Varner carefully and walked past him.

“Hold it.”

Stopping, she felt him slid the pistol out of the holster and winced at the force he used to shove the gun into her already bruised back.

Bending forward, Varner whispered in her ear, “Walk and don’t try anything.  You know I’ll pull the trigger.”

Varner carefully watched the woman in front of him as they walked back to the campsite, noting how she was favoring her left side.   When he started the rockslide, he did not know which ones would come out survivors or corpses until he heard Sue Weston calling to the men with her.  He had known they would follow the trail and the rockslide had been a last minute addition to the plan to weed out some of those following.

“Hey Barkley, I brought you a visitor.” gloated Varner as they entered the area.

Walking into the campsite, Sue saw Nick against the tree in the fading light and smiled, “Hi, Nick.”

“Hi yourself.” said Nick with a smile at the woman across the campsite.

“Too bad about Thomson and Baldwin.” said Varner with callous delight at the shock that formed on Nick’s face.

“How do ya’ like your memento from our last visit.” sneered Sue angrily at the man behind her.

Nick watched helplessly as Varner brought her to her knees with an angry punch to her back.  Sue’s face draining of color from the explosion of pain in the injured area.

“YOU’RE A DEAD MAN VARNER!” screamed Nick in rage fighting the rope that bound him.  “I’M GONNA RIP YOU APART!”

Gasping for air and falling over onto her side to keep an eye on her captor, Sue’s shaky right hand reached under her vest for the knife.

Chapter 67

Feeling the rope move and seeing Sue’s hands raise, Heath watched as she stepped away from the edge.  Reaching down, he checked to make sure the thong on his pistol was still in place.

Counting to fifty, he gathered his strength and grabbed the rope.  Pulling himself up, he climbed hand over hand.  Stopping a few inches away from the top, his muscles quivered in protest while he listened for sounds.  Hearing none, he slowly peered over the top and his eyes saw only trees and bushes.  Pulling himself up onto the top of the wall, he lay on the ground panting from the exertion and closed his eyes against the pounding headache.   Hearing Nick’s scream of anger, Heath climbed to his feet and stumbled towards the sound in the darkness.  His heart freezing with fear at the sound of a gunshot and the piercing scream of pain that followed.

Miguel and Juan lead Tom Watkins along with three rangers up the trail.  Darkness was falling around them as they swiftly rode striving to catch up to the three friends before Varner caught up to them.  The two Yaqui teenagers had shown up at the mission inquiring about the tribe’s adopted sister, Sue Weston.  Knowing where Varner had held Samuels, the Sheriff asked the boys to lead the lawmen to the area of the cave.

Reaching the pass, the boys and men stared at the obstruction of fallen rocks.  Dismounting, they walked closer to search for a way around.  Miguel grabbed the sheriff’s arm and pointed at the rocks.

Seeing the fingers, Tom and one of the rangers, carefully moved the rocks to reveal who lay beneath.  Lifting the last rock, both men gasped at the distorted face that lay underneath.

“Do you think the others are buried also?” asked Bill taking a blanket and covering the face of their captain.

Tom shook his head and frowned, “It’s hard to say.  They..”

A shot echoed down the pass and stopped the words in his throat as the scream sent shivers up their spines.  Using the rope, the men prayed it would hold as they climbed to the top and followed the teenagers to the area of the cave.
