The divorce would be final in just a few months. She was both relieved and excited about
being free. Janine knew the stigma that
came with being a divorced woman but she didn’t care. She acquired a newfound freedom she never knew existed if she had
stayed with her abusive husband.
Heath would never treat me like that, she thought to
herself. Then she smiled. Heath Barkley didn’t care that she was
divorced. They spent every weekend
together, going on picnics, riding, going to church and spending time at the
massive Barkley ranch. His family
enjoyed having her there, but were wondering when they were going to get
married.
Heath asked for her hand just last week. While Janine was thrilled that a man like
Heath Barkley wanted to marry her, she was enjoying her freedom. She did not want to hurt him and begged for his
understanding, so she smiled sweetly and answered his question with “Not now,
Honey. I’m not ready for a commitment
yet. I’ll let ya know when I am.” Heath
smiled lopsidedly at her knowing that the time for her to be ready would not be
that far away.
Janine was just waking up when she heard a pounding on her
door. She looked at her clock, and
noticed that it was only six am.
Wondering who it was at this time of the morning, she threw on a wrap
and went sleepily to the door.
“Who is it?” she yawned at the door.
“It’s Sheriff Madden, ma’am”
“Just a minute” She wondered what the sheriff wanted with
her.
“Howdy sheriff.
What can I do for ya? Its awfully early” She yawned again and went to
the cook stove to make some much needed coffee.
“I’m sorry for bothering you so early but the Cattlemen’s
Restaurant was robbed last night. Tom
Harrison was murdered” said Fred Madden, taking his hat off and twisting it in
his hands. “I was told you were the one
that closed up.” Janine was shocked.
Who’d kill Mr. Harrison? She thought. He was a nice man and treated everyone as
his equal, not caring what their status in the community was. He was just that type of person.
“Yeah I did.” She looked at him forlornly.
“I just came for some information.. I need to gather evidence while it is still
fresh.”
“What kind of information would ya like Sheriff?” She just
couldn’t imagine the chaos that Harrison’s death would bring to the town.
“Tell me what you did when you were closing the
restaurant, if you wouldn’t mind”
When the coffee was ready, Janine poured two cups. She set one in front of the Sheriff and
thought about what she did last night.
“Well Sheriff. I did the usual
clean up after I locked the doors, ya know sweepin’ floors, doing whatever dishes
that were left, filled the salt and pepper shakers…that kind of thing. When I was done, I made sure that the doors
and windows were secure and left to come home.” She was close to tears.
“You didn’t see or hear anything unusual?” The sheriff was
trying to be gentle with his investigation.
He nervously rubbed his hand through his thinning hair. How he hated this part of the job. Having to ask questions and pass on such
horrible news. He had placed his hat on
the small kitchen table and took a sip of the steaming coffee. He waited patiently for her answer.
She thought about that for a few minutes before she
answered. “No I didn’t Sheriff. I secured the restaurant and went home. Mr. Harrison always came in early to start the
cookin’ and bakin’ for the day. I don’t
know why someone would hurt such a nice man” She sipped her coffee, deep in
thought.
“Thanks Mrs. MacGraw.
I’m sorry to have bothered you so early. I may be back to ask for more information.” With that he put the
hat on his head and went out the door.
Janine closed the door behind him and let the tears fall. She trembled as she dressed, the full impact
of her boss’s death hit her. She had to
leave. She needed comfort while
grieving for her friend and the fear she felt knowing the murderer was still at
large. After making sure that the
cooking fire was out, she bolted out of the cabin. She knew that Heath would be the comfort she craved at that
moment.
Heath was eating breakfast and discussing his plans for
the day with Nick when Silas came into the dining room. Janine was behind him, her eyes red from
crying.
“Miss Janine to see you Mr. Heath.” Silas announced.
“Janey, what’s wrong?” Heath wore a look of concern over
the teary eyed woman standing before him.
She burst in tears once again.
Heath pulled her closer holding her till the tears subsided. He gently pulled her away and stared into
her beautiful emerald eyes, “Do ya want to tell me now, Sweetheart?”
“Oh H-h-h-heath!” She managed to get out, the tears
threatening to fall again. “My
b-b-b-boss, Tom Harrison, was k-k-k-illed last night.” She choked back the
tears. “The sh-sh-sh-sheriff was at my
place this m-m-m-morning asking questions”
Jarrod and Nick got up from the table at the same time,
“TOM HARRISON WAS KILLED???? WHO WOULD DO SUCH A THING?” bellowed Nick.
“Nicholas, please lower your voice” demanded Victoria,
“Janine is there anything we can do for you?”
“No ma’am” Janine paused for a minute. “ I just wanted to be around friends for a
bit. I hope I’m not intrudin’.”
“Oh no, Dear.
You’re always welcome here.
You’re like family, we love having you here.” Victoria smiled at Janine
then looked at Heath. “Maybe you two
would like to get some fresh air?”
Heath looked at Janine who hadn’t moved from his
side. “Do ya wanna go for a ride,
Janey?” Janine smiled at his nickname for her.
No one had ever called her that before.
“Yes Heath. I’d
like that very much. Nick, to answer
your question, I don’t who killed poor Mr. Harrison. The restaurant was robbed as well” She choked back a sob and
headed towards the door. She couldn’t
talk about it anymore, it was just too shocking.
The blond cowboy and the petite woman walked to where
Titan, Janine’s appaloosa was and unhitched him. Heath thought maybe a ride would help calm Janine down so she
could gather her thoughts. When they
got to the barn, Heath turned and looked at his lady love, “I have to saddle
Charger. Then we can go. Are ya sure yer gonna be okay, Janey?” He
asked with concern. She stood there,
holding Titan’s reins and petting the velvety nose.
“Yeah Heath. I’m
just stunned. I don’t know what to say
or what to do. I’m sorry that I
interrupted your breakfast.” She looked at him with tear-filled eyes. Heath pulled her towards him wanting to help
make the pain go away.
“I know there is nothing I can say or do that will help
ease the pain but if ya want to talk about it, ya know I’ll listen”, drawled
the cowboy.
“I know, Sweetie.
I appreciate it. Thanks for
bein’ here for me.” Her voice was muffled into his shoulder. Then she chuckled and pulled away from
him. “Let’s go for that ride!” Janine
watched with interest as he saddled Charger.
Within a few minutes he had him saddled and mounted. They rode out quickly towards the North
Pasture.
A few miles down the road from the Barkley fence line,
Gary MacGraw watched with insane jealousy as his former wife rode onto the
Barkley property. She’ll pay for what
she done to me! He thought to himself and with a wicked grin, no woman’s going
to leave me and get away with it! He had sold all 40 acres that they had
acquired together, gave her half the profits but not without some reservation.
She doesn’t deserve anything from me, he thought, then
formulated a plan to get her back and make her pay for what she had done to
him. “It’s too bad that Harrison fella
got in the way. That should’ve been
her. At least I got some money out of
that safe!” He grinned at the memory when the dark haired, portly man screamed
for mercy when Gary MacGraw pulled the trigger and killed him. He turned and rode out towards Stockton, a
plan starting to form in his mind.
It was early afternoon when Heath and Janine rode back to
the ranch house. “Boy howdy, I’m
hungry”, he commented.
“Me too, Heath. I
suppose we’re too late for lunch? I guess we should’ve packed a picnic. I just wasn’t thinkin’ when we left this
mornin’.”
“We can whip up a couple of sandwiches. Silas won’t mind.” Heath looked at Janine
and asked her tenderly, “Feel better?”
“Yeah I do. Thanks
for takin’ me for a ride. I really
enjoyed it and the fresh air was just what I needed. I guess I should ride home soon” She really did not want to go
home yet but felt she overstayed her welcome at the ranch house.
“Not until ya have somethin’ to eat first, young
lady. Then I’ll escort you home.” They
dismounted and hitched the horses in front of the sprawling mansion. Heath took her lily white hand and held it
while they entered. Janine looked shyly
at him as they went to the kitchen to fix themselves sandwiches.
After lunch, they went into the parlor to sit and talk for
a bit. Victoria and Audra came in and
sat down as well. “How are you feeling,
Janine?” Victoria asked motherly.
“Much better, thank you.
That ride was just what I needed.” She blushed in spite of herself. She was thinking about how they were sitting
at Lookout Point with his arms wrapped protectively around her. She looked up at Heath with a grin. Victoria didn’t miss the look that passed
between the two of them and smiled to herself.
It won’t be long and they will be announcing their
engagement, she thought. To Audra, she
said, “Will you ask Silas to bring us some tea?”
“Yes, Mother.” Audra obediently left the room in search of
Silas.
“Are you staying for tea Janine?” Victoria looked at her
expectantly for an answer.
“Well I should go home soon. I have some errands I need to run and see what is happenin’ with
the restaurant. But, yes, I will stay
for tea. Thank you Mrs. Barkley.”
Heath got up and stood by the fireplace. “ I’m gonna take Janine home, then find out
what information Fred has on this murder.
It seems strange how Tom was killed.
There was no logical explanation for it.” Heath was lost in
thought.
“Good idea “ came a voice from the doorway. “I would go with you but I have a ton of
paperwork to do.” The oldest dark haired brother sounded so tired.
“Jarrod. How good
to see you” Victoria got up and gave him a hug. Jarrod, in return, kissed the top of her head.
“How lovely to see you pretty lady” Jarrod smiled to his
mother. Just at that moment, Silas and
Audra walked into the parlor bringing the silver tea pot and a tray full of
snacks for them all.
“Thank you Silas”, and to Jarrod, she asked, “Care for
some tea with us?” She poured the tea into the china cups and passed them
around. Jarrod and Heath each had a cup
as well, even though they would have preferred something a little stronger.
After everyone drank their tea, Janine announced it was
time to go home. Heath got up and
grabbed his hat still sitting on the table next to the door. “I’ll ride with ya Janey” he drawled. “I’ll be back soon. Don’t wait dinner for me Mother.” He kissed
his step mother on the cheek opening the door for Janine.
“Thanks for everythin’, Mrs. Barkley. I’ll come by Sunday as usual.” She looked
around the room, said good bye to everyone and exited out the door that Heath
was holding open for her.
After the door was closed, Victoria smiled to her children
and said, “ I don’t think it will be long before they announce their
engagement”
“Yes, I noticed that too Mother,” said Jarrod, deep in
thought. Yes, he thought, my little
brother has fallen hard for that green-eyed beauty!
“Oh, won’t it be exciting? Planning for a wedding! I just
can’t wait!” exclaimed Audra, clasping her hands together, already planning the
nuptials in her mind. Victoria looked
at her daughter and shook her head laughingly.
“Audra”, she said in an authoritative voice, “We mustn’t
say a word. Let them announce it when
they are ready. Promise me?”
“Yes, Mother. I
won’t say a word. But isn’t it
exciting?” Victoria and Jarrod could only nod in agreement.
Heath and Janine rode together in silence for a time. Then Janine broke the silence saying,
“Heath, may I go with ya when ya talk to the sheriff?”
“Why? There may be details that you won’t wanna hear,
honey” Heath wanted to protect her from the awful details of the restaurateur’s
death.
“I don’t care! He was a good friend and I don’t want to be
left in the dark about anything!” She was close to tears again and was trying
hard to keep them from falling. Heath
looked over at her, and felt the need to keep her safe.
“Well, Janey, ya can come with me but I want ya to promise
me to keep quiet, all right?” Janine looked at him, confused.
“Why? I want to know everythin’. Maybe that killer was after me.
I HAVE A RIGHT TA KNOW!” she was shouting, unable to stop herself.
“Shhhhh…..Janey.” They had stopped by the lake and dismounted. Heath grabbed her arms, shaking her. “Janey, I understand. Please don’t shout!” He pulled her to him
and held her firmly. She once again
cried into his blue chambray shirt, soaking it. “Boy howdy, Honey! I shoulda brought another shirt with me.” She
pulled out of his arms and giggled.
“I’m sorry Heath.
I just can’t stop cryin’” she sniffled and pulled out a handkerchief
from her shirt sleeve to blow her nose.
She hugged him again and said, “okay I think I’m ready to go now. I’m sorry.
I’m such a pain today.”
Heath hugged her tight, loving the feel of her curvy body
against his rugged frame.
“Its okay I understand..
Besides I like it when you turn to me in your time of need. ” She pulled away and looked deep into his
blue eyes. Without either of them
realizing what was happening, they kissed passionately. After a few minutes, they pulled away,
breathless. “Boy howdy! I mean I’m
sorry Janey.”
“Don’t be sorry, Heath.
I’ve been wantin’ ya to kiss me for a long time, “ she admitted guiltily. Then she looked at him and blushed. “I actually thought you were gonna kiss me
on the mountain today”
“I wanted to. But
I knew ya were upset, so I held back.” He was so embarrassed. He hadn’t meant for that to happen. “That was so nice. But you’re right, we best be goin’.” They mounted their horses
again and rode off towards Stockton, each lost in thought of that kiss.
After an hour’s ride they had finally reached Stockton and
made their way to the Sheriff’s office.
There they found Sheriff Madden deep into his paperwork. He looked up as the couple entered the
room. “Heath! Mrs. MacGraw! What brings
you here?” he greeted them as he stood up, his large, six foot frame filling
the room. “Coffee?” He offered as he
filled his own cup.
“No thanks Fred” replied Heath. “We came to find out if ya found anything more on the murder of
Tom Harrison.” Heath took Janine’s hand and squeezed it gently.
“No, I didn’t Heath, I’m sorry to say. I haven’t found any clues as yet and I have
questioned everyone that worked at the restaurant.” Janine looked
dumbfounded.
“Is the restaurant to be closed? What am I supposed to
do?” Janine was threatening to break down, yet again. Heath squeezed her hand gently to calm her down and it worked.
“Well, Mrs MacGraw.
I haven’t heard what they are going to do with the restaurant. His wife is very distraught of course. It’ll be closed until she sees fit to run it
or dispose of it. That’ll take time”
“Oh yes. Of
course. How heartless of me not to
consider her feelings. I must go see
her tomorrow.” Janine felt guilty of not thinking of her good friend’s
wife.
“Fred, ya need help with the investigation?” Heath needed
to do something to help ease the pain that Janine was feeling. The older man thought for a minute and
nodded his head.
“Yes, I think I might need a little help Heath. I’ll fill you in a little later” He nodded
towards her. “I think you should go
home little lady and get some rest.
When we find something out, Heath or I’ll let you know, okay?”
“I guess so. If
you’re sendin’ me home to get me out of the way, then I guess I’ll go. I don’t like it, but I’ll go” With that she
stomped out of the sheriff’s office and slammed the door, frustrated that she
could do nothing to help out. She
unhitched Titan looking towards the restaurant. Maybe I can look in the restaurant myself and see about cleaning
up the mess, she thought. She tied
Titan up again and started across the street when she felt a strong hand on her
arm.
“Where do ya think you’re goin’?” asked a worried
Heath.
“I was going to see if I can clean up some of the mess at
the restaurant” replied Janine, looking down at the ground. Heath cupped his hand under her chin. He pulled her face up to look at him.
“I don’t think ya should go there alone, Honey” he said
gently, “the killer may be lurking around .
I just want ya to be safe.” He looked deep into her emerald eyes and got
lost in them. She thought about
this. She definitely didn’t think this
through very well.
“Okay, Heath. I
just wanted to look around and clean up a little. Will ya come with me? I just need to do somethin’. I feel useless, not being able to do
anythin’!” She held his hand tightly while he pondered his answer. He looked over at the Cattlemen’s Hotel and
Restaurant. It looked so empty, no one
coming in or out of the usually busy place.
“Okay, Honey.
Let’s go over there and see what there is to clean up. I’m sure Mrs. Harrison will appreciate ya
doin’ that for her.” Hand in hand, they walked across the busy street and over
to the restaurant.
As Janine was taking the key out of her purse, they were
surprised to find that the door wasn’t locked.
Heath took his gun out of his holster and went in first, not sure what
he was going to find. Janine stayed
behind Heath, following him inside. He
motioned for Janine to stay put by the door while he checked the building out. Finally Heath came out, bringing a teary
eyed older woman with him. “Mrs.
Harrison!” exclaimed a relieved Janine.
“Whatcha doin’ here? I mean…..”Janine seemed flustered at seeing the
woman in the restaurant.
“I just had to come down here. I needed to do something”, she said hesitantly surveying the mess
around her. “I don’t know how I’m going
to get through this” Janine put her arms around Mrs. Harrison and hugged
her.
“I came over to clean up.
I hope that’s okay.” Janine let go of the woman and looked at her. “I was goin’ to come see ya tomorrow. I’m so sorry about Mr. Harrison. He was such a nice man.” They both choked
back a sob, each not wanting the other to see how upset they were.
Together, they worked to right the chairs and tables,
swept and mopped the floors, while Heath hauled the broken safe to the back
room and fixed broken furniture. Within
a few hours it was looking better and the ladies felt good for having done
something useful. “I don’t know if I
can open the restaurant again. But I
know that Tom would want it busy again.
This place was his life” Mrs. Harrison said quietly more to herself than
anyone else. Janine put her arm around
the older woman’s shoulders and squeezed.
“I know. Maybe we
can open it soon and have a day where we remember Mr. Harrison. How does that sound to ya?” Mrs. Harrison
looked at Janine in surprise at her suggestion.
“Why that’s a good idea! I will let you know when we can
do that.” Mrs. Harrison smiled at Janine and Heath. “Thanks for your help. I
was wondering how I was going to do this all by myself.”
“No problem, Mrs. Harrison” drawled Heath. “Janine, I should take ya home now, its
gettin’ late. Do ya need a lift home
Mrs. Harrison?” Heath ran his hand through his blond hair and replaced his
hat.
“No thanks Mr. Barkley.
I don’t live too far from here.” She reached for her wrap and her purse,
then started for the door.
“Well let us walk ya home then. Its not safe out at this time of night for two beautiful ladies
to be walking alone.” Heath winked at the both of them and offered his arms to
them. They walked down the street
toward the Harrison home, not knowing they were being watched.
“Well, well, well.” Gary grinned, thinking that maybe he
could put his plan into action soon.
Patience was not his strong point but patient he had to be so that
everything would work out the way he wanted it to.
“Soon, my pretty, soon! I’ll take care of ya and yer
cowboy. I’ll show ya what I think of
yer leavin’ me. I’ll take care of ya
but good!” He smiled and patted his rifle.
“Nope. Won’t be long now” He
watched Heath and the women walk down the street.
As they strolled down the street back to the restaurant
after dropping Mrs. Harrison off at her house, Heath turned to her and said,
“Well, milady. Time for ya to get home
too.” Janine smiled and nodded.
“Yeah I’m getting tired.
Are you going ta come in and have a coffee before you go home?” They
arrived at their horses and mounted.
They were riding towards her little cabin off the main road.
“Boy howdy, I think I will” said Heath after a bit,
startling Janine. Janine grinned,
riding a little faster.
They rode up to the little log cabin, and Janine got off
Titan. Heath sat on Charger and said,
“I’ll go put Titan in the livery and be right back. Wouldn’t want ya to worry about it tonight.”
“Thanks Heath.
I’ll go fix us some coffee while I’m waiting for ya to come back. Hurry!” Heath grinned, grabbed the
appaloosa’s reins and galloped off to the livery to take care of Titan.
Heath was putting the appaloosa in the livery when he
heard a noise. He put the saddle up on
the rail and looked around. Not seeing
anyone in the large livery stable, he started to curry the horse, thinking
about the day’s events. Its been an
eventful…..he didn’t finish that thought as he suddenly was hit in the
head. Just before he slumped down into
the hay, he caught a glimpse of who had hit him. He heard a sadistic giggle and “That’s one outta the way. Now to find the whore!” Heath passed out
then, blood soaking the hay beneath him.
Janine was getting worried. He should’ve been here by now, she thought. Well maybe he ran into someone and forgot
the time. Yeah that’s it, she reassured
herself. She looked out the window but
didn’t see Heath out there. She checked
the coffee to see if it was done. While
she poured herself a cup of coffee, she thought about the events of the
day. She made her way over to the sofa
to wait for him. She smiled to herself
when she thought about Heath kissing her.
A knock on the door disturbed her thoughts and she very nearly ran to
the door.
She threw open the door and to her surprise, it wasn’t
Heath that was standing there, but Gary, her ex husband. “W-w-w-what are you doing here? H-h-h-how
did ya find me?” Janine was beside herself in terror. Where was Heath? Why didn’t he come back?
“Hi Sweetheart.
Miss me?” The large dark man sneered at her. Janine cowered in fright.
She didn’t know what to do or what to think. “Well aren’t you going to invite me in?” He pushed the door open
with his rifle and sat at the small dining table. “Get me a coffee, whore!” Janine got a cup out of the cupboard
and shakily poured a cup of coffee.
She glanced at the door, hoping her cowboy would be coming
soon. What in the world was Gary doing
here? She just couldn’t figure out what he wanted. She was confused and frightened at the events enfolding in front
of her eyes.
“Your cowboy won’t be coming anytime soon, sweetheart! I
took care of him!” he laughed sadistically.
Janine glared at him, suddenly finding her voice, saying,
“ Whatcha doin’ here? Whatcha do to Heath?” She found she couldn’t keep the
fear out of her voice.
“I told ya. He
won’t be botherin’ us for a while.
Don’t worry your pretty lil head.” He was brandishing his rifle wildly
around when he stopped and pointed it at her head. “Now my pretty, we have some business to take care of.” She was
really frightened. There was no one to
help her and she was trying to think of a plan to get away.
“What kind of business?” She couldn’t think of a thing
that was left unsaid or undone. The man
just sat there pointing his rifle at her head, laughing menacingly.
“You’ll find out whore! Just be nice to me and things will
go as I planned them. If you’re not
nice to me then,” he pointed the gun at her, “BOOM…off goes your pretty little
head!” He sneered at her and pointed to his cup, “Another coffee NOW!” She
scrambled over to the coffee pot and very nervously poured a cup.
The man is insane, she reflected. Now if I can get that rifle out of his hands
and make it to the door. How am I gonna
do that? She had to gather her wits and be brave about this. Oh what could’ve happened to Heath? She was
really worried.
Heath woke up in the livery stable and tried to get up. As a wave of dizziness hit him, he fell down
hard on the hay again. He tried again,
finding that it was impossible for him to get up. Come on Boy, he thought, you need to get up and see Janey. He didn’t know why he thought she might be
in trouble. He just knew she needed
him. He fell back on the hay and stayed
that way till the livery boy came in.
The young man and his equally young partner found Heath lying in the
stable.
“We gotta get him to the doctor, Hank” the boy said. “Help me put him in the wagon and take him
to the doctor!” Heath groaned as the boys struggled to put the large man into
the wagon. Finally, they got him
situated in the wagon and rushed off to find the doctor. After they got Heath into the examining
room, they rushed off to inform the Barkleys of what had happened.
When Heath awoke again, he was in Doctor Merar’s examining
room. He tried to get up. “No, Heath, you must lie down and rest. You have a bad concussion” The kindly
doctor, who had seen his share of the Barkley stubbornness, gently but forcibly
pushed him back down.
“But Doc.. I have
to go to Janey! She may be in trouble!” Heath once again tried to get up. Just at that moment Victoria and Nick walked
into the office.
“Doctor Merar! How is Heath? Will he be all right?” asked
a concerned Victoria.
“When can we see him?” questioned a very upset Nick
Barkley. He was wringing his hands and
pacing the floor.
“He has a concussion, but other than that he seems to be
fine,” reassured the doctor to his two worried friends. “He’ll need rest. You can go see him for a few minutes but don’t get him too
agitated.”
Nick burst into the examination room, stopping to stare at
his little brother. He had a bandage
wrapped around his blond head. “Hey
Boy! You gotta get better. I can’t run
the ranch by myself ya know! I need ya!”
At the sound of his brother’s voice, Heath opened his blue
eyes and stared at him. “J-j-janey! She
needs help,” his voice was quiet but Nick heard him. “I-I-I-I need to go to her!” As he tried to get up. a wave of dizziness hit him and fell back
onto the bed.
“Now, Heath, ya can’t go running around yet. Doctor Merar will be angry if ya hurt
yourself again! Ya need to rest.” Nick saw the pain in Heath’s eyes. “I’ll see if Janine is okay. Don’t ya worry”
“Thanks N-n-nick.
I think she may be in trouble!”
Gary was pacing the floor, pointing the gun at his former
wife. Janine was thoroughly frightened
but tried not to let it show. Suddenly
she had an idea. “Gary,” she said
sweetly. “Why ya here? Did I do
somethin’ to make ya angry?”
“HA! Woman! Whatcha think? I’d let ya go without a fight?”
He spat at her then laughed hysterically.
“MY GOD WOMAN! YA STUPIDER THAN I THOUGHT!” He lunged at her, intent on
grabbing her, making her listen to him.
Janine just stood there, mortified, then at the last
moment, jumped out of the way of his reaching hands. She moved closer to the counter where a butcher knife was. “But I thought we had settled that, Gary!”
I have to get that knife.
She inched closer to the counter when suddenly the wooden
door crashed open. There stood Nick
Barkley. Janine gulped and made a leap
for the knife. Gary, startled by the
door, whirled around to find a large dark haired man standing there. Janine grabbed the knife and ran towards
Gary, thrusting the knife menacingly towards him. Gary turned at that moment and aimed his rifle towards the
strawberry blond. He pulled the
trigger. There was a sound of gunfire,
then all was silent.
A few minutes later, Janine moaned and looked around. She sat up, mesmerized by the scene in front
of her. There was Nick, standing at the
door, still holding his pistol. Lying
on the floor in front of her, was her former husband, dead from a single shot
in the back. “Oh Nick!” she cried and
threw herself into his arms, “Where’s Heath? Please tell me he’s okay! Please!”
She was crying hysterically not really sure what had just transpired at her
little house.
“Shhh. It’s okay
now Janine” Nick held the sobbing girl, stroking her hair. “Heath’s been hurt but he’ll be fine. He’s with Mother at the Doctor’s
office. I’ll take you there shortly.”
Over Janine’s head he looked around the room and saw Gary MacGraw lying face
down with his tainted blood still seeping out of his wound.
Heath was worried about his beloved. In his state of mind, he imagined all kinds
of things happening to Janine but felt helpless lying there in bed. “M-m-m-other” he croaked.
“Yes Heath?” Victoria looked into his pained eyes. She rubbed his cheek lovingly as she purred
“Relax Sweetheart. Everything will work
out. Just you wait and see.” She smiled
her best smile.
“Mother. Janey is
goin’ to be worried about me. Gotta
tell her. Gotta see if she is all
right. I have a bad feeling.” He
started to get up. Victoria put her
hands on his shoulders and pushed him gently but firmly to lie down.
“If you do that again, I will get Dr. Merar to give you
some laudanum to keep you down!” Heath grimaced at the thought of that horrid
medicine.
“Okay Mother. But
I’m worried about her. I hope Nick got
there in time!”
“Trust your brother, Heath. They will be okay. Before
you know it, they will be back!” Victoria hoped her voice conveyed confidence
that she surely did not feel.
Nick and Janine were talking to the sheriff about Gary
MacGraw. “I have no idea why he would
go after me, Sheriff. We are in the
process of havin’ our divorce finalized.”
“I don’t know either Mrs. MacGraw but I’m willing to bet a
hundred dollars that he is the one that murdered Tom Harrison.” Sheriff Madden
looked down trodden when he said this.
“I’ll go to your house to remove the body and gather evidence. Nick, you comin’ with me?”
“Yeah, I have to take Janine to see Heath and be right
over there.” Nick looked at Janine with concern in his eyes. She was shaking uncontrollably and was
almost sobbing. “Janine?” Nick asked
softly, “I’ll take you to see Heath now.
Are you sure you’re okay?” Nick put his arm around her shoulders and
pulled her towards him in a brotherly hug.
“Yeah I think so, Nick.
Thanks for your concern.” She smiled a teary smile at him and said,
“Let’s go”
“I’ll meet ya over there Sheriff. See ya soon” The older man nodded his head
at Nick and watched as they left.
Nick held open the heavy door at the doctor’s office for
Janine. She looked frantically around
the room. “Where is he? Were ya telling
me the truth, Nick? Is he all right?” Victoria came out of the examining room.
“Janine!” The older woman exclaimed with much relief in
her voice. “Heath would like to see
you. He is resting right now but you
can see him in a few minutes. Dr. Merar
is with him right now. Are you okay?
Are you hurt anywhere?”
Janine looked at her hands. There was blood on them as well as on her dress. “Oh my goodness. I don’t know.” She went over the basin to wash up. She took the face cloth and tried to wipe
off the blood.
Nick watched Janine and his mother while Janine tried to
get rid of the blood. “Mother!” He said
in his usual tone of voice…Loud.
Victoria turned and looked at him.
She gave him a disapproving look.
“Mother.” He said again, a little quieter. “Tell Heath I will be right back. Will he be able to go home tonight?”
“I don’t know Nick.
He has a concussion and needs to rest.
We’ll know more when you get back.” She looked at him, “You are going to
help Fred?”
Nick nodded, “I’ll be back soon Mother.” He looked at
Janine and said, “ You gonna be okay?” Janine nodded and gave him a grateful
look.
“Thank you Nick. I
owe you big time.” She went over to him and gave him a kiss on the cheek. She then hugged him, “Thanks for saving my
life.”
Nick blushed and replied “Was nothin’ ma’am. Was nothin!” He gave her a toothy grin and
went out the door.
Victoria regarded the scene between Nick and Janine with
interest. The door to the examining
room opened and Dr. Merar walked towards them.
“You can see him now, Victoria.
I have given him some laudanum to help him relax.” He looked at Janine
and said, “ You must be Janine. He’s
been asking for you. You had better see
him so he can calm down a little.” He grinned at this statement. Heath was getting too persistent that
something terrible had happened to Janine.
“Thanks Doctor. I will
go see him now.” She looked at Victoria, “Is all the blood off my dress?”
“Yes Janine. I
think it is. I think that Howard should
have a look at you though. Just to make
sure you aren’t hurt anywhere.” Janine gave her a look which said, I’m going to
see Heath first. Try to stop me. Victoria chuckled and nodded. She understood that look.
Janine opened the door quietly so not to disturb him. She stole quietly over to him and watched as
he slept. She grasped his hand,
squeezing it gently. He looked so small
in that large room. She looked around
the room. It was filled with cabinets
full of medicine, pictures on the wall, along with Doctor Merar’s diplomas of
Medicine. There were different pieces
of equipment aligning the outside wall.
She felt a squeeze back on her hand.
She looked down and she saw a pair of blue eyes looking at her,
lovingly. “Janey,” he whispered. She brushed a stray hair off of his
forehead. She leaned over and kissed
his cheek.
“Heath!” She whispered back. “I was worried about ya.
Ya didn’t come back!” Her eyes began to water.
“I was worried about ya too. I had a feeling that something happened to ya. You are all right aren’t ya?” Heath squeezed
her hand harder.
“Yeah, I’m fine” As Janine squeezed his hand, he pulled
her towards him. “Oh Heath” Her lips
met his and they kissed. “Heath you
should rest. This is not helping you.”
She giggled.
“I know Honey. But
I’m so glad you are okay. Will ya stay
with me for a while?” Janine nodded and held his hand till he fell asleep. She rose out of the chair, going out to talk
to the doctor.
“Will he be able to go home tonight?” She questioned.
“Not tonight, Mrs MacGraw. But if he rests and doesn’t develop a fever, he should be able to
go home tomorrow afternoon at the earliest.
I will be lucky if he will stay put that long.” The older man rolled his
eyes and looked at Victoria. “That
stubbornness of the Barkleys is going to kill him one day!” Victoria smiled,
knowing full well what the good doctor meant by that statement. “Mrs. MacGraw, let me look at you and make
sure you weren’t hurt. You had an awful
lot of blood on you.”
“But I’m fine, Doctor.
Honest!”
Dr. Merar looked imploringly at her and shook his head,
“yep you and Heath make a fine pair! Both as stubborn as mules!” Janine smiled
and let the doctor examine her. He
found a small wound where a rifle bullet had just grazed her side. “You are lucky, young lady. I’m surprised you didn’t feel this!” He
patched her up saying, “I want you to rest.
I know you want to be with Heath, but you won’t do him or you any good
if this doesn’t heal.” He gave her a stern look and said, “Go lie down in the
examination room where Heath is. There
is a cot there but make sure you don’t disturb him too much. He needs his rest too.”
Janine was too tired to argue. She went to where Heath was lying and found the cot. She lied down on it, falling asleep almost
immediately. Nick came in shortly after
to see how Heath was. “I sent word out
to Jarrod and Audra, Mother” He put his large hand on Victoria’s shoulder,
“Told them that Heath’ll be fine and not to bother coming out as we’ll be home
tomorrow.”
“Thank you, Son.
Janine has a small wound in her left side but otherwise she’ll be fine.”
Nick watched his sleeping brother and his girlfriend. “They really love each other, don’t they?”
he whispered.
“Yes, Nick, they really do. I wonder if they realize just how much?” Victoria put her finger
to her lips shushing Nick. Heath was moving
around, trying to say something.
“N-n-nick? Where are you Nick?” The blond man was trying
to sit up.
“Shhhh Heath. I’m
right here. Now lay down Boy. The doc’ll be angry if you mess up his
stitchin’!”
Heath obediently lied down and focused his blue eyes on
the hazel ones staring back at him.
“What happened? Did Janey get hurt?” He didn’t see that she was lying
right next to him on the cot. He didn’t
remember that he had seen her just a few short hours ago.
“Janine is fine, Heath.
Look beside you,” replied Nick quietly and nodded his head towards the
sleeping figure. Heath let out a
relieved sigh. “She has a small bullet
wound in her side but otherwise she’s fine.
Now you rest. We can go home
tomorrow as long as you rest.”
“Thanks Nick.
You’re a good brother. I don’t
know what I’d do without ya.”
“Me neither, little brother. Me neither!” Nick put his hand on Heath’s big shoulder and gave
it a squeeze. “Now try to get some
rest. Mother and I will be right here
if you need us.” Heath nodded, glanced at Janine and closed his eyes sleepily.
Early the next morning, Heath woke early as was his
custom. He turned slowly on his side to
watch the strawberry blonde woman sleep.
He went over the events of yesterday in his head. When his head started to give him grief, he
closed his eyes and just lied there.
When the pain subsided, he opened his eyes finding a pair of emerald
ones looking at him.
“Mornin’.” She whispered.
She yawned and said “Could use some coffee. How ‘bout you?” She grinned at him.
“Mornin’ to ya.
Yep. Coffee sounds good to me!
How’s ‘bout we get up and make some?” Heath started to get up. Victoria woke up and saw that Heath was
about to get out of bed.
“Heath! What do you think you’re doing?” she said in her
most authoritative voice.
Janine couldn’t help but giggle at the look on Heath’s
face. He quickly got back under the
blankets looking up at her sheepishly.
“Just wanted some coffee, Mother.”
Nick woke up then and saw Heath turning a shade of red
while Janine giggled.
“Okay, what did I miss?” He looked at his silver haired
mother, who was trying to hide a smile and shook his head. “Never mind I don’t wanna know. I’m going to get some coffee!” He got up
then just as the three others burst out laughing. “Crazy people. Can’t
figure ‘em out.”
“And how are you two feeling this morning?” Victoria
reached over feeling Heath’s forehead.
“No fever. That’s good.” She
then walked over to Janine and checked her wrappings. “looking good.” She nodded her head in approval. “You two behave yourselves while I go talk
to Howard.” Heath blushed a deeper shade of red.
“Yes Mother.”
“Yes Mrs. Barkley” The two younger people looked at each
other giggling. Victoria shrugged her
shoulders and exited the room.
“Come here, Janey.”
“No. You heard
your mother. If she was to catch us….”
She giggled at the thought. “Oh what
the heck.” She climbed out of bed and pushed the cot closer. “There that’s better,” she said to no one in
particular. When she reached out her
hand, it was clasped by his large masculine one.
She turned on her side and stared into those expressive
eyes of his. All she saw was the love
he held for her. “I’m so glad you’re
okay Janey.” His eyes turned to concern when she had to turn onto her back,
wincing in pain. “Are you all right?”
“I’m fine.” She replied, not sounding at all
convinced. “I guess I hurt a little bit
more than I thought,” she admitted.
“I’m sorry you got hurt Heath. I
was so worried about ya!” She almost sobbed at the thought that maybe he
wouldn’t be here at this very moment.
“I was so worried about ya as well. I tried gettin’ to ya last night. I got hit in the head by someone…Who was
it?” Heath tried hard to remember. But
try as he might, he could not make out the face that was haunting him. It was all a little foggy yet.
“Heath? Gary came to the house last night. He’s the one that tried to kill me. I was so scared!” Her lower lip began to
tremble as she recalled the events of last night. “I-I-I-f Nick hadn’t shown up when he did….” She didn’t finish
the sentence. She shuddered at the
thought of what could have happened.
Heath held her small hand tightly in his own. He wanted to hold her in his strong arms and tell her everything
was going to be okay. The dizziness and
the wrath of Victoria kept him glued to his bed.
“It’s okay now Janey.
Everythin’ will be fine. You’ll
see.” Heath reassured her as best as he could, knowing it wasn’t quite
enough.
“How’s everyone this mornin’?” asked Dr. Merar taking out
his stethoscope and checking Heath for any signs of infection or fever. “I’m afraid you will have to let go of her
hand for a bit, Heath. Makes it a
little difficult to check you out” The elder man chuckled when Heath blushed
and let go of her hand albeit reluctantly.
He checked his pulse, his heart and lungs then finally his eyes. “Everything seems to be looking good Heath.”
He gently lifted Heath’s head and checked his stitches. “I think if you are careful you may go home
this afternoon. BUT you are not to do a
regular day’s work for a few weeks. I
mean it Heath. NO WORK for two weeks!”
Heath could only nod and groan. “I don’t like lazin’ around Doc.
You know that.”
Victoria gave him a disapproving look. “You will do as the good doctor says young
man!”
Heath sighed and nodded his head. Nothing worse then having Mother’s wrath
upon him. He knew there was no arguing
with her or Nick. He would make sure
Heath stayed in bed. He heard a giggle
beside him. “Your turn Mrs. MacGraw”
Heath could only smile lopsidedly at her with a twinkle in his eye. Glad I’m not the only one, he thought.
Howard Merar examined Janine and checked the wound. “Well it doesn’t look like any infection is
setting in. But the same goes for you
young lady. You should rest for at
least a week. No riding for at least
that.”
Victoria looked at the woman who looked like a child
caught with her hand caught in a cookie jar.
“You will stay at the ranch while you are recuperating. That way I can keep an eye on you.” Janine
looked at the matronly woman with a look of contempt. “And I won’t have any arguments!”
Janine heard a manly giggle beside her. She threw him a look that could kill. “Shush up” she said in a voice that only he
could hear. Heath just winked at her.
Nick stood by and watched this scene unfold before
him. He chuckled to himself and
thought, well this should prove to be interesting! Those two really deserve
each other and God help the rest of us!
A little while later, the foursome were in the carriage
heading towards the Barkley Ranch.
“Watch the bumps, MR. Barkley!” teased Heath. Janine giggled. “OW! I told
ya to watch those bumps!”
Nick turned and glared at the passengers in the back. “If you don’t like my driving MR Barkley,
then you drive!” This elicited a few more giggles from the back.
“Okay Nick. I’ll
drive. I’ll guarantee I’ll miss most of
those bumps!”
Nick had stopped the carriage, handing the reins to Heath
when Victoria stated, “Nicholas and Heath Barkley! Stop this right now! Heath,
you know you shouldn’t be driving and Nicholas you know better then to fall
into one of Heath’s little jokes.” She was shaking her head at the boys who
sheepishly looked at their mother.
Heath was a deep shade of red.
Nick picked up the reins again and started driving.
“Sorry Mother”
“Sorry Mother. OW!
Janey will ya stop that?” Janine had slapped Heath on the arm. The matriarch just shook her head.
“What have I gotten myself into?” She leaned back and
listened to the giggling in the back.
“Yep its going to be interesting.”
When they got back to the ranch, Nick drove up to the
front door and got out. He helped
Victoria out of the carriage as well as Janine and Heath. “Upstairs to bed both of you.” Directed
Victoria.
“Yes Mother. Shall
we, Janey?” He took Janine by the arm guiding her into the massive house. They walked upstairs together, stopping in
front of the guest room. “I guess this
is where we part dear lady.”
Janine giggled, her side was starting to hurt. “I guess so. Oh Heath. I don’t want to
go just yet.” She looked bereft at him.
He took the hint giving her a kiss on the cheek.
He opened the door to her room and said “You’d better go
lie down. You are as white as a ghost.”
He stroked her cheek lovingly. “I will
come see you soon”
“All right Heath.
I’m kinda tired. All that
giggling wears a person out!” They smiled at each other. “You go get some rest too, okay, Sweetheart?”
“Talk to you in a while my pretty!” After taking one last look
at her, he walked slowly towards his room.
His head was beginning to hurt and he was starting to feel dizzy once
again.
A few days later both Heath and Janine were beginning to
be bored of their beds. They hadn’t
seen each other since they got home, and one was missing the other. Of course, they sent messages through
various Barkley residents, but that wasn’t enough. Besides they felt the others were getting a little tired of being
messengers. When Victoria and Audra
left for the day, they told Silas to keep an eye on the injured people. Not to let them out of bed unless they had
to go to the bathroom. Silas agreed but
knew he couldn’t keep an eye on them all day.
He had his own chores to do.
Watching out the window, Janine made sure that the ladies
were gone before she put her plan into motion.
I’ve had enough of this bed. I’m
sure a little stroll down the hall to Heath’s room won’t kill me! she giggled
to herself.
Heath was getting restless lying in his bed. He was tossing and turning when he heard a
rap on his door. “Yeah.” He said to the
door. He was surprised when in walked
Janine. “Janey! What are ya doing outta
bed?” He started to get up.
“Oh don’t get up.
I just came in for a minute before Silas comes in. I’m so bored! How ya doin’?” she inquired of
him.
“Much better now that you are here. Even though you shouldn’t be,” he
scolded. He smiled taking her
hand. “I’m bored too. I’m glad you came. I was just thinkin’ I wanted to come see ya too.” Janine sat on
the edge of the bed, looking about the room.
Heath sat up, patted the bed so that she could sit next to him. “Now who says we aren’t restin’?” Janine
blushed, placing her head on his chest.
She lied there for a while basking in the comfort of his strong,
muscular arms. She turned to look up at
him and was met by his lips.
“Boy howdy, Janey! Keep that up and I’ll want to be
married tomorrow!” He smiled at her and kissed her again. Janey never felt so loved in all her
life. She wanted to be married to this
man, right now!
“I love you Heath” she blurted out. She smiled at him, blushing.
“I love you too Janine” He gathered her up in his arms,
kissing her soundly. “I think you
better go back to your room, Janey, before Silas comes up here.” He didn’t want
her to leave yet. “Next time I’m comin
to see ya!”
Janine snuggled down into his arms. “I don’t want to leave yet.” She
moaned. “But you’re right. I’d better.
Wanna walk me to my room?” She looked up at him lovingly.
“Yeah I do! I have to get outta this bed! Even for a
little stroll down the hall!” They got out of the bed, and walked out the
door. They didn’t see that Silas was
coming up the back stairs to bring them lunch.
“Mr. Heath! Mrs. MacGraw! Whatever are ya doing outta bed?
You know what Mrs. Barkley is gonna say!” They looked guiltily at the black
man.
“Will it hurt to eat lunch with each other, will it? We’ve
been cooped up in our rooms far too long!” Silas sighed and relented.
“Okay but ya hurry back to your own room, ya hear?” They
both nodded, heading off to Janine’s room.
A few hours later, Victoria and Audra arrived home from
their trip into Stockton. They did all
their errands plus found time to do a little shopping. Audra was excitedly explaining to Nick and
Jarrod, who had both come in at the same time, about the new dress she had just
purchased. “Its green with light yellow
stripes. It has lace around the collar
and cuffs. Its simply breathtaking.”
She glanced at the men who were standing at the bottom of the staircase, holding
the women’s packages, not paying attention to Audra’s ramblings. “Mother, they aren’t paying attention to
me!”
Victoria observed her daughter lovingly. She loved her daughter very much but at
times she was spoiled beyond belief.
Audra was often child like in her actions but was very grown up in her
work at the orphanage, church , and other organizations that she set her heart
upon. She had the admiration of every
eligible bachelor in town which kept her brothers quite busy protecting her
from them.
“Audra,” she gently guided her daughter up the grand
staircase. “They are men and aren’t up
to date on the latest fashions. Why
don’t we look in on Heath and Janine and see if they are up to having supper
with us tonight?”
“All right Mother.
I can tell Janine about the lovely dress I bought. At least she’ll appreciate good taste!” The
older Barkley brothers rolled their eyes and sighed knowing their sister would
never change. They followed the ladies
up the stairs depositing the packages in Audra’s room.
Heath had gone back to his room and was reading a dime
novel when Victoria opened the door.
“Heath, sweetheart, how are you feeling?” she checked his forehead for a
temperature. When finding it cool to
the touch he was rewarded with a smile, asking, “Do you want to come downstairs
for supper tonight?”
“Boy howdy, Mother, what a question! Of course I do! I’m
so tired of being stuck in this bed, I think I am growing roots.” When he threw
her a lopsided grin, Victoria couldn’t help but smile.
“And how is Janine today?” She stared at Heath intently.
“She is……” Heath started, then blushed. “Mother, how do you know these things?”
Victoria smiled and answered, “Heath I know you care for
her a great deal. There was no one to
stop you or her from seeing each other today.
And judging from that smile on your face that’s just what you did.” When
Heath could not deny her accusation, he just nodded.
“Now I know you are feeling okay. Get dressed and come downstairs. A change of scenery will do you both good!”
She left the room so he could get dressed in private.
Janine was lying in bed, thinking about Heath. She was in a daze about her feelings towards
him. She loved him that was true but
was she ready to marry him. The divorce
would be final in two months. She
enjoyed her freedom, but it was a lonely existence. No one to talk to when she came home, no one to cook meals
for. Yes, maybe she was ready for
marriage, and she would tell Heath so the next time he asked.
Boy howdy he will be surprised to hear a yes answer
instead of no! She was deep in thought when the door opened. Victoria came sweeping into the room,
sitting in the chair that was next to the bed.
“How are you feeling, dear?” She was concerned for the
girl lying in bed.
“I’m fine” Janine answered in a small voice.
“What’s wrong, Janine? Did something happen between you
and Heath today?” Janine looked at her in surprise. “Yes, dear, I know that you and Heath saw each other today, don’t
look so surprised. I’m surprised that
you lasted this long without seeing each other!” Victoria smiled at the
girl.
“Oh, Mrs. Barkley! I’m so confused. I love Heath so much. I want to marry him but I’m frightened.”
Janine stared up at Victoria with such a forlorn look, that Victoria took her
hand.
“I know Janine.
Its such a hard decision. But
look into your heart. Your heart will
always tell you what’s right and what’s wrong.
When you are with Heath, what do you feel?”
“I feel as if everything is going to be all right. I feel protected….” She started to say and
blushed. “I shouldn’t be talking to you
about this. But thank you Mrs. Barkley,
for the advice.”
“It’s all right, dear.
Talk to Heath. Tell him how you
feel. He will understand.” She gave
Janine an understanding smile. “How
about coming downstairs for supper and a change of scenery?”
“OH YES!” she covered her mouth with her hand saying a
little quieter, “yes I would like that very much.” Victoria grinned and left
the room.
Supper that night was a noisy affair. Audra was describing the trip to town right
down to the people they saw, not caring that no one was listening to her. Nick was trying to get a word in to Heath
about what was happening around the ranch.
Jarrod was trying to explain to Janine about his newest case and how it
was coming along.
Victoria watched all of this with wonderment in her
eyes. My children she thought. What a blessing this house brings us with a
wedding coming soon. You would be so
proud Tom. So proud of all your
children. She smiled at the scene
around the table and ate her supper savoring every minute.
After supper, they all adjoined in the billiard room for
drinks and conversation before bed.
Heath and Janine followed them in, each lost in their own thoughts. Heath took a drink and observed Janine while
she made conversation with the Barkley women.
Janine looked up from her conversation finding Heath observing her. With a nod of his head he motioned towards
the door. She nodded, excusing herself
from the conversation. She rose off the
sofa following her love out the door.
Eight pairs of eyes followed them as they left the room.
They walked purposely towards the barn. They stopped at the piled hay bales and sat
down. They clasped hands, not saying a
word to each other. They were enjoying
the fresh air after being cooped up for so long. Finally Janine broke the silence by quietly saying, “I feel so
comfortable being here. Its like I’ve
been here forever.” Heath moved closer to her, feeling her warmth and put his
arm around her shoulders. “Heath I
think we need to talk.”
The blond cowboy drew in his breath at that moment. He panicked, hoping what she wanted to talk
about wasn’t bad. He had a horrible
feeling in his stomach. “All right
Honey. What do we need to talk about?”
he asked, sounding more confident then he felt. Janine turned her body so she was facing him, grasping his hand.
“Heath, I love you very much” She searched his face,
looking for a way to explain her feelings to him. Heath clasped her hand tighter.
“I know you’ve asked me many times to marry you and I always gave you a
no answer. I’ve been frightened
Heath. Really frightened about what the
future holds for us. But sitting here,
holding your hand, you make me feel safe, warm and loved. I love you for that. I love how you make me laugh. I love the way you make me feel when I’m
near you. Heck Heath, if you ask me to
marry you again I may just say yes!” she added boldly. She looked down at her feet, feeling
embarrassed.
“Boy howdy Janey! I thought you were going to say
something else!” laughed a relieved Heath Barkley. He felt like the luckiest man alive.
Janine looked at him strangely and asked him, “What did
you think I was going to say?” She pulled her hand away and looked at him. “Heath, what did you think I was going to
say?”
Now it was Heath’s turn to be embarrassed. “ Honey, I thought things had changed. I thought you were going to tell me that you
didn’t want to marry me.” Janine boldly put her arms around his neck and drew
him closer to her.
“Oh honey. How
could you think that? I told you this afternoon I loved you. You silly goose!” She found his lips and
kissed him longingly. “I love you” she
whispered.
“I love you Janey.
For now and always!” They sat on the hay bales, kissing, hugging,
caressing when Janine suddenly pulled away.
“What’s wrong Janey? I didn’t go too far did I?” Janine almost burst out
laughing at the hurt look on his handsome face.
“No honey, you didn’t.
But I meant to tell you something.” She looked sheepishly at him. He looked at her patiently waiting for the
important information she had for him.
She pushed him away and stood up.
She grabbed his callused, masculine hand and pulled him up. “I want to tell you that, I will not say yes
to your proposal until you ask me properly with a ring and everything!” Heath
burst out laughing.
“Honey, you gotta quit doing that! You scare me.” He
grabbed her and planted a kiss on her cheek.
“You just wait my love, you just wait!”
A month later, Janine was at her cabin, getting ready for
the get together that Mrs. Harrison had planned in memory of her husband. She still felt a little guilty that such a
nice man was killed because of her but Heath had reassured her it wasn’t her
fault. She couldn’t have known that
Gary would be that vindictive and go after her.
Heath was to pick her up at seven. Janine was almost ready, just needed to put
her jewelry on. She was just putting on
her necklace when she heard a knock at the door. “Who is it?” she asked, knowing full well who was at the door.
“Open it up and you shall see” came the reply. She giggled opening the door. There was Heath on a bent knee holding a
box. “Will you marry me my pretty” He
looked so handsome looking up at her with his beautiful blue eyes and in his
Sunday best.
“Oh Heath” she said grabbing his hand. “You are so wonderful. Of course I’ll marry you!” She pulled him up
from his place on the stoop and kissed him.
“I love you”
“I love you Janine Marie MacGraw! You just made me the
happiest man in the world!” With that he placed the ring, made of gold with
four little diamonds surrounded by small sapphires, on her left ring finger and
kissed the inside of her hand. They
held each other outside the door when suddenly they realized where they were.
“Are you ready to go my pretty?” he asked looking deep
into her eyes.
“Yes Heath. Just
let me grab my wrap and we can go!” She threw on her wrap and went outside to
where Heath was waiting beside the buggy.
He helped her in then got in himself.
She smiled at him shyly as they drove towards the restaurant. She looked down at the ring that adorned her
finger.
Yep I’m the luckiest girl alive! She grinned and snuggled
closer to her fiancé.
