Chapter 68
Varner laughed at the bellow of rage from Nick, pointed
his gun and pulled the trigger.
“NO!” shouted Nick.
The anguished scream of pain cut through Nick’s heart when
the bullet entered her thigh. Dropping
the knife behind her, she held onto her leg and cried at the fire that was
burning her skin. Grabbing onto the wound, Sue clamped her hand down to stem
the flow of blood, sucking in her breath from the pain.
“YOU BASTARD!” screamed Nick with tears running down his
face at the sense of helplessness overpowering him. “SUE!”
“I’ve waited four years to do that!” yelled Varner. Kneeling beside her, he tipped her chin up
with the hot barrel of the pistol and looked into the eyes dazed with
pain. “Don’t worry, we’re not done
yet!”
Reaching the campsite, Heath drew his gun and pointed it
at Varner’s back. “Yes, you are.”
Hearing the voice behind him, Varner grabbed the woman
before him and turned with her in his arms.
His left arm around her throat and the other holding the pistol to her
head. “Drop it, Thomson!”
“KILL HIM HEATH!” screamed Nick. “SHOOT HIM!”
Heath stared at the man holding his friend and
yelled, “Let her go!”
Tightening his grip around her neck, Varner screamed from
his kneeling position, “I’ll put another bullet in her, drop it!”
Her right hand was holding onto the forearm that squeezed
her throat, Sue felt the ground with her fingers and pulled the knife to
her. Grabbing the hilt of the knife,
she plunged it into his left foot and pushed the gun up with her right
hand. Screaming in pain, Varner fell backwards
to the earth and stared up at the stars with a bullet hole between his lifeless
eyes.
Falling to the side, Sue let the darkness and the pain
carry her away. Rushing to Nick, Heath
cut the ropes that bound him and hugged his brother before helping him to her
side.
Taking his handkerchief, Heath made a tourniquet, tied it
around her leg while Nick held her in his arms and whispered in her ear. Putting more wood on the fire, Heath tore
his shirt and gingerly wiped the blood off Nick’s face with water from Varner’s
canteen.
Peering at the shoulder wound that was no longer bleeding,
Heath looked into the hazel eyes and flashed a lop-sided grin, “Glad to see you didn’t lose all your blood,
big brother.”
“I missed you too, little brother.” said Nick with a smile. Studying the blue expressive eyes, he asked
with a whisper, “Dan?”
Shaking his head, Heath said quietly, “Rockslide.”
Moaning, Sue opened her eyes and gazed at the two
men. Reaching up her hand, she gently
touched Nick’s bruised face and whispered, “Nick, you alright?”
Holding her hand, he kissed her fingers gently and replied
in a husky voice, “I am now, honey.”
“Dan?” whispered Sue watching Heath’s eyes fill with
sorrow and shake his head negatively. Her
emerald eyes filled with tears and Nick tightened his hold.
Tom and the others rushed into the clearing startling the
three on the ground. Observing the
wounds on the three, he barked “Get some water boiling and some bandages.”
Looking up into the hazel eyes, Sue was overwhelmed with
the love shining back at her and gave a tired smile, “I love you, Nick
Barkley. Will you marry me?”
Overcoming the shock of the unorthodox proposal, Nick
smiled widely and nodded, “I would be honored.
I love you, too.”
Leaning over, Nick sealed his acceptance of the offer with
a tender kiss as Heath watched with tears in his eyes.
“Nick?” whispered Sue, her eyes slowly drooping.
“Yeah, honey?” asked Nick as he leaned forward.
“I’m tired, Nick.
No more mountains for me.” was the whispered reply and the eyelids
closed while the brothers laughed and nodded their heads in agreement.
Chapter 69
The trip down the mountain had been exhausting on the
injured people. Reaching the office of
Dr. Swenson, the sheriff and the rangers carried Sue and Nick inside. Heath walked in under his own power, albeit
on shaky legs.
Nick’s concussion and the loss of blood had weakened
him. A fever had started from the
infection that started to settle in the uncleaned wound. The pain in Sue’s abdomen had become
excruciating until unconsciousness summoned her and the men were unable to
awaken her outside of town.
Dr. Swenson and his nurse set out to perform immediate
surgery. Nick and Heath sent prayers to
the heavens above when they were told her spleen had been injured and needed to
be removed. The wound on her leg would
be taken care of after the delicate surgery had been performed.
Cleaning Nick’s wounds as best he could, Father Martinez
sat with the brothers and the sheriff while they waited for the surgery to be
completed.
“Nick, why don’t ya’ lay down?” suggested Heath quietly.
“I’m okay, Heath.” whispered Nick. “I wanna be there when she wakes up.”
Heath nodded, “I know Nick, but you’re making yourself weaker
by not resting. If you don’t rest, you
won’t be there when she wakes up. Doc
said it’d be a few hours before he was finished.”
Heath watched a thoughtful look appear on Nick’s face and
he spoke softly, “I remember looking
into Dan’s eyes at the funeral. Dan
loved her, didn’t he?”
Turning sideways on the sofa, Heath put his arms around
Nick and pulled him back to lean against him.
Sighing, he whispered in Nick’s ear,
“He loved her ever since he first met her. Sue never felt the same and only cared for him as a friend.”
Nodding, Nick closed his eyes and said wistfully, “Heath,
I’m getting married!”
Chuckling, Heath tightened his hold on his brother. “You sure are big brother. Now get some rest. I’ll wake you when the doc comes out.”
Chapter 70
The surgery to remove her injured organ was performed one
week ago and had been successful. When
Sue was well enough to talk, she explained about her fall down the pile of
rocks. The doctor had surmised that
when she landed on the rock, the blunt force of the fall had damaged her
spleen. The vicious hit from Varner on
her back had not helped either. Dr.
Swenson was pleased with the progress of her surgery to remove the spleen, but
still concerned about her leg. The
bullet from Varner’s gun had lodged in the bone. Removing it from the bone had been difficult.
Glancing at the leg encased in splints and hanging by some
contraption to keep it straight and steady, Nick rubbed his thumb across her
palm. He was deep in thought
remembering the conversation, when the doctor had explained to her the
importance of keeping the leg straight and allowing the bone to heal.
“Can’t you just plaster it, doc?” asked Sue quietly.
“Not yet. The
plaster will need to cover your whole leg and the bullet wound has to heal
first before we can do that.” explained Dr. Swenson patiently.
Turning her head to look out the window, Sue sighed,
“Then?”
“Then after the plaster comes off, you will have to
rebuild the strength in that leg by exercises.”
“I’m gonna limp, huh?” inquired Sue while Nick squeezed
her hand.
Smiling tenderly, Dr. Swenson said, “No one can predict
the future, Miss Weston. I think with
your active lifestyle and determination, you’ll do fine.”
When the doctor had left the room, Nick waited for the
tears or anger to come out, but none was forthcoming.
“Sue, you okay?” whispered Nick concerned with the
silence.
Looking into his hazel eyes, Sue nodded and simply stated,
“Guess we won’t be dancing at Jack’s wedding, Nick.”
Sue opened her eyes and was rewarded by the sight of the
handsome cowboy by her bedside.
Smiling, Nick greeted her with a kiss and whispered, “Hi,
my chameleon.”
Sue winced at a twinge of pain and grinned back at
him. “Hi, Nick.”
“I got a telegram from Jack.” said Nick propping pillows
behind her so she could sit up.
“Thanks.” smiled Sue gratefully. “What’s it say?”
“It says and I quote..
Rustlers caught
Fred says Sue was right
Congratulations
Hope to see you soon.”
Laughing and grabbing her side as the twinge flared
again, Sue gloated, “Told ya’,
Barkley!”
Sitting beside her, Nick asked innocently, “What are you
talking about?”
Gesturing wildly, Sue rolled her eyes, “Don’t give me that
innocent look, Nick Barkley! You
laughed as much as Fred when I said those rustlers were taking the cattle
through the mountains that were central to both Stockton and Modesto. Admit it!”
Grabbing the flailing hand, Nick smiled, “The only thing
I’m gonna admit to is that I love you very much.”
Yanking her hand back, Sue stared into the hazel eyes, “Oh
no, you don’t! Don’t be thinking you’re
getting off that easy. Come on, just
admit it!”
Leaning forward, Nick softly kissed her eyelids and lips,
“Make me.”
With her heart palpating, Sue whispered. “With pleasure.”
Holding his face in her hands, she pulled it to her and
gently kissed his lips. Sue deepened
the kiss while Nick groaned from the desire aroused in him. Both bodies heaving from the loss of breath
as they stared into each other’s eyes.
Kissing her tenderly, Nick caressed her cheek.
“Nick, you’ll have to plan the wedding.” stated Sue.
Laughing out loud, Nick snorted, “I’m not planning
it. That’s the woman’s job!”
Crossing her arms, Sue smiled, “Nick, I asked you to marry
me. It’s only fair you plan it! Whenever the man asks, the woman always has
to plan it. Turn around is fair play,
don’t you think?”
Jumping up from the bed, Nick blustered, “HONEY, YOU CAN’T
BE SERIOUS!”
Waiting for him to stop complaining, Sue gestured him
over. Looking at him, Sue said, “Nick,
I can’t plan it in my condition. I
can’t even get out of this bed til the doc plasters my leg. Darling, it doesn’t have to be anything
fancy, just a small ceremony.”
Staring at her as if she had two heads, Nick rose, kissed
her and walked out of the room muttering to himself, “Nothing fancy, just a
small ceremony. What the hell do I know
about weddings.”
Watching the retreating back, Sue grinned as she listened
to his ramblings on the way out. “Sue
Weston, you are so bad!”
Chapter 71
Heath and Tom looked at Nick when he walked into the
office and sat in the chair with a dazed look on his face.
“Big brother, did you see Sue this morning?” asked Heath.
Nick nodded a response to the question as the conversation
kept rolling around in his mind.
Waving a hand in front of Nick’s eyes, Heath teased,
“Nick, you in there?”
Slapping the hand, Nick growled, “Very funny! Of course, I’m here.”
Tom grinned at the two and shook his head, “What’s the
matter, Nick? You seem a little out of
it. Anything to do with your fiancé?”
Hearing the word fiancé, Nick jumped up startling the two
men, “SUE SAYS I HAVE TO PLAN THE WEDDING! JUST CAUSE SHE PROPOSED TO ME!”
Stifling a grin, Heath nodded, “Well, it does kinda make
sense, Nick.”
“I agree with Heath.” smiled Tom sipping his coffee.
“I think this Texas heat must dry up people’s brains.”
groaned Nick sitting back down and holding his head in his hands. “What the hell do I know about weddings?”
“Nick, ain’t ya ever been to a wedding before?” inquired
Heath incredulously.
Rolling his eyes, Nick snapped, “Of course, I’ve been to a
wedding!”
“Then what’s the problem?” asked Tom innocently.
“GREAT! YOU TWO
ARE NO HELP!” shouted Nick slamming the door behind him.
Looking at each other, the two burst out laughing until
tears rolled down their cheeks. Heath
wiped his eyes and stood up, “I better go see if she’s really gonna put him
through that.”
“I’ll be by tonight to play poker.” replied Tom as Heath
left.
Chapter 72
Dr. Swenson greeted the man of the cloth, spoke softly to
the padre and shook his head. Walking
in, Father Martinez smiled at the young woman laying in the bed.
“Father, how are things at the mission?” asked Sue with a
shake of his hand.
Sitting in the chair by the bed, the Father replied, “The
children keep us very busy and entertained.”
Sue nodded, “I can only imagine. Thanks for taking care of Petey, Doc tells me he’s home and doing
much better.”
“I am only too happy to help.” smiled Father
Martinez. “How are you doing?”
Watching her face carefully, Father Martinez caught the
fear quickly flicker and vanish in the emerald eyes.
Sighing, Sue shrugged, “I’ll be better once I can get back
on my feet. After that, well, we’ll see.”
Leaning forward, he patted the hand laying on the bed and
said quietly, “We all bear burdens in our journey through this life until we
all meet in his kingdom. How we carry
them is up to us.”
Smiling slightly, Sue shook his hand and replied, “Thank
you, Father. I’ll come out to the
mission to see you before I leave for Stockton.”
“Anytime, Miss Weston.
We’ll look forward to having you visit us.” smiled Father Martinez.
Heath nodded and spoke to the departing man in the hallway
for a few minutes before entering the room where Sue was looking out the window
and her face awash with thoughtfulness.
Heath approached the bed and sat beside her.
“Sue.” said Heath quietly.
Hearing the soft voice breaking through her thoughts, Sue
reined in her emotions and looked at her friend, “Heath, I didn’t hear you come
in.”
“Boy howdy, you were a million miles away.”
“Just thinking, sorry.” said Sue softly. Glancing at Heath, she asked, “Did you see
Nick this morning?”
Heath grinned, “You’re not really gonna have Nick plan the
wedding, are ya’?”
Sue replied, “Why not?
Do you think just cause I’m a woman, I’d know anything about planning a
wedding?”
Heath sighed, “I guess not. This is gonna make Nick crazy and I have to live with him!”
“As someone told me recently, Heath. We all bear burdens in our journey through
this life.” said Sue in a serious tone.
“I don’t think that means having to listen to Nick while
he’s planning a wedding.” said Heath rolling his eyes at her chuckle.
“Don’t worry, you can tell him I was only funning.” stated
Sue and then groaned. “What the hell do
I know about planning a wedding?”
“Thanks!” Kissing
her forehead, Heath stood, “I think I’ll find that brother of mine and let him
know.”
Chapter 73
Walking to the doctor’s office, Nick stopped and greeted
the doctor as he was leaving the office.
“Doc, how’s your patient?” smiled Nick.
Dr. Swenson sighed, “I have to admit, Mr. Barkley, I’m
worried about her.”
Puzzled, Nick asked, “You mean about her leg?”
“No. I’ve known Miss Weston for a few years now and she’s
taking it all a bit too, well, too quiet.” stated Dr. Swenson.
“She was a little quiet the other day when you were discussing
the treatment.” admitted Nick with a frown.
“I can see it when I examine her, she’s afraid. Mr. Barkley, try to get her to open up and
talk about her fears. Father Martinez
spoke with her this morning and he thought she was a little quiet, too.”
explained Dr. Swenson.
Nick nodded, “Okay, Doc.
I’ll do whatever I have to.”
Patting Nick’s shoulder, the doctor smiled, “I know you
will. Anything you can do to alleviate
any extra stress or burden will help.
I’d like her to stay focused on the rehabilitation of her leg as much as
possible. I should be able to put the
plaster on next week. Miss Weston’s
gonna need all the support and love you can give her during the wait for the
bone to heal.”
“Okay, thanks, doc.” said Nick quietly as he opened the
door and walked down the hallway to her room.
Pausing outside the door, Nick leaned against the wall and pondered the
doctor’s words. Seeing Heath coming
down the hall, Nick silenced him with a finger to his lips. Taking a hold of Heath’s arm, Nick pulled
him outside.
“What’s the matter, Nick?” asked Heath. “Did you two have
a fight?”
Tapping his gloves against his leg, Nick said quietly,
“Heath, does Sue seem to be taking everything a little calmly?”
Tilting his head, Heath thought on Nick’s words. “Yeah, but you can never tell with Sue,
why?”
“Well, the doc seems to think she’s taking it too
calmly. Has she said anything about
concerns with her leg?”
Shaking his head, Heath replied quietly, “No, she
hasn’t. She say something to you?”
Frowning, Nick shook his head, “Come to think of it,
whenever I bring it up, she changes the subject.”
“Maybe she’s just trying not to get all worked up about
it.” suggested Heath.
Nick sighed, “Well, the only one way to find out is to have
a little talk with my wife to be.”
Turning to leave, Heath looked back and smiled, “Nick, she
said you didn’t have to plan the wedding.
Sue said she was only funning and she’d take care of it.”
Remembering the doctor’s words, Nick grabbed Heath by the
shoulder, “Doc also said to alleviate any extra burden and stress on Sue. I’d think planning a wedding would be a
burden, don’t you little brother?”
“I guess so. I
know Sonja has been all worked up about it.” said Heath with a tender smile as
he thought of his own fiancee.
Putting his arm over Heath’s shoulders, Nick smiled,
“Little brother, we’re gonna relieve my chameleon and your friend of that
burden.”
Looking at Nick in surprise, Heath snorted, “It’s your
wedding, Nick. Count me out.”
“Heath, I need your help.
Sue needs your help.” pleaded Nick sincerely.
As he stared into the worried hazel eyes, Heath found
himself nodding in agreement. “Okay.”
“Thanks, Heath.” whispered Nick pulling his brother into a
quick hug. “I’ll see you at Tom’s later.”
Heath left and wandered back to Tom’s house. “Boy howdy, what a brother won’t do for
another.” thought Heath with a sigh.
“Nick, I..” said Sue quietly as Nick sat beside her.
Putting his fingers on her lips, Nick took her hands,
smiled into the red-rimmed emerald eyes and said softly, “Suzanne Weston, do
you know what I love about you?”
Sue sighed slightly, “Nick, I was only teasing about you
planning the wedding.”
“I know, but really, do you know what I love about you?” asked
Nick as he kissed her fingertips.
Looking at him curiously, Sue teased halfheartedly, “My
mind?”
“I do love your mind and your body. But, most of all I love your passion for
those you care about. Your
generosity. Your sense of justice and
fairness. Your sense of humor. Your love for the land beneath you. I even love your temper, especially when we
make up afterwards. I love each and
everything about you.”
Tears welled in her eyes while her heart swelled with love
for this man beside her. Squeezing his
hands, Sue whispered, “Nick, I, I don’t know what to say. I’m at a loss for words.”
Caressing her cheek, Nick said quietly, “I love you and I
don’t wanna lose you.”
“I’m not going anywhere.”
“When you don’t share your fears and thoughts with me,
you’re going someplace else in your mind.” explained Nick. “Don’t keep your fears inside and shut me
out. I couldn’t go through that again.”
Memories of his tormented soul, while she traveled through
the snow packed mountains assaulted her and Sue shook her head, “I don’t mean
to shut you out. I’d never want to hurt
you like that again.”
“Sue, talk to me.” urged Nick softly.
“I am worried, Nick.” admitted Sue softly. “I know that even if my leg doesn’t heal
correctly, I can still ride and ranch.
I just keep trying to tell myself it’ll just be an inconvenience, but
I’m scared.”
“I’ll love you no matter what happens.” replied Nick with
a smile. “I’m here with you, honey.”
Touching his cheek, Sue smiled, “I know. I’m ashamed that I’ve been having such vain
thoughts. There’s lots of other people
that deal with worse things than a limp.
As Father Martinez said, ‘It’s up to me how I deal with the burdens life
brings’ I’m sorry, I worried you.”
Brushing his lips against hers, he gently kissed her. “Whatever the future brings, we’ll deal with
together. Okay?”
“Deal.” Sue whispered before kissing him back. Feeling his response, she deepened the kiss
and welcomed the breathlessness between them.
Passions flaring, his lips and tongue burned the skin of her
throat. Working his way down her neck,
he left a trail of intimate kisses down to the valley of her bosoms. Pushing aside the material of her
undergarments, he seared her skin, her
soft moans of desire and need floated to his ears. He reluctantly pushed the garments back in place. Guiding his lips to hers, she tenderly
kissed him.
Lifting his head, she moaned and stared into the fiery
eyes, “Nick, let’s not have a long engagement, okay?”
He tenderly kissed her and groaned, “How about four
months?”
Holding onto him and kissing his weathered cheek, she
moaned, “That’s too long!”
Chuckling, he grinned, “In one week, you’ll have the
plaster on, we’ll be back in Stockton shortly after that and then I’ll finish
what I started here.”
“Promises.
Promises.” whispered Sue her eyes holding a promise of passion that
would not be denied in the near future.
Sue woke the nurse shortly before eleven that night in
pain and screaming for help. Dr.
Swenson ran into the room from a sound sleep.
The next morning, walking into the room, Nick stopped at
the pale face that greeted him. It was
lined with exhaustion and tears were streaming down her cheeks. Taking her hands, Nick became alarmed at the
tremble in them.
“Sue, what is it?” asked Nick softly.
Nick heard the anguished whisper. “I don’t know how to tell you. I should’ve known. I don’t know why I didn’t feel it.”
Fear grabbed Nick’s heart and held it in it’s grip, “What’s wrong? Honey, tell…”
Putting up her hand to silence him, Nick watched the tears
trickle down and heard the shaky breath she inhaled, “I lost our baby, last night.
I didn’t mean to, I just didn’t know.
”
Her tormented words shocked him to the very core of his
soul. ‘A baby. I was gonna be a daddy.’ Sobs of pain and guilt reached his
ears. Tears of loss streamed down his
face, and he wrapped his arms tightly around her.
His gentle voice quivered with emotion, “Honey, you didn’t do anything wrong. It’s not your fault.”
Embracing the strength he was offering and tightening her
hold, Sue whispered between sobs. “I’ve
always wanted to be a mother. I failed
you. I’d been having pains, but I
thought it was from the surgery. I’m
sorry, I didn’t even know I was pregnant.
Please forgive me, Nick.”
Rocking her gently, he stroked her hair and shushed her
softly, “Sue, there’s nothing to forgive.
You didn’t fail me. It wasn’t
your fault. It’ll be alright, you’ll
see.”
Laying her back onto the pillows, Nick wiped her
tears. “I love you. I’m here with you, right by your side. Loving each other means sharing the good
and the bad, no matter what.”
“Nick, I’m so confused.
How could I not know?” whispered Sue hoarsely. “I just don’t understand how I didn’t know.”
“Shhhhh. Close
your eyes and after you rest, we’ll talk to Dr. Swenson and get answers to your
questions. Please honey, rest.” said
Nick softly.
Closing her eyes, the spent woman fell asleep to the feel
of Nick tenderly caressing her cheek.
‘Was it a boy or a girl’ his mind echoed over and over as the loss
chilled him to his soul. ‘I was gonna
be a father.’
Blinking back the tears that threatened to start again,
Nick raised his eyes and sent a silent plea upwards. ‘Please, she’s been
through so much already. Just give her
the sunshine she deserves.’
Rising on shaky legs, Nick slowly made his way to the home
of Sheriff Watson and entered the living room.
Heath’s gut twisted at the look of anguish on Nick’s face, “Nick, what
is it? Is it her leg?”
Stumbling over in a daze, he collapsed into Heath’s arms
and deep sobs of grief wracked his body, “Sue lost our baby last night.”
Kneeling on the floor and tightly holding him, Heath’s
tears mixed with Nick’s as he rocked him gently, offering what comfort he could
to his distraught brother.
Chapter 76
The sobs slowly ebbed out of his grieving brother and
Heath helped him onto the sofa. Going
to the bar, he poured two drinks and put one in Nick’s trembling hands. Bringing a chair over, he sat down in front
of the shaking man.
“Drink it, Nick.” ordered Heath quietly.
Taking a swallow, Nick welcomed the burning sensation as
it went down his strained throat.
Running his hand through his hair, he quietly told Heath of the events
of the morning.
Nick voice choked with guilt and grief was barely above a
whisper, “I should’ve been there for
her.”
“If you’d known Sue was with child, you would’ve been
there. But neither of you knew. Don’t feel guilty, Nick. You didn’t know.” explained Heath quietly
watching the hazel eyes fill with unshed tears.
“I keep wondering if it was a boy or a girl.” stammered
Nick. “It could have been a little girl
who looked just like Sue. What a
beautiful baby that would’ve been.”
Squeezing the black clad shoulder, Heath said softly. “I’m
sorry, Nick. You two would have been
wonderful parents.”
“Heath, I didn’t consider what you’d think about
this.” Wiping his eyes, Nick looked
warily into the blue eyes, “I know it’s
a shock. Are you angry with us?”
“No, I’m not angry.
You are adults and sometimes things don’t go as planned. My own birth is evidence of that, but with
you and Sue it’s different.” replied
Heath quietly. “I know ya’ love her,
Nick. You’ll be there for her. If you didn’t love her, you’d have to leave
the country, one step ahead of me.”
“I love her more than life itself, Heath.” whispered Nick.
“She thinks she’s failed me. She’s in
so much turmoil.”
Grabbing the back of Nick’s neck, Heath gave him a little
shake, “All you can do is be there for her.
Sue’s strong in a lot of ways, but deep down she’s soft as a butterfly’s
wings with a heart as big as Texas.”
Nick nodded, “I’m a lucky man, little brother, to have you
both in my life.”
Flashing him a lop-sided grin, Heath agreed, “That you
are, big brother, that you are.”
Pulling Heath into his arms, Nick tightened his hold and
whispered, “You’ll be a wonderful father someday too, Heath. I wanna be there when she wakes up. Thanks, little brother.”
“I’ll come by this afternoon after Sue’s had time to
rest.” said Heath patting his brother on the back. “Give her my love.”
“I will.” replied Nick closing the door behind him.
Sagging against the door, tears streamed down Heath’s
face. His heart mourning for the niece
or nephew be would never know. Closing
his eyes, he prayed for his brother and his friend to help each other through
this time.
Chapter 77
“Howby doy, I feel fine.”
Nick shook his head and grinned at the drugged up woman on
the bed.
Looking at the doc, Nick snorted, “I think you gave her
too much pain killer, doc. She’s
talking like she’s drunk.”
“Hmmm, she is a little happy. When we start plastering her leg, she won’t feel a thing. She’ll be asleep soon.” smiled Dr. Swenson
as he untied the ropes holding the leg straight and lowered it to the bed.
Giggling, Sue smiled widely, “Ick, my leg moves!”
“I see that, honey.” said Nick patiently.
Dr. Swenson stifled his chuckle as he unwrapped the
binding on the leg. Gingerly running
his hand down the limb, Sue whispered loudly to Nick. “Don’t get angry, he’s a
proflessional.”
Chuckling, Nick nodded, “I know, honey. You feel anything?”
Tapping his cheek, she smiled, “Just fluffy clouds!”
Kissing the hand, he breathed a sigh of relief, “Good.”
Looking around the room, Sue asked in a drowsy voice, “Heat?”
“Heat had to go back to work the ranch, remember?”
Laying her head back on the pillow, Sue replied sleepily,
“Ranch walking.”
“Well, he could walk the ranch, but I think he’d feel
better riding.” teased Nick.
Smiling at the handsome cowboy and trying to keep her eyes
open, Sue whispered, “Yove la.”
“Yove la, too.” smirked Nick, caressing her cheek and
watching the eyelids close.
“At least she didn’t suffer the hallucination side
effect. Some patients have been known
to see animals and other things when they get a higher dose of morphine.” Plastering the leg while his nurse held it
in place, Dr. Swenson said softly, “You
can take her home in a couple of days.
Don’t worry, she’ll be fine.”
Chapter 78
Nick watched the doctor continue the plastering and let
his thoughts take him back. Over the
past week, they had focused on helping each other deal with the unexpected pain
and loss. Tears had flown abundantly
along with discussions of their future.
When the doctor had asked Sue about her cycles, she and
Nick had both turned a bright red at the line of questioning.
Shocked at the topic, Sue stammered, “Doc! That’s kinda personal, don’t ya’ think!”
“I’m a professional, Miss Weston. I realize this may be an uncomfortable
topic.” replied Dr. Swenson. “Did you know sometimes a woman can be
pregnant and still have a cycle?”
Sue shook her head and answered quietly, “No, I didn’t know that.”
“Do you know when your last one was?”
“They’re not on a regular basis. I just gotta think for a minute.” said Sue concentrating and
thinking back in time. “It was after
Sonja and Heath got engaged on New Year’s day. I’m real excited for Heath.
He’s got a wonderful woman in Sonja.
Then we got the new bull. Let’s
see that was the first week in February and I had it one week later.” stated
Sue quietly the embarrassment clearly showing on her face. Nick sat looking at the floor, trying to
ignore the topic while squeezing her hand in support.
Dr. Swenson had advised the couple that he felt she was
only a little over a month along when the miscarriage had happened. The trauma on her body from the mountain
ordeal could have been a factor or sometimes nature knew something wasn’t right
and would correct it on its own.
Patiently, he answered all their questions, listened to their fears and
handed out handkerchiefs to dry up the tears.
In the end, he felt they should have no problem conceiving in the
future.
Smiling, Nick’s thoughts focused on his little brother who
he had turned to in his time of need to help him through the dark waters of the
unknown and emotional path. Nick had
relied heavily on Heath’s strength and calming presence.
Eating breakfast the morning he was leaving for Stockton,
Heath watched the hazel eyes lit up with surprise and a grin brightened
his face, “I got it! I know what we’re gonna do for the wedding!”
“I thought Sue was gonna plan the wedding.”
Nick smiled slightly and shrugged, “I wanna do it,
Heath. I want to show her how much I
love her.”
Leaning forward, Heath grinned, “Okay, lay it on me. I’m all ears!”
When Nick finished, Heath smiled in surprise and teased
him gently, “If I was a woman I’d marry you myself, Nick.”
Blushing, Nick retorted, “Very funny Heath!”
“I didn’t realize you could be so romantic. I just thought you were loud.” replied Heath
with an innocent look.
Rolling his eyes, Nick snorted, “Come on! Be serious, Heath.”
Chuckling, Heath grinned, “Sorry, big brother. She’ll be swept away and those green eyes
will overflow from love and happiness.”
“She deserves the best, Heath. Will you help when I bring her back to Stockton?” asked Nick
excited at the idea.
Heath nodded,
“Anything, you need, anything at all.”
“Thanks, little brother.” smiled Nick relieved. Grabbing a piece of paper and pencil, he and
Heath started creating a list of the items they would need.
Chapter 79
Sue’s thoughts were on the two brothers and their opposite actions over the
past week. Heath, quiet and thoughtful, had given her a good dose of anger
before he left for Stockton. His concern for her emotional state pushing him to
the outburst. As long as she had known Heath, she was always startled when his
anger came out. She knew it was there inside of him, but he reined it in by
keeping a short leash on it. Smiling, she knew once again that an angry
outburst from him had shocked her into dealing with her emotional trauma.
Frowning, her thoughts turned to Nick, the man who had captured her heart and
soul. Since the loss of the baby, they both had suffered the lows and highs of
the emotional tide they were riding. Nick had been the pillar of strength that
offered patience, understanding and support. These things he offered and she
was thankful for them, however, that was all he offered. Emotionally, he had
withdrawn into himself and taken on Heath’s characteristic of quiet and
thoughtfulness.
Since the miscarriage, he handled her as if she were made of glass with a small
crack in it. She missed the fire in his eyes and the gentle touches of his
hands and lips. He would greet her with a kiss, but it was if he were afraid to
show the affection he had before.
They had both been relieved when the doctor had stated she would be able to
conceive again. Both of them wanted children in their future. The loss of the
first had come as a blow especially to her as a woman. Dr. Swenson had been
patient and addressed her questions and concerns about her feelings of inadequacy.
She hadn’t known about the baby, but as Father Martinez had asked her, “What
would you have done different? Would
you have not followed after Varner and Nick?
Would you have let Dan and Heath take that path on their own?”
Thinking on his questions, Sue shook her head and stated firmly, “No. I would’ve went after him even if I had
known. If I lost Nick, I think my soul
would be forever darkened.”
“Things happen for a reason, Miss Weston. Sometimes the reason is not clear at
the time but there is always a reason.”
Visiting the graveside of Dan yesterday, Nick had watched her grieve for the
friend who had given his life to save Heath.
The man who had always loved her and been there for her. After placing a gentle kiss on the
headstone, Nick held her close and carried her back to the wagon. Nick’s support was there as it had been over
the past week.
Leaning up against the headboard, Sue stared at the white plaster on her leg.
“The bone,” Dr. Swenson said “is not
technically broken as in fractured, but it was damaged and weakened by the
bullet that was lodged in it.” The
analogy fit Nick over the past week.
Nick was not technically broken in the body but he was damaged and
weakened in his soul.
Nick opened the door and kissed her forehead. “Here’s some clothes for
tomorrow, Sue.”
Stifling a sigh at his unconscious action, she opened the package Nick handed
her and saw the dress inside. Rolling her eyes and groaning at the item, she
stated, “I am not wearing that!”
“Sue, it makes sense to wear a dress. There’s no way you can get jeans on over
that cast.” explained Nick.
Sue responded sarcastically, “Really? I couldn’t have figured that out on my
own. Thanks, honey.”
The biting tone of her voice caused Nick to sigh and reply patiently, “You have
to wear something. You can’t wear a sheet.”
Sue snorted, “Nick, have you even bothered to look at this dress? Did you pick this out?”
“No, one of the sisters from the mission gave it to me.” replied Nick quietly.
“Let me look at it.”
Looking at the dress laying in the box, Nick’s eyes widened and he winced. “Who
would wear something like that?”
“Can’t you get a different one for me, Nick?” pleaded Sue. “I don’t wanna walk
around in that!”
His eyes remained transfixed on the dress with the large sunflower print and he
whispered softly, “I can’t. The store is closed and won’t open until tomorrow.”
“Well, get Tom and wake the owner up!” retorted Sue.
“Tom’s not here. He won’t be back until late tomorrow.” replied Nick. “Can’t
you just wear it in the morning until the store opens. We can buy a new one
before we get on the train.”
“Get me a sheet and I’ll wear that!” snapped Sue.
Throwing the box on the table by the bed, Nick shouted, “DAMMIT! YOU’LL JUST HAVE TO WEAR IT! I CAN’T GET YOU ANOTHER ONE UNTIL TOMORROW
AND YOU’RE NOT WALKING AROUND IN A SHEET!”
Smiling at the fire in the hazel eyes, Sue patted the spot on the bed beside
her. “Nick, come here.”
Looking at her, Nick shook his head, “I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY YOU JUST CAN’T
WEAR IT. IT’S ONLY GONNA BE FOR A
COUPLE OF HOURS.”
“Come here.” whispered Sue softly.
Stifling his anger and huffing, Nick sat stiffly on the bed and looked at his
boots. Reaching over, Sue lifted his face towards her and kissed him.
Nick drew back, stared into the green eyes and stated firmly, “I am not waking
up the storeowner.”
“Nick, I’m not made of glass.” said Sue watching a puzzled look cross his face.
“Do you realize you haven’t really kissed me since the miscarriage or even
raised your voice to me over this past week?”
“Yes, I have.” denied Nick softly.
“You’ve spoken to me firmly, but not with an upraised voice. You’ve given me kisses on my cheeks and
forehead. But have you kissed me like
this?” asked Sue brushing her lips against his and using her tongue to tease
him.
Tears welled in the confused hazel eyes and Sue smiled gently, “I love you,
Nick. It hasn’t been easy on either of us, but don’t be afraid to show me you
care. I won’t break.”
“I know you won’t break. I, I didn’t
realize I was treating you differently.” whispered Nick with regret. “I’m
sorry. I didn’t mean to.”
“Of course, you didn’t Nick. This past
week has been hard on both of us. I’m
not saying I understand why it happened, but we can’t change the fact that it
did happen. After we’re married, I know
we’ll have more babies.”
“That’s right, Sue. We will.”
Caressing his cheek, Sue said softly, “I think the gods were smiling on me when
I moved to California. I never imagined
being able to love anyone as much as I love you, Nick.”
“I think the gods were smiling down on both of us, honey.” replied Nick in
voice overfilling with emotion. “They’ll smile on us again when we have more
babies.”
“Nick, I’ve missed you.” whispered Sue in a voice filled with a longing that
mirrored the look in the emerald eyes.
Leaning forward, he hesitantly claimed her full lips and deepened the kiss in
response to her hunger. Savoring the
renewed passion between them, she pulled him closer to her. Kissing like two dating teenagers, they
reveled in the closeness of each other but confined within boundaries.
Laying beside her and holding her in his arms, Nick placed a gentle kiss on her
nose, “Are you anxious to go home tomorrow?”
“I sure am. I can’t wait to get home.” sighed Sue snuggling closer to him and
yawning. “Will you stay until I fall asleep?”
Kissing her gently, Nick smiled into the sleepy emerald eyes, “I will. Now get
some sleep, you have a big day ahead of you.”
Chapter 80
Walking into the room, Nick paused in the doorway and watched as Dr. Swenson
stood in front of the woman on crutches. Nodding his approval at her progress
as she made her way around the room.
“Very good, Miss Weston. In no time at all, you’ll be racing around on the
crutches.”
Sue smiled her thanks and grinned widely at the handsome man watching.
“Morning, Nick.”
Entering the room, Nick nodded at the doc and grinned, “Morning, Sue. You ready
to be sprung from this place?”
Laughing, Dr. Swenson replied, “I don’t think it will take much persuasion on
your part, Mr. Barkley. Miss Weston, I
wrote Dr. Merar and advised him of your injuries and treatment. Make sure you see him as soon as you arrive
in California.”
“I’ll see that she does.” replied Nick as Sue rolled her eyes. “Thanks for
everything.”
Shaking his hand, the doctor smiled, “My pleasure. Just take care of yourselves
and have a good trip home.”
“We will. Thanks doc for everything.” said Sue softly kissing his cheek. “If
you’re ever in California, make sure you stop for a visit.”
“I will.” Stated Dr. Swenson as he left the couple alone.
Nick stepped in front of Sue and caressed her cheek. Leaning forward, he tenderly kissed her and said softly, “You
ready, honey?”
Sighing, Sue shook her head, “I’m ready, Nick.”
Picking up her bag, Nick watched as she hobbled out of the room slowly on the
crutches. The cast on her leg hidden by
the material of the dress the sister had brought. Chuckling softly, he remembered the look on her face when Nick
had handed her the package the night before.
He paused at the door, Sue whispered as she went by him, “Nick, is the store
open?”
Closing the door, Nick nodded, “I saw it was open on my way here.”
“Good god, man! What are you waiting
for? Let’s go!” replied Sue with a
grin.
Laughing, he put her bag into the back of the wagon. Picking her up, Nick carried her down the steps and placed her in
the back. Putting the crutches beside
her, he hopped up on the seat and drove the team down the street.
Gathering her up in his arms, he carried her inside and placed her on the
counter. The storekeeper smiled and greeted her warmly, “Miss Weston, I hear
you’re on your way back to California.”
“That’s right, Mr. James. But, first I
need to purchase some traveling clothes. Can I see your dresses, please?” asked
Sue.
“Sure, let me get you a couple.” stated the storekeeper heading towards the
rack in the back of the store.
“Hey, Nick!” exclaimed Sue her eyes lighting up.
Looking to the item she pointed at, Nick smiled. “Will you look at that?”
“I know a certain brother of yours that would love that. Let’s get it for him!”
Standing in front of her, Nick teased
“Jarrod or Eugene?”
Taking a handful of his shirt, Sue pulled him closer until their noses were
touching and whispered, “Keep it up and I’ll have to kiss it out of you when
we’re riding in that private car to Stockton.”
Nick smirked, “I’m not sure if Jarrod would like it.”
“I’m warning you.” growled Sue her eyes betraying her serious tone.
“Well, I know Gene wouldn’t appreciate it.” replied Nick seriously.
“Ohhhh, you’re gonna pay, Mr. Barkley.” drawled Sue.
Eyes widening in anticipation, Nick’s reply was cut off by the return of the
storekeeper. Holding up two dresses in
front of the couple, Sue nodded. “Much better.
I’ll take both of them, a riding skirt, a blouse and the statue of the
stallion.”
Pleased, Mr. James smiled widely, “I’ll just wrap those up for you.”
Leaning forward, Nick kissed her eyelids and brushed her lips. “Promises.
Promises.”
Chapter 81
The train rambled down the track forging its way to
California, land of sunshine and opportunity.
Inside the last car of the train, it’s occupants laughed together as a
hand held a garment out the window and the wind took it away.
“Nick, what if some poor drifter finds that hideous
thing.” chuckled Sue dressed in a solid light blue shirt and denim skirt.
Pulling her into his arms on the sofa, Nick smirked,
“Probably scare the daylights out of him.”
“If he thinks that’s what the women in this part of the
country wear, he’ll never come back.” giggled Sue.
Picking up her hand, Nick placed a small kiss in the palm
of it. “Sue, you know I love ya’.”
Smiling widely, Sue whispered, “I know, Nick. I love you, too.”
“I don’t like it when someone breaks a promise to me.”
replied Nick seriously.
“I didn’t break any promises to you.” puzzled Sue. “What are you talking about?”
“In the store, you promised I’d pay. We’ve been on the train for at least thirty
minutes. I think you’re welching on me
and going back on your word.” stated Nick with a sly smile.
Watching the hazel eyes sear with emotion, Sue felt her
heart pounding in her chest and held his face in her hands. Placing gentle kisses on the corners of his
mouth, she whispered, “Can’t have my future husband thinking I’m a welcher now,
can we?”
Brushing her lips across his softly, Nick inhaled sharply
and whispered, “Can’t have that.”
Using her tongue and lips on his, groans of desire and
need could be heard over the rumbling wheels of the train. Time stood still as the method of payment
caused him to pull her onto his chest and hungrily respond to her delicate
method of torture. Deepening and
lingering kisses left them gasping for air.
Shirts were slowly opened revealing the arousal in each of them. Laying beside each other, they placed
delicate kisses on each other. Holding
on tightly, they moaned from
frustration knowing the passion could not be consummated. For now, they would be satisfied just
knowing their love was returned and the passion still simmered beneath the
surface.
“Do you want something to drink?” asked Nick breathing
heavily and watching the green eyes slowly lose the wanton look in them.
Placing a light kiss on his lips, Sue nodded, “Coffee
would be great.”
Reaching over, he slowly redid her undergarments and buttoned
her shirt while she did the same for him.
Leaning over, he smiled and claimed her lips in a lingering kiss, “Be
right back.”
Pushing herself into a sitting position, she leaned back
against the sofa and watched him close the door, heading to the dining
car. Picking up a newspaper from the
table beside the sofa, she started reading.
After completing the fourth page of the newspaper, she glanced at the
clock on the wall and wondered where he could be.
Grabbing her crutches, she slowly stood up and leaned on
the wooden sticks. The wobbling of the
car making it difficult for her to get her balance. Realizing, she wouldn’t be walking on the crutches while the car
was moving, she resigned to sitting in a chair at the nearby table. Pulling her leg up, she placed it on the
chair across from her and picked up a deck of cards.
Hearing the door open, an odor caught her nose. Looking up, she smiled as Nick came in
carrying a tray and made his way to the table.
Her eyes widened at the familiar odor as he neared and she snarled,
“Don’t come any closer!”
Puzzled, Nick replied, “Why? What’s the matter?”
Waving her hand in front of her, Sue blanched at the odor
and struggled to her feet. Holding a
hand outward to stop his forward movement, she shakily made her way to the
opposite side of the car on her crutches and sank into a chair from the effort.
“WHAT’S THE MATTER WITH YOU?” shouted Nick angrily.
“Nick, I think I’m gonna be sick.” moaned Sue.
Concerned flashed across his face and he hurriedly put the
tray on a table, “What’s the matter? Is
it your leg?”
“What is that smell?”
Grinning, Nick said in a pleased voice, “Some guy was
handing out free samples of the latest men’s cologne.”
“Was his name, Purcival McMann?” asked Sue fanning herself
to keep the odor away.
“Yeah, how did you know?” said Nick curiously squirming
from the glare she fixed on him from across the room.
“You have two choices, Nick. You can either throw your shirt out the window and hope that
takes the smell away.” paused Sue holding her head when the smell seemed to
intensify.
“I’M NOT THROWING MY SHIRT AWAY. I LIKE THIS SHIRT!” shouted Nick with an incredulous look.
“OR OPEN ALL THE WINDOWS AND STAY ON THAT SIDE OF THE CAR
ALL THE WAY TO STOCKTON.” yelled Sue angrily.
Nick looked back at the man who had knocked and entered
the private car, “Mr. Barkley, I meant to give you some samples for your
brothers.”
Seeing the man responsible for the return of the offensive
odor, Sue snapped, “Nick, where’s my gun?”
Nick watched as the salesman’s pallor turned pale and the
sweat broke out on his forehead.
Stammering, Purcival threw the samples onto the nearest table and he
backed slowly to the door of the car, “Miss Weston? Really, Miss Weston, it was an accident. Good day, Mr. Barkley!”
Nick stood routed to the floor, staring at the fleeing
back of the salesman and looked to the back of the car in amazement at the
woman sitting there sporting a greenish color.
Moving to the side of the car, he opened the windows. Peeling off his shirt, he threw it out the
window and made his way over to her.
“Wash!” stated Sue firmly holding out another hand to stop
his movements.
Rolling his eyes, Nick poured some water in the basin and
scrubbed his upper body with soap and water.
Drying off with a towel, he grabbed a new shirt out of his bag and put
it on.
The smell slowly left the car and her stomach lost the
nauseous feel. Putting her head back
against the chair, she closed her eyes in relief. Walking over, Nick knelt in front of her and gently brushed the
bangs off her forehead.
“Feeling better?” whispered Nick.
Nodding, Sue smiled, “Thanks, Nick. That’s the same guy that spilled that stuff
on my shirt on the way to San Francisco.”
Chuckling, Nick grinned, “I figured that part out from the
way he lit out of here when you asked for your gun. Come on.”
Picking her up, he carried her to the sofa and sat with
her on his lap. Leaning her head on his
shoulder, Sue sighed in relief at the absence of the smell. “Nick, next time, let me pick out the
cologne.”
Tilting her head back, he nodded and sealed the agreement
with a kiss.
Chapter 82
Heath waited anxiously on the platform of the depot for
the train to arrive. Seeing it rounding
the bend, he waved to Horace who stood in front of the hotel. Steam escaped as the train slowed and came
to a standstill. Heading towards the
private car, Heath grinned at the sight of Nick carrying a casted Sue out the
door.
“Need a hand with that package, Nick?” asked Heath with a
lop-sided grin.
“Very funny, Heath.” retorted Sue as Nick handed her to
his brother.
Holding her in his arms, Heath kissed her cheek and
smiled. “Good to see ya’, Sue.”
“You too, Heath.” whispered Sue wrapping her arms around
him and squeezing. “Thanks again for
everything.”
Heath winked as Nick jumped down to the ground with her
crutches and growled. “Heath, how many
times do I have to tell you to kiss your own woman?”
Setting Sue on her feet, Heath watched as Nick steadied
her on the crutches. “Afraid of some
competition, big brother?”
Drawing his brother into a hug, Nick laughed, “It wouldn’t
be fair, Heath. Great to see you.”
Getting the bags and package out of the car, Nick handed
the box to Heath. The couple grinned
widely as Heath looked at them and asked.
“This for me?”
“Yep. Go on, open
it Heath!” stated Nick with excitement.
“Thanks, but you didn’t have to get me anything.” replied
Heath as he set the package on a bench.
Heath opened the lid and pulled out the statue and whistled. “Boy howdy, this looks like Charger!
“I’m glad you like it, Heath.” said Sue quietly watching
the blue eyes light up with gratitude and love.
Nick put his arm over Heath’s shoulders and
whispered, “Just a little token of how
much we love ya’, brother.”
Putting the statue back in the box, Heath kissed Sue’s
cheek again and smiled widely when he heard a loud protest. “Get your own woman, Heath!”
Chuckling, Sue shook her head and started up the street
with the brothers walking beside her.
Looking around, she asked Heath, “I thought Jack was gonna be here with
the wagon.”
“He was delayed so I’m gonna buy you lunch at the hotel.”
stated Heath.
Nick shook his head, “I gotta get Sue down to Dr. Merar’s
first. Then we can have lunch.”
Rolling her eyes, Sue explained, “Dr. Swenson’s orders,
Heath. It shouldn’t take too long.”
“Doc’s not there.
He’s out delivering a baby over to the Jones’. He’ll probably be back later today, though.”
“Then you can buy us lunch, little brother.” smirked Nick
helping Sue up onto the boardwalk.
“Remind me to send Jarrod his gun back, Sue was gonna shoot some poor
salesman on the train on the way here.”
Heath held the door open to the hotel and let the couple
enter first. Putting the bags and
packages behind the front desk, the men followed Sue as she made her way
through the lobby and laughed. “I
wasn’t really gonna shoot him, Nick.
However, I might shoot you if ya’ try anymore samples of men’s cologne.”
“FOR PETE’S SAKE, HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO SAY I’M
SORRY?” bellowed Nick as he followed Sue into the dining room.
Looking back over her shoulder, Sue grinned, “Heath, I’ve never
smelled anything...”
“SURPRISE!!!” was screamed out by a multitude of voices as
the trio entered the room.
The guests watched a startled Sue pushed backwards into
Nick on her crutches. Nick seeing her
falling, caught her in his arms and heard the sharp intake of her breath when
landed on top of him. The unexpected
weight of the woman in his arms propelled him onto Heath, who lay stunned
beneath the two.
“Boss!” yelled Jack running over and helping the stunned
woman to her feet. Horace picked her up
and carried her to a chair.
Heath recovering from the shock of the landing pushed Nick
off with his hands. “Git off me, Nick.”
Hank grabbed Nick by the arms, helped him to his feet and
put his hat back on the stunned man’s head.
Jack pulled Heath up and checked him over. “You hurt,
Heath?”
“No, I’m fine.” grinned Heath.
Nick knelt by Sue and panic reflected in his voice, “You
okay? How’s the leg?”
Looking at him, Sue nodded, “I’m okay, Nick. I just hit my elbow on your gun.”
Relieved, Nick kissed the top of her head and stood as his
mother walked over to them. Kissing the
cheeks of the confused pair, she smiled, “Sorry we scared you. Congratulations on your engagement.”
Nick complained loudly,
“Mother, you almost gave us heart attacks!”
Sue stood up on her crutches and winked to the crowd of
faces, “Thank you all for the wonderful surprise. I’d say it’s good to be home, wouldn’t you Nick?”
Grinning widely, he winked at his mother and his family,
“Anything you say, dear.”
“I’ll never hear that again!” retorted Sue rolling her
eyes as the crowd laughed heartedly.
Nick leaned over and placed a lingering kiss on her lips
while the guests cheered for the happiness of the two they loved. Nick meandered through the crowd while Sue
opted to sit in a chair and accept the kisses, handshakes and well wishes of
their friends and family.
The evening wore on and Sue gestured for the sheriff to
come over. “Fred, I do believe you owe
me a drink!”
Fred nodded, “Okay, you were right. I’m buying!”
Leaning forward, Sue whispered, “You still got those
marked cards? We could take all the
Barkley money tonight.”
Laughing out loud, Fred shook his head and teased, “It’s
been so quiet since you’ve been gone.”
“Sorry to hear that sheriff!” chuckled Sue. “Fred, on your way to get the drink you owe
me, can you ask Dan to step over here for a minute?”
“Sure, be right back.” smiled Fred making his way to the
young attorney.
Dan Baldwin sat down in the chair beside her and smiled
widely, “It’s good to see you, Sue. How
long before the cast comes off?”
“Four months.” replied Sue and leaning over whispered in
his ear, “Dan, I had a nice talk with an Officer Michael O’Malley when I was in
San Francisco. It appears he knew a
young Danny Baldwin when he was growing up there.”
Dan he groaned, “Oh, lord! Of all the people you had to meet when you were there!”
Laughing, Sue teased, “So, tell me Danny Baldwin. How long did you get suspended when you ran
the teacher’s bloomers up the flagpole?”
Turning bright red, Dan chuckled, “A whole week!”
“That’s my attorney!” grinned Sue slapping him on the
back. “Did you get that little thing I
needed taken care of?”
“Ready for your signature.” stated Dan.
“Great! Thanks, Dan!” smiled Sue.
Waving off her thanks, Dan asked offhandedly, “So, what else did Officer O’Malley say
about me?”
“That, my friend, is for me to use against you as
blackmail later.” smirked Sue accepting a drink from Fred as Dan shook his
head.
“Sue, blackmail is against the law.” stated Fred
seriously.
“Fred, I’m just trying to keep you busy, is all.” Laughing with the two, she raised her glass,
“Here’s to coming home to friends and family.”
Chapter 83
Two weeks later, Sue smiled as she caught Charity’s
reflection in the mirror. Charity was
glowing radiantly in her intricately beaded silk wedding dress.
“You look beautiful, Charity.” grinned Sue.
Smiling back, Charity sighed, “I can’t believe this is my
wedding day, Suzanne.”
Putting her chin on her shoulder, Sue grinned at their
reflection, “You know old Jack is a good catch, don’t ya’?”
Laughing, Charity turned and hugged her maid of honor, “I
know, but thanks for reminding me.”
A knock on the door interrupted the two friends. Entering, Victoria smiled at the two women,
“Time to go ladies.”
With tears filling her eyes, she kissed her on the cheek
and whispered, “I love you, Charity and I’m so happy for you.”
“I love you, too.” whispered Charity her eyes filling with
tears.
Victoria held the door open to let Sue hobble past. Sue smiled widely at the handsome blond
waiting to escort her down the aisle.
Whistling, Heath grinned widely, “Boy howdy, you ladies
have outdone yourselves.”
Charity blushed at the compliment and replied softly,
“Why, thank you Heath.”
“You’re looking mighty pretty yourself, cowboy.” teased
Sue eyeing the black tuxedo he was sporting.
Laughing softly, Heath kissed both women on the
cheek. “Shall we?”
Standing beside Sue as they waited for the doors to open
after the Baldwin twins had spread the flowers, Heath leaned over and
whispered, “Jack couldn’t get his fingers to do the knot on his tie this
morning. I thought he was gonna pass
out, he was shaking so much.”
“Heath, I wouldn’t tease him too much about that. Your day’s coming in a month.” smirked Sue
her eyes flashing in laughter as the door opened and they slowly made their way
down the aisle together to the waiting groom.
Victoria smiled as she heard the sharp intake of breath
from her middle son when he caught a glimpse of his fiancee in the dress the
ladies had purchased in San Francisco.
The pale green satin dress with the tight bodice and flared skirt
complimented the flowers Heath was carrying for her. Her hair swept up in a french braid was accented with tiny roses.
Putting her hand on his arm, she whispered, “Sue’s
absolutely beautiful, Nick.”
Not taking his eyes from her, Nick whispered, “Inside and
out, Mother.”
Taking the small bouquet, Sue turned and leaned on her
crutches to face the aisle. Glancing
over at Jack, she smiled and was rewarded with a wink from her foreman. Scanning the crowd, Sue winked when her eyes
met Nick’s and he blew her a kiss.
Hearing the start of the processional, they reluctantly tore their eyes
away and watched as the bride floated to the front of the church and joined as
one with the man she had loved for over six years.
Chapter 84
The sun was just rising above the horizon as Sue hobbled
across the yard to where to Jose who was holding the reins of the buggy.
“Thanks, Jose. You
ready?” asked Sue smiling at the teenager.
“Si, Miss Sue.” grinned Jose.
Throwing the crutches under the seat of the buggy, Sue
pulled herself up and onto the seat. Lifting
the casted leg, she placed it on the edge and took the reins from Jose.
Maria came rushing out and ran up to the buggy, “Miss
Sue! We have no more sugar.”
Smiling, Sue nodded.
“Okay, I’ll get some. You need
anything else?”
“No, Miss Sue.” smiled Maria waving goodbye to the two as
they made their way to Stockton, talking and laughing.
Reaching town, Jose rode his horse to the school and
dismounted. Sue waved a greeting to
Sonja and headed to the store. Stopping
the buggy and wrapping the reins around the brake, Sue grabbed her crutches and
jumped down onto her one foot. Hopping
onto the boardwalk, she made her way into the store’s open door.
“Morning, Mr. Foster.
Two pounds of sugar please, Mr. Perkins.”
“Miss Weston, nice to see you.” smiled Mr. Foster. “Are the happy couple coming home today?”
“Yep. They’ll be
in around six on the train.” replied Sue.
“I bet Jack can’t wait to get back to work.”
Chuckling, Mr. Foster carried the sugar out and set it in
the buggy. Standing by the buggy, Sue
asked nonchalantly, “So, have you received any invitations in the mail?”
Wagging his finger at her, he grinned, “Uh, uh. You know I’m sworn to secrecy, Miss Weston.”
Rolling her eyes, Sue groaned, “Dang, I never imagined
Nick’d be able to keep his plans a secret this long.”
Helping her into the buggy, Mr. Foster handed her the
crutches. “Good things come to those
who wait.”
Smirking, Sue took the reins and replied to the smiling
man, “Well, loose lips sink ships. I just
haven’t asked the right lips yet.”
Snapping the reins, Sue drove down the street with his
laughter following her. Stopping in
front of the doctor’s office, she made her way inside for her appointment.
“Doc, if the bone doesn’t strengthen like it’s supposed
to, what then?” inquired Sue.
Leaning back in his chair, Howard looked into the green
eyes and said softly, “This leg will be
weaker than the other. It’ll be prone
to injury, you could have a limp and probably arthritis in it as you get older.”
“What about exercising the leg to build the strength
back? Won’t that work?”
“I am not ruling that out, however, you must prepare
yourself for when we take the cast off in three months.” advised Howard. “Only then will we know.”
Digesting his words, Sue heard a gentle voice whispering
in her subconscience, “We all bear
burdens in our journey through this life until we all meet in his kingdom. How we carry them is up to us.”
“Miss Weston?” said Howard quietly
Smiling, Sue nodded, “ I hear ya’. It’s better than being dead, right?”
“I’d say that’s correct “ smiled Howard helping her to her
feet. “Anything else we need to
discuss?”
“Ah, no doc.” blushed Sue rapidly making her way out of
his office on her crutches.
“I’ll see you in two weeks, then.” stated Howard as he
helped her into the buggy.
“Okay, thanks!”
called Sue heading for home.
Stopping at the ranch, Maria took the sugar from the buggy.
“I’ll see you later, Maria.”
Chapter 85
The sun had set and gone to bed when the Barkley family
heard a knocking on the door.
Opening the door, Heath smiled at the man who stood on the
steps. “Jack, welcome back!”
“Heath, is the boss here?” asked Jack frantically.
“No, she’s not here.
Why?”
“We can’t find her!” said Jack worry creasing his handsome
face. “She didn’t met us at the train and the last time anyone saw her was this
morning at the ranch.”
Hearing Jack, Nick was on his way to greet the returning
man and stopped in his tracks at Jack’s words, his heart pounding furiously.
Heath held onto Jack’s shoulder and spoke calmly, “Who saw
her last?”
“Maria. Sue
dropped off some sugar and said she’d be back later. Maria didn’t see where she headed.”
Nick nodded, “Okay, have you looked in town?”
“Yeah. Fred and
the twins are checking again.”
“Jack, was she on a horse or in a buggy?” asked Nick.
“Buggy. Riding
with the cast is too uncomfortable.”
Putting on their gunbelts and hats, the brothers headed
out the door with the frazzled man.
“Heath, get some of the men and we’ll split up. She’s probably on the ranch someplace,
Jack. The wheel could have broken on
the buggy or something like that.”
Gathering around at the beginning of the ranch, Nick
shouted. “Split off into two’s and when
you’ve searched your area, head to the Weston ranchhouse and wait.”
Nick and Heath rode together under the full moon to the
north side of the ranch. Heath shook
his head and grinned at the scattered phrases he heard Nick grumbling, ‘Only Sue
could get in trouble with a busted leg?’
‘She’s gonna drive me to an early grave.’ ‘When I get my hands on her.’
After delivering the sugar to Maria, Sue had headed out to
the furthest line shack to check the supplies kept there. Unable to ride and work the cattle with the
men, she had looked for other ways to be outdoors and remain as active as
possible with the ranch work.
Reaching the line shack and climbing out of the surrey,
she didn’t see the snake until it had embedded its fangs into her cast. Hearing the rattles, the horse bolted away
from the sound as the woman killed the snake with her knife. Her skin crawled at the sight of the fangs
and the feel of the snake as she pulled it’s head off her cast. “God, I hate
snakes!”
Staring at the fleeing horse and buggy, Sue groaned out
loud. “Dammit, I didn’t tell anyone
where I was gonna be.”
“Well, at least I’m not gonna die from a snakebite.” she
mumbled examining the indentations of the puncture wounds in the plaster.
Going into the line shack, she grabbed a canteen and
filled it with water from the pump.
Opening a can of peaches, she ate them before deciding she’d start
hobbling home.
Mumbling to herself, she set out on her crutches, “Just
had to check that shack today, couldn’t wait til tomorrow. Jack and Charity are gonna skin you alive if
you’re not there to meet the train.
Nice homecoming for them.”
Darkness started to close in and stopping on top of a
small hill, she tried to decide how to make her way down it. Leaning forward to get a better look at the
side of the hill, she lost her balance and fell forward. Rolling down, the canteen smacked her
forehead and she saw stars.
Landing at a heap at the bottom, she caught her breath and
looked around for her extra legs.
Crawling over to them, she gathered up the crutches and winced at the
pain in her casted leg.
Sue wiped the sweat off her forehead with her sleeve and
inhaled sharply when the material scrapped the bump on it. Sighing, she got to her feet and continued
back towards the ranch on her crutches.
Moving slowly, her arms and hands screamed in pain from
the crutches. Her right leg still hurt
from the small tumble down the hill and her mind screamed over and over, “damn
snake!”
Stopping, she leaned against a tree and closed her eyes to
gather her strength. Hearing someone
shouting, she heard her name being called over and over.
Hobbling out away from the tree, she waved her hand and
called out, “Here! I’m here!”
Seeing the riders wheel their horses towards them, she
smiled when she recognized the two riders.
Leaning on the crutches, she rested and waited for them to
dismount. Rushing over, Nick grabbed
her in his arms.
“Are you okay?” both brothers asked at the same time.
“I’m fine. Damn horse
took off with the buggy.” replied Sue.
“WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU DOING OUT HERE?” shouted Nick
angrily holding her by the arms.
“MY JOB, NICK. I’M
A RANCHER, REMEMBER?” snapped Sue pulling out of his hands.
“Whoa, you two!” stated Heath seeing them square off and
open their mouths. “Don’t say anything
you’re gonna regret!”
Sue closed her mouth at Heath’s wise statement and hung
her head in exhaustion. Nick closed his
eyes and took deep breaths knowing his little brother was right.
Heath grinned watching the two trying to control their
heated words and said softly, “Now, kiss and make up.”
Nick lifted up her face and tenderly kissed her lips. Frowning at the bump on her forehead, he
heard the whispered, “Don’t even ask.”
“I’m sorry. I was
worried.” explained Nick softly.
“I’m sorry, too.
I’m just tired and sore.” admitted Sue softly. “Can I get a ride home?”
“Be my pleasure, honey.” grinned Nick climbing on
Coco.
Heath handed Sue up and Nick wrapped his arms around
her. Putting her arms around his waist,
she snuggled closer and stifled a moan when Coco started walking. Giving into her exhaustion, bruised body and
pain, she closed her eyes and fell asleep.
Nick and Heath looked at each other as another moan was
heard from the exhausted woman.
Indicating towards Stockton with his head, Heath nodded in agreement at
his brother’s suggestion. Meeting Pedro
and Bill, Heath rode over to let them know they were taking their boss to see
Dr. Merar.
Chapter 86
Howard stared at the sight of Heath carrying the sleeping
Sue Weston into his office, with Nick walking behind. Heath gently placed her on the bed and stepped back. Talking quietly, Nick explained how they had
found her coming back to her ranch.
“Her forehead?” asked Howard examining her.
Nick shrugged, “She said not to ask. Doc, she covered at least eight miles on her
crutches before we found her.”
“Stubborn woman.
Just plain stubborn.” mumbled Howard while Heath and Nick stifled their
chuckles.
The brothers winced at the blisters Howard showed them on
the inside of her hands from the crutches.
Lifting her cast to study the plaster caused Sue to moan and open her
eyes. Exhaustion still reflecting on
her face now mixed with irritation.
“I said home, Nick!” groaned Sue eyeing the man messing
with her leg.
Howard frowned and shook his finger at her, “What did you
do to this plaster?”
“Doc, I can’t help it if a snake bit it and I fell down a
hill.” stammered Sue.
“A SNAKE BIT YOU!” exclaimed Nick loudly, “WHY DIDN’T YOU TELL US?”
“Nick, the snake bit the cast, not me.” explained Sue
patiently.
Looking up at the ceiling and waving his arms around, he
retorted, “OH THAT MAKES ME FEEL SO MUCH BETTER! I DON’T KNOW WHY I WAS SO WORRIED!”
Heath chuckled when Sue rolled her eyes. Howard examined the plaster and groaned,
“I’m gonna have to replace this plaster.
It’s cracked. That’s why your
leg hurts, it’s not holding the bone in place like it should. After that, I’ll put some salve on your
blisters and wrap your hands. Now, do
you feel dizzy?”
“No, just tired and beat up on.” smirked Sue watching
Nick’s face turn red. “Let’s get it
over with doc.”
“Nick, you and Heath will have to help me since my wife’s
out of town. Heath, come with me and we’ll
get what we need.” said Howard.
Sitting beside her on the bed, Nick caressed her cheek and
whispered softly, “I was worried about you.
Jack was frantic when he couldn’t find you.”
“I’m sorry, Nick. I
don’t mean to worry you and everyone else.” whispered Sue with tears filling
the guilt ridden eyes.
“Shhh, don’t cry.” said Nick softly. “It’ll be alright.”
Wiping her eyes, Sue nodded, “I really didn’t mean it when
I said you were beating up on me, Nick.
I’m just so tired from today.”
Kissing her softly, Nick smiled, “Dr. Merar will fix you
up good as new. Then we’ll have to talk
about you riding alone in a buggy until your leg heals, okay?”
“Okay.” whispered Sue in agreement.
“After all, wouldn’t you like the cast to be off when you
walk down the aisle?” inquired Nick innocently watching the green eyes light up
with excitement.
“When would that be, Mr. Barkley?” asked Sue eagerly.
Brushing his lips against hers, Nick tasted the sweetness
of her lips and brought her closer to him.
Holding her in his arms, he claimed her lips and left both of them
filled with desire.
Looking into the shining emerald eyes, he smiled, “Miss
Weston, the date of our wedding.”
“Yes? The date
is?” asked Sue in anticipation.
“Is for me to know and you to find out on that day!”
grinned Nick.
Seeing the eyes shooting flames at him, he dropped her
back onto the pillows, jumped up and smirked,
“You didn’t actually think I was gonna tell ya’ now, did you?”
Pointing to the door, she shouted, “GET THE HELL OUTTA
HERE, BARKLEY!”
Laughing, Nick walked to the door and looked back at the
angry woman, “Honey, don’t forget to get a wedding dress now.”
Ducking into the hallway, the flying book missed him by
mere inches. Heath and Howard watched
the book flying by his head and grinned.
“Boy howdy, you must like living dangerously, Nick.”
sighed Heath.
Howard stood by the door and called. “Miss Weston, Heath and I are coming in,
don’t throw anything.”
Chapter 87
Victoria smiled at the sight of Sue sleeping in the wicker
settee on the porch with the calico cat curled by her side. The replastered leg lay on a stool beside
the settee. Walking up the steps, she
sat in the chair beside her and studied the sleeping woman while remembering
her exhausted sons’ faces at the breakfast table this morning.
“The doc clipped her wings until the cast comes off,
Mother. Dr. Merar said if he heard of
her leaving the ranch alone, he’d strap her to a hospital bed.” Heath informed his family while Nick
chuckled.
Filling his coffee cup, Nick smirked, “Her throwing arm
still works.”
Jarrod smiled at Heath rolling his eyes and asked, “Can we
assume from that statement Sue threw something at you?”
“Just a book.” stated Nick.
“Why’d she throw a book at you?” asked Audra curiously.
Nick grinned widely, “She got a little upset when I
wouldn’t tell her the wedding date.”
Victoria shook her head and replied, “Nick, I still don’t
understand why you won’t just tell her.
A lady needs to plan for these things.”
“Mother, all she has to do is get the wedding dress. I’m doing everything else with Heath’s
help!” gruffed Nick. “Besides, I want
it to be a surprise.”
Smiling, Audra nodded, “Well, I think it’s romantic. Can I help?”
Standing, Nick shook his head and laughed, “Sorry, no
girls allowed. Heath, I’ll see you
outside.”
“Okay, Nick.” replied Heath finishing his coffee.
Audra leaned over and whispered, “Please Heath, can’t I
help?”
“Sorry, sis.
Nick’s got everything under control.” drawled Heath kissing her on the
cheek.
Reaching over, Victoria gently shook Sue awake. Sue smiled at her visitor and sat up on the
settee.
“Victoria, it’s nice to see you.”
“Sue, I heard about your mishap. How’s the leg?”
Gesturing to the casted leg, Sue grinned, “It’s still
there! How about some coffee?”
“Sounds wonderful.” stated Victoria.
“Hold on, I gotta call my legs.” smirked Sue holding her
bandaged hands to the sides of her mouth.
“HANK!”
“Coming boss!” yelled Hank from the barn and came across
the yard.
Laughing, Victoria leaned over and kissed her cheek. “I was wondering how you were gonna use your
crutches with your hands in bandages.”
Coming up the steps, Hank nodded at Heath’s mother and
picked up his boss. “Where to, boss?”
“The parlor, please.”
Holding the door open, Hank carried her to the parlor and
set her down on the sofa. Lifting the
plastered leg, he placed it on a pillow on the coffee table.
“Thanks, Hank.” smiled Sue. “Can you ask Maria to bring some coffee in?”
“Sure, boss.” grinned Hank bowing briefly to the older
woman. “Nice to see ya’ again, Mrs.
Barkley.”
“You too, Mr. Bardo.” replied Victoria sitting by Sue when
he left the room. “Do you want some
help picking out a wedding dress, Sue?”
“Thanks, but I already have one, Victoria.” stated Sue
calmly.
Puzzled, Victoria said, “Nick said you still had to buy
it.”
Winking, Sue squeezed Victoria’s hand. “I bought it last year when I was in Texas
taking care of the disposition of the ranch.”
Shocked, Victoria smiled as what she said registered, “I
hope Nick knows how lucky he is.”
Laughing, Sue replied, “I’ve known for some time, I’d
either marry him or kill him.”
Hugging Sue again, Victoria whispered, “Can I see it?”
“Only if you tell when the wedding is.” stated Sue with a
hopeful look.
“Sorry, even I don’t know. Nick said he’d tell the guests the day before and you the morning
of.”
“Dang!” sighed Sue.
“He’s really keeping this a secret.”
“He sure is. Audra
wanted to help, but Nick stated no girls allowed.” chuckled Victoria watching Sue roll her eyes and groan.
Chapter 88
Pushing Heath’s hands out of the way, Nick growled, “Cut
it out, I can do it.”
Eugene and Jarrod watched their brothers struggle with the
tie, their hands shaking with the anticipation of the upcoming event.
“I don’t know why you’re shaking Nick, you’re not the one
getting married today.” smirked Eugene as Nick scowled at him.
Jarrod chuckled, “Maybe Nick’s thinking about his own
upcoming nuptials.”
“When exactly is that again, Nick?” asked Eugene with an
innocent look.
Rolling his eyes, Nick growled, “Why don’t you two make
yourself useful AND LEAVE?”
Jarrod and Eugene replied with more smart comments,
laughing harder as Nick growled more.
Heath grinned at the teasing between his three brothers.
Nick stood back and studied the tie, “Perfect!”
“Thanks, Nick.” said Heath. “Ya’ got the ring?”
Patting his pocket, Nick nodded, “Right here, little
brother.”
Jarrod pulled out his watch and opened it, “Eugene, we
better take our seats.”
“Okay, Jarrod.” replied Eugene walking over to Heath and
pulled him into a hug, “I’m happy for you, Heath. Sonja’s a wonderful lady.”
Patting him on the back, Heath whispered, “Thanks, little
brother.”
Clapping Heath on the back and putting his arm on his
shoulders, Jarrod nodded, “My sentiments exactly. In a short time, you’ll be an old married man, Heath.”
Nick watched the sweat broke out on Heath’s forehead and
heard the whispered, “married?”
Jarrod and Eugene chuckled at the nervous man and closed
the door behind them. Nick shook his
head, took out his handkerchief and wiped Heath’s forehead, “Just keep thinking
about the honeymoon, Heath.”
Taking deep breaths, he flashed Nick a weak lop-sided
grin, “Nick, if anyone said two and a half years ago that you’d be standing up
for me at my wedding, I’d think they were loco!”
“Two and a half years ago, I’d of thought the same
thing. We’ve come a long way since then
and I wouldn’t have it any other way, brother.” grinned Nick.
Nick watched the blue eyes shining with emotion as Heath
wrapped his arms around him, “Me either.
Thanks, big brother.”
Knocking on the door, Jack popped his head in and said,
“Time to go boys!”
Slapping Heath’s back, Nick smiled and whispered, “Keep
thinking about the honeymoon.”
Heath grinned, “I will.”
Entering the church, Heath and Nick stood side by
side. Nick scanned the crowd and his
eyes found the auburn haired lady smiling at him from where she sat in between
Hannah and Charity. Winking at her, his
heart pounded when she blew him a kiss in response.
Heath fidgeted with his cuff nervously, stopping when Nick
poked him in the back. Catching his
first glimpse of his bride, Heath’s breath caught in his throat and his eyes
teared watching her walk down the aisle towards him on her father’s arm.
Sven Sorenson proudly escorted his beautiful daughter to
the man who had captured her heart. The
look of rapture and love on the groom’s face shone for everyone to see. Tears of joy fell down Sonja’s cheeks as
her father kissed her and handed her to the young man whom her family loved
like a son. Taking a seat beside his
wife, he held her hand as they watched the union of the two young people who
had found each other.
Victoria held onto Hannah’s hand as the couple exchanged
their vows and dabbed at the tears streaming down her cheeks. Her heart bursting with pride and love. Hannah squeezed Victoria’s hand and dabbed
at her own tears with a worn handkerchief.
Closing her eyes briefly, she smiled knowing two other women were
watching from above and would be sending a blessing of their own down to the
couple standing in front of the altar.
Chapter 89
The next week, Jarrod looked up at the three men entering
his office and leaned back in his chair, “Good morning, boys!”
Hank and Horace nodded a greeting while Nick walked up to the
desk, “Jarrod, can you get these things when you’re in San Francisco?”
Taking the list from Nick’s hand, Jarrod scanned the items
and looked at his brother with a raised eyebrow. “May I ask what this is for?”
“It’s for the wedding!
Why else would I need crepe paper flowers?” snorted Nick in disgust at
the obvious answer.
“Did you ask at the general store if they had any?”
inquired Jarrod.
Rolling his eyes, Nick retorted, “Of course I did! Can you get them?”
Nodding, Jarrod smiled, “Shouldn’t be a problem, brother
Nick. So, did you recruit Hank and
Horace here for the wedding? I thought
you and Heath were doing all the planning?”
Hank grinned, “We’re building the..”
“DON’T TELL HIM!” shouted Nick. “HE’S A LAWYER!”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” scowled Jarrod.
“Jarrod, you’ll just keep asking questions about the
wedding. That’s what lawyers do, they
ask questions until they get answers.” explained Nick. “Hank and Horace are gonna help since
Heath’s on his honeymoon.”
Looking at his brother, Jarrod debated silently whether it
were in his best interest to continue the discussion. Common sense won out and he nodded, “I’ll bring the stuff back on
Saturday.”
“Great!” smiled Nick walking out of the office with the
two twins.
Putting the list in his wallet, Jarrod tried to
concentrate on the documents in front of him.
Shaking his head, he realized Nick was right, “If he were here right
now, I’d be asking questions trying to determine what he’s doing.”
Jack held the door of the office open and waited until Sue
hobbled through it. Walking beside her
on the boardwalk to the carriage, he shook his head and stated in a bewildered
voice, “I still can’t believe you’re doing this, boss.”
Stopping and looking at Jack, Sue smiled, “Jack, you’re an
equal partner now. I’m not your boss
anymore.”
“To me, you’ll always be my boss and friend.” said Jack
quietly.
Laughing, Sue turned and smiled at him, “I’m just a
partner and friend. Charity’s your boss
now or didn’t she tell you that yet?.”
“Very funny, Sue!” grinned Jack looking past her and
seeing three men leaving the mill and loading a wagon. Nick stopped when he saw them and
frantically waved at Jack to get her away.
Opening the door to the post office, Jack said, “Boss, I
gotta see Mr. Foster. Wanna come in and
say howdy?”
“Sure sounds great!”
agreed Sue entering the building.
Glancing down the street, Jack smiled seeing how quickly
the men were loading the wagon. Jumping
up on the seat, Nick slapped the reins and nodded his thanks as he passed the
man standing in the doorway.
Jack entered the building and frowned at Sue’s words, “Mr.
Foster, it’s okay. I never expected her
to stay away forever.”
“I’ll make sure she doesn’t cause you any problems, Miss
Weston.” stated Mr. Foster.
“There’s not going to be any problems. She’s your only child, Mr. Foster. You need to have her around you.” replied
Sue squeezing his hand. “Thanks for
considering my feelings, though.”
Smiling slightly, Sue hobbled past Jack and
whispered. “I’ll wait for you outside,
Jack.”
“Okay, boss.”
Making her way down the boardwalk, Sue wondered if she was
really as positive as she had sounded about the return of Jamie Foster to
Stockton. Throwing the crutches into
the surrey, she pulled herself up onto the seat, deep in thought.
Jumping up on the seat beside her, Jack put his arm around
her shoulders and said quietly, “That was awful nice of you, boss.”
Sighing, Sue nodded, “Somehow I don’t think Nick’s gonna
think it was.”
Kissing the top of her head, Jack grinned, “He loves ya’,
boss! Don’t worry!”
Rolling her eyes, Sue sighed, “It’s true. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”
Seeing the puzzled look on Jack’s face, Sue smirked, “Stop
calling me boss!”
Chuckling, Jack headed the surrey back to the ranch.
Chapter 90
Sonja smiled as she gazed upon her sleeping husband. Arriving at the Royal Hotel in Sacramento,
the two had only briefly left the room in the seven days they had been
there.
Leaning over, she softly kissed his lips. She felt his arms move and pulled her on top
of his hard body. Running his hands
over her back and buttocks, he moaned in pleasure as her tongue sought
his. Sitting up, she felt the object of
her desire and her breathing increased with the wildness of their
movements. Holding on tightly to each
other, they savored the closeness and love between them. Holding her on his lap, Heath’s lips teased
her with kisses from her neck to her breasts.
Pulling his head up, she kissed him deeply as their passion exploded
within.
Rolling them onto their sides, Heath tenderly kissed her
smiling lips. “Morning, darling.”
“Morning.” she sighed in delight as his hands continued
caressing her skin.
“Mrs. Barkley, what would you like to do today?”
“Hmmm.” said Sonja leaning over and nibbling on his
ear. “Well, we should see Frederick
Remington’s exhibit. His artwork is
incredible.”
Heath groaned as she ran her hand down his stomach while
using her tongue on his ear. Rolling
onto her, he delighted in the moans that left her lips as his tongue tormented
her. Unable to contain it, the aroused
couple joined again and met as one in each other’s arms.
Staring into her brown eyes, Heath chuckled, “If we keep
this up, we’re not gonna make it out of this room today, either.”
Sonja smiled wickedly, “We can go to a museum anytime.”
Pulling her into his arms, he smirked, “Then you can
explain to Sue why we didn’t go to see the exhibit. You told her we would.”
Sitting up and moving to the side of the bed, Sonja
sighed, “If you’d rather go to a stuffy museum, we will.”
Jumping up, Heath pulled her back onto the bed and pinned
her arms over her head with one hand.
Staring deeply into her darkening eyes, he said quietly as he ran his
fingers over her skin. “I love you,
Mrs. Barkley.”
Pulling her hands out of his, she pulled his lips to hers,
“I love you, too.”
Chapter 91
The candlelight dinner was over and the kitchen cleaned
when the couple headed into the study.
Opening the door, Nick pulled her to him and picked her up in his
arms. Pushing the fallen crutches
into the room, he closed the door with his foot and kissed her deeply. Her hands pulled his lips harder into hers,
their tongues meeting.
“I’ve missed you this week.” whispered Nick his hazel eyes
burning with desire.
Taking a deep breath to quell the fervent desire, Sue
whispered, “Me too.”
Laying down beside her on the sofa, they explored their
desires for each other with kisses and touches. Relishing in the closeness and feel of each other in each other’s
arms.
“Nick, I’m gonna tell you something and I want you to let
me finish before you say anything.” said Sue quietly.
Leaning on his arm, Nick nodded, “Okay, honey.”
Clearing her throat, she looked into his eyes, “Mr. Foster
got a letter from Jamie today and he was real torn up about it. She was begging and pleading to come back to
be with him. She’s his only child and I can understand him wanting to have her
close. He asked me what I thought and I
said I didn’t have a problem with her coming back.”
As she was speaking, she watched the hazel eyes widen with
surprise and then blaze with fury at the end.
Nick walked to the window and stared outside while his hands clenched
and unclenched at his side.
Sitting up, Sue watched the tenseness in his body and his
measures to control the anger that burned her from across the room. Turning, Nick spoke through clenched teeth,
“I can’t believe you said it was okay.”
“Nick...” said Sue softly.
“YOU AND HEATH ALMOST DIED BECAUSE OF HER!” shouted Nick.
Sue stated quietly, “Jamie may have been the catalyst, but
I was the one who decided to go through the mountains. It was my lack of thought that almost killed
me and Heath, not Jamie.”
“IT WAS HER PLAN TO GET RID OF YOU AND IT ALMOST
WORKED! I JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW YOU
CAN WELCOME HER BACK!”
Pulling her crutches to her, Sue hobbled over and stood in
front of the furious man and spoke firmly,
“I’m not welcoming her back.
She’s the only child he has and I don’t want to be the one that keeps
her from him. Nick, can’t you
understand that?”
Her tone was firm but the emerald eyes were pleading as
they looked into the hazel eyes.
Shaking his head, Nick terse whisper twisted her heart, “How can you say
she should come back here after what she did!”
Walking past her, he strode out of the house and she heard
the horse galloping away. Sighing
deeply, she poured a drink and sat at the desk. Sipping it, she stroked Nicodena’s fur and spoke to the purring
cat. “That went well, don’t ya’ think?”
Nicodena meowed and rubbed her head against her
mistress. Sue nodded her head, “I
know. He’ll be back when he simmers
down.”
Chapter 92
Heath helped Sonja down from the train and put his arm around
her waist as they were met by the family.
“Welcome back!” was heard while hugs and kisses were
exchanged.
Taking the bags, Nick and Heath put them in the back of
the surrey. Seeing they were alone,
Nick said quietly, “Heath, I need to
talk to you.”
“Sure, Nick.” replied Heath puzzled at Nick’s tone of
voice.
“Do you think Sonja will mind if we go for a ride?” asked
Nick.
“Only one way to find out. Wait here.” said Heath walking over to his bride. Whispering in her ear, she nodded and gave
him a kiss. Glancing at Nick, she
frowned at the look on his face.
“Victoria, what’s going on with Nick?”
Shrugging, Victoria replied, “I’m not sure. I think he and Sue had a fight, but he won’t
talk about it.”
“Those two are so stubborn, it’s a wonder they’ve survived
knowing each other.” smirked Sonja.
Laughing, Victoria and Audra walked beside her to the
surrey. Climbing in, Audra asked, “Did
you find out anything about the wedding?”
“No, I couldn’t get him to tell me.” sighed Sonja. “I tried everything I could think of, but he
wouldn’t part with the secret.”
Disappointed, Audra exclaimed, “If they don’t get married,
we’ll never know what Nick was planning!”
“Audra, let’s not jump to conclusions. I’m sure they’re still getting married.”
replied Victoria calmly.
Heath glanced sideways at his quiet brother as he
rode. Nick lost in his thoughts headed
to the lake and dismounted under a tree.
Following suit, Heath stood by his side and waited for Nick to speak.
“Jamie Foster’s back in town.” said Nick.
Heath’s surprise reflected on his face, “When did she get
back?”
“Couple days ago.
She sent her father a letter begging to come back. Do you know what happened when he got the
letter?” asked Nick.
“No.”
“Mr. Foster told Sue about Jamie wanting to come
back. Sue said she didn’t have a
problem with it! Can you believe she
said that after what you two went through because of her?” inquired Nick
incredulously.
Shrugging, Heath replied, “Nick, she was bound to come
back one day or another. Jamie’s the
only child he has. Did you and Sue
fight about this?”
“She talked, I yelled and then left.” admitted Nick.
Taking a deep breath, Heath asked, “When was that?”
Shifting his feet, Nick looked at the grass, “Bout a week
ago.”
“Uh huh. So, you
left and haven’t spoken to Sue in a week?”
“I was so angry at her, I was afraid I’d say something I’d
regret.” stated Nick.
Looking into Heath’s eyes, he said quietly, “I don’t
understand how she can say it’s okay, Heath.
I’ve thought about it and I don’t get it.”
Nodding, Heath flashed his brother a lop-sided grin, “I
expect it has something to do with her heart, Nick. Knowing how close Sue was to her own father, she’d feel guilty
if anything happened to Mr. Foster and Jamie didn’t see him. She loves ya’ Nick and she knows you love
her. Jamie being back in Stockton is
not gonna change that.”
“She’s not gonna be happy with me, Heath.” smirked Nick.
Clapping Nick on the back, Heath grinned, “Remember, her
heart’s as big as Texas. Besides, who
can really understand women?”
Hugging his brother tightly, Nick whispered, “I missed
you, little brother. Did you have a
good time on your honeymoon?”
“If you have to ask, we’re gonna have to have a talk
before you go on yours.” teased Heath ducking the hand that was swung at him.
“Come on, I gotta go eat crow.” groaned Nick walking away
with Heath’s chuckle ringing in his ears.
Chapter 93
Standing outside the corral, the men and Sue cheered Pedro
on as he rode the bucking horse. Flying
off onto the ground, Pedro lay stunned as laughter sounded and snide remarks
caught his ears. “Stop resting! Get back on that little pony!” “Slacker!”
“Quit playing around.”
Rising slowly, he bowed to his audience and dusted off his
clothes. Bill held the bridle and let
go when Pedro signaled. The spectators
watched the dancing between the horse and man.
The dust rising and clouding the air as the spectacle continued until
the horse’s last effort was expended.
Pedro rode the bay around the corral and Sue collected her
winnings from the twins. “Thanks,
boys!”
Hank and Horace groaned, “You’re welcome, boss”
“Jose, you got the buggy ready?” called Sue.
“Yes, Miss Sue.” yelled Jose.
Looking at the men, Sue smiled, “See you boys later for
some poker!”
Groans could be heard throughout the crew as she hobbled
to the buggy and climbed in beside the teenager. Laughing, Jose shook the reins and they drove out to the spot
they used for target practice.
Reaching the little knoll, Jose tied the reins to a fencepost and they
belted on their guns.
“Miss Sue, what track is that?” asked Jose pointing to the
ground.
Looking at the track, Sue replied, “Mountain Lion. It’s not a fresh track because it’s not as
defined around the edges. See the
direction it’s taking?”
“Si.”
“Heading back to the mountains.” informed Sue.
Jose followed her and listened intently as she pointed out
different things to him. He enjoyed the
time he spent alone with his boss.
She’d teach him things, talk about the future and listen to his
thoughts, his dreams. He felt in his
heart that she was the sister he did not have. Trusting in her, he would tell her things he’d never tell
another soul.
“Ready for some practice?” asked Sue watching the dark
eyes light up eagerly.
“Si, Miss Sue.”
Practicing for a half hour, Jose smiled and asked, “Can I
see the draw again, boss?”
“Can’t do it with this cast on, but how about you throw up
a can?” asked Sue, smiling at the
excitement on Jose’s face. “Fast is not
as important as accuracy.”
“I understand.” replied Jose. Holding onto his shoulder, Sue dropped her crutches, put all her
weight on her left leg and used her casted leg to balance while taking her
pistol out of its holster.
Jose picked up a can and threw it into the air. The six
shots almost sounded as one as she fanned her gun and the can flew different
directions in the air each time it was hit.
Sitting on his horse, Nick’s jaw dropped open as he
watched the performance being played out before him. Picking up another, Jose cheered as she repeated the performance
again. Jack and Heath grinned at the
shock on Nick’s face.
“Nick, you’re catching flies.” said Heath watching the red
climb up Nick’s neck.
“Did you see that?”
“I’ve seen her do that lots of times, Nick. I told you before, Sue’s real handy with a
gun.” explained Heath. “Her reflexes
are really fast.”
Smirking, Jack said quietly, “Don’t worry, Nick. She won’t shoot ya’. Well, at least, I don’t think she will.”
“I’m not worried!” growled Nick kicking Coco and heading
towards the two practicing. Shaking
their heads, Heath and Jack followed prepared to put out the fireworks that was sure to follow.
Looking up at Jose’s statement, Sue watched the three
riders approaching and felt her hackles rising, “Jose, can you bring the buggy over?”
“Si, boss.” said Jose hurrying to handle her request
unnerved slightly by the darkness of her face.
Leaning on her crutches, Sue waited as the men dismounted.
“Sue, I need to talk to you.” stated Nick receiving the
full blast of her fury from the raging emerald eyes.
Ignoring the dark haired man, Sue said quietly, “Heath, nice to see you’re back home. Jose and I were just catching up on his
shooting practice.”
“Nice to be home.
Sonja and I enjoyed the exhibit of Frederick’s. He gave us something to give to you.” Walking over, Heath kissed her cheek and
whispered, “Don’t throw it all away over a fight.”
“Thanks, Heath.” replied Sue with a slight smile. “We have some work to do before dinnertime.”
Hobbling to the buggy, Jose waited as she removed her
gunbelt and placed it under the seat.
Nick was routed to the spot where he stood, his heart palpitating at the
sense of loss he was feeling, his head reeling from the thought she may not
forgive him the words spoken from anger and concern.
Jack walked over to the woman and softly spoke to
her. “Sue, talk to Nick.”
“No, Jack. Not
now!” snapped Sue angrily. Handing her
crutches to Jose, Jack pulled her back from the buggy and yelled, “Drive
Jose! That’s an order!”
Unsure what to do, Jose sat staring at his two
bosses. Sue’s face was red with fury
and she was screaming at Jack, “WHAT IN THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?”
Letting her fall to a sitting position on the ground, Jack
scared the horses into moving by hitting them with his hat. “Take them back to the ranch, Jose!” shouted
Jack as the teenager brought the horses under control and headed back to the
barn.
Clenching her hands in anger, Sue yelled, “YOU’RE FIRED!”
Walking over to the brothers, Jack winked at Nick and
shouted back. “You can’t fire a partner.
Nick will bring you back to the ranch.”
“DAMMIT, JACK! YOU
BETTER GIT BACK HERE!”
Mounting, Heath and Jack galloped back to the ranchhouse
leaving the two alone on the range.
Chapter 94
Walking over, Nick sat on the ground by the furious
woman. He was only a foot away from her
physically, but emotionally they were miles apart. Sitting beside her, Nick gathered his thoughts. Picking up a blade of grass, he twisted it
in his fingers and spoke quietly.
“I never claimed to be the smartest man around. Sometimes it takes a while for things to
sink in. I should’ve come to see you,
but I was so angry. I thought I’d say
something wrong and drive you away from me.
In not coming to see you, I realize I may have done that already.”
Pausing, he glanced at her profile and sighed, “I’m not
saying I understand why you said she could come back. Because I love you, I don’t need to understand. I just need to be there to support you.”
Brushing a strand of hair back behind her ear, Nick
admitted, “The fear of what happened before is what made me so angry. That’s all I keep seeing in my mind. You and Heath fighting the pneumonia in
those ice baths. I’m afraid something’s
gonna happen and I’ll lose you.”
Watching the sun sinking in the sky, she listened to him
reveal his thoughts and fears. The
anger slowly subsiding as she pondered her own feelings and realized she was
afraid, too.
Looking at the horizon, she asked softly, “Do you feel
like you’re somehow waiting for the other shoe to drop?”
“Yeah, it does feel like that.”
“Me, too.” whispered Sue looking into the soft hazel
eyes. “Sometimes, I think it’s too good
to be true and someone’s gonna steal it away from me. Nick, I don’t wanna stand in the way of any child being with
their parent. I won’t be running away
this time if she does something.”
Cupping her cheek in his hand, Nick whispered, “You’re the
only woman I want to be my wife and grow old with.”
“You’re the only man I want, Nick. How come we’re so stubborn and argue so
much?” asked Sue. “Do you think that’ll
change after we’re married?”
Thinking, Nick smiled, “I don’t think so. I think we fight cause we have so much fun
making up.”
Shaking her head in disagreement, Sue replied seriously,
“Nah, it’s not that much fun.”
Looking at her in shock, Nick’s eyes lit up from the
unspoken challenge, “Really? So, this
isn’t any fun?”
Leaning over, he nibbled on her earlobe and placed kisses
down her neck. Working his way back up
her neck, he claimed her lips, his tongue teased her into opening her
mouth. Deepening the kiss, his fingers
ran his fingers gently over the front of her breasts. Her body quivered from the excitement his touch was creating,
her muscles losing their strength.
Sensing her weakness from the desires purging through her, Nick pulled
them both down onto the grass.
Holding her hands over her head, he kissed her into a
state of oblivion and wild frenzied desire.
Moans and gasps escaped her lips when his fingers reached under the
material of her shirt and lovingly caressed her. Running his hand on the silky skin of her leg, she groaned with
need when he continued his exploration under her riding skirt. Releasing her hands, she entwined them in
the back of his shirt as his touch carried her away into a land of forbidden
wanton desires.
Pulling his face to hers, she hungrily kissed him and ran
her hands over his hardened body.
Moaning at each other’s touches and movements until they fell back
exhausted from the wild outpour of passion.
Sweating and gasping for air, the sunset caressed them as
it slowly left the horizon. Leaning
over, Nick tenderly kissed her lips and whispered, “Did you have fun, honey?”
Pulling his lips back to hers, she responded with a
lingering kiss. Looking into the hazel
eyes, she whispered huskily, “I don’t care if I have to crawl, limp, run or hobble
down the aisle, Nick. We better get
married soon, cause I don’t know if I can control myself much longer.”
Picking her up in his arms and sitting her sideways on top
of Coco, Nick climbed up behind, held her tightly and whispered, “Soon, honey.
Soon.”
Nudging Coco to a walk, she pulled his head down and
kissed him deeply. Nick started Coco in
the direction of the ranch and returned the kisses willingly.
Chapter 95
“Okay, Sue.” said Howard quietly as Nick nodded his
encouragement to her.
Releasing a shaky breath, Sue whispered, “Here goes.”
Swinging her legs to the side of the table, she slowly
pushed herself off the table and stood up.
Taking some tentative steps, Howard watched her move around the room
with a critical eye. Nick wiped his eyes
and beamed proudly at his chameleon’s first steps out of the plaster.
“Feels weird, doc.” stated Sue. “I can feel a slight limp.”
Nick looked at Dr. Merar in surprise, when he said,
“Better than being dead, ain’t it.”
Laughing, Sue nodded, “Definitely!”
Gesturing for her to lay back on the table, Howard gently
ran his hands over the thigh. “The bone
doesn’t seem to have healed crooked. I
recommend walking as much as you can.
However, don’t over do it. This
leg will be weaker than your other and it will tire quicker.”
“I’ll be careful, Dr. Merar.” agreed Sue hugging the
man. “Thanks for everything.”
Startled, Howard smiled and patted her back, “Nothing
personal, but I don’t want to see either of you for a long time.”
Laughing, Sue nodded, “Deal!”
Walking over to her, Nick wrapped his arms around her and
held her close. “I’ll take good care of
her, Dr. Merar.”
“I know you will, Nick.” smiled Howard leaving the two
alone in the room.
Tilting her chin up, Nick brushed his lips against hers and
whispered, “Make sure you do what the doc says, honey.”
“I will.” whispered Sue.
“I’m gonna put my jeans on!”
Laughing, Nick waited for her to change and come back into
the room. “I kind of liked you wearing
skirts and dresses.”
“I told ya’ it was only temporary, Nick.” smiled Sue.
Leaning over, Nick whispered in her ear, “It was much
easier to feel your soft skin with dresses on, honey.”
Sue turned red and winked, “Too bad, Barkley. I need to get some supplies from the store
before I head back to the ranch.”
“I’ll walk you up there.” said Nick offering her his arm
with a wide smile.
Stopping at the entrance to the store, Nick tenderly
kissed her goodbye. Sue ordered her
supplies and walked to the buggy and drove it to the front of the store. Mr. Perkins carried the order out and placed
it in the buggy.
Seeing the sheriff across the street, Sue went over and
greeted him, “Hi Fred!”
“Sue, nice to see you with the cast off.” smiled Fred.
“Feels great.” replied Sue. “You haven’t been out for supper lately, how about tonight?”
“Sounds good. What
time?”
“Six, okay?” asked Sue.
“Perfect.” said Fred.
“I can’t wait to have some of Maria’s cooking.”
Sue and Fred turned at the loud voice coming from down the
street, “For Pete’s sake, get out of the way, Jamie!”
Fred grabbed Sue’s arm as she walked past him, “Don’t do
anything you’ll regret, Sue.”
“Fred, would I do something like that?” asked Sue
innocently. “Come with me if you’re
worried.”
Sighing, Fred followed Sue down the boardwalk. Jamie stepped closer to the man who was
backed up against the wall trying to stay out of the reach of her hands and
smiled, “Nick, I just wanted to say hi.”
Sue walked up and pulled the girl to the side. Reaching up, she pulled his mouth to her and
kissed him deeply. Nick wrapped his
arms around her and pulled her closer to him.
Breaking the kiss, Sue winked.
Looking at the girl glaring at them, Sue stated firmly,
“This is my man. Stay away from him or
I’ll drive you out of town myself.”
Walking past her, Sue pushed her backwards with her
hand. Jamie caught off guard by the
shove fell backwards into the street and landed in a puddle of water, mud and
horse droppings while a stunned Fred and Nick watched. Shrieking and gasping, Jamie stood up and
heard the laughter from the people on the street. Running down the street, she disappeared into the post office.
Nick held Sue by the waist, prepared to lift her into the
buggy. Looking into the mischievous
emerald eyes, he smiled, “Well, if I need help again fighting off a woman, I
know who I’ll call on.
“Anything for you, Mr. Barkley.” snickered Sue.
Kissing her tenderly, Nick grinned and helped her into the
buggy. “I’ll see you on Saturday, honey.”
Chapter 96
Thursday morning, Sue rode with Davey and Jose. The sun had not risen yet from it’s night of
sleep when the three left the ranch.
Feeling the warmth already in the air, they knew the day held a promise
of hot California temperatures. The
trip to Modesto was a spur of the moment event suggested by Jack. Jose was honored and excited to be riding
with his boss and the wrangler to Modesto to pick up two horses. It was his first trip on behalf of the ranch
and away from the town of Stockton.
Sue felt the excitement radiating from Jose as he rode
beside her. Grinning, she recalled the
look in his eyes when she asked him to ride with her. His mother realized the importance of the trip to her son and
felt reassured that he would be in the company of Miss Sue and Davey
Hinton. Even so, Maria had hugged him
tightly before he mounted. Jose and his
mother had never been apart before, not even for one night.
“Miss Sue, do you think mama’s gonna be okay?” asked Jose.
Nodding her head, Sue stated, “She’ll be fine Jose. Mrs. Franklin will be there to help your
mama feel less lonely without you there.
Mr. Jack was going to bring Miss. James out to stay at the house,
too. She’ll have lots of company.”
Satisfied with the boss’ statement, Jose watched the sky
changing colors from the sun rising to greet the day and warm the backs of the
travelers on their way.
Riding behind the two, Davey smiled when he remembered
laughing with the rest of the crew as Horace had relayed to them what happened
between the boss and Jamie Foster. The
entire bunkhouse was proud of the way their boss had dealt with her. The town citizens were still chuckling over
the dip in the puddle Jamie had taken.
When Nick Barkley had started courting the boss, the men
had watched carefully as any big brother would watch over a little sister. As time went on, they had all agreed that
Nick appeared to be the man that would capture her untamed heart.
Though, at times, even they had wondered if the two
stubborn and quick tempered individuals would find their way to becoming a
union of one.
The whole crew had eagerly volunteered to help in anyway
they could with the wedding plans. Nick
and Heath had gladly accepted their assistance. None of the men had fully realized how daunting a task planning a
wedding could be. Just the creating of
the guest list alone had raised the hair on the backs of their necks. All the bachelors involved concluded that
should they ever marry, they would have nothing to do with planning it and
would only show up the morning of their own wedding.
Knocking softly on the door, Nick heard footsteps approach
the door and quietly asked as it opened and closed. “You ready?”
“Yep.” said Heath softly following Nick down the stairs to
the kitchen for a quick breakfast.
Sitting at the small table, Heath poured another cup of
coffee, “Did Jarrod agree to handling the inviting?”
“Yeah.” stated Nick.
Grinning widely, he looked at his little brother. “I can’t wait for
Saturday.”
Flashing a lop-side grin, Heath replied, “It’ll be here
before you know it, Nick.”
Finishing their breakfasts and coffee, the brothers rode
over to the neighboring ranch. Reaching
the beginning of the Weston ranch, Nick looked over and asked, “Heath, do you
think Sue will be upset the wedding is not as large as Sonja’s or Charity’s?”
“If she was concerned about those things, she’d have
planned the wedding herself.” stated Heath.
“The only people she’d want there are the ones you’re inviting. The ones she cares about, not the society
mongrels as she calls them.”
Chuckling, Nick smiled, “Yeah, you’re right. I just want everything to be perfect.”
“Don’t start getting nervous already, you’ve still got two
more days to go.” smirked Heath urging Charger into a gallop drowning out his
brother grumbling response.
Crossing the river, Sue stopped Rio and dismounted under a
tree. Jose and Davey followed her and
climbed down. Loosening the cinches to
allow the horses to breathe easier, they sat down and enjoyed a packed lunch in
the shade. Davey and Sue discussed the
horses they would be bringing back.
Looking at Jose, Sue wondered at the thoughtful look on his face.
“Jose, what ya’ thinking about?” inquired Sue when Davey
went to take the horses for a drink.
Glancing over, Jose said quietly, “I was just wondering
something, boss.”
“Wondering what?”
“When you get married to Mr. Nick, where will you live?”
asked Jose seriously. “He has a ranch
and you have a ranch. You can’t stay at
both.”
“Good question, Jose.” replied Sue with a frown, “You
know, I haven’t even thought about that.”
“Miss Sue, you don’t know!” exclaimed Jose.
Putting a smile on her face, Sue leaned over and ruffled
his hair, “Nothing to get excited about, these things work themselves out. Why don’t you see if old Davey needs some
help.”
“Okay, Miss Sue.” smiled Jose walking over to help Davey.
Sitting on the log, Sue thought on the teenager’s words
and wondered to herself. ‘Damn, where will we live?’
Dismounting in front of the Modesto hotel, the three
travelers obtained two rooms for their stay.
Heading to the livery, they stripped their horses and groomed them
before finding the hostler. Jose
watched while his two companions checked over the horses and spoke with the old
man. Satisfied, the boss paid the man
and they headed to the nearest restaurant for dinner. Returning to the hotel, the three laughed and played cards until
they retired for the night, eager to be back on the trail at first light.
Behind the locked door of her room, Sue laid in bed and
couldn’t stop the mental conversation that was running through her mind.
‘Where does Nick think we’ll live? The Barkley ranch, of course. His ranch is larger than mine, but that
shouldn’t be the determining factor on where we’ll live.’
‘At the Barkley ranch, I’d have two sisters, three
brothers, a dear friend in Silas, a mother and no privacy.’
‘At my ranch, I’d have a partner, one sister, a dear friend
in Maria, five brothers, a nephew in Jose and no privacy.’
Comparing the two lists in her mind, Sue’s heart exploded
with warmth when she realized the answer was in the lists she was comparing,
‘No privacy at either place, but at one I’d have a mother! I’d have a mother!’
Snuggling deeper into the blankets, she smiled and sighed.
‘A mother.’
Chapter 97
Rising early, they ate breakfast and were on the trail
back to Stockton before most of the good citizens of Modesto had even thought
about waking. Davey and Sue each had a
rope wrapped around their saddlehorn with a new horse attached to the end of
it.
When the sheriff had described the horses to Jack upon his
return from Modesto, Jack initially was going to send Davey and Pedro to look
over the animals. However, realizing
that Nick needed his fiancee out of the way for a couple days, Jack had spoken
with Sue about going with Davey and taking Jose with them.
Knowing that Jose had never been out of Stockton, Sue
thought it was a good idea.
Riding along at a steady pace, the three were keeping an
eye on the darkening clouds that were dotting the horizon in the direction they
were heading. They watched the
lightning streaking across the sky creating a spectacular light show. The horses became increasingly agitated and
frightened at each clap of thunder.
Looking around, Sue turned off the trail and the others
followed. Reaching a grove of trees,
she shouted to Davey and Jose over the wind that was now howling, “I’m not
crossing that range with all that lightning.
This isn’t the best place, but we’re gonna have to stay here until it
settles down some, boys.”
Davey and Jose nodded their understanding. Climbing down, Davey ran a picket line for
the horses. Putting on their slickers
when the first large drops of rain fell, they explored the area searching for a
better place to wait out the storm.
Finding none, they resigned to hunching up their shoulders and tucking
their chins in to keep the wind driven rain out while trying to keep the horses
calm.
The two new horses were unbroken and wide eyed at the
sounds around them. One pulled back
sharply in panic when the boom of thunder shook the ground, its line broke and
dangled freely. Grabbing a hold of the
rope on the panicked horse, Sue struggled to keep it from bolting.
A burst of speed from the frightened animal caught her
unawares and she was propelled forward onto the ground. Davey and Jose watched helplessly, their
hands full with the other four horses.
The air whooshed out of her lungs and she was pulled through the muddy
ground behind the fleeing animal.
Opening her hands, she let the rope go and lay stunned on the ground
gasping for air.
“Boss! You okay?”
shouted Davey relieved when he saw her slowly climb to her feet and wave at
him.
Walking over, Sue was greeted by laughter. “What’s so funny?”
“Miss Sue, you should see yourself!” replied Jose trying
to keep the smile off his face.
Looking down and seeing the torn slicker, Sue groaned at
the amount of mud on her clothes from her unexpected ride. Reaching a hand up, she wiped her face and
sighed as it came away with mud on it.
“I hear in some of the big cities they pay a lot of money
for mud baths. You got one for free, boss!” snickered Davey while Jose laughed
loudly.
“Very funny, you two!” smiled Sue. “That horse is probably all the way to
Wyoming by now.”
Over night, the severity of the storm lessened a small
amount at a time. The three travelers
wiped the rain off their saddles and climbed on. Heading down the trail towards Stockton, thankful for the calm blue skies they
witnessed on the horizon.
Jack and Maria paced alternately on the porch watching the
horizon for the three members of their ranch that were hours overdue. Seeing the riders topping the small rise
overlooking the ranch, Maria went
inside and brought out Victoria.
“Where have you been?
You’re late!” called Jack when the three rode beside the barn.
As they neared the house, Jack caught a glimpse of Sue and
he exclaimed, “What the hell happened to you?”
Maria dashed off the porch and hugged Jose to her when he
dismounted. Jose speaking rapidly in
Spanish to his mother about the trip.
Climbing slowly off Rio, Sue said, “We lost one of the horses yesterday during
a bad storm and we couldn’t find it again.
I’ll tell ya’ about it after I take care of Rio.”
Grabbing her arm, Jack shook his head, “Davey can take
care of Rio.”
“It’s been a long two days for all three of us. I’ll do it.” replied Sue with annoyance.
Victoria came down the steps, held the mud streaked cheek
and said quietly, “Suzanne Weston, today’s your wedding day.”
Chapter 98
“Suzanne Weston, today’s your wedding day.”
The words tumbled around in her stunned mind as she looked
at Victoria in shock. Her heart was
pumping ferociously in her chest and a slight tremor ran through her body. With hands shaking, she nodded with a
dumbfounded look on her face and allowed Victoria to lead her into the house
with Maria following.
“Jack, can’t say I’ve ever seen the boss so shocked
before.” said Davey.
“I don’t think that’s the reaction Nick was hoping for.”
snickered Jack. “You and Jose look
beat. Get a couple hours sleep. I’ll take care of the horses.”
Maria hurried into the bathroom and ran the water for a
bath, pouring a generous amount of lilac bath crystals in the water. Sue came out of her bedroom dressed in a
robe, her hair, face and neck were streaked with mud.
Hugging the shaking woman, Victoria held her face and
smiled. “Don’t tell me you’re
nervous!”
“I can’t stop shaking.
It’s my wedding day.” whispered Sue.
“I can’t believe it’s actually happening.”
Kissing her forehead, Victoria grinned widely, “You and
Nick deserve every happiness life will bring you. Come on, you don’t wanna be late for your own wedding.”
Holding on tightly to her, Sue asked, “After we’re
married, can I call you Mother?”
“Nothing would please me more.” smiled Victoria watching
the emerald eyes well with tears. “No
crying now. Nick will have a fit if you
show up with red and puffy eyes!”
Laughing, Sue smiled and headed to the bath Maria had
started, to wash the remnants of her mud bath off. An hour later, Sue stared at Victoria from her seat in front of
the dressing table, and asked, “What do you mean I have to wear a blindfold?”
Bill stopped the buggy and lifted the blindfolded woman
down from the carriage and led her inside the tent handing her over to Sonja
and Charity. Victoria followed carrying
the wedding dress and shoes, Sue had chosen in Texas so long ago.
Seeing the buggy arrive, the Bardo twins lit the candles
and Jack entered another tent.
“Nick, your bride is here.” informed Jack.
Breathing a sigh of relief, Nick nodded, “Great! How’s everything look, Jack?”
Rolling his eyes, Jack groaned, “It looks fine, Nick. This must be the tenth time you’ve asked!”
Jack left to make sure everything was ready, again. Nick blushed while his brothers snickered at
him.
Heath stood back and admired his handiwork, “Perfect!”
Eugene smiled at his brothers and agreed, “This day is
perfect, Nick. I can’t believe you were
able to pull it off.”
“I had a lot of help, Gene.” grinned Nick. “I can tell you this, I’m never planning a
wedding again.”
Jarrod handed out the drinks he had poured and lifted his
glass in a salute. “To our brother,
who’s about to be joined in marriage with a woman who is as beautiful inside as
she is outside.”
“I’m a lucky man.” agreed Nick with a grin.
Winking at Heath, Jarrod continued his salute. “A woman who can be thankful and reassured
that her soon to be husband has the occupation of Wedding Planner to fall back
on should they fall into hard times.”
“VERY FUNNY, PAPPY!” shouted Nick and then groaning as his
younger brothers joined in the teasing.
The women smiled at each other and admired the bride
before them. The wedding dress was made
of silk. The bodice was intertwined
with beads and dainty lace, the neckline was rounded and reflected just a hint
of cleavage. The sleeves of the dress were
short and her slender arms accented by the long white gloves she wore. The skirt of the dress flared out and the
long train flowed behind her. A tiara
adorned the top of her head holding the long white veil in place. Holding her bouquet of white and pink roses
accented with baby’s breath, she tried to quell the shaking in her legs.
“Suzanne, you look beautiful.” smiled Charity while
Victoria and Sonja voiced their agreements.
“Thanks, Charity.” whispered Sue blinking back to fight
the tears that were threatening to fall.
“I can’t stop shaking.”
“Everyone’s nervous on their wedding day.” reassured
Victoria with a smile.
Looking at her friend, Charity frowned, “Suzanne, you did
leave your gun at home, didn’t you?”
Laughter from the women floated across the still air. The brothers grinned when they heard the
shocked statement as they walked by the tent to take their places, “OF COURSE, I LEFT MY GUN AT HOME. WHAT KIND OF QUESTION IS THAT?”
Chapter 99
Sue looked up in surprise and anticipation at the others
when the sound of music floated into the tent.
Stepping inside the tent, Bill walked over and kissed her cheeks. “You ready, boss?”
“Yes.” whispered Sue tightly squeezing the arm he
offered.
Feeling the shaking of the woman beside him, he smiled
into her eyes, “I’m honored to be escorting you today, Sue. Your father would’ve been so proud.”
“Thank you, Bill.” said Sue softly placing a kiss on his
weathered cheek. “There’s no one else,
I’d rather have walk me down the aisle.”
Jenny and Jessica scattered white and pink rose petals on
the white carpet running from the tent to the rose lined archway where the men
of the wedding party stood waiting.
Sonja and Charity walked slowly up the aisle in their pink dresses. Smiling widely at the anxious groom and the
men beside him.
The orchestra started playing the wedding processional,
the cue the Bardo twins were waiting for.
Each took a flap of the tent and held it to the side. Smiling widely as they heard the gasp from
their boss when her eyes caught a glimpse of the area before her.
The white carpet was lined on each side with candles,
flickering and lighting the pathway in the setting sun. Two Yaqui patio crosses decorated with pink
crepe paper roses and white ribbons signaled the start of the pathway. Seeing the sun setting and it’s colorful
rays caressing the water of the lake, tears filled her eyes from the memory of
their first date, so long ago.
Heath heard the increase in Nick’s breathing and saw the
nervous clenching of his hands when he glimpsed the woman walking towards
him. Heath poked him in the back and
smiled slightly as he heard a whispered, “Thanks, little brother.”
The guests watched Bill slowly escort the bride up the
aisle to the archway and stop. Tears
fell onto her cheeks when Father Martinez turned, kissed her veiled cheek and
asked the question, “Who gives this woman to be married to this man?”
“We do!” stated the happy members of her ranch crew.
Bill smiled and placed her trembling hand in the
groom’s. He squeezed the joined hands
before stepping back and taking a seat in the first row of chairs.
Under the setting sun, the family and closest friends of
the couple listened as they exchanged vows.
Lifting the veil, Nick smiled at the love shining out from the tear
filled emerald eyes and whispered in a husky voice before kissing the trembling
lips, “Mrs. Barkley.”
Holding on and deepening the kiss, the couple heard the sounds
of cheers and hollering reaching through the sound of the blood rushing through
their veins. Reluctantly breaking the
kiss off, Nick lifted her left hand and kissed the emerald and diamond ring. Turning, the couple kissed and hugged the
guests before Nick hurried her into the waiting buggy decorated with pink and
white ribbons.
Reaching the depot, Nick carried her up the steps into the
private car and pulled the shades on the windows and locked the doors. The train pulled out of the station towards
the secluded beach house he had chosen for the honeymoon.
Pouring two glasses of champagne, he walked over and
tenderly kissed her lips. Interlocking
their arms, Sue stared into the hazel eyes warm with emotion and sipped her
champagne. Reaching over, she took his
glass and set them on the table.
Taking off his suit coat, she slowly laid it on the back
of the chair. Untying the black string
tie, she threw it over her shoulder, his vest and crisp white shirt following
shortly after, her fingertips running over his hardened chest and stomach
before his dress pants and boots landed on the floor. Standing in front of his bride with his full glory exposed,
fingers trembling with excitement, he reached around her and slowly unbuttoned
the white dress caressing her skin as he slid it off her body and down to the
floor.
The laces of the corset were opened and he lifted it above
her arms. Leaning down, he tenderly nibbled each pink bud and she moaned in
response. Sliding her stockings down
her legs, he picked her up and held her in his arms, hungrily kissing the lips
that sought his. Running their hands
over each other’s skin, they tortured and pleased each other with lips burning
with passion and need.
Wrapping her legs around him, their gasps of fulfillment
sounded as one and they wildly gave into the need to feel the rushing throngs
of desire and burning within them.
Holding on tightly, they were afraid to let go once they had crossed the
threshold of the long awaited climax and lay in each other’s arms.
Pushing Nick onto his back, Sue sat on him and smiled down
at the sweat soaked man. “Darling, it’s
gonna be a long honeymoon.”
Reaching up, Nick stroked the sweaty cheek and grinned
widely, “Honey, it’s gonna be a long marriage.”
Laughing, she leaned down and kissed his lips, “With lots
of babies. I love you, Nicholas
Barkley.”
Sitting up and nibbling on her ear, he shifted her on his
lap and her moan of pleasure burned the flames higher as he whispered, “Lots of
babies. I love you, Suzanne
Weston-Barkley.”
