Part One -- Planning

It was the first Friday dance in Stockton for the season and the house was quiet since it was only Victoria and Silas in the house. The rest of the family had soon after dinner left for the Town Hall. Victoria Barkley wondered smilingly which girls would catch the hearts of her sons tonight and for how long it would last. She didn’t worry about Audra as she was sure the boys would see to it that nothing would happen to her or that any boy would get too close. Thinking of all the girls that had passed over the years she spread the quilt she was working on over the dining room table and stepped back. Studying it closely she realized that her concentration wasn’t with her and with a small sigh she started to undo what she just had done.

"Tea Madam?" Silas walked into the room carrying a tray with a teapot in silver and a plate with scones and biscuits. As he passed her he looked at the quilt. “Something on your mind Madam?”

"Oh Thanks Silas." She left the table and started to walk to the living room followed by Silas. “Just thinking of the girls the boys bring home now and then”. She continued to the sofa by the hearth and sat down.

“A colourful collection, just like the quilt, Madam.”  Smilingly Silas served her the tea and placed the plate in front of her.

“Indeed it is.”  Just as she took the cup form Silas the front door opened with a bang. Turning towards the foyer she saw Nick throw his hat on the table and walk straight up the stairs without even glancing at her. With a surprised look on their faces Silas and Victoria looked at each other and then at the grandfather clock.

"Now what do you think has happened? It’s only half-past-nine." Victoria looked worried at Silas.

“Didn’t look like he had been in a fight, did it?”

"I don’t know Madam." Silas shook his head.

"NICK." She called up. "NICHOLAS." When there still wasn’t any response she put down the cup and went after him. After a knock on his door she waited for a moment. As no answer came she knocked again but this time she entered without waiting for him to let her in.

"Nick, what are you doing home? What’s wrong?" He was standing by the fireplace leaning one arm against it and holding a drink. He quickly gleamed at her, just long enough for her to notice the pain in his eyes before he emptied the glass. He went over to the bottle and poured another drink and sat down with the bottle in front of him.

"Nothing".

"Nothing? It doesn’t seem so to me, son."

"It’s nothing Mother." He sighed "Abigail came with Joe Patterson. To me she had said she had to be home. Please just leave me alone Mother." She walked up to him and sat down. As she put an arm around him she moved the bottle away from him.

“Getting drunk won’t help, Nick.” He didn’t respond or lean against her as she had hoped; he just sat there staring a head of him with an empty look in his eyes. As he reached for the bottle she decided to leave him alone. A kiss on his head and she rose to leave. “I’ll be up for a few hours more in case you change your mind and want to talk.”

A few days later ….

"Mother do you have any idea what Nick wants for his birthday? I have asked him but he just won’t answer me. Just says that anything I can come up with will be fine. And by the way what’s the matter with him? He’s so quiet." Victoria looked smilingly at her daughter and put the flowers she was arranging down on the table.

"As a matter of fact I do have an idea and it does involve us all so we need to have a talk about it. Please go and see if Heath is availably and I’ll look in the study for Jarrod. Nick is getting supplies in Stockton so it’s perfect to do it now." Audra ran off just as Jarrod walked in to the room. "Good, Jarrod. I was just coming to get you. I have a suggestion for Nick’s birthday."

"Ah Pretty Lady, what have you come up with now?"

"Just wait until your brother and sister comes. I’ll get some coffee ready in the meantime." When she returned they were waiting for her and as she put the tray down Audra moved up to pour. Seated with a cup she smiled at her children.

"We better hurry Mother. Nick is bound to be home any minute." Heath looked at the woman sitting opposite him.

"This won’t take long Heath. I have an idea for Nick’s birthday present and I just want to talk about it with the rest of you to hear what you think." She saw three pairs of eyes looking at her with interest. "What if we were to set up a date each for him? A girl of your choice, you or her can plan what to do but it mustn’t cost Nick anything. On his birthday it’s presented to him in a way you choose."

"But …" Audra looked confused for a moment. "Oh, you mean I can pick someone I think would be perfect for him."

"Now that’s quite an idea, Mother. What if he doesn’t play along? Going on blind dates isn’t his favourite thing since last time it was done."

"I’m sure he will grumble and growl a bit but he will go along, if nothing else but to please us. And because of last time I want you all to choose carefully and think twice before deciding. He mustn’t be embarrassed."

"Shall we have set the dates or shall he and the chosen lady decide it later on?"

"I think there will be a risk that he prolongs things then, we better set the dates and coordinate so that they don’t happen the same evening."

"Or weekend. Who shall start?" Heath picked out four matches, broke them at different lengths and mixed them before reaching them to Victoria.

"Let destiny decide that. Mother?" One by one they pulled a match before comparing.

"Ok, Jarrod starts, then Audra and Heath and I have the last. Jarrod as soon as you know when let the rest of us know."

"I already have an idea. The weekend after he and Heath returns from the cattle drive there is a play in San Francisco. I think I’ll book four tickets and a table to start with."

"It doesn’t have to be in Stockton?"

“Four?”

"No Audra, it doesn’t but let Heath know so that he doesn’t plan anything outside town himself the same date as you. And depending on what you plan it might be a good idea if …." Sounds at the door made them all turn and watch Nick enter the house.

"HEATH"

"Yes, big brother."

"Coffee break!? I leave you to fix up the wagons for this afternoon and you take a coffee break!” He inhaled and was about to continue when Heath smilingly came, turned him around and moved him towards the door again.

"Boy howdy, big brother, if we got so much to do what are we standing here for then. Come let’s unload the supplies."

Part Two -- The big day

Victoria heard her boys walk through the door as they came in after the last round up, tomorrow they would leave for another trip to San Diego and be gone for about 4 weeks and arrive home just as Christmas preparations were to start. She quickly moved to the foyer to make sure that they went straight up to get cleaned.

“Welcome boys, how has it gone? All cattle in the pastures ready for tomorrow?” After receiving a kiss from each of them she nodded her head towards the stairs. Heath saw the move and nudged at his brother.

“Toss a coin who gets the tub first or just a race?” Nick looked at him.

“Dinner isn’t until an hour and half. Think there is time for a drink first.”

“Come on, big brother, what shall it be? If I lose I promise to get the tube ready for you, serve you a drink and clean the tube when you are done.” Nick looked at him and shook his head.

“Want to get rid of me that desperately? Just remember I’m not doing those things for you! Toss the coin and heads for me.” He looked longingly towards the trolley, thinking that he could always sneak a bottle with him.

“Sorry, old man, your drink will have to wait. Heads it is.” He pulled Nick up the stairs and didn’t let go of him until they were by his room. “Get your things or I’ll have Mother bring you clean clothes. See you in the bathroom in a few minutes and NO detours.” He continued to the bathroom while Nick got his clothes.

When Heath got down to dinner they were all gathered in the living room, all but the birthday child. Victoria looked at Jarrod.

“Please go up and get him.”

“He has been like this for weeks. When is he going to cheer up? He is no fun.”

“Audra, he just has a lot on his mind right now. Hurry, he will be down with Jarrod in a minute.” Quickly the presents were placed on the table. Silas came in a put a small parcel there too for Mr Nick. As Nick and Jarrod entered the room they all started to sing ‘Happy birthday’ and Victoria took her son under his arm and led him to the sofa and made him sit down. Slightly embarrassed he looked at the parcels in front of him. Feeling a bit bad for being in such bad mood.

“Sorry, I should be …”

“It’s Ok brother Nick. Now come along and open but you have to leave those four to the last.” Jarrod pointed to a pile at the back.

“Why? I just wanted to start with them.” Nick pretended to reach for one of them but changed in the last minute and opened a box from Eugene. He read the note: “Dear brother, a friend of mine got this book for me in London. Don’t think it has been published here yet. Enjoy! Gene.”  Nick lifted up a new book written by Alfred Tennyson: Ballads and other poems. Gently he started to turn the pages, stopped at the first poem and quietly read it before Victoria gently touched his face.

“There are more on the table, Nick and we are dying of curiosity.” He looked up and saw the others and their smiling faces. Gently he put the book back in the box with the note. The next he took up was from his mother. Just a pair of socks with a note that he had an appointment with the tailor when he got back home.

“Frankly Nick, I don’t know what you do to your clothes. I have told Mr Rickman what you need.” She laughed as he bowed his head, his cheeks started to turn a slight shade of pink.  He continued with the parcel from Silas. Finally something he had wished for: a new belt and scarf.

“Thanks, Silas. You always know what I want and need. These will be handy tomorrow.” After that several smaller parcels with bits and pieces in them. He couldn’t believe that Audra and Heath spent so much time wrapping each and every one of the bullets in paper. As if there weren’t anything else to do but deep down he was amused at the idea and the trouble they must have had. “Now may I open those four? And why are there numbers on them?”

“Nick, what ever you think of this, the idea is mine, and only mine.” Victoria put her hand over his before he reached for the first. “I got the others to join me in this so if you are going to lose you temper, point your anger at me, Ok son?” She saw the confused look in his eyes.

“Why, I’m not going to like it?”

“Open number one. It’s from me.” Jarrod pushed a thin golden box towards Nick. As Nick carefully pulled the strings he gleamed round at his family. ‘Now why were they on edge?’ He was getting a bit weary about what could be inside. Lifting the lid he saw a playbill, train tickets, tie and a hotel note. A scent of Lily-of the-valley came towards him and he pulled back. A card in the shape of a sun feather was laying over everything and he opened it and read out load:

Dear Nick,

Happy Birthday!

On December 18 you and I will have the pleasure of first seeing Miss Lotta Crabtree at The California Theatre and after that dinner is booked at Cold Day Restaurant.

Sincerely,

Genevieve

He looked up at Jarrod with a frown. With a laugh Jarrod walk up to him and kissed his head.

“Don’t look so worried. She won’t eat you and I’ll be there too. I know her well. And since you can’t travel back and forth to Stockton I have booked a room for you at The Palace Hotel, all for your pleasure. All you need is to turn up bathed and dressed for an evening out in the city. Everything else is on my account.” Nick swallowed hard not really knowing what to say and guessing what was in the other three. He could feel the anxiety grow within him.

“Now open mine.” Audra pushed a silver coloured box with pink ribbons towards him. “Hurry, I want to know what you think.” He could feel the heat on his cheeks when he lifted the lid. Another box was inside and on it a note and a dried rose. The whole box smelled of roses.

“Happy Birthday Nick,

Normally it’s custom that the man courts the woman with candy and flowers but today it’s my turn to send some to you with your birthday gift from Audra. On December 20 you and I will together with Audra and her beau travel to Sacramento, returning back in Stockton in time for the Christmas party at the Town Hall. Looking forward to seeing you at the train station.

Yours truly

Chastity”

He opened the chocolate box filled with dark chocolate pieces from Ghirardelli and took one and slowly bit into it before reaching the box towards his mother. When the chocolate piece had melted in his mouth he looked at his sister with a smile.

“What are we to do in Sacramento, Audra?”

“Oh, we’ll decide that on the train, I have booked a dinner table during the travel home so that we can go direct to the party. Are you Ok with it? I know you will like Chas, I haven’t known her for long but she is so fun to be with.”

“Calm down Audra. Let Nick make up his own mind of the girl when they meet. Now big brother, this one is from me but I don’t think you should open it here amongst the women. It’s something for your very own pleasure.” Heath pushed the ruby red parcel towards Nick. “If you must, just peek inside, don’t lift the lid off or read the note out load. Please.” Heath could feel the heat rise in his face as his eyes looked down.

“Come on Heath. You got to see and hear what Jarrod and I got for him. Open Nick. I’m curious.” Jumping in her seat Audra was ready to help Nick to open the red box. Victoria looked at Heath as he was getting a shade that matched the parcel and she decided to step in guessing what he had gotten for his brother.

“No Audra we don’t need to know.” Victoria tried to sound stern. ”That is amongst Nick and Heath. Nick I suggest you open it after dinner in your own room. Here open this instead.” Her tone changed as she reached over and placed a royal blue box with a silver rose on.  ”It’s from me. I do hope it will please you”. Grinning Nick took the hold of the red box shook it and pulled at the ribbon a little before he put it aside and turned to his mother’s box. Inside the box there was a cracker in the same blue coloured paper. A note attached to it told him to open it gently.

“Mother?” He held one end towards her and with a smooth pull it cracked open with a pop. The aroma of lavender came. “What is it with you ladies having to make everything smell of flowers? One could think that I’m sitting in a garden.”

“Nick, I think that is just …” She stopped because of the look on his face and quickly tried to hide her mouth behind her hand but it was too late. She started to giggle and soon the others joined in.

“So this is where it is! I was looking all over for it a last week. DAMN there are drawings on it.” He unrolled the paper that had been in the cracker.

“Nicholas.”

“Don’t worry Nick. It’s a copy. Mother asked for it a few weeks ago and I gave it to her. She told me it was absolutely necessary for her surprise. The original is back amongst the others, I promise. I put it back myself yesterday.” Heath calmed his brother down before he got all worked up.

“You said Jarrod had it in San Francisco.”

“Boy Howdy did that map cause us problems. Since you wired Jarrod to bring it with him I had to wire him too telling him I had lent it to Mother for her surprise and then Jarrod had to accept getting yelled at for forgetting it when he came home the day after.”

“I guess I owe you an apology Jarrod. Sorry.”

“It’s OK. Now let see why she did need it? Arranging a date can hardly need a map over the Northern parts of the ranch.” Nick rolled out the map on table and got help to hold it out flat by the others. In the corner where it would state what it was and have the essential data there was instead an invitation.

“On the first day of the new year at 2 pm you are invited to a picnic. The map will give you the clue to where and what to bring.”

And under it a cat licking one of its front paws was drawn. Everyone got busy looking at the map. Nick looked at the landscape and animals that were painted on the map. Who ever made it had taken time to find out where things were.  He could see the house, a cowboy riding on a horse that looked like Coco heading towards one of his favourite spots and there by the river by a tree was a basket.

“Ok Mother I know where but who? A cat? And I guess it means I shall bring my fishing gear because that is what I normally do there.”

“You will just have to wait and see Nick. Now that was the last one and we are just in time for dinner.” Nick quickly rose and held out his arm to his mother.

Later that evening he opened the box from Heath. With a big grin on his face he lifted out the red and green feathers before taking a look at the book and garter. Picking up the pink paper note he recognised the label at the top. “This gift certificate guarantees Mr Nick Barkley an evening of the best the house can offer. I recommend he studies the book before December 30. The ladies will be waiting for him at 9 pm.  Madam Boventry.”  With a laugh he put the feathers back into the box, took another look at the book before putting it back too. He secured the box in his private safe before returning to bed with the map. Who was she? Are there any clues to that on the map? He gave up, knowing that he had to get up early he rolled it together hoping her picnic didn’t depend on him catching the food.

Part Three -- December 18

Nick arrived in San Francisco around lunchtime, having decided that he might as well get some Christmas shopping done instead of waiting to the last minute in Stockton. His body felt stiff after the 7 hour train ride and he decided to walk to the hotel. Have come home just a few days ago from San Diego he really didn’t have time for this but then again it could be fun. He sighed. What on earth could have given his mother the idea that he needed dates as birthday presents? And why did Jarrod book him in a hotel instead of lending him the guest room as usual? He looked around at the people that half run past him. How could people enjoy living like this? He shook his head slightly as he walked down the street.

The quick walk to the hotel woke his body up and as he steeped inside the foyer he felt like a new man ready for adventure. He stood and looking at the crystal chandeliers hanging high up in the vaulted ceiling, the marble columns, the ornate gold leaf sconces and stained glass that surrounded him before he walked up and got the key. Number 529. A young bellboy, dressed in his red uniform with gold braid on the jacket, turned up by his side wanting to take his suitcase. Nick smiled at him and told him that he would manage his only bag this time. He walked towards the hydraulic elevators feeling like a child on Christmas. This would be fun to try. As the pageboy stood aside to let everyone step in Nick looked at the buttons on the wall wanting to press them.  The boy asked what floors they were going to and when the elevator started to move it had passengers to every floor. Nick could have stayed on for a little longer when they arrived at his floor. He walked towards his room and entered it.  The bed looked so inviting. He sat down and jumped a little. Bouncy too. With a smile on his face he quickly did a time calculation. If he hurried up and did what he had come for he could still get a few hours sleep before the play. He quickly unpacked his suit and shirt and left for the shops and a cold beer.

Just as he stepped outside the hotel he heard someone call for him. Jarrod. Darn, there went his plan.

“In a hurry Nick? The play doesn’t start until 7.30 tonight.” Jarrod had been at the station but missed him. Heath had sent a telegram telling him that Nick would arrive a lot earlier than planed and Jarrod had therefore decided to spend some time with his brother.

“Just wanted to get something to eat and then do some Christmas shopping. I promise I’ll be bathed and dressed properly AND arrive in time for the play.” Jarrod laughed.

“Mind if I join you for some of that shopping as I want to spend some time with my little brother? Come on I know a bar that even serves a decent lunch. It’s at the Sacramento Street; just a short walk during which you can fill me in on all the details from the cattle drive.” He didn’t give Nick any chance to protest and it didn’t take long before his brother was telling him about every hill and camp that had passed during the last four weeks. “And San Diego?” He opened the door to ‘The Leopard’ and showed Nick in. They found a table in a quiet corner and Jarrod ordered for the both of them.

“Are you paying for this too?”

“Of cause I will. I’ll pay as long as you let your big brother come along.”

“Christmas will be cheap then.” Nick grinned at his brother.

“Oh no. Your presents you will have to pay for yourself.” Jarrod smiled at his brother. “The drive seems to made you happy again Nick. It’s a relief to see that. I was worried before you left, something seemed to bother you and you didn’t confide in me as you normally do.”

“I know, I had a lot on my mind before, still have but it’s something I have to figure out for myself. At least I think so. You could help me with something else. I have been going over all the women I know of in Stockton that I think Mother would know and I just can’t figure out who the picnic girl is. Heath has been no help. I figured so much that she either knows me well or Mother knows her well or she has given her every detail about me and the ranch. The details on the map are too good to be a guess.”

“To tell you the truth Nick. I have been thinking too. And I have been asking Mother but she won’t give away any more clues. Now what did Heath get you? You left before I got a chance to ask.”

“He had asked a girl to go on a date with me but then she had to turn it down at the last minute because of family reasons so he had gone to Madam Boventry and asked her for help. So I got a couple of feathers, a garter and a, hmmm, a book with …” Nick swallowed hard. “Well, let’s say it has different positions in it. Things I didn’t even know you could do. Heath said that when Madam came with the things for the box he didn’t even know if he could bring it in the house without being embarrassed. I locked it in the safe so that Audra or Mother won’t find it.” Jarrod’s laugh came form the belly with tears running down his cheeks seeing the picture of Heath sneaking it in the house and Nick’s eyes when he opens the box.

“Thank God you didn’t open it in front of Audra and Mother. Mother might have been able to handle it but can you imagine sis’s questions and who of us would have been able to answer her questions?”

“Now Heath and I would have left that to you of cause.”

“To me?”

“Yes, you are the oldest Pappy.” Nick grinned at his brother. “Ready for some shopping. I have actually done a list since I asked the ladies at dinner last night what they wanted. Don’t think I can fulfil all the young lady’s wishes because then the list would have been as long as my arm.”

“Perhaps I can have a look too and see what we can come up with. There are a few new stores since you were here last summer that I would recommend. What about Heath?”

“What about him?” Nick looked at Jarrod as they were back on the street. “Oh, I have got him a new rifle but I guess he could do with new boots or a hat. I know that he needs a new snaffle for Charger. Or fishing equipment.” Nick stopped at the window of a shop. “He is always borrowing mine or yours.”

“That’s because he says he is not so interested in fishing but you are right. He needs his own. Shall we?”

Several hours later Nick returned to the hotel carrying several parcels. He was tired and couldn’t get his boots off quickly enough. He lay down and fell asleep within seconds. Two hours later he woke up realizing he still hade time for a long bath before Jarrod was picking him up. A knock on the door startled him. A bellboy was waiting outside with a light snack and a bottle of whisky.

“I’m sorry but you must have the wrong room number. I haven’t ordered anything”

“No Sir. This was order to be severed to this room at this time. There is a note too Sir.” He walked in and placed the tray on the table and left. Nick walked up and read the note.

‘Eat before you have a drink and don’t drink it all before I pick you up. Jarrod.’

Chuckling he took a bite from a sandwich as he got the bath ready. He returned to pour up a glass to have with him to bathe. Sinking down in the hot water he sighed with delight, wishing he could stay there all evening.

At 6.59 pm Nick Barkley stepped into the elevator wearing his best dark suit, hair combed back and shoes polished. A soft scent of musk followed him. The ladies in the elevator admired him; some openly, some more carefully. As he stepped out of the elevator the clock struck 7 and he was greeted by his brother and two stunning looking ladies.

“Nick, let me introduce Henrietta and Genevieve Delaware. Ladies, my brother Nicholas Barkley.”

“Well, Sir. How nice to finally meet you after hearing so much about you.” Genevieve reached out a thin pale hand towards him. As he took the cold hand he bowed slightly and kissed it.

“The same, Miss Delaware. That’s meeting you.”

“Now do call us by our first names Nick. It will be so confusing other wise.” Henrietta smiled at him. “Jarrod, dearest, do get us a carriage so we can get to the theatre in time.”

“It’s already here. Shall we ladies?” he led the group to the carriage and helped the ladies up. “Nick?” Seeing that his brother was seated with Genevieve he told the driver where they were going.

Nick used the drive to study the girls, listening as Henrietta told them what has been written about the play and the latest gossip about Miss Lotta. Henrietta seem to be the lively one of the two sisters, well he assumed they were sisters. His date seemed to think more before she answered but then her tone was sometimes a little sharp. Stunning yes, a dress in the latest fashion gathering from what he had seen today, nice purple shade too, looked perfect to a pale skin and blond hair. Not bad at all. Henrietta was the opposite, just as petit but more dramatic with her black hair and red dress.  He started to feel uneasy and wished he was back in Stockton and the dance in the Town Hall instead. He felt a lump in his stomach when remembering what had happened last time he had been there.  ‘Relax Nick. Enjoy the evening. Remember that Jarrod as put in a lot of effort to make it special for you’. He turned his attention back to the ladies in the carriage and smiled at Henrietta’s wild description of Miss Lotta Crabtree.

The foyer was filled with people when they arrive. Jarrod took their coats and Nick’s hat with him to the wardrobe while Nick led the women towards their seats as the last bell rang. Just as Jarrod sat down next to Henrietta the light was dimmed out and the play started. Nick had to admit to himself that he was enjoying the play even if he didn’t understand much of it. It was funny, witty and had several pretty lightly dressed girls in it. That was all he wished for. As the lights went on again Jarrod urged the other three to make a move so that they could get a glass of champagne before the second act started.

“Champagne Jarrod?” Henrietta looked at her cavalier.  “Are we celebrating something?”

“Yes dear, you seem to have forgotten that this is brother Nick’s birthday present.”

“Oh, how clumsy of me. Nick I hope you forgive me. We had so much fun planning.” She reached up and gave him a kiss on his cheek. “Happy birthday, Brother Nick.” She took him under his arm and walked a head of Jarrod with Genevieve.

“It’s Ok Henrietta. It’s not like it’s today.” Nick blushed slightly. When they reached the bar a waiter turned up and they took a glass each with the golden bubbly. Nick was about to take a sip when he caught Genevieve’s eyes as she raised her glass.

“I think a toast is in order. To Nick.”

“To Nick.” Embarrassed Nick took a sip from his glass and smiled. Not knowing what to say he started to study the room they were standing in.

“Have you ever been here before Nick?” Henrietta had seen his eyes wandering around the room and felt the tension in his arm.

“No. Jarrod is the one in the family who enjoys these things.”

“And you? What do you enjoy?” Before he got a chance to answer Jarrod interfered.

“Let me: a cold beer at a saloon with a beautiful girl by his side or fishing or a ride on his horse or hunting or …”

“Now that sounds like a country boy to me.” Genevieve studied him.

“Well, that is what I am. A rancher by heart and choice. The city is a nice place to visit but I don’t think I could live here.”

“Nick and Heath have just come home from a four week long cattle drive to San Diego. Now how many cows were there?”

“4000. Not all ours but it wasn’t just us two. We had 25 men with us.”

“How long did you stay in San Diego?”

“Just long enough to get paid, have a decent meal, two good nights sleep, a shave and bath not necessary in that order.”

“So you ride down, stay just two - three days and then return. Now how fun is that?”

“That is my job, Genevieve amongst a few other things. And wasn’t a pleasure trip, it was work.”

“Nick runs the family ranch, Genevieve. Not much happens there which he hasn’t approved of first. When both he and Heath are away it means more work for me and the rest of the family.”

“That explains why you have been in Stockton so much the past month. I was wondering what kept you way from us. Nick you must tell us more since this is completely different from how we live. Imagine being on horse back for so long and not being able to bath or change clothes.”

“Well, it’s not anything for me.” Genevieve put down her glass. “Cousin would you care join me? I need to powder my nose.” Nick watched the women leave and turned to Jarrod.

“I’m sorry Jarrod. I’m really trying hard to be sophisticated as you and not just a rough cowboy. Guess I’m not doing a good job at it.”

“Nick, you are doing fine. If she can’t accept you as you are then it’s her problem not yours. Don’t try to be somebody else than yourself. Just be you.” He pressed Nick’s shoulder. “Come let’s go and wait for them by the door.”

As they were about to leave the theatre for the restaurant someone called out for Jarrod.

“Mr Barkley. Counsellor Barkley.” An older woman made her way through the crowd.

“Mrs Crabtree, how nice to see you. What can I do for you?”

“I just wanted to make sure that our appointment still is on for Monday. I don’t trust that secretary we have.”

“Of cause madam. Excuse me, my manners. Mrs Crabtree my brother Nicholas Barkley, Miss Genevieve Delaware and Miss Henrietta Delaware. Friends, Mrs Crabtree. Mrs Crabtree, we are on our way to Cold Day, perhaps you and your daughter would like to join us?” In his mind Jarrod thought that perhaps Lotta Crabtree could make his brother feel more at easy.

“I have to check with Lotta but I think we might just do that. Why don’t we meet you there in that case? See you later, ladies, gentlemen.”

“Oh Jarrod, why didn’t you tell us you knew Lotta Crabtree.”

“I don’t Henrietta.” Jarrod laughed as he helped her into the carriage. “I have just had contact with her mother and producer. And believe me, only business.”

Once again Henrietta chatted all the way talking about what she knew about Miss Lotta Crabtree being very excited over that she might meet her.  As soon as they arrived and had been to the wardrobe Jarrod stepped up to the headwaiter.

“We have a reservation. A table for four but as we might be joined by Miss Crabtree and her mother I would like a table for six instead.”

“Just a minute Sir.” He called for another waiter, said a few words to him and then turned back to Jarrod. “Ladies, gentlemen, please follow me.” He walked them to a large booth and as they all got seated he placed the menus on the table and left.

“Nick would you trust me to order?” Jarrod looked across the table at his brother. “Or do you see something you really want to have?”

“Jarrod, surprise me.”

“Ladies?”

“Oh Jarrod, you know what I want and I think Genevieve will have that too.”

"Good evening, Sir, how may I serve you tonight?"

“I think we for starters will have 2 seafood platters for two and some white wine to go with that. Then my brother and I will have the baked lamb shoulder and the ladies the Pacific Red Snapper. Red wine?” He looked at the others who nodded. “And for dessert the Bourbon Bread Pudding. We are waiting for two more so perhaps we shall just have some sherry to start with for the women and a scotch and whiskey for us men. If they haven’t turned up in, say 30 minutes, we are ready for our dinner.”

“Lamb?”

“You will love it even if it isn’t beef. There is time to change if you rather have something else.”

“No, I’ll try it. Just don’t say we shall start breeding sheep.” Henrietta started to giggle.

“Oh, Nick what’s wrong with sheep? They are small cuddly animals. Lambs are adorable.”

“You don’t want to know. I’d rather have a pasture with bulls than those creatures. They are trouble” He looked around the restaurant and decided it looked like a Gentlemen’s club he had visited in Washington once with its high ceiling, long mahogany bar with wooden bar stools, brass rail and black & white tile floor. Their drinks came in and before the 30 minutes had passed Nick recognised the older woman heading towards them.

“Jarrod.” He nodded towards Mrs Crabtree.

“Ladies, I’m please you would join us. Please take a seat. We did order but said we would wait and see if you would come.”

“Mr Barkley, it’s a pleasure. My daughter Lotta.” They took their seats and were told what the others had ordered.

“Oh I want the lamb. I’m starving. I just can’t eat before a performance.” Nick looked at the petite redhead wearing a suit that sat next to him. She was just about to whistle when the waiter turned up.  It didn’t take long before the food was served and Nick enjoyed studying Miss Crabtree dig into the food contrasting the other women at the table. By the time dessert had been brought in Lotta ordered brandy for her and the men and sherry for the ladies.

“Now, mother said you had been at the theatre tonight. What did you think?” She lit her cigar.  A discussion started over the different roles Lotta had done. Nick sat thinking, enjoying his brandy and cigar when Lotta looked at him.

“Now Nick, what did you think?” She listened while Nick shared his thoughts on what they had seen. Jarrod were surprised over his interpretation of “The little Detective” and found it really interesting. Lotta was impressed over what he said and how he looked on the characters she had been doing. He told her what he though she should change to be even more believable and she realized that he was right.

“You know, you are right.” She blew rings into the air. “I have to think of how to change things a little.”

“It took some time to understand so don’t take away the girls in the beginning. They kept my interest on the play for some time.” He sneered as the others burst out laughing. “Can’t a man be honest?”

“Oh you are a darling, Nick.” Henrietta dried away a tear from her eye. “Jarrod, I’m afraid it’s getting late and we need to leave. We are leaving San Francisco very early tomorrow heading for Richmond and Christmas with the family.”

“I think it’s time for us all to make it a night.” Jarrod moved to wardrobe to receive the coats and to order three carriages. As the carriage arrived one by one goodbyes were said.

Lotta got Nick to promises to come and see her next time she was performing in San Francisco. When he and Jarrod entered the last carriage and headed for the hotel Nick asked him why he wasn’t using Jarrod guest room as normal.

“I just wanted you to have the best this weekend and besides I’m redecorating the rooms but don’t tell Mother, she never agree with me on this. And before you ask: Henrietta is a very good friend but is to be married to a colleague in May. While he is out of town I promised to keep an eye on her. What time are you leaving tomorrow?”

“As early as possible but I intend to enjoy the bed first. Don’t forget I have Audra’s date in Sacramento on Monday and that means a day of shopping if I know our sister right. I have some things that need to be done at the ranch too. Can’t leave it all to Heath. Are you joining me on the ride home?”

“No, I have the Crabtree’s on Monday but after that I’m on the way. Don’t want to miss the Christmas party. Well, brother Nick, here we are. Sweet dreams.”

“The same Pappy. And thank you for the present. I have had an enjoyable evening.” Nick touched his brother’s shoulder as he left the carriage and walked into the hotel.

Nearly 24 hours after he got to San Francisco he was back at the station. As he stood there waiting he noticed a woman standing at the end of the platform. Feeling that she was familiar to him he stood watching her trying to remember but without success. Her mahogany red hair was braided, her skin tanned and her dress was simple but elegant.

When the conductor called out a final time he stepped on the train. He found a place and stored away the parcels he had. The train was crowed and he didn’t get much room for his body. Trying to find a comfortable way to sit he started think over the women he had the pleasure of dinning with last night and smile at the thought of Lotta Crabtree. He pulled out the playbill that Jarrod had gotten him and looked at the photo of her in a fancy dress. That was not the Lotta he had met last night but still a beautiful photo of her.

Part Four -- December 20

Nick sat in the office trying to sort the figures from the cattle drive when Victoria walked in with a tray with two cups of coffee and some cinnamon buns. She looked at her son as he hung over the books, pen and paper close by and several receipts spread all over the desk. She knew that he was a month behind with his bookkeeping because of the drive and that he also needed to start to plan for the next. And then there were the trips around in the county to buy up more stock. She sighed softly. On top of that was what ever happened at the dance that he didn’t want to tell her or his brothers about.

“Since I have hardly had a chance to talk to you since you got home from the cattle drive I hoped you would join me for a break.”

“Of course Mother. Just one minute please.” He closed the books. “Always a relief when everything works out and nobody complain more than necessary.”

“Knowing you I guess you complained most of all ranchers.” She smiled at him.

“Mother! I did not!” He took the cup and sat down next to her. "How can I thank you for saving my life by talking Audra and her friend out of the shopping trip to Sacramento?”

“Are you sure that was what it was? Well, I guess you are right, knowing your sister.  I guessed that too and understood that it might be asking a bit too much from you, not that I said so to the girls mind you.  I just asked them if they were going to change for the party on the train or wear the same clothes for it. I think they realized that around 10 hours train ride added to several hours in Sacramento weren’t going to make them look their best, rather the opposite.  It did, however, take me some time to persuade them that the party were quite enough, it didn’t need to be more and would give you time to be well rested and fresh for the festivities and therefore much more fun to be with. Audra did agree on that eventually knowing how tried you were when you got home last week.

“I guess I have to make up for it later to the girls, especially if this Chastity is becoming a close friend of Audra’s. Perhaps I can take them to Sacramento later in the spring when things calm down a little.” He chewed on the cinnamon bun and thought for a second before asking. “Mother I have been thinking of that cat. I feel it should be something I should remember but I can’t figure out what. Nether any of my brothers can either so please tell me about the mystery girl or at least give me a clue.”

“You are right. It’s something you should remember but it goes at least 16 years back. I met her again in Sacrament when we there for the State Fair. She has her own business. I think Jarrod should remember her too.” She mused while dividing her bun into smaller pieces.

“16 years ago! Mother do you really believe I can remember all the girls at school because that must have been where I met her? Besides when I was 15 – 16 all girls were interesting in one way or another so to pick one out of, how many can it be, 20 – 30 girls! That’s not a nice clue Mother.” He frowned before he sank down in though trying to picture the girls in the classroom or in Stockton at that time.” Victoria finished her coffee before she stood up and kissed his head. Smilingly she left him in the chair happy over the set up she had done.

“AUDRA!” Nick called up the stairs for the fifth time. They were going to be late picking up Chastity if she didn’t turn up now. He paced around in the foyer while Heath sat on the stairs.

“Why do woman think they have the right to be late and keep us waiting.”

“Dear Nick, it’s our privilege.” Victoria walked in the foyer to calm her sons as she could see by the look on Heath’s face that even he was getting tired of waiting. “I’ll go and hurry her up.”

“Now what kind of person will my date think I am or at least her parents if I turn up late picking up their daughter. And we are picking up Heath’s Benedicte too. AUDRA! Finally.” He flung out with his arms in despair.

“Sorry, I’m ready to leave now. Mother, have a nice evening. Are you sure you don’t want to come tonight?”

“No Audra. I think I’ll have an early evening and let you tell me all about it at breakfast tomorrow.” She nearly pushed her daughter out of the door knowing that her brothers were at the edge of their patience with their sister right now.

“Oh, I forgot.” Audra turned to the stairs again. At the same time Nick and Heath reacted.

“DON’T YOU EVEN DARE!” Nick roared as Heath sprung and grabbed her by the waist and carried her out to the wagon. Audra tried to get out of his grip but he didn’t loosen it until Nick had seen to that the house was well behind them.

“Oh.” Audra pouted and sat with her arms crossed. “I’ll tell Jarrod what kind of brothers you two are.”

“As we care!” The drive into Stockton was quiet and they took the short cut to Chastity’s home. Halting the horses Nick left the reins to Heath, swallowed and left for the door. Mr Chase opened and let him in.

“I’m Nick Barkley. Sorry we are late. I’m supposed to pick your daughter up for the Christmas Party tonight.” He had picked a few of his mother’s roses and gave them to Mrs Chase who had turned up by her husband’s side.

“No need to worry Mr Barkley. I’m not sure that girl is even ready yet.” Mr Chase sighed. “I hope you are not picking up any more.”

“I’m afraid we are. My brother Heath’s Lady and she will not be easy to handle. I guess we will just let the girls do the explaining.” He sneered as Mr Chase laughed.

“CHASITITY! THEY ARE WAITING AND IF YOU ARE NOT DOWN HERE IN A SECOND I’LL TELL THEM TO LEAVE WITHOUT YOU!” Mr Chase had a voice that even made Nick stunned.

“But Daddy, I want to look my best on the first Christmas Party I’m at in Stockton.” Down the stairs came a slender blond blue eyed girl in an apple green dress pulling her white gloves on.

“I’m sorry Mr Barkley for keeping you waiting.” Nick bowed.

“Apology accepted but we must be off. Mr Chase, I’ll have her home in time.” He showed her out to the wagon and helped her up. The girls started to chat at once. Nick looked at them and shook his head, looked at Heath who did the same and mimed: girls and rolled his eyes. Nick got the horses going and they were on the way to pick up Benedicte. Nick felt sorry for Heath but he was sure going to see that the girls did the explaining if Heath got in trouble. He felt his mood sink as he listened to the chatter and he sent another thank you to his mother. ‘Nick, Old man it could have been worse, it could have been all day.’ Benedicte stood outside waiting, all worked up when they arrived. She was about to start when she looked at the girls and sighed, shook her head and let Heath help her up.

“Sorry, love.” He whispered.

“I understand. A look at you sister and her duplicate says it all. Hi Nick.” She gave Nick a kiss on his cheek. “It could be worse.” That brought Nick to a smile that grew into a chuckle. His twinkling eyes then got Heath chuckling and the tension they both had been feeling left.

As they arrived at the Town Hall Jarrod was pacing outside. Worried over what had happened to them. They had left before him and even if they were to pick up people on the way they should have been there when he came.

“Pacing is my job Jarrod. You should be sitting in an armchair arms folded waiting for us.” Nick walked up to him and gave him a hug. “Let me introduce Miss Chase to you.” Jarrod was properly introduced to Chastity and the three couples walked in the Town Hall. The entry hall was decorated with spruce, laurel, cedar, ivy, mistletoe and holly. Everything even picture frames and mirrors were wrapped with evergreen rope. The greenery gave a scent of Christmas.  Nick had to push it a little aside so that he could walk in the room without having to duck all the time. They left their overcoats in the wardrobe and continued into the banqueting hall which also had been transformed into an enchanted winter wonderland filled with decorations such as garlands of popcorn, tinsel and paper chains, paper and lace ornaments, glittering glass balls, angels and several Santa’s.

At one end of the room they could see a large Christmas tree with plenty gifts wrapped in colourful paper and tied with ribbons.  At a few places mistletoes were hanging. Nick was speechless. He had never seen the room like this and was amazed over the transformation but it was a bit too much for him. It did remind him of some pictures he had seen from England so he guessed it was suppose to be like in the old country. He silently prayed that Audra wouldn’t get the idea of doing this at the ranch.  They walked over to the desk that was placed in a corner to get the ladies their dance cards and to see where they would all sit for the supper. Sadly they weren’t placed at the same table. Audra and Chastity tried to get the seating changed but didn’t manage it. The boys saw to it that their names were on the girl’s cards several times and for the last dance.  Audra protested a little but the looks from Nick and Heath quietened  her down. She knew that she had strained her luck earlier that evening and decided that if she behaved for a few hours they might think differently and let somebody else but Jarrod have the last dance. Chastity didn’t mind Nick as her last dance partner, after all she was there with him but she was not going to be kept under the watchful Barkley eye all night. She was going to have fun.

As the music started Nick gave his arm to Chastity and led her out to the first dance of the evening: a march.  Together with his brothers and their ladies and five more couples they created the first group on the dance floor. Soon the floor was filled with several groups of eight. After a quadrille, a waltz and a polka someone tapped Nick carefully on the shoulder and asked if he could step in. Nick happily stepped aside and went for some punch instead where he met up with Heath.

“Boy Howdy, four dances and I’m finished. How is this evening going to be?”

“Let the girls dance, step in now and then and everything will be fine.” He inhaled as he suddenly saw Abigail walking into the room with Jim Andersen. Heath followed his eyes.

“Forget her Nick, she is trouble. She changes partner like you and I change shirts.”

“It’s not as much her as a person but something she and her girlfriends said at the dance. Guess I wasn’t suppose to hear it but I did. I guess seeing her just reminded me of it. Here comes Audra. Nope, my turn little brother. Audra, dance with your big brother?” He held out his arm to her.

“I’d love too but are you sure about it since you never really liked the schottische?”

“Like is one thing, dancing is another. I’m sure you will get a good laugh. Come on lets work up some appetite before the food is served.” Nick managed to handle the dance but was pleased when it went over to a march instead knowing that soon there would be some food served.

As the music stopped everybody found their dates again while the host and hostess of the evening stood by the doors leading to the tables, waiting for the room to calm down. At a signal they opened the doors together and the sight in front of the coupes was breathtaking. Every gentleman quickly led his lady to the table they had been given before hand.

The tables that each held five couples had a centrepiece made of chrysanthemums with sprigs of holly. Around the base of each candlestick wreaths were placed and by each plate was cracker, a little box with a candy and holly leaves. Nick sat down with Chastity and introduced her to the others around the table. They started to talk and soon Nick was chitchatting with Chastity about anything she wanted: dresses, the latest Harper’s Bazarre, decorations and her work with Audra at the orphanage. They were served the first dish which was chicken broth with rice as soon as everyone was seated. Not long after that was down came the roast turkey with sage, onion stuffing and cranberry sauce and the Yorkshire pudding with horseradish sauce. Pots with mashed potatoes, potatoes au gratin, roast chestnuts, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts with almonds and peas were put on the tables and passed around by the couples. Nick was trying to save some room for dessert since he had found out it was Christmas pudding flamed in brandy. After the dishes were taken out to the kitchen he slightly wondered how he would make it to the dance floor again. He felt he had eaten for the whole Christmas. He smiled at Chastity who also had enjoyed the food but most of all the Christmas pudding. He bent over to whisper something in her ear when the evening’s host suddenly stood up and Nick leaned back into his seat.

“Friends, while the food gets settled lets play some games before we continue the dancing. Coffee, tea, brandy and cigar will be served later on in the Gentlemen’s room where even our ladies will be allowed into tonight. As you may have noticed every table has a number. It was not just so that you would find the right table but also so that we can keep the teams separated. Let start with some charades, table one starts. Every table has to have one that shouts out what their guess is, so that we judges have a chance to hear each one of you. Choose who now while table one thinks out a charade.” After playing for an hour everybody was satisfied and everyone at the winning table that contained Nick and Chastity got their first prizes: a small basket with goodies. Nick took care of the prizes as Chastity headed out on the dance floor again.  After leaving the baskets at the wardrobe he met up with his brothers at the coffee table and with a cigar he sat down to enjoy the coffee and brandy.

At two o’clock the party ended and everyone rushed to be first at the wardrobe. The Barkley’s decided to wait until the worst was over and then Heath and Jarrod were to get the clothes while Nick got the horses. As they left the door the hostess gave them all a small parcel from under the Christmas tree.  Nick helped the women up into the wagon before he got seated by the reins.

“Everybody ready to go home?” He got the horses going and felt in such Christmas spirit that he started to recite Tennyson’s Christmas Bells. He had just finished when he stopped the horses outside Benedicte’s home. She and Heath got out and Nick moved the horses a little so that the couple would get some privacy. A blushing Heath got back on and they continued to The Chase property. Nick helped his lady out of the wagon and followed her to the door carrying her prize.

“I hope the evening has been to your delight Chastity.”

“Oh yes, Nick. You have been most charming, I have danced with several nice men and we won a prize. I’m very happy with the evening. Perhaps we can do it again.”

“You never know, Chastity. I have promised Audra that I’ll take the both of you to Sacramento for shopping in April – May, anyway when it is a calm period at the ranch.  Now you go straight inside and to bed. Sweet dreams.” He gave her a brotherly kiss on the cheek and left. Chastity stood by the door looking at the Barkley wagon heading home to the ranch when her father put his arm around her.

“Enjoyed yourself, child?”

“Yes, Daddy. And I’m off to bed now. Nick said he would take me and Audra shopping later on.” She danced up the stairs to her room while her father shaking his head locked up the house.

“Poor man.” He mumbled to himself.

Part Five -- December 30

Heath knocked on Nick’s door and stepped in. Nick was sitting in the armchair by the hearth reading his new Tennyson. He noticed that the map was on the table as was the box he had given his brother on his birthday. Smiling he went up to a chair and sat down.

“Ready for an evening out?” Heath watched as Nick carefully put the book down.

“I guess so. It depends on what is going to happen.” He grinned. “I have done what I was told and …” he opened the lid “… studied this.” He held up the book and Heath chuckled. “Are you coming too?”

“Nope, all on your own on this one. Why, need some help?” He winked at his brother and leaned over and took the book from him. “Boy howdy, you can’t have any bones in your body if you are supposed to do some of these. How …” He turned the book in different angles, moved his head in different positions to figure out some of the pictures. A knock on the door and the book was quickly hidden beside him. Jarrod walked in with some glasses and a bottle. A sigh of relief left Heath and he picked up the book again.

“Getting caught in the cookie jar, little brother?” Jarrod smiled at him and put the things he was carrying down. As he sat down he picked up the map and studied it closely.

“Not many days left to solve this one Nick. Any ideas?” He put the map down again and looked at the book Heath was holding. “Now what have we got here?”

“Homework from Madam Boventry but what kind of exam she has for me I don’t want to think of. As for the map, well, I still haven’t figured it out. I can hardly remember what Audra wore this morning, how on earth shall I remember someone from my schooldays. I guess it has to be a surprise and I just hope it’s not someone I’d rather forget about. ”

“Like Abigale.”

“Yes, like her. Why don’t you two sit there and study the book while I get ready.  Am I supposed to bring it with me Heath?” He rose and got over to his wardrobe and pulled out clean clothes and started to undress.

“Don’t know.” Heath moved closer to Jarrod who had snagged the book from him.

“Why should he? He got it as a gift, didn’t he? Besides if he leaves it at home he gets a reason to go back if she wants it back.  And, and this is the important one, he has two brothers who need to study the finer art of hmmm dance.” Jarrod hid the book in an instant as Audra just opened the door and stepped in. Nick quickly pulled his shirt back on.

“Here you all are. Can I join you?”

“NO.”

“Audra I’m going to change since I have an appointment to keep in Stockton. I would appreciate it if you left. Little sisters shouldn’t be in big brothers room when they change clothes.”

“But I want to be joining in your fun here. It’s so empty downstairs with Mother gone to her friends. Who are you seeing tonight by the way? Isn’t it late to go out for a date? Chastity isn’t home since they have gone to San Francisco so it can’t be her.”

“Audra!” Nick’s patience with his sister had been tried several times since the Christmas party.

“There is nothing going to happen between me and your friend so forget it. And please.” He held the door open and pointed out of it.

“I’m leaving. You are so boring and not very kind.”

“Little sister you just have to accept that sometimes your brothers want to be together with out you. How would you feel if we came in when you were going to change? Audra left and Nick closed the door.

“This idea of Mother’s is giving me big problems. I just don’t get it why the girls can’t understand that I’m not dating Chastity or promised her marriage. You know what I got for Christmas?”

“We know. Can’t help you in this matter. Better let Mother sort it out with them or hope that when the dances start again that the young girl finds somebody else to put her eyes on.”  Nick finished getting ready while his brothers studied the book and commented on every page loudly.

“You two may borrow my book but please keep it from that young lady or you will have some very awkward questions to answer. And I’m not responsible for any of it. Understand? Perhaps you want these too.” He held up the feathers and threw them to Heath and did the same with the garter which landed in Jarrod’s lap. “Now if you excuse me.” Nick stood by the door and bowed lightly to them and left.

As the clock stroke nine he entered Chez Madam Boventry.  He held his hat in his hand while pulling off his gloves. As soon as he crossed the foyer towards a woman in her fifties the chatter stopped. He bowed slightly towards the girls that were sitting in the lounge next to the foyer. Before he even said anything Madam Boventry winked her eye to him and grinned.

“Right on time Mr Barkley. I like that. Shouldn’t keep the girls getting cold. Room nr 5 is ready for you, just go straight ahead. Everything is already taken care of.”

“Thanks.” He walked quickly to the directed room, opened the door and stepped inside. With a big grin on his face and eyes on the three girls inside he slowly shut the door.

Part Six -- January 1, morning

Nick came down for breakfast with a headache after the New Year’s party the night before and still sore from his encounter at Madam Boventry. He was not in a top mood and just wanted to get some breakfast and most of all some dark strong black coffee. As Heath walked in Nick noted that he looked even worse than he did. After a look at each other the two brothers decided that the coffee pot should stay by them and that the rest of the family could get their own. Victoria studied her sons with a smile wondering when on earth they would learn not to drink so much. Not that she didn’t understand them and especially Nick after what happened last night. She had herself taken some whisky just to gather some strength. She mused on the reason over the happenings and decided as long as the boys didn’t bring it up then so wouldn’t she. With a small smile on her lips she decided to tease them instead.

“Late last night?”

“Rather early I think.” Nick mumbled.

“What? Couldn’t hear you.”

“We got home when they should have woken up.” Jarrod sat down at his place. “Please give me the pot; it doesn’t say Nick and Heath on it.” He reached for it again, just to get slapped on the fingers by Nick.

“Get your own, this is ours. We have work to do; you can go back to bed.”

“Nick, I’m not in the ….” Silas came in with two more pots, putting one by Victoria and the other by Jarrod. “Thank you Silas, you are a blessing.”

“Good morning and a very Happy New Year!” A very cheerful Audra more or less danced in for breakfast. She was almost certain now that Chastity had caught her brother even if he for some reason had disappeared after the second dance only to return around twelve and then leave again. Strange but she guessed he had his reason and as long he wasn’t with any other girls she wasn’t going to ask. She and Chastity had worked hard since the Christmas party getting Nick to realize that he was in love with her friend. Audra was going to meet Chastity around lunch and they were going to plan how to interfere with the picnic. That was the last obstacle as Audra could see it. “Chastity was pretty last night, wasn’t she? She is coming over for lunch so you have time to see her before you go to that picnic. Can’t you cancel it by the way? It looks so bad that you are going on a date when you are already spoken for. I’m so looking forward to having her as a sister-in-law.” Nick looked up at Audra with horror in his eyes and hands trembling as he put down the cup he was holding.  Heath quickly put down his cup too and put his hand on Nick’s shoulder to calm him while Jarrod inhaled loudly. Victoria stiffened in her chair and Silas stopped in the doorway with the fourth pot.

“THAT GIRL BETTER STAY OUT OF MY WAY OR ELSE!” Nick pushed his chair back so hard it fell over and hit the floor with a bang as he fled the dinning room.  Heath rushed after him.

“Audra, if and I say IF you two do anything to ruin the picnic today I will personally see to it that you are locked in your room for the rest of the month and that Chastity and you never again see each other. Is that clear?” Victoria fixed her daughter with her eyes as she used a very stern tone, a voice you wouldn’t speak against. Audra looked with panic at her mother. She had forgotten that it was her mother who had given the picnic. “I will also send someone over to the Chase house saying that you are ill and can’t see your friend today. And you young lady will stay in your room all day or until I say anything else. Tonight I’ll discuss with Nick what we shall do over this situation. It has been quite enough how you two have behaved towards him during the past week and you stepped over the line last night at the party. To make it clear to you:  you better NOT ruin my gift.” She put down her napkin and rose to see if she could find her sons before Nick fled the ranch.

“Don’t look at me, young lady. Get yourself another lawyer. This one has already chosen side and it’s not yours. In fact I shall happily help our brother find a suitable punishment for you.” He rose taking the cup and pot with him. He passed Silas on the way to the study. “Sorry Silas, this years first breakfast seems to have gotten out of hand.”

“I understand Mr Jarrod. I’ll prepare sandwiches that you can get when hunger turns up.”

Victoria found Heath and Nick in Nick’s room. They both jumped as the door opened, being deep in the conversation. Nick hid his face in his hands, trying to calm himself as Heath tried to ease the pain and panic he could see in his brother. Heath moved aside to make room for their mother.

“Nick, listen to me. I will not let Audra and her friend get near you today. I’ll have one of the hands go over to Chase and see to that she doesn’t come over here today. Audra will not be able to do anything because when I’m done with what I promised a certain girl to do this morning I’m taking her with me to see Maclulls and I’ll stay there long enough and even longer if it’s necessary.  Get a rest, go for a ride or have a long bath. Do what you need to calm down and feel better. Perhaps that special place is opened today?” She looked at Heath to find out. Heath felt the blush rise on his cheeks.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea Mother. He is still …” Heath whispered but stopped by the look from Nick.

“Pity, it always helped your Father. Don’t worry son. I promise you this afternoon won’t be a disaster, quite the opposite I should think.”

“How can you be so sure Mother? Everything that involves a woman seems to end as one.” He sneered. “With some exceptions.” He looked at Heath and winked.  “I don’t think I can handle any more right now. Perhaps Heath shall go instead so the woman won’t be disappointed at least.”

“Believe me on this, son. “ She placed her hands on his face. “It’s very important Nick that you go there today, you and nobody else. Trust me. Would I lie to you?”

“Ok Mother. Just promise to be gentle when you pick up the pieces after me.”

“Heath, I can do with some help from you. Please get a wagon ready and see that it’s taken to the kitchen door. Silas and I have some work set for us. And I would appreciate if you found a hand to deliver the note to … well you know who.” She turned her attention back to Nick, letting her fingers stroke his cheek. “Get some rest before 2 and then enjoy and make the most of it.”

“If it’s OK with you Mother I want to be the one delivering the note. I can’t wait to see the look on Chastity’s face when she realizes that she won’t be able to see Nick today.” He stood up and walked towards the door where he stopped. ”What if Audra have told her where the picnic is to be and she decides herself to turn up?” A growl from Nick and he sank together again.

“Hmmmm, good thinking. Nick how well does Audra know this place?” Victoria looked at him.

“I haven’t taken anyone there for ages. That is one spot I want to be myself on, to be alone, just fish or lean against the tree and so. I don’t know if she memorised the map. If I haven’t been in my room I have kept it in my safe. The only time I forgotten to put it away was the other evening when Jarrod and Heath were in here when I left.” He looked at Heath.

“Sorry, Nick. I only took care of other items. Perhaps Jarrod did? I don’t think we thought of the map. Is it gone?” Nick shook his head.

“No it was lying on the desk when I got back. I thought you rolled it together and put it there. Hell. Sorry Mother.”

“It’s ok. I’m thinking a lot worse words than that right now. I think I better have a talk with your sister before I write that note. If she has given it to her friend I’ll come up with something.”

Thinking she left the room with Heath close behind her. Nick walked to his safe and opened it. He picked out the map and headed for the barn and his horse. Soon he was on his way to do some thinking, seeking some loneliness and peace.

Silas watched Nick leave the ranch as he was packing the wagon with the things that the young lady couldn’t bring with her from Sacramento. Before telling Mrs Barkley that he was done he added some goodies he remembered that the young girl always had liked when he had packed Nick’s saddlebags all those days ago. When Mrs Barkley had told him whom she had run into at the State Fair in August Silas had for the first time told someone about, what he had discovered by mistake, the young couple’s meetings after school, weekends and school holidays.  He smiled to himself and wondered what Mr Nick would say when he saw her.

“Silas, are you ready? I have gotten Jarrod to see to that Audra stays in her room until I get home and I have gotten the copy of the map that the girls where going use. I can’t believe the length she was prepared to go.” Silas helped Victoria up in the wagon before he climbed up himself. “I’m nervous as if it was I that was going on this date. I can’t imagine how it must be for Mathilda or Nick.” She put her hand in front of her mouth as she realized that she said the name out loud and looked around.  Silas got the wagon going and calmed her.

“Mr Nick left a little while ago. Think he needs a ride. Think this was a good idea, now if they want they can end without any loose ends hanging. Perhaps Mr Nick then can find a nice wife. Or perhaps …”

“Silas, I have met this girl a few times since August. I hope he doesn’t just dismiss her because I have really started like her. Hmmm, I guess I’m just as bad as Audra, protecting my interest.” Smiling they left the house and set of to the river.

Part Seven -- Afternoon

Nick let Coco go at a walking pace as he was early. Earlier today when his mother had asked him if Audra knew about place he had remembered that the only one who he had taken there was Mathilda Andersen. After she had disappeared over night he had never taken another girl there or anyone else for that matter, not even Heath. His mind travelled back and he wondered what had happened. One day at school, the next nobody knew where she was, only that her mother had been killed by a customer during the night. He had asked around as much as he dared, even asked his father if he could help him locate her but no one had been able to help him. Today perhaps he would get some answers? He was feeling a little scared and uncertain.  So many questions rolled in his head like how it was going to be/feel to see her after all these years? Why hadn’t she contacted him? And why had she agreed to do this? So many questions but did he really want to know the answers.

As his heart pondered hard he could feel his curiosity grow the closer he got and he was starting to look forward to their meeting. He thought over what his mother had said about her: living in Sacramento and having her own business, not much. He hoped by his whole heart it wasn’t the same kind of business that her mother had had but it hadn’t sounded so. He didn’t think his mother would sound proud over that. When he was almost there he got off Coco and led him. He still wanted to prolong the truth, still wanted to remember the green eyes twinkling towards him when they met after school.  He saw the wagon from Stockton Livery and noted that the horse was tied to a long line instead of being hitched to the wagon. He saw that she had prepared a line for Coco too and he tide him to it and unsaddle before letting the horse nose around. Coco went directly to the goodies she had put out around on the ground and took a carrot. Nick smiled as the horse looked at him as if Nick disturbed him in his dinner.  He searched for her instead and saw her standing by the river looking out over it. She was holding her arms tight around her as if she was scared and worried. For a while he stood watching her wondering what to do next. Suddenly he realized that this wasn’t very easy for her either and he knew what he had to do. He walked up to her and put his arms around her.

“Hi, Tilde. Fancy that I didn’t recognise you in San Francisco.” He held her close to him and felt that she leaned lightly against him as if she wasn’t sure. She tilted her head a little and looked up towards him.

“Fancy that. I didn’t even know that you had seen me there. Hi and welcome to an afternoon of your choice I hope.” A small insecure smile showed on her lips.  He could see on the traces of red marks that she had been biting her lip as he remembered she always had done when she was nervous.

“I was there the weekend before Christmas. Why this?” Mathilda stood silent for a short moment, not really knowing where to start. She put her hands over his.

“I run into your Mother in August. She recognized me and we started to talk. In the beginning of October she turned up in my shop again and somehow she and Josie talked me into this. I have actually regretted it many times since I don’t think it was right to you to do this. But if it was hard to agree, it was even harder to cancel everything. Mrs Barkley has done so much to get this together; all I have done prepared some food and do the map.” She leaned against his body, felt his arms hold her tight. He felt so warm, strong and safe.

“And who planed the picnic?” She could hear a little tease in his voice.

“Well, I did. I thought it would be the best. Here we can talk privately and when you want you can leave and go home. My train leaves at 7. I remembered that it was so beautiful here. I picked the date after your mother told me when your siblings had picked theirs and I thought that starting the new year with this was a good idea.” She let her finger run along his face. He pulled her even closer to him and nuzzled his nose into her hair.

“I missed you, I tried to find you but nobody knew where you were or what happened. I even asked Father for help.”

“Your father was one of them who where there that night. He and the sheriff saw to that Josie packed my things and then they got a stage-coach that took us to San Francisco. Josie decided that we shouldn’t stay there but continue and we ended up in Sacramento. She has stayed with me all these years except for the once I was in England. I couldn’t notify you because they said that if I contacted anyone not only would Josie and my life be in danger but also the one I contacted. I didn’t want you to get hurt so I let it be. When I understood it wasn’t so to long time had passed and I didn’t think I could. Also I did feel stupid having believed what they said. That’s why I never wrote. Remember Nick I was only 14 when it happened. I just hoped that you not only forgot me as soon as possible but even forgave me in your heart.” Nick turned her around and put his hands around her face, lifted up her chin and kissed her.

“Forgot you completely I haven’t but I must admit I have done my best to do it. Mainly because it still hurts to think about you. Come, let sit down. I have no intention to leave before we are done and I guess it will be about when your train is about to leave. If we are not done, can you stay longer?” He led her to the blanket and pulled her down with him.  He looked around over the food she had brought with her. “Pancakes?”

“From Silas. Mrs Barkley told me that he knew about us but never said anything. I guess that is why you didn’t need towards the end tell him to double everything.” She rose and went to the camp fire and poured up two cups of coffee and brought it back to him.  “I can’t stay longer because a few years ago on the way home from England on the boat I was …” She stopped as she didn’t know how to tell him about what happened. She sat down next to him and looked into the cup and thought about how. Nick let his hand gently stroke her back feeling her tension. He studied her closely and guessed what could have happened. Anger towards who ever hurt her started too built up.

“Tilde. You don’t need to say more. I’m old enough to guess what happened.” He tried to sound calm. She eyes searched his when she heard his strained voice.

“Well …” She took a deep breath and continued. “as I got to Sacramento I understood that I was in the familiar way. Can you imagine the thoughts that went through me? The Madam’s daughter pregnant. I if someone should know how to avoid …” She looked back at him and sneered. “Guess I didn’t listen to ma and her lessons.”

“I’m sure you did but accidents do happened. How long ago?”

“The twins will be 5 in May. Today I wouldn’t want to be without them.” Her tone change as she thought of her children at home. ”They are the joy in my life and the purpose for my living these days. Your mother has met them by the way.  I have worked hard to support us three and Josie. I might not be able to give the standard you are used to but we survive and I can save a little for their future.”

“My mother has a lot of explaining to do when I get home.” He chuckled. “Twins, Tilde? I just can’t imagine you as a mother and to twins. Why didn’t you bring them with you?” He let his fingers run along her face. “I have so many questions and many things I want to know. What have Mother told you about me? Are you in the dark as much as I?”

“She has talked about you like she was selling you to the highest bidder.” Mathilda giggled. “I think I know everything she knows about you, she even told me about some of the girls you have been dating. Must say you surprise me Nick, I would think you had better taste than some of them.”

“I do but that girl left me in a mysteriously way years ago.” He yawned. “Sorry sweetheart. Long night and too much liquid.”

“I guess that might have happened that is why I told your mother to bring some pillows when she packed for the picnic. Here, lie down and get some rest. One of the purposes with today was that you should do what you felt like but it seems sleep is needed. ” He lay down on his back and put his head on her lap. She started to stroke his hair and hum a lullaby. It didn’t take long before he slowly closed his eyes feeling happy over being with her again.

Nick slept for an hour in the comfort of Mathilda’s voice and gentle touch. When he woke up they continued to talk about the years that had passed. Too soon the time got to that she had to leave and Nick made a decision.

“Tilde, can I come with you to Sacramento? I don’t want to let go of you right now. I want to be with you, afraid that if you go I’ll be left behind again. If we hurry I can get home to pick up what I need for a few days and meet you at the station.”

“Please do Nick. I don’t want to leave you either but I must be on that train. I would want you to meet my children because nowadays I belong to a package of three. If the future has something in hold for us it includes them too. And perhaps Josie needs to tell you what did happen that night. I don’t remember anything but what I have been told.” They packed everything together so that it could be pick it up later on as Mathilda had decided with Victoria.  Nick didn’t have much time when he spurred Coco towards the ranch as Mathilda turn her wagon towards the town and the station.

“MOTHER, HEATH.” Nick yelled after them as he run up the stairs. They came into the foyer just as he reached the landing.

“Nick you don’t need to …”

“Mother, have no time. Have to be at the station in less 30 min. Heath get a wagon ready because I don’t want Coco in the Livery for several days, Mother I’ll be in Sacramento for a few days.” He turned around and rushed to his room. Heath headed out to the barn while Victoria smilingly walked up the stairs to help him pack. He had gotten his suitcase out and was pulling out draws trying to figure out what he needed.

“Nick, get your toilet things together and I’ll put down some clothes. The way you are doing it you won’t get anything useful with you.” She walked over and went over draw by draw before she went to his wardrobe. Soon she had packed for him and she watched him as he grabbed the handle and hesitated for a second. “Something wrong?”

“No, I just wondered why the picnic Mother? You could have invited her here or told me were to find her.”

“I had to find a good reason to get her to come to Stockton. That wasn’t easy. I started asking her in August already. She had several good reasons for not coming. Several good reasons for not contacting you. And I understand and accept them all. I just had to come up with something that nether of you would be too uncomfortable with and that she couldn’t say no to. Then came your birthday and I got this idea. When she finally said yes I didn’t think it would hurt if you had some good time on the expense of the others. I have to admit that without Josie Smittens it wouldn’t have worked. She kept nagging on Mathilda to contact you in someway after I met them at the fair.” Victoria smiled at the memory. She and Josie had teamed up and had written to each other several times between Victoria’s trips to Sacramento.

“Father was involved in sending her away and he didn’t say anything when I asked him for help to find her”. He sounded hurt so she put her arms around him.

“Nick, I’ll drive you to the station and we will talk on the way. I’ll tell you what I know and what I have found out about her mother’s killing.  If we don’t leave now you will miss that train and I don’t want you to miss this chance. Perhaps this is the missing piece in your life, the reason that you can’t find happiness or the right girl. Go and find out. If anything nothing else have a good time. Perhaps you can pick up your friendship. A man can have female friends with out being involved with them Nick.” He smiled shyly, took his suitcase in one hand, his mother’s elbow with the other and led her out of his room.

“Get your coat and I’ll meet you on the wagon. I have lots of questions for you.”

“LAST CALL FOR THE TRAIN TO SACRAMENTO! LAST CALL FOR THE TRAIN TO SACRAMENTO! ALL ABOARD!”  The conductor held his arm up in the air ready to signal ‘all ready’

Mathilda stood waiting by the door of the train, biting on her lip, fear building up inside her that he might have change his mind and wouldn’t come. When she felt that she couldn’t wait any longer she turned to climb on board. Just as she put her foot on the first step she heard his voice roar over the platform as the whistle blew for start.

“TILDE WAIT!” She stopped, holding on to the train and turned towards the man running up the platform. She held her breath until he was by her side and as he took her in his arms he kissed her deeply and lifted her on board. Just as the door closed the train left the platform.

Victoria stood smilingly watching the train leave at the end of the platform. ‘Yes, her husband been involved 16 years ago sending a young girl away from Stockton but she had just brought her back.’ She went back to the wagon hoping that in a few days Nick would be back and that he wouldn’t be alone.
