He looked to the east
Shading his eyes with his hand
He couldn’t see man or beast
Anywhere on the range land.
“Oh no” he thought sadly
“Where could they have gone?”
He thought of the hands badly
As he looked at the work undone.
Nick rode Coco with vigor and vim
As he thought about his brothers
Anger at his very brim
When he thought of the others.
He rode through thick and thin
Through the dry, dusty land
Thought he couldn’t win
As he shielded his eyes with his hand.
He found his men
Laying in the midday sun
He raised such a din
That the men retreated from their fun.
“Where have you been?”
He shouted with pain
“You’re the laziest I’ve ever seen”
The hands looked at him with disdain.
“We wanted to lay in the sun
While we ate our meal
Just to have some fun”
Nick felt like a heel
:Hell I’d like to have some fun
And join you in your glee.
May sit with you in the sun?”
The hands felt giddy and free.
“But you must remember this
This is a working ranch
It’s not mine nor his
But its our olive branch.”
“Everyone must pull his weight
And do their job
In this world you’re gonna be ate
And quit checking your watch fob.”
Everyone was quiet
As their boss spoke
No one caused a riot
As they rolled a smoke.
They knew he was right
And they wouldn’t forget his words
They would still anger and fight
Away they flew like summer birds
Nick watched his men with glee
As they worked in Barkley Land
The land set them free
And that was grand!
