Chapter 53
Closing the door behind Dr. Merar, Heath
felt his strength suddenly leave him as the battle of the last three days
caught up with him. Leaning against the
door, he sighed deeply and ran his hands over his weary face.
Eugene watched his brother from the parlor
and made his way to him. “Heath, are you okay?”
Opening his eyes, Heath smiled slightly,
“I’m wore out, Gene.”
Eugene replied, “I know, big
brother. How about if I fix you a night
cap before you go to sleep?”
Pushing himself off the wall, Heath nodded
and followed Gene into the study.
Accepting the glass, Heath stood by the window and looked at the stars
in the sky.
“It’s good to finally see the stars
instead of rain clouds.” stated Heath quietly.
Walking over, Gene stood by his shoulder
and followed his gaze upwards to the heavens.
“Heath, I still can’t believe I’m going to be an uncle two times over!”
Chuckling, Heath clapped him on the
back, “Someday you’re gonna be a father too, Gene.”
“That’s a long ways off. I’m happy just being an uncle.” smirked
Gene.
Looking into his glass, Heath said
softly, “I was real scared for Nick and Sue the past three days, Gene.”
Gene thought at first his ears had been
deceiving him when he heard Heath’s quiet words and the emotions that were in
them. Heath was never one to share his
innermost thoughts. Gene had always
assumed that he told Nick whatever was going on in his mind because of the
closeness of the two. He had never
thought Heath would share those with him.
Putting an arm across his shoulders,
Gene smiled, “Heath, do you realize that I’ve only seen Sue a total of four
times since she and Nick were officially engaged until now?”
Puzzled, Heath shook his head, “No, I
never realized that.”
“Well, that’s it four times. Of course, going to college and studying to
be a veterinarian is taking up most of my time.” admitted Gene.
“Yeah, we’re all proud of ya’ Gene.”
stated Heath flashing him a lop-sided grin.
“Thanks.” smiled Gene and then a serious
look graced his young features, “Heath, after you came into our lives, I was so
jealous of you.”
“Me?” asked Heath incredulously.
“Yep.
You. Before you came, I was the
recipient of Nick’s attention when I was home.
After you came, well that changed it all.”
“Gene, when I first came here, Nick and
I had some real rough times between us.
It wasn’t a good thing to be the recipient of his attention.”
“Yeah, but you still got the attention
that I thought should’ve been mine.
Whether it was good or bad attention on Nick’s part, I felt like you
were stealing my big brother away from me.”
“I’m sorry, Gene.” whispered Heath. “I didn’t know.”
Waving his hand, Gene smiled, “Of
course, you didn’t know. I do have some
Barkley pride in me. Well, the day
before the festival I was out riding and I met Sue on the road to
Stockton. I knew who she was but hadn’t
formally met her yet. Being
neighborly, we sat on our horses and passed the time of day.”
Smiling, Heath said, “I thought you met
each other for the first time at the festival.”
Gene grinned, “Formally we met
there. Anyway, she knew I was going to
college and was asking all kinds of questions about what I was learning, how I
liked the school and stuff like that. I
knew she was a friend of yours and I was feeling a bit put out, so I started
asking her questions about you and your relationship.”
Shocked, Heath looked at his little
brother, “You didn’t!”
“I was just so jealous of you and
Nick. Anyway, she sat there and
answered all my questions. Looking back
on it now, I’m surprised she didn’t yank me off my horse.” smirked Gene with a
far away look in his eyes.
“Sue looked at me with a real serious
look and said, ‘Mr. Barkley, I will be keeping my eye on you to see if you are
really good enough to be the brother of my friend.’” stated Gene in a serious
voice. “Of course, I had to ask her
what she meant by that.”
“What’d she say?” inquired Heath.
“You may be a college boy and getting
lots of learning under your belt, but you still have a whole lot of living to do
to catch up to Heath. He’s smart in the
ways of the world, in the ways of men and those are things you can’t learn in a
book. You may think he’s moving in on
your place in the family, but mark my words, if you give him a chance you’ll
never regret having him for a big brother.”
“What happened then?”
“Then we rode off on our separate ways
and met formally the next night at the festival. Her words got me thinking about you and me, the family and the
future. After I went back to school, I
wrote her to let her know that I did heed her advise and gave you a chance to
be my big brother. She wrote back that
it was nice that I appeared to be learning something from all that schooling
and we have corresponded ever since.”
“You and Sue?”
“Every few weeks, we exchanged
letters. Through those letters I’ve
become as close to my sister-in-law as I am to Audra, maybe even closer. She really is a special lady, Heath and I’m
proud to have her and you in our family.”
Pulling his little brother into a hug,
Heath choked on the emotions running through him, “Gene, I couldn’t have a
finer family or a finer little brother.
Thanks.”
Clapping Heath on the back, Gene
replied, “No thanks are necessary, big brother. I’m the better man for knowing you. Now, let’s hit the hay.
This is a working ranch!”
Laughing the two brothers headed up the
stairs to their respective rooms, knowing their love for each other as brothers
was as strong as ever.
Chapter 54
The sun was shining it’s rays of warmth
into the room when Nick opened his eyes and smiled at the relaxed face of his
wife in sleep. Climbing out of bed, he
glanced out the window and realized it was close to ten. Thinking back, he couldn’t remember the last
time he had slept this late in the morning.
Looking down, he saw Heath, Eugene and Duke heading out of the
yard.
Laying down on top of the covers, Nick
watched his wife sleeping, resting his hand on her stomach and relishing in the
stolen moments of time. His hand moved
of its own accord from the gentle kick from his love child. Rubbing her stomach gently, tears of relief
and love filled his eyes from the fluttering he felt.
Nick saw the movement of his wife’s head
and watched her eyelids open slowly.
Drowsy emerald eyes meet love-filled hazel eyes.
“Hi there.” whispered Nick leaning to
gently kiss her lips.
Confusion spread across her face as she
looked around the room, memories of the buggy ride flashed in her mind and
panic filled her voice, “Audra fell out
of the buggy! She’s hurt!”
“Audra’s okay, honey.” said Nick quickly
cupping her cheek in his palm. “You
brought her home, Sue. Doc says she has
a mild concussion, but she’ll be fine.”
Her face relaxed as relief ran through
her. Sue rubbed her forehead and
coughed, “I remember now. I helped
Audra home, Mother sent Silas for the doctor and wrapped me in a quilt. I dreamt ya’ carried me upstairs.”
“I did carry you upstairs.” replied Nick
softly.
Seeing a look flare quickly in his eyes,
Sue asked, “What’s wrong?”
Taking a deep breath, Nick smiled
slightly, “You’ve been sick with fever for the last three days, honey.”
“A fever for three days?” repeated Sue
her eyes widening with fear. “The
baby!”
“The baby’s fine, honey. Strong and steady heartbeat.” assured
Nick. “How do you feel?”
“I feel weak.” admitted Sue with a yawn.
”I’m kind of hungry, though.”
Chuckling, Nick kissed her mouth firmly
and jumped off the bed grabbing his clothes from the chair, “I’ll see what I
can rustle up for you. Doc says you
have to stay in bed for at least a week.”
“Okay.”
Her quiet agreement to the doctor’s
orders caused Nick to stumble as he was sliding his leg into his pants. Looking at her intently, he finished
dressing, helped her up to recline against some pillows and sat on the bed, “No
arguments about staying in bed?”
“No.” whispered Sue quietly tears
forming in her eyes. “I don’t want to
take a chance on anything happening to the baby. For the next two months, I’m going to be extra careful and not do
anything reckless.”
Caressing her cheek, Nick smiled, “Sue,
you didn’t do anything reckless or wrong.
It’s not your fault you were caught in the rain and got a chill from
it. Sometimes things just happen.”
“Nick, what if the baby had died? I don’t think I’m strong enough to go through
that again.” replied Sue her eyes
falling down from his.
Tilting her chin up, Nick shook his
head, “Honey, you’d never intentionally hurt our child. You don’t have to shut yourself in this room
for the next two months. If you did that,
you’d be miserable. I don’t want you to
remember the last two months of your pregnancy that way.”
Closing her eyes briefly, Sue nodded and
looked into the concerned hazel eyes, “Okay, but I’m gonna stick close to the
house for the next two months.”
Smiling widely, Nick wrapped her in his
arms. “That’s fine with me. Now, what would you like for breakfast, uh,
lunch?”
“Eggs and toast.”
“Okay.” grinned Nick walking to the
door.
“No, wait! Ham sandwich.”
“Okay.”
“No, soup and a ham sandwich.”
Opening the door, Nick said, “I’ll bring
it up for you, but first I’m gonna get someone to sit with you.”
“Nick!”
Poking his head back into the room, he
smiled, “Yep?”
“And some cookies, too!”
“Anything else?” sighed Nick.
“Can ya’ bring me some of Audra’s
pickled cucumbers?” asked Sue.
Crunching up his face in disgust, Nick
winced, “Sure, honey. Be right back.”
Chapter 55
The two pregnant women of the Barkley
household were showing Charity and Jack the nursery after enjoying the
Thanksgiving feast prepared by Silas.
Sue sat in the rocking chair with Emily in her arms, enjoying the
sleeping baby and listening to the conversation going on around her.
Kneeling by the rocker, Jack whispered,
“Just think, boss. In a month and a
half, you’ll be a mother.”
Smiling, Sue nodded, “It seems like it
was just yesterday that we moved here from Texas. Now look at us. You have
your own family and I’m starting mine.”
“It’s a wonderful thing, Sue.” grinned Jack. “Do you need any help with Christmas shopping for your
in-laws? I know the boys would help if
you needed it.”
“Thanks, but Gene is going to pick up
the last thing on my list when he goes to Sacramento on Saturday.” stated
Sue. “Do you need some help?”
Chuckling, Jack shook his head,
“No. Charity already told me what I was
getting her.”
Nick stood in the doorway of the nursery
watching Sue rock Emily. The laughter
from her and Jack brought a wide grin to this face as he asked “What are you two up to?”
“Just catching up, Nick.” replied Jack
with a wink. “Since the boss can’t ride
to the ranch, it’s hard to keep that crew of ours in line. I was just getting some advise on how to
handle them.”
Rolling her eyes, Sue smirked, “Yeah,
right!”
“I really like the nursery.” smiled
Charity taking the waking Emily from her friend. “Suzanne, this looks like the same crib you put together for us.”
“Sue put a crib together for you?”
Laughing, Jack nodded, “I couldn’t
figure the directions out. It only took
the boss about three hours to do it.”
Pushing herself up from the rocker, Sue
edged her way to the open door with Sonja quietly following. Turning, Sue was stopped short of escaping
by Heath who stood in the doorway with his arms folded across his chest.
Looking at his wife and sister-in-law,
Nick shook his finger at them, “You cheated!
You two should be ashamed of yourselves!”
“No, we didn’t! You never asked if we put one together
before.” stated Sue firmly.
“She’s right, Nick. Neither of you asked.” said Sonja with a
smile. “So, we won fair and square.”
Jack and Charity looked at each other
puzzled by the two couples in front of them.
Sitting beside each other on the sofa in the room, they watched the battle
playing out in front of them.
“Cheating on your own husbands.” chided
Heath shaking his head in consternation at the two blushing women.
“Well, you don’t have to make it sound
so dirty, Heath!” retorted Sue.
“It was a dirty thing to do!” snapped
Nick.
Sonja looked at her friend and sighed,
“Okay, we’ll repay the bet.”
“No way!” replied Sue. “You two gambled and you lost. Same thing as if you bet on a horse
race. You take your chances when you
place a bet.”
“She’s got you there, boys.” interjected
Jack from the sidelines. “Gambling is
gambling.”
Nick rolled his eyes, “Easy to see which
side you’re on Jack.”
“Don’t pick on Jack, cause you know I’m
right.” smirked Sue.
Nick’s words were cut off by Charity,
“You all should be ashamed of betting against each other. I think we should go back downstairs. Mrs. Barkley will be wondering what happened
to us.”
Agreeing, Nick took his wife’s arm and
whispered in his ear, “I still say you cheated.”
“Sore loser.” whispered Sue laughter
sparkling in her eyes.
Walking by with his wife, Heath growled
to Nick, “Told you that bet was a bad idea.”
Chapter 56
The youngest Barkley son was on his way
back to Stockton, the gift his sister-in-law requested he pick up, tucked
safely away in his valise. Riding the
train, he tried reading but was unable to concentrate.
Looking out the window, his thoughts
turned to his family. He was on break
from his school for Christmas and headed back to his home after doing his
sister-in-law this one favor. Grinning,
he knew that Nick and Heath would have made the trip for her but they would not
have wanted to spend the time away from the ranch or more importantly, their
expectant wives.
In a month, he would be an uncle for the
first time. His heart swelled with love
and pride when he thought of his family.
Nick and his wife, Sue, had been through the burning fires of purgatory
together since their first meeting.
Soon, they would hold the little baby that was already fully entwined in
their hearts, in their hands. Four
months later, Heath and Sonja would be holding their own bundle of joy.
He and Heath had grown closer as
brothers. After helping Nick fight the
fever waging in his wife, Eugene had helped Heath on the ranch. During this time, Heath and he had found
time to talk and share their hopes for the future. Working alongside Heath, he could see the respect the men had for
him not as a boss, but as a rancher and a man.
His blond brother had worked hard at gaining their respect and it was
not taken lightly.
Sue Weston had been correct that day so
long ago, ‘if you give him a chance you’ll never regret having him for a big
brother.’ He had never regretted
letting Heath into his heart and into their family.
The quiet man’s place was so engrained
in the Barkley family, it was hard to remember when he wasn’t there. Soon there would be a new generation of
Barkleys to carry forth the tradition of family and run the empire that Thomas
Barkley had created.
The train slowed as it arrived in
Stockton, the sun setting in the west was treating the California citizens to a
spectacular color show. Taking up his
valise, Eugene jumped down off the train and headed to Jarrod’s office with a
shadow following him. He was home a day
earlier than expected and if his brother were working, he could catch a ride
home with him. Arriving at the
building, he tried the door but it was locked.
Turning around, he headed to the livery.
“Hey Gene!”
Looking at the man on the wagon, Eugene
grinned, “Davey! How you doing?”
“Doing just fine. You just get in?” asked Davey.
“Yeah.
I’m on my way to rent a horse since Jarrod’s not in his office.”
“No need to do that. I’m headed out of town, I’ll run you by the
ranch.” offered Davey.
“If it’s not too much trouble, that’d be
great!” replied Gene climbing up onto the seat. “How’s Mary Ellen?”
Snorting, Davey shook his head and
started the horses forward, “Don’t ask!”
Laughing, Gene and Davey traded stories
as they made their way to the Barkley ranch unaware a lone man was behind them
and galloping towards them, striving to reach the slower moving wagon before it
reached it’s destination.
Chapter 57
In life, they say there are no sure
things and no pots of gold at the end of the rainbows. They are wrong, there are two sure things
that will happen to everyone eventually:
death and taxes. Taxes can
slowly siphon the life out of you and with death, you can only hope it’s quick
and painless.
It is often said that confidence is a wonderful
attribute for a person to possess. A
person who exudes confidence finds others drawn to them as if they were a
magnet. Confidence bolsters oneself up
higher than most people around them.
Yes, confidence is a wonderful thing for the normal person. Confidence is a tool that can be used by
most people, but to a ‘confidence man’,
lying, stealing and cheating are better tools.
The confidence man uses his arrogance,
his brains and the confidence in his skills to lie, steal and cheat the
unsuspecting individual out of what is rightfully theirs. As if he were a magician, he uses slight of
hand techniques, mirrors and smoke to get his foot in the door. Once his foot is in, the rest of his body
follows. Like an eight-tentacle
octopus, his hands will be moving quickly and you won't be able to see what he
has done until he slithers away, his tentacles stop moving and the smoke has
cleared. By then, your money, prestige
and pride are gone. Sure, you could get
them back, but the damage to the psyche has already been done.
Eric Fletcher thrived in the underworld
of the criminals of society, a small group of people that fed on the miseries
and good fortune of others. At least he
did thrive there until the botched kidnapping of one, Nicholas Jonathan Barkley. Even now, he could not understand how the
Barkleys found out about his ill-fated partners so quickly. To him, it was an enigma that plagued his
thoughts, his schemes and weakened his confidence in the skills he relied on.
He had always prided himself on
planning, planning and more planning.
The groundwork he laid in the past had never failed him. He worked diligently at what he did, never
flying off the handle or by the seat of his pants. Planning, he knew was the ultimate key to success in his undertakings
and his escapes.
If one was planning to rob a bank, they
should watch the habits of the people employed there. What time did they leave home for work? What time did they arrive in the morning? Did they leave for lunch? Did they eat in the bank or outside the
bank? Were they happy in their lives or
were they miserable and looking for excitement?
People are creatures of habit. Someone’s habits could be learned if one
was patient enough to spend the time to secure the knowledge. A reliable and consistent bank manager was
better than a man who was given to spontaneous acts. A reliable person could be counted on to act a certain way, in a
certain manner. Spontaneous people
would only lead down the path to disaster.
Their habits were not hewn into wood, their acts more strewn about like
dust in the wind. You couldn’t plan
around spontaneity.
Eric Fletcher had planned thoroughly
before the kidnapping of Nick Barkley.
He had obtained as much information as he could on members of the Barkley
family and Suzanne Weston. Learning
from Ramona how the crew of the Weston ranch felt about their boss, he had
obtained information on those men as well.
He had gained his information from
financial records, newspapers articles and individuals who traveled in the same
social circles as the Barkleys. He had
traveled to Texas and gleamed information out of people about Suzanne Weston
without their knowledge. He gathered
all the data he could, reviewed and memorized it. He had thoroughly planned and yet, he failed.
His failure could have been blamed on
the rotting post Brad Mason had tied Barkley to. Mason had not taken the time to thoroughly examine the
post. If he had examined it, he would
have seen the rot inside of it. He
failed to do that, thus, Nick Barkley was able to escape.
His failure could have been blamed on
the fact that he joined with the siblings knowing of their revenge scheme
against Suzanne Weston. When emotions are
involved, sometimes the actions derived from the emotions take precedence over
thinking wisely. Thus, in the siblings
lust for desire they had shot Nick Barkley as he was escaping. In turn, Suzanne Weston had shot and killed
his sibling partners.
His failure could have been blamed on
lack of focus. When one was
participating in a criminal act, one should focus on one ultimate goal. He knew this and against his better judgment,
he let the lure of the payoff at the end convince him to join with the siblings,
knowing the revenge they sought was another goal that was added. Thus, there was not one goal but two. Henceforth, the focus of the criminal act
had been split when it should have been tunneled towards one goal.
Or was his failure due to not planning
properly? He had plenty of time to
consider his failure, review what had occurred prior to and after the bungled
job. He felt his planning could not
have been better, but still he had nothing to show for his months worth of
wasted efforts. Eric Fletcher was not a
person given to spontaneous acts of any kind, he believed in the constant and
the reliable.
‘Planning is the key to any successful
plan’, thought Eric Fletcher with a wry grin, his features masked by the beard
and mustache, keeping an eye on the man two rows in front of him. ‘Then, what the hell am I doing following
Eugene Barkley on a whim?’
Chapter 58
Amigo rolled eyes in response to the
gentle words that were being spoken to him.
The currycomb making its way across his body, creating a shine to his
coat. The hands on him were strong and
small. The movements quick and
sure.
Sue brushed the black and spoke to him
as if he could understand her. Her
voice low and soothing. Her belly which
had seemed to grow overnight protruded outwards. Finishing the grooming, she left the stall and sat on a bale of
hay petting Nicodena. The cat purred
its contentment and looked upwards at her mistress with half closed eyes.
This time spent in the barn was part of
the daily ritual the woman rancher had established to occupy her day. Rising, she would have breakfast with her
husband and brother-in-law. Afterwards,
she would see them off and help Silas clean up the kitchen.
When the rest of the family rose, she
would sit at the table and enjoy their company. Afterwards, she would spend time with Silas in the kitchen
watching him go about his duties and talk about life in general.
Before lunch, she, Sonja and Audra would
take a short walk to exercise her leg and get out in the sunshine of the cool
December month. Audra was excited and
anticipating the upcoming holiday. Her
vivaciousness always enlightened the day of the other two women. Lunch would be served to the members of the
family present and afterwards, the two pregnant women of the house would
indulge in a nap.
Feeling refreshed after the nap, Sue
would venture to the barn to groom Amigo and spend time with Nicodena. Ciego would keep a close eye on the boss’
blossoming wife. He looked forward to
the little ones that would soon be running around the Barkley ranch.
Sighing, Sue put Nicodena down and put
her hand behind her to push up from the bale.
Her movements stymied by the large belly. Frowning, she tried again but to no avail.
“Ciego!”
Rushing into the barn, Ciego stopped in
front of the red-faced woman. “Si, Mrs.
Barkley?”
Sue smiled slightly. “Ciego, I need some help.”
“What can I do?” inquired Ciego.
“I can’t get up.” groaned Sue
embarrassment flaring across her face.
“That I can do, Mrs. Barkley.” smiled
Ciego holding his hands out to the woman.
Grabbing hold of the large hands, Sue felt him lift her from the bale of
hay.
“See, not so hard.”
Laughing, Sue patted his arm. “Thank you, Ciego. I thought it was bad enough that I couldn’t see my feet.”
Shaking his finger at her, he replied,
“No, no, is not a bad thing. It is a
good thing.”
Sue nodded and smiled, “Thanks again.”
Walking slowly out of the barn, Sue
headed to the house to help Audra finish wrapping the presents for the children
at the orphanage.
Sitting at the table, the women were
surrounded by colorful paper, ribbons and bows. Victoria smiled as Sue glanced at the clock for the fourth
time. Her outgoing and active daughter-in-law
would fidget this time of the day.
Sonja on the other hand would knit or crochet to pass the time. Sue was unable to do these forms of
needlecraft even though they had tried to teach her.
Sue had to find ways to occupy herself
while keeping her promise to her husband to stay close to the house until the
baby was born. Her restlessness would
increase as the time drew near at the end of the day waiting for the men to
return from their work. Her eyes
containing wistfulness as they explained how they spent the day working. When Jarrod was home, she would help him in
the study by looking up precedence or laws.
Jarrod, however, was in Modesto completing his shopping for the holiday.
Putting away the wrapping supplies, they
carried the gifts into the living room and placed them by the decorated
tree. The house smelled of pine mixed
with cinnamon and nutmeg. Silas brought
in a silver platter and placed it on the table. Thanking him, Victoria poured the tea, handing each woman a
cup.
Glancing again at the clock on the mantle,
Sue set her cup down and walked over to stand by the window. The sun had set and darkness was covering
the land, but still no sign of Nick and Heath.
Feeling a gentle hand rubbing her back, Sue smiled at her mother-in-law,
“Mother.”
“Have you ever heard the expression a
watched pot never boils?” asked Victoria.
Chuckling, Sue nodded, “Yes, I have.”
“They’ll be here soon.” said Victoria
softly. “Something must have come up.”
Sighing, Sue nodded, “I know.”
Kissing her cheek and giving her a hug,
Victoria put her arm in Sue’s, “How about a game of chess to pass the time?”
Nodding, Sue let herself be lead into
the study where the chessboard was set up.
Sitting at the table, Sue tried to concentrate on the chess pieces
before her. The concentration of both
women dwindling with the progression of the clock hands.
“Sorry, Mother. I can’t seem to focus.” apologized Sue
walking to the french doors and staring at the stars.
“The boys should be home soon. I think I will tell Silas to serve dinner.”
replied Victoria squeezing the shoulder of her daughter-in-law.
“I’ll be out shortly.” smiled Sue before
returning her gaze to the outside for a few minutes longer.
Walking to the door, Sue gasped and held
onto a nearby chair.
“Mother!”
Chapter 59
The fence repair and round up of the
missing cattle had taken longer to complete than the brothers anticipated. Darkness had fallen hours ago as the crew
and the two weary ranchers stabled their horses and made their way to the
house. They stopped in their tracks at
the sight of Audra and Victoria helping a pale Sue walk across the foyer with
Sonja following behind.
“Sue!” exclaimed Nick rushing over to
take his mother’s place and Heath took Audra’s.
“Too early.” gasped Sue as the pain in
her back screamed again, clutching onto Nick her face contorted with pain.
“Ciego has gone for Dr. Merar. We need to get Sue upstairs and into bed.”
stated Victoria.
Picking her up between them, Nick and
Heath carried her up the stairs and placed her into the bed.
“Nick, it’s too early.” moaned Sue fear
widening her eyes, forming tears. “I’m scared!
Please stay with me!”
“I’ll be right here. Don’t be scared, Sue.” Holding her hand, Nick wiped the sweat off
her forehead. “It’s gonna be okay,
honey.”
Victoria sent Heath and Sonja to get
water and towels and closed the door behind her. “Nick, we have to get her into a nightgown. Then you’ll need to wash and get into clean clothes.”
Nick helped change his wife and grabbed
some clean clothes. Placing a kiss on
her forehead, he whispered, “I’ll be right back honey, I promise.”
“Okay.” whispered Sue.
Hours seemed to pass quickly to Nick and
slowly to his wife. Holding her hand,
Nick winced in pain from the squeeze she subjected it to when the pain hit
again.
“Look at me, Sue!” urged Nick placing
his face in her line of sight when he saw the panic flaring in her eyes from
the upcoming contraction.
Sweat beaded onto her forehead, her
breath coming in gasps as the pain flared and then subsided. Wiping the perspiration from her face, Nick
and Sue kept eye contact with each other.
The contractions coming more frequently and harder. The repetition of the exercises exhausting
the woman laying in the bed. Closing
her eyes and resting between each session, trying to replenish the strength
that was being drained from her. When
the pains started and she opened her eyes, Nick was there helping her through.
Neither noticed the arrival of Dr. Merar
from the focus they had on each other as another contraction came.
“I’m right here, honey!” Nick repeated
over and over as the pain worsened and then subsided again.
Sitting his bag down, Howard said
quietly, “Sorry I’m late. Nick, I need
to examine your wife. You’ll have to leave.”
“No!” stated Sue clutching onto her
husband’s arm. “Nick stays!”
Looking at the physician, Nick
smirked. “Sorry, doc. You heard the boss.”
Sighing, Howard nodded, “Okay.” Washing his hands, he checked her progress
and then listened to the heartbeat of the impatient baby.
“Doc, it’s too early.” said Sue in an
exhausted voice.
“Well, it appears someone doesn’t want
to wait til after the New Year.” replied Howard with a wink. “Just a few weeks early, but this is not
uncommon. You’re progressing nicely,
Sue.”
“If ya’ say so.” moaned Sue as another
contraction started and Nick urged her on.
Nothing in life had ever prepared Nick
Barkley for this moment. He had dreamed
of how it would be, but the dreams paled in comparison to the reality of this
moment in time. After eight hours of
exhausting labor suffered through by the side of his wife, Nick stepped outside
the room cradling his son.
Smiling at the anxious faces of the
Barkley family and Silas, Nick put his son into his brother’s arms as
tear-filled blue eyes met tear-filled hazel eyes.
“Heath, may I introduce your godson,
Colton Heath Barkley.”
“Nick!” called Victoria from the room.
The blood drained from Nick’s face as he
hurried up the stairs, leaving his son in the arms of his little brother.
Chapter 60
His heart was threatening to explode in
his chest as he burst into the room.
His eyes rapidly taking in the exhausted smile of his wife, her auburn
hair wringing with dampness from the sweat on her and the grin of Dr. Merar
before he looked down in shock at the second baby his mother placed in his
arms.
Pulling the shocked man out of the room
into the hallway by the arm, Victoria closed the door behind her. Wiping her tears at the sight of her sons
holding the babies, she smiled “Another boy.”
Nick was mesmerized by the tiny fingers
that had a firm grasp on his index finger.
“Two boys?” whispered Nick in awe.
“Is Sue okay? Can I see her?”
“She’s fine and no you can’t see her
right now, Nick.” said Victoria kissing his cheek and opening the door, “I’ll
let you know.”
Sonja stroked the delicate skin of
Colton’s cheek, the dark hair on his small head a contrast to the blond fuss
that graced the other head, “They’re beautiful, Nick. Do you have a name for your second son?’
Shaking his head, Nick replied, “No.
Twins? I can’t believe it.”
Heath whispered, “They’re so small and
quiet. Hard to believe they may be like
you one day, Nick.”
Nick smiled, “Yeah, I know…Hey, is that
an insult?”
Heath placed a kiss on his Colton’s
forehead and chuckled, “Would I insult
the father of my godson and his brother?”
Reaching over with his right hand, Nick
grabbed the back of Heath’s neck and gave him a little shake, “I should hope
not, brother Heath or you’ll have to answer to the mother of my twins.”
Sonja watched the love flowing out of
Nick’s eyes at her husband and felt her eyes welling with tears at the emotions
the big man was openly displaying.
Heath flashed him a lop-sided grin and a wink in response.
Clearing his throat when the moment
between the two brothers was over, Silas said quietly, “Mr. Nick. Mr. Heath.
Sheriff Maden is here.”
“Okay, Silas.” said Nick. “Silas, can you take son number 2?”
Smiling widely, Silas took the baby in
his dark gentle hands, “Looks just like you, Mr. Nick.”
“Thanks, Silas” grinned Nick while Heath
handed Colton to his wife. Heading
downstairs together, the brothers greeted the sheriff.
“Fred, you are looking at the proud
father of twin boys!” boasted Nick clapping their old friend on the back.
“Congratulations Nick! Wonderful news.” smiled Fred.
“Thanks! What brings you out here?” asked Nick.
Sighing, Fred frowned, “Well, it seems
we have a couple citizens missing.”
“What do you mean missing?” asked Heath
overcoming his shock first.
Twirling his hat in his hands, Fred
replied, “Davey Hinton went for supplies
yesterday afternoon and never made it back to the ranch. Jack found the wagon on the road to the ranch
with a busted wheel. Horse was gone,
but there was no sign of Davey.”
“That doesn’t make any sense, Fred. Davey can make the ride to either of the
ranches with his eyes closed.” stated Nick puzzled. “You said a couple citizens?”
“Jack found a valise in the wagon with
the initials of EB. He opened it and
looks like it’s Eugene’s from the veterinarian book on top of the clothes. We can’t find him either.” Fred informed the
stunned brothers.
“Eugene wasn’t due back til today.”
“He must have got back early and caught
a ride with Davey.” suggested Heath.
“Let’s get some of the men together and spread out, Fred.”
“Jack’s men are checking around their
ranch.”
Nodding, Nick agreed, “I’ll just get my
gun and hat.”
Heath held onto Nick’s arm stopping his
flight, “Nick, you ‘re not going. Duke
and I’ll take the men out.”
“Heath..”
“Nick, your wife needs you here. If Sue knows Davey and Gene are missing,
she’s gonna be mighty upset. I don’t
think that’d be good for her seeing how she just had two babies.” smirked
Heath. “You know how stubborn she is, Nick.”
Running his hands through his dark hair,
Nick sighed in defeat, “Yeah, you’re right.
I’ll just let Mother and the others know. You’ll send word as soon as you find out anything, right?”
“As soon as I can, big brother.” assured
Heath strapping on his gunbelt and giving Nick’s shoulder a squeeze before
leaving with Fred.
Chapter 61
Eric galloped down the road leading to
the Barkley and Weston ranches. He was
familiar with the area since one step in his planning of a job was to obtain
maps of the surrounding land and familiarize himself with it. As darkness fell, he slowed the horse not
wanting a repeat of the last time he tried to catch someone on the road and
missed his chance when they turned off.
Seeing the outline of a wagon a little further down the road, he made
his way to it smiling at the sight of the two men contemplating what to do with
the wheel.
“Davey, we can just walk to the ranch
and bring another wagon back.”
“Walk!
I hate walking. That’s why they have
horses.” grumbled Davey. Gene shook his
head and smiled slightly knowing some of the men on his family’s ranch felt the
same way as well as his older brothers.
“We can unhitch the horse and one of us
can ride to the ranch.”
“Yeah, now that’s better thinking
college boy!” smiled Davey. “Hey,
someone’s coming.”
Standing, the two boys greeted the
stranger who dismounted and looked at the wagon “Howdy, wheel break?”
Davey smiled, “Sure did. We were just debating what to do.”
Nodding, the man asked, “What did you
decide?”
“One of us will be riding to the ranch
for a new wagon.” replied Davey casually turning his back to the man intent on
unhitching the horse, seeing only darkness greeting him as the pain flared in
the back of his head.
“Don’t move!” stated Eric coldly aiming
the pistol.
The unexpected brutality from the
stranger caused Gene to still his movements and ask, “What the hell do you
want, mister?”
Smirking, Eric replied “I want the
ransom money that I should’ve had for your brother. Since I didn’t get it for him, I’m gonna get it for you two.”
Staring at third man from the botched
kidnapping, Gene felt the reality of the predicament run a cold chill up his
spine. Pushing Gene backwards with the
gesture of his pistol, Eric pulled the unconscious wrangler into the center of
the road and held the gun to his temple,
“Unhitch that horse and don’t try anything or Hinton’s dead.”
Hesitating, the wheels in Eugene’s mind
turned, stopping as the man sneered, “Doesn’t matter to me if I take both or
only one of you. You wouldn’t want to
try to explain his death to your sister-in-law, would you? Seeing as how fond of her crew, she is.”
“No.” replied Eugene coldly unhitching
the horse and cursing silently that he packed his gun in his valise instead of
putting it on before heading home.
Keeping an eye on the young Barkley,
Eric ordered him to put Davey across the back of the horse. Struggling with the dead weight of his
unconscious friend, Eugene was finally able to get Davey up on the horse. Gasping for air from the struggle, Gene’s
blood boiled as Eric said, “You know, if we run across your blonde sister maybe
she’d like to join us.”
Turning sharply, Gene shouted, “You stay
away from my sister or I’ll kill you!”
Laughing at the rage in his eyes, Eric
smiled, “I’ll do what I want and you won’t be able to stop me, boy! She’s just the kind I like, innocent and
pure. I can feel her now.”
Seeing red, Gene lunged and knocked the
gun aside propelling Eric back unto the ground. Punches flew wildly between the men as the scuffle ensued on the
ground. Scrambling for the upper hand,
the dust rose from the rolling on the ground, fists on flesh sounded in the
still night air.
Landing a solid right, Eric pushed the
unconscious man off him unto the ground and wiped the blood that was flowing
from his nose. Grunting in surprise at
the marks the young man left on his face and body, he threw him on back of the
horse and tied the hands and feet of both men.
Chapter 62
Nick stood looking at the door that
Heath and Sheriff Maden left through to start the search for Eugene and Davey,
a dark look gracing his handsome features.
Feeling a hand on his back, he turned and smiled at his Mother holding
Colton while Audra held his second son.
Audra smiled, “Nick, where is Heath
going?”
“We have to talk.” stated Nick leading
the ladies into the parlor.
Sitting on the sofa, Audra and Victoria
watched as Nick paced the room gathering his thoughts. Stopping, he sat on the coffee table in
front of them and took a shaky breath.
“Mother, Heath and the men are riding
with Fred. Gene and Davey Hinton are
missing.” said Nick quietly listening to the gasps of the two women.
“Nick, I think you better start at the
beginning.” stated Victoria.
Explaining what had brought Fred to the
ranch, Nick shook his head. “Heath and
I don’t think it’d be a good idea for Sue to know right now. Heath will send word when they know
something.”
“I think you’re right. We won’t tell Sue, but Sonja needs to know.”
agreed Victoria squeezing his hand.
“Now, let’s go see your wife.
Audra, can you make some tea and sandwiches for Sue?”
“Yes, Mother.” said Audra handing the
baby to Nick, wiping her eyes and heading to the kitchen.
Looking at the sleeping blond babe in
his arms, Nick sighed, “I can’t believe just a short time ago, I was ecstatic,
so proud and now…”
Standing with Colton in her arms,
Victoria placed a kiss on his cheek, “Nick, you have every reason to be
ecstatic and proud. Your wife has given
you two beautiful babies. Don’t feel
you can’t rejoice over this miracle of life.
Gene and Davey will be fine, I’m sure of it.”
Smiling slightly, Nick nodded and
followed his mother up the stairs to the bedroom. Entering, Victoria placed Colton in his mother’s arms and left
the room with Sonja and Dr. Merar.
Sitting on the bed beside her, Nick
placed a tender kiss on her lips. “How
are you doing, honey?”
“I’m tired but so happy.” replied Sue
with a smile.
“We make beautiful babies and they have
all their fingers and toes.”
Laughing softly, Sue caressed his
cheek, “Nick, what’s wrong?”
“Why do you think something’s wrong?”
asked Nick.
“Because your smile is not reaching your
eyes, darlin’. What is it?”
Shrugging, Nick smiled slightly “I was
real worried about you and the babies.
I’m a little tired too.”
Looking at him intently, Sue nodded, “It
was scary for me, too. But having you
there gave me the strength I needed.”
“I’ll always be there for you.”
whispered Nick kissing her lips again.
“I love you.”
“I love you.” smiled Sue. “We do have to decide on another name since
we have received this unexpected surprise.”
“Yes, we do Mrs. Barkley.” grinned
Nick. “Do you have any ideas?”
Gene grimaced and wiped his face on the
material of his sleeve. His stomach
hurting from the pounding it was receiving from laying across the back of the
trotting horse.
“Davey.
Davey.” whispered Gene trying to see the man beside him in the darkness
receiving a low groan in response to his whispers.
“Davey!”
Pounding like a sledgehammer made itself
known to Davey as he fought his mind to obey the urging voice whispering to
him. Trying to move his arms, he didn’t
know why they wouldn’t work. Nausea
became another companion to him as he lost the contents of his stomach.
“Davey, you okay?” asked Gene concerned
by the sounds and smells coming from his friend.
“What?” whispered Davey after several
minutes.
“You okay?”
“Happened?” was the agonized painful
whisper.
“It’s Eric Benson.” stated Gene.
“Who?” inquired Davey the orchestra
playing in his head preventing his mind from wrapping it’s thoughts around the
name. Unable to keep his eyes open, he
welcomed the dark hole he fell back into.
“The one that helped kidnap Nick. He’s after the ransom.” replied Gene. “Davey?”
No response was received from the
wrangler and the horses continued on their way to the location Benson had
selected. Letting his head fall onto
his arm, Gene let his thoughts wonder to his family and his friends on Sue’s
ranch.
‘I gotta get us out of this.’ thought
Gene knowing Davey was unable to protect himself in his current condition and the safety of his friend lay in his
hands.
If Eric Fletcher had been looking into
the eyes of the youngest son of Thomas Barkley, he would have been surprised,
maybe wary, at the determination and the sudden aging of the blue eyes at the
responsibility that had been laid at his feet.
Chapter 63
Before the sun was rising above the
horizon, Eric Fletcher was dismounting from his horse in front of the abandoned
house that had been the original holding place for Nick Barkley. Stretching his back from the long ride, he
walked back to the other horse. Lifting
the head of Davey Hinton by his hair, he noted the state of unconsciousness and
wrinkled his nose at the smell of vomit.
Cutting the rope that held the wrangler onto the horse, Eric pushed and
listened to the sound of the body hitting the ground with a thud.
Gene grimaced when he heard the sound of
Davey hitting the ground, thankful the man was already unaware and would not
feel the pain from the vile gesture.
Unable to see what Benson was doing, Gene listened to what he thought
was dragging. ‘Probably pulling Davey’
thought Gene waiting for Benson to cut him loose from the horse.
After several minutes had passed, Gene
heard his footsteps returning and felt the rope that was binding his ankles
cut. Eric pushed the young Barkley over
the side of the horse and when he hit the ground full force on his back, Gene’s
breath was stolen from his lungs. His
legs were free and his hands tied in front of him as he looked up at the man
holding the gun on him.
“Get up.” ordered Eric gesturing with
the pistol.
Rolling to his knees, Gene tried to
stand on his numbed legs. Pins and
needles pricking his legs when the circulation started to work it’s way
around. “Can’t, my legs are numb.”
replied Gene through clenched teeth.
“Get up, Barkley!” Lifting his leg, Eric
directed a kick into the ribs of Gene. Rolling over from the blow, Gene fought
the tears that welled to his eyes from the vicious kick, moaned slightly from
the pain, gasping for the air that had been propelled from him.
Snorting, Eric put the gun in his
holster and grabbed his shirt collar, pulling Gene to his feet. Eric held on tighter when the young man
stumbled on his wooden legs and the edges of his vision darkened when the young
wolf he found that he had cornered, swung his fisted hands into his groin area.
Roaring from the overwhelming pain, Eric
fell back and grabbed blindly at the pistol in its holster. Gene stumbled on top of the writhing man and
using his fists as one, he pummeled the face of the man beneath him. His fear, anger and desire to keep his
friend from harm spurring him on til Benson lay unconscious.
Falling onto the side, Gene’s body shook
from the rush of adrenaline and his breaths were coming in great gasps. Taking deep breaths to calm himself from
the burst of necessary violence, his hands shook as he grabbed the gun from its
holster and put it in his waistband.
Finding the knife, he opened it and held it between his boots. Working diligently, he cut the ropes off
his wrists and rubbed the chafed skin.
When his legs no longer felt like tree
trunks, Gene walked to the horse, bent down and grabbed the long piece of rope
that was laying on the ground.
Standing, he turned quickly at the sound behind him and screamed when
the knife pierced into his left shoulder.
Fred, Heath, Jack and the crews from
both ranches split up to search the area surrounding the broken down
wagon. Having turned the land the
Weston ranch lay on, upside down, the frustrated men had met the Barkley crew
on the road.
Designating the search patterns to the
crew members, Heath and Jack headed off with Fred. Fred having tracked men before, followed the trail of two horses
that led from the wagon. From what Fred
could make out around the wagon, one of the young men had been dragged to a
horse by the other, however, he couldn’t tell which one was hurt.
Keeping his eyes to the ground, Fred
used the skills he had learned in the past to follow the trail, hoping it would
lead to the missing boys. The ground
was not conducive to providing distinctive horse tracks and a light mist had
fallen early in the morning. The men
were relieved the rain had only been a misting and not a downpour.
Heath’s fear for his little brother and
his friend lay smoldering beneath the surface, scared of the condition Gene and
Davey would be in. He was relieved there were no pools of blood at the wagon
but one of them was hurt bad enough to have to be dragged to a horse. Anyone who was able to take two young man
away against their will was not one to be taken lightly.
Gene and Davey may not have experienced
as much as others around them, but they had been witness to what the lack of
decency in people could do. The two
young men had started a friendship when they first met at the festival. Both fair haired and blue eyed, both
possessed an extremely gentle soul and both still held a look of innocence
about them.
Sure, both boys had been in fist fights
but to his knowledge, neither of them had ever killed a man or even been in a
gun fight. Sighing, he wondered if when
push came to shove, could either of the young men look someone in the eye, pull
the trigger and take the life of another human being.
He knew that sometimes fate made you
experience things that were beyond comprehension and a person would act from
instinct. The instinct to live, to
survive would rise up and take over any conscience thought. They would cause a decision to be made
instantaneous and you reacted without even thinking about it.
He remembered the first time he had to
do that and how his nights had been haunted by the eyes for months
afterwards. Even in self defense, it
was a hard choice that was sometimes necessary.
‘I hope they don’t have to experience
that.’ thought Heath darkly.
Reining in Charger sharply, Jack and
Fred looked back, startled when Heath cursed loudly. “Fred, this is near when Nick was kept, you don’t suppose?”
Shocked at the possibility, the men all
looked at each other and without a word galloped towards the abandoned house.
Enraged at the beating he received, Eric
climbed to his feet and rushed towards the object of his rage. He thrust the knife at the unsuspecting back
and found the shoulder instead when Gene turned quickly at the sound of his
feet. The pain radiating throughout
Gene’s upper body was momentarily forgotten, his body receiving the full rage
of the man he had beaten.
The shock wave of the rage pushed Gene
backwards as they traded punches and he could feel his strength leaving him
from the blood that poured from his wound.
He grabbed the pistol from his waistband and screamed in pain from
Benson twisting the knife in his shoulder and replunging it again. His fingers tightened on the trigger, the
gun spurting a single flame. The grip
on the pistol loosening and his vision frayed when a curtain closed down over
his eyes, sliding limply to the ground.
Chapter 64
Audra entered the bedroom carrying a
tray with tea and sandwiches. Setting
it on the table, she smiled at Nick and Sue feeding the babies.
“Hungry, Sue?” asked Audra.
“Famished.” smiled Sue looking at the
food on the tray. Holding Colton up and
patting his back, the trio in the room chuckled at the large burp from the
little baby. “Sounds just like his
daddy.”
“Very funny.” grinned Nick patting his
own bundle.
Victoria and Sonja entered the room and
sat on the bed. “How are my beautiful
grandchildren?”
“Just finishing a little lunch, Mother.”
said Nick.
“Have you thought of a name for Colton’s
brother?” asked Victoria gladly taking Colton from his mother.
Sue smiled, “Dakota Zane.”
“Such a strong name for someone who was
so quiet and hidden.” stated Victoria.
Nick groaned, “Whew! What is that smell?”
Laughing, Sue shrugged, “One of your
sons, darlin’.”
“Oh.” replied Nick looking at his
mother, Sonja and Audra with a pale face.
“Does anyone want to hold Dakota?”
“I’ll take him.” smirked Sonja. “I need the practice, Nick.”
Sighing with relief, Nick handed Dakota
off and stood up. “If you don’t mind,
honey, I’ll just watch Mother and Sonja change the boys. Just in case, I ever need to do it.”
Rolling her eyes, Sue smiled, “Like that
will ever happen, Nick. You face turned
green at just the thought of it.”
“I’ve faced worse things than that!”
snorted Nick giving his laughing wife a kiss on the forehead and heading to the
nursery.
Wiping her eyes, Sue slowly climbed out
of bed and made her way to the table where her lunch sat. “Thanks, Audra.”
Pouring the tea, Audra smiled, “I’m an
aunt!”
“You sure are, Audra.” stated Sue taking a bite of a sandwich. “In four months, you’ll be an aunt again.”
Audra’s thoughts turned to Sonja’s
husband who was searching for Gene and Davey, the worry shining in her blue
eyes. Watching the expression of her
sister-in-law carefully, Sue asked offhandedly, “What’s Heath doing?”
“He’s with the sheriff..” replied Audra
cutting her words off as the blush crawled up her face.
Picking up her teacup, Sue frowned,
“What’s he doing with Fred?”
“I think they’re looking at a horse or something.”
replied Audra quickly looking out the window.
“You’re not a very good liar, sis.”
stated Sue. “What am I not supposed to
know?”
“I have to help Silas with dinner.”
whispered Audra standing and hurrying out of the room, away from the inquisitive
emerald eyes.
Finishing her lunch, Sue stood by the
window and sipped her tea. Her eyes
narrowing when she saw Nick galloping out of the yard on Coco. Looking around the area of the ranch that
she could see from the window, she couldn’t pinpoint what was gnawing on her
subconscience. Suddenly the thought
burst forth in her mind. ‘Looks like a
ghost town outside. What’s going on?’
Putting on her robe, she walked slowly
to the nursery intent on getting to the bottom of the mystery. Opening the door, Victoria and Sonja looked
up in surprise.
“Suzanne Barkley, you should be
resting.” admonished Victoria.
“What’s Heath doing with Fred and why
did Nick lit out of here like his tail was on fire?” asked Sue firmly. Her rigid posture advertising her
unwillingness to rest until she knew what was happening.
Seeing the hesitation in the other
women, she sighed deeply, “Mother, I’m not planning on leaving the house, but I
do want to know what’s going on.”
“Mother?” called Jarrod from downstairs.
“We’re up here, Jarrod. In the nursery.” called Sue to the returning
lawyer.
Climbing the stairs, Jarrod entered the
nursery and stopped at the heartwarming sight that greeted his sparkling blue
eyes.
“Missing?” asked Sue concerned.
Patting her hand, Victoria smiled,
“Heath will send word as soon as they
know anything. It’s best to keep
positive thoughts, dear.”
Placing the sleeping Dakota in the crib,
Jarrod whispered, “Mother’s right, Sue.
Let’s not jump to conclusions, after all, Gene and Davey are grown men.”
Sue stood by the window of the nursery,
staring unseeing into the late afternoon sun, unaware she whispered her
thoughts outloud. “How can two grown
men be missing?”
Startled from her reverie, Sue jumped
when Victoria touched her arm. “Sorry.”
“Sue, you need to rest. We’ll take care of the babies, please go lie
down.” urged Victoria.
Nodding, Sue stopped by each of the
cribs and went back to her room. Laying
on the bed, she closed her eyes. Gene’s
handsome face flashing before her in delight when she asked him to pick up the
last present for her.
Tears squeezed out from between her
closed eyelids when she realized if he hadn’t been doing her a favor, he
wouldn’t have been on the way home to the ranch and wouldn’t be missing.
The grinning face of Davey, the young
wrangler whose caring for the animals entrusted to him, spread to those around
him. Both Gene and Davey always
appeared to be more boys to her than men.
Not so much because of their age, but because of that innocence that
surrounded them and cushioned them from the harshness of the world.
Trying to stay awake, Sue succumbed to
sleep from the battle of the twins’ delivery that had exhausted her body.
Chapter 65
Eric fell backwards in surprise at the
burning of the bullet across his stomach.
Opening his shirt, he saw the crease embedded into his muscled skin was
red and bleeding. Climbing to his feet
above Gene, he looked down at the white face of the younger Barkley and shook
his head.
“You definitely didn’t act according to
what my research dug up. Part college
boy, part rabid wolf, I’d say.”
Picking up the smaller man, he slung him
over his shoulder and walked to the cabin.
Opening the door to an inner room cautiously and seeing Davey laying in
the same position, he walked in and dumped Gene on the only bed in the room.
Closing the door behind him, he stared
at his face in the mirror and poured water into the basin.
Cleaning the bruises and cuts on his
face, he felt anger rising from the damage to the asset he built his criminal
life on. His nose was broken and only
after it was healed would he be able to tell if it would be a hindrance to his
trade in the future. His lips cut, his
eyes blackened and the cut on his forehead was still trickling blood from the
blows Gene had delivered him. His ribs
tender from the hits to his body.
Sitting at the table, he took out a
piece of paper and pencil. Completing
the note, he checked the lock on the room once again and left the cabin. Putting the Weston horse in the barn, he
climbed on his rented horse and headed to the Barkley ranch to make his
delivery.
Twice he had to stop and conceal his
presence from the groups of men he saw.
Taking out his field glasses, he lay on a hill and watched three riders
galloping towards the area in the hills that housed the cabin.
Frowning as he made out the faces of the
three riders. Their fast riding
causing him to think they acted as if they were sure of what they would find at
the end of the trail. Wincing when he
absently rubbed his battered jaw, he lay still considering what to do.
“These Barkleys have to be the luckiest
bastards ever.” he mumbled angrily.
“Dammit, I’m not leaving without the money again!”
Urging Charger on, Heath knew somehow in
his very soul, they were on the right trail.
The fear that had smoldered in him from the start of the search was
threatening to breakthrough to the surface.
Riding through the meadow where Nick was shot, Fred took the point and
lead them to the area of the abandoned ranch.
Stopping on the outskirts of the ranch, the three dismounted and
spreadout.
Using the terrain as concealment, Jack
entered the barn and walked over to the horse in the stall. His heart pounding when he recognized the
animal. Standing to the side of the
open door, he waved to Heath who was slowly sneaking up to the house with Fred
watching from the partially fallen wall.
Looking into the windows not seeing anyone, Heath stepped to the front
of the house and called the others over.
Walking towards Fred, Heath stopped
abruptly at the darkened spot on the ground, feeling the ground as the other
two walked up. Holding up his fingers
for the other to see. “Blood.”
“Our horse is in the barn, but nothing
else.”
“Let’s search the house.” stated Fred
following the rushing Heath and Jack inside.
Heath took out his gun and shot off the
lock. Opening the door, the light from
the opening spilled across the bodies and the men rushed inside.
Kneeling by the bed, Heath squinted to
see his little brother’s injuries in the darkened room while Jack and Fred
knelt by the man on the floor. Cradling
Gene in his arms, Heath carried him into the outer room and laid him on the floor.
Opening his shirt, he took off his bandanna and held it against the
knife wounds. Fred ran out to his horse
and came back in with his saddlebags.
Taking out some bandages, they wrapped Gene’s shoulder.
Cupping the bruised face of Gene, Heath
looked up when Jack stumbled out of the room.
“Davey?”
Chapter 66
Jack was numbed to the very core of his
soul as he stumbled to the outer room.
He stared at Heath, his brain muddled and unable to focus. Heath’s throat tightened at the look on his
friend’s face. Grabbing Jack by the
shoulders, he asked, “Jack?”
“Jack!” shouted Heath shaking the
unresponding man.
Jack looked into the blue eyes of his
friend and choked out, “Davey’s dead.”
Pulling Jack into his arms, Heath felt
Jack grab his vest in his fists.
Fighting back tears, Heath heard
the agonized whisper, “He’s too young to be dead. How am I gonna tell the boss and the guys?”
“God, I’m sorry, Jack.” replied Heath
quietly.
Fred cleared his throat and stood up,
“We gotta get Eugene to a doctor.”
Jack wiped his eyes, “Heath, you and
Fred take Gene to Stockton. I’ll bring
Davey home.”
“Okay, Jack.” agreed Heath quietly
squeezing the man’s shoulder. “After we
get Gene to the doctor, I’ll ride to the ranch and tell Sue.”
Fred brought the horses up to the
house. Heath climbed up and they handed
Gene up to him. Heath leaned his little
brother back against him, worried by the lack of color in his face and the
unconscious state he was in. Jack
looked up into the worried blue eyes and stated firmly, “We’re not losing both
of them, Heath. Eugene will be fine, I
know it.”
Taking a deep breath, Heath turned
Charger and nudged him to a trot with Fred following. Walking back into the room where his young wrangler and friend
took his last breath, Jack let the sobs of grief wrack his body while he gently
wrapped the young man in a blanket.
Nick galloped from the ranch, intent on
joining the search for Davey and Eugene knowing his wife was in good hands at
the house. He met up with Duke and the
Bardo twins on the way to the wagon.
More search parties arrived at the wagon where the men were last known
to be, returning empty handed.
Frustration was as thick as a blanket in the atmosphere around
them.
Talking to Duke, Nick slapped his gloves
against his black jeans and stalked around in a circle. “Duke, who hasn’t returned yet?”
“Pedro, Bill and Tony. Heath, Jack and the sheriff.”
“Riders coming!” called Hank pointing to
the three men riding up.
Bill stopped in front of Nick and
dismounted, “Nick, Heath and the sheriff are on their way to Stockton with
Gene. He’s got a bad knife wound.”
The hope that appeared on Nick’s face
faded at the look in Bill’s eyes, “Davey?”
Shaking his head, Bill said quietly, “He didn’t make it. Jack’s bringing him home.”
Curses of disbelief mixed with cries of
sorrow and anger could be heard through the group of searchers. Nick took a shaky breath and asked, “Did
anyone tell Sue, yet?”
“No, Heath was planning on telling her after
they got your brother to the doctor.” explained Bill.
“Duke, meet Heath at Dr. Merar’s and
have him stay there. I’ll head to the
ranch and let them know.” said Nick quietly.
Giving his condolences to the men of
Sue’s crew, he climbed up on Coco and headed back to the ranch. His heart heavy from the news of the young
wrangler’s death, his anger flaring and building as he wondered who was
responsible for such a foul deed, concerned with his wife’s reaction to the
dreadful news.
Chapter 67
Darkness was falling as Nick quickly
groomed Coco and headed to the house.
Entering the parlor, he found his Mother, Jarrod, Audra and Sonya. “Where’s Sue, Mother?”
“She’s resting, Nick.” stated Jarrod
watching his little brother intently.
“Any news.”
“Heath and Fred are on their way to Dr.
Merar with Gene. Bill says he’s got a
bad knife wound.” said Nick with a sigh.
“I don’t know much else about the wound or the condition he’s in.”
“Thank god, they’ve been found.” sighed
Victoria looking at the relieved, smiling faces of the others. “Jarrod, hitch up the buggy.”
“What about Davey?” asked Sue walking in
from the foyer, stopping abruptly at the pain penetrating the hazel eyes of her
husband.
“Sue, Davey was killed.” said Nick
quietly.
Gasps greeted Sue’s ears as the words
penetrated into the happiness she had been feeling only seconds earlier
and her emerald eyes, overflowing with
relief at the news of finding Gene, quickly changed to shock and emptiness. Stepping back when Nick tried to take her in
his arms, she held up a trembling hand and whispered, “Don’t. Just don’t.”
“Honey..”
Everyone watched Sue turn and numbly
walk up the stairs. Glancing quickly at
his family, Nick followed his wife’s trail up the stairs. Reaching the nursery, he saw her standing at
the window feeding Colton and staring up at the stars with tears on her
cheeks. Grabbing the other bottle, Nick
picked up Dakota and stood by her quietly feeding the blonde baby. After the feedings and diaper changes had
been done, the boys fell asleep.
Taking her by the hand, Nick led her
into their bedroom concerned by the lack of emotion in her eyes. Tucking her into bed, Nick wiped the tears
from her cheeks, “Sue, I’m..”
“Night, Nick.” she whispered before closing
her eyes hoping it was all a bad dream.
After she fell asleep, Nick gently kissed her forehead and walked
downstairs. Silas informed Nick, the
family had gone to Stockton to be with Eugene.
Grabbing a bite to eat, Nick went back upstairs to his family.
When Sue woke a short while later, she
realized it was not a dream but reality.
Her friend was gone, his laughter stolen from this earth and displaced
to the heavens above. Heading down to
the kitchen, her hands shook as she tried to pour the milk into the bottles for
the twins’ feedings. Silas watched the
struggle she was fighting with her emotions from the corner of his eye. “Miss Sue, ole Silas help with da bottles.”
Taking the container of canned milk,
Silas squeezed her hand and said quietly, “Sorry ta hear bout Mr. Davey, hes a
fine man.”
“Yes, he was Silas.” whispered Sue. “Thanks for the help. I’ll go check the babies.”
Silas watched Sue leave the kitchen and
head up the backstairs, the slumped shoulders signifying the great burden she
was carrying. Nick stood in the nursery
watching his sons as they slumbered in their cribs. ‘One life taken, two just beginning.’ beckoned his thoughts.
Looking up when Sue entered the room,
the expression on her face twisted his gut.
Picking her up in his arms, she clung to him, unable to maintain the
check on her grief and the sobs wracked her body. Rocking his wife gently, Nick held her tightly offering all the
strength in his body and soul to the woman he loved.
The next morning Sue woke, surprised to
find herself in the bedroom and that only her side of bed had been slept
in. Putting on her robe, she opened
the door to the nursery and tears rose at the sight of her husband snoring on
the sofa, twin boys asleep on his chest.
Sitting in the chair, Sue put her elbows on her knees and her chin on
her clasped hands. She stared intently
at her three boys, locking the memory of this special moment forever in her
mind and heart.
Chapter 68
Two weeks had passed since the death of
Davey Hinton. Gene still weak from the
loss of blood and the wounds inflicted on him was recovering back at the
ranch. His physical body was mending
but the guilt of Davey’s death was overwhelming him. He felt he had not done all he could to save his friend.
Everyone had assured the guilt ridden
Gene he had done what he could in the horrible situation that had been thrust
upon him. Their words of reassurance
did nothing to work through the walls he built up inside him. His mind would conjure up the nightmares
that stole his sleep from him each night.
The dark circles under his eyes, telltale signs from the war of emotions
waging within him.
Christmas day was a somber affair at the
Barkley household, only the presence of the early twin gifts was the bright
spot of the day. When Victoria
unwrapped the delicate imported silk shawl from France that Gene brought from
Sacramento, the blood drained from Sue and Gene’s faces at the reminder of what
the gift had cost them.
Gene abruptly left the room and headed
outside. Jarrod jumped up to follow,
but Sue stopped him. “No, Jarrod, I’ll
go.”
“Sue, he won’t talk to you.” replied
Jarrod quietly, relaying his brother’s avoidance of her since he returned
home.
Sue shrugged nonchalantly, while her
eyes were determined, “We’ll just see about that, won’t we?.”
“Jarrod, let her go. Sue may be what Gene needs.” stated Nick
handing Colton to Heath.
Looking at his mother and receiving her
nod of approval, Jarrod sighed and sat back down. Handing Dakota to Nick, she smiled slightly and headed to the
foyer. Opening the door, she shrugged
into her coat and made her way to where Gene was standing at the corral,
staring but not seeing anything in front of him.
“How about some company?” asked Sue
quietly from behind him.
Expecting one of his brothers, Gene
stiffened at the voice, “I just needed some air and I don’t need any company.”
Laughing, Sue nodded, “Maybe I shouldn’t
have asked.”
“Well, you can go now.” snapped Gene the
guilt twisting his innards, the pain of his inability suffocating him.
Sue’s anger had been kept on a short
leash the past couple weeks. She was
angry with the man responsible for Davey’s death and the injury to her
Gene. Angry that no sign of Benson had
been found again. She was angry for
failing at her promise to Davey’s parents when she wired and he left Texas to
start over in California. The promise
to watch over their only son.
Gene’s tone of voice and dismissive
attitude, like he was royalty and she a peasant, caused the ever present anger
to boil over the top.
Sue kept the words to a low growl, “For a college boy, you’re not very
smart. You should know by now nobody
tells me what to do or where to go.”
“I didn’t ask you to come out here!”
retorted Gene turning and facing her, the anger causing his body to shake, his
blue eyes flashing.
“Yes, you did! You asked with those dark circles under your eyes and those
nightmares you have every night. Hell,
you won’t even hold your nephews!”
Gene felt her grab his arm when he
stalked past her, intent on leaving the area and the conversation. Shrugging out of her grasp, Gene stood face
to face with her and shouted, “I DON’T WANT TO TALK TO YOU, UNDERSTAND!”
Staring into the pained blue eyes, Sue
whispered, “Gene, I can’t lose you too.
It’s not your fault! If you want
to blame somebody, blame me.”
Gene stepped back and replied, “If I was
strong like Nick or Heath, I could’ve saved him. But I’m not and now he’s dead.
This has nothing to do with you.”
Chuckling, Sue stepped towards him and
smiled, “Gene, if you hadn’t gone to Sacramento for me, you’d have been home
already. Benson wouldn’t have seen you
in Stockton or wherever he saw you. You
wouldn’t have caught a ride with Davey to the ranch. So, you wouldn’t have been hurt and Davey would still be
alive. Benson was associated with my
stepmother. This has everything to do
with me.”
Gesturing wildly, Gene replied
sarcastically, “Nice try, I believe that’s called reverse psychology. It’s not gonna work with me! I know what happened and what I couldn’t
do. When I see a gun, I see Benson
hitting Davey! When I saw that present,
I remember our conversation on the ride to the ranch! I can’t forget it, doesn’t anyone understand that.”
“How dare you Eugene Barkley! How dare you insinuate no one else remembers
Davey when they see things! What right
do you have to think that?” snarled Sue angrily.
“You remember the good things, all I
remember is that I was there when he died and couldn’t stop it!” retorted Gene
his voice rising with each word.
Squaring off, the frustrated out of
control pair did not notice the audience that had formed on the front porch,
concerned at the body language they had witnessed from inside the house.
“I remember a man who had a wonderful
gift with horses, but couldn’t keep a girlfriend. I remember a man whose smile brightened the morning at the table
where we gathered for coffee before working.
I remember a man who thought of others before himself. These are the good things that I remember
about Davey.”
“SEE, YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND AT ALL WHAT
I’M GOING THROUGH!”
Grabbing Gene by the shoulders, Sue
shook him and shouted, “EUGENE BARKLEY, I REMEMBER THE DAY MY FRIEND DIED, MY
SONS WERE BORN! DON’T YOU DARE SAY I
DON’T UNDERSTAND!”
The air was still as the sound of the
angry words punctuated the atmosphere and the hearts of all those within
hearing range. Stunned, Gene was unable
to reply and stared at the trembling, pale woman before him.
Pulling her into his arms, Gene let his
tears fall and he tightened his hold when she tried to pull away, “God, I’m
sorry. Sue, don’t think that,
please! Don’t remember their birth that
way, please don’t.”
Tightening her hold on him, she
whispered, “Gene, we can’t turn back the clock. Don’t destroy yourself.
You tried, Gene. You did what
you could and that’s all anyone can ever ask for.”
After several minutes, Gene nodded,
wiped his eyes and released his hold on her.
Placing a kiss on her cheek, he sighed,
“Just so you know, I haven’t held my nephews because their dad is always
hogging them.”
Laughing, Sue wiped her tears and held
onto his arm as they walked back to the house.
“I’ll make sure you get a turn.
Gene, promise me that you will talk to me or one of your brothers
anytime you need to, okay?”
Agreeing, Gene hugged her again before
they reentered the house to continue the holiday celebration in the gaily
decorated house they called home, with a little less guilt shadowing their
souls.
Chapter 69
A tingling in the pit of his stomach
told Eric Fletcher he had stayed too long in one place. Something told him it was a sign he had to
stay in room thirteen, the only room that was unoccupied. He had a chill run down his spine when the
desk clerk informed him of the room number.
‘Thirteen, why couldn’t it be seven?’ he thought grimly signing his name
to the ledger.
Heading up the stairs, he stared at his
reflection in the mirror. The bruises
were gone from his unexpected violent confrontation with the youngest son of
the Barkley family. The only sign of
the fight was the lump on his nose from where it was broken. While it did not completely mar his good
looks, it certainly did not enhance them.
A scar on his cheek would have been
explained to a member of the lessor sex by a contrived story of heroism on his
part. A broken nose would not give
credence to any tale he spun. A broken
nose is after all, only a broken nose.
Nothing exciting in that, no tale could be spun to enhance that.
Laying on his bed, he went over the last
year of his life and realized that once he had taken up with Ramona Bouvier, he
had started down a path of self-destruction.
Had he known the lack of profit from the plans they’d made, he would’ve
turned tail and run from Ramona. But he
hadn’t and now he was stuck, his money almost gone and nothing to show for his
efforts.
The Barkley family, though battered from
the events of the past year, had withstood and were as strong as ever, as rich
as ever. Eugene Barkley lived though
Davey Hinton had died from the newspaper account he had read. His palms itched when he thought of the
money that was waiting in Stockton.
The thought briefly crossed his mind
that perhaps he should cut his losses and run from California. ‘No, I’m not leaving without something to
show for all my efforts. That damn
Barkley luck has to run out sometime.’
Sitting at the table in the room, he
poured a drink and stared out the window, pondering his thoughts. ‘Again, it all comes down to money. With that ransom money, I could leave this
country and go someplace where I could set myself up in style. Money is the root of all evil or so they
say. Guess that saying does apply to
me.’
Smirking, Eric downed his drink and
retired for the evening. Two days
later, he was outfitted and back on his way to Stockton, specifically, the hill overlooking the Barkley ranch.
Chapter 70
Fred Maden, Sheriff of Stockton and
protector of the citizens was frustrated.
He had spent the last weeks since the recovery of Davey and Gene
tracking Eric Benson by means of paper trails and witness accounts.
He was frustrated as he was a man
accustomed to tangible evidence, something he could see with his own eyes and
feel with his own hands. Not chasing
some papers down trying to find out where the man was when he saw Gene
Barkley.
The diligent, tenacious sheriff was on
his way back from Modesto where he had spent the New Year holiday with an old
friend. Starting out on the trail back,
his mind wandered over the case of Eric Benson and all he had gathered about
the elusive criminal.
Deciding to utilize the ride to rehash
the witness accounts, Fred pulled his notebook from his pocket and opened
it. Scanning each of the accounts
again, he stopped his horse and reread the account of the desk clerk at the
Cattleman’s hotel in Stockton.
Squinting at the words written sideways
in small letters on the margin of the page, he shook his head and mentally
scolded himself. ‘If you wrote clearer, maybe you would have seen it before,
damn fool.’
Putting the notebook back in his pocket,
Fred spurred his horse back to Modesto.
Reaching the train depot, he purchased a ticket and waited for the train
which was due in twenty minutes. When
the train arrived, Fred spoke to the engineer and then climbed in the stock car
with his horse. The train moved out
slowly and then picked up speed as it careened its way to the scheduled
destination.
The screech of the brakes being applied slowed
the train midway between Stockton and Modesto.
Jumping down, the conductor opened the door of the stockcar, receiving a
wave of thanks from the lawman as he jumped his horse onto the ground and
galloped away before the train continued onto its final destination.
Fred stopped in front of the white
columned house and knocked on the oak paneled door. Silas opened the door and stepped back to allow the lawman to
enter. Taking off his hat, Fred shook
hands with Jarrod and followed him into the study.
“When Harvey checked Benson in, he
mentioned Benson wrote down San Francisco as where he was from, but he had a
Manteco newspaper in his hand. Benson
even remarked he had just come from Frisco.
Manteco is the other way from San Francisco on the rail line. I bet he’s there or close by.”
“Fred, why don’t you just wire the law
there and ask?” inquired Jarrod confused as to why Fred felt he needed one of
the Barkleys for identification.
“They don’t have any law there.”
“What happened to Sheriff White? I thought he was the sheriff there.”
“Sheriff White resigned shortly after
Nick was kidnapped. He had a problem
with the mayor’s wife.” replied Fred with a slight smile.
“Oh, he didn’t get along with her?”
asked Jarrod.
Chuckling, Fred shook his head, “No, he
got along too well with her.”
Laughing, Jarrod nodded, “I see.”
“I’d like two of you to come with me to
Manteco. One should be Eugene, since he
saw Benson in a beard and mustache. The
other could be you, Nick or Heath. All
three of you saw him when he was clean shaven. I have the likeness that was drawn of him, but seeing someone in
person is better.”
“Heath and Nick won’t be back for a
couple days. They’re in Nevada
inspecting a new mine. I’ll let Mother
know, then Gene and I will get ready to go.” said Jarrod heading to the
door. “Have a drink while you wait,
Fred.”
Forty minutes later, the three riders
left the Barkley ranch headed to the town of Manteco, their hopes pinned on a
man’s reading of a newspaper. Reaching
the small town of Manteco in the afternoon, they dismounted in front of the
hotel and walked up to the desk. The
clerk looked up and smiled widely.
“Rooms for you gentlemen?”
Fred shook his head, “No rooms just some
information.”
Seeing the silver star on the man’s
vest, the clerk nodded, “I’ll help if I can, sheriff.”
Pulling out a brown paper containing a
likeness of Eric Benson, Fred handed it to the clerk and asked, “See anyone
around here that may fit that picture?”
Studying the paper closely, the clerk
nodded “Could be room thirteen. Mr.
Eric Fletcher.”
Jarrod and Eugene proceeded to the
stairs, stopping at the clerk’s voice, “He left two days ago.”
“Eric Fletcher.” mumbled Fred wondering
if that was indeed his name. “Did he
say where he was going?”
Thinking back, the clerk replied, “No,
he didn’t say any towns. When I asked
when we could expect him again, he did
mention that he had to collect some money from an old friend and wouldn’t be
back in this area after that.”
“Sue.” stated Gene and Jarrod rushing
out to their horses.
“Wait!” shouted Fred. “Let’s wire Billy, he can warn your family.”
Riding to the telegraph office, Jarrod
and Gene waited outside while Fred sent the wire.
“She’ll be okay, Gene.” stated Jarrod
squeezing his little brother’s shoulder.
“We shouldn’t have left, Jarrod. Not with Heath and Nick gone, that man is
heartless.”
“Gene, there’s a whole crew of men
there. Benson won’t get close to
her.” said Jarrod, his voice sounding
more positive than he felt at this moment.
With the wire being sent, they rode back
to Stockton and straight to the Barkley ranch.
Chapter 71
In Minden, Nevada, timbers cracked and
tumbled to the ground raising a cloud of dust.
Two men dove through the dust and landed outside the opening with the
cloud billowing out after them.
Coughing and sputtering, they climbed to their feet and stared at the
now closed entrance.
Nick ran his hand through his dark hair,
shaking out the dust that lay on it, the look of disgust on his face matching
his voice, “Who the hell thought this was a workable or sellable mine!”
Wiping his forehead, Heath breathed a
sigh of relief they escaped the mine’s deathtrap alive. “Seems it was a bit of an understatement,
big brother.”
“Understatement? More like a lie!’ growled Nick. “We could have been killed!”
“Yep.” mumbled Heath patting the dust
off his clothes.
“The lawyer and college boy can check
the next mine that’s for sale.” snorted Nick swiping at his shirt and pants.
“No reason to be mad at Jarrod and
Gene.” gruffed Heath walking to his rented horse.
“Who said I was mad at them?” puzzled
Nick following along.
“Why else send them? They don’t know as much about mines that we
do.” stated Heath taking a healthy swig of water from his canteen to wash the dust out of his throat.
“You’re awful touchy lately.” growled
Nick snatching the canteen out of his hands.
“Pending fatherhood making you nervous?”
Turning crimson, Heath leaned against
his horse and stared out across the landscape for several minutes, “I might
be.”
“Might be, what?” asked Nick his
attention drawn to his quiet brother.
“Nervous, I guess. I don’t know.”
“Nervous about Sonja having the baby?”
“No, something else.” paused Heath
trying to find the words.
Nick watched the jaw of his younger
brother clenching to restrain the emotions that seemed to be hanging on the
edge and wanting to be let loose. Over
the past week, Heath seemed more thoughtful and withdrawn as the birth of his
child neared. This trip away came at a
time when Nick was considering how to draw out the man’s thoughts and he
grabbed the opportunity of time alone with Heath. He was planning to use the trip to loosen the steel jaws of his
brother.
Putting his hand on Heath’s shoulder,
Nick asked quietly, “What is it, Heath?
You can tell me.”
“I’m afraid I won’t know how to be a
father, Nick.” admitted Heath letting out a shaky breath.
“I know, I feel the same way.” replied
Nick.
“You do?” inquired Heath
incredulously. “Sure don’t look like it
from where I stand. You seem pretty
confident with the twins.”
Chuckling, Nick clapped Heath on the
back, “At this age, the twins don’t require much fathering. All they care about are eating, sleeping and
shi.., uh, diapering. While diapering
does require some skill, they don’t need really a father right now.”
Glancing at the man beside him, Heath
asked “Why are you afraid, Nick.”
“You think cause Father was around while
I was growing up, that I’ll know what to do when the boys are older? Let me tell you, I won’t!”
“Nick, you at least had someone to show
you the ropes!” retorted Heath.
“If my sons are anything like me when I
was younger, god help me!” groaned Nick.
“There is no experience for that!”
Laughing, Heath smiled widely, “You
haven’t told Sue how you were as a boy, she may not want anymore children if
she hears that.”
Smiling, Nick put his arm over Heath’s
shoulder, “Heath, you’re going to be a wonderful daddy, father or Achai. Whatever word you use, you’ll do fine. You’re thoughtful, considerate and have a
lot of love to give.”
Cocking an eyebrow at Nick, Heath
flashed him a lop-sided grin, “You forgot I, also have the patience of a saint
from dealing with you every day.”
Grabbing him by the back of the neck,
Nick shook him slightly and growled, “Very funny, little brother! Since kids don’t come with instruction
manuals, we’ll have to help each other as we go, deal?”
Shaking the outstretched hand, Heath nodded,
“Deal! Even if they came with an
instruction manual, we’d need the women to read it anyway!”
“Ain’t it the truth, brother!” groaned
Nick. “I still say our beautiful wives
cheated on that crib building bet.”
Snickering, Heath winked, “Well, since
they have so much experience they’ll be able to build the other one when it
arrives. We can sit back, relax, have a
drink and supervise while they work.”
“Good idea! If we hurry, we can catch the next train. Let’s head for home and see how our women
are fairing without us, little brother.”
shouted Nick pulling himself into the saddle and spurring his mount to a
gallop, heading back towards town with Heath riding beside him.
Chapter 72
“Hannah, are you sure you don’t mind
watching the boys while I head to the ranch?” asked Sue.
“Tis my pleasure, Miss Sue.” smiled
Hannah widely. “Git on with ya’ now.”
Hugging the diminutive woman, Sue
grinned, “I won’t be long, Hannah. Thank you.”
“Git, now.” said Hannah shooing the
young mother out of the nursery and turning her attention to the month old
twins. Her small strong hands gently
caressing each of the sleeping boys’ cheeks.
Sitting in the rocker by the cribs, Hannah picked up her sewing and
hummed a gospel tune to pass the time.
Walking down the stairs with her gun
belt over her shoulder, Sue entered the parlor, “I’m leaving, Mother.”
Glancing up, Victoria smiled at the
shining in the emerald eyes at the prospect of a day out of the house, riding
in the sunshine. Walking over, she
cupped her daughter-in-law’s cheek and said quietly, “The boys will be fine in
Hannah’s care, don’t worry.”
Blushing, Sue nodded, “I know, it’s just
this is the first time I’ll be away from them, that’s all.”
“Enjoy your day on your ranch and we’ll
enjoy our day at the orphanage. Will
you be home for dinner?”
“I wouldn’t miss it for the world. It’ll be a nice quiet dinner with no men to
bother us.” smirked Sue putting on her gunbelt, causing the other women to
laugh. “I’ll try to be back by six. See
you later!”
Walking to the door, Sue picked up her
hat and waved before leaving through the front door. Whistling happily, she saddled Amigo and headed to her ranch
immersing herself in the leisurely trot of the horse on her first ride since
the birth of her twins. Enjoying the
sunshine and the crisp stillness of the air around her.
The sun was lowering itself to the
horizon as Sue made her way back to the Barkley ranch. The day spent on her ranch had its ups and
downs. Davey’s death still foreshadowed
them but as with such things, life had to proceed.
Emily was scooting around, keeping the
adults at the ranch amused and busy scurrying after her. The changes in her godchild had amazed Sue
and she smiled at the thoughts of the children that would be playing together
as they grew.
Reaching the gate separating the two
ranches, Sue climbed down and tied Amigo to the fence. Walking over, she frowned at the gate, which
was fine in the morning, but now lying on the ground. Sue lifted and pushed the gate up to lean against the fence. Breathing deeply from the exertion, Sue
examined the wood of the gate for breakage.
Finding none, she walked over and knelt to examine the hinges on the fence
post.
“Looking for something in particular?”
asked a deep voice quietly.
Deputy Billy Anderson was returning in
the late afternoon from the house of Widow Thomas. Sighing loudly, he knew the Sheriff would have his head for
spending so much time to get her cat out of a tree. ‘I get cats to deal with when he’s gone, not even a drunk to lock
up.’
He sat behind the desk, read the
telegram addressed to him and rushed outside to his horse. Galloping out of town, he headed to the
Barkley ranch. Knocking on the door of
the mansion, he was greet by Silas.
“Silas, are the Barkleys home?”
“No, Mr. Billy. They’s not home. Mrs. Barkley be home shortly.”
“Where’s Mrs. Barkley, uh, I mean Sue?”
asked Billy.
“She’s out ta her ranch, Mr. Billy.”
“Is Mr. McCall here?”
“Yes’m.
He’s in da bunkhouse.” replied Silas.
“Thanks!” shouted the young deputy
running to the bunkhouse and bursting through the door. Silas watched from the front porch as Billy,
the foreman and two hands came running out.
Jumping on their horses, the group headed towards the Weston ranch in
the setting sun.
Sue continued her examination of the
hinges with the small hairs on the back of her neck rising at the voice. Sue knew the owner of that voice, the
instant she heard it. The voice of the
man who killed her friend, almost stole the life of Gene and was involved in
the kidnapping plot that did kill her husband for a short period of time.
The image of her twin boys growing up
without a mother briefly flashed through her head but she squeezed her eyes shut
to force it out of her mind and to concentrate on the situation at hand.
“This is private land. You’re trespassing, mister.”
Eric laughed out loud at the confidence
of the woman examining the post, kneeling on her left knee, her right leg
bent. The sound of his laughter carried
to her ears from the left of her.
Running the fingers of her left hand
over the hinges of the post, Sue moved her right hand slowly back towards her
gun. “You better leave or have a good
reason for being on this range. The
Barkleys don’t take kindly to trespassers.”
“Really? Gee, I’m shaking in my boots.” replied Eric sarcastically.
Sue slid the thong off her pistol as she
stood up and stepped away from the post.
Looking into the eyes of the vile man holding a gun on her, she
retorted, “What do you want, Benson?”
Eric couldn’t keep the surprise from
showing in his eyes or on his face at her use of his name. “I’m surprised you recognized me and
actually, it’s Eric Fletcher not Benson.”
“Actually, I don’t care what name you
call yourself. You’re a kidnapper and
a murderer.” retorted Sue sarcastically.
Chuckling, Eric nodded, “Touché. Your stepmother was right about that sharp
tongue of yours.”
“From your choice of Ramona, anyone can
see you have horrible taste in women.”
“She was only a means to an end and a
fun companion while it lasted. Almost
as fun as the afternoon I spent with the lovely Audra.”
“Audra’s out of your league. She’d never knowingly mingle with the scum
of the earth.” replied Sue with disgust.
Anger reddened Eric’s face and he
stepped closer towards his prey, the
ominous clicking of the hammer sounded in the early evening air.
“I want that ransom money. From my research on you, I know you have it
readily available. If you cooperate,
I’ll let you live.”
Sue stared at him and started laughing,
a wide smile gracing her face with her green eyes flashing. Stopping his advance, Eric glared at the
laughing woman. Her insolence causing the corners of his thin
mouth to upturn and the pistol barrel lowered just slightly as some of the
angry tension left his body.
Watching the slight lowering of the
barrel, Sue ran through the gate and dove behind a large tree. Her back protesting the jarring of the
sudden landing. Rolling over with her
gun in hand, she threw off her hat and laying on her stomach, peered around the
large tree.
Catching a glimpse of Fletcher running
through the open gate, she pulled the trigger and swore when the adrenaline
pulsing through her veins caused her to miss.
‘Jose is gonna be mighty upset I didn’t follow my own teachings.’
Breathing deeply to steady, she watched
the tree where he disappeared.
Eric knelt behind the tree and
studied the area around him. Her
laughter and sudden run through the gate had caught him off guard.
Cursing, he realized with that
unexpected movement, she had turned the tables on him. It would’ve been one thing if it was Audra
Barkley playing hide and seek in the trees with him, but this woman could
actually kill him.
“Fletcher, hope you’re not thinking of
running to your horse. There’s a lot of
open ground between him and you!” called Sue tauntingly and thinking, ‘Keep him off balance.’
Looking over, he clenched his jaw in
anger realizing she was right. He
looked at her horse and jumped when she let out a yell. Amigo responding to his training, pulled on
the knot, untying the reins and trotted away from the fence towards his stable.
“Yaqui horse trick. Took us a few months to get that one down. I didn’t want you to get any ideas about
riding my horse either, Fletcher!” called Sue smiling when she heard the faint
cursing.
“Seems we’re both stuck here, Zanie.”
yelled Fletcher searching the area for a better position. “You can’t make it to my horse, either.”
“Wasn’t planning on it, Fletcher. Leastwise, not while you’re still
breathing.”
‘You sure got that wrong, Benson. I’m not the dead man. When my wife gets a hold of you, you’re all
gonna wish you’d never known her.’ Eric shook his head to rid the words of Nick Barkley, from
so long ago, out of his head. The chill
running down his spine caused him to shiver.
‘Stop it! All you gotta do is
wait til dark. Then you can get her.’
“You should have cut and run with your
losses, Fletcher. But I guess, I really
should thank you.”
“For what?”
“Well, it’s been a while since I’ve
played dodge the bullet. I can feel all
those forgotten skills coming back to me!”
“Think you’re pretty smart, don’t you
bitch?” shouted Eric angrily at her seemingly blasé attitude about the
situation.
“I do, Fletcher. Thanks for noticing.” chuckled Sue imaging
the anger spreading across his face at her taunting and laughter.
Sue lay on her stomach keeping her eyes
on the tree where Fletcher was. Watching
intently for any movement, she squinted her eyes at the dark spot in the
grass. ‘Hmm, looks like a boot
heel’ Aiming, she let out her breath
and slowly squeezed the trigger.
Eric let out an involuntary startled
yelp from the bullet that struck his boot.
He shook with anger at the laughter coming from the other tree. Firing a couple shots in the area where she
was hidden, his hand clenched the gun tighter at her shout.
“You missed.”
“Too bad about your wrangler Hinton,
Zanie!” shouted Eric. “If he didn’t work with you, he’d be alive today!”
“You killed him, not me. Since you mentioned him, it’s only fair I
warn you about something.” called Sue.
Several minutes passed when against his
better judgment, Eric shouted back, “Warn me about what?”
“Your death is gonna be a lot more
painful than my friend’s. Did your
research tell you about my Yaqui guardian?
The Yaqui took great pleasure in torturing the enemy. Picture that in your mind while you wait for
the cover of darkness to fall, Fletcher!”
Sweat rolled down Eric’s face and he
wiped it away with his sleeve.
Resigning himself to not answer any more of her taunts, his eyes grew
frantic as he searched for a way out of there.
Looking at the setting sun, he knew darkness couldn’t come fast
enough. ‘Should’ve cut and run,
dammit.’
The sound of pounding hooves reached
their ears and his heart started beating just as rapidly as the horses were
running.
“Cavalry’s coming, Fletcher. Time’s running out!” Sighing in relief when she heard the horses
and thought grimly. ‘If I was in his
position, I’d try to head further into the trees.’
Eric sprinted for the trees to the side
and back of him. He was slammed to the
ground and fell sideways from the bullet that entered his body. Hearing the feet running towards him, he
started to lift his arm.
Pain flared in his wrist when a small
boot stepped firmly on it and his gun was
pulled out and tossed to the side, landing with a faint thud. He lay on the ground holding his left hand
on his bloody side, seeing the black barrel of the pistol pointed at him.
Looking past the pistol, his eyes stared
into the cold emerald eyes. The look
in those eyes captured his attention.
He lost all thought of the pain flaring in his body and thoughts of escape,
his chest barely moving from his breaths.
He had never seen such cold lifeless eyes in a woman before and he knew
his life was over.
“Sue, put your gun down.” ordered Fred
quietly.
Fred, Gene and Jarrod caught up with the
group from the ranch shortly after they started to the Weston ranch. The single
shot that rang out when they reached the intersection of the two ranches had
the worst fear rushing into their minds.
The relief they felt at the sight of Sue
holding a gun on Benson turned to dismay when she wouldn’t obey the sheriff’s
command to put her gun down.
Jarrod and Gene hurried over to stand by
Fred. The look on their
sister-in-law’s face at the man on the ground was frightening to see. Her eyes never once leaving him as the
sheriff spoke.
“You can’t shoot him in cold blood.”
explained Fred calmly. “Give me your
gun. Don’t make me take it from you,
Sue.”
Jarrod said quietly, “Sue, let’s go
home. Come on, it’s over.”
“Sheriff, you gotta do something.” pleaded
Eric watching the tightening of her finger on the trigger. “You’re the law, I deserve a fair trial!”
Gene walked over and held his hand out
for her gun, “You get revenge if you kill him, but you’ll wind up in jail. He’s already destroyed one life, don’t let
him destroy your life with Nick and the boys.
Let the law take care of him.
Please, Sue.”
After several long minutes, Sue let out
a shaky breath, pointed the pistol upward and lowered the hammer. Sliding her gun into the holster, she let
Gene lead her away with his arm across her shoulders. Fred handcuffed the barely conscious prisoner and bandaged his
wound before putting him on his horse.
“Thanks college boy.” whispered Sue when
Gene pulled her into a hug. Her body
trembling from adrenaline and emotions, she held on while tears flew from her
eyes at the release of tension.
“Let’s go home.” said Jarrod softly
taking his turn to gratefully hug her.
Nodding, Sue followed the brothers to
the horses and climbed up behind Jarrod.
“Duke, will you help Fred take Benson to
Stockton?” asked Sue quietly. “I wanna
make sure he gets into a jail cell and stays there.”
“That would be our pleasure, Sue.”
smiled Duke mounting up and following the lawmen with the two hands.
Chapter 73
Jarrod pulled up on the reins at her
request, Sue slid down from Jingo and stretched her lower back.
“Sorry, I think motherhood is making me
soft.” winced Sue. “Or it could be
landing on that tree root bruised my back.”
“Sue, why didn’t you say earlier you
were hurt!” admonished Jarrod climbing down with Gene following suit.
“I just didn’t realize I’d bruised it
cause of all the excitement until Jingo started bouncing me around.” smirked
Sue.
“Jingo does not bounce. His gait is very smooth.” stated Jarrod in
defense of his mount.
“Whatever you say, Pappy.” teased Sue.
Gene laughed and shook his head. “Maybe we should walk home?”
“I think that’d be wise.” groaned
Sue. “I don’t think I can ride any more
and the house is no more than a couple miles anyway.”
“Gene, why don’t you ride ahead to let
Mother know. We don’t want her to worry
any more than necessary.” suggested Jarrod.
“You can bring a wagon back.”
“No need for a wagon. I need to exercise my leg.” sighed Sue.
“Gene, tell Mother I do NOT need a doctor.”
Grinning, Gene rode off to the ranch
house. Holding onto the reins,
Jarrod walked slowly beside his
sister-in-law back to the ranch.
“Jarrod, can I ask you something?”
“You can ask me anything, Sue.”
“If I had killed Fletcher, Benson or
whatever his name is, could you have kept me out of prison?”
Thinking, Jarrod shook his head, “No, I
don’t believe so. In the eyes of the
law, you would’ve killed an unarmed man.
Why?”
Stopping, Sue’s eyes took on a far away
look, “When Benson was on the ground
all I could see was all the blood that was covering Nick when Hank and I found
him and how I felt when I thought Nick had died. I could feel my finger tightening on the trigger and then I heard
Gene’s voice. I almost did it, I almost
killed him for what he’d done. ”
“I, for one, am glad you didn’t kill
him.” admitted Jarrod. “I don’t think
Nick would appreciate visiting his wife in jail.”
Laughing, Sue replied, “No, I don’t
think he would either.”
“Sue, can I ask you a question?”
“Anything, Mr. Barkley Attorney at Law.”
teased Sue joining Jarrod in laughter.
“Do you have any other relatives we
should be concerned with?” inquired Jarrod seriously, blue eyes twinkling.
“Lordy, I hope not!” groaned Sue rolling
her eyes. “Relatives sure are trying on
a person’s well-being.”
Laughing and talking, they continued to
the ranch which lay just short of a mile away.
“I was wrong, Jarrod.” said Sue
gesturing to the wagon heading towards them.
The man sitting on the seat of the fast moving wagon was recognizable
even from this distance.
“Do you suppose a relative by marriage
counts?” inquired Sue.
Jarrod chuckled and stood by her,
waiting for the nearing wagon to reach them.
“From the way he’s driving and that
scowl on his face, maybe I should’ve considered jail.” sighed Sue.
“Everyone has to pay the piper
eventually, my dear sister-in-law.” teased Jarrod with a smile at the sparkle
in the emerald eyes.
Nick jumped down from the wagon and ran
to his wife. Taking her in his arms, he
asked quietly, “Are you okay?”
Stifling the moan he was causing from
the hug, Sue replied, “I’m fine, Nick.”
“Good.
Now, get in the bed that’s in the wagon.” ordered Nick firmly.
“Nick, your brother is standing right there!”
exclaimed Sue with a shocked expression.
Jarrod tried unsuccessfully to stifle a
chuckle while watching the red creep up Nick’s neck to his face.
“Very funny!” grumbled Nick gently
pulling her to the wagon.
“I don’t need to lay down on a bed.”
stated Sue.
Picking her up, Nick set her on the tail
of the wagon and stood with arms crossed. “Get in.”
“Nick, really....”
“You’re not walking any further. Now, get in.” Nick repeated pointing to the
bedding.
Sighing in frustration, Sue retorted,
“You’re lucky I love you, Barkley. I
already shot one man today, wouldn’t bother me if it was two.”
“Promises. Promises.” smirked Nick.
Moving forward, Sue lay on top of the
quilts and smiled when Nick climbed in beside her.
“Jarrod, try not to hit any holes on the
way back.” said Nick winking at his wife.
“I’ll certainly do my best, Sir
Barkley.” replied Jarrod bowing grandly to the laughing couple, tying Jingo to
the back before heading to the front and climbing up on the seat. Slapping the reins, Jarrod grinned at the
low menacing growl coming from the back of the wagon.
“So, my wife, how was your day?”
Chapter 74
Sue grinned as Sonja lowered herself
into the rocking chair in the nursery. “Well,
I can see you’re not gonna be much help to me.”
“I’m supervising.” smiled Sonja watching
her friend take the pieces out of the open crate and lay them on the floor.
Placing the parts on the floor, Sue
started putting the crib together. “I
didn’t think this crib would get here before the baby came.”
“I still have two weeks, Sue.” stated
Sonja catching the rattle Sue tossed to her.
Snorting, Sue replied, ”Well, I thought
I had a month to go and look what happened.”
“Colton and Dakota must have the same
level of patience as their parents.”
“As their Father you mean!” stated Sue receiving a chuckle from
Sonja.
Leaning back in the rocker, Sonja
watched her friend build the crib, her thoughts wondering over the past few
tumultuous months on the Barkley ranch.
When Sue arrived home after apprehending
Fletcher, she would not leave the twins in anyone’s care. In her sleep at night, her mind would
conjure up the images of her sons growing up motherless.
Many times Nick had woken in the middle
of the night to find his wife standing in between the cribs in the nursery,
watching Colton and Dakota sleep. Her
greatest fear was not being around for her children when they grew.
This fear had become overwhelming since
Fletcher had surprised her at the gate.
Walking up behind her, Nick would hold her tightly and peer over her
shoulder at their little wonders.
Quietly letting his presence and strength calm her.
The trial had spanned a week and every
member of the Barkley family had testified.
The association between Sue’s stepmother and Eric Fletcher had created
much fodder for the newspaper, but through it all Sue had focused on her twins
and Nick.
The tension which had been felt in the
household the past two months had dissipated with the life sentencing of Eric
Fletcher, kidnapper and murderer.
Once the sentence had been handed down
and the knowledge that Fletcher would never get out of prison unless he was in
a pine box, worked its way into her subconscious, the nightly trips into the nursery
slowly stopped.
Heath and Nick had brought the crate
home yesterday, carried it up to the nursery and advised Sue how she would be
spending her Sunday.
“What no time limit? No bet?” smirked Sue at her husband’s scowl.
“No way! I’m not betting with you anymore. You cheat!” snorted Nick.
“I…do…not…cheat.” replied Sue firmly
emphasizing every word. “You’re a sore
loser!”
“Am not!”
“Are too!”
“Not!”
“Too!”
“Not!”
“Not!”
“Too!”
Sue kissed the cheek of her husband and
left the room with Sonja, laughter from the ladies in the hallway reaching the
men’s ears.
Heath shook his head and sighed loudly,
“Will you ever learn, Nick?”
“Oh shut up, Heath!” growled Nick
opening the crate and grumbling to himself.
“Woman makes me nuts. Hope those
boys don’t grow up to be just like her.
That happens, I’ll be in the crazy hospital.”
Heath clapped his brother on the back,
“How about a drink?”
“Best idea you had all day, little
brother!”
“Sonja. Sonja!” called Sue.
“Sorry, I was lost in my thoughts.”
blushed Sonja. “You finished it!”
Frowning, Sue looked at the crib, “I’ve
been wondering. What are we gonna do
when the babies outgrow these cribs?”
Smiling, Sonja shook her head, “Sue,
they go into regular beds then.”
“I know that!” retorted Sue. “I mean where are we gonna put their regular
beds. We should keep this room as a
nursery. We may have more children and
there’s always Jarrod, Eugene and Audra too.
I think we may need a bigger house.”
“I think we have a while before we have
to decide that, Sue. Eugene, Jarrod and
Audra are not married or even engaged.
I haven’t even delivered this baby yet, let alone think of more!”
“Yeah, guess you’re right.” grinned Sue
putting the top on the crate and pushing it to the side. Grabbing the bedding, she finished and stood
back looking at her creation. “Perfect
for your son or daughter!”
“Looks wonderful. Thank you, Sue.”
Waving off her friend’s thanks, Sue
looked at the time. “We have a while to
go before dinner. Since Nick and Heath
are taking care of the twins, you want to play some cards?”
Sitting at the table in Sonja and
Heath’s bedroom, the two played cards and were joined by Audra shortly
after. Talking and giggling, the three
passed the afternoon away until it was time to ready themselves for
dinner.
Standing up, Sonja looked at her friend
in shock, “My water just broke.”
“What!” exclaimed Sue jumping up and
pushing Audra out the door, “Get Heath! Tell Nick to get Dr. Merar! Mother, too!”
Helping Sonja to the bed, Sue winked,
“Guess somebody else is a little impatient.”
“Oh shut up, Sue!” moaned Sonja.
The sun woke itself and climbed slowly
to the horizon, spreading the hues of orange and red across the clear sky. The light filtered through the window and
shone on the exhausted young woman in the bed.
The opening and closing of a door sent
five pairs of feet rushing to the bottom of the stairs. Looking up expectantly at the blond walking
down the grand staircase, Jarrod, Sue, Silas and Audra held their breath watching
as Heath placed the bundle in Nick’s arms.
Blue teary eyes looked into the teary
hazel eyes. Nick pulled back the
blanket revealing the sleeping baby with light brown hair. Her father’s gentle voice carried to everyone’s
ears.
“Brother Nick, may I have the pleasure
of introducing your goddaughter.
Nicoleah Victoria Barkley.”
