Part 8
Heath returned to the study after escorting Lara and her
father to the door. He couldn’t believe
his luck. A woman like Lara was
interested in him. He quickly reminded
himself that there were many obstacles in their way especially the matter at
hand – Nick. With every passing hour
that his brother was gone, he felt the panic he kept trying to keep at bay
creeping over him. He couldn’t bring
himself to even think that they might not find him in time. He just had to keep focused on looking for
some answers that would bring Nick back.
Jarrod and Adam were hovering over the desk looking at
some papers. Victoria was nowhere to be
seen. Heath figured she must have gone
back to her room to rest. He hoped that
Lara’s father had not upset her. She
didn’t need anymore trouble in her life right now. He would talk to her later and find out. His conscience would not allow his mother to
be further burdened because of him. If
he had to, he would put his relationship with Lara on hold until this mess was
cleared up.
Adam looked up as Heath walked in and said, “Heath, we
think we have another suspect here. I’m
going to move my operatives in this direction.”
“Who is it?” Heath asked.
Jarrod answered slowly, “I still don’t know if we going in
the right direction or not but I believe Clive Harrington is the only one who
could possibly benefit from Harry’s imprisonment. I dismissed Clive at first because of his close relationship with
Harry – he’s godfather to his daughter.
Also he was so cooperative. He
was the one to contact me to take this case and even offered to pay my fee. But he is the only one who has the knowledge
and opportunity to fleece the trust funds.“
“Jarrod, I’m a mite confused on exactly what your client
is charged with. Can you explain in to
me again?” Heath inquired.
“Well now little brother, it goes something like
this. George Harrington set up a trust
fund for his grandson that couldn’t be touched by anyone but the grandson until
he reached the age of twenty-one. Even
then, he could only withdraw twenty-five percent of initial trust, which I
might add was a million dollars. The
old codger that set this up tied the money up with a dozen more stipulations
after that so eventually at least fifty percent of the initial trust would be
inherited by the grandson’s heirs.
Unfortunately, the grandson and his father caught scarlet fever and
died. George’s daughter went to claim
the trust fund and found that there was only about fifty thousand dollars left
in it. All the entries for the fund
show transfers out authorized by Harry but no trace of the money can be
found. It’s possible that Clive forged
Harry’s signature and moved the funds into some dummy accounts that can’t be
readily traced. This is a significant
amount of money we are talking about and could be the motive we have been
looking for. If the boy had not died,
the thief would have had thirteen years to cover his tracks.”
Heath nodded his head as he replied, “I reckon that’s
pretty fair idea. Men have been killed
for a hell lot less than that. What can
I do now?”
“Well, Brother
Heath, I need you to do what you do best – gamble. I need you to visit some of San Francisco’s more elegant gaming
establishments and find out if Harrington is or has been in debt there. If he hasn’t been using those, then you can
try some of the more unsavory ones. I
have found that if a man needs money, it is either due to poor investments or
gambling debts. I looked into his
investments and found that he has not had any sudden reversals recently. That leaves the gambling debts as our most
promising avenue to pursue.”
“I figure I know the most likely unsavory gaming halls but
you’ll have to give me a list of the other ones you want me to try. I ain’t been in too many of those except the
one you and Nick took me to a couple of years ago. We should also try China Town.
I heard that a lot of the swells from Nob Hill have been visiting there
to try out the opium dens. The tonne
gets them all doped up and then swindles their money at the tables.” Heath
mused.
“I am going to send Justin and Beth to China Town,
Heath. They have many contacts there
and have done a few favors for the tonne in the past so can move around without
worrying about a knife in the back.
Let’s leave that area to them.
I’m going to sneak out now and put our plan in motion. Heath, maybe you should try to get some rest
as you will probably be out till the wee hours of the morning. Jarrod, I’ll be back to talk to you before
you leave for Stockton.” Adam said as
he took his leave.
Jeff mixed the drugs in a small amount of water as he watched Nick slowly wake
up. He spoke cheerfully to Nick, “Hey
there buddy – you’re finally up. You
must be thirsty. Here – have a bit of
water. Drink slowly now.”
He lifted Nick’s head and watched in satisfaction as he
drank the water in the glass. Jeff
propped the pillows behind him and tried to make him comfortable. He anticipated Nick’s need of the chamber
pot and went about assisting him in a no-nonsense manner while watching to see
if the drugs were starting to take effect.
When he saw Nick’s eyes start to glaze over, he started talking.
“Nick, old chum, I went into San Francisco while you were
sleeping. I delivered your message to
Cory for you. I also went to see Jarrod
like you asked. He said to tell you to
have a little patience. He would send
you a note on Monday explaining everything.
I asked if I could talk to Heath but Jarrod told me that Heath has taken
your mother back to the ranch to recuperate.
The good news is that she’s seems to be doing better and just needs some
rest and should be as right as rain if she gets it. I told Jarrod that you wanted to go back to the ranch too but he
said that you would have to wait it out here for awhile. He also said, oh never
mind, you don’t want to hear this.” Jeff said coyly.
“Yes, I do. What
else did he say?” Nick barked.
“Well, he said something to the effect that he didn’t have
time right now to hold your hand and clean up one of your messes at the same
time. Don’t know exactly what he meant
by that but he seemed rather annoyed that I had bothered him, if you know what
I mean?” Jeff replied.
“What mess is talking about now? What does he mean – hold my hand? “he said
angrily.
“Well, he was muttering like he was talking to himself so
I don’t know if I caught it right, Nick.
Something to the effect, now let me think how he put it. Oh yes, first there was the trouble with you
and Heath and then something about Jerimiah and then running down your mother’s
health by your demands in the hospital.
Said he seemed to be always trying to clean up after one of your
escapades and he was tired of it.
Especially if it was taking a toll on your mother. Sorry, Nick, I didn’t want to tell you
this.”
Nick was flabbergasted at what Jeff had told him. He knew he’d been in a scrape or two that
Jarrod had to get him out of but he never knew that his brother resented the
fact. His mind was suddenly a
kaleidoscope of color and he kept hearing Jeff’s words repeat themselves over
and over again in his head.
Jarrod thought he was nothing but a bother. He was responsible for his mother’s ill
health. Jarrod wanted him out of the
way. He was tired of looking after his
brother. These words kept screaming at
him until he thought his head would explode.
He felt so strange like he was still asleep and caught up in a nightmare. But when he moved his hand to grip Jeff’s
arm, he knew he was awake.
Jeff watched Nick carefully and saw the confusion on his
face. He kept softly repeating what he
had said previously about Jarrod. If
his employers’ plan worked, by the time Nick Barkley left here, he would
practically hate his brother.
Part 9
Jeff observed that Nick seemed to be in some kind of
trance now. He thought it best if he
left him alone and let the drugs take over.
He had some preparations to make without Susan looking on and he didn’t
know how much longer she would sleep.
Nick didn’t notice Jeff leave the room. He was too busy trying to hold onto the bed so he wouldn’t float away as his body felt light as air. The colors in the room seemed to be much brighter. He kept closing his eyes to block it out but that was worse somehow. The colors kept dancing behind his closed lids but without shape or substance. He looked for the water glass as his throat was so dry but couldn’t get his hands to coordinate the movement. Every time he tried, he forgot what he was going to do and became fascinated by the trail of color left by his action. He waved his hand in front of face and stared in awe at the rainbow that appeared. All of a sudden, the room came into sharp focus. He saw Heath enter the room.
“It’s about time you got here. I knew you’d come and wouldn’t let Jarrod just send me off like this. Well, little brother, lets get moving. I don’t want to stay here a minute longer than I have to, let me tell you. Heath – what’s the matter? I know you don’t talk much but why aren’t you answering me? Heath….” Nick put his hand out to his brother only to see him disappear. His disappointment was crushing as he realized that Heath was not there at all. What the hell was going on? Nick felt a tingle of fear run up his spine. He tried again to focus on the whole situation but soon found himself smiling at the images he saw on the wall his fear forgotten.
The family was just finishing their
dinner when Victoria told Heath and Jarrod about her plans to return to the
ranch for the time being. “As worried
as I am about Nick, I don’t think my staying here will help him. I have seen both of you watching me with
concern in your eyes and you honestly have nothing to worry about. It would be better for all of us if you turn
all your attention to the matter at hand and get Nick home.”
“Mother, did Lara’s father upset you?” Heath asked full of concern.
“Oh sweetheart, don’t think for a moment that Gerald isn’t someone that I can’t handle. I understand his reservations about your relationship.” When she saw the look on Heath’s face she quickly added, “I said understand, son, not agree. He only wants what every parent wants for their child – their happiness. I believe that once he realizes that Lara must determine that for herself, he will accept any decision she makes. It’s a hard lesson to learn and I must admit, I struggle from time to time with that one myself. Just let your relationship with Lara take it’s natural course and the rest will fall into place eventually.”
“Thanks Mother. I surely am in luck there. Lara is one very understanding woman. She knows that I have to put all my energy into finding Nick and not courting so we are taking things pretty slow and easy anyway. Jarrod – did you make up that list for me?”
“Yes, Brother Heath, I did. I put the most likely establishments at the top of the list. But I have to warn you, that these gaming halls are noted for their discretion. You are going to have to be very careful how and who you engage in conversation. I suggest you watch for a patron whose tongue has been loosened by alcohol and needs an ear to bend. I also wrote a couple of letters of introduction for you. I know you won’t get past the doorkeeper at the Club Room on Washington Street without one.” Jarrod explained.
“Thanks Jarrod – that’ll make it a mite easier to get in alright. How much do you have in the safe? I’ll need a decent size stake for the fancier houses.”
“I believe that I have enough to cover you Brother Heath. I’ll get to you after dinner. Mother – I was planning on taking the earliest morning train tomorrow. Would that suit you as well?”
“I’d feel more comfortable taking the last train out tonight instead, if you don’t mind, dear. That way, if we encounter any delays, we still have time to make the timetable set out by the kidnappers.”
“Lovely lady, I do believe you are correct as always. Heath and I should get down to business right away if we hope to be at the train station in, let’s see, two hours, shall we say.”
“I’ll be ready son.” Victoria said as she thought, more than ready. She was looking forward to spending some time in her own room where she could be closer to Tom. She reflected on her conversation with Gerald. It seemed he knew exactly what it meant to lose a partner of so many years. Other than Gerald’s views on their children’s relationship, the time they had spent together this afternoon had been quite enjoyable. She smiled inwardly as she recalled some of the comments he made about some mutual acquaintances that Gerald had delivered with a scalding dry wit.
“I’m mighty glad I left that fancy suit here you made be buy for the Governor’s Ball last year. Knew I wouldn’t wear it any place in Stockton. I reckon I’ll need it at those places on your list.” Heath said hoping he would find out what he needed to know early on so he wouldn’t be stuck in that get-up too long.
“You are correct Brother Heath. You wouldn’t get past the door dressed as you are now. These people can be snobs of the first water. Just walk in and look down your nose at them and you will be accepted willingly. Now let’s get down to business shall we?” Jarrod encouraged his brother knowing how self-conscious Heath could be in what he considered the upper class.
The two brothers went over their plan again looking for any problems that might arise. Jarrod opened the safe to get Heath a stake for the night. He knew his little brother probably didn’t need as much as he was taking. Heath would probably come home with more that he took as his poker playing skills were legendary. It always fascinated Jarrod when he watched him in action. It was like a different man had taken the place of the brother he knew when Heath sat down to a serious game of poker. Jarrod realized that Heath could have probably earned a very good living at the game if he wanted to. Maybe he should caution him not to win too much. Nobody likes a newcomer to take all their money.
“Heath – just a word of warning. Don’t take playing too seriously. Many of these men may have more money than they could ever spend in a lifetime but they hate losing it. Especially to someone they don’t know. Win some – lose some but don’t go too much either way. Just be careful little brother.” Jarrod warned.
He continued, “I will wire you the details of the meeting with the kidnappers as soon as I can. I hope I can take the afternoon train back here tomorrow and then we can discuss whatever you might have learned tonight. I have a feeling that tomorrow morning is going to be the first step in a wild goose chase that the kidnapper wants me to follow. If Adam and I are correct, this is only a ploy to get me out of town but of course, we cannot take the chance that Nick might be harmed if I don’t follow their instructions. Adam is doing some digging of his own and will not come back to the house until tomorrow evening. If you have to get a hold of him before then, send a message with Maria to the Martin’s Green Grocers. Mr. Martin will get your note to Adam. Now is there anything else we might have forgotten?” Jarrod asked Heath more for his brother’s benefit than his own.
He had observed his brother’s quiet desperation over Nick’s disappearance. Jarrod was glad that Lara had come into Heath’s life at this time. He felt she was giving his brother the extra strength he needed right now. Jarrod knew that keeping busy was the only course of action they both needed right now. When he had a quiet moment to himself, a keen sense of loss overcame him. Why now? he kept asking himself. Why now when Nick had so much to deal with as it was. Those broken legs of his would be frustrating for him in the first place without having to deal with this abduction. He knew his brother well enough to know his inability to act would be driving him crazy. Heaven only knew how unpredictable Nick could be at times. He just hoped his brother would not do anything foolish that might cause himself more harm.
After Victoria and Jarrod had left for the train station, Heath slipped quietly out of the house. He walked several blocks out of way and doubled back. He was relieved that there didn’t appear to be anyone following him. The doorkeeper at the Club Room was as thorough as Jarrod had predicted. Heath kept his head up and gave the man a bored look as he handed over his letter of introduction. He gave an inward sigh of relief as he finally seemed to past muster and was admitted into the establishment. He soon spotted the high rollers table and waited patiently for a seat open up.
And so it went until daylight. He had visited four of the places on Jarrod’s list throughout the night. He was disheartened that he was no further ahead than when he started except to eliminate those establishments from the list. He figured he’d head back to Jarrod’s for a couple hours of sleep and try some of the seedier dens on the list in the afternoon. Those places always had a game going not like those ritzy joints that only started to get interesting after eight at night. They doubled as proper gentlemen’s clubs by day.
Jarrod checked his watch for the third time since he had arrived at the telegraph station. It was now nine thirty with no sign of the kidnappers. He watched Jerimiah slowly load the wagon across the street. He had insisted that he should come along to watch Jarrod’s back. Jerimiah had been waiting in the kitchen with Silas when Jarrod had gone down for breakfast. He had begged to join the search for Nick and finally convinced Jarrod that he would follow him anyway. He knew that Jerimiah felt beholden to Nick and would move heaven and earth to help in any way that he could. A young boy of about eight came into the room with an envelope in his hand.
“Mr. Barkley, sir, a man gave me a whole silver dollar iffen I brought this here note to you.” the boy said as he handed over the envelope to Jarrod.
“My thanks to you, son. A whole silver dollar you say. Do you think you could point out the man to me? Is he waiting for a reply?” Jarrod asked the boy calmly not wanting to scare him off.
“I’d never seen him before, if that’s what you’re askin. Just rode up on his horse, asked him if I knew where the telegraph were at and iffn I would give you this letter. Threw me the silver dollar and rode off fast like. I come here right off, Mr. Barkley. Didn’t stop till I got here.”
Jarrod sighed but figured it was a long shot anyway. He thanked the boy again and opened the envelope. He read, “Your brother hasn’t yet realized the seriousness of his situation. If you want him to continue to be unharmed, write the following note to him. If he behaves himself and you do exactly as instructed, he just might return to you in one piece. Write the note word for word. Do not try to send a hidden message as it will be thoroughly examined before he reads it.
Dear Nick,
Please cooperate with your caretakers. Your release could
be endangered if you don’t.
Remember it is for your own good that you heed my
counsel.
Your brother, Jarrod
Take the afternoon train back to San Francisco and have this note ready to deliver. Further instructions will be forthcoming if you cooperate fully.”
Jarrod shook his head in puzzlement over this cryptic letter. What purpose was behind these instructions? If Nick was giving them that much trouble, why didn’t they just get rid of him? What kind of trouble could a man with two broken legs give them anyway? Wait a minute, he was talking about Nick here. He could be giving them a hell of a time. Were they trying to let them know that he was unharmed and they were serious about releasing him unharmed? Why this elaborate plot? So many unanswered questions that he had no explanation for.
He quickly composed a wire to Heath and made sure it was sent before he left the telegraph office. He discreetly nodded at Jerimiah before mounting Jingo to return to the ranch. Once he had updated his mother and Audra, he would be on his way back to San Francisco.
Heath checked his watched and thought he’d better head to the train station
after this hand was finished. He was glad
that he had sat at this table as the men he was playing wouldn’t mind if he
left now. He was just about even from
when he sat down and the timing couldn’t have been better. He finally a glimmer of information to give
Jarrod too. He couldn’t wait to tell
him and Adam what he had learned. He
folded his hand and waited until the final cards had been shown. He made his apologies and quickly left the
saloon.
His mind was buzzing with the information he now had so he wasn’t paying close attention to the man who came up behind him at the station. It wasn’t until he felt the sharp poke of a knife in his back that he returned to his usual wary state.
A deep voice spoke close to his ear. “Mister – you been asking the wrong questions to the wrong people. You should stay at home and mind your own business now, ya hear. Could be dangerous for you otherwise.”
Heath felt the man pull back and shifted his stance onto one leg. He swung around quickly and tried to jump out of the way of the knife’s flashing blade. The knife swiped down the front of chest tearing through his flesh. The man dropped the knife and disappeared quickly. Heath stood swaying by the building and put his hand out to steady himself. The train pulled into the station while he concentrated on staying on his feet. He squinted down the side of the train watching for Jarrod to emerge. When he finally saw his brother disembark, he steeled himself against the pain and started to walk towards him. He was only a few feet away when Jarrod saw him. He felt a darkness overtake him and almost fell at this brother’s feet. He didn’t hear the startled “Mr. Heath” that Jerimiah shouted or feel himself being lifted up in the large man’s arms.
Jeff had given Nick his second dose of the peyote while Susan was
sleeping. He replayed the same
conversation from the day before and watched as Nick got more confused and
angry. He left him alone again and went
outside to take care of the horses.
Nick laid in bed trying to fight off the panicky feelings that were overwhelming him. He knew something was very wrong but couldn’t figure out what. He saw Heath come into the room and waited for him to say something to see if he was real or just his imagination again. Heath looked upset and put his hand out towards him. Nick saw blood appear on his chest just as he experienced a pain there.
“HEATHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH” he started screaming.
Part 10
Jarrod opened Heath’s shirt to see the extent of his
injuries. He quickly searched his
overnight bag for his spare shirt and pressed it up against his brother’s
chest.
“Quickly Jerimiah. We have to get him to the hospital. Thank God – the wound doesn’t look too deep but he is losing a lot of blood.” Jarrod said.
Jerimiah carried his burden easily and followed behind as Jarrod led the way. He jumped into the back of the hired buggy with Heath still in his arms.
“Don’t’ ya worry none now Mr. Heath. We done gonna get you to the hospital quick like and everything gonna be just fine. We gonna find Mr. Nick too. Your family sure don’t need no more trouble that’s for sure.” Jerimiah kept a steady stream of conversation going with the unconscious man and was relieved when the buggy slowed down to a stop at the doors of the hospital.
Jerimiah again followed Jarrod as he led the way into the hospital. He reluctantly relinquished the blonde man he had come to care so much about to the attendants and watched anxiously as they took him out of the room. Jarrod indicated that they should go to the waiting room until the doctor had finished with Heath.
Jarrod felt overwhelmed by the events of the day. He was no closer to finding Nick and now his other brother was wounded. He prayed that his assessment of the knife wound was correct. This young man had come to mean a lot to him. He had felt an affinity to the blonde stranger who had shown up at their door right from the first. He’d known almost from the beginning that this man was his father’s son and his brother.
As Heath settled into the family, Jarrod had come to respect him also. With all the trials and tribulations he had gone through in his young life, he still had an amazing tolerance towards the ignorance of his fellow man. The only area that riled him beyond reason was any reference that might bad mouth his mother. He rarely discussed her with the family and shared his childhood only under stress or careful probing. Jarrod felt that this was in respect for his own mother. He knew Heath held Victoria in the highest regard and would never knowingly say anything that he thought might hurt her.
Oh God – Mother, he thought. How am I going to tell her what’s happened now? He had been worried about her as it was. Now this. He knew her well enough to know that she would insist on taking the next train back here. She needed some time at the ranch to recoup her strength. Jarrod deliberated for a moment on whether he should wire her at all and came to the conclusion that if he didn’t, she would certainly be furious with him.
Jarrod stood up and stretched his legs. He informed Jerimiah that he was going to send a wire to Stockton and would be right back if the doctor returned. Before he had a chance to leave the room, Dr. Ferguson came striding into the room.
“Well hello there Jarrod. Maybe we should add a Barkley wing onto the hospital with all the business your family keeps sending our way. Heath is a very lucky man. The knife did not penetrate deeply enough to do any permanent damage but he did lose a lot of blood. Have you ever give blood to him in the past?” Dan asked.
Jarrod was relieved at the doctor’s words and replied, “Why yes, I have had to give blood to my brother on another occasion or two. There was no problem that I am aware of. As Brother Nick would say – let’s get to it.”
“Speaking of Nick – have you found him yet? He needs to have those casts checked next week. If he had followed instructions, we would have been able to put on something less cumbersome for him.”
“Dan – we don’t have him back with us yet. The kidnappers are playing some kind of cat and mouse game with me right now and I haven’t figured out what’s it’s all about yet. I just hope he’s alright.” Jarrod said disconsolately.
Nick was not alright. He was frantic. He saw his crutches on the other side of room and was trying to
maneuver himself close enough to grab them.
Finally his efforts were rewarded and he hauled himself up just as Susan
came hurrying into the room.
“Nick – what’s wrong? I heard you screaming. Can I help you?”
“Heath’s hurt. Have to go help him. That boy needs me now.” Nick tried to explain as he moved around her heading for the door.
“Nick – you must have been dreaming. Your brother’s not here so how could you possibly know he’s hurt. Come now. Let’s get you back to bed.” Susan cajoled gently seeing the obvious distress Nick was in.
“I don’t have time to explain it to you, Susan and even if I did, you probably wouldn’t believe me anyway. But I KNOW. That you can believe. I have to help him.” Nick replied frustrated at his slow progress.
Susan tried once again as she saw Jeff listening just outside the door. “Nick – do you even know where he is? How will you find him? Please be reasonable and think about what you are saying. You are in no condition to be searching the country side aimlessly.”
“You don’t understand. I won’t be aimless. I know I can find him. I have to. He’s hurt again. That boy gets into more trouble than you can imagine. I need to go to him. You just don’t understand.” Nick said again slowly shaking his head.
Jeff came in through the door and added his voice to his Susan’s. When he saw that Nick was not paying any attention to either of them, he put his hand out to restrain him. Nick still under the influence of the peyote was single minded in his determination that he was going to his brother. He leaned the crutches beside him and picked up Jeff and threw him across the room. Nobody was going to stop him now. He was going to Heath and that was that.
Jeff shook himself off, amazed at the strength in which he had been thrown. He saw Nick head out the door and he yelled at Susan to follow him. He quickly filled a needle with a sleeping potion and ran quickly after Nick. He could see that the stable door’s was open and slipped quietly inside. Susan was still talking in a calming voice to Nick trying to get him to reconsider. He watched in awe as Nick balanced himself while saddling the horse. Jeff hoped Susan would keep him occupied so he could sneak up behind him to give him this shot. He crept around until he was behind Nick. He waited until Nick was trying to bend down to cinch the saddle and then stuck the needle into his back.
Nick roared, “What the hell are you doing? I told you - I have to get to Heath. Get away from me or I’ll tear you apart with my bare hands. Nobody is going to stop me from leaving now. Do you hear me? NOBODY.”
Jeff ran back to the lodge and filled another needle. He couldn’t believe that Nick was still standing. Susan looked scared to death and wasn’t going to be much help. Jeff grabbed his gun too. If he didn’t get a chance to use this needle, then he would have to use the gun. He couldn’t let him leave. One way or the other, he had to stop him.
Jeff raced back to the stable where he saw Nick trying to mount the horse. He had pulled the horse over to the bales of straw and had climbed up with the help of his crutches. He threw himself over the top of the saddle and just managed to get his left leg over. He leaned over to grab the reins and almost fell off before he righted himself.
Jeff saw the determination written on his face even though he was visibly fighting the effects of the first needle. He fingered the gun in his hand with reluctance. He had never shot a man before and did not want Nick to be the first. He had to try to get this second needle into him. Maybe he should try to stall him and get his trust back at the same time.
“Hey Nick old bud. Wait up a minute. You’re never going to be able to do this on your own. If you’re dead set on doing this, give me a minute to saddle up the other horse and I’ll go with you. I can’t just let you go off on your own now could I Nick?”
“Fine – I don’t care if you want to come along but don’t try to stop me. You can catch up.” Nick replied as he turned the horse around to leave the stable. As he rode past Jeff, he felt a sting in his back but paid no attention to it. He wasn’t staying here another moment no matter what Jarrod thought was best. He had to get to his other brother. Heath needed him. It was the only thing that was crystal clear in his mind right now. Nothing else mattered.
While Jeff quickly saddled the other horse he told Susan that he hoped that the drugs would take effect soon and he wouldn’t have to use the gun. Susan was standing by the stable door watching Nick slowly make his way down the road. She was horrified by Jeff’s word’s.
“What do you mean – use the gun? You can’t possibly mean that you are going to shoot him if you can’t get him to turn around. Jeff – you can’t do that. I will not be party to murder. I mean it. It’s one thing to delay his return to the ranch but it’s quite another to kill this man.”
Jeff gave her an agonized look as he answered her. “I know Susan. I don’t want to – you have to know that. But we can’t let him leave here. I gave him two full needles of sleeping potion and he is still upright. I thought that would stop him in his tracks but he keeps going.” He said as he shook his head in wonderment.
“Jeff – what do you mean you gave him two needles? When? I only saw you give him one. Two is too much. That could kill him with all the other drugs we’ve been giving him. Please hurry and bring him back.” Susan fretted. She did not want any harm to come to Nick. She knew she was starting to care too much for this strong dark haired man but she couldn’t seem to help herself. There was just something about him that kept drawing her closer. She wished she had never got herself in this situation. What she wouldn’t give to be able to turn the clock back to when he first arrived at the hospital. Knowing him the way she did now, she would have treated him a lot differently. She was relieved when Jeff finally raced down the road after Nick.
Jarrod was just finished composing the message he wanted to send to his mother
when he saw Lara hurrying down the hallway.
“Jarrod – one of the nurses sent me a message about Heath. How is he?” Lara asked breathlessly.
“Dan thinks he’s going to be just fine. He’ll be laid up awhile and has lost a lot of blood but no internal damage was done. He tends to get bad fevers though when he has been injured in the past. I should warn you that they take a lot out of him. Not only physically but emotionally as well. Heath tends to keep his feelings close to his heart and only reveals himself in times of stress or injury.” Jarrod told Lara.
“I have to see him myself. Where have they put him?”
“Dan said they were just moving him into a room and someone would let me know shortly. With your connections, you will probably be able to find out more quickly than I.”
“Give me a moment then while I check into at the nursing station. The nurses always know before anyone else.” Lara said as she hurried down the hall. She was relieved at Jarrod’s words but desperately needed to see Heath. Her heart had plummeted to her toes when she read the note Lily had sent her. She had discussed her feelings for Heath with her friend who knew Lara would want to be there for him. After she received the information she sought, she returned to Jarrod and led the way to Heath’s room.
Lara gestured for Jarrod to enter the room before her as she wanted to confer with Dan first. After being reassured, she went directly to Heath’s bedside. She gently caressed his face. She was rewarded with a flicker of his eyelids and then those intense blue eyes were gazing into hers.
“Lara …. I need to speak to Jarrod.” Heath whispered hoarsely.
“Right here Little Brother. Just relax for now.” Jarrod spoke soothingly.
“No ….. need to tell you what I found out. Not gambling. Wasn’t sure at first but am now. Loan shark.”
“Loan shark? That is interesting. Hmmm … I could see how that could work. Don’t worry – I’ll have Adam look into it. You just rest and get back on your feet. Jerimiah came back with me and wants to guard your room for now. We won’t let anyone harm you further Little Brother.” Jarrod continued as he saw Heath try to sit up. “Now lie still and let us handle the rest. You may have given us a bargaining chip here. Adam will probably come by later to ask you some more questions. I’m going to leave you in the care of this lovely doctor for now and update Adam.” Jarrod made to leave but Heath called him back.
“Jarrod – have to know. What happened in Stockton?”
Jarrod explained what had happened at the telegraph office. As he reached into his pocket to show Heath the letter, he realized it was gone. His hand paused as he tried to think of the last time he had felt it there. With all the confusion when he saw Heath at the station, he had forgotten about the letter. He then remembered a man bumping into him just as he spotted Heath. He shared his conclusion with Heath and Lara. “I think that letter is on it’s way to Nick. For the life of me though, I can’t think what purpose it will serve. Maybe it’s just another red herring to throw us off track. But enough for now. You get some rest and I’ll see you later.” Jarrod said firmly and quickly left the room.
Heath looked up at Lara now and saw her worried expression. “No need to fret. Been hurt a lot worse before. Just a mite tired is all.” He said as his eyes grew heavy.
“Get some sleep love. I’ll be right here beside you.” Lara promised. She leaned over to place a kiss on his brow. She soon replaced her lips with her hand as she felt the heat starting to build in him. The doctor in her took over as she began the battle against the fever in him.
Susan was pacing back and forth on the porch not knowing what to do with
herself. She kept looking up the road
hoping to see Nick and Jeff returning.
There were only two horses so she was left to wait and worry on her
own. Finally, she saw Jeff riding
beside Nick holding him onto the horse.
She ran up to help him lift the unconscious Nick off the horse.
“He finally passed out. I couldn’t believe he made it as far as he did. I thought for sure I was gonna have to shoot him. Oh don’t worry – I wasn’t going to kill him. I figured if I shot him in the arm or something, he would have to stop. Thank God, I didn’t have to do that.”
Susan tenderly lifted Nick’s head onto her lap. She examined him closely as she was worried about the amount of drugs Jeff had given him. She saw his breathing was very shallow. All of a sudden he seemed to be struggling to get his breath. Horrified she yelled at Jeff.
“Hurry – we have to get him back into bed sitting up. I’ve seen this before in some of the drug addicts I’ve carried for. Jeff – move it or we’ll lose him.” Susan spoke urgently.
Part 11
Victoria felt a cold chill run down her spine as she heard
Silas open the front door. She
intuitively knew that this caller did not bring good news with him. She hurried down the stairs to find out if
she was correct. Silas handed her the
telegram which she scanned quickly. Oh
no she thought not Heath too. Fat lot
of good all their warnings to him did.
Her last words to him had been to be careful.
Nick was perceived to be the impulsive brother but he never seemed to get injured as frequently as Heath did. And Heath did not have his brother’s stamina. He never bounced back as quickly as Nick. Well to be fair, nobody recovered as fast as her middle son. Nevertheless, Victoria always thought it was due to the hardships he had endured as a child. It broke her heart when she realized how many times that boy had gone hungry or beaten as a child. Every time she thought about it, her anger at Tom would flare up again. His son should have never had to endure what he did and never would again if she had anything to say about it. He was not alone in this world anymore.
“Silas – Heath’s been hurt but according to Jarrod should be fine with some care. Please ask one of the hands to ready a buggy to take Audra and myself into town. We are heading back to San Francisco. I’ll just inform Audra and pack a bag. We shouldn’t be too long and hopefully, we’ll be able to make the afternoon train.” Victoria said as she turned to quickly head back up the stairs.
She went to Audra’s room where she knew her daughter was trying on dresses to wear to the barbecue at the Tanner’s. She hoped Audra would not become too upset at the news. She knew how close she was to Heath but there was no time for dilly dallying now if they were going to make that train.
“Audra dear, can you quickly pack a bag? Heath is in the hospital in San Francisco with a knife wound. Jarrod says he’ll be fine but I want to be there and make sure he gets the care he needs. And with this situation with Nick’s kidnapping, well, you know him dear, we just might have to steal all his pants to make sure he stays in bed.”
“Oh no Mother – not Heath! Are you sure he’s going to be all right? Did Jarrod say how it happened?”
“No I don’t know anything other than what I told you. Now we have to be quick if we are going to make that train, Audra. Please pack a bag quickly and I’ll meet you downstairs in ten minutes.”
Audra sat on the corner of her bed after her mother left the room. Her legs felt too shaky to stand just yet. First Nick – now Heath. She had been desperately trying very hard not to think about Nick. It had been scary enough when he had been in that coma in the hospital but now they didn’t even know where he was. She kept the terror at bay by not thinking about it at all but now it had all come rushing back. And Heath injured too. She had been counting on her other two brothers finding Nick and bringing home. She knew Jarrod would continue the search but he didn’t have the same dogged determination that Heath did. And how was Heath really? She knew Jarrod wouldn’t exactly lie but he would put everything in the best possible terms when communicating with them.
She forced herself to move as she knew her mother would leave without her if it meant missing that train. She automatically threw some clothes into her portmanteau. She glanced at the family portrait on her dresser and carefully wrapped it in one of her dresses. She wanted to take that with her to remind her that her family would all be together once again. It just had to be. She didn’t know how she could cope with any of the other alternatives.
Lara had ordered an aspirin mixture and was trying to coax it between Heath’s
lips. His fever had really started to
rise and with it, his awareness of his surroundings receded. After she had finally gotten the mixture
into him, she started the alcohol rub with Lily’s help. She watched with concern as he started to
toss and turn. The last thing he needed
was to break open those stitches.
Although she hated to do it, she sent the nurse to get the restraints to
hold him down.
Dan came back with Lily and took in the situation at once. He helped the two women put the restraints on his patient. He agreed with Lara’s treatment and offered to send more help if she required it.
“Thanks Dan but unless we really need it, I think Lily and I will be able to handle this situation. If there’s too many people in here, we’ll just bump into one another. I’ll keep your offer in mind if we need it though.” Lara replied and then poured her energies into keeping Heath’s fever down.
On one level, Heath knew exactly what was going on. He recognized the determination in Lara’s voice and knew he was in capable hands. He also knew he should try to get some rest while he could but he had this nagging worry about Nick. Worse than before. As his fever began to climb, he became more and more frustrated by the bonds that held him. He had to get to Nick. He just knew something was very wrong. He kept trying to tell Lara but she just shushed him and spoke soothingly. He couldn’t make out the words but he did understand the tone of quiet concern.
“Lara – please I have to find Nick. I know I can’t make you understand how I know but I know he’s in big trouble right now. He needs my help. I’ll be okay if you just let me up.” Heath begged.
“Heath – you are not alright. You have a bad fever on top of that knife wound you sustained. Now I know I don’t understand this bond thing that you and Nick have but you are in no condition to be out of this bed. That is one thing I do understand. You are just going to have to trust Jarrod to keep at it. Please relax darling. You are not helping matters here.”
Heath’s fever continued to rise and Lara listened in consternation to his ramblings. The restraints had reminded him too much of his stay in Carterson prison. He started to relive some of his more horrific moments there. Lara was stunned by these revelations. Her heart ached at the thought of what this poor man had gone through and at such a young age. She was mixing up another potion of aspirin when she heard a sound at the door. She looked over to see Victoria and Audra Barkley standing there.
‘I just knew he would be feverish. That son of mine doesn’t seem able to escape this experience whenever he gets injured. Let Audra and I give you a break Lara. It’s going to be a long night.” Victoria stated as she rushed into the room.
While Heath was fighting his battle with the fever at the hospital, Nick was battling to breathe at the lodge. Susan and Jeff had managed to get him back into bed in an upright position. Susan was busy barking orders at Jeff. She was just as determined as the ladies in San Francisco that she was going to save her patient.
She kept trying to pour the syrupy coffee she had Jeff prepare into Nick. Susan massaged his chest until her arms ached. She was finally rewarded when he seemed to fall into a more natural sleep. She put her ear down to his heart and lungs and listened intently. She sat down in the chair next to the bed with a sigh of relief.
‘Jeff – I think we did it. He seems to breathing easier. Thank God – I thought we were going to lose him there.” She said shakily.
“Yeah – I did too Susie.” Jeff replied with eyes narrowed. He knew for sure now that Susan felt something more than she should for this man. He was not just a patient to her. This complicated matters. He had to go into town and he was reluctant to leave her alone with Nick. But he had to leave. His employers stressed the importance of following their directions to the letter. Damn – what was he going to do now?
“I was supposed to go into town this afternoon and I’m already late. Why don’t we tie him down until I get back? That way if he wakes up all riled, you won’t have to deal with him on your own. It was hard enough with the two of us.” Jeff finally said.
“Tie him up! Oh Jeff – I don’t want to do that. Do you have to go now?”
“Yeah – I do. I told you I’m late as it is. Susan you have to know that it’s for the best. He’s stubborn enough to try it all over again when he wakes up. He’ll only hurt himself if he does. You have to realize that.” Jeff tried to use her concern for Nick as leverage.
It worked too. Susan conceded that Jeff was right. If Nick woke up in the same frame of mind that he was in earlier, there would be no stopping him. But all the same – to tie him up – well it just didn’t sit right with her somehow.
“Okay Jeff – you’re right. But I don’t want him tied down like a prisoner. He has to stay upright and you can’t tie his hands above his head. I have an idea that might work. Give me a hand tearing up some of these sheets.” Susan said determined that Nick would not be bound uncomfortably.
Thirty minutes later, she stepped back to view their handiwork. She had taken long strips from the torn up sheets and bound him to the bed around his chest and shoulders. He could still move his lower arms and hands this way. There was no need to bind his legs as the casts were cumbersome enough on their own. She knew all the same that he wouldn’t like it. Not one bit. But she had to save him from himself. There was no way he was able to ride off on his own.
She still couldn’t believe that he had actually mounted that horse and rode off. He had reminded her of a wounded knight heading off for battle. There he was shirtless, both his legs in a cast, wearing those huge pajama bottoms and barefoot to boot, thinking that he could just ride out on his own. He probably could have made it a ways too if the determined look on his face was any indication.
She checked his forehead again to make sure a fever wasn’t starting and noted with relief how cool he felt. Susan’s relief was short lived though as she saw him start to shiver. She felt the skin on his arm and found it cold to the touch. Oh no – she knew the signs. His internal heating system wasn’t working. It could be the effects of the drugs.
Nick was so cold. He had never felt this cold before. It felt like even his bones were
chilled. He started to shiver
uncontrollably and his teeth began to chatter.
He felt the weight of a blanket being put around him but it didn’t make
him feel any warmer. Someone was trying
to pour hot coffee in him again but it didn’t help either. He just kept getting colder and colder. He found he couldn’t move around much either
and vaguely wondered why that was. Cold
– so cold he thought. All of a sudden,
he felt this warm body pressed close to him.
Soft, warm hands were rubbing his arms and the friction was finally
penetrating the cold there. The warm
body now lay on top of him sharing it’s heat.
Soon Nick was wrapped within it’s warm cocoon.
The three women who had been tending Heath breathed a sigh
of relief when he finally quieted down.
There was a distinct drop in his temperature and they knew the crisis
was over. Victoria hugged Audra while
asking her to see if she could get some tea for the three of them.
“I certainly appreciate you being here, Mrs. Barkley. I was starting to get very worried when he seemed lost in the past for a spell there.” Lara sighed deeply.
“Well at least this wasn’t as bad as the last time especially without Nick here to help.” Victoria replied.
“Nick? I have to admit I don’t exactly see him as a sick room helper.”
“Oh you’d be surprised. Nick has probably set as many broken bones and tended as many gun shot / knife wounds as most doctors. But that isn’t the main reason that I’m grateful for his presence when Heath gets like this. Nick is the only one who can really reach him and pull him back to the present. There’s been a couple of times when Heath has been injured that I’m positive we would have lost him if not for Nick. I haven’t decided yet if it’s the sheer volume of his voice or the bond those two have but whatever it is, it works.” Victoria said wryly.
Lara looked at the woman before her and said shyly, “To be honest with you, I knew I cared about Heath but I wasn’t a hundred percent sure I loved him until tonight. Whether he was in the past or the present, he was most troubled by what happened to the others around him than what was being done to himself. He seems to have such a great depth of kindness in his soul.”
Victoria leaned forwarded and gently patted Lara’s hand. “Yes, dear, he is an easy man to love. I loved him in the beginning because he was Tom’s son but it didn’t take long before I found that I loved him for himself. But with his past, it won’t be always a smooth road you will travel. He has carried a too heavy burden at times in his young life. But if your love is strong enough, it won’t be an insurmountable obstacle.”
“You know - I feel in my heart that we’ll be just fine. I also found out tonight how stubborn he can be. We had to put the restraints on him because I was afraid he would burst open his wounds. Before you came in, he was bound and determined that he should be out there finding Nick. He’s sure Nick needs his help more than ever. He kept saying something’s wrong.”
Victoria bit her lip as she listened to Lara. Oh no she thought. I wonder what’s happened to Nick now. Oh please God – let him be all right. Please bring him home to us soon. Victoria pondered how much she should tell Lara.
“Lara – our family has recognized the bond between those two for quite some time now but it has been only very recently that we found out that it goes beyond what we can really explain. I’m struggling to find the right words to make you understand because you have to if you are going to be a part of Heath’s life. Those two sons of mine are very close. Nick and Heath can really sense when the other is in trouble. But with Nick, well, it’s something even stronger with Nick. He has .. uh experiences or visions I guess you could call them. He can definitely see and sometimes feel when something has happened to Heath. It’s been getting more potent over the past few months and Nick was very shook up by the whole experience. He hid it from all of us. I believe from what he finally did tell me that he thought if he tried to explain it to us, we would have concluded that he was losing his mind. It really spooked him. I know this sounds farfetched but it’s true. Now if Heath is worried about Nick, not just the kidnapping, then something else might have happened to my son. It’s so frustrating to only know so little.”
“Heath has discussed this with me before but he didn’t go into too much detail. I had told him that Nick had a couple of real restless nights just before he was kidnapped because of bad dreams. He said he needed to know if I knew exactly what Nick was dreaming about. He told me a little bit about Nick’s gift as he called it at that time. I was sorry I couldn’t really tell him very much other than the fact that Nick was disturbed by them and had developed an aversion to needles.” Lara explained.
Victoria was too mad to reply. Again! He did it AGAIN. She just couldn’t believe her ears. She had thought that after that last experience he would have learned to share his dreams. Victoria had made it perfectly clear to him how she felt about being excluded from his suffering. And what does he do? He keeps trying to protect everyone but himself. Why couldn’t he confide in the family? He even told that friend of Silas’s before he told anyone else. Sally May! Of course, why didn’t she think of that sooner?
“Lara – please tell Audra I’ve gone to Jarrod’s but I’ll be back shortly. Oh – I need to send a wire. Can I ask you to get her to send it also? Sorry I can’t explain but I have leave right now.’ she said as she hastily scribbled the wire she wanted sent. Before Lara even had a chance to reply, she was gone.
Part 12
Jarrod and Adam looked up from the papers they were
studying to see Victoria rushing in.
Jarrod was alarmed at the hectic color in her face. He was worried that Heath had taken a turn
for the worse.
“Mother – how is Heath?” he asked quickly. He had a quick spurt of guilt on how he had left the hospital so quickly without going back to check on him.
“Heath? Oh – he’s doing just fine now. He had a fever but between Lara, Audra and myself, I think we got it under control. I had an idea come to me when talking to Lara and couldn’t wait to share it with you. Remember Silas’s friends, Sally May, the one who was trying to help Nick with his gift. Well, I sent a wire to Silas asking if he could bring her here. I thought that if she had the same gift as Nick maybe, just maybe, she could use it to help us locate Nick.” She finished breathlessly.
Adam frowned in dismay as he said, “Mrs. Barkley, do you really think that this woman could really find Nick? Do you really want to rely on this hocus pocus stuff when we could be putting our energies into a more practical approach.”
“Let me tell you something Adam. I would try anything and I mean ANYTHING if there was the slightest chance that it would get my son back where he belongs. I don’t know if Sally May can help us or not but I am not going to overlook this possibility due to my own ignorance on the subject at hand here. If there’s one thing that I’ve learned in my lifetime, it’s that some things just cannot be explained. We also may be running out of time. Lara told me that Heath was frantic to find Nick before he finally succumbed to the fever. She said he kept saying something was very wrong. Knowing my son as I do, I wouldn’t put it past him to make an escape attempt.” She finished with a worried look at Jarrod.
I wouldn’t put it past him either thought Jarrod. Nick wasn’t known for his over abundance of patience. And he certainly wasn’t lacking in the courage department either. An escape attempt was certainly a possibility. And like his mother, he knew Heath’s concerns shouldn’t be dismissed out of hand. Actually, he had been having the same disquieting feelings all day himself. He had pushed them aside to concentrate on gathering evidence against Clive. Now, however, they weren’t as easily ignored.
“Well I must say Mother that I for one am willing to explore every avenue possible. Adam, I fully appreciate your skepticism. If I hadn’t experienced some of those unexplained situations mother was talking about, I would feel the same as you. But lovely lady, Adam is right also. Heath gave me vital information before I left the hospital. It seems our Mr. Harrington has been using the embezzled funds for a loan sharking operation.” Jarrod explained.
“Loan sharking, son? Is that how Heath got stabbed?” Victoria asked sharply.
“You know we never did get around to finding out the
circumstances behind the stabbing.
Heath was barely conscious the whole time I was at the hospital. Once I was sure he was in good hands, I
rushed back here to update Adam. I
believe we finally have some leverage now.
Adam’s people have known that there’s been someone new loaning money in
the wharf district but haven’t been able to find any leads on who is behind it.
If we follow the trail from both ends now, we should be able to accumulate
enough evidence to put Clive Harrington away for a very long time.”
“What about Nick? If you arrest Mr. Harrington, how are we going to get Nick back safely?” she fretted.
“Don’t worry Mother. We have a plan. We will have Clive exactly where we want him and he will fully cooperate with us.” Jarrod soothed.
Clive Harrington was not in a very cooperative mood at the moment. He was furious at his underling for the
action he took against Heath Barkley.
“You fool. Why did you have to go and stab him? He was only digging and didn’t know anything for sure until you warned him to back off. You don’t know these Barkley’s. Jarrod especially will never give up now. I’ve been very careful not to have a trail that led to me and in one careless moment, you’ve ruined everything.” Clive berated the man before him.
The man hung his head and kept his silence hoping Clive would calm down. He thought he had done the right thing. After all, Clive said to keep an eye on Barkley. As soon as he knew that Barkley was barking up the right tree, he figured he should try to stop him. The gun shot and pain in his chest seemed to happen at once. He looked in disbelief as Clive holstered his gun.
“It’s your fault, you know. I never leave any loose ends. Your actions made you a liability that I cannot risk.” Clive drawled to the already dead man. Pity, he thought, he was such an eager employee. Oh well, he must hurry is he was going to keep his appointment with Jeff.
Clive rushed to meet Jeff just outside of town. He couldn’t afford to be seen with him
now. He breathed a sigh of relief when
he saw the young man waiting at the appointed meeting place.
“I haven’t got much time. Just give me a quick update on the situation at the lodge.” Clive barked out.
“Well, sir, it was going real good until yesterday. I been giving Nick the peyote stuff you gave me and telling him all the things you told me to. He’s been real peaceful like with it too but yesterday, he kinda went crazy. He started yelling that his brother, Heath had been hurt and he had to help him. You wouldna believed how strong he was. Threw me clear across the room and him trying to balance on those casts and all. He made it to the stable and even managed to saddle a horse. Had me real worried. I stuck him with a sleeping potion but even that didn’t stop him none. Had to stick him again and ride out after him.”
“Are you telling me he escaped?” Clive asked worriedly.
Jeff hurriedly explained, “No – but he certainly tried. The sleeping potion finally took hold and I brought him back. We had a few bad hours there cause of it though. Susan was real worried I had overdosed him. See, he was having a real hard time breathing. But Susie, now, she worked real hard to ease him. When I left, he was sleeping like a baby. He’s gonna be just fine but we bound him to the bed just in case he woke up all riled up again. I wasn’t gonna leave her alone with him like that. Don’t know what got him all upset like that though."
Clive was startled at Jeff’s words. How on earth did Barkley know about his brother? Then he remembered what that old Kiowa had told him about that stuff. He said they used it in some kind of manhood ceremony and the young brave would have a vision. The shaman would then interpret this vision to determine his adult name and role in the tribe. Maybe that’s what happened to Barkley. Could be that he had a vision while on that stuff. It would be interesting to try some himself when he’d finally taken care of the Barkleys.
The Kiowa’s explanation on how they used it against their captured enemies was what had fascinated Clive though. That was the primary reason he had Jeff using it on Nick. He wanted Barkley’s mind altered to hate his brother. That would keep nosy lawyer busy and not have time to be poking around in his affairs. He’d have to get Jeff to speed up the process though as time was running out.
“Now listen closely. I want you to do two doses a day now but before you do, make sure Barkley reads this letter from his dear brother. Here’s what I want you to say ……… “
Heath woke up to see Lara dozing in the chair beside his bed. She was thoroughly disheveled but he had never seen a prettier sight. He wondered if this time things would work
out. He’d been in love a time or two
but never quite like this. In the past, something always seemed to come between him
and his lady love.
He wanted to be married and share a partnership with a woman he loved. He wanted children. He yearned to be part of what he never had as a child – a family. This dream had never been as strong as it was with Lara. He could almost picture in his mind what their life could be. Could be if only nothing stood in the way this time. He’d been disappointed too many times in his life to be confident in their love. He knew only too well how far you could fall when you were disillusioned on that score. It was almost comical how Nick and him never seemed destined to get the girl.
Nick! How could he have forgotten about Nick? He couldn’t really remember what he told Jarrod. He hoped that he had been able to use the information about Harrington.
“Lara “ Heath said softly. “Lara – is Jarrod around?” he continued when he saw her eyes open.
“Heath, darling, how are you feeling?”
“Fine – just a mite sore is all. Lara – it’s very important that I talk to Jarrod. Nick is in real big trouble right now and I have to find out if there’s been any progress.”
“He peeked in a little while ago and said he be back shortly. I think he took your friend Jerimiah back to his house. The poor man sat on a chair in the hallway all night. He should be right back. Just relax until then.” Lara soothed.
“Jerimiah – that’s right. I though I saw him come off the train with Jarrod. The world was a bit fuzzy at the time though and I wasn’t sure if I really saw him or not. Kinda hard to miss though, isn’t he?” Heath teased.
“I wouldn’t argue with you there. He has to be the largest man I have ever seen. I felt very secure with him out there. There’s no way anyone would get through him to harm you again.”
“Must be here to help find Nick. Felt powerful guilty that Nick got hurt cause of him. I tried to tell him that it weren’t his fault but he don’t look at it like that. Might make him feel better if he was doing something to help here.”
“You had me worried last night, darling. That fever sure took hold of you. I’m glad your mother and Audra came. They told me that you often go through that kind of fever when you’ve been hurt in the past.”
“Mother? Audra? They here?” Heath looked around bewildered.
“Did I hear my name big brother?” Audra sang out gaily as she entered the room. “Nice to see you back with us again.”
“Good to see you too sis.
Do you know where Jarrod is? I
need to talk to him right as soon as possible.
How long have I been out?” Heath fretted.
“Now don’t you worry Heath. Jarrod will be here any minute now. You got stabbed yesterday morning so it hasn’t been that long.” Audra told him.
Heath tried to rise out of the bed and was immediately surrounded by the ladies who gently pushed him back down.
“And where do you think you are going Heath Barkley? Mother has already hidden your pants and left instructions that you are not to be provided with any. You know you are not well enough to be out of bed yet. Isn’t that right Lara?” Audra said firmly.
“She’s right love. I know you are anxious about Nick but you are not going to do him or anyone else any good if you leave here and collapse. You need to rest for at least another twenty-four hours. I would be happier if it was forty-eight but I have a feeling that you’d find a way out of here by that time anyway. So just relax dear.” Lara said as she leaned down to kiss his cheek. “Now that you are stable, I am going to clean up and visit some of my other patients. Don’t you give your sister a hard time now?”
“Lara – thanks for being here. Sure do appreciate it.” Heath gave her his lopsided grin.
Lara felt her heart stop briefly at that grin. She sure had it bad for this man. It had been a long night and finally the worry that she had held close let go. “Think nothing of it, darling. You get personalized service when you have a doctor for a girlfriend.”
As Lara left the room, Audra sat down and took Heath’s hand in hers. “She’s nice Heath. I really like her. I hope everything works out for the two of you. You deserve someone like her brother dear. Here’s Jarrod now so you can relax.”
“Brother Heath – good to see you’re finally awake. Your tip has sent us in the right direction little brother but I still have quite a few questions for you.” Jarrod said jovially.
Nick felt like he was floating on a cloud.
He was so calm and relaxed. It
took him a minute to remember where he was.
When he tried to move, he felt the bindings holding him down. What the ? he thought. Why I am strapped to the bed? He tried to concentrate on the last thing he
remembered. Everything was so
foggy. What had happened that they
bound him down like this?
Frustration overwhelmed him. “SUSAN! JEFF!” he bellowed. Maybe they could answer his questions. Where were they? “JEFF! SUSAN! Can one of you come here?”
As that pesky nurse walked into the room, he had a fleeting memory of an erotic dream he had about her. He must be losing it if he started having fantasies about that one he thought. Sure she was pretty and maybe she’d been a bit nicer to him since he left the hospital, but he just couldn’t think of her as anything but an obstacle in his way.
“Nick – Good morning. How are we feeling today?” she chirped cheerfully.
“Well, I don’t know how WE are feeling but I’M not too impressed with these bindings. What the hell is going on? What happened yesterday? I can’t remember anything.” He grumbled loudly.
Thank God, she thought. “Well, Nick to tell you the truth, I’m not too certain myself. I believe you had some kind of reaction to the medication. You were very violent at first and then you had trouble breathing. Jeff and I worked all afternoon to stabilize you. We bound you down so you wouldn’t hurt anyone especially yourself.”
“Did I hurt you?” he asked worriedly. He may not particularly like this pesky nurse but he sure didn’t want to hurt her.
‘No Nick – you didn’t hurt me but you did throw Jeff clear across the room. He probably has a few bruises today. He went into town to talk to your brother, Jarrod. We were concerned that maybe you should be back into the hospital.” Susan answered quickly.
Back to the hospital? Might not be a bad idea. At least he wouldn’t feel so isolated from the family. Heath would come and visit for sure. Heath – what was it about him that he couldn’t remember? He knew there was something but try as he might, he just couldn’t grasp it. Again, he wondered what was the matter with him. He just couldn’t seem to concentrate. He heard a horse come in the yard and held out a hope that Heath had finally come to fetch him home. He was greatly disappointed when he saw Jeff walk in by himself.
“Hi Jeff. I was just telling Nick that you had gone to see his brother, Jarrod to see if we could move him back to the hospital.” Susan cued Jeff.
“Well, now Nick, I did go see Jarrod but he wants you to stay put for now. He did write you a note though. Let me see, where did I put that? Oh here it is.” Jeff said as he handed Nick the letter Clive had given him.
Part 13
Nick looked wryly down at his arms and said, “Jeff – can
you release these bindings now? It’s
gonna be mighty hard to read this note if I can’t even open it.”
“Sorry Nick – forgot all about that. Just give us a minute, okay.” Jeff replied as he went to start untying the torn up bed sheets.
Susan jumped forward to lend a hand. In a matter of minutes, they had freed Nick. Susan pulled at Jeff’s arm to leave the room. She wanted to give Nick some privacy when he read his letter. Jeff still hesitated. He wanted to see Nick's reaction so he could gauge how hard to push him. Susan gave another tug and he reluctantly left the room.
Nick tore open the envelope and quickly read the note. What the hell was this? He thought. Is this all he wrote? What does he mean cooperate with my caretakers or my release could be endangered? Is he telling me to behave myself or he’ll keep me here until the casts have to come off? He read the few sentences over again. For my own good, my foot. He couldn’t believe it. All this time and all he wrote was three little sentences. If he didn’t know that it was definitely Jarrod’s handwriting and signature, he would have thought Jeff was playing a joke on him.
Nick was not a man given to feeling sorry for himself but he was getting pretty damn close to it right now. His bewildered eyes scanned the room as if the answer to his questions would be there. How could Jarrod brush him off this easily? He knew that him and Jarrod were not as close as they had once been but he never imagined Jarrod would ever treat him like this. Cut him off totally from everyone in the family and leave him with virtual strangers.
Maybe Jarrod was trying to punish him for not sharing his troubles with the family especially with him. Nick had stopped going to “Pappy” to discuss his problems when he realized that his brother and him had fundamental differences in their approach to life. He guessed it was always so but over the last couple of years, there were a few incidents that really brought the differences to light. But it didn’t mean he didn’t love Jarrod as much as before. For God sakes, he was his brother and that said it all as far as Nick was concerned. But when he really thought about it, that was the fundamental difference between them that bothered Nick. The family meant everything to Nick and he would protect anyone in it with his dying breath. Jarrod felt that doing what was right came before anything or anyone. Maybe he felt he was doing the right thing here. Yeah that had to be it. Jarrod wasn’t petty enough to do this because he was sulking.
But how could he think that this was the right thing to do? He must know that Nick would be going crazy here without at least having any communication with the family. He didn’t even say how Mother was doing. Nothing. Jarrod also had to know that he would be frantic for information about the ranch. Heath could handle most things but a lot of what had to be done was in Nick’s head. Heath! What was it about Heath that was bothering him? He shook his head in disgust at his lack of focus. Damn drugs! That’s it. I’m not letting them near me with anything else.
“JEFF – Can you come here a minute?” Nick bellowed.
“Sure thing Nick. What can I get you?”
“Is this it? Is this all he gave you? Did he say anything about my mother or the rest of the family?” Nick prodded.
Jeff smiled inwardly at the belligerent expression on Nick’s face. “Sorry Nick that’s all he gave me. Just scribbled it out while I was standing there. Told him you wanted to hear from him and all but he said he was real busy right now. He’s just finishing up a court case and then he’s making some kind of important announcement about running for some government office. Don’t know which one though and he didn’t say.”
“Government office? He said he wasn’t going to put his name in to run for the Senate until the end of the year. Why now? And what about my mother?” Nick barked at Jeff.
“Well now, I did ask as I knew you were concerned, Nick. He told me that your mother was recovering just fine and that all she needed was some peace and quiet with no worries. Oh yeah, he also told me that your brother, Heath was laid up for a bit when he got gored by a bull but he was already up and about now.” Jeff said slyly.
“Heath was hurt and out of commission? Are you sure he’s okay? Who was running the ranch? Those orchards gotta be tended right now or we won’t have a good harvest. What about branding? That should be started by now too. Jeff, I mean it, I gotta get outta here and NOW. I’ll pay you anything just to take me to Stockton.” Nick fired off quickly.
“Whoa now. I can’t answer all those questions. Your brother didn’t give me a whole lot of information. I asked about Heath cause I knew you’d be worried though. He said he was just fine. Had a few stitches was all and then he was up and about like nothing happened. He didn’t talk about the ranch at all. And Nick – much as I’d like to take you to Stockton – well, I just can’t do that. I told you that before. You aren’t in any shape to travel that far yet, not after yesterday anyway. Just relax. I know you must be going stir crazy here. How about we try to go out by the stream and see if we have any luck catching us a few fish?”
That did sound like a good idea but not as good as going back home. He was so frustrated by those damn legs of his. He was going to keep practicing on those crutches and if he had to, he’d walk all the way to the train station by himself. The trouble was that he didn’t really know exactly where they were. He’d have to try pumping Susan for information. She seemed more sympathetic than Jeff did. Maybe she’d let something slip and he could get his bearings. If not, he’d just have to take his chances and hope he’d hit a town sooner or later.
“Yeah, okay Jeff. Fishing sounds good.” Nick said sadly.
Victoria and Jerimiah waited patiently at Heath’s
bedside. She was hoping he would wake
up before she had to leave for the train station. She wanted to meet Silas and Sally May there herself. Audra had gone back to Jarrod’s to get some
much needed rest. Lara had assured them
that he was on the mend now and she would stay with him when the family
couldn’t. She had told Victoria that
she was used to catnapping when she could and wouldn’t leave the hospital until
Heath was back at Jarrod’s.
Victoria smiled inwardly as she remembered the tender scene she had walked in on earlier. Lara had fallen asleep with her head on Heath’s pillow. But Heath wasn’t asleep. He was lying quietly watching Lara with an adoring look in his eyes and a small smile of satisfaction on his lips. Their hands were intertwined as if they couldn’t bear to break the physical contact it gave them. Victoria had never seen him have that look of contentment before. Oh she had seen him happy before but underneath that happiness there always seemed to be a hint of desperation. It was as if he expected that whatever had made him happy would not last. She prayed that this time her son would not be disappointed and finally found the peace in his soul that he deserved.
Lost in her thoughts, Victoria didn’t notice that the object of her prayers was now looking fondly at her. Heath was relieved to see the woman he called Mother sitting there with a smile on her face. He had been so worried about her. The last couple of months had been very hard on all of them and she had looked so fragile recently. Now she seemed to have regained her strength and determination. Heath felt a warmth in his soul as he watched her.
Victoria had a very special place in his heart. He still felt humbled by the acceptance and love that she bestowed on him. After all the years of people treating him like dirt because of who he was, she was the one person he figured had more than enough reason to hate him. She didn’t and never had. He thought back to the first real conversation they had had. He was trying to apologize for existing and she had sharply cut him off. She had told him that he had nothing to apologize for. That honor belonged to his father and not to get angry but probably his mother as well. He was the innocent victim in this situation and that no child should be held accountable for it’s parent’s actions. Nobody had ever said anything like that to him before.
He still had trouble believing his good fortune. He was starting to feel like he was part of a real family. And what a family it was. Victoria treated him fairly like all her other children and called him son. With Jarrod, he had a father and brother rolled into one. Audra was the sister he had always dreamed of having. And Nick, well with Nick, he had a brother and a best friend. The bond between them was so strong that it sometimes scared him. That was the reason, he had been so patient with Nick a few months back when he had been pulling away from Heath. He understood why Nick had been so uneasy. But he was sure glad that they had mended their fences. Now all they had to do was get Nick back.
Heath still was unsettled by the feeling that Nick was in trouble. He couldn’t wait to leave the hospital. He had to find his brother soon. Jarrod had been by to tell him their progress and ask some more questions. He hoped that he had helped him out some. The investigation was going way too slowly for him. He was angry at himself for getting hurt. He should be out there following that Harrington character. His thoughts were interrupted when Victoria noticed that he was awake.
“Heath, sweetheart, I’m glad you’re awake. I have to leave in a few minutes to go to the train station to meet Silas and Sally May.” Victoria said. She proceeded to tell him about her theory concerning Sally May and Nick.
“Well now Mother, I can’t say as I understand much about this “gift” the two of them have. But I’m all for anything that might help us find Nick.” Heath replied to the unspoken question in her eyes. “I know Nick felt mighty relieved after talking to Sally May. Had a lot of respect for her.”
“As for you son, Lara told me that if you behaved yourself today, she would let you come home tomorrow morning. I’ll try to come by later today but first I have to spend some time with Sally May. Audra will be by later after she gets some rest as will Jerimiah and Jarrod.”
“You all don’t have to babysit me you know. I’ll be just fine now, ya hear. Jerimiah, you should get some rest too. I seem to recall you being around a whole lot.” Heath said.
“It’s no trouble at all Mr. Heath. Been taking naps as I need them. I’d feel better watching out so that varmint that did this to you doesn’t try again.”
“Don’t think there’s any cause for worry there, Jerimiah. That fellow was just trying to give me a warning is all. If he had been serious about killing me, I expect he could’ve tried before the train station. Just rest easy about that.” Heath reasoned.
“Won’t hurt none to make sure though. I’ll just stay out in the hall and won’t bother you none, Mr. Heath.”
Heath looked to Victoria who nodded back at him to agree. He saw that Jerimiah needed to feel useful. Well, if it would help Jerimiah then he reckoned that he could live with it. He nodded his agreement back to them.
Jeff had gotten Nick settled at the stream with his back resting against a
tree. Nick couldn’t believe how tired
he was after making this small excursion.
He was disgusted at how weak he was.
All this laying about in bed was draining his strength. He needed to be up and about if he was ever
to get his stamina back. How the hell
was he going to get out of here, if he couldn’t even make it the hundred yards
or so to the stream without being exhausted?
It sure felt good to be outdoors though. He wasn’t a man that was used to being cooped up inside and he had been laid up longer that he had ever been before. He closed his eyes and breathed in deeply as he let the fresh air roll over him. He couldn’t understand how men like Jarrod could exist in those closed in offices all day. Nick was a man born to the outdoors and felt his spirits lift as he opened his eyes and looked around him.
Looked like a good place to fish he thought. He could see movement in the water and couldn’t wait to put his line in. He waited impatiently for Jeff to come back with the fishing gear. It was going to be a mighty hot day and he knew the fish wouldn’t bite much in another hour or two. They stayed at the bottom of the water until the sun cooled down again. Maybe they could come back this evening. Nick was already starting to sweat and reached for the canteen Jeff had left beside him. Mmmm – mighty fine lemonade. It sure hit the spot. He didn’t see Jeff’s sly smile as he watched Nick drink from the peyote laden canteen.
Part 14
Victoria and Jerimiah simultaneously breathed a sigh of
relief when they saw the train finally pull into the station. The train was over two hours late and it had
been a long hot wait. Victoria started
walking briskly towards the Barkley rail car when she saw Silas and Sally May
disembark.
Victoria smiled as she said, “Sally May – I hope your trip was not too tedious with this long delay. I must thank you for coming so promptly.”
“Oh Miz Barkley – the trip was just wonderful. I ain’t never been on a train before and to ride in your private car like that, why I would’ve been just fine in a regular car. You didn’t have to send it just for Sally May like that.”
“Sally May – please call me Victoria. And yes, we did have to send it for you. You are doing us a great favor by coming here in the first place. The least we could do was see that you arrived comfortably. Now let’s get you to Jarrod’s home and have some refreshment before we delve into the reason I asked you here.”
“Miz Barkley – I mean Victoria – I done already know why you brung me here. I don’t knows if I can help or not but I’ll surely try. That young man of yours sure done made an impression on old Sally May. I felt just awful at what he had to go through but I knew he had the inner strength to survive. Yes, ma’am that’s one fine man you done raised there.”
Victoria smiled as continued to exchange pleasantries with Sally May on the way to Jarrod’s. She thought now if we can only get that fine young man home. She agreed with Sally May’s assessment that Nick had a strong core of inner strength. But she also knew that although he had survived the last ordeal seemingly intact, there was only so much a body could take. Poor Nick would be thoroughly frustrated at the limitations those casts would put upon him. That middle son of hers was a man of action and did not take well to any confinement, never mind, one not of his own choosing. She didn’t know what she was more worried about – the actions the kidnapper might take or what Nick might do.
Victoria had every right to be worried.
Nick had finished the canteen of spiked lemonade and was trying very
hard just to hold onto the fishing rod.
He could hear Jeff quietly talking to him but he couldn’t really make
out the words he was saying. Once in a
while, he recognized Jarrod’s name but every time he heard it, he would feel an
overwhelming surge of anger towards his brother.
He looked over beside him and saw Heath coming down the bank of the stream. His heart leapt at the sight and thought that he was finally going home. Heath sat down beside him and pulled up a blade of grass to chew on.
“Well now, here you are sitting and fishing while I’m doing all the work back at the ranch. Must be right nice to be a gentlemen rancher and all.” Heath drawled.
“Heath – it’s about time boy. Take me home. I’ve been trying to get Jarrod to let Jeff take me back to the ranch but he keeps ignoring me and nobody around here will listen to me. Let’s go right now. Come on – help me up. I just want to go home, Heath.” Nick answered as he reached out to his brother. His hand floated through the body next to him before it disappeared.
Nick’s spirits were crushed. He shook his head as if to clear it. Heath wasn’t there. He really wasn’t there. He couldn’t believe it had happened once again. It had seemed so real this time. The weight of the depression he had been fighting settled like a large stone on his chest. His shoulders slumped as he lowered his head dejected.
Jeff watched Nick’s interaction with his imaginary brother. He was starting to feel sorry for him but knew his employer wasn’t someone you could double cross and get away with it. He kept up the steady stream of conversation making sure to make numerous references to Jarrod’s ill treatment of his brother.
Back in San Francisco, the people gathered at Jarrod’s home were just finishing
their luncheon when there was a knock at the door. Victoria looked quickly at her son who raised an eyebrow to let
her know he had no idea who could be there.
Jarrod rose and swiftly made his way to the door before Maria could
answer it.
A delivery boy from the telegraph station was there with a message for Jarrod. He generously tipped the boy and hurried back into the dining room to read the telegram. He scanned the contents and sat down heavily in his chair. He looked up to see the unspoken question in his mother’s eyes.
“I do believe this charade will end soon one way or the other. I’m afraid he’s on to us, Mother. I can only conclude from this telegram that Clive must be making plans to leave the country and time is running out. I’ll read it to you.” Jarrod said
Barkley, It’s time for this game to reach a conclusion. You will make a visit to your mines in Mexico and deliver $50,000 in gold to Santo Tomas in five days time. You will be contacted there. Do not be late or you will never see your brother again.
Adam had hurried over to Jarrod’s side as he had begun reading. He laid his hand on his friend’s shoulder and said, “Jarrod, that’s a very good possibility but there could be another plot afoot here. This might be a ruse to get you out of the way permanently. Mexico is a perfect place to set up an ambush and blame it on some bandits there. And it would be very difficult to find evidence to prosecute Clive for the crime.”
“You could be right Adam but what if he’s running scared and wants to leave the country before we gather enough evidence to convict him of embezzlement and kidnapping.” Jarrod countered quickly.
“My instinct tells me that his operation here is too profitable to give up without a fight. He’s obviously a greedy fellow and has been very cagey up to date. Right now – we simply do not have enough evidence to bring him in and he knows it. He doesn’t know about me so I’m thinking that he figures if he gets rid of you then the trail gets cold again.”
“But what if……..” Jarrod paused as he saw the look on his mother’s face. He realized this debate should not be taking place in front of her. He didn’t want her to reach the same conclusion he had. Either way Nick had now become a liability. As he saw it, they only had five days, at the most, left to find his brother. He didn’t know how he knew it but he was certain Nick was still alive. He had to distract his mother so Adam and himself could concentrate on formulating a plan of action.
He continued as if completing his original thought. “But what if Sally May could help us locate Nick? Mother – what did you have in mind?”
Victoria narrowed her eyes wondering at her son’s motive. She had a feeling that he had changed the subject intentionally. Well, she was not going to be left out of this discussion. But he did have a point. What did she have in mind? She really didn’t know what she wanted Sally May to do as she didn’t know exactly what she could do. She raised her eyebrow back to him to let him know she was on to his game and this conversation wasn’t finished.
“To be honest son, I don’t know. Sally May – when I asked you to come to help us, I was hoping that you could give us some information regarding Nick’s “gift” and how we might use it to help him. You see, he hasn’t been very forthcoming regarding how his ‘gift’ actually works.” Victoria looked imploringly at Sally May.
“Well, Miz Barkley,” Sally May stopped at her look, “I mean Victoria, your son can sense and see things on a different …… I don’t know what to call it. In the bible, there’s some mention of a higher plain so I kinda look at it like that. There’s a whole lot out there around us that most people just can’t see or hear. Some of us can. My momma, now she was strong like Mr. Nick. When we were on the plantation, folks would come and ask her for help all the time. She even found missing children and such but like I said, her gift was more powerful than mine.”
Sally May stopped when she saw the sorrowful look on Mr. Nick’s mother’s face. “Miz Barkley, Victoria, I could tries. But I don’t want you to get your hopes up and all. Could I have something of Mr. Nick’s and a quiet room?”
“What do you mean – something of Nick’s? Something from his room? Or a piece of his clothing?” Jarrod asked.
“Well now, I was thinking that maybe if you had those black gloves he always wears that would be probably the best bet. They are something he wears often and would have some of his essence on it.”
Adam turned his back as he rolled his eyes. Why where they wasting time on this nonsense when they had so little time? His essence? He could understand a mother wanting to try every option available but Jarrod? Where was his logical, level headed friend that he knew so well? He couldn’t believe that he was actually buying into this absurdity. He snorted with impatience and saw Jarrod give him a warning look.
“There’s a dresser in a spare room that he keeps some of his belongings. Mother – why don’t you take Sally May up there and see if you can find something suitable for her. That room would also be ideal for the quiet room she requested.” Jarrod replied shooting Adam another stern look.
Victoria said, “Sally May – that sounds like an excellent idea. If you don’t mind coming with me, we will get started right away.”
Sally May nodded her agreement and rose to follow Victoria from the room. When they had reached the room, Victoria went straight for the dresser and started opening the drawers. She was frustrated until she came to the last one. Underneath a spare saddlebag, she found what she was looking for.
“Sally May – can I ask what you are going to do?” Victoria asked curiously.
“What I am going to try to do, ma’am. When my momma was helping to locate a child, she would ask for something special that the child owned or wore. She would then concentrate real hard on the child and sometimes, she could see where they were. Sometimes she could even talk with them some. I never tried it before so I don’t know if I can do it or not. But your Mr. Nick could if he really tried so maybe he’ll be able to help me some.” Sally May tried to explain.
Victoria hesitated in the doorway. She knew that Sally May wanted her privacy when she tried this but she wanted to see what, if anything, happened. After they got Nick back, she was going to sit down with Sally May and see if she could help her understand what this ‘gift’ her son had was all about. If she couldn’t get it directly from the horse’s mouth, then she would find out another way. Nick had gone too long without any support from the family and that was going to stop. She was going to make him realize that he was not alone in this if it was the last thing she did. She saw that Sally May just sat there patiently waiting for Victoria to leave. She sighed deeply and left the room, closing the door quietly behind her.
She squared her shoulders. If she couldn’t stay with Sally May, then she was going to be part of the discussion that Jarrod and Adam were having. She wanted to have their plan of action resolved before Victoria went to the hospital to relieve Audra at Heath’s bedside.
Sally May sat in a rocking chair by the window. She gently caressed the black leather gloves that Victoria had placed in her hands. She began to hum softly while she rocked back and forth. She concentrated on the man she had come to help. She put her hand in one of the gloves, still rubbing the worn leather. Slowly she put herself into a trance and relaxed completely.
“Mr. Nick” she said softly, “Mr. Nick – can you hear me? It’s your friend Sally May. Where you be Mr. Nick? Can you answer me? Come now Mr. Nick – open yourself up son. You know how to do it.” Sally May continued to croon these words over and over again hoping Nick would hear her.
Nick was alone by the stream as Jeff had gone back to the lodge to take their
unused supplies back. He had that
floating feeling back again. What was
the matter with him? He couldn’t remember
Jeff or Susan giving him any drugs. He
was afraid he was starting to lose his mind.
Maybe all those drugs damaged his brain or something. He kept seeing things that weren’t there and
all the colors from the scenery around him kept jumping out at him. He felt a shiver of fear. He didn’t want to end up like those mindless
idiots he had seen in those insane asylums like that judge had put his mother
in.
He felt a wave of panic when he started to hear Sally May’s voice. Maybe he’d already gone around the bend. He tried to shut it out but it kept getting louder and louder. He put his hands over his ears but that didn’t help. If anything, that was worse.
Oh God – help me, he thought. The panic finally overtook him in his drugged state. He tried to get up to get away thinking that he could outrun the voice haunting him. He used the tree behind him to pull himself upright. He tottered on his casts and tried to steady himself. When he felt he had his balance back, he took a couple of tentative steps only to lose his balance again. He banged his head against a tree branch and fell down. Just before he lost consciousness, he called out to Sally May.
Part 15
Sally May slowly came out of the trance. She was deeply troubled. Although she had seen and heard Nick, she
knew something was not right with him.
His mind seemed jumbled and confused not like the man she had gotten to
know. She had to think about it some
before she told Miz Barkley what she had seen.
Downstairs the discussion regarding their plan of action was still going in circles. Jarrod felt he should at least make an attempt to go to the Barkley mine in Mexico. Adam was vehemently opposed to this course of action. Jarrod wanted to lay a trap for Clive and bring him back for prosecution. Adam didn't think Clive would even leave the city so it would be a useless waste of manpower. He thought Clive would just arrange for an ambush along the way and make sure he had an alibi so he would not be implicated.
Victoria had sat listening to the men argue back and forth without comment. She wanted Nick rescued but not at the expense of Jarrod’s life. She could lose both of them. It was unthinkable. What could they do to ensure both of their safety? Suddenly, an idea came to her.
“Son, what if you make Clive think that you are heading to Mexico? We could set up an ambush of our own, couldn’t we? Do we have someone at the mines we can trust to make that delivery if it’s not a trap?” Victoria spoke quickly.
“Lovely lady, I do believe you have a possible solution to our dilemma. As always, your clear thinking has won the day. Adam – I can make arrangements from here to have the gold ready on our instructions. If we plan a route prior to my leaving, we could have some men in place to ensure I can safely reach a prearranged destination and then stop anyone from following me as I return home. What do you think?” Jarrod said as he pondered the elements of this plan.
“Wait a minute – I have a better idea. It’s time to bring in the troops so to speak. I believe we have a fellow on the force who is very similar in appearance to yourself. If we sneak him in here, then dress him in your clothes, he could leave as if he was you. We would have the men in place to protect him and apprehend Clive’s men if my theory is correct. That way we could concentrate on finding Nick here. I have Justin and Beth trailing Clive right now. As a matter of fact, I should have received a report from them by now. I should check on that and make arrangements for the rest of our plan.”
Victoria shot a grateful look at Adam. She liked his plan as it meant Jarrod would not be endangering himself. She saw that Jarrod was still torn though. She knew he didn’t want to do anything that might be a catalyst that would bring harm down on his brother’s head.
“Jarrod – Adam’s plan is sound. When Nick is brought home, I don’t think you should be in Mexico. After what he had been through, he is going to need his brother here.” Victoria said playing on Jarrod’s concern and love he had for his brother.
Jarrod knew exactly what his mother was doing. She was right though as usual. He would be more effective here than traipsing off to Mexico. He turned his rueful blue eyes towards her and said, “Mother dear, your superior wisdom shall prevail here. Adam – go ahead and make the arrangements as you see fit. I am going to go to the telegraph office to start proceedings at the mine. I also want to stop by the hospital to bring Heath up to date.”
Victoria shot a grateful look at her oldest son. She knew Heath was chomping at the bit to get back into action and find his other brother. This might relieve his mind that the net was closing in on Clive. Heath was also a very good strategist. He might have a few good suggestions that would aid them. She looked up to see Sally May standing hesitantly in the doorway. Victoria immediately rose and led her into the room.
Jeff was casually strolling back down to the stream when he saw Nick lying on the ground. He hurried over to him and saw the blood on his head. He pulled his handkerchief from his pocket and hurried down to the stream to wet it. He sat down beside Nick and began to wipe the blood away. He was relieved to see that it wasn’t a deep gash. Looked like he tried to get up and banged his head on the tree. He thought he better not rouse him until he had Susan to help him.
With this thought in mind, he ran back to the lodge. “Susan, come quickly. Nick’s fallen and hit his head. I need your help.”
Susan ran out of Nick’s room. She had been giving it a thorough cleaning while the men were out. “Jeff – is he okay? Why did you leave him there by himself?” Susan asked concerned.
“Susie – he’ll be okay. I had to leave him so I could come get you. Quit nagging and come help me. I didn’t want to try to wake him up until I fetched you. Now come on.”
They quickly made their way back to where Nick still lay. Susan’s heart was beating so fast with fear for the man before her. She sat down and pulled his head onto her lap. She gently examined the wound. “I think you’re right Jeff. It doesn’t look too deep. But he is going to have quite a headache when he wakes up. Get me some water from the stream and let’s get him up.”
Jeff once again soaked his handkerchief and brought it back to Susan. She place the wet cloth on his head and lightly tapped his cheek. “Come now Nick. Let’s wake up shall we.” She said relieved when she saw his eyelids start to flicker.
Those hazel eyes stared up at her with a pain that seemed to go beyond a mere bump on the head. Susan felt an overwhelming urge to comfort him. “Nick – it’s alright. You must have tried to get up by yourself and hit your head. It doesn’t look too bad. Do you think you can help us get you back to the lodge?” she said as she ran her fingers through his wayward hair.
It took him a few moments to get his bearings. He saw that the pesky nurse was looking down on him with concern in her eyes. She was kinda pretty after all he thought. Those green eyes of hers looked beautiful when she was not spouting off about the rules and such. Then he remembered what prompted him to try to get up and leave. He started to panic again but then the he realized that the voice was now silent. He shuddered as he relived the experience.
Susan felt the shudders running through his body. She wondered if he banged his head harder than they had first thought. He still hadn’t acknowledged her either. “Nick – can you hear me?” When he still didn’t answer her, she darted a worried glance at Jeff.
Jeff knelt down beside them sharing Susan’s concern. “Hey there Nick. Let’s get you up and back to the lodge. You’ll be much more comfortable there.”
Nick sighed heavily. Back to the lodge. He didn’t want to go there. He wanted to go home. Their worry finally registered with him and he answered them. “Yeah, I’m okay. Just dazed there for a minute. Doc Merar always said I was lucky I had such a hard head.” He pushed himself upright and allowed them to help him to his feet.
Aided by Jeff and Susan, Nick was soon back in his bed. He impatiently endured Susan’s ministrations. When she held up two fingers, Nick knew the routine by heart. “You’re holding up two fingers. My name is Nick Barkley. I don’t know what day it is but I kinda lost track of that before I hit my head. I don’t have a concussion. I’ve banged my head enough times to know when I do.” He barked sharply. All he wanted was to be left alone.
Nick lay there with his head pounding. He was trying to figure out what had
happened at the stream but the drug was making his thought process
sluggish. He wished he was back at the
ranch. There he always knew what to
do. Even if there was a problem to be
solved, he usually could come up with a workable solution. He was in his element there and could rely
on his instinct. This situation was
beyond his usual reasoning process but he knew in his gut that something was
off kilter here. But what was it?
He grimaced as the pain in his head sharpened. He closed his eyes to block out the light and found some relief. He thought back to the voice he had heard by the stream. Sally May’s voice – he was sure of it. He still didn’t fully comprehend what this “gift” of his was all about. Sally May didn’t say anything about being able to contact someone or how to do it. He started to take deep breaths and concentrate the way she showed him. Nick tried to focus on Sally May. The ache in his head seemed to intensify with each breath he took. He started to see Sally May in Jarrod’s study then he felt a pinprick in his arm and it all started to fade into oblivion.
Susan stood holding the needle she had just injected. She had seen the pain Nick was in and couldn't stand to see him like that. Not when she had the means to alleviate it. She took a wet cloth and gently washed his face. She tenderly ran her fingers through his hair. She didn’t know what Jeff’s employer had in mind for this man but she vowed that she would not allow anyone to hurt him further.
Sally May was just starting to walk into the room when she stopped cold. She felt a fission of excitement dance up her spine. He was trying to contact her. She knew she had to relax and be open to his communication. She closed her eyes and let her mind wander aimlessly.
Jarrod noticed Sally May’s odd behavior. He was about to ask her if she was alright when he saw his mother indicate that she wanted everyone to keep quiet. Sally May looked like she had fallen asleep on her feet. He silently crept closer to her. Jarrod wanted to be able to catch her if she collapsed. It only took a few minutes but it felt like hours before he finally heard her whispered “Nick”. She put out one arm trying to balance herself.
Jarrod gently took her arm and placed it in the crook of his. Sally May opened her eyes to see the concern shining from those kind blue eyes of Jarrod’s. She patted his hand to reassure him that she was fine and walked over to the sofa to sit down. She took a deep breath trying to calm her racing heart.
Victoria asked gently, “Sally May dear, would you like a cup of tea or maybe something a bit stronger?”
Sally May looked gratefully at Victoria knowing that the family matriarch was trying to give her a moment to compose herself. “Thank you Miz Barkley …uh…Victoria, ma’am. I’d truly appreciate a glass of water – if it ain’t no bother ma’am.”
Jarrod quickly dispatched a glass of water into the lady’s hand. She took a few quick sips and looked at the anxious faces around her. “I done knew what I was gonna say when I come down those stairs. But after what just happened, I think I needs to know more bout what you think his actual circumstances are. It would be powerful helpful in my figuring.”
Jarrod quickly and concisely brought Sally May up to date. He explained that most of what he was telling her was guesswork and not fact.
But Sally May was nodding her head, “Makes some sense now. Your boy’s alive that’s for sure. I seen him near water sitting under a tree. But his mind was all ajumble. Didn’t seem like the same man that came to my home. Was having a hard time making sense of that. From what you just tole me though maybe it be the drugs that make him seem changed. He was trying to contact me when I walked into this room. Felt like he was there for one moment then it was gone. Could be the drugs makin it hard for him to concentrate like I done showed him.”
Victoria’s heart swelled with relief when Sally May said her son was alive. She knew that most people would shrug this off as nonsense but she knew deep in her soul that Sally May was right and Nick was still alive. She was troubled though by the mention of what the drugs might be doing to him. She decided she wouldn’t worry about that right now. It would be wiser to concentrate on getting him home. Once he was back with them, then she would direct her efforts towards getting him well again.
Jarrod’s thoughts were going in the same direction as his mother. His brother was alive. Now all they had to do was find him. He wondered if Sally May could give them more information. “Sally May – from what you saw, is it possible to determine his location?”
Sally May shook her head sadly and replied, “Mr. Jarrod – I wish I could tell you more but I didn’t see more than what I done already tole you. I just had a .. .. glimpse of him. Sally May couldn’t see anything more than a tree and some water.”
But Jarrod wasn’t considered a brilliant attorney for no reason. He knew that witnesses often saw more than they realized. They just had to be prompted correctly. He wasn’t ready to give up quite yet. He asked, “Did you recognize what type of tree it was?”
Sally May looked thoughtful for a moment. “I don’t know what it is called but it was big. It had pointy leaves. The bark was kinda white – gray color.”
“Hmmm … possibly sycamore. Now the water you saw – can you describe the color? Was the water moving or still? Did it look like a stream or a river or maybe the ocean?” Jarrod probed some more.
She paused again trying to recapture the picture in her head again. “The water looked a gray – blue …kinda dark you know. Didn’t seem to be moving fast, course I wasn’t really looking at the water that hard. I reckon it could be a stream. Didn’t seem real big now that I ponder on it though.”
“Thank you Sally May. You may have given us another lead. Mother – it’s been quite the trend in the last couple of years with the Nob Hill gentlemen to have hunting lodges built. The area they seem to prefer is about two hours north east of here. I went last year with Jonathan and remember large stands of sycamores. There was also some great fishing in a nearby stream. I need to find out if Harrington has built in this area and where it is. It would be the ideal location to hide someone but still close enough to town to communicate easily.” Jarrod said thoughtfully rubbing his chin.
“Jarrod, dear, wouldn’t Harry have that information? After all, they worked closely together for years, didn’t they?” Victoria offered.
“Yes Mother that was exactly what I was thinking. I’ll stop by to see him before I visit Heath. I believe we finally have the break we were looking for. If I’m going to meet Adam back here in time, I should leave immediately. Take heart Mother – we are going to have Nick back with us in no time.” Jarrod said jauntily as he left the room determined that he would do everything in his power to make that statement come true.
Part 16
Jeff led Susan into the kitchen after they were sure Nick
was sleeping. He had a feeling someone
was watching them. He’d gone outside to
look around and couldn’t find anyone.
But the feeling persisted. Maybe
Mr. Harrington had sent someone to make sure they were doing their job. Or maybe it was someone working for the
Barkley’s. Jeff didn’t know but he was
certain someone was out there.
“Susan – I want you to pack your bag and have it ready to go if need be.” Jeff instructed her.
“Pack my bag! Why Jeff? Are we taking Nick back to the city?”
He didn’t want to tell her his suspicions. He hadn’t told her very much and now was not the time. She might start panicking and that was the last thing he needed to deal with right now. He had played on the fact that she thought she owed him to get her to cooperate in the first place but he knew that he could only push her so far.
He thought back to the day when their bond had formed. They had lived in the same community and gone to the same school. Susie was a couple of years older than him so he didn’t really know her very well. One day when he was around twelve, he had been fishing at his favorite place. He had heard a piercing scream from nearby. He had dropped his fishing rod and ran towards the sound.
He saw a scruffy looking man holding Susan down on the ground. He was hitting her and tearing away at her clothing. Susan was struggling to get away. He didn’t know what to do. He was just a boy up against a man. He didn’t have any weapon at hand either. But he knew he couldn’t just walk away. He remembered looking around frantically for something he could use.
He picked up a large rock and quietly snuck around so the man’s back was to him. His arms had trembled as he picked up the rock and smashed it onto the top of the man’s head as hard as he could. The stranger immediately collapsed on top of Susan. Jeff had just stood there as Susan rolled the man off of her. He quickly looked away from the sight of her exposed flesh.
Susan covered herself as best she could before she checked to see if the man was dead or not. She told him that he was still breathing so they should get out of there as fast as possible. She stammered her thanks as the two of them ran as fast as they could. Later, they found out that the stranger had wandered into town and was killed in a bar room brawl. They never really spoke of that day but he knew it was always in the back of her mind.
She had helped him get that job at the hospital when he came to San Francisco looking for work. He had four brothers back home working the family farm. He wanted more than that. He didn’t want to work at the hospital either but it did put a roof over his head while he made his plans. He thought the money they would make on this could set him up real nice in some small town. He wanted to own a saloon where he could make money and socialize at the same time. This would have been his stake.
Well, at least he had asked for half the money up front. If they had to leave in a hurry, he would at least have that. All he had to do was get Susan to cooperate. He knew she was falling in love with Nick. It would be hard to persuade her to leave him. She didn’t realize the extent of the trouble they could be in though. He had to get her out of there before any harm came to her. They were not lovers but he did care for her like a sister.
“Susan – Nick’s family may be coming for him soon. I want to be ready to leave before we have to give them any explanations. They would ask questions that are better left unanswered for all our sakes. Nick would be furious with us if he ever found out the whole truth.” He answered hoping that she would just accept his explanation.
“Jeff – what is really going on here? Are we in trouble with the law?” she asked worried.
“Susie – the less you know – the better off you will be. Just pack and leave the worrying to me. You know I won’t let any harm come to you. There’s a hidey hole here in the lodge we can use if we have to. Nobody will hurt you. Please – just do as I ask.”
Susan nodded her agreement and went to her room to pack. She sat on the bed and thought about the man that lay sleeping in the other room. She wished with all her heart that the circumstances had been different. She knew in her heart that she would never meet another man that would make her pulse race or her heart swell with love the way this man did.
Meanwhile, Jarrod was having a hard time with his youngest brother. Heath was determined to leave the hospital
and join in the search for Nick. Jarrod
knew that Heath was in no shape to be riding for hours. He had found out that although Clive did not
have a hunting lodge of his own, he did use one owned by one of his friends on
a regular basis. Once Jarrod left here
and met up with Adam again, they would ride out using the directions Harry had
given them. It was a long shot but they
had to take it.
Heath had that stubborn look on his face. He was going to leave this hospital right now even if he had to wearing nothing but a sheet. He wondered what drugs the kidnappers were giving Nick and what the aftermath would be. After the war, he saw what happened to men that were addicted to morphine. It wasn’t a pretty sight. He vowed he would be there for his brother whatever happened.
Jarrod saw the emotions flickering through Heath’s expressive blue eyes. He felt the same way himself. He also knew that if it was him that was lying in that hospital bed, he would probably be reacting the same way. He had to think of solution that wouldn’t land them with two patients when they brought Nick home.
“Heath – how about if we get you back to the house to wait? Nick is going to need you rested and strong not worn out from a possible four or five hour ride. I know you could do it out of sheer stubbornness but would it be worth it? Mother would only have the two of you to look after when we returned. Nick is going to need all the help we can give him.” Jarrod said persuasively.
“I reckon you’re right big brother. I sure don’t want to put a heavier load on Mother than what she has to carry as it is. Don’t know if I can stand the waiting though. I’ll surely feel better when I can lay my eyes on him.” Heath looked sadly at his older brother.
Jarrod silently said a prayer of thanks that Heath was going to be reasonable. He retrieved the clothing that his mother had hidden at the nursing station and helped his brother dress. He left a message for Lara to come to the house when she woke from her nap. He helped Heath to the waiting buggy with Audra’s assistance. She had been unusually quiet. She had not said a word after he had told them about the newest developments.
He put his arm around her and said, “Don’t worry honey. We will all get through this somehow. I feel that we will find our brother soon. Take heart. The worst will be over soon."
Audra appreciated Jarrod’s gesture but she was desperately worried about Nick. She remembered a time when Jarrod was off to college. One of the hands had been badly injured and Dr. Meara had given him a pain killer for months before he was healed. When the doctor had stopped giving him the drugs, the man had gone crazy. She remembered Nick yelling at her to stay in the house while he and some of the men had tried to hold down the young man. She had watched from her bedroom window. It had been a horrifying scene and then the man had just collapsed on the ground. He had died. The doctor later said his heart had just given out from the strain. What if that happened to her big brother? She couldn’t bear thinking about it but she couldn’t seem to stop. The thought that it could happen to her Nick kept circling through her mind.
She usually tried to look on the bright side of life. Her natural optimism had gotten her through some pretty rough patches in the past. But this time, she felt dragged down, unable to push the weight off her heart. Audra started praying as she had never prayed before.
When they got back to Jarrod’s house, Heath insisted on settling in on the sofa in the study. He wanted to be able to contribute to the planning if nothing else. He argued that he could rest there if he needed to. Jarrod felt he would be better off having a real rest in his bed but knew that this was another concession he would have to make.
Jarrod saw that his mother and Sally May had been napping in their respective chairs until they came in the doorway of the study. Instantly alert at the sight of her youngest son moving slowly into the room, Victoria quickly ran over to the young man.
“Heath Barkley – are you well enough to be here? Where is Lara? Did she say you could come home?” Victoria inquired.
“Mother – I’m just fine. I need to be here. I know I wouldn’t get any rest at the hospital anyway. Not with worrying about what was happening here.” Heath tried to reassure her.
“Mother dear, I believe Heath is better off here under your protective eye than sneaking out of the hospital to follow us. We have come to an agreement. Brother Heath will stay here and try to get some rest while Adam and I go in search of Nick.” Jarrod said as he silently signaled his mother that this was the lesser of two evils.
“Very well, but I must insist that you at least lie down on the sofa. Audra, dear, could you please fetch a blanket and pillow for your brother.”
“Mr. Jarrod, sir, can I go with you? I would be a help, truly I would. I knows that Mr. Nick still be in those casts and I could carry him for you with no trouble.” Jerimiah asked anxiously. He wanted to help Mr. Nick all he could. After all, if it weren’t for him, Mr. Nick wouldn’t be in this situation in the first place.
He still couldn’t get over what that man had done for him. He knew if Nick had turned him over to those men, he would be dead right now. It would have been a very painful death too if their actions against Nick were anything to go by. Actually, this whole family amazed him. These people didn’t act like no other rich folks he had ever encountered. He had never really understood what the word honorable had meant before he had met them.
Jarrod looked over at the huge colored man who was wringing his hat nervously in his hands. He glanced down at Heath who gave him a quick nod. “Jerimiah – we certainly can use your help. We are most appreciative of your offer of assistance. Mother – has Adam returned yet?”
“Not that am aware of son. As you saw when you came in, Sally Mae and I were just resting our eyes. He might have not wanted to intrude. It’s possible that he is another part of the house out of courtesy for us.” Victoria answered.
“Then Heath, I am going to leave you to the ministrations of these lovely ladies while I go see if I can round up Adam.” Jarrod said as he quickly exited the room.
He went in search of Adam and found him sitting at the kitchen table partaking of some of Silas’s fine cooking. He sat down and brought Adam up to date. He asked if Adam had any further to add.
“Well now, my friend, I have your imposter coming round momentarily. We need to give the rest of my men a couple hours head start before he leaves. That will give them a chance to get into place. I haven’t heard from Justin or Beth though. That worries me as they are usually very prompt in sending in their reports. They knew I wanted to hear from them today.”
“I suppose it’s possible that Harrington was on to them and they are laying low for now. I hope there’s been no harm done to them.” Jarrod responded worriedly.
“I’m not really worried about the state of their health, Jarrod. Those two work together very well and can take care of themselves in most circumstances. What has crossed my mind, is the possibility that Harrington really headed to Mexico and they are following him. It could mean that they might not have had the chance to let anyone know what was going on.”
Jarrod mulled over this possibility. Maybe I should be the one going to Mexico after all. If Adam’s operatives were already trailing Clive, he would have back up in that quarter plus the other men he had put in place. While these thoughts were churning around in his mind, Silas came back into the room.
“Mr. Jarrod – there’s a young woman at the side door wanting to see Mr. Morgan. She says her name is Beth.”
“Silas – bring her in immediately please. She is helping us with locating Nick.” Jarrod said as he shot an inquiring glance at his friend.
The young woman who limped into the room looked worse for wear. Her appearance was bedraggled and dust covered.
“Beth, my dear. What has happened? Where Justin?” Adam asked with concern.
“Adam – Mr. Barkley, we followed Harrington to a rendezvous just outside the city. He met with a young man fitting the description you gave us as the orderly, Jeff. They talked for awhile, then Harrington gave the young man a package and rode back towards the city. Justin and I decided to follow the young man instead. We let him get a good head start on us before we trailed him. He’s staying in a hunting lodge about three hours north – east of the city. I think we found your brother Mr. Barkley.”
“Nick – you saw him?” Jarrod exclaimed.
“I believe so. When we arrived, the young man and a blond woman were helping a man with both legs in a cast inside the lodge. We waited to see if there was anyone else around but those two were all we could see. Justin thought it prudent that I come back for you to confirm his identity. Unfortunately, my horse threw a shoe about an hour after I left the lodge. I had to walk the rest of the way into the city. I felt I should come here at once so please forgive my appearance.” Beth apologized.
“Beth – if you weren’t married – I would give you the biggest kiss you had ever received. You look like an angel to me, dear lady. You couldn’t have brought us better or more timely information. Adam, can you show this wonderful lady the directions Harry gave me. I really must go tell my family this news. I will get Silas and Jerimiah to procure a wagon for Nick and hire horses for us. Beth – where should I tell them to wait for us?”
“Behind the train station would be perfect. It’s busy there in the first place so they won’t draw too much attention and it will be starting us in the right direction. Now if you don’t mind, Mr. Barkley – could I please use your facilities and wash up before we ride out again.”
“Forgive me Beth – in my excitement, I have been remiss in offering you the proper hospitality. I’ll send my sister, Audra in to assist you. She will probably be able to lend you some clothing also. Excuse me, please, I really must go inform my family of this latest development. We have been worried sick about my brother.”
Jarrod rushed from the kitchen back to the study. He felt as if he was flying. Nick – they were going to bring him home tonight. He just knew it in his bones.
Jarrod quickly blurted out the news to the occupants of the room. “Audra, honey, could you please direct Beth to the bathroom and get her some clean clothes. A bite to eat probably wouldn’t be amiss either. She has walked a long way to give us this information and will be leading us back to the lodge.”
“Certainly, Jarrod.” Audra answered quietly and moved to do Jarrod’s bidding.
“Mother – Audra doesn’t seem to exhibiting her usual exuberance over this wonderful news. She’s been awfully quiet all evening as a matter of fact. Is she feeling alright?” Jarrod inquired.
“Well we’ve all been under a considerable strain these past few weeks, dear. I believe it’s just all caught up with your sister. I’ll have a talk with her after you leave, son. When are you leaving, by the way?” Victoria asked.
“As soon as possible, Mother. Jerimiah - can you join Silas and Adam in the kitchen? Adam can then tell you and Silas the plan we have in mind at the same time. We’ll see you shortly.” Jarrod answered and further explained the plan they had in mind. “I know you want to have Nick back here but we might have to take him straight back to the hospital and then come back for you.”
“No – I insist you bring him here instead. I want him here where we can protect him. The doctor can come here if he needs one. But I want all my children under the same roof until Clive Harrington is under arrest.” Victoria said firmly.
“Very well, Mother. I must go change and prepare to leave. We want to be off within the hour.”
Heath desperately wanted to go with this older brother. He cursed his carelessness that allowed this injury to happen. He should have been more careful. Nick needed him and where was he? Flat on his back again. He hoped that Lara would get here soon. He needed her. He only hoped that Nick wouldn’t need her doctoring skills.
Their search party was soon on the trail with Beth in the lead. Jarrod was anxious to go faster but knew that they had to go at a pace where the wagon could keep up. The ever efficient Silas had packed the wagon with all the necessities they might need.
While they were riding, Beth was giving Adam a full report of what they had observed before Harrington had met with Jeff. They had heard the shot fired by Harrington but did not actually see him do it. They checked the body of man to see if he was still alive but he was dead. Justin had searched his clothing to see if there was anything that might incriminate Harrington but nothing was found. They were sure he did it but had no proof.
This news set Jarrod’s teeth on edge. So close. If they could have put him away on a murder charge, then maybe this nightmare might end. He just had to find evidence that linked Clive with the embezzlement, murder and not in the least, the kidnapping of his brother. The man had to make a mistake somewhere. They just had to find it. Wait a minute, maybe the meeting with Jeff would be enough if they found Nick at the lodge. He would assist the prosecutor himself if he had to but Jarrod vowed that Clive Harrington was going to the gallows for his crimes.
Beth raised her hand to indicate she wanted them to stop. She dismounted and tied her horse to a nearby tree. Jarrod gestured instructions for Jerimiah to pull the wagon in as close as he could get.
“Okay – now Justin should be right up at the next bend. The lodge is set back a bit with a large clearing around the front and the left side that leads to the stables. The back has been cleared to the stream. The right side is the best option as it has the cover of the trees. It’s your brother Mr. Barkley – how do you want to play this?” Beth whispered.
Jarrod looked beseechingly at Adam. What was their best option here? Storm in and hope for the best or give them the chance to give themselves up and hope that they would not harm Nick? Would they try to use his brother as a hostage if they had any warning?
Adam saw the question in his friend’s eyes. “Jarrod, I think the best approach would be to try and sneak in and surprise them. If there is only that orderly and the nurse there, they wouldn't stand a chance against us. But they might have weapons that they could use if they had the opportunity to get a hold of them.”
“Well then, let’s surprise them, shall we.” Jarrod responded.
The group moved as quietly as they could until they reached the trees in front of the lodge. Justin seemed to appear out of nowhere and gestured them back into the woods.
“Glad to see you could make it. What took you so long?” Justin said as he put his arm around Beth.
“Horse threw a shoe. I had a long walk before I could reach these gentlemen, dear. Has anyone else arrived since I left?” Beth replied as she leaned into her husband’s arms.
“No – no one. Just the nurse and the orderly in there as far as I can tell. What’s the plan?”
Adam quickly whispered what they had decided. They would all head for the right side of the house. Jarrod, Adam and Jerimiah would go in the front with Beth and Justin storming through the back door. Guns drawn, they hurried into place.
Inside, Jeff was getting jittery. Nick had woken up and was in a surly mood. Jeff had given him some coffee with a double dose of peyote and hoped that it would put him in a trance again. Suddenly, he heard the sound of a twig snapping just outside Nick’s window. He grabbed a syringe and stuck another dose of peyote into Nick before he had a chance to react.
“Hey Nick old buddy. I went into the city while you were sleeping. Your brother Jarrod is really mad this time. Said he was going to come out here and tell you to behave yourself once and for all. Also said that if I didn’t quit bothering him, he would find someone else to take care of you. Didn’t seem to be too concerned about you and what you wanted.” Jeff whispered into Nick’s ear.
He ran from the room in a panic. Jeff headed straight to Susan’s room and found her laying on her bed resting but thank God not asleep. “Come on Susie. Come with me quickly. I think someone’s outside. We’re going to hide until we find out who it is. Hurry.” He said urgently.
Susan was being pulled off the bed by Jeff before she really had a chance to take in what he was saying to her. He had grabbed her bag and was now stuffing into her arms as he looked for the device that would open the hidey hole in the wall. To her amazement, the wall slid silently open and Jeff pushed her in. He reached for his bag to bring in with him and pulled the lever that would close the wall.
“I may be over reacting here Susie but I’ve had the funny feeling that we were being watched for awhile now. Better to be safe than sorry. We’ll just wait it out for a spell and if no one comes in then I’ll go out and take a look around. Whatever happens, I want you to stay in here until you are sure it is safe. You hear me – you stay put no matter what happens. Now be as quiet as you can okay.” Jeff beseeched her.
“Jeff – are you sure this is the right thing to do? What if it’s just a deer or maybe our employer?” Susan queried.
“Shhhh – we don’t know that’s the problem. We’ll just have to wait and see. Now just keep quiet – please Susie.”
Outside, Jarrod berated himself when he stepped on that twig. The noise seemed to echo in the stillness of the night. They were finally in position and were just waiting for the signal from him before they moved any further. He said a silent prayer that this decision was the right one and finally nodded his head.
They now moved with energetic purpose. Jarrod tried the door and found it was unlocked. He pushed it open quietly and surveyed his surroundings at a glance. There was no one in the room. Jarrod motioned that he was going to go the room on the right and the others were to cover him.
He opened the door and his heart gladden as he saw his missing brother lying on the bed before him. He pushed his gun back into the holster and ran to his brother.
“Nick – Nick. Are you alright?” he asked urgently.
Nick opened his eyes and saw Jarrod staring down at him. All the anger that had been building up in him burst forth.
“Nice to see you counselor. Hope it wasn’t too much of an inconvenience for you to come and see me. Wouldn’t want to be a nuisance, now would I?” Nick drawled sarcastically at his stunned brother.
“Nick – I got here as fast as I could. I don’t know what you mean, brother.” Jarrod replied perplexed by the hostility he could see in Nick’s eyes.
“No – you wouldn’t, would you BROTHER!” Nick said as he let loose with his fist sending his brother flying across the room.
