Summary: The sequel to "Fences".  Nick is kidnapped and the family gathers together to find him.

Part 1

Heath was coming in from a long hot day in the sun.  He wanted nothing more than a cool bath and cold drink, in that order.  He stabled Charger and walked into the house to see Jarrod sitting in the parlor sipping on a drink.

“Hey there Jarrod – you home for the weekend?” the tired cowboy asked.

“Yes – Brother Heath and I brought Silas and Audra with me.  Mother is staying until at least Monday when she will decide what to do after her meeting with Dr. Ferguson.” Jarrod replied referring to their brother Nick who was in the hospital in San Francisco.

“Mother wired her plans yesterday.  I wasn’t too sure what the rest of yours were though. I ‘m going to take the early train up tomorrow and come back early Monday.  Right now though I need to get up those stairs and take me a bath.  Silas is back huh?  I sure did miss his cooking.  Getting kinda spoiled these days.  Be down in a few.” Heath said as he started up the stairs.  He wanted to ask how Nick was but thought he’d wait until they sat down for dinner.  He was sure that between Audra and Jarrod – it would be a long conversation and he wasn’t up to it right now.

The table seemed so empty with just the three of them.  But it had been even worse when he had been by himself.  He ate in the kitchen most times or at the bunkhouse with the men.  After filling his plate, he asked the question uppermost in his mind.

“So how’s Nick doing?”

“Oh Heath – he’s in terrible pain but won’t admit it.  And I think he’s driving the staff at the hospital crazy.  He just won’t listen to them.  He thinks he can just get out of bed and do what he wants.” Audra replied first.

“Well you know Brother Nick – don’t tell him his limitations because he will do everything in his power to prove you wrong. They told him he had to stay on soft foods or it would upset his stomach.  So he bribed an orderly to get him some real food as he put it and smuggle it into him.  Of course he got caught but not before he had eaten a goodly portion after which he pointed out that he did not get a stomach ache and could they please feed him some real food.  Mother is spending most of her time playing peace maker between Nick and the hospital staff.  They put the casts on this morning so he will have some mobility now. The doctor told him he was too weak to pull himself up yet and not thirty minutes later, he was doing just that.   They have a special wheel chair for him to use once they feel he is ready for it.” Jarrod answered in detail.

“Why do I have the feeling that he is probably racing the hallways as we speak?” Heath said as he gave them his lopsided grin.

“Because he probably is Brother Heath – he probably is.  How are things here at the ranch?”  Jarrod enquired slightly worried that Heath might be feeling a little overwhelmed.

“It’s been a mite busy but all in all things been going okay.  The men have all been going the extra mile.  They feel real bad about Nick and have been trying to make things easier for me.  Davey and McColl have been keeping the cattle and horse operations running smoothly and Mario is doing fine at the winery.  The orchards needed tending and I hired a crew of Mexican workers the other day to get it back into shape.  It looks like we will have a good harvest.  I’ve only been home four days and it seems like a month.” Heath replied tiredly.  He didn’t want to leave the hospital but Nick was fussing that the ranch couldn’t just be left without a Barkley there for an indefinite period of time so he came back.  But he was going to be on that early train tomorrow.  He knew Nick would calm down some when he got there and reported what was going on.

“Oh Heath – I saw the garden out back.  Jerimiah did a wonderful job on it.  Mother is going to be so pleased when she sees it.  I’ve never seen anything like it.  I think she’s going to be the envy of all her friends and we will have requests for Jerimiah’s services.  Is he working up at the vineyard now?  I didn’t see him around this afternoon.” Audra asked.

“Jerimiah has been staying pretty close to the winery during the day.  I think he comes to work on the garden at night.  He feels pretty bad about what happened to Nick and thinks the men consider the whole mess his fault.  I tried to talk to him that first night but his guilt is too powerful right now.  I’m going to ask Nick if I can bring him up to see him next weekend and see if that helps.  I didn’t want to ask him to come tomorrow as I wanted to give Nick a chance to heal a bit more before he sees him.” Heath looked at Jarrod for confirmation.

Jarrod looked thoughtful for a moment and then replied, “Excellent idea – Heath.   It might be just what Jerimiah needs to get past his guilt.  I know Nick does not hold him responsible.  If I remember correctly, one of his first questions when he regained consciousness was Jerimiah’s safety.  I tried to discuss the upcoming trial with him but he said he didn’t want to talk about it.  I told him it helps if he can over his testimony a few times to make sure he wouldn’t leave anything out and he gave me that intense look of his and said that I had nothing to worry about - he isn’t likely to forget anything.  I stopped in to talk to Fred about the wire he sent me before we came home.  He said the trial is set for two weeks from yesterday and he was hoping Nick would be able to testify even though that kid had spilled everything.  He said that those other two had hired some slippery lawyer from San Diego and he wanted to make sure that the barn door was nailed shut properly as he put it.”

“Guess we won’t find out until Monday.  Mother said the doctor might let Nick come home for a period before he has to go back.  Seems to me that he would recuperate here faster if they do allow him to come home.  He didn’t want to go in the first place.” Heath said quietly remembering that nightmare train ride into San Francisco.  He had been so worried that Nick wouldn’t even make it there never mind the surgery awaiting him.  “Well, I don’t mean to be rude but I’m powerful tired and I’m just going to go up to bed now, if you don’t mind none.”

“No Heath – we understand – don’t we Jarrod?  You get some rest.  I’m staying put until I hear from Mother and Jarrod is taking the early morning train on Monday so you will probably meet at the train station in Stockton.  Don’t worry about keeping us company.  Jarrod’s gin game is coming along quite nicely.” Audra teased her brother.

The next morning Heath went straight to the hospital from the train station.  He was walking down the hallway to Nick’s room when he saw Dr. Collins standing outside in the hallway.

“Good morning Doctor.  How’s the patient?” Heath asked quietly.

“Good morning to you Heath.  He’s finally resting.  I know you probably just got back but could you wait awhile before sitting with him.  He had a very restless night and I would like him to sleep a little longer.” Dr. Collins replied.

“Is he getting worse? I knew he’d push himself too hard.” He said worriedly.

“Why don’t you come have a cup of coffee with me and I’ll bring you up to date?”

“I reckon that sounds pretty good right now,  If it’s no bother, doctor.”

“No bother at all.  I’m going off duty now and I usually go to the restaurant down the street to unwind before I go home.”

Heath followed Lara to the nursing station as she brought back the charts she had been carrying.  He waited patiently while she gave some instructions to the nurses and signed some papers.  Finally, she was ready to leave.

“Sorry to keep you waiting Heath.  Let’s go before I get stopped again.”

“Don’t mind waiting doctor.  I know you’re busy.  I appreciate you taking the time in the first place.”

“Make it Lara why don’t you?  I have been on a first name basis with all of you to lessen the confusion of all the Mr. Barkleys.  It doesn’t seem right that you don’t use mine.”

Heath nodded his agreement as walked out of the hospital.  The restaurant seemed to be a favorite of the hospital staff as most of the clientele had white uniforms on.  They found a table in a quiet corner and sat down.

“If you’ve already had breakfast, I can recommend the sticky buns.  I must confess that I have one almost every morning when I come here.”

“Thanks for the suggestion but I best just have coffee.  I had a full breakfast on the train that Silas packed for me.”

Lara placed their orders with the waitress and waited until she left to begin.

“Nick is pushing too hard but that wasn’t the problem last night.  Dr. Ferguson put on the full casts yesterday and he was having a hard time getting comfortable.  I finally put the restraints back on his legs.  You see every time he tried to move in his sleep he would knock one leg into the other and hurt himself.”

“He’s going to find them a mite cumbersome isn’t he?  How long do they have to stay on?  Heath asked concerned.

“Oh about five to six weeks.  Maybe longer.  It will depend on how fast he heals and of course, how well he follows instructions.  If this past week is anything to go by then it might be even longer.”

“Been giving you a rough time has he?” he grinned knowingly.

“Not a rough time exactly but he certainly is chafing at the bit as your mother put it.  It’s remarkable that with all of his injuries that he has the strength he has.  Usually patients in his condition are eagerly awaiting the painkiller we hand out.  Your brother argues with every nurse or doctor who tries to inject him.  He says it makes him too groggy and he’ll only take it if he really needs it.  It’s driving the staff crazy as he is so much easier to handle when he’s had an injection plus he needs the rest if he is going to heal properly.  One of the nurses made a sign to put up at the end of his bed.  It said “You can leave this damn bed when the damn doctor says so and not one damn minute before”.  We all laughed when we saw it but of course, we wouldn’t let her put it up. That brother of yours sure is something, isn’t he?” she chuckled thinking of his antics.

Oh no thought Heath.  She seems to be sweet on Nick.  I was hoping that the spark I felt was mutual.  She’s just being nice to me but it’s Nick that she is really interested in.

Lara saw something shut down in Heath.  One minute he seemed in tune with her and the next he had put an invisible wall between them.  I wonder what I said to provoke this reaction she thought.  She had been sure that there was a shared attraction between them and had thought that the timing had been lousy with Nick in such critical condition.  That certainly was no time to be starting a romance but now with Nick on the mend, she thought that they could explore the possibilities.  It had started off that way but she couldn’t think of what she’d said to make him back away like he did.

Heath did what he normally did when he was uncomfortable and stayed quiet.  He was glad when the waitress finally came with their order.  He just wanted to drink his coffee quickly and get back to the hospital.  He thought he saw a question in Lara’s eyes before she seemed to retreat back into her professional manner.

“I think it’s possible that Dr. Ferguson will release Nick at the end of the week barring any complications.  We all feel he will recuperate better in his own environment rather than in the hospital.  He’ll have to come back though to have the casts removed and stay for another couple of weeks of therapy.  I have to say again how remarkable he is for the progress he’s already made.  It will sure seem quiet once he’s gone.” She said hoping to get the conversation going again.

Heath sighed inwardly and said, “Well we have to thank you for the fine care you all have given him.  He is something special and we’re glad to have him back. You might want to come visit him at the ranch sometime if you can just to see if he is not overdoing it though.”  He thought that Nick deserved somebody real special and he couldn’t think of anyone better than this doctor lady sitting here before him.  He felt a tightness in his heart at the thought of the two of them together but he would not stand in their way even if it caused him pain.  “I best be getting back to the hospital now.  I reckon you have better things to do than talking to me.  Thanks again for all you done doctor.”

Lara stayed seated after they said their goodbyes.  She pondered his invitation to the ranch.  It seemed to be politely spoken but she detected a reluctance on his part for her to accept.  He certainly kept sending her mixed signals.  She didn’t know where to go from here.  She also didn’t know why she was so intent on pursuing this man.  He wasn’t her usual type at all.  But there was something that beckoned her to him.  All she had to do was look into those beautiful blue eyes of his and she felt something melt inside that she had never felt before.  Well, she didn’t make it as the first lady doctor in her class by being a quitter.  She wasn’t going to give up that easily and she vowed she’d find out what made that man tick if it was the last thing she ever did.

Back at the hospital, Heath made his way to Nick’s room.  He saw that Nick was still sleeping.  He quietly slipped into the chair beside the bed and prepared to wait patiently until his brother woke up.  He replayed the conversation with Lara over again while he watched Nick sleep.  He decided he had done the right thing to step aside.  Nick had just gone through hell and back and sure could use something to be happy about.  He had just about lost him forever and wasn’t going to do anything that might put a strain on their relationship now.  After what they had gone through the past few months even before the nightmares started had showed them both that they needed one another too much to do anything that would put them at odds again.

Heath thought this might be a good time to ask Nick what he meant when he woke up from that coma.  It sounded like he was saying something about their father not knowing something.  It seemed like they hadn’t had a moment alone from the time he woke up till the time he left to go back to the ranch.  It had been sorta festering in the back of his mind though and he’d felt like he should take advantage of finally having Nick to himself.  He finally saw Nick begin to stir to wakefulness.

“Hi there.  Glad you’re back little brother.  Did you bring me some real food?” Nick asked when he saw Heath sitting there.

“Hi yourself big brother.  Nope – didn’t bring any food yet.  I heard tell they was starving you here so I was planning on bringing you something later on today when I figured it would do the most good.  How ya doing otherwise?”

“Best as can be expected with these torture devices on my legs and no food, I guess.  I can’t stand being in this bed any longer and I want to go home.  Heath can you please ask them when I can go home?  I don’t need to be here to heal.  I can do that at home without all these people poking and prodding me constantly.”

Heath shook his head at his obviously frustrated brother in sympathy.  He knew exactly how he felt.  Why people thought a body should rest to heal and then poke at them constantly was a mystery to him.  “I know what you mean Nick.  Can’t abide these places either.  I was talking to Dr. Collins before you woke up and she said that they might let you come home at the end of the week if you behave yourself.  Heard you got some fancy wheelchair to get around.  Where is it?”

Nick grumbled, “Took it away from me.  That pesky Nurse Montgomery said I was overdoing it and hid it away somewhere last night.  She is sure one cold fish that one is.  Can’t seem to get around her no matter how hard I try.  But enough about me.  What’s happening at the ranch?”

Heath briefly wondered if she was the one who made up that sign before he started updating Nick on the current happenings at the ranch.  He patiently answered Nick’s questions and brought out his little book to mark down some of the information Nick was firing at him.  I don’t know how he remembers all of this, he thought.  I sure need this book to keep everything straight.  When they had finally exhausted the conversation on ranch business, Heath finally asked the question that had been plaguing him.

“Nick – do you remember anything from when you were in the coma?”

Nick hesitated before answering, “What do you mean?  What are you asking about?”

“Well, when you woke up you were mumbling something that I’m not too sure I heard rightly.  Was just wondering if you remembered is all.”

Nick did remember bits and pieces but it kept getting harder to recollect the experience.  But he did know what Heath was asking about and felt he had the right to know about it.

“Yeah, I remember some but the whole thing feels like a dream now and is kinda fading, if you know what I mean.  I was in this place that’s kinda hard to describe.  Sorta felt like I was there but not there.  Damn but I don’t know how to tell this so I might as well just come right out and say it.  Father was there too.” He pronounced to the startled Heath.

“Are you saying you talked to your father?”

“OUR father Heath.  Yes, I talked to him but the memory of exactly what we said is fading.  Like I said, it sorta feels like a dream that I can’t quite grasp the full meaning.  I just remember that I feel more peaceful about him than I have since I found out about you.  There’s only one thing I’m sure about and that’s that he didn’t know about you and is full of regret about it.  Just felt you should know that for sure.  I didn’t know what that letter said that you and Mother found in Strawberry but he didn’t know.” Nick looked closely at Heath worried that he would be upset by this conversation.

Heath was not surprised at his brother’s revelations.  He had felt his mother’s presence a time or two when he had been in a bad way.  He saw the concern on Nick’s face and leaned over to pat his arm reassuringly.

“No need to fuss about it Nick.  I guessed that from his letter to my mother.  I guess since then I kinda thought he should have followed up some with her just to make sure she was alright.  It’s just that my mother was so sick most of her life that I wish he could’ve eased her some is all.  I still have a hard time thinking about him without letting anger guide my  thoughts.  I figure that we won’t ever see him the same way.  You had a whole lifetime with him and your memories just as I have with my mother.” Heath revealed.

“Good morning Mr. Barkley – glad to see that you are up.  Would you like your breakfast now?” Nurse Montgomery asked as she interrupted them.

Damn thought Nick.  He was just starting to open up and he knew once Heath clamed up again that he it would take a stick of dynamite to get him talking again.  That pesky nurse’s timing couldn’t have been worse.  He really wanted to continue this talk with his brother.

“No thanks – those runny eggs don’t agree with me.  How about getting my chair and my brother and I could just go on out and get some real food for me?” he asked hopefully.

“Really Mr. Barkley – how many times must we tell you that you are not going anywhere right now?  I’ll see what I can do about getting you something more substantial if you insist but Dr. Ferguson will be the one to the return your chair when he feels you are ready.” Nurse Montgomery replied obviously exasperated as she left the room.

“Well now Nick – she don’t seem too bad.  Awful easy on the eyes anyway.” Heath teased.

“Yeah, well it’s kinda hard to notice when she acts like she takes great pleasure in saying no to me all the time.  A couple of times when I could see that lady doctor was going to relent on a few things, that nurse starts talking her out of it.  Nope hard to see anything else about her after that.” Nick wondered on to get the conversation back to their previous topic.

Heath figured out what Nick was thinking and thought they had discussed that enough for his liking.  He had to sidetrack his brother and fast.  He had a flash of inspiration how to do just that.

“Nick – I have another question that’s been bothering me.  That night – you know when you was getting hurt – did you call out to me?”

“Well, I was kind of out of it until that fellow swung that tree limb into my leg.  I know that I was hoping you would find me but I don’t exactly recollect if I did call out to you or not.  Why?”

“I heard you Nick.  Plain as day – I heard your voice call my name.  Scared the living daylights out of me I can tell you.  Never quite understood what you was talking about before but I sure do now.  What did this Sally May say about this thing you got?”

Nick looked at Heath startled to hear his story.  He didn’t know what to think now.  Did he do that or did Heath have the same “gift” as he did.

“I don’t know what to say.  Sally May didn’t exactly have an explanation for what she calls my “gift” but tried to help me control it or use it if need be.  Maybe she can come visit me when I get home and I’ll talk to her about it.  She is always saying she doesn’t have all the answers but maybe she’ll have one this time.”  Nick over at his brother hoping that he wouldn’t start going through what he had.  He wouldn’t wish this ‘gift’ on anyone.  “Kinda spooky isn’t it?”

“Yeah – Nick. Don’t rightly know if that’s how to describe it but it’ll do.  I’m just thankful that whatever happened did though.  I don’t think I would have found you as quickly without it and for that I’m grateful.”

“Yeah – me too little brother.  I don’t remember too much after they finished with me but I remember seeing your face above mine sometime later.  Don’t know when that homely puss of yours ever looked so good.”

The both sat quietly for a moment lost in their memories of that terrifying night.  Each had their own separate thoughts but the one belief they had in common was their gratitude that their bond was as strong, if not stronger than before.

Part 2

The brother’s spent a companionable morning together but the conversation did not get back to the topic of Tom Barkley.  Nick was frustrated that he could not remember more of his time with his father.  He was certain that there was more he could tell Heath if he could just remember.  Flashes of conversation would come back to him but then would disappear as quickly as they had come.

Dr. Ferguson came into the room around noon.  “Hear you had a restless night Nick.  I know these casts are awkward but they do mean the difference between being able to walk and being permanently crippled.  So keep that in mind when you are fed up with them okay?”

“Hey Doc – can I have my chair back now?  I got my brother here to look after me and I sure could use some fresh air.” Nick pleaded with the doctor.

Dr. Ferguson shook his head in amazement at the request but then remembered that this man practically lived his life outdoors.  This confinement was probably as painful as the actual wounds he had sustained.

“Okay Nick.  I’ll have your chair brought back – on one condition.”

Nick interrupted, “Yeah, yeah – whatever you say.  Just let me out of here.”

“Don’t be so quick with your promises.  I want you to give me your word that the moment you start feeling tired that you will tell your brother to bring you back up to bed.  If you continue to overdo it, I won’t let you go home on Friday as I planned or get you started on crutches on Monday.    Now do I have your word?”

Nick didn’t look too pleased but answered, “Yeah – you have my word.”

“Good – now let me take a look at those stitches on your head.  I may be able to take them out this morning.”  Dr. Ferguson said as he moved Nick’s head to the side.  He took out a pair of small scissors and quickly removed the stitches.  “There you go.  They must have been starting to itch.  I’ll go release your chair so you can enjoy your afternoon with Heath.  Remember take it easy.”

Nick looked pleased with himself but Heath was wondering whether they should send a message to Victoria letting her know their plans.

“Uh Nick – did Mother say when she was coming by?”

“I told her last night not to bother coming in this morning.  I figured you would come straight from the train and there was no need for both of you.  Besides, she needs some time to rest herself.  She looked pretty tired to me but you know her, she wouldn’t admit that this whole mess has taken a toll on her. I guess you think we should send her a message.”

“Yeah – why don’t I take care of that while we wait for your chair.” Heath said as he left the room only to bump into the very person they were just talking about.

“Mother – we were just going to send you a message.  Dr. Ferguson was just here and gave the okay for Nick to use his chair to go outside for awhile.” Heath explained as he bent down to kiss her cheek.  He observed that she still looked tired and hoped he could give her a real break this weekend.  That is if she would take it.

“Going outside were you?  I’ll just bet that he’d have you take him to that restaurant down the street faster than you could blink an eye.  Still starving son?”

“Yeah – I am a mite hungry.  They serve portions so small they wouldn’t even fill up a boy never mind a man.  Besides, I do need to feel the sun on my face awhile.  Can’t stand it here another minute.  Where’s that chair anyway?  He did say he was going to release it right away didn’t he?” Nick fretted.

“Don’t fuss so Nick.  The doctor just left here a few minutes ago.  I’ll bet that chair will be shortly.” Heath tried to calm the agitated Nick.

“Clothes!  I forgot.  Mother – do I have any clothes to wear? I can’t leave here naked!”

“Yes dear, I have some clothes hidden at the nursing station for you.  I’ll go get you a shirt but I don’t think we’ll be able to manage pants over those casts.  Mmmm – I’ll ask the nurses if they have any suggestions.”  Victoria said as she left the room.

“Pants!  Heath – I can’t go out without pants on.  They’re finally letting me out of this place and I haven’t got any pants.” Nick said panicking.

“Easy Nick – Mother will come up with something.  Don’t get all riled up.  If she can’t then I’ll just run out to a store and find you something quick like and be right back.  We’ll get you out of here – don’t take on so.” Heath tried placating his brother.

Victoria came back with Jeff, the orderly who had been helping Nick during the past week.  “The nurse found a pair of pajama bottoms left behind by a rather large man.  These should fit over your casts.  I’ll leave you to get dressed.  Heath – the hospital has a courtyard that opens up to a rather lovely beach.  Why don’t you bring Nick down there and I’ll go see if I have procure a picnic lunch for us to have there?”

“That sounds right fine to me Mother.  We’ll see you there shortly.  Come on Nick – let’s see if we can get you into these clothes.  It looks like it might be a mite tricky.”

And it was.  Heath and Jeff worked together trying hard to not hurt Nick in the process.  Nick got impatient and told them to get on with it and not to worry about him.  Finally, he was dressed and eager to get going.

“Nick – I’d better come with you until your brother has you right in the courtyard.  There’s a couple of  stairs just outside the door that are going to be hard to maneuver with this chair. “ Jeff said helpfully.

“Sure – thanks.  Let’s just go already.  I’ve been cooped up in this room forever.” Nick barked.

“Well now Big Brother – I can surely understand but remember what you promised that doctor or you won’t be coming home on Friday.” Heath cautioned.

“They letting you go home so soon, Nick?  Thought you’d be in here for at least a month or more.” Jeff asked curiously.

‘Not soon enough for me.  But I got to come back when they take the casts off.  I can’t wait to get home.”

Heath thought that he couldn’t wait either.  It sure would be nice to have Nick close by and not have to keep taking those train rides back and forth.  Besides, Nick could work on the books and keep up to date on the ranch goings on.  He’d probably settle down some if he doesn’t feel so out of touch with the ranch.  There was also that trial to get through.  Heath hoped it would not take too much of a toll on his brother.  He knew Nick wouldn’t never admit it, but it sure had to take a lot out of a person to relive an experience like the one he had gone through.   He sure knew firsthand what painful memories can do to a man.  Might feel better though knowing what was left of that bunch would be in jail for a very long time.

With Jeff’s help, they finally arrived in the courtyard with the sun shining down on them.  Nick took a deep breath and seemed to relax considerably.  Heath took the blanket and spread it out beside Nick’s chair for when Victoria returned with the food.  He double checked the brake on the chair before getting comfortable himself.

“Nick – there’s something else that needs talking about.” Heath said quietly.

“Hmm – just spit it out little brother.  No need to pussyfoot around.  I’m in too good a mood to let anything spoil this moment.”

“It’s about Jerimiah.”

‘What about Jerimiah?  They didn’t send him off for trial did they?” Nick asked worriedly.

“No – but he feels powerful guilty about what happened.  He’s staying close to the winery during the day and comes at night to work on Mother’s garden to stay clear of the men and the family.”

“Got no need to feel guilty.  I did what I did.  No more need be said about it.”

“Nick – I think you got to say something to him.  I tried but he didn’t listen to me.  It best come from you.  I was gonna bring him by the hospital but with you coming home on Friday – well, might as well wait till you get settled at home.  He feels responsible.”

A look of understanding passed between them.  Both thinking of times when guilt they had lived with burned deeply into their souls when one of their actions had done some harm to someone else.

‘Might just ask his help with this chair.  It’s almost as big as a buggy.  Gonna be hard to get around.  Yeah, that’s what I’ll do.  Make him feel useful and then he’ll realize that there’s no hard feelings on my part.” Nick figured he had solved the problem.

Heath saw Victoria coming their way laden down with two large picnic baskets.  He immediately jumped up to give her a hand.  After he relieved her of her burden, he said, “ Boy howdy – Mother.  You must have got enough food to feed us for a week.”

“Now don’t say that boy.  You don’t know how hungry I am.  Come on – hurry up with that.  I’m just wasting away as you keep jabbering there.” Nick eyed the baskets greedily.

After they put a huge dent into the food, Heath noticed Nick’s eyelids start to get droopy.

“Well now big brother, I think that I’d best see if I can round up Jeff and get you back to your bed.  We can come out again later if you want.”  Heath said as he stood up and went in search of the orderly surprised that he got no argument from Nick.

“Thanks – Mother.  You don’t know how good it feels to have a full stomach again.  I think I’m gonna fall asleep the minute I close my eyes.  Why don’t you head back to Jarrod’s and have a nap yourself.  You look mighty tired.” Nick said concerned on how fragile his mother looked.  He was worried she was wearing herself out looking after him.  He vowed that he would try to be a little more cooperative with the hospital staff so it wouldn’t be so hard on her. “And take that brother of mine with you.  He looks plum tuckered too.  That boy sure needs a lot of sleep.  Probably wouldn’t hurt none if he had a nap too.”

Victoria gave Nick a wry look thinking how he never could seem to leave his protector role for a minute.  She had to admit though that she was feeling worn out.  This whole episode had been fraught with so many emotions.  She also found that she was missing Tom in a way that she hadn’t since right after his death.

“I think I will son.  We’ll come back to bring you your dinner.  I’ll have Maria put something together and if the weather holds, we’ll eat right here again.”

Heath returned with Jeff and they got Nick settled back in bed.  True to his prediction, he was asleep in a matter of minutes.

The weekend passed quickly for all of them.  Before they knew it, Heath was on the train heading back to Stockton and Nick was trying to master using crutches.  Heath was lightly dozing on the ride thinking that he was glad he hadn’t seen Lara after that first morning.  He had heard one of the nurses say that she had the weekend off so it worked out well that he didn’t have to see her with Nick.  It would give him more time to get used to the idea.

The week passed quickly and before he knew it, he was back on the train heading for San Francisco.  He had the wire from Victoria saying that Dr. Ferguson had given the okay for Nick to come home today.  Jarrod was tied up with a trial that had been postponed earlier because of Nick’s condition.  He was hoping to be on the train back tomorrow but Heath figured Victoria should have one of them there with her for the train ride home.  So here he was watching the familiar landscape go by while hoping there would be no delays and they could all be home soon.

After he arrived, he went to Jarrod’s house to escort Victoria to the hospital.  He found her packed and ready to go.  She was anxious to get home also.  It had been three weeks since this terrible episode had occurred and she wanted to get their lives back to normal.  They had their luggage sent on to the train station and headed out to the hospital.

Victoria had some gifts for the nurses and they went to the nursing station first to hand them out.  She hoped it would soothe any ruffled feathers her son had managed to disturb during his stay at the hospital.  He would be coming back in just over a month’s time and thought maybe his reception would be better if they left on a positive note.  They went to Nick’s room only to find it empty.

“Heath – where can he be?  He knew we would be leaving this morning and I thought he would be dressed and anxiously awaiting us.  It’s not like him.  You know how eager he was to go home.  I can’t imagine him wanting to spend a minute more here than he has to.” Victoria said worriedly.

“Mother – let me check with the nurses.  Maybe he’s waiting in the courtyard.  You just sit and wait here.  I’ll be right back.” Heath reassured her.

After talking to the nurses, he went to the courtyard to look for himself.  He went back out front of the hospital and looked down the street with no sign of his brother anywhere.  He went back to the nursing station to see if anyone had seen any sign of Nick and received a negative response.  Soon as many of the staff as possible were searching the hospital.  No one could find Nick.

Heath went back to his room to inform Victoria.  “Mother – he’s nowhere to be found.  I even had someone check the diner down the street.  No one has seen him for a couple of hours.”  He had a bad feeling about this.  Mother was right.  This was not like Nick.  He would have been chomping at the bit to get going.  He wouldn’t have done anything to delay his departure – not willingly anyway.

Part 3

Heath looked over at Victoria and saw that she had reached the same conclusion as he had.  Nick would not have held up their departure to the ranch for anything.  He was too impatient to get home.  Maybe that’s it thought Heath.

“Mother – you don’t suppose he got too restless waiting for us and went to Jarrod’s on his own?” Heath pondered out loud.

“Son – I just don’t know what to think.  This isn’t like Nick at all.  He was getting along pretty good on those crutches but I can’t see him making it all the way to Jarrod’s on his own.  He still uses that chair fairly often. Besides …..” Victoria stopped.

Just then Dr. Ferguson came into the room looking very worried.  “Mrs. Barkley – Heath – I’ve asked around to all the staff and there’s no sign of Nick.  The last anyone remembers seeing him was first thing this morning when Jeff took him over to visit young Cory Haines.”

“Cory Haines?  Who is he, doctor?” Heath asked.

“Cory is an eight year old boy who had both his legs broken by his father in a drunken rage.  After he finished with Cory, he went looking for more of a challenge and found it.  He was killed in a bar room brawl.  Cory is all on his own and Nick has been visiting him all week.  They have become fast friends.  Cory told me that Nick came by to let him know that he was leaving this morning but that he would be back and if we couldn’t find any relatives for him to live with, Nick was going to take him out to your ranch.    The last Cory saw of him was Jeff pushing his chair down the hall.”

Oh Nick – another one of your lost souls, thought Victoria.  We really are going to turn into the Barkley Ranch for Boys at this rate.  It was just like her son who couldn’t stand to see a child abused and left to their own devices.

“Doctor – has anyone seen Jeff or Nick’s chair?” Heath asked.

“Now that you mention it, no, Jeff is nowhere to be found either.  Nick’s chair is not at the nursing station but no one has really looked for it.  Let me go make a few more inquiries and I’ll get right back to you.  I’m really sorry about this.  If Jeff did take Nick out of the hospital this morning, he should have know better.”

“Not your fault Doctor.  If my brother wanted to leave, he can be powerfully determined and Jeff wouldn’t have stood a chance.” Heath replied as the doctor left the room.

‘Now Mother – why don’t you just sit a spell why we wait to hear if the doctor has any more information for us.” Heath said noticing how pale Victoria looked.  She certainly didn’t need any more aggravation.  He knew Nick could be impatient but he couldn’t believe his brother would intentionally put his mother through any more grief.  Nick had been worried about Victoria just last weekend.  Heath couldn’t reconcile that with this behavior but he didn’t want to add to his mother’s anxiety by voicing his thoughts.  She looked mighty fragile to him right now.

“Heath – I have a bad feeling about all of this.  I don’t know what’s happened here but I am sure that Nick would not have left here without us.  I made him promise last night to be ready and in this room at ten o’clock no matter what.  He would not have broken his word to me.  That I do know.” Victoria fretted.

Dr. Ferguson returned looking harassed as he gave them an update.  “Neither Jeff or Nick’s chair is anywhere to be found.  I can’t believe that Jeff has been so irresponsible.  I have never heard of one instance in the year that he has worked for us when he has broken the rules like this.  He is usually very conscious of hospital protocol.”

“Well now doctor, I think we’d best return to Jarrod’s house.  If Nick shows up there, we’ll send a message.  If they turn up here, please send someone as soon as possible.  Come now Mother – let’s get you back to Jarrod’s.  Nick might be there waiting for us.” Heath coaxed Victoria.

The ride back to Jarrod’s was done in silence both lost in their own thoughts.  As soon as they entered the house, they knew Nick was not there.  Maria, Jarrod’s housekeeper, was surprised to see them as she assumed they would be on their way to Stockton.  She informed that she had not seen Nick nor were there any messages.

After Victoria asked for a pot of tea, they went into Jarrod’s study to discuss their next move.

“Sweetheart – I think you should go see Adam Morgan, you remember Jarrod’s friend from the police department?”

“Mother – do you really think it’s time to bring in the police?”

“Not the police – no – but Adam is a close friend.  If we give him all the information we have, he will know whether or not we should bring in the police.  Son, I just don’t like the feel of this.  Something’s very wrong.”

“To tell you the truth, I have the same feeling.  But what could have happened?  That’s what’s got me stumped, Mother.  Nick is not an easy person to hide at the best of times but in that chair with those casts, he makes quite a sight.  I don’t understand how nobody saw him leave the hospital or on the street.  And another question that’s bothering is why?  None of this makes much sense.  Maybe Adam can look at it from a different angle than we been looking.  He’s right across from the courthouse, isn’t he?”  Heath asked.

“Yes, he has an office in the main police station.  He does a lot of field work though so I hope he’s there.  I wish Jarrod wasn’t in closed court today.  There’s no way to get a hold of him until late this afternoon. “  Victoria fretted.

“Don’t worry Mother.  We’ll get to the bottom of this.  Sit and have your tea and I’ll head right out to see if I can find Adam.  We’ll come right back here to let you know where we’ll be if Nick does come back.  Okay now – you rest easy till I get back.”  Heath said as he hurried out the door.  He was glad he had something to do.  He felt so helpless just waiting around.  He’d like to go back to the hospital too and ask some questions of his own.

He felt like he was in a bad dream and just couldn’t wake up.  It seemed like days since he got off that train instead of three hours.  Where could his brother be?  And why?  Those questions kept going round and round through his head with no answers forthcoming.  He practically ran into the police station hoping that Adam would be there.

The sergeant at the front desk directed him to Adams office after informing him that he had just arrived there himself.  Heath walked quickly down the hall and almost bumped right into the man he had come in search of.

“Whoa there – Heath isn’t it?  It’s been awhile.  What brings you down here?” Adam asked after narrowly avoiding spilling the cup of coffee in his hand.

“Hi there Adam.  Can we go to your office?  I need to talk to you about something I’d rather not speak about in the hallway.”  Heath said extending his hand to the detective.

“Sure thing Heath.  Come this way but I’d better warn you that it’s more like broom closet than an office.  It’s private though if that’s what you want.”  Adam replied leading the way.

After they were seated, Adam asked, “Well now  - what can I do for you?”

Heath related the events of the morning and their concerns.  He told him that Victoria had requested his help in this matter as they did not know what to do from here.

“It does sound mighty fishy – doesn’t it?  I know Nick is famous for his practical jokes but this doesn’t sound like one of them.  I had lunch with Jarrod on Tuesday and he told me what had happened.  From what he told me, Nick was in no condition to go gallivanting about on his own.  What about this Jeff fellow?  Lot’s of questions with no answers.  I agree that we should go back to the hospital and ask more questions.  I would like a list of all the people who were on duty this morning.  There could have been a shift change and someone who saw something could be off duty now.  Let me go check with the desk sergeant before we leave.  I’ll get someone checking the morgues and other hospitals in case there was an accident.”  Adam said as he hurried from the room.

Morgues? thought Heath.  Oh no – please God don’t let him be found there.  He relaxed somewhat as he thought he would know if his brother was dead.  He didn’t know how but he felt that if Nick was dead that he would feel it somehow.

Heath and Adam returned to the house and informed Victoria that they were going back to the hospital.  Adam took charge once they arrived.  They were provided with a list of staff that had been there that morning but were now off duty.  They decided to divide up the list and meet back at Jarrod’s in a couple of hours.  Heath took the list with Lara’s name on it.  He wanted to be the one to tell her that Nick was missing as he knew she had strong feelings for his brother.

He noted that her address was in the same Nob Hill area that Jarrod lived in.  As he approached the house, he saw that it was a grand mansion built in the same style as some of the southern plantation houses he had seen.  He felt a bit intimidated by the grandeur but knew he had to see her before this news became public.  She also might have some additional information for them.  He banged the ornate knocker and waited for someone to answer the door.

“Good afternoon ma’am.  My name’s Heath Barkley and I need to see Dr. Lara Collins.  It’s an emergency.” Heath told the uniformed maid who answered the door.

“If you could wait here sir, I’ll see if she is receiving yet.  Dr. Lara works nights you know and could be still sleeping.”

“I know and I’m sorry but it’s urgent that I speak to her.”  Heath apologized.

“Consuelo – who’s there?” a gruff voice barked.

“It’s for Dr. Lara.  I’m just going to see if she’s up yet, Dr. Gerald.” Consuelo answered as she headed up the stairs.

Heath saw a tall white haired man enter the foyer.  He assumed that this was Lara’s father and that he was a doctor also.

“Sorry to disturb you sir but it is an emergency.  The name’s Heath Barkley.” He introduced himself extending his hand.

“Barkley – you say.  You must be related to that firecracker Nick that my daughter has been looking after.  Didn’t she tell me he was going home today?  Has he had relapse or something?” the doctor questioned.

“We don’t rightly know.  You see we can’t find him.”

“Can’t find him?  Heath what are you saying?” Lara asked as she hurried down the stairs.

“Let’s go into the study dear.  I don’t think we need to have this conversation in the foyer.  Consuelo – please bring a pot of coffee to the study.” Gerald indicated that they should follow him.  He led them into a well appointed room lined with books.  He gestured to the chairs in front of the fireplace.

“Heath – I repeat.  What do you mean you can’t find him?  Is Nick missing?” Lara asked again obviously upset.

“I didn’t want to break it you like that Lara but yes – Nick is missing.  Mother and I went to the hospital this morning to take him home but he was nowhere to be found.  Dr. Ferguson questioned all the staff who were on duty when we got there and couldn’t give us any answers.  We are now questioning all the staff who left this morning.  Lara when was the last time you saw Nick?” Heath asked gently.

“Wait a minute young man.  Are you insinuating that Lara had something to this with his disappearance?” her father barked protectively.

“Father – don’t be rude.  I’m sure Heath is just trying to establish when Nick went missing.” Lara interrupted her father.

“Yes sir – that’s exactly what we are trying to figure out.  The last person to see him that we can find is young Cory Haines who spoke to Nick early this morning.”

“Let me think.  I was later than usual leaving this morning.  I saw Jeff pushing Nick down the hallway just about eight this morning.  I stopped them to say goodbye and wish him well.  We chatted for a few minutes and then I had to go see another patient.  I don’t remember seeing them after that.  Doesn’t anyone have any idea where he is?”  Lara asked looking worried.

“No and I have to tell you that we’re pretty worried at this point.  Nick was so anxious to be going home that we know that he wouldn’t have left us waiting this long if he weren’t in trouble.” Heath shook his head wearily overcome with a sense of foreboding.

“I know he wasn’t up to going out this morning anyway.  He hasn’t been sleeping very well this past couple of nights.  Those nightmares have been keeping him up.”

Heath’s head shot up at the mention of nightmares.  Oh lord – not again.  What had Nick been warned about this time?  Why hadn’t he said anything?

“Did you happen to hear anything he said during these nightmares?  Did he tell you anything about them?” Heath questioned urgently.

“Not a lot.  Why?  I just figured after the ordeal he had been through that it was only natural that he would have a nightmare or two if he relived that experience.”

“Lara – this could be very important.  Please try to remember.  Did he say anything or did you hear anything that you could describe what he was dreaming about?”

“Young man – quit badgering my daughter.  She told you everything she can.  If you are going to continue on this way, I’ll have to ask you to leave.” Gerald patted his daughter’s hand protectively.

“Father – Heath is not badgering me.  He is obviously very worried about his brother and is only trying to help find him.  Although for the life of me, I cannot understand why his nightmares are so important.  Can you tell me Heath?” Lara probed gently.

Heath hesitated unsure how much to tell them.  He realized that he had to give Lara more information so she understood the importance of the question he was asking.

“Lara – I don’t know how to explain this and if anyone would have tried to tell me this a few years ago, I wouldn’t held much stock in their tale.  But now I know from experience that Nick sees things in his nightmares or dreams that come true.   Don’t know how else to put it.  So you see if you can give me a clue as to what he was dreaming about, we might know where to start looking.” Heath looked desperately at Lara hoping she wouldn’t dismiss what he had told her.

“Balderdash – young man.  Do you know what you are saying?  Are you actually trying to convince us that your brother can predict the future through his dreams?

“Father – if you can’t be civil to Heath, I am going to ask you to leave.” Lara said firmly as she looked deeply into those beautiful blue eyes.  She saw that he was sincere and that it had been hard for him to expose himself the way that he had.  “Heath – I wasn’t really paying that much attention but I do remember that he was shivering and saying how cold he was.  He was also frantic about needles once the dreams started.  He wouldn’t let anyone near him with one.  Wait a minute – I remember something.  When I asked him why he didn’t want a needle, he looked at me with such an intense expression on his face.  He said - it would all start with a needle.  That’s all he said Heath – I’m sorry but I don’t understand what it means now anymore than I did at the time.”

“Oh Lara – I reckon that you gave us our first clue.  I think that whoever took Nick from that hospital must have drugged him to do so.  It wouldn’t have looked suspicious to give a patient a needle there now would it?  That’s how they got him out.  There’s no way he would have cooperated otherwise.  Now the next question is who and why?” Heath sat quietly for a moment mulling over the information that Lara had given him.  “What do you know about Jeff?  He’s missing too.”

“Jeff – I don’t really know too much about him.  I usually work nights as that is the agreement I have with the hospital.  They’re still not too comfortable with having a woman doctor on staff and they think it would be better if I did not interact with too many of the patient’s family if possible.  To tell you the truth Heath, if it wasn’t for my father’s influence, I probably wouldn’t have any position.  Jeff works during the day and our paths only cross during a shift change.  I do know from my conversations with your brother that Jeff has been spending a lot of time with Nick.  I heard the nurse talking that they were glad that they had such a good rapport.   Jeff had pretty much taken over tending Nick’s needs and that left them free to tend the other patients.”

‘A friend of the family has gone over to his rooming house to see if he can find out anymore information on him.  I best be moving on to the next name on my list.  I can’t thank you enough for the time you have given me. “  Heath said as rose to leave.

“Let me walk you out Heath.  Please let me know if you hear anything.  I’m so sorry your family has to go through this.  You really don’t need this on top of the last tragedy that you have lived through." Lara gently placed her hand on Heath’s arm wanting to comfort him.

Heath felt the same way.  He knew Lara must be upset by this news.  “I know he’s something special to you Lara and he’s a mite special to me also.  We’re going to do everything in our power to find him.  I won’t leave no rock unturned.”

Lara felt a surge of relief.  So that’s it.  He thinks that I am fond of Nick and that’s why he stepped back.  How to fix this without seeming too forward?  “Heath – I just want you to know that I understand.  I am fond of Nick.  He’s like the big brother that I never had.  I think we have become good friends over the last few weeks.  I was hoping that when he came back to get his casts off that I could set him up with a friend of mine.  I think the two of them would be perfect together.  She’s quite a character herself and they would make a perfect couple.”

Heath looked into Lara’s eyes and saw what she was trying to tell him.  That spark he felt was mutual.  She wasn’t sweet on Nick.  She was just fond of him.  Boy howdy – that was the best news he had heard in a long time.  Then he remembered why he was there in the first place.   Again there was no time for romance.  It would have to wait until Nick was back in the loving arms of the family.

Two hours later, Heath walked slowly into Jarrod’s house feeling very discouraged.  He really didn’t have anymore information that when he left Lara.  He walked into the study and saw Adam having a drink with Victoria.  Adam slowly shook his head indicating that he had no further news either.

Before anyone could speak, they heard the front door open again.  Jarrod came striding into the study holding a piece of paper in his hand.

“Mother – Heath – Adam – what the devil is going on?  I was given this message at the courthouse.  I was hoping that it was a prank and that you were already settling in at the ranch.”  Jarrod exclaimed.

‘We were hoping for the same thing son but Nick is missing.  We knew we couldn’t reach you until this afternoon so we asked Adam for help.  What’s in the message?”

Jarrod read “Don’t worry about Nick.  He’s fine and will stay that way as long as you follow our instructions.  Don’t go to the police.  We will contact you again soon.”

Part 4

Nick felt like his arms and legs were weighed down with rocks.  He couldn’t seem to move but he didn’t feel any bindings on him.  He struggled to open his eyes which felt like they were glued shut.  He was trying to get his bearings.  He seemed to be moving.  Not on a train though – maybe, a wagon.  Yep, definitely a wagon he thought after concentrating on the movement.  But why was he in a wagon?  Think Nick think.  What is the last thing you remember?

His mind couldn’t seem to grasp the memories he was searching for.  All he could remember was being in the hospital but not how he came to be in a wagon.  He tried again to move and was rewarded when he felt his fingers start to come to life.  All of a sudden he heard a movement and felt a presence nearby.

“He’s starting to come around.  What do you want me to do?” he heard a female voice ask.

“Give him another shot.  We got about another half hour to go and then we need to move him into the cabin.  Be best if he was unconscious.”  a male voice responded.

Noooooooo he thought as he felt a pin prick in his arm and darkness fell once again.

Back at Jarrod’s house, a silence a befallen the group gathered there.  They were stunned by the contents of the message that Jarrod had just read.  Heath saw Victoria pale and sway as if she were going to faint.  He immediately moved closer to her and offered his support.

“Mother – you’d best sit down.  Jarrod – why don’t you pour her a sherry?  Mother – please sit.” Heath beseeched her as she seemed not to hear him and continued standing.

Finally, she looked up at him with terror in her eyes and sat.  “Jarrod – make it a brandy, will you son?” she finally spoke.

Jarrod looked at his mother in surprise.  He knew she usually only drank wine or sherry.   Obediently, he picked up the brandy decanter and poured a snifter half full for her.   He carried it over to her and gently squeezed her shoulder.  “Mother – can you fill me in on what’s going on here and why is Adam involved?”

Heath intervened knowing Victoria was too spent to go over the details once again.  He quietly explained the events that had transpired since he arrived that morning.  He finished with, “That’s about it Jarrod.  We knew something was up but we didn’t know exactly what until you came home with that message.”

Adam asked, “How was this message delivered to you Jarrod?”

“A court clerk gave it to me. He said it had been left on his desk when he went to lunch so he didn’t know who had delivered it.  Like I said, at first, I thought it was a prank but I thought I should hurry home to make sure.  As soon as I walked in, I knew it wasn’t.  But why Nick and why now?”  Jarrod replied.

“We don’t know but it sure sounds like a kidnapping to me.  Whoever it was, also knew Nick was in the hospital and couldn’t put up much of a fight right now.  I think we might have to wait for the next set of instructions to figure out the why though.  It could be that someone saw the chance at some easy money or maybe manipulate the family in some way.  By the way, Jarrod, what case are you working on right now?  Could it have some bearing on this?” Adam speculated.

Jarrod looked startled at first then his eyes narrowed thoughtfully.  “I’m defending Harry Morgan who I am sure was framed for embezzlement from the San Francisco Loan and Trading Company.  I have been working hard trying to find the evidence to refute the charges but with all that’s been happening, I haven’t been able to put it all together yet.  The judge is getting impatient with all the delays and wants the trial to start Monday.  We just went through all the pre-trial motions and jury selection today.”

Adam said, “Well now that is interesting.  Could be you were getting too close and whoever is worried wants you distracted again.  On the other hand, it could just be about the money.  We should look at every angle though and see what we can come up with.  Do you have your case notes here that I can look through?”

“What?  Oh yes, of course, there are here in my briefcase.  Maybe a fresh set of eyes will see what I’ve been missing.  But I am worried that you are here Adam.  The note said no police and we don’t want anything to happen to Nick.” Jarrod said worriedly.

“I think we’re covered on that one.  Heath came to see me this morning and if the kidnapper was watching you then he would be unaware of what Heath was doing.  I know it’s chancy but you can’t do this on your own.  The only person at the department I will notify of my involvement will be Commander Thomas.  You know he can be trusted.  I’ve been discreet today and tried not flash my badge around.  If someone asks, you can say that I am a friend of the family.”  Adam tried to reassure the family.

“Jarrod – I think would should graciously accept Adam’s help.  While we do not want to endanger Nick, we need every resource possible to get him back to us unharmed.” Victoria proclaimed firmly.  “Now gentlemen, if you will excuse me, I need to lie down and have some quiet time.  I hate to admit it but this day has worn me out.”

Victoria rose and left the room.  She wearily climbed the stairs hoping that she would make it to her bedroom.  She felt a heaviness in her heart and her limbs felt weak.  Dear God, she prayed how much more can our family endure?  It was only a few weeks ago that she thought she might lose Nick forever.  The ups and downs of her emotions were wearing at her spirit.  She had been acutely aware of her loneliness through the days when Nick was fighting for his life.  She needed Tom at her side more than ever.  She had felt his presence but it was not the same as having the flesh and blood man at her side.  Now this.  She knew her family expected her to be strong but how much was a mother supposed to withstand?  Was Nick still alive? Or had they already killed him?  She couldn’t bear to think about it.  She needed some time to herself to gather her resources if she was going to be able to survive this latest crisis.

Downstairs, Jarrod was reviewing his case with Adam.  Heath was sitting in a chair by the fireplace detaching himself from their conversation.  He was trying to absorb all that had happened today.  Nick – where are you?  He sometimes wondered if he was better off before he came into this family.  Then - the only person he had to worry about was himself.  Now he was part of this family and if he lost one of them, especially Nick, he didn’t know how he would handle it.  Twice in one month this gut wrenching terror had it’s hold on him.  And Victoria too by the looks of things.  He couldn’t remember seeing her looking so tiny.  He knew she was a small woman but her presence usually made one forget that.  She could take over a room like nobody else he had ever known.  With the events that had occurred, he had seen that her presence was somehow diminished tonight.

His thoughts were interrupted when he heard someone knock at the front door.  All three men froze as they heard Jarrod’s housekeeper answer the door.  Heath was the first one to move out to foyer to see who it was.  He was surprised to see Lara standing there.

“Hello Heath.  I hope this isn’t a bad time but I have some information for you and thought you might be able to use it to find your brother.”  Lara said anxiously.

“Come right in Lara.  Anything you have to tell us would be much appreciated.” Heath said as he led her into the study.  “You know my brother, Jarrod and this is a friend of the family, Adam Morgan.  Adam, this is Dr. Lara Collins.  She tended Nick while he was at the hospital.  She says she might have some information for us.”

“Actually, Heath, Lara and I have met before.  I must ask you Lara not to mention my presence here to anybody including your father.  You see Jarrod received a note indicating Nick has been kidnapped and was asked not to contact the police.  It’s very important that nobody knows that I am here.” Adam stressed his point.

“Kidnapped!  Oh my – what terrible news.” Lara exclaimed as she sat down.  “I just wanted to let you know that I went to the hospital after Heath came by.  I thought that I might be able to find out more from the staff than you were able.  We’re pretty proud of our facility and I thought maybe someone might not have said something that they thought might get the hospital or one of their co-workers in trouble.”

“What did you find out Lara?” Adam probed.

“There are only two staff members not accounted for.  One is Jeff as you know and the other is Susan Montgomery.  Now when I asked about Jeff, it seems that even though he is well liked, nobody really knows much about him.  He doesn’t socialize with any of the staff and keeps to himself for the most part.  We didn’t really realize until today that we know practically nothing about him.  He never talks about where he came from or his family or anything personal at all.  No one even knew where he lived.”

Adam said, “I went by his rooming house today and got the same story from his land lady.    His room is almost empty.  There’s a few clothes but absolutely no personal items whatsoever.  I couldn’t find one clue about where he is from or who he might know.  It had the feel of a drifter not someone working for the past year at the hospital.  Who’s Susan Montgomery?”

“Susan is a nurse who has been working at the hospital for the past two years or so.  She keeps mostly to herself also.  Some of the other nurses said she surprised them when she came in yesterday and said she was leaving to marry her hometown sweetheart.  She said she was sorry not to be giving more notice but her fiancée had come to fetch her and they were moving back east right away.  Some of the nurses were a little suspicious as she hadn’t mentioned having anyone waiting back home for her.  I don’t know what to think but I thought you should know.  She always seemed to be so angry at Nick so I thought maybe she was trying to hide her feelings and that maybe they had gone away together.  I guess that I was wrong.” Lara shook her head sadly.

“Well Lara you might have been wrong about her motives but I wouldn’t rule her out as a suspect just yet.  Her name wasn’t on the list that Dr. Ferguson gave us so we didn’t check her out.   I guess he thought that he didn’t have to add her to the list as she wasn’t supposed to be in to work today.  Do you have her address?” Adam asked.

“Yes, I wrote both Susan and Jeff’s addresses out for you.  Here you are.” she said as she handed him a slip of paper.  “Is there anything else I can do?”

“Yes, there is one more thing I’d like to ask of you.  Can you check to see if there are any drugs missing?  If the kidnappers had someone working at the hospital, it would probably be easier to take drugs from there then to go out and buy them.  We figure that Nick was probably drugged when they abducted him.  It would help us a lot if we can be sure if they have a large supply with them.” Adam told her.

“Dr. Ferguson already has someone doing inventory when I left the hospital.  He was worried about that also.  Why do you want to know if it’s a large supply or not?”

“Because if there was a large amount taken, it probably means that they intend to keep Nick alive.  It could also mean that they are in a populated area where they might want to keep him as quiet as possible.” Adam answered.

“Lara – why don’t I take you back to hospital to see what Dr. Ferguson found out and then I’ll take you back home.  We don’t know who we are dealing with here and you might be another target for them.” Heath suggested.

“That sounds like a good plan Little Brother.  Adam and I can continue to go through these papers of mine and see if we can come up with a lead.  Lara – we really have to thank you for your help.  Heath, can you check out Miss Montgomery’s lodgings while you are out?   Adam does not want to leave until he can be sure that he can do so undetected.”  Jarrod relaxed at Heath’s quick nod.

Heath escorted Lara from the room and asked if she would like him to hail a carriage.  She said she would prefer to walk as it wasn’t that far a distance to the hospital.

“I’m so sorry I couldn’t be more of help Heath.  Your poor family has gone through so much this past month and to have this happen now when you thought life was going to get back to normal.  Life’s so unfair at times, isn’t it?” Lara looked at Heath’s tired face.

“I reckon you see a lot of that where you work.  I just want to say that I appreciate what you been doing.  You didn’t have to go down to the hospital and talk to them nurses for us and it means a lot to me that you did.  I have to tell you this just seems like a bad dream.   I’m having trouble getting my head around this whole thing.  I just don’t know what to do next, you know.  I’m mighty glad that Adam is on our side.” Heath sighed deeply.

Lara was overcome with a feeling of protectiveness towards this man walking beside her.  She knew how close he was to his brother.  She remembered how he sobbed at his bedside when Nick was in the coma.  At least then, they had something tangible to fight but now they were in the dark as to the reason for this kidnapping.  They also didn’t know the identity of the kidnappers.  How frustrated he must be!  Lara put her hand on his arm and squeezed lightly.

“Heath – I know you’ll do everything in your power to get Nick back safely.  Nick knows it too.  We have to hope that the kidnappers only want money and that they will let him go afterwards.”

“Most kidnappers don’t return their victims.  They don’t want nobody to be able to identify them.  They’re safer that way.” Heath said worriedly.

“Maybe – but remember that if they keep Nick drugged the whole time, they might be planning on releasing him because he probably won’t be able to identify them.” Lara said soothingly as she looked deeply into his troubled eyes.

Heath put his arms around her needing her warmth.  She gladly held him close hoping that she could give him a little comfort.  When he looked down at her, she couldn’t help herself.  Her hand moved to his face to caress him.  He put his hand over hers and moved it to his lips where he lightly kissed it.  She lifted her face inviting him to kiss her.  The last thing she saw before she closed her eyes was the torment on his face as he accepted what she had offered.

Part 5

Nick slowly drifted back to consciousness.  He could feel no movement now and it felt like he was lying on a real bed.  This time he wasn’t going to try and move until he could figure out what was happening.  Maybe he could fool whoever he was dealing with.  Yeah right and then what was he going to do?  He’d never felt so physically helpless in his life.  These damn legs of his weren’t going to get him very far on his own.

He strained to listen to the sounds around him.  He could hear someone moving around not far away but there were no voices to be heard.  All was quiet around him and it frustrated him to no end.  Patience wasn’t one of his virtues but he somehow knew that he had to find some right now.  Sooner or later it would pay off.  He just hoped it would be sooner as he was uncomfortable and any movement might tip them off that he was awake.

Finally someone came into the room.  He felt their presence move close to where he was lying.  A hand touched his forehead and moved his hair back off his face.  It felt like a female hand with it’s soft touch.  He tried to keep his breathing even and was rewarded when she spoke.

“Jeff – he feels warm to me.  I hope the drugs or this move hasn’t been too much for him.  He should have been coming round before now.”

That voice.  It was that pesky Nurse Montgomery.  He would swear to it.  What the hell was going on?  Why did Jeff and that nurse move him here?  Where was his family?  It didn’t sound like they meant him any harm if she was worried about him.  Maybe he should move around a bit just to get comfortable and see what happened.  He shifted his position slightly to ease the casts digging into his legs.

“See – Susan. He’s starting to come round now.  You worry too much.  Nick’s one tough son of a gun.  He’ll be fine.  Come on and help me finish unpacking.  We’ve got a lot to do before we can turn in tonight.”

“I guess you’re right.  We’re going to have to take shifts to watch him throughout the night though just to be on the safe side.” she said as she left the room.

Nick waited until he was sure they had both left the room and then slowly opened his eyes.  He could see that he was in a large, well-appointed bedroom.  He strained to see what was beyond the door but was frustrated at the angle it had been left open.  He couldn’t see much of anything.   He looked around the room again and was disappointed to see that the two large windows in the room looked like they had been boarded up.  Well, they couldn’t be used as an escape route if he needed it and he couldn’t tell if it was night or day.  He scanned the room again looking for something that he could use as a weapon and was again frustrated that there was nothing he could see.  He heard footsteps coming his way and quickly closed his eyes again.

“Come now – Nick.  It’s time to wake up.  You must be hungry and I have some nice hot soup ready for you.  That’s right now.  Wake up Nick.” she said as she saw his eyelids flicker.  She gently touched his forehead again and saw that he was fully awake now.

“Where am I?” Nick asked pretending to be still drowsy.

“Jeff – come help me prop Nick up so he can have something to eat. “

“Hey there Nick.  Glad to see you are finally awake.  You must be starving.  You haven’t eaten all day.  Here we go.  Let’s just get you sitting up here and we’ll try to explain what happened today.  You must be wondering where you are.” Jeff cheerfully greeted him.

Nick allowed himself to be helped into a sitting position and waited to see what they had to say.  None of this made sense to him.  If nothing else, he wanted to lull them into a false sense of security before he made his move.

“I guess you’re kinda anxious to hear what’s going on.  There’s no easy way to tell you this so I’m just gonna come right out and tell you.  Your mother had some kind of seizure early this morning.”

“WHAT?  Is she alright?  Why am I here?  I want to be with her.” Nick bellowed frightened at what he was hearing.

“Nick – calm down.  The doctor feels that she will be alright with lots of rest.  These past few weeks have been very hard on her and she just plum wore herself down.  She got really upset when the doctor said he was going to delay your release from the hospital.  He didn’t think she was up to tending you and felt she would try even if he gave her instructions not to.” Jeff told Nick patiently.

“We got plenty of people out at the ranch who would take care of me.  My sister, Audra, Heath, Silas, Jerimiah to name a few.  I don’t understand.  Where am I?” Nick asked.

“Well now, your brother Jarrod hired Susan and myself to tend you.  He arranged for us to use a friend’s hunting lodge.  That way your mother would get the rest she needs and you wouldn’t have to stay at the hospital.  He thought you would be more comfortable this way.  To tell you the truth, Susan drugged you at my request because I didn’t think we would be able to get you to cooperate and you might hurt yourself.” Jeff finished with an apologetic look on his face.

Nick was in a state of shock.  Pappy was responsible for this.  Mother was sick.  No it can’t be true.  Jarrod had to know that Nick would want to be close to his mother if she was ill.  He couldn’t have just sent him off like this.  Could he?  Nick didn’t know what to think right now.  Jeff and that pesky nurse weren’t threatening him and seemed genuinely concerned about his welfare.  What the hell was going on?  It wasn’t like Jarrod to do something like this without discussing it with him first.  But wait, maybe it was.  How many other times had he left Nick out of the loop when he thought it was for the best?  No, what about Heath?  He wouldn’t have agreed to this.  I know that for sure.  Maybe Jarrod did this before Heath arrived though.  Damn it, I don’t know what to think, Nick thought forlornly.

“I can see this has upset you.  We’ll leave you to think about it while we get your supper ready.  I’m sorry Nick.  This has to be hard for you.  Don’t worry – we’ll take real good care of you.”  Jeff said as he and Susan left the room.

When they were out of ear shot, Jeff whispered to Susan, “Do you think he bought it?”

“Yeah, I think so.  He certainly looked shocked.  I almost feel sorry for him.  I’m going to get his soup ready and I think I’d better put a sleeping powder in it just to be on the safe side.” Susan whispered back glancing anxiously back at the bedroom.

Susan came back with a tray for Nick.  He ate heartily while she fussed around the room.

Nick’s mind was still going in circles.  He didn’t know what to believe anymore.  He kept going back to Jeff and Susan’s attitude.  They seemed sympathetic to his situation and had not been threatening in anyway.  Could Jarrod have actually done this to him?   His eyes started getting heavy and he was having a hard time getting his thoughts together.  Nick’s last thought before he fell asleep was, “Heath – where are you?”

Heath gently detached his lips from Lara and looked down into her eyes.  He felt his spirit renewed and his strength of purpose returning.  Anything he might of felt for the other women that had been in his life seemed mighty shallow in comparison to what he had just experienced.

Lara saw the wonder in those expressive blue eyes of his and rejoiced.  She had recognized him as her soulmate almost from the moment they met and his kiss had sealed that thought.  He had touched deep into her heart.  But again, the timing wasn’t the greatest.  But at least now, maybe he would let her sustain him through this ordeal.

Heath’s look turned regretful as he said, “Lara – I’m sorry.  This isn’t the right time for what we’re doing here.  I have to focus on finding Nick.  You deserve more than I can give right now.”

“You know what Heath – you’re right.  I do deserve more than what you can give right now but there will be times when you deserve more than I can give.  Life’s like that especially in my line of work.  To me that’s what having a relationship is about.  Giving and taking from one another in times of need and each gaining strength from the experience.  Believe me, I am no joy to be around when one of my patient dies particularly if it’s a child.”

“But you should be courted properly and I don’t have the time or the energy to do that the way you a lady like you should be courted.”

“Heath Barkley – what do you mean a lady like me?  If you dare lump me into the same basket as those debutantes on Nob Hill, I’m going to walk away right now.  I’m not some silly little pampered miss that has to have you running in circles just so I know I have your devotion.  I know the situation you find yourself in right now and I just want to be there for you.  I am definitely not expecting roses and candlelight dinners as if my schedule would permit that in the first place.  Now are we straight on this?”

Heath’s lopsided grin shone down on her as he said, “Boy howdy, Lara, I don’t think you left me any other choice, now have you?  Nope, I wouldn’t want to be the one responsible for you being labeled a silly little pampered miss.  I would be honored to have your company whenever we can both find the time.”

Lara trembled in relief.  He didn’t walk away.  But now she knew they should get back to the business at hand.  “Come on cowboy, we’d better get to the hospital.  We have to find out what the drug inventory produced and my shift is going to be starting soon.”

They walked comfortably arm and arm, glancing almost shyly at one another as they went.  They went straight to the nursing station to inquire what the results of Dr. Ferguson’s request were.  They were told that the doctor was still there and they should talk to him.  They went to the storage area and found it in chaos.

“Dan – can we please speak to you privately? “ Lara asked.

He looked up and saw Heath standing there also and hoped they had some news about Nick.  He gestured for them to follow him into his office and closed the door.

“Heath – have you found Nick?” Dan asked.

“Well now, we haven’t found him but we have a pretty good idea what has happened to him and we need your help.” Heath explained.

“My help?  Certainly, I’m at your service.  We all feel pretty bad about this you know.  Now what can I do?”

“First – I have to ask you not to repeat this to anyone and I mean no one.  Nick’s life may depend on it.” Heath said firmly.

“Of course, you have my word.  What is going on?”

“It looks like Nick has been kidnapped and right out of this hospital.  We don’t know for sure if Jeff is involved or is another victim yet.  But we do need to know the results of your drug inventory.”

“Kidnapped from here?  Oh my God!  Have you received a ransom note?”

“Yes and no.  We received a message that Nick is fine for now but further instructions will follow.  We really don’t know much else but we figure whoever did this would have had to have drugged Nick to get him out of here.  Did you finish the inventory?”

“Yes we did.  A new shipment was delivered earlier this week and it looks like almost the whole shipment is gone.  The nurses just thought nobody had put it away on the shelves yet and didn’t think much about it until we tried to find them today.” Dan was puzzled at the look of relief on Heath’s face.  “Why is that so important?”

“Well now, we were thinking that if they mean to keep Nick drugged up while they have him, it probably means that they intend to let him go if their demands are met.  I know that most kidnappers usually just kill their victims so they can’t identify them.  At least, this gives us some hope that they will follow through and return him to us.”

Lara asked, “Dan – what type of drugs did they take?”

“Mostly sleeping powders and pain killers.  There’s a whole box of needles missing also.  Danielle thinks some of bandages and ointments are not accounted for but it’s hard to tell as we don’t keep a strict inventory on them as we do the drugs.”

“Heath – it looks like they mean to take care of Nick.  Why would they take the items that are necessary to keep him healthy if they are planning on killing him?  It doesn’t make sense otherwise.  Thanks Dan.  Heath – I have to get ready to go on duty.  Please keep me informed of any new developments.” Lara said as she tried to give him hope.

“Thanks to both of you.  I reckon I better go check out that other lead we have and get back to see if another note has been delivered.  This waiting surely does wear on a man.  I’ll see you soon Lara.”  Heath said deliberately as he stood to leave.

 * * * * * * * * * *

Jarrod knocked on the door to his mother’s bedroom and entered at her invitation.  “Mother, Adam and I are going to take a break and have a bite to eat.  Would you like to join us?”

“Yes son, I think I’ll join you but I don’t know how much eating I can do.  I want to hear what, if anything, you have discovered.  Also, I have composed a telegram to send to the ranch.  With everything that has happened today, we forgot to let Audra and Silas know what’s happened here.  I know they were both preparing a special welcome for Nick.  SSSilas was preparing those chocolate cookies for him.  Oh Jarrod….” she sobbed, “Where’s my son?”

“Come on now pretty lady.  Remember the last time Nick was kidnapped.  Not only did he rescue his kidnapper from that mine collapsing, he ended up bringing Danny home to the ranch.  This situation we find ourselves in might not be as sinister as we are imagining.   The trouble is we are working in the dark here.  Heath has gone out to check out a few more leads we have.   Come have a cup of tea and see if you can eat something.  He should be home soon and hopefully have more information for us.” Jarrod coaxed his mother.

As he maneuvered his mother from the room, he hoped he was right.  But what else could he say?  He could see that she was nearing the end of her rope with this latest crisis.  His mother was a formidable woman but to fear the loss of the same son in just a few weeks had to be taking a heavy toll on her.  His conscious was reminding him that he never did get around to talking to his brother.  With the preparations for this trial, he had kept putting it off, thinking that he would wait until Nick was settled in at the ranch.  Now he might not ever have the chance to let his brother know what he really meant to him and get their relationship back to where it was before his arrogance derailed it.

Part 6

Heath walked into Jarrod’s house to find everyone in the dining room.  The hopeful look on Victoria’s face twisted his heart painfully.  He knew he might be able to ease her mind some but it was not enough.  It wouldn’t be enough until Nick was back with them.  He saw Jarrod give him a small shake of his head indicating that they had nothing new to report.  He sat down at the table and told them what had been discussed with Dr. Ferguson and Lara.  He waved away Maria when she tried to put a plate of food in front of him.

Victoria intervened, “Maria you just set that down in front of him.  Heath – you are going to eat.  I know you don’t feel like it sweetheart, neither did I.  But you must.  We don’t know what the future holds and we must be ready to act when we do.  Come now – Nick needs you to be healthy and alert.” She knew that there was no better motivator for her son to eat than to make him think he might be let Nick down in some way if he didn’t.  She almost smiled as she saw him tuck into his food.

“Heath – did you find out anything about Susan Montgomery?” Adam asked.

“Found her place and talked some with her landlady.  She gave her notice round a week ago.  Miz. Sturton, the landlady said she forfeited almost a whole month’s rent and told her the same story Lara said she told at the hospital.  Miz Sturton also told me that she didn’t act like no expectant bride she had ever seen.  Said she seemed nervous and in a hurry like she was trying to get away from someone not going off with the man she loved.  Miz Sturton thought maybe by her odd behavior that she was pressured into marrying this guy and was having second thoughts.  She also told me that she was a good tenant that paid her rent on time and never had any gentlemen callers up to her room.  She’s already cleaned out the room and rented it to someone else so I didn’t get a chance to look for any clues there.  Told me that it was neat as a pin and I wouldn’t have found nothing anyways.  I asked if she had left a forwarding address and Miz Sturton said she asked for one but Susan said she didn’t have one yet and would write once she got settled.  Sounds mighty suspicious if you ask me.” Heath finished as he started back into the meal in front of him.

Jarrod rubbed his chin as he said, “Yes, it does Heath.  That young lady definitely could be involved in all of this.  She had access to the missing drugs and if the kidnapper wanted to keep Nick healthy, she would be perfect for the job.  Now the question is – is she the master mind or just a hireling?  Adam what do you think?”

“Too soon to tell Jarrod.  Either of your suggestions could be true.  You spent a lot of time at the hospital over the past few weeks, what was your impression of her?” Adam countered.

“Nick called her that pesky Nurse Montgomery.  Didn’t like her too much.  He said every time he would  talk Lara into letting him do something, she would point out all the hazards and then he wouldn’t be able to do it.  Teased him some that she was sweet on him and didn’t want him to hurt himself but didn’t see no sign of it myself.  She just seemed to be the by the book type.  From what I seen, I don’t figure her for the mastermind.  Mother – you spent more time around her than anybody, what do you think?”  Heath gently asked.

“Heath dear, I think your impressions are correct.  She was always very formal and did not exchange pleasantries like most of the other nurses.  She was very competent though and I noticed that the doctor’s valued her opinions.  I remember one time Nick complaining about her and the doctor said that she might not have the best bedside manner but she was by far the most observant nurse they had.  He said she had saved many a life by seeing something everyone else had missed.  She seemed very dedicated and I have a hard time picturing her as someone who would organize a kidnapping.  Maybe she is being blackmailed or possibly is trying to hide from someone and needs a chance to disappear with some money in her pocket book.”  Victoria said thoughtfully trying to sort out her impressions of this woman who had tended her son.

“Those are very good deductions, Missus Barkley, if she is involved.  Right now we can’t rule anything out.  We need more help here.  I have a couple of agents I use for undercover work that might be useful in this situation.  They are a husband and wife team that very discreet.  I know you want to be careful not to appear that the police are involved.  They would be perfect.  May I have your permission to bring them in?” Adam asked Victoria knowing her word would be the one that carried the most weight.

Victoria looked uncertainly at her sons before she answered.  Jarrod saw her dilemma and felt further clarification from Adam was needed.  “Adam, before we make a decision here, what exactly do you have in mind?”

“I’d like for Justin to go to the local hangouts around where Jeff used to live.  I’m too well known around there to be effective and word would probably get out that I was asking questions.  Beth, on the other hand, can follow up on Susan.  They are the two best leads we have so far.  That way, you and I can concentrate on going through your case notes and follow that path.  We can’t afford to leave any stone unturned.”

Victoria appeared to come to a decision while Adam was talking.  “Adam, go ahead if you think it’s best.  We will have to rely on your expertise in these matters.  I have every confidence that you won’t do anything that will endanger Nick.  Now that has been decided, I think I’ll leave you gentlemen and retire.”

“Adam – you haven’t mentioned anything for me to do.  I can’t just sit here and do nothing.  I’m real good at blending in at saloons or such. I’ve helped Jarrod a time or two in the past when he needed some help on a case.” Heath said anxious to do something.

“Heath – don’t worry about keeping busy.  Jarrod and I are going to need you to be our contact with the outside world.  There will be plenty to keep you occupied.  First, though, I’d like you to be outside the hospital real early tomorrow.  Talk to some of the people who are around that time of day.  Maybe someone saw something that we can use.  By the time we were making our inquiries, we missed most of the people who might have been around this morning.  But for now, I’ll let you gentlemen get off to bed.  I am going to sneak out and try to set our plan in motion.  I will try to get back before dawn.”

Heath said his goodnights and slowly made his way back to his room.  He couldn’t believe how long this day had been.  It had started out so full of anticipation just to end with so much anxiety and so many questions.  Where was Nick?  Was he still alive?  Why did they take him in the first place?  Would they let him go?

And now this thing with Lara.  She sure was mighty fine.  He couldn’t believe what had happened tonight.  Guilt threatened to overpower him for a moment.  Here his brother was missing and he had been standing in the street passionately kissing Lara.  No – he stopped himself.  Nick would be the last one to begrudge him a moment of comfort in this whole mess.  Heath gathered his memories of his brother close to his heart and felt the guilt lift away.  Heath heard Nick’s voice clearly tell him “Hold your head up boy.  You got nothing to be ashamed of”.    He almost smiled as he laid his head on his pillow.

 * * * * * * * * * *

Nick woke the next morning feeling disorientated.  At first, he couldn’t remember where he was then the events of the previous day came flooding back.  This whole situation didn’t feel right to him but he couldn’t come up with another explanation.  Why would Jeff and Susan do this if Jarrod hadn’t hired them?  If is wasn’t for these damn legs of his, he would just get up and go right back to the ranch himself.  He wondered if he could talk Jeff into taking him there.  He had snuck food and even a bottle of whisky into the hospital for him after Nick had done some talking.  Maybe if he offered him more money than Jarrod, he’d take him home.  Home – that’s where he wanted to be more than anything.  He saw Susan come through the door with a tray.

‘Good morning Nick.  How are you doing?  You seemed to have a restful night anyway.”

“Morning Susan.  I don’t want anymore drugs.  Make me too groggy.  I can’t think straight.  Where’s Jeff?” Nick said trying very hard to enunciate the words correctly.  He was having trouble making the words come out right and it was frustrating him to no end.

“Jeff will be in shortly.  How about having a bit of breakfast and then we will get you washed up?  I know you must be feeling a bit unclean.  That’s one thing I liked about you at the hospital.  You bathed every day.  You wouldn’t believe how many of the male patients I had to convince that bathing more than once a week wouldn’t hurt them.” Susan chatted avoiding the topic of the drugs.

Nick allowed Susan to help him sit up.  She placed the tray on his lap and urged him to eat.  He picked desultorily at the food not really having much of an appetite.  Jeff finally appeared and greeted Nick cheerfully.  He helped him use the chamber pot and then came back with a basin of hot water.  After he finished bathing Nick, Susan came in with a clean basin of water.

“Jeff, can you place some pillows under Nick’s back so I can wash his hair.” Susan instructed as she set down the water.  She held his head gently as she poured the warm water over his hair.

As she massaged the soap in, Nick couldn’t help sighing with pleasure.  Maybe she wasn’t as pesky as he thought.  She sure had magic fingers.  He couldn’t remember every feeling this good by someone washing his hair.  He was sorry when she finished up and was drying his hair with a towel.  She finger combed it when she was done and patted him gently on the side of his face.

“Now doesn’t that feel better.  I’ll leave you with Jeff to get you dressed and then we can get you into your chair and out of this room for a while.  That will give me a chance to clean up the sheets and freshen up the room.  Jeff, maybe Nick would like to sit out on the porch and get some sunshine.” Susan said as she left them alone.

Now that he had Jeff alone, he wanted to try to find out if he could be persuaded to get him the hell out of here.  "Jeff, much as I appreciate all you and Susan are doing for me, all I really want to do is go home.  Can you take me out to the ranch?” Nick almost pleaded.

“Nick – you know we can’t do that.  Jarrod hired us especially to keep you here while your mother has a chance to recuperate.  He’d be mighty mad at us for not following his instructions." Jeff replied.

“Come on Jeff.  You know I need to be at home.  How much is he paying you?  I’ll double it.  I promise I’ll make sure you don’t get in any trouble.” Nick cajoled.

“No body would hire us again if we listened to what the patient said and not our employer.  It won’t be so bad Nick, you’ll see.  This is a mighty fine place and the time will go by so quick you will be back at the hospital to get those casts off before you know it.”

Nick was disappointed but figured he’d keep working on him.  Then he thought of something else.  “Can you get a message to Jarrod or better yet to Heath?”

“I have to go for more supplies at the end of the week so I could send something then if you want.”

“Yeah, I guess I can last out the week if I have to.” Nick said glumly.  He’d hoped that if he could get a message to Heath that he would come and get him right away.  Maybe he was on his way right now.  He just couldn’t figure Heath abiding by this decision.  He knew his brother and he wouldn’t just leave him to the care of strangers away from his home like this.  That was about the only thing he felt certain of right now.

Heath had already been canvassing the area around the hospital for about two hours when he saw Lara coming out of the main entrance.  He watched her face light up when she saw him and felt himself respond in kind.  He was fascinated by her graceful movements as she hurried to his side.

“Good morning Heath.  Are you here to escort me to the restaurant?” Lara asked breathlessly.

“Morning Lara.  I was here trying to find out if anyone saw anything yesterday morning and thought it if my timing was right I might get to see you too.  Could use a break myself to tell you the truth.”

After they were seated at the restaurant, Lara asked if there was any new developments.

“Nope – not a one.  Nobody I talked to this morning seen anything that could help us.  It’s like they disappeared into thin air.  Mighty frustrating I can tell you.  You’d reckon that someone would have seen him.” Heath sighed deeply in frustration.

Lara beckoned a waitress over and asked, “Margie, do you remember that handsome dark haired man in the wheelchair with Jeff from the other morning?  You know the one who was flirting with you.”

“Sure do Dr. Collins.  He’d be hard one to forget.  Why do you ask?”

“I was wondering if he was in yesterday morning.”

“You bet he was.  Early like if I remember rightly.  He ate three full breakfasts and was eyeing the pie when Jeff reminded him that they had to get back to the hospital.”

Heath quickly asked, “Do you remember about what time they were in here and did you see which way they went when they left?”

Margie looked at Heath curiously as she answered, “Best as I can recollect, it was just after we opened at six.  They stayed around an hour or so before I saw them leave..  Wait a minute, I did notice something funny though.  I was serving coffee at that table over there and saw Jeff pushing the dark haired man down the street.  I remember thinking that if Jeff was in such an all fired hurry to get back why were they going in the opposite direction away from the hospital.   What’s going on here doctor?”

“Nick and Jeff are missing and we are trying to retrace their steps and see if we can find them.  Thanks, Margie, you’ve been a big help.  If you think of something else, can you send a message to the hospital for me?  We would really appreciate it.” Lara asked.

“Missing?  My word – what’s the world coming to?  Sorry to hear that.  I’ll ask around some here for you if you want and be glad to pass on anything I might hear.  Would you like your usual doctor?”

Lara and Heath placed their order and waited until Margie left the table before discussing the matter any further.

“Well, Heath, finally someone remembers seeing them at least.  They were here until around seven.  There’s not much open around here at that time of day except this restaurant and a few grocers as I am sure you discovered.  Where could they have been going?”

“Don’t rightly know that Lara.  Hard to believe that Nick wouldn’t want to go right back to the hospital to wait for us.  Jeff must have had one powerful spur to get him to cooperate.”  Heath wondered aloud.

Nick was getting more frustrated by the moment.  Susan and Jeff were going about their business like all was normal.  He sat on the porch and tried to get his bearing on where he might be.  When he asked Jeff if he could use his crutches, he was told that they had been forgotten but Jeff would get them at the end of the week when he went for supplies.  He was trapped on this damn porch without them.

Susan was stirring the pot of soup she had prepared when Jeff came into the room.

“Better put some sleeping powder in Nick’s bowl before you serve it.” He whispered.

“Why?  He’s not giving us any trouble.  We should save them to keep him quiet at night so we can get some sleep.”

“Our employers want him drugged up while he’s here.  They don’t want him to remember too much of this.  Get the drugs, Susan.” Jeff ordered.

“Jeff, we don’t have to do that.  I thought we were only going to drug him if he got agitated or tried to get away.  He’s cooperating beautifully.  Why drug him up when we don’t have to?”

“Susan – don’t argue with me.  Just get the drugs or I will.  The less he remembers – the better it will be for everyone.  Now go.”

“Alright – but I don’t like it.  I’ll be right back.” Susan said reluctantly.

Jeff thought it was a good thing he hadn’t told her what else their employers wanted them to do.  He’d just do it by himself when she was out of the room.  That way there wouldn’t be any arguments from her.

After Heath arrived back at Jarrod’s, he saw that everyone was gathered in the study.  Adam and Jarrod were bent over the desk studying a piece of paper.  Victoria sat in a chair looking very worried.  Heath went over and gave her a kiss on the cheek.

Heath surmised that they had received another message.  “Jarrod – is that what I think it is?”

“Yes, Brother Heath, your assumption is correct. It is another note.  This message just came a few minutes ago.  A young boy said he had been paid to deliver it by a man but couldn’t really describe him.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be what were waiting for though.” Jarrod stroked his chin thoughtfully.

“Nick Barkley is still fine.  If you want to keep him that way then have Jarrod Barkley go to the Stockton telegraph office on Monday at 9 in the morning to receive further instructions.  Do not be late.” Jarrod read.

Part 7

There was a moment of silence after Jarrod read the latest message.  Adam spoke first, “Well now I think we can say with a degree of certainty that this kidnapping ties into Jarrod’s case.  Why else would the kidnappers want Jarrod to be the only one to be in Stockton to receive the next set of instructions?  Why leave it until Monday when Jarrod is supposed to be in court?  It sounds like whoever is behind this wants Jarrod preoccupied and out of the way.“

“It makes sense Adam.  But the big question is who wants me out of the way?  For the life of me, I can’t figure that one out.  I have had the full cooperation from everyone that I can find that could be involved at the San Francisco Loan and Trading Company.  Not one of them seems defensive or that they are hiding anything.    What am I missing?” Jarrod fretted.

Victoria had listened to their conversation thoughtfully and now felt a need to speak up.  “Son, what have you always told me you do in cases such as this?  Do you not look more closely at who has the most to gain?  If your client was not accused, where would the authorities look next?”

“Mother – you are right.  This situation with Nick has had me going in circles.  I need to focus on this investigation in the manner I usually would.  But first, I must meet with the judge to ask for a continuance and explain the circumstances I now find myself in.  Once that is done, I will be able to concentrate fully on this case.  Heath, can I ask you to go to Harry Morgan’s home and bring him back here while I am gone?  I need to go over everything with him again.  Adam, I’ll let you keep looking through the case files.  Maybe you can come up with some questions that I haven’t asked yet.  Let’s meet back here in two hours and get started.”  Jarrod said with more confidence that he had felt in the past few days.

After the men had left, Victoria sat quietly in the chair by the fire staring at the flames.  She somehow knew that her sons were going to bring Nick back.  The only worry that kept creeping up on her now was what perils they would face and what condition Nick would be in when he was finally back where he belonged.  She felt so tired and knew she had to get back to the ranch to renew her spirit.  That’s where she felt closest to Tom and desperately needed that communion with him now.  Victoria’s spine straightened as she decided that she would return to Stockton with Jarrod.

Nick was perplexed by the heavy fog that never seemed to lift.   Every movement took a great deal of concentration.  Words stumbled from his mouth with increased effort.  The morning routine had been completed and he had just finished what little breakfast he could stomach.  He knew he wanted to say something to Susan but he had trouble remembering what it was.  Think Nick – he told himself.  You can do it.  Wait a minute – he remembered he wanted to send a note to Heath and one to Cory.

“Ssssussan.  Can you …..can you .    help… me?

“Nick – what’s the matter?  Can you tell me what you need help with?” Susan asked.

“Need to ….  to write a note …  a note to…Cory” he finally got out.  Who else did he want to send a note to?  He knew there was someone else but he couldn’t remember now.  Maybe it would come to him again later.

“Cory Haines?  The young boy you became friendly with at the hospital?”

“That’s him.  Promised him I……..would write…when I got home.  Don’t want him…to..think…I..forgot about him.”

“Why I wouldn’t mind at all, Nick.  But why don’t we get you comfortable in bed first.  Then I will get the writing materials and we can get started.”  Susan said as she called for Rick to assist her.  They got Nick back into bed where he was visibly fighting to stay awake.

“Okay Nick – we’re all set.  What would you like to say?”

“Cory – sorry it took….so long to write.   Had to….get settled in.  Have  you got any news yet?  Don’t….worry none if you….haven’t.  Remember my promise.  You don’t have to go to….orphanage…can stay at….the ranch.  Your friend – Nick”

“Why Nick that’s so nice of you.  I’m surprised you would want to take on a young boy – not being married yet and all. “ Susan exclaimed.

“Wouldn’t be the…..first time.  Can’t unnnerstand men…like his father.  Men are supposed to….supposed to protect their loved ones.  Not hurt them.  Don’t like it at all.  Never did but….worse since Heath came…to live with us.  Saw first hand how it stays…with a body.  So many out there….like that.  Why Danny ……..”

Susan listened in amazement while Nick rambled on about the different boys he had rescued and brought back to the ranch.  He wasn’t anything like she had thought from his stay in the hospital.  She believed he was an arrogant, spoiled rich man who was used to everyone waiting on him hand and foot.   She thought this experience might bring him down a peg or two.  Now that she had gotten to know him better, she realized that he was just a natural leader who expected his orders to be followed.  It sounded as if he not only ran the ranch but worked as hard as his hands.  And this afternoon, she discovered he had a big heart too.  She was starting to regret letting Rick talk her into this whole mess she found herself in.  But she owed Rick and knew with their history, she probably would have done it anyway.  But she didn’t have to like it.

She noticed that he had finally succumbed to the drugs.  What a stubborn man!  He fought those drugs longer than anyone she had ever met before.  She was starting to worry about the amount they were giving him.  If they kept this up, Nick was going to be in for a hard time of it when they tried to wean him off.  She decided to talk to Rick about lowering the dosage. With both his legs in casts, he couldn’t give them that much trouble.  Nothing they couldn’t handle anyway.  He wasn’t eating properly either with all those drugs in his system.  She remembered how much food he put away at the hospital and now he just picked at his food.  Susan went over to the bed and gently tucked the blankets around him and hardened her resolve to change the situation.

Jarrod was escorting Harry Morgan to the door when he heard someone use the knocker.  Oh no, he thought, I hope no one has come to call.  He had just spent an intense four hours going through all the evidence with Adam and Harry.  The last thing he felt like doing was entertaining company.  He was surprised to see Dr. Lara and an older gentleman standing at the door.

“Good afternoon Doctor.  What a pleasant surprise! Won’t you come in?” Jarrod said relieved that the visitor was for Heath and not for him.

“Thank you Jarrod.  May I introduce my father, Dr. Gerald Collins.  Father, this is Heath’s older brother Jarrod.”  Lara said formally. “Sorry to surprise you with our visit but after talking with Heath this morning, I was hoping you might have some further developments.”

“Dr. Collins – please come in.  I believe we have some mutual friends and that we have been at some of the same social functions but have never been formally introduced before.  It’s a pleasure to finally meet you sir.” Jarrod replied as he indicated that they follow him to the study.

“I’ve heard good things about you too, Mr. Barkley.  I hope the rumors are true and that you will be running for a government seat soon.  We need more men like you overseeing our interests in Washington.”

“Please, make it Jarrod.  Mother – Heath – the Doctor Collins’ have come for a visit.”

Victoria was surprised to see that Lara’s father was someone she had met previously.  “Gerald – I never put together the connection between you and Lara.  Now I know where she gets that lovely bedside manner from.” Victoria said.  She went on to explain when she saw the question in her sons’ eyes.  “Gerald did some surgery on your father many years ago when he had badly broken arm.”

“Ah yes – I believe he had a battle with an untamed stallion you were trying to transport back to Stockton.  If I remember correctly, that horse won that particular round.  It’s a pleasure to see you again, Victoria.  I didn’t realize Heath was your son either.” Gerald said privately thinking that he only remembered two sons and a daughter.

Victoria knew what he was thinking and just smiled politely as she quipped, “A small world, isn’t it?”

Heath had risen and was now standing beside Lara.  Victoria saw the looks passing between the two of them and realized Heath was badly smitten.  She hoped that this would work out for the two of them as she really like Lara.  She was exactly the down to earth, no-nonsense woman that Heath needed.  She wanted to give them some time alone.

“Gerald – would you mind having tea on the patio with me?  I have been cooped up all day and could use a breath of fresh air.  Jarrod, dear, would you please ask Maria to bring out a tray to the patio?” she asked hoping her son would get the hint to leave the room also.

After they were seated, Gerald asked if there was any further news regarding the disappearance of her other son.  Victoria brought him up to date as she knew Heath was probably doing the same thing with Lara.

“I’m so sorry we had to meet again under these circumstances, Victoria.  It’s so hard when something happens to one of our children, isn’t it?  Especially when one is without the benefit of having a spouse to lean on.  I had twenty-five years with my Eleanor and although she has been gone almost eight years now, I still turn to ask her advice regarding the children until I remember that she is gone.” Gerald spoke sympathetically.

Victoria regarded Gerald with curiosity.  She wondered if there were any hidden meanings behind his statement and how he felt about the burgeoning romance between her son and his daughter.

“Yes – it is a trying time right now and I do miss Tom’s presence keenly.  However, I am lucky to have two strong sons to lean on and the knowledge that they will not rest until my other son is returned to us.”

“My memory must be failing me in my old age.  When I think of you and Tom, I remember two sons and a daughter but Heath certainly reminds me of Tom in many ways now that I think about it.”

“Yes – out of all my children, Heath resembles Tom physically the most.  I have to admit I am sometimes startled at times at how alike they are.  Heath has only lived with us for the past four years but I sometimes forget that I did not give birth to him.  He has become as dear to me as the rest of my children.” Victoria stated plainly.  She decided to bring up the situation with their children.  “I am happy that Heath and Lara are interested in one another.    I spent quite a bit of time at the hospital Gerald, and I got to know your daughter quite well.  She’s a remarkable young woman.”

Gerald looked pensive before he answered.  “Yes, she is that, isn’t she?  I have to admit to being a tad concerned about where this relationship will lead my daughter.  She has worked so hard to establish herself at the hospital.  No easy feat for a woman, you know.  She also has dreams of becoming a surgeon.  I intend no slur on Stockton but it is not exactly up to the standards medically that she deserves.  Your son seems to be a fine young man but I do not believe he is the right man for my daughter.”

Victoria knew that the gauntlet had been dropped at her feet and carefully considered how to respond.  “Gerald, a man of your infinite wisdom should realize that in the end, it does not matter what either you or I think.  It is those two young people who will decide where this relationship will go from here.  I think that you are also short changing your daughter.  Lara doesn’t strike me as a young woman who does not know her own mind.  I sure she will think with her heart as well as her head.   And if she really feels that Heath is the one for her, she will come up with some kind of solution that will make both of them happy without giving up her dreams.”

‘You may be right Victoria.  We will just have to see won’t we?” Gerald replied.   He said to himself though, I knew she would champion her son.  But I am going to do everything in my power to make Lara realize what a poor choice she would be making if she pursued this relationship.  Heath Barkley was not the man for her.

Heath had brought Lara up to date on what had happened since they had breakfast this morning.  He glanced outside to see his mother and Lara’s father having an intense conversation.  He figured he knew what they were talking about.

“Lara – your father’s not too happy with these feelings that are developing between us, is he?” Heath thought he’d better just come out and ask.

“You are probably right Heath.  Although, he hasn’t really come out and said anything to me.  I can tell that he is just biding his time until he does.  I love my father very much but he raised me to think for myself.  I know that once we do have a chance to have a real discussion about us, he will come around.  I am content to leave it as is right now Heath.  There is too much going on in your life with Nick missing for you to pay too much attention to my father’s displeasure.  It is of no consequence in the scheme of things.  Let’s just take one day at a time and see where it leads us.” Lara soothed.

Heath felt a wave of relief.  He wanted to pursue these feelings he had for Lara but she was right about the timing.  His heart swelled at her understanding of the situation and the way she was content to move slowly right now.  As soon as they had Nick back though, he intended to move fast and claim her as his.

Rick was sitting in Nick’s room waiting for him to wake up.  He was thinking of the argument he just had with Susan.  He was glad that she agreed to go for a nap and discuss it further tonight.  Rick had the feeling that he was going to have to work around her now.  Her conscience was obviously bothering her.  He also wondered if she was starting to feel more than just a natural concern for her patient or was something more developing here.  He’d have to keep a close eye on her.  His employers were paying them a large sum of money to do what they were told and his wasn’t going to take any chances of possibly loosing the promised bonus.

He’d just have to accelerate their plans and start giving Nick a dose of that drug they had given him.  What did they call it again?  Oh yeah, it was some kind of Mexican name. He remembered now that they had called it peyote.
