Summary:  Nick meet a woman who challenges him in every way.  (Written in response to a "first paragraph - finish the story" challenge.)

Nick sat at his desk reading the paper, his feet propped up on the corner as he leaned comfortably in the high backed, leather chair. It had been a long day as he and the boys mustered those wild mustangs, but they managed it expertly and corralled them in the temporary corral in the field, waiting for the army to pick them up in the morning. He smiled to himself as he turned the page and thought about the lucrative new deal. He had disregarded Jarrod’s warnings and patted himself on the back for his brilliant scheme.

He rose to get himself a drink.  He heard the front door open and peeked around the corner to see who it was.

“Heath – come and join me for a drink.  We need to celebrate the closing of this deal.”

“I wouldn’t do any celebrating just yet, Nick.  I just came from Jamieson.  He said that he and Smitty were riding back across the area where those horses are corralled.   Seems there was a patch of fence down and the horses were just starting to get out.”

“WHAT!  Did they manage to get them all back in?  Are we short now?”  Nick bellowed at Heath.

“Easy Nick – looks like they got there just in time, besides we do have a couple of extras.  They’re all back where they belong and Smitty stayed put until we can send reinforcements out there.  I organized a few of the men to take turns guarding the corral.”

Nick nodded his approval at Heath’s strategy.  He did not want anything to go wrong with this deal.  He knew this contract could lead to many more.  That is, if nothing happened to mess this one up.  Maybe he should check on those horses himself.

“I think I’ll ride out there with some extra rope.  Couldn’t hurt to do some reinforcing on that corral.  You coming?” Nick asked as he strode out the door.

Heath looked longingly up the stairs wanting nothing more to do than take a nice long hot bath.   But instead he grabbed his hat and followed his brother to the stables.

They rode in companionable silence to where the makeshift corral was located.  Nick saw that a piece of the fence was down and Smitty was nowhere in sight.

“What the?  SMITTY – where the devil are you?  Heath  - quick help me with this fence and start counting horses.”

The two men worked quickly and once the fence was repaired, started the task of counting the horses.

“Seems like they’re all here Nick.  Looks like we got here just in time.  Wonder where Smitty is at though.  He’s usually pretty reliable.  I’m going to have me a look see around.” Heath went back to Charger and was in the process of mounting his horse, when they heard a loud groan.

The two men looked at one another and drew their guns.  Nick indicated with his gun which direction he was going to take while Heath nodded his agreement and went in from the other side.  They heard moaning again and soon discovered Smitty lying there with a large bump on the back of his head.

“Smitty – what happened?  Who did this to you? “ Nick asked impatiently.

“Nick – that you?  I dunno what happened.  One minute I was sitting under a tree and next minute my head hurt like hell.  Didn’t see or hear anything before I seen your faces lookin’ down on me.”

Nick’s brow furrowed as he tried to think who would do something like this.  He didn’t know of any rustlers in the area. Besides, they weren’t taking the horse – they were just letting them go.  He saw Heath was thinking the same thoughts and raised an eyebrow at him.  Heath just shrugged to let him know that he didn’t have any idea either.

“Why don’t you take Smitty back to the ranch?  I’m going to reinforce that fence and then pretend to leave.  I’ll leave Coco hidden in the trees and walk back.  I’ll need you to come back the same way.  What do you say little brother?” Nick asked Heath.

“Sounds like a plan.  But if there’s a bunch of them – don’t be trying to take them on all by yourself.  Wait for me to get back.  Just keep an eye on them.” Heath cautioned him knowing his hotheaded brother was likely to charge right in and try and stop them all by himself.

“Yeah right.  I’m not going to let them take those horses though.  Probably just try to scare them off if they show up before you do.” Nick said knowing that he would do whatever it took to keep those horses.

Heath knew it too but someone had to get Smitty back to the ranch and he knew that there was no way he was gonna be able to persuade Nick to do it.  Oh well, the faster he got moving – the sooner he could get back.  “Come on – give me a hand.  I see his horse is still tied up over there.”

The brothers worked together and managed to get Smitty up on his horse.  Nick handed Heath the reins after he had mounted and watched as they rode back to the house.  Nick got out the extra rope and went to his task of reinforcing the corral.  He went around the perimeter of the fence checking his handiwork.  Satisfied that he had done all he could do here, he mounted Coco as if to leave.  He went a little ways before ducking into the trees.  He tied up his horse and then started walking back to the corral.  He lay down on his stomach with his rifle set beside him.  Now came the boring part – the waiting.  He wasn’t very good at this waiting business.  But there was no way he was going to trust those horses to anyone else after what had happened to Smitty.  His eyes kept restlessly scanning the area around the corral but all was quiet.

After a time, he heard a twig crack behind him and whirled his rifle around.  “Nick – it’s only me - put down your rifle.” Heath whispered not wanting to give them away.

“Boy – you should be more careful.  I could’ve shot you.  You should have given me a little more warning.’ Nick whispered back.

“Didn’t want to give the thieves any warning either.  Any sign of them?”

“Nope – not a blade of grass has moved out there that I could see.  Maybe Smitty scared them off.  Could be they weren’t expecting anyone to be guarding those horses.”

Heath just shrugged again at Nick’s conjectures.  Anything was possible as far as he was concerned.  They’d just have to wait and see what happened next.  He settled in to wait it out much more patiently than his brother.  His patience was rewarded when he saw a shadowy figure sneaking along the tree line making his way towards the corral.  Heath tapped Nick on the shoulder and gestured to the figure.  Nick nodded back and indicated that they should wait until the man was in front of them.

As soon as the man reached the corral directly in front of them, they made their move.  Nick grabbed the man by the arm and spun him around.  He saw that it was not a man but a boy.

“WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING BOY?  Those are Barkley horses you’re letting loose there.  What are you up to?”  Nick roared at the boy.

“Uh – Nick …. “ Heath tried to interrupt.

“Oh no – Heath.  Just cause he’s a boy doesn’t mean he shouldn’t know right from wrong.  I’m talking to you BOY.  I asked you what are you up to.’ Nick continued ignoring Heath.

“Uh – Nick …. “ Heath tried again.

“Well, I’m waiting for an answer boy.  WHY are you trying to turn our horses loose?  You’d better answer me or it’s gonna be the sheriff you’ll be talking to next.”

“Uh – Nick …. “ Heath attempted once more.

The boy spun quickly out of Nick’s hold and took off at a run.  Nick was in hot pursuit and grabbed him from behind and lifted him right off his feet.  He dropped the boy immediately.

“Wait a minute – you’re not a boy.  You’re a girl.” Nick finally discovered what his more observant brother had been trying to tell him.  He looked over at Heath who had that “I tried to tell you look” on his face.

“No – I’m a woman and what’s it to you Mr. Nicholas Barkley?”

“What’s it to me?  I’ll tell you what’s it to me – it’s MY horses that you’ve been letting loose.  It’s MY ranch hand that you conked over the head.  It’s MY land that you’re trespassing on.  That’s what it is to me.  Now I want some answers and I want them fast.”

“And you always get what you want, isn’t that right Mr. Nicholas Barkley.  No matter what the cost to anyone else.  Well, you’re not getting anything out of me.” she retorted.

“Is that right?  Well now, I guess I’ll just have to let Fred arrest you and then maybe you’ll have an answer or two to give while you’re in jail.”

“Oh you think so do you?  Do you really think the sheriff will put me in jail?  I don’t think so.”  She finally tipped the brim of hat back to reveal her face.  She had a belligerent look on her face when she first looked up which quickly transformed into a  beautiful woman in distress.  In a sensual drawl she said, “Oh my sheriff.  I don’t know what to say.  I saw all those beautiful horses and I walked over to have a look and oh my,  Mr. Barkley came charging out and knocked me over and started yelling at me something awful.  I tell you sheriff I was so terrified I couldn’t even get a word out.  I heard Mr. Barkley was something of a hothead, but really sheriff, attacking a defenseless woman like that.  Why I never!” she finished as she batted her long dark eyelashes at Nick.

Nick knew she was right.  When she turned on the charm like that, why hell, he almost believed her himself and he knew better.  But he wasn’t going to let her know it.  “Well, now that was a pretty amazing performance.  Do you do two shows a night or just one?  You’ll have to let me know what dance hall you’re working at.  I’ll have to try and catch your performance one night.” He grinned at her.

“Why Mr. Nicholas Barkley, I had thought you knew every woman in those places, considering your reputation for thinking that you are a great ladies man.  And I believe the operative word there was THINK which you aren’t exactly known for, are you?”

Heath had to stifle a chuckle.  He sure was enjoying this.  You could almost see the steam coming out of Nick’s ears.  He was very angry but Heath knew that Nick would never hurt a lady, so he wasn’t too concerned.  The lady in question didn’t look too concerned either.

“You seem to THINK you know a lot about me but you haven’t told me your name yet.  I guess I’ll find out when we get to the jail, won’t I?”

She looked surprised he was still thinking about taking her into Stockton.  She made to go back to her horse when Nick grabbed her by the arms.  He lifted her in the air and put her almost nose to nose with him.  Heath winced when he saw her place a well aimed kick at Nick’s manly parts.  He immediately dropped her and fell to his knees.  She took off at a run.

“Get her.” Nick said hoarsely.

Heath went up to Nick and shook his head at the obvious pain his brother was in.  There was no way he was going to chase after that woman.  He knew that they were never going to take her to the sheriff so why bother.  Suddenly, he heard the sound of a horse racing towards him.  He spun around to see the woman riding close by and moved to protect the still kneeling Nick.

“I don’t think I’ll be visiting the jail today after all, Mr. Nicholas Barkley.  Funny, you don’t look all that high and mighty right at the moment.  You ride roughshod over everyone in this valley but not over me.  My grandda and I spent months catching wild horses for that army contract.  Our bid was lower than yours too but the army felt that the Barkley name was too important in these parts to offend and gave you that contract instead.  You Barkleys are always spouting off about justice and freedom for everyone when you really mean for yourselves.  I hope the painful reminder of this meeting lingers for a long, long time, Mr. Nicholas Barkley.”  And with that parting shot she rode off into the trees.

“Get her.” Nick tried again.

“Well now, I reckon there’s no use, is there?  What I am going to do with her if I did manage to get her back here?”

“Just y-y-you leave that to me, little brother.”

‘I don’t think you’re in any shape to do much of anything Nick.  I don’t even know if you are going to be able to ride back to the ranch for awhile.  Why don’t you just rest here while I go back to the ranch for the men I was going to put on guard duty before we decided to come ourselves.  I’ll bring back the buckboard so we can get you back home.”

“Don’t need no buckboard.  I can ride my horse.”  Nick said as he tried to rise.  He didn’t quite make it though and he heard the big sigh Heath let out.  “Okay – so I can’t right now but by the time you get back with the men, I’ll be able to.  Just don’t go telling them anything.”

Heath rolled his eyes at Nick and grinned.  Of course, he wouldn’t tell them now.  It wouldn’t be any fun not to have Nick around to really rub it in.  He’d wait until Nick was telling one of his stories then Heath could contribute this one.  Yes, sir, this was going to be a good one.

When Heath got back, Nick was no where in sight.  The horses looked like they were all still there though so he didn’t think that the lady had returned.  He went back into the woods where they had originally tied up their horses and found his brother leaning up against a tree near his horse.  He noted that Nick looked like he was still in a lot of a pain.  He winced again as he mentally pictured that booted foot connecting.

“Sure you don’t want me to go get the buckboard.” Heath asked again.

“I can ride.  Just give me a hand to get up.  I’ll be fine after that.” His stubborn brother replied.

After a few tries, Nick managed to get into the saddle.  He had such a painful expression on his face that Heath relented and went over to his saddle bags.  He pulled out an ice pack he had made before leaving the ranch.

“Here – try this.  Might help some.  If you weren’t so damn stubborn, you wouldn’t be in so much pain anyways.”

“If it weren’t for that witch, I wouldn’t be in pain in the first place,”

“Witch?  I thought she was uncommonly pretty.  She sure did have the most beautiful eyes, didn’t she?” Heath teased.

“Beautiful? Are you crazy?  Some might consider those light gray eyes surrounded by those thick dark lashes attractive but she’s nothing but a she-devil in disguise.”

“She certainly had a nice figure though.  Took you long enough to notice.” Heath continued teasing.

“Ugh” Nick groaned as the horse started walking up hill.  “Didn’t expect no woman to be sneaking around and letting our horses go.  Some might like short, curvy women but I like them tall and buxom.  Not like that she-devil.  I’m going to find out who she is if it’s the last thing I do.”

“And what are you going to do with her when you do, big brother?  She was right you know.  If you took her into see Fred, she would end up making you look like a fool.  The army will be here tomorrow to pick up them horses and you’d best forget all about her.”

“The army – that’s right.  She said that her and her grandfather had put in a bid but was turned down.  I bet I could find out who else put in bids from Perkins when he comes tomorrow.  Right approachable guy he is.  Can’t be too many and I probably know most of them so it should be a piece of cake to figure out who she is.  And when I do…”

Heath just shook his head.  He knew that Nick was like a dog with a bone and would not give up until he had found out the identity of the lady in question.   What he would do from there was anybody’s guess.  Heath knew his brother better than anyone but Nick still managed to surprise him from time to time.  He had a feeling that this was going to be one of those times.

Meanwhile Nick was visualizing the lady waiting on him hand and foot and begging for mercy.  Yes, he liked the sounds of that.  She WOULD be begging for mercy when he got through with her.  He couldn’t ever remember being this angry at a woman.  Sure – he had been upset a time or two but never like this all consuming rage he was now experiencing.  He could still see her face taunting him from atop her horse.  Not in the least bit sorry for what she had done.  Well, she’d be sorry soon enough.  He’d see to that if it was the last thing he ever did.

Nick rode his horse straight in the barn so he could maneuver himself off without anyone seeing,  The less people that knew about this the better.  He didn’t trust that look on Heath’s face though.  It’d be just like him to bring it up and ask him how he was feeling at the dinner table.  Well, he couldn’t and probably wouldn’t do it if Nick wasn’t there.  Yes, he decided – I’ll just stay in my room tonight and hopefully by morning he’d be better.  If that she-devil had permanently damaged him, there would be hell to pay, that’s for sure.  Muttering to himself, he painfully made his way up the stairs.

Later when the family was seated around the dining room table, Heath was ready to make his move.  He knew this was an opportunity that shouldn’t be missed.  He waited for Victoria to start the ball rolling.

“Where’s Nick?   Have you seen him Heath?” Victoria asked.

Heath grinned to himself.  “He’s in his room Mother.  He got hurt today and he’s lying down to ease the pain.”

“Hurt!  Is it serious?  Should we send for Dr. Merrar?  What happened?”  Victoria asked concerned.

Perfect thought Heath.  Mother is acting just the way I thought she would.  “Well, I don’t know about sending for the doctor but maybe you should go look at him.  You know Nick – wouldn’t let me near him.  Said he was fine but it sure took him a long time to walk up those stairs.” Heath tried looking appropriately worried.

Jarrod was watching Heath and knew he was up to something.  If he was really concerned about Nick, he wouldn’t have waited until now to mention it.  He wondered what was going on.

“I’ll go up right now.  I won’t eat a bite until I’m sure he’s okay.  You go on without me.” Victoria stated firmly as she left the table.

“Now Heath – I hope this is worth it.  You’ve got Mother worried and missing her dinner.  Was Nick really injured?” Jarrod asked

“Oh he was really injured alright but I don’t think he’ll want Mother to look at it.” Heath giggled unable to help himself.  Oh this was perfect, he thought.

Victoria walked straight into Nick’s room and saw him lying on top of the bed in his underwear.  He was holding an ice pack between his legs.  She hurried over to the bed to see what was wrong.

“Nick – darling what happened?  Are you all right?  Should I send for Dr. Merrar?” she asked full of concern.

Nick opened his eyes horrified to see his mother coming towards him.  Damn that Heath, he thought.  I know this is his doing.  “I’m okay Mother.  Uh, I just pulled a muscle.  A little ice and I’ll be fine.”

“Let me see and I’ll be the judge of that.” She said as she tried to pry his hands away.

“MOTHER – I’m fine.  Please just leave me be.  Please!” Nick pleaded as he felt embarrassment wash over him.

Victoria noted the exact placement of the ice pack and the horrified expression on her son’s face.  She knew at once where the injury was and why her son was not going to let her take a look.  Nick was an extremely modest man and there was no way he was going to let anyone examine him there.  She had a feeling that she had been had.  She smiled down at Nick and gently stroked his hair.

“I understand son.  I’ll let you be.  I’ll bring the bell over to your nightstand.  If you need anything, just ring.  I hope you will be feeling better soon.  I’m going to go back downstairs and have a little talk with that brother of yours.”  Victoria reassured him before she left the room.  She started to go back to the dining room but changed her mind.

She went down the back stairs to the kitchen.  Silas was just coming back in from the dining room and she signaled to keep her presence quiet.  She whispered that she would have something to eat with Silas in the kitchen and not to let the others know.  After she had finished her meal, she went back up the stairs only to come back down to the front entrance way.  She saw the others were still at the dining room table so she went to the front door to open and close it loudly.  She hurried into the dining room with a worried look on her face.

“What’s wrong Mother?  Is Nick alright?” Audra asked worriedly as she saw the look on her mother’s face.

“No – he’s not.  I’ve sent one of the hands into town for the doctor.”  Victoria said as she sat back down at the table.  “I don’t feel like eating now but I wouldn’t mind a cup of tea to steady my nerves.  Audra – would you be a dear and ask Silas to bring a pot out as soon as he can.”  She sighed heavily looking down at her hands.

Audra rushed out to the kitchen.  Heath suddenly looked very concerned.  He couldn’t believe Nick would allow his mother to examine him unless he was in dire straits.  Even then, Heath thought.  He must be unconscious.  He cleared his throat to ask, “How bad is it Mother?”

She noticed the blush starting and knew he was hoping that she wouldn’t give a too detailed answer.  Well, he could hope all he wanted.  She was going to teach him a lesson.   “Oh dear – it’s terrible.  The bruising around his groin is unbelievable.  And the swelling – well, it’s hardly recognizable as a man’s penis.  Poor Nick.”

She was right.  Heath choked on his food and was now the color of a ripe tomato.  She looked over at Jarrod to see if he was on to her game or not.  He raised his right eyebrow at her and she raised hers back.  Heath of course, missed this exchange as he had his head down looking at his plate.

“I sent for Dr. Merrar as I am concerned that this injury may hamper him from fathering children.  How did this happen again, Heath?  I don’t think I heard your explanation, dear.” Victoria asked with feigned concern.

“Um – he got kicked – um – you  -  know  - where.  I thought he was okay even though he had a hard time walking.  Maybe I should go up and see him.”  Heath said anxiously.

“Oh no – dear.  He said to just leave him be until the doctor comes.  He must be in a lot of pain to agree to Howard coming.  I think I got that ice pack positioned just right before I left and I don’t want him moving around and shifting it off.  I had to pack a few pillows between his legs just to be on the safe side.”

The blush that had started to fade came back in full force as Heath pictured the scene Victoria was describing.  What started out as a joke had sure turned around fast.  He couldn’t imagine Nick forgiving him easily for the almost unimaginable embarrassment he must have endured.  He’d have to think of a pretty big peace offering to settle him down.  Heath thought that if maybe he could find out who that girl was then maybe Nick would be so distracted by her that he would forget Heath’s part in tonight’s debacle.

“Uh, I better go now.  I, uh, going to relieve one of the men that are guarding those army horses.  I’ll see you later.” Heath said hurriedly as he left the table.

Victoria burst out laughing as soon as she heard the front door slam.  “Oh that was fun.  That’ll teach him to think twice before involving me in one of his practical jokes.”  She giggled again and said, “Did you see the look on his face when I described examining Nick’s injury?  Oh my that was priceless.  I sent Silas upstairs with some dinner for Nick so when Audra went into the kitchen, she would have to make the tea herself.  I would not have dared that conversation if she was here.”

“Well lovely lady that was certainly entertaining but may I ask if Brother Nick is really injured?” Jarrod asked dryly.

“Oh he’s injured alright – exactly where I described but of course, I did not get anywhere near that injury.  Poor Nick, he looked so horrified when I asked to see it.  I knew right then and there that I had been set up by Heath.  He never did tell us what exactly happened, did he?” Victoria mused.

“No – Mother – he did not.  I think I’ll go up and check on Nick.  Maybe I’ll get the whole story out of him.  But if he’s been the butt of one of Heath’s practical jokes, he might not be too forthcoming,.  You know how he hates not coming out on top.  Oh well, here’s Audra with your tea.  I will update you later.”  Jarrod replied as he excused himself from the table

When he entered Nick’s room, he saw Nick seated at a small table eating the dinner that Silas had brought up.  He looked to be bare legged with a blanket over his lap.

“Good evening – Brother Nick.  I heard you are not quite yourself tonight.  What happened?”

“Nothing – just got kicked is all.  Hurt like hell but it’s starting to ease up some now.  That two bit jackal of a brother of ours sent Mother up, didn’t he?” Nick barked.

“Well now Nick I wouldn’t be too angry if I was you.   You see Brother Heath does not seem to recognize that you do not include Mother in one of your practical jokes without her consent.”  Jarrod went on to describe the scene at the dining table in full detail.

Nick had to stop eating as he was laughing so hard.  “Oh stop – it hurts when I laugh.  Now how can I really turn the screws in on that boy?  Need to teach him a lesson myself.”

“Nick the only reason I told you what happened was to get you to see that Heath already got what was coming to him by the expert, no less.  No, it’s time to drop it now.  If anyone is going to turn the screws as you so eloquently put it, it will be our dear mother and no one else.” Jarrod lectured sternly.

“Yeah, yeah – whatever you say big brother but I’m not going to forget this.  My turn will come and I will not be fool enough to involve Mother without her consent.” He started chuckling again as he pictured his brother turning all kinds of red.  “Did Mother really say penis?”  He laughed even harder and had to try to control himself as it hurt to laugh.

Nick stayed close to the ranch the next morning, glad that he had the excuse that he had to wait for Perkins and his troop to arrive.  He didn’t think he could sit a horse all day even if he did feel better.  Heath was making himself scarce too.  Nick figured that he would hide until at least dinner.  He still hadn’t thought of a good way to get even with him yet but he would.  Oh yes he would and that boy would regret embarrassing him like that.

Around mid morning the army finally arrived.  Nick took Captain Perkins into the study to sign the paperwork while his men were looked after by Silas.  Nick casually asked if these were all the horses they needed.

“This is my first stop on my buying trip.  I am supposed to try to find at least sixty more horses.  Why do you have any more for sale?” Captain Perkins asked.

“No – I don’t but I heard tell that someone else in the area had already gathered the horses you needed before they put their bid in.  Might be willing to sell them to you cheap now.” Nick hoped that Perkins would give him the information he wanted without further digging.

He did.  “Oh the MacGregor’s you mean.  I was going to pass by there anyway and see what they had available.”

“MacGregor did you say?  Name’s not familiar.  Oh wait a minute – is that the ranch east of Stockton by the river?”

“No – I don’t think so.  Must be another MacGregor.  The directions I got were to go north of Stockton and then head west along the railroad tracks.  I think the ranch is called the Bonnie Belle.”

“Oh those MacGregors.  Yeah I know who were talking about now.  Would you like a drink before you head out again?” Nick asked as he was doing cartwheels inside.  Yes – he thought – I got you now you little witch.  Just you wait until I get my hands on you.  Might be even better if a torment you some first.  “Why don’t I go along with you just to make sure you find the place okay.  Besides, I haven’t seen those neighbors in quite a while.  Yes, I think I should join you this morning.”

Nick was quiet on the way to the Bonnie Belle ranch.  He was busy plotting  what he would do when he got there.  After they had arrived, Nick noted with approval how well maintained the ranch house and yard were.  He saw on older man rise from his seat on the porch and come down the stairs to greet them.

“Captain Perkins, sir.  Are you Fergus MacGregor?” the captain identified himself.

“Yes I am laddie.  Are you the one buying the horses for the army?” the man said shifting his gaze towards Nick.

“That is my job sir.  Mr. Nick Barkley here was kind enough to suggest that I take a look at your horses and offered to escort us.”

“Nicholas Barkley is it?  Well, welcome to the Bonnie Belle.  It’s a pleasure to finally meet you.” He said as he shook Nick’s hand.  “I’ve met your dear mother and sister at the school meetings with my dearly departed wife and your brother, Jarrod has handled some of my affairs for me.  It’s about time we finally met. What would you like to do first gentlemen – see to the horses or have lunch?”

“Sir – if you don’t mind – I’d like to look at the horses first and then I can send my men on to the temporary barracks we set up.”

“Fine – fine – just let me tell my granddaughter that we having a couple of guests for lunch.”  Fergus said and he went back up the porch.  He opened the door and yelled in, “Rhianna – Rhianna – SET TWO MORE PLACES FOR LUNCH – WE HAVE COMPANY.”  And with that he joined Nick and Captain Perkins.

Nick thought this morning couldn’t get any better.  He glanced back to see if the she-devil had looked out the window to see who the company was but so far there was no sign of her.  Fergus was leading them to a paddock on the side of the barn that was hidden from view from the house.  He had hoped that he would have the element of surprise on his side and it looked like Lady Luck was finally starting to smile at him.

Captain Perkins and Fergus went in the paddock to look over the horses.  Nick stayed by the railing and had a good look around him.  He saw that his first impression was correct.  This ranch was well cared for.  The horses’ coats were groomed to a high shine and looked very healthy.  This MacGregor fellow seemed to be alright but that granddaughter of his was still going to pay.  After the captain and Fergus had settled their business, the three men headed back for the house to have lunch.

“Gentlemen, come in , come in.  Would you like a wee drop before we start on lunch?  You can clean up at the sink there while I pour.  Where’s that granddaughter of mine?  RHIANNA – come here lass.  Our company be awaiting.” Fergus bellowed.

Nick kept his back to the rest of the room while he took his time washing up.  He wanted to make sure that the she-devil was in the room before she saw him.  There was no way he was going to let her come up with some excuse not to join them.  He was rewarded for his patience when he heard her enter the room.  Fergus introduced her to Captain Perkins and was starting introductions to Nick when he turned around.

“No need for introductions here Fergus – Rhianna and I have already met.  Haven’t we fair lady?” Nick said thoroughly enjoying the discomfort he saw on her face.

“Rhianna lass – you never mentioned that you had met Nick before.  Where was this dear?”

“Oh she probably thought it wasn’t worth mentioning.  Isn’t that right Rhianna?  It was hardly a MEMORABLE occasion.   But I will never forget it.”  Nick continued taunting her.

Fergus looked at his granddaughter in confusion.  It wasn’t like her to be so quiet and so far she hadn’t said a word.  Also there seemed to be sparks flying between these two.  But they couldn’t know each other very well or Rhianna would have mentioned something to him.  Wait a minute – she didn’t – did she?  Fergus knew Rhianna well enough to know that she could have carried out her threat to sabotage this deal for the Barkleys.  But the captain said he bought all the horses from them and needed his as well so the deal must have gone through.  His eyes narrowed as he tried to assess the situation and decided he would have to wait until they were alone to find out more information.  Meanwhile, he would have to hope that they could get through this luncheon without mishap.

“Sit – sit laddie.  Rhianna sets a fine table.   Come on lass – let’s feed these hungry gentlemen.” Fergus urged her.

Rhianna stiffly served the meal as her grandfather kept up a steady stream of conversation with the captain.  Mr. Nicholas Barkley just kept taunting her with those damn eyes of his.  She would have liked nothing better than to be able to dump his plate right over his head but with her grandda sitting there what could she do?  And HE knew it.   Blast him anyway.   Well she would show him he couldn’t scare her.  She would sit down and be a gracious hostess even if it killed her.

“Fergus – how long have you and your granddaughter been on this ranch.  I seem to remember it belonging to the Tanners?” Nick fished for more information.

“Well lad, my dearly departed wife and I bought this place from the Tanners – oh about four years ago.  Rhianna came out nearly six month ago when Mary died.  Thought I needed looking after she did.  Not that I’m complaining mind you but she’s barely left the ranch since she came.  A young girl like her needs company of young ones around her not just an old Scot like me.” Fergus smiled at the embarrassed Rhianna.

“Now Grandda – I’m liking it just fine the way things are.  No need for anything to change.” She put in hurriedly.

“Well now – Fergus does have a point there.  There’s a social at the church on Saturday night that would provide a good opportunity for Rhianna to meet some of the young people around here.  I would be most honored to escort her, sir.” Nick plotted deviously.  If he could just get her away from here, he might be able to exact his revenge.

Rhianna was aghast at his nerve.  Why that dirty lowdown snake.  Here he was sitting as pleasant as could be when she knew he was up to something.  She couldn’t let him get away with this.  “Why Mr. Barkley – that was most kind of you to offer but I am not really interested in socializing right now.  Thank you for your invitation anyways.”

Fergus on the other hand let out a sigh of relief.  If Nick was inviting his granddaughter to the social, everything must be alright.  “Rhianna dear – don’t be too hasty.  You need to get out and have some fun.  She would be honored to go to the social with you Nick.  It’s past time that she went out and had a little fun.” Fergus interjected.

Wonderful thought Nick.  “No sir – I’m the one who is honored to be able to escort the lovely lady.  I’ll be by around seven on Saturday to pick her up.  I should be heading home now but I want to thank you for the lunch.  It was certainly an enjoyable experience.” Nick said as he made a hasty escape.  He did not want to give her the chance to back out.

As Nick rode home, he smiled to himself.  One down – one to go.  Now all he had to do was come up with something to pay back Heath.  And it had to be good – maybe he should get some ideas from the expert he thought with a chuckle.

Nick timed his arrival at dinner to miss the before dinner drinks ritual.  He gave his apologies for being late and hurried to the table with others.  He saw Heath give him his lopsided grin to which he returned an evil looking smile.  He was satisfied as he saw Heath understood that his part in last night’s fiasco was not forgotten.  Now he would be worrying about whatever revenge Nick thought up.  Good, thought Nick, it would set him to looking over his shoulder for awhile.

“Well Brother Nick – I saw the army set up just out of town when I was returning home.  Did the army take all the horses?” Jarrod inquired.

“Yeah – they’re off our hands now and it was a very lucrative exchange.  VERY lucrative.” Nick said as he looked at Heath.

“Where did you and the Captain Perkins ride off to?  You were gone quite awhile with him.” Victoria asked.

“Oh – I rode with him to one of the other bidders on the contract.  Seems he needed more than just our horses.   I believe almost everyone here is acquainted with them.  It was a fellow by the name of  Fergus MacGregor. “ Nick said as he made a point of looking at Heath again who was avoiding eye contact with him.

“Oh yes – lovely man.  His wife Mary is sorely missed.  She was one of those people who got involved and tried to make a difference.  I heard he had his granddaughter living with him now.”  Victoria answered.

“Yes he does and I am escorting Rhianna to the social on Saturday night so Jarrod or Heath will have to drive you and Audra into town that night.”   Nick tried again to catch Heath’s eye.

Oh no thought Heath.  He’s already found out who the lady in question was and that meant that he had to find a few aces up of his sleeve to ward off a counter attack.

“Oh that will be nice for you son.  I heard she’s a lovely girl although, I haven’t met her yet.  It seems that she sticks pretty close to home.”

“Oh she’s lovely alright and I aim to show her a real good time.  Yes – a real good time – a night she will never forget you might say.”  Nick smiled again.

Victoria was confused by the mixed signals she was getting from Nick.  He seemed to be very happy to be escorting Fergus’s granddaughter but he did not have same besotted look on his face that he usually got when he was attracted to a lady.  No – it was different.  She would have to pay close attention on Saturday to see what this was all about.

Nick arrived promptly at seven to pick up Rhianna.   He was hoping Fergus wouldn’t fall for the headache routine or any other excuse she might have come up with to avoid him.   Time had dragged slowly this past few days as he waited to exact his revenge.  He thought he could kill two birds with one stone tonight at the social.  He had figured out his plans for both Rhianna and Heath.

He saw Fergus sitting on his chair on the porch smoking his pipe when he arrived.  Fergus smiled at him and waved his welcome.

“Hi there laddie.  That’s a fine rig you got there.  Come on up and join me.  You know the ladies – never on time.  Rhianna’s still fussing and said she’d come out here when she’s ready.  Would you like a wee drop to keep you occupied?” Fergus asked congenially.

Nick felt a wave of relief hit him.  She wasn’t going to back out.  He politely refused the drink as he felt he would need a clear head tonight and almost instantly regretted it.  Maybe he could have just one to steady himself but before he could voice his change of heart, he saw Rhianna coming out the door.  Nick’s eyes narrowed as he took in her appearance.  She looked the picture of ladylike demureness but she didn’t have him fooled one little bit.  No sir – not one little bit.

She had that dark copper hair of hers all done up on top with some of those curling strands framing her face.  And her dress was one of those lacy concoctions in a silvery blue that had ruffles at the bottom.  Yeah – she might fool some people with that look but not him.  He knew her  true colors and that she was just a she-devil in disguise.

“Och lassie – what a sight you are.  Remind me of my dear Mary when we first started courting you do.  What do you say Nick?  Isn’t she a sight to behold?” Fergus nudged thinking his granddaughter’s beauty had rendered the poor fellow speechless.

“Oh she’s something alright, Fergus.  The lady’s BEAUTY has never been in question.” Nick said  knowing he had scored a point when he saw Rhianna’s eyes narrow at his comment.

“Well you two have a fine time tonight.  Glad I am that you’re finally getting out with some people your own age dearie.  Off with you now.  I’m sure you’re anxious for the festivities to begin.”

“Yes sir – I can’t wait for the evening to begin.  I’ll have her home at a decent hour.  Come along now Rhianna – we don’t want to be late, now do we?”

Rhianna said goodbye to her grandfather and walked stiffly to the waiting buggy.  She suffered Nick’s assistance as Fergus was standing on the porch to see them off.  She would wait until they were well on their way before she would get him to drop this game he was playing.  The silence lengthened between them and she got more and more tense.  Finally, she could stand no more.

“Well Mr. Nicholas Barkley – what is this all about?  I know that this is not a proper date I am on so what is it?  Do you plan to embarrass me at the social or are we even going to the church hall?” Rhianna asked forcefully.

“We’re going to the social alright but as for the rest, well, you’ll just have to wait and see won’t you?”

“You may think you have the upper hand in this situation but let me tell you Mr. Nicholas Barkley, you don’t.  The only reason I am here is to spare my grandda’s feelings and you know it.  But I won’t hesitate to confess my part in this mess to him if I have to.  I know he’d be upset at first but he’ll come around and probably be proud of my initiative in the end.  So don’t push me too far or you’ll be the one regretting it.”

“Don’t YOU push me too far little lady.  You may think that you got off scot free but there’ll be a price you’ll pay yet.  I’ll see to that.  Nobody but nobody treats me the way that you did and gets away with it.  I don’t hold with anyone stealing my property or hurting one of my men.  You want to play the game then you have to pay the forfeit when you lose.  And lady – you lost.” Nick taunted.

We’ll see about that  - Mr. Nicholas Barkley thought Rhianna.   The evening’s not over yet not by a long shot.

Nick felt a reluctant spurt of admiration for the woman beside him.  He’d intimidated many of a man with the voice and looks he had thrown at her tonight.  And here she was just sitting calm as could be.  But the evening was not over yet he thought and then we’ll see how calm she was on the ride home.

The ride seemed to last forever after that.  They both felt relieved when the church came into sight.  Nick pulled the buggy up to the side and helped Rhianna down.  She tried to flounce away from him but he grabbed her arm firmly as he escorted her to the door.  Once inside, Nick took a quick look around to see if the other participants had arrived yet.

Yes, he thought there’s Lavina and there’s Chuck.  Perfect.  He saw his mother and Audra sitting at one of the tables and led Rhianna in their direction.  He performed the introductions and sat Rhianna down with them.  He left them on the pretence of getting them a glass of punch.

Victoria eyed the young woman seated across from her.  She was radiating anger from her every pore and what a look she gave Nick before he left.  Now I wonder what this is all about, Victoria mused.  She politely inquired after Fergus and received a brief response for her efforts.  She looked at Audra to help get the conversation going and was grateful when her daughter started talking fashions with Rhianna after commenting on her dress.  She seemed to thaw a little after that and spoke more naturally.  Where is that son of mine?  He was usually very attentive to his dates even to extremes at times.  No this was not like Nick at all.  Again she wondered what was going on here.

After about thirty minutes Nick finally showed up with a couple glasses of punch.  He made no apologies and soon left again.  Chuck Murphy came to their table and asked Rhianna to dance.  Oh no thought Victoria – not Chuck.  He was the absolute worst dancer that Victoria had ever had the misfortune to dance with.  He also seemed to fall in love with the first girl he danced with and hounded her to death for the entire evening.  Where was Nick?  Chuck would have never had the nerve to ask Rhianna to dance if he thought he was poaching on Nick’s territory.  But Nick was nowhere in sight and the poor girl said yes.  Victoria watched as Chuck stepped on her toes and swung her into the other dancers time after time.  She finally spotted Nick standing near the door with a very satisfied smile on his face.  Why, he wanted to torment that poor girl and he looked like he was enjoying every minute of it.  She would have a few words to say to him when they got home.  She didn’t care what kind of words the two of them had on the way over here.  Nobody deserved being abandoned to Chuck for the evening.

Next thing she knew, she saw Heath being dragged onto the dance floor by Lavina Potter.  Oh no, this evening was turning into a disaster.  Lavina used to have a huge crush on Heath and he had been careful to avoid her whenever he could.  Lavina was a large woman who danced with great gusto.  Victoria had thought that she was over Heath now but she couldn’t have been more wrong.  Lavina kept looking at Heath with her heart in her eyes and kept trying to snuggle closer every chance she got.  She looked over at Nick again and saw he was now laughing whole heartedly.  She smelled a rat.  Nick had engineered this too.  She knew his reason for getting even with Heath but poor Lavina should not have been used as a pawn.  This was going to be a long evening and they were going to have an even longer talk when he got home tonight.  Just you wait Nicholas Jonathan Barkley – you won’t be laughing quite as hard when I get through with you, Victoria vowed.

There was finally a pause as the musicians announced that they were having a break.  She saw Heath hightail it out the door just as fast as he could.  She knew she wouldn’t see him again until it was time for him to drive them home.  Poor Rhianna was limping back to their table with Chuck solicitously escorting her.  Victoria finally caught Nick’s eye and motioned for him to return to the table also.  He reluctantly moved from his place by the door and headed towards them still smiling.  Victoria gently urged Chuck into getting them some more punch and released a sigh of relief when he hurried over the refreshments table to stand in the long line-up.

Nick smiled down wickedly at Rhianna and asked, “So my dear – are you having a good time?”

Rhianna’s eyes shot daggers at him but she smiled sweetly as she answered.  “Why yes, Mr. Nicholas Barkley.  I just love dancing.  How nice of you to tell Chuck that I didn’t really know anyone here and would love to dance with him.”

“Yes wasn’t it?” he laughed down at her.

“Nick – I don’t know what you are up to but since you are the one who escorted Rhianna here – I believe the next dance should be yours.  Do you understand me son?” Victoria said hoping to put a stop to this nonsense.

“Oh I don’t know Mother.  Chuck and Rhianna make such a good couple – I would hate to spoil her evening by depriving her of his company.”

“I couldn’t agree more – Mr. Nicholas Barkley.  I would rather dance with a polecat before I’d dance with you.” Rhianna retorted throwing down the gauntlet.

“Well I’d feel sorry for that polecat.  It wouldn’t stand a chance against you.  No you’re better off with Chuck.  At least he’s too smitten to realize what he’s gotten himself into.”

“Is that right, Mr. Nicholas Barkley?  Well let me tell you that at least Chuck is a decent man which is more than I can say about you?”

Well, well, well, what do we have here? thought Victoria.  They’re both shooting off insults as fast as they can but they can’t take their eyes off one another.  They are so totally absorbed in each other that they’ve totally forgotten that they have an audience listening to their every word.  She sat back and smiled for the first time since Nick and Rhianna arrived.

“I’ve had enough Mr. Nicholas Barkley.  Take me home now or I’ll walk.  I don’t care – either way this evening is coming to an end.”

“And I’ve had enough of this Mr. Nicholas Barkley nonsense.  The name’s Nick.  Use it or shut up.”

“Shut up is it?  And who’s gonna make me?  You – I don’t think so.  You have a very short memory MR. NICHOLAS BARKLEY if you think you’re going to get the better of me.”

Oh no thought Victoria.  Now she’s done it.  You don’t challenge Nick like that and expect him to back down.  She watched as Nick took Rhianna by the arm and escorted none too gently out the door.

Audra watched horrified.  “Mother – do something.  You can’t just let him drag her out of her like that.  Did you see how angry he was?”

“Oh Audra dear, I saw much more than that.  We don’t have anything to worry about.”

“MOTHER – how can you say that?  Do you know what he’s going to do?”

“Of course dear.  You see he’s going to shut her up.”  Victoria smiled.

And he did.

If anyone would have come around to the side of the building where they were, they would have seen Nick and Rhianna in a very passionate kiss.  Not that they were too concerned about anyone seeing them, you see they were in a world of their own as two kindred spirits melded into one.
