He was out on the range searching for stray cattle.  It was almost round up time, a busy time of the year for the Barkleys.  Then they would go on the annual drive to the auction in Fresno.  It was a long drive, about three weeks and Heath wasn’t sure if he wanted to go this time.  He had other things on his mind.

It's been almost six months since we met, he reflected.  He thought of the changes his life took since he came to the Barkleys six years ago.  When he first came, he was angry at the world.  His beloved mother had just passed away leaving him only with memories and her Bible.  He had looked in the Bible when a newspaper clipping fell out of it.  Wondering why it was there, he had asked Aunt Rachel about it.  Aunt Rachel told him about Tom Barkley being his father but didn’t understand why Leah hadn’t told Heath about his heritage.  Rachel had pleaded with her to tell Tom but Leah had her pride.  Leah didn’t want to wreck his marriage and kept the pregnancy to herself.  Heath had taken off after this, determined to have a name and a heritage but what he got was totally unexpected.

Heath shook his blond head and galloped off toward a cow that he had spotted in the bush.  He absentmindedly threw the lasso around the cow’s neck and saw to it that it was back near the herd.  His mind wandered as he rode through the back country.  I have a family, he reflected again.  A family, a name and a heritage for my children.  What more could a man ask for? He smiled as he thought of Janine, his fiancée.  The strawberry blonde was uppermost in his thoughts.  They had known each other for six months now.  She was married when they first met but it wasn’t a happy marriage.  Her husband was an abusive man threatening to destroy her very existence.  But as fate would have it, they met at Harry’s saloon and couldn’t keep their eyes off of each other.  She obtained a divorce then fell in love with him.  ME, he thought and sighed.  Life was treating him well now.

Heath met up with Nick and discussed plans for the roundup.  It would take two days of hard work to round up the five hundred head of cattle they had.  It would be two very long days with long hours.  This was part of a rancher’s life.  Hard work and long days.  A part of his life that Janine had no idea what it was like.  He would have to explain this to her as well as his past.  She needed to understand what it was like to be married to someone like him.

The brothers rode up to the ranch, exhausted and dirty.  When they walked in the door they were greeted by Victoria, the silver haired matriarch of the family.  “Nick! Heath!” she greeted them as she kissed each on the cheek.

“I get the tub first!” exclaimed Nick.  He was always first when it came to the tub but Heath wasn’t going to let him this time.

“No you’re not, big brother! I’ve a date tonight and I need the tub!” Heath pushed his way past Nick and ran up the stairs, two at a time.  Nick just stood there, dumbfounded.

“What just happened?” he asked, shaking his head.

“I think, Nicholas, that means you have to wait your turn.” Victoria guided him into the parlor to have a drink, while he waited for the tub.

Heath came down a half hour later, refreshed.  He kissed Victoria on the cheek and told her, “I’m going to town to see Janine.  We have a supper date.” As he was telling her all this he was walking towards the door.  “Don’t wait up for me Mother.  May be a little late, we have weddin’ plans to discuss!” Victoria grinned as Heath bounded out the door.

Heath jumped on Charger, his trusty steed, and headed off towards Stockton.  His thoughts once again turned towards Janine.

Boy howdy, she’s something! He smiled at the thought of coming home to her everyday.  He pushed Charger faster, wanting to get to her a little faster.

Janine was preparing their first supper and she was nervous.  She prepared roast duck with dressing, potatoes, creamed carrots and peas.  There were fresh rolls as well as pickles, cranberries, and salad.  She set the table with a lace tablecloth she had, put two candelabras on it.  She set the plates and silverware around the table.

It looks wonderful, she thought.  But somethin’ isn’t right.  What could it be? Oh darn, I forgot to put candles in the candelabras! She opened all the drawers looking for candles.  Finally she found some and lit them.  There that looks better!

She was stirring the creamed peas and carrots when there was a knock on the door.  She had to stop herself from running to the door and throwing it open.  “Who is it?” she asked even though she knew who it was.

She smiled when she heard, “It’s Heath Barkley, ma’am” She opened the door and there he stood, grinning, waiting for her to invite him in.  “Well aren’t ya goin’ to let me in, my pretty?”

“Oh my…yes…gee whiz…come in!” She opened the door wider and let him in.  He took in the view before him.  Janine was dressed in the most beautiful dress he had ever seen.  It was green with a gold belt with golden lace down the front, around the collar and the cuffs of her shirt.  Her strawberry blonde hair was put up in a high bun, with some hanging down the sides by her ears.  She had on a cameo necklace.  It was all that Heath could do not to stare at her.  She looked beautiful.

“Ya wanna cup of coffee?” she asked quietly noticing that he was staring at her.  “What? Is there somethin’ wrong with the way I look?” She grinned at him.  He turned red and looked at his feet.

“Ya look beautiful!” He managed to say.  “I’d love a cup of coffee.” Janine brought him the coffee at the sofa.  She sat next to him and grasped his hand.

“Supper’ll be ready in a few minutes.  I hope ya like roast duck.” Heath held her hand, smiling his lopsided smile.

“My favorite! How ya doing Janey? Its been a spell since we saw each other.” Heath sipped at his coffee, watching her.

“Well…let me see.  I’ve been workin’ lots at the restaurant.  Mrs. Harrison is doin’ a great job runnin’ it.  I think she’s more efficient than her husband!” she chuckled at the memory of Mrs Harrison bustling around the restaurant.  The restaurant was thriving thanks to the industrious serving girls.  “I’ll be right back.  I have to check the food.  Excuse me.”

She rose from the sofa and sauntered over to the stove.  She took the food and put it in serving dishes.  She set it on the table.  “Come eat, Heath.  Supper is served!” Heath set his cup on the table and pulled the chair out for Janine.  “Thank you,” she said quietly.

Heath sat down and observed the table.  “Boy howdy, Janey, this looks delicious!” He ate his meal ravenously.  Janine ate her meal observing Heath as he ate.  “ Its been busy at the ranch the last week.  Startin’ roundup soon.  Long days.”

Janine glanced at Heath.  “Roundup? Right, the cattle.” She felt embarrassed, she knew very little about cattle and ranching.  Well it seemed like a good time to ask questions about it.  “How many cattle ya have to round up?” she asked tentatively.

“About five hundred head.  Then we have to drive them to Fresno for the auction.  That takes about three weeks.” Heath watched her face as he made this announcement.  “I know its a long time to be away but its part of my job.” They had finished the meal and Janine got up to clear the table.  Heath got up to help her by taking his dishes to the sink.  “I’ll help with the dishes Janey.  No sense in ya doin’ this alone.” He got up and set the water to warm on the stove so it would be warm for the dishes.

After the table was cleared and the dishes were done, they settled down once again on the sofa.  Heath put his arm on the back of the couch while Janine sat back.  He laid his arm across her shoulders and pulled her closer.  This feels so nice, he thought happily.  Janine turned her face to look at him.  He put his coffee down on the coffee table and took Janine’s cup as well.  He looked deep into her eyes and kissed her.  “Yer so beautiful tonight Janey.”

“Thanks Heath.  I picked out this dress with ya in mind.” She smiled shyly at him and put her arms around his neck.  They kissed for a while longer, passions growing stronger for both of them.  “We need to talk about setting the weddin’ date, Heath.” She said suddenly.  “I think that’s why I invited ya here.” she giggled mischievously.

“Yer a wicked woman.  Ya know that?” They giggled and kissed again.  “Hmmmm…about that weddin’ date.  How’s tomorrow sound?”

Janine slapped him on the arm.  “Ya rascal.  Ya know we can’t get married tomorrow.  I need to get my dress altered, get a minister.” Heath smiled his lopsided smile as she was describing all the things that needed to be done.

“Boy howdy, ya sound just like Audra! I knew all that.  I was just teasin’ ya!” Heath chuckled then said, “We need to get married fairly soon don’t ya think?” Heath kissed her again, passionately, leaving Janine breathless.

“Yes Heath.  Soon.  How ‘bout next month? On the 25th.  That way we’ve time to do all the stuff we need to do and ya can go on that cattle drive.” Heath nodded, gathering her in his muscular arms.  “I already have my dress picked out.  It’s not white, but its a wedding dress all the same.  It’s going to take about three weeks of fittings to have it ready.” She snuggled closer.  “I can’t wait, my love.  I just can’t wait!”

Heath thought about all the things he needed to do.  He should tell her about things in his past that may affect their future.  Things that weren’t pleasant.  About the stigma of growing up without a father, about Carterson, things that needed saying.  Heath shook his head and pulled her closer.

Janine was having similar thoughts.  She had a past that needed airing.  Things that could affect their future.  Things that weren’t pleasant.  Things like how they arrived in California.  How she was really treated by her former husband.  She welcomed Heath’s arms around her, sighing to herself.

Heath sat up, pulling her with him.  “Well, my pretty, it’s gettin’ late.  I should be going home.” She drew his head down to hers, kissing him passionately.  “Boy howdy, Janey!” He grinned at her then rose off the couch.  “I’ll see ya soon.  Will ya be out at the ranch on Sunday?” Janine nodded, then walked him to the door.  They kissed each other once more.  Heath smiled his lopsided smile at her.  She watched as he lit onto Charger.  He waved at her as he rode past, feeling a little sad that he had to leave.  Nope, I can’t wait.  I just can’t wait!

Janine shut the door and looked around her little place.  So many decisions, so little time! She thought.  Well Audra and Mrs Barkley will help with the planning.  I have my dress picked out.  Just need to get to the dressmakers and get it fitted.  She sighed.  Next month! Then she grinned.  It will be heaven!

The next morning Janine got herself up at her usual time to get ready for work.  While she was lighting the cook stove to make herself some coffee and breakfast, she was thinking about her past.  She was only fifteen when she married her first husband.  She thought she was in love and told her parents that when they had decided to get married.  Her parents were against the marriage.  Gary was ten years older then her, they told her.  So what! she had said.  I’m gettin’ married and you can’t stop me! She had yelled at them.  They told her that they wouldn’t sign any papers for her since she was underage.  Janine fought the tears that had threatened to fall.  I don’t care she had retorted, we will go somewhere where they will marry us! They then tried another tactic.  If you marry that man, you will no longer be apart of this family and you will inherit nothing, her father told her sternly.  I don’t care! She ran off into Gary’s arms and they were married.

The tears threatened to fall as she thought of this.  She wanted her parents at this wedding.  She wanted to tell them she was sorry for the trouble she caused.  Being the only child, she was spoiled.  She had lived in New York all her life at that point.  Growing up in the civilized part of the country had its advantages.  There was law and order everywhere.  There were theatres, restaurants, people.  There was so much of everything.  When she married Gary, he was tired of the hubbub of the city.  He wanted the wide open spaces of the west.  He wanted adventure.  Janine didn’t want to leave the comforts of the only place she knew.  Her place was with her husband, she knew, so she followed him out west.

She pushed the thoughts away as she was eating her breakfast.  The tears were close to the surface as she thought of her parents.  She desperately missed them.  She decided to write them a letter after work and mail it first thing in the morning.  Having made this decision, she felt better.  Her breakfast eaten, she put her dishes in the sink and went to get dressed.  It was almost time to get to work.

Heath was eating breakfast, listening to Audra tell of her plans for the day.  He was glad that he didn’t have to say much as he was thinking of the night before.  He looked up from his breakfast of ham and eggs, and saw that Victoria was watching him.  He gave her a lopsided grin and winked.

“So did you two get a date set, Heath?” Heath nodded and continued eating.

“Well, when is it?” Audra demanded finally taking a break from her chattering.  Heath kept on chewing, not saying a word.

Nick came rushing into the dining room, grabbing his breakfast and coffee then sat down at the table.  Jarrod came soon afterwards, a little more slowly, and grabbed a coffee.

“Heath are you going to tell us or not? He pushed his food around his plate and looked up.

“Tell us what?” demanded Nick who was wolfing down his breakfast.

“Heath and Janine set the wedding date, and is trying to annoy us by not telling us!” Audra whined to Nick.  Jarrod glanced at his mother who was trying not to smile.

“Okay.  I’ll tell ya.  Its next month on the 25th.” Heath blushed and went back to eating.  They all congratulated him, “thanks” was all he said.  He had a lot on his mind, wondering how he was going to tell Janine about himself and his past.

“Well gotta run, Mother.  This is a working ranch ya know! Can’t be dilly dallying around all day.  Come on Heath!” Nick threw down his napkin and rushed out of the room.

“Well I guess that’s my cue Mother.” Heath threw everyone his lopsided smile, gave Victoria a kiss on the cheek and exited the room as well.

Victoria smiled as she watched Heath follow Nick out of the room.  A lot has changed over the last six years between the two of them.  Best friends, partners and brothers all rolled into one.  Yes, Tom, you would be proud of this family, she thought as she finished her breakfast.  Jarrod and Audra glanced at their mother having similar thoughts about their brothers.

At lunch time, Janine took her hour off and sat in a quiet corner of the restaurant.  It was a long day so far, with lots of patrons.  She loved the atmosphere there, from the people she worked with and the ones that frequented the restaurant.  She had a few favorites that came in every day, like Mrs. Dimwoodie who always had a kind word to all the serving girls.  Mr. Humphries, an older man who just wanted company, and loved to tease.  There was Jarrod Barkley who often brought in his clients for a business meeting or came in by himself.  Janine loved all the regulars and it showed.  She always had a smile on her face when the customers came in and spoke kindly to them even when she was in the most horrible mood.

The first days after the murder of Mr. Harrison were the hardest but his wife put on a brave face.  She told all the serving girls that is what her husband would have wanted.  So they all put on their best fronts and served the public.  Janine was thinking of all of this while she ate her lunch.

I’d hate to give this all up when we get married.  I’d miss it a lot.  I guess its something I need to discuss with him as well.  Her thoughts turned to her beloved cowboy.  She thought of his expressive eyes, his muscular body, his passion for the ranch that he loved so much.  She knew that he wouldn’t leave the ranch for anything and she wouldn’t ask him too.  It’s a part of his livelihood.  She would have to learn to love the land as he did.

All too soon the hour was over and she had to go back to work.  She put on her apron and went to serve Mr. Humphries, one of her favorite customers.  The day was finally over and she had to go home.  Yes, I’ll miss this, she thought as she was cleaning up.

It was getting late, when the two cowboy brothers decided to call it a day.  The sun was making its last journey across the sky before setting down behind the rocky mountain.  Rounding up cattle had been hard, satisfying work.  But at least it was almost done.  Heath still wasn’t sure about going on the cattle drive, three weeks was a long time to be away from the one you love.

The love of a beautiful woman, he never thought he would feel it.  He felt like the luckiest man alive having a woman like Janine MacGraw love him.  He thought about coming home to her every night, lying with her in his arms, helping her with anything she needed help with.  Sharing his life with her.  What a wonderful feeling.  But there was still the feeling of insecurity.  She didn’t know that he was illegitimate.  She didn’t know about how he suffered nightmares about that hell hole of a prison he was in.  There was still a lot he didn’t know about her.

As they rode closer to the ranch house, Nick was talking about the upcoming drive.  How many hands will they need? Which route they should take? Where should they camp? Nick looked at Heath while he was talking because he was being quieter then usual.  “Hey Boy! Are you even listenin’ to me?” He inquired in his usual gruff way.

Heath was lost in thought.  Should I go on the drive? What will I do while everyone is gone? There was a lot to do on the ranch, things that couldn’t be done while the ranch was in full swing.  There were horses to break.  Yes, he could keep himself busy but it would be so quiet.  Suddenly, he realized Nick had asked him a question.  “Sorry Nick.  What did ya say?”

“My God, Heath! You were a million miles away.  That woman done got ya good, I say!” Nick teased him.  He was rewarded with that lopsided smile and they kept riding.  “What’s wrong? Ya been awful quiet lately.  More quiet then usual.”

“What makes you think anythin’ is wrong? Everythin’ is fine.  Just have a lot on my mind with the weddin’ comin’ soon.” Heath was lost in thought again.  I can’t wait for the weddin’.  Nick smiled knowing his brother was counting the days till he was married.

Janine was walking home from work, thinking about the letter she was about to write to her parents.  This is goin’ to be tough, she mused.  But I really want them here.

She walked in the door, lit the cook stove to make some coffee.  She sat on the sofa, took off her work shoes and put her feet up on the coffee table.  She sauntered over to the stove to pour herself a coffee when there was a knock at the door.  “Who is it?” She was so tired and in no mood for company at that moment.

“Its me, Heath!” came the reply.  Ecstatic, she threw open the door and invited him in.

“What are ya doing here? Ya weren’t supposed to be here ‘til Sunday.  Its only Wednesday” she accused.  “But I’m glad you are here!” She hugged him tightly.  Heath gathered her in his arms, not saying a word.  “Want a cup of coffee?”

“Boy howdy, that sounds fine.  Did you just get home?” She went to the stove to get another cup of coffee and joined him on the sofa.

“Yeah I did.  I was just relaxin’ and havin’ a cup of coffee.  Thinkin’ about writin’ a letter” she said casually.  “Ya never answered my question, Heath”

“I missed ya.” He stated simply.

“I missed you too, honey.” She answered in return.  “I’m goin’ to write a letter to my parents, Heath.  Goin’ to invite them to our wedding.” Heath searched her face to see if she was serious.  “I’m serious, Heath.  I’ve been thinking ‘bout this for a while.”

Heath was impressed.  He hoped that things worked out between her and her parents.  “That’s a good idea Janey! I would love to meet them.”

Janey examined his face, searching for the reason he was here.  It wasn’t just because he missed her.  That was part of it but there was another reason.  She could feel it.  “Heath, why are ya really here? I know its not just because ya missed me.”

“Janey, I love ya so much.  I don’t want to hurt ya ever.” He looked at her with misery in his eyes.  “I’m not the man ya think I am.” He stated with sadness in his voice.  Janine could only stare at him.

She took his face in his hands and scolded him, “Don’t ya ever say that to me again Heath Barkley!” She cried out, “You’re more man than any man I’ve ever known.” She spoke more softly and asked him, “What’s wrong? Tell me.” She put her arms around his neck and hugged him tightly.  His strong muscular arms went around her waist as she sat on his lap.  His body shook as he thought of what he was about to tell her.  He nuzzled his face into her neck and she could feel the wetness from his eyes.  She gently pulled away, concerned that something was really wrong.  “Heath, honey, what’s the matter? No matter what it is, tell me.  That’s what I’m here for.  We need to be here for each other, good or bad.” Heath couldn’t speak for a bit, he wasn’t prepared for the emotional upheaval he was feeling at that moment.  He just pulled her closer, and kissed her lips.  He kept kissing her on her lips, her cheek, her ear and whispered her name.

Janine kept hugging him not wanting to let go.  Heath was making her feel dizzy with all the kisses.  He was trailing them down her neck now and across the open part of her dress.  Janine just pulled him closer, it felt so good to be kissed like that.  It made her tremble, her heart beat faster.  Heath wanted, no needed, her and she was willing to provide.  But she had to find out what was bothering him.  “Heath” she said breathlessly, “Heath” she said again, a little louder.  He stopped what he was doing and stared at her.

“Oh Janey!” he moaned, “I’m sorry.  I forgot myself” He buried his face in her neck.  Janine pulled away and stared into his blue eyes, getting lost in them.

“What’s wrong with ya tonight? Ya seem so sad.  Like you’ve lost your best friend.” Heath looked at her imploringly, took a drink of his now cold coffee and didn’t say anything.  “Heath Barkley.  Ya had better tell me what’s going on with you or I’m going to be very angry with you!”

Heath opened his mouth to speak but he couldn’t say what he wanted.  It was just too hard.  “Oh Janey!” he moaned again.  “I just don’t want to hurt ya.  There are some things about my past ya need to know.” His body shook knowing that what he was about to tell her was going to change their relationship.  Whether it was for the good or the bad, he didn’t know.

She didn’t know what to think.  What could be so bad that it could reduce him to tears, she puzzled over it in her mind.  She hugged him and said gently, “Heath, whatever it is, please tell me.  I want to help ya.”

Heath trembled slightly and began his story.  He told her about being born in a small mining town called Strawberry.  He told her that he was born illegitimate, about being a bastard.  He told her about working at the age of six in the mines as an explosive setter.  He told her about all the misery he suffered by being who he was.  He told her about his aunt and uncle and how they used to beat him, making his and his mama’s life a living hell.  He told her everything….Everything but Carterson.  He would tell her about that another day.

Janine took it all in and held his hand while he told his story.  He was stony faced when he talked to her, never looking at her.  She understood the misery.  She understood him now, better then she ever did and she told him so when he was done telling his story.  “Heath you’re by far the bravest man I have ever known.  Bravery comes in many forms.  There is bravery for saving people’s lives, there is bravery in fighting for one’s beliefs.  Your kind of bravery is one of survival.  And I am proud to know ya and love ya.  To hell with everyone else.  They don’t know ya.  They just made a label and used it to hurt ya.  I’m sorry ya had to live through it and still are.  But together you and I are going to battle it.  We’ll face the world and show them what a brave man you are!” Janine hugged him fiercely.  She said quietly, “tell me about your mama.  She must have been quite a lady!”

Heath looked at her incredulously.  This is some woman, he mused.  Thinking he was brave.  He was no where near brave.  He felt like a coward.  So he told her of his beloved mama.  How she sacrificed so much to raise him.  How she worked late nights and days.  How Aunt Rachel and Hannah loved him and helped raise him.  He told of the many nights when they had barely any food to eat.  His mama was a good and kind woman.  He told of how people scorned her because she had a child born out of wedlock.  He told of how she used to tell him to hold his head high and be proud of who he was, because nobody but nobody can take his pride away.

Heath was finished telling his story for now and felt a lot better.  He had been so worried about what she was going to say.  He was worried that she was going to leave him.  He searched her face for some clues as to how she was feeling about all of this.  He looked into her eyes and couldn’t believe what he saw.  Love.  Pure and simple love.  He couldn’t believe his luck.

He hugged her tightly and kissed her again.  Janine was so happy that he had shared a piece of his past with him.  What a burden it must be to live with that she reflected.  She kissed him passionately as he parted her lips with his tongue, wanting more of her.  She opened her mouth and let him savor her taste.  He trailed kisses across her cheek, by her ear and down her neck.  His hands were wandering, feeling her back and she moaned at the sensations he was causing.  Their kisses got more passionate, more urgent till Heath stopped and looked at her.  “I’m sorry honey,” he said breathlessly.  She couldn’t open her eyes.  She was still feeling the sensations he caused within her being.

“Don’t be sorry, Heath.” she replied in kind.  She was sorry he stopped but knew that they had almost gone too far.  “Thank ya for telling me about some of your past.  I want ya to know that no matter what anyone says or anyone does to ya or to me, I will stand by ya.  They don’t know ya like I know ya.  I love ya Heath Barkley.  Don’t you ever forget that!” She kissed him again.  Looking deep into his eyes, she saw the love in his eyes meant only for her.  She felt truly blessed.

“Are you sure you still want to marry me, knowing what people are going to say? Knowing that people are making fun of you?”

“If I listened to every piece of gossip about me and believed it I would be old before my time,” Janine remarked.  “Do you think I am without ridicule? Look at me! I was a divorced woman, now a widow.  I know there are rumours about me and you flying all through town.  Haven’t ya heard them?” Heath shook his head.  “Well there are.  There will always be rumours and people bad mouthing others all the time.  We mustn’t pay attention to it Heath.  We won’t.  We will live our lives the way we were meant to and to hell with anyone else!”

Heath just stared at her, unbelieving and when he found his voice again, he said simply, “I love ya Janine Marie McGraw.  You are the most remarkable woman I’ve ever met!” He kissed her again and again till she was breathless.

“I love ya too, Heath Barkley! Was that all that was buggin’ ya tonight?” she gently teased him, running her fingers through his sandy blond hair.  Heath could only nod because of the sensations she was causing.  She smiled at him and remarked, “Well, Mr. Barkley, I think its getting rather late, and if I’m not mistaken, you should be going home soon!”

He got up off the sofa, feeling a whole lot better then when he arrived a few hours earlier, stated, “Yes, Janey, my pretty, I do have another pretty long day tomorrow.  I’m so glad I stopped by here tonight.  I feel better now.” He took her hand and walked to the door.  “You write that letter to your parents and let’s see what they say okay?” Janine nodded.  “Thanks for tonight.  If I haven’t told you before, I love you more now then ever before.”

She grinned and said “That’s because I’m perfect!” She winked before hugging him and giving him another passionate kiss.  “Thanks for coming over tonight.  I was feeling a little apprehensive about writing this letter.  But ya made me feel better.  I have a few things I want to tell ya about my past as well, but it can wait for another night.” Heath nodded.  He opened the door, hating to leave her all alone once again.  “I don’t want ya to go Heath, but ya must.  It’s too dangerous for ya to stay.  It won’t be long before we’re married then we won’t have to worry about anybody!”

Heath grinned, stalling for time.  He didn’t want to leave either, but the time had come and he must.  He grabbed her, holding her tight.  “I’ll see ya soon, my pretty,” he whispered in her ear.  They kissed one last time then he walked out into the darkness.  She watched him go as long as she dared, then closed and bolted the door.  She stood against the door, and thought about the evening.  What a wonderful evening it was.  Now she had to write that letter.  A task that no longer could be put off.

Dear Mama and Pappa

I am writing this letter to tell you that I am fine and doing well.  I am in Stockton, California now.  I have lots to tell you but for now I just wanted to tell you that I am sorry for all the pain I have caused you.  I know now that you were right about me getting married so young.  But how can you tell a 15 year old spoiled girl that she was making the biggest mistake of her life.  Well you tryed and I didn’t listen and I payed the price.  My husband of 10 years died tragickly this year.  I have since met a wonderful and man and will be marryed on September 25, 1882.  We would like it very much if you could come to our wedding.  Please.  It would a mean a lot to us.  Let me know if you intend to come by telegraph or write me a letter if you are not.  Thank you.

Your loving daughter,

Janine Marie

She read the letter over and over.  It just wasn’t enough to write.  She wanted to see them face to face and explain her actions.  Finally she folded it and placed it in the envelope.  She addressed the letter and sealed it.  She placed it on the table so that she would remember to mail it in the morning.  She looked at the sealed once more and blew out the lamp.  Time for bed.  It had been an emotional evening.  She fell asleep almost instantly, her blond cowboy uppermost in her mind, and a smile on her lips.

After Heath unsaddled Charger and curried him, he went into the house.  All was quiet, but he reached for a drink and thought about the events of the night.  He felt a whole lot better about a lot of things.  He grinned when he thought about how Janine decided they were going to take on the world.  He finished his drink and went to his room.  He took off his shirt, laying it at the end of his bed.  Next he took his gun belt and belt off laying them on the chair.  He laid on the bed, falling asleep almost instantly with a certain strawberry blonde woman in his thoughts and a smile upon his lips.

Sunday was a day of rest for both Heath and Janine.  It was a long week, with him working long hours on the ranch and her working long hours at the restaurant.  They had planned for this day to have a picnic and enjoy the day together.  Janine was looking forward to it.  Heath was to pick her up for church then they were going for a picnic from there.  What a lovely day it was, she reflected.  After changing into her Sunday clothes, she settled herself on the sofa, drinking a cup of coffee.

She rose from the couch when she heard the familiar knock on the door.  Heath walked in and took her arm.  “Ready my pretty?” He inquired of her.  She nodded as she grabbed her wrap and the picnic basket she had packed earlier that morning.  Heath helped her into the carriage and got in himself.  He took the reins, flicking them against the horses.  He expertly guided them to the church, parked the carriage and helped Janine out.  Church felt really long today.  They sat attentively with the rest of the Barkleys but their thoughts were on anything but Church.  They sang the well known hymns, her voice sounding like an angel thought Heath.  They listened to the long winded sermon and were very glad when it was over.  They walked out of the church with the rest of the family and stopped to talk to them.

“You will come for supper, Janine, won’t you?” asked Victoria.

“Yes ma’am” she answered back.  “I’d love to .” Heath was talking to his brothers about the ranch.  She grasped his hand and listened to the conversation trying to learn anything about her future husband’s profession.  Victoria nodded and took hold of Audra’s arm.  She guided the younger girl to the wagon and got in.  The two dark haired brothers saw them in the wagon, said their good-byes to the couple and followed the wagon towards the massive Barkley ranch.

The couple got into their carriage and went off to their favorite spot on the ranch.  A beautiful grassy spot by the river.  Shaded by large willow trees, it was the perfect spot for a picnic.  Heath helped her out of the carriage, grabbed the picnic basket, guiding Janine to their spot.  It was so quiet.  “I forgot the blanket in the carriage,” said Janine.

“Don’t worry, I’ll get it” Heath went back, grabbing the blanket out of the back.  He sauntered back and spread the blanket on the ground.  “There you go Janey.  You can sit down now milady.” He bowed to her and sat down next to her.  “Boy howdy I’m hungry” he licked his lips and looked inside the basket.

“I’ll take it out, thank you very much.” She said mockingly.  She took the napkins out, fried chicken, sandwiches, a bottle of wine, pieces of chocolate cake, and apples.  She took out the glasses she brought and Heath poured the wine.  Heath ate heartily and when he was done, he laid back with his arms behind his head.

Janine picked up the leftover food and put it all back into the basket.  She gave Heath his glass of wine, picked up her glass and toasted “here’s to us!” He smiled and hugged her.  They sat with their arms around each other when Janine said “I want to share part of my life with you.  I am a little scared to mention Gary’s name.  I hate what he did to me but I did love him at one time and we did share some good times.  But I need you to understand me and why I act the way I do.” Heath hugged her tightly signifying that no matter what she had to say, it wouldn’t change his feelings for her.

“I grew up in New York City.  Yes I am a city girl!” She grinned at Heath, “You’d never know it would ya?” He nodded, smiling lopsidedly at her.  He was trying to picture her as a little rich girl.  “I was extremely spoiled.  I never wanted for anythin’.  I have no brothers or sisters so my parents doted on me.” Heath could see that.  “My parents had this idea that I needed to be a young lady, so they sent me to an all girls school where they taught sophistication to spoiled brats like me.  I stayed there all the school year, coming home only on weekends and holidays.  Pretty soon it was only holidays.  I was about twelve when they sent me to this school.  I was a rotten kid, I admit it now, always playin’ practical jokes on the teachers and other students.  Some of the jokes were quite funny, other times they were just plain mean.  When I was fourteen they expelled me and sent me home.  I was just too much for them.  My parents were really angry at me and sent me to another girls school, where I could learn manners becoming of a young lady.”

Janine stopped, taking a drink of her wine, and snuggled closer to Heath.  “I always thought there was something la-de-da about you my pretty” Heath teased.  Janine smiled at him over her glass.

“Well, this school was no better, “ she continued and smiled to herself remembering.  “It was at this school I met Gary.  There was a dance at the local dance hall off campus.  We had a curfew of nine o’clock.  But this night some girls and I sneaked out to go to this dance.  There were men of all ages there, more then we had ever seen in one place.  There was one man in particular that struck me.  He was a large dark haired man who was making his rounds with all the ladies.  He stopped at me and introduced himself as Gary MacGraw of the Quick Draw MacGraw fame.  Well that did it.  I was in love right then and there.  We danced every dance that was left and he took me home.  He was a gentlemen, didn’t even try to kiss me goodnight.” She took a breath and a drink, thinking of how to proceed with the rest of her story.

“We got back to the school very late past midnight.  Of course the doors were secured, no one could get in or out.  I didn’t know what to do.  I banged on my window; it was on the ground floor, trying to get someone up to let me in.  Eventually my room mate opened the window and I got in.  No one found out about that escapade.  I sneaked out a lot to meet Gary, no one was even the wiser.  Till one night a few months later.  I was knockin’ at the window as usual, and it opened.  Who was at the window but the head mistress.  She was angry.  She told me to go to the front door and she would let me in.  Well I did that.  a little reluctantly, I might add, not knowing what the consequences were.  That night I was expelled again.  Well needless to say my parents were not impressed.  They read me the riot act.  They didn’t know what they were going to do with me.  I told them I didn’t care.  I was not goin’ back to no boardin’ school.  I’d rather stay at home then go there.  They relented and let me stay home.  I still saw Gary every night, sneakin’ out and comin’ home at all hours.  Then Gary asked me to marry him.  I argued with my parents and they disinherited me if I decided to go through with it.  I told them I didn’t care and got married.” Tears came to her eyes, knowing now how much pain she put her parents through.

“The years with Gary were not good ones.  We loved each other, and we came to the decision to leave New York.  Gary wanted adventure, he wanted the wide open spaces of the west.  A lot of arguin’ went on between us and I guess that’s when his temper showed through.  He hit me that time but he was sorry about it then.  I believed him.  We took off the next day by train to St.  Louis.  From St.  Louis we bought a couple of horses and rode the rest of the way out here.  It was a long hard trip, and a lot of hardships on the way.  I won’t go into too many details, suffice to say Gary’s temper showed many times towards me.  I was unhappy, I wanted to go home but my place was with my husband.  We stopped at many places, army forts, and he started drinking heavier during these stops.  He made plays for younger girls and got into trouble for it.  So I decided to pay him back by seeing one army sergeant and that was a terrible mistake.  Gary was so angry when he found out that he had broken my arm, a few ribs and raped me that night.  That was the night I lost any love I had for him.  But he was my husband and I had to stay with him.”

Janine looked at Heath who had tears in his eyes.  She grabbed his hand and kissed it.  “It got worse after that.  I was always going to the town’s doctors because of some broken bone or needin’ some kind of stitchin’.  Those doctors must have thought I was the clumsiest person ever! I don’t know why I never left him but I was determined to let him lead me west.  I foolishly thought that things would change when we got there.  We finally arrived here after a year of riding.  I was never so glad to be anywhere in my life! We rode around the state, looking for the right place to settle.  We even went to New Mexico and Texas.  No place was good enough.  Finally after wandering around for the next seven years, we decided to settle down in California.  We went to San Francisco for a year then Stockton.  When you and I met in that saloon, I had made a decision that I wanted out of this marriage.  I stopped there to get a beer and there ya were.” Heath hugged her tighter, sorry that she had to go through all of that.  “That’s why I had to write that letter to my parents and invite them to our wedding.  I wanted to beg for their forgiveness and hopefully they’ll me back in their lives.  That’s what I’m hopin’”

They sat there for several minutes just holding each other.  “I know my life wasn’t quite as difficult as yours but I hope you understand me a little bit now and still love me.  I was really scared to tell you these details.  I’m a little scared of ya, did ya know that?” Heath shook his head no.  “Because of what Gary did to me, I’m scared of any man.  I’m scared that you’ll get mad at me and hit me.  I’m scared you will hurt me when it comes to bein’ intimate.  I’m hopin’ that in time it will get better.  But even certain actions ya do, like removing your hat, scratching your arm, putting your hands in your pockets, tend to make me jumpy.  I hope ya understand.”

“Janey, I understand, I’d never ever hurt ya.  I’m so sorry that you had to go through this but ya have no cause to be scared of me.” He hugged her so tight, never wanting to let go of this precious woman.  His future wife.  “I love ya Janine and nothing will ever change that.  But how ya stayed with that man for so long is beyond me.” He found her lips and kissed her passionately.  “Yer the most remarkable lady I’ve ever met.  I love ya more now then ever before.  You’ve more courage than anybody I have ever seen.  I am so proud of ya!”

Janine took strength in his words and kissed him.  “I love ya too Heath Barkley.  I’m so happy that I met ya.  You’re a brave man as well.  Well maybe we brave people should get ready to go soon and join your family for supper, since I was formally invited by your mother.” Heath nodded but wouldn’t relent his hold on her.  He was happy being near her and holding her.  He found her lips once again and left a trail of kisses from her lips to her ear.  Nibbling on her lobe, he whispered, “I don’t wanna go yet.” She put her arms around his neck and pulled him closer.  She ran her fingers through his hair and sighed.  The sensations he was causing was making her feel faint.  He moved down to her neck and across to the other side to her other ear.  He nibbled on that one for a bit and whispered her name.  Janine let out a small series of sighs, enjoying his playing.  She pulled him away and found his lips again.  She pushed open his lips with her tongue and savored his taste.  They kissed and caressed each other for a while till Janine pulled away.

“Let’s wait till we are married, Heath.  I am not innocent ya know that.  But I don’t want to spoil our love before we are married.  We have to make our wedding night special.” Heath looked at her with disappointment but he understood.  He would do nothing to hurt her.  He pulled her closer and kissed her once again till she was breathless.

“You’re right.  Let’s go back to the house and be with the family.  We have to decide where we’re goin’ to have the wedding.” Heath looked at her.  “Well where are we goin’ to have it? I was thinking at the ranch.”

“Oh Heath, that’s a great idea,” she said, “I’d like to have it in Mrs. Barkley’s rose garden.”

Heath nodded.  “I’ll talk to Mother about it.  I’m sure she won’t mind.” He stood up and grasped Janine’s hand.  “Let’s go.  We have to make plans with the family.  We don’t have much time” They strolled to the carriage, with the blanket and the picnic basket.  He put the items in the back and helped Janine into the carriage.  But not before he kissed her passionately.  He winked and smiled at her then climbed into the carriage..  He drove towards the house thinking of the wedding they were going to have.

Supper was a happy affair that night.  The betrothed couple told of their wedding plans while everyone nodded their heads in agreement.  They wanted a small wedding with just family and a few close friends in attendance.  Victoria would have liked a large wedding but abided by Heath and Janine’s wishes.  She knew that he didn’t like big affairs anyway.  “Will your parents be here Janine?” asked Audra innocently.

Janine glanced at Heath answering, “I don’t know Audra.  We had a fallin’ out years ago, and I’m not sure if I’m forgiven or not.  I wrote them a letter, so we’ll see soon.” She kept her eyes on her plate and pushed her food around, tears threatening to fall when she thought of her parents not being at her wedding.  Heath grasped her hand under the table and squeezed.  She glanced at him, throwing him a grateful smile.

After supper, they all adjoined to the billiard room for drinks.  Nick and Heath were discussing the upcoming cattle drive.  They were to leave in two days for the three weeks.  The couple had discussed this earlier but even though they hated to be separated for that length of time, it was part of his job and had to be done.  They weren’t happy about it but Heath had promised to send telegraphs when he could.

The men decided to play a game of pool while the women watched.  Janine kept a close eye on the game.  She loved pool, having played numerous times at different saloons.  None of the Barkleys knew this though.  Janine rose off the sofa and stood by Heath.  She casually asked if she could take a shot.

Heath glanced at her, nodding.  “Have you ever played before Janey?”

Janine scoffed at him, saying, “A little bit” She took the pool cue from Heath, and lined up the shot.  “ Eight ball, corner pocket” she announced.  The men watched with interest.  The shot seemed impossible, to make this shot would mean that Heath would win the game and their money.  To get the ball into the corner pocket as she wanted, the eight ball would have to bounce once against the side of the table before going into the corner.  Janine hit the white cue ball which in turn hit the black eight ball.  All the men’s mouths fell open.  The impossible shot was made, the eight ball rolled softly into the corner pocket just as she predicted.  “Thank you gentlemen, that was fun.  Maybe we can have a real game soon?” She grinned at the three men who were still gaping at the table, not believing what they saw.

Heath grinned and held out his hand, remarking, “I believe you each owe me five dollars.” The older brothers paid him.  Janine sat down again, smiling at the brothers then went back talking to the Barkley women as if nothing had happened.  She glanced over at the blond cowboy, and winked.  He smiled back.  This woman is full of surprises he mused.

Taking Janine home a little while later he asked her, “Just how often have ya played pool?” She just grinned at him and said nothing.  “Okay Janey, that was a pretty tough shot ya made, one that not every one can do.”

Chuckling she decided to tease him a little, “What? Ya mean ya couldn’t do that shot? Ya just line up the cue ball with the eight ball and hit it.  Isn’t that what you’re supposed to do?”

Heath was slightly amused.  He gave her a sidelong glance and smiled at her.  “Yes Honey that’s what you’re supposed to do.  But ya know what I think? I think yer better then yer letting on!”

“Tell ya what.  When we’re married, I’ll show ya how well I can play!” She snuggled closer to Heath savoring the closeness they shared.

Two days later, the cowhands and their bosses went on the cattle drive.  Janine wasn’t there to see them go as she and Heath said their good-byes two days earlier.  “I’ll send you a wire when we get to the first town.” He promised.  She missed him all ready.

She had wedding plans to think about.  She was ecstatic that everything was working out.  A few more trips to the dressmakers and the dress will be done.  It was a beautiful dress.  She didn’t want to have a white dress, having been married before but she chose a dress which was made of silk and off-white, with lace for the collar, sleeve cuffs and around the hem.  It had ivory buttons down the back and a short train.  The dressmaker told her that she looked breath taking wearing it and that the groom was a lucky man.  There was a veil that matched closely to the dress.  She was going to carry white carnations with red tea roses for her bouquet.

She was to talk to Victoria and Audra about the decorations.  They decided to have the wedding in the rose garden at the ranch and the wedding dinner in the house.  She sighed, thinking of all these details.  So much to do for one day.  But once its over, she smiled to herself, I’ll be Mrs. Heath Barkley!

When they all get back from the drive, there will be one week left for the wedding, she thought.  They hadn’t decided where to go for their honeymoon, but they had mentioned maybe two weeks just camping and trail riding.  It sounded like heaven in her eyes.  Anywhere her blond, blue-eyed cowboy wanted to go was fine with her!

A week later she went to the post office, there was no letter for her still.  She decided on an impulse to check the telegraph office.  She asked if any wires came in and she had four.  Heath! she thought, he must really miss me! She read the last one he sent and she sent a wire off to him at the next town they were to arrive in.  She thanked the telegrapher and paid for the wire she sent out.  She walked out of the office looking at the wires she received, smiling to herself.  She opened one and found that it was from New York.  Mama! She screamed.

Janine:

Received your letter.  stop We will be there on the 18th.  Stop Will talk about it when we arrive.  stop See you soon.  stop We will come by train stop.  Love Mama and Papa

Janine couldn’t believe it.  Mama and Papa actually coming to see her! She was so happy.  Maybe writing that letter wasn’t such a mistake after all.  She rushed home to read all of the wires that were sent.

The weeks passed by quickly, between working at the restaurant and the wedding preparations there was hardly any time for thinking.  She gave her notice at the restaurant.  They had discussed her working and decided that she wouldn’t go to work as it was too far for her to ride alone every day and night.  That was okay with her, she wanted to spend the time with her beloved after they were married.

Heath was distracted on the drive.  Nick had to cover for him many times and was getting more then a little upset with him.  “Heath!” bellowed Nick.  “Will you watch those cattle, they are starting to stray!” Heath shook his head to rid it of his thoughts, trying to stay focused on the task ahead of him.  It just wasn’t like him to be this distracted.

Well he does have a wedding coming up, pondered Nick, and that is one pretty gal.  I guess I would be distracted too if I was in his place.  Nick didn’t say anything when Heath stayed behind the herd.  He was used to Heath going off by himself to think things through and knew that he would talk to him when he had figured it out in his mind.

At camp that night, Heath was eating his meal by himself, not even listening to the hands talking about their day.  Nick sauntered over to him and plopped himself down.  “Hey boy, aren’t ya hungry?” Nick picked up Heath’s supper and gave it to him.

“Thanks Nick.  Just got a lot on my mind is all.” He accepted the plate of stew and ate.  “Nick,” Heath started.

“Yeah Heath?” Nick could see that Heath was struggling to tell him something.

“I love her very much.  She is a courageous woman, you know that?” Heath wanted something from Nick, but he wasn’t sure what, so the older brother just nodded.  “She came all the way across the country on horseback.  Stayed with that jack ass for 10 years, took all that abuse from him all the while loathing him.  You know why she stayed with him? Because she believed she was married for better or for worse.  She believed that she had to take that abuse because she was his wife.  Now she is scared of all men.  She is scared I’m gonna hurt her.  She says she trusts me but I can see the look in her eyes sometimes it scares me knowing what she’s thinking.  And there is me.  My heritage.  You know how people treat me because of my heritage.  How is she going to handle that? She says that it doesn’t matter, but it does, IT DOES!”

Nick looked at his younger brother.  This was the most he said in a long time.  He thought about what Heath had said, then simply asked, “Do you love her Heath? Do you really love her?” Heath nodded the affirmative.  “Well then that is all that really matters.  No matter what anyone says, or does to ya she’ll protect you.  Just the same as you’d do for her.  And if anyone says anything different, they’ll have to answer to me!” Nick was rewarded with that lopsided smile.  “Is that all that’s worryin’ ya, Boy?” Heath nodded slowly, there was more but it could wait.  He needed to talk to Janine, make sure things would be all right.  How he missed her.

The men were dusty, tired and relieved that they were finally back home.  Nick and Heath were busy doling out their pay plus bonuses for work well done.  They shook each man’s hand and told them to come back in the spring.  Winter was coming on so there wasn’t much work for them to do.  The two cowboy bosses could handle the winter chores on their own with just a couple of hands.

Heath was so busy doling out the pay that he didn’t see the feminine hand reach out for him.  He looked up and saw her standing there.  He took her in his arms and hugged her tightly.  He glanced at Nick and silently told him to take care of the pay.  Nick nodded at her and at Heath.  The older brother smiled to himself as he watched the couple stroll hand in hand towards the house.  He went back to paying the hands and congratulating them for a job well done.

They went into the house and Janine waited while Heath greeted his mother and sister.  He then announced he was going to clean up.  He took one look at her, then took the stairs two at a time.  In short order he was clean and descended down the stairs.  Janine was drinking tea, and talking wedding plans with her future in-laws.  He sat beside her on the sofa, listening while they described all the plans they had decided on while he was gone.  “Boy howdy, ladies, you are good!” He complimented them.  He took Janine’s a hand and asked if she wanted to go for a walk before supper.  She nodded and rose from the sofa bringing Heath with her.

They had a lot to talk about.  Janine went first and told him that her parents were arriving by train tomorrow.  It had been a long time since she had seen her parents.  He hugged her tightly and whispered that he was extremely happy.  “I’m glad mama and papa are coming early.  I’m nervous Heath.  What will I say to them? How will they react to you? Hehe.  They have no choice but to like you, you’re marrying me!” She chuckled nervously.  Heath held her and told her that it was going to be all right.  He would go with her to the train station to meet her parents.

They had walked behind the house to the rose garden.  This was the setting for their wedding next week.  The roses were blooming their last blooms for the season and it smelled lovely.  Heath stopped, picked a rose and handed it to her.  She thanked him then went into his arms once again.  He cupped his hand under her chin and kissed her passionately.  “I missed ya my pretty” he whispered into her ear.

“I missed ya too Heath.  I’m so glad you’re home!” She kissed him on his cheek and moved down to his neck.  She caressed his chest and welcomed his caresses back.  She looked up at him and giggled.  “Only a week to go Honey” she purred.  “Are ya nervous about the wedding?”

“No, I’m not.  Are you?” She shook her no and kissed him passionately.  “Boy howdy Janey! The way you make me feel! Yer a wicked woman, ya know that?”

She giggled “I think I’ve heard that somewhere before!” Heath kissed her then led her back towards the house.  “Where are we goin’ for our honeymoon? I have an idea if ya want to hear it.”

“Well we did talk about camping and trail riding.  Did ya still wanna do that?” He asked hesitantly.  Going to San Francisco or Sacramento wouldn’t be fun for him but he would do it if she wanted to.

“Yeah, I still want to do that.  I love camping and with ya it would be fun! I was thinking that I’d like to see Strawberry and go from there.  I want to see where ya grew up and meet Hannah , Aunt Rachel.”

Heath looked at her incredulously.  “Ya wanna see Strawberry?” He pondered this.  “Well, Janey, I have my reasons for not goin’ there, but truth is, I’d like to see Hannah and Aunt Rachel myself.  Okay we will put Strawberry on our travel list.” Heath opened the back door for her and entered the house.

Heath picked Janine up at her place the next day.  She was ready when he got there and leaped into the carriage.  “Boy howdy Janey!” I was just goin’ to help ya!” She grinned and gave him a kiss.

He drove over to the train station and parked.  The train wasn’t due for about fifteen minutes so they got out of the carriage and wandered around for a bit.  Heath went into the station to see if the train was on time.  He came outside searching for Janine and found her sitting on one of the benches.  He sat down beside her, his hat in his hand and told her that the train was due in at any moment.  She looked up at him with tears in her eyes.  She was frightened at the thought of seeing her parents.  Its been so long she thought.  Heath seemed to read her thoughts and grasped her hand.  She looked at him gratefully, holding his hand tightly.

They heard the train blow its horn in the distance.  Janine held Heath’s hand tightly, then he pulled her into an embrace.  “It’ll be okay Janey.  Trust me.  They made this trip to see you.  They really love you.” Janine took stock in what he said.  She smiled at him, gathered up her strength just as the iron beast came rolling in.

She searched all the people departing the train.  She didn’t spot them at first then she saw an older couple spanning the crowd to find their daughter.  Janine stood rooted to the spot, unable to move at first.  Heath gently pushed her forward, and then moved towards them.

“Mama? Papa?” she asked the older couple.  They eyed the girl and the cowboy when recognition set in.  They outstretched their arms and welcomed her in.  Janine burst into tears.  “I’m so glad you came! I was so worried you changed your mind.”

Marjorie and Charles Greene were taken aback at their daughter.  She had changed so much since she left home so many years ago.  She matured and grew into a lovely young lady thought Charles, she looks so much like her mother.  Marjorie had similar thoughts.

Janine pulled back out of her parents warm hugs and stepped back to Heath.  “Mama, Papa, this is the man I’m going to marry.  Heath Barkley.  Heath, these are my parents, Charles and Marjorie Greene.”

Heath stuck his large, callused hand out to Charles.  Charles took it and shook.  You can always tell what type of a person is by their handshakes.  Heath’s was firm and friendly.  His callused hands told that he was a hard worker.  Charles was impressed and warmed to Heath immediately.  Marjorie was more nervous and skeptical of the blond cowboy.

“Welcome to Stockton, Mr. and Mrs. Greene.  I’m glad you came.” He drawled.  Why Janine looks like her mother, he thought.  “I’ll get your bags and then we can be off” he told them.

“I’ll show you where they are,” Charles trailed after Heath in search of their luggage.  Janine and her mother looked at each other, at a loss for words.

“You are staying at my house till the wedding Mama.” She finally told her.  Marjorie nodded.

Marjorie couldn’t get over the change in her daughter.  She didn’t know whether to cry or laugh.  She was so happy to finally see her daughter after all these years.  But so sad at all the years lost.  Marjorie spent many a night crying herself to sleep because of the last night they had together.  She regretted what was said that night but she didn’t really think Janine was going to marry that monster.  What a life she must have led.

The men came back from loading the luggage into the carriage.  “Ready to go ladies?” asked Heath.  Janine nodded and took the arm that Heath offered.  Charles took Marjorie’s arm and headed off towards the carriage.

Heath helped everyone in and took the reins.  “How was the trip out here?” He inquired.

“Fine just fine” replied Charles from the back.  Janine glanced at the back and saw her mother nervously wringing her kerchief.

“We will be there shortly Mama.  I don’t live too far from here.” She tried to make her mother feel more comfortable.  A few minutes later, they were at her door and Heath jumped out to help everyone out.  “Heath, you staying for supper?” asked Janine looking imploringly at him.

“Sure Janey.  I’d love to.” He grabbed the bags out of the boot and brought them into the small cabin.

“Put them in the spare room, Heath.” Janine went over to the cook stove and lit it.  “I’ll make us some coffee.  Make yourselves at home.” Her parents were amazed at the ease their grown up daughter seemed around her home.  They looked around the cabin and saw that it was sparsely furnished with little knick knacks around.  She had a few pictures and a couple of samplers on the walls.  They looked at her kitchen and it had very little in the way of dishes and the usual assortment of pots and pans that one acquires when living alone.  The sofa had a quilt thrown over the back of it and doilies adorned the parlour chairs.  It seemed quite comfortable despite its meager look.

“Very nice place you have Janine Marie, “ said Marjorie.

“Thank you mama” came the reply.  “ Are you hungry I can get you a snack while you are waiting for dinner.”

“No thanks” Heath came out of the spare bedroom and helped Janine with the coffee.  He gave the older couple their coffee and made himself comfortable on the sofa.  “So Heath, what do you do?”

“I am a rancher, sir.  My family owns a spread just east of town here.”

“I see.  Is it big?” Charles had always been interested in ranching but had no experience with it.

“Its 30,000 acres.” Heath said nonchalantly.  Janine didn’t know how big the ranch was.  She was impressed.

Charles whistled.  “That’s some spread.  You raise cattle?”

“Yes and horses too.  Mother would be obliged if you could come to the ranch tomorrow for supper.  If ya come then I can show ya around the ranch.”

Charles searched his wife’s face for the answer.  He decided to answer for the both of them, “Tell your mother we would like very much to come out and meet your family.”

Heath nodded and Janine got up to start supper.  “I’m about to start supper.  Anyone care for more coffee?” There were nods all around so she poured them all coffee.  She had decided to cook a roast beef for supper, which had been simmering in the oven.  She needed to peel potatoes, husk the corn.  There were rolls, pickles and salad in the icebox that she had made earlier.  “Heath can ya husk the corn for me?” Her mother started to get up to help.  “No mama.  Ya sit and relax, Heath’ll help me.  He is handy in the kitchen.” She winked at him.  “He’s gonna make some woman a good husband one day.” She enjoyed teasing him.  Her parents chuckled at the teasing.

Her parents decided to sit at the table so they could talk to the younger couple about the wedding preparations.  They were impressed that most of the details had been taken care of.  “I will show ya my dress after supper mama.  Of course Heath can’t see it but the men can have drinks and play cards or checkers after supper.” Heath nodded at the decision.  He was busy husking the corn and just listening to the conversation.

Janine peeled potatoes, wondering how she was going to say the things she wanted to say to her parents.  She wanted to tell them that she was sorry she left the way she did.  She wanted to say they were right and she was wrong.  But her pride was getting in the way.  She wanted to tell them all about Gary and what a rat he was.

Janine was almost finished peeling the potatoes while Heath was washing the corn and putting it in the pot.  “You want these on the stove now, Janey?” he asked her.

“Yes please,” She finished the potatoes, putting them on to boil as well.  She went to the cupboard, pulled out some dishes.  She went to the cupboard in her room and took out a tablecloth.  She and Heath spread it across the table, she took the dishes and placed them on the table.  She handed the utensils to Heath, and he finished setting it.  The older couple watched with interest.  These two are perfect together, they thought.

.

Finally dinner was ready and they ate heartily.  Janine was a very good cook .  For dessert she made a chocolate cream pie.  She dished the pie out for everyone, poured coffee and they enjoyed polite conversation.  Janine knew the real conversation was coming a little later after Heath had left.  They were being polite for his sake.

Janine cleared the table when everyone was done while Heath put some water on to warm for the dishes.  It would be a while before the water was warm enough, so she invited Marjorie into her bedroom to see her wedding dress.  The men went outside to enjoy their after dinner smoke and man talk.

Janine nervously took the dress out of the closet.  Marjorie gasped at the dress.  “It’s beautiful Janine!” The older lady observed the younger with interest.  “You really love this man, don’t you?” Janine could only nod.  Marjorie continued, “you know when you left so many years ago, we were really disappointed in you.” Janine nodded, her eyes looking downwards thinking of that time so long ago.  “I knew you had been seeing that man.  So we looked into his past.  He was a philanderer and was married before.  We looked up his wife and found out that he had abused her.  How could you Janine?” Janine didn’t say anything.  She had known about his wife but never thought about her.  She must have suffered the same fate at his hands.

Janine wept, sitting on the bed, she looked up at her mother.  “I’m sorry Mama.  Please forgive me! I was wrong, so totally wrong to go against your wishes.  I have learned a terrible lesson at the expense of almost losing my own.  I missed you so much.”

Marjorie regarded her daughter, drawing her into her loving arms.  “Janine Marie, I forgave you many years ago.  I just wish you had told me where you were at so we could’ve helped you.  I, too, am sorry for what was said.  We spoiled you terribly, I know that now.  “ Janine placed her head on her mother’s chest and listened to her heart beat.  This was her favorite spot, how she missed her mother’s loving embrace.

“Do you like him Mama? Do you like Heath?” she looked imploringly at her mother.

“Yes Dear.  He seems like a really nice young man.  He seems very respectful and very quiet.”

“Oh Mama! He is all that and more! The water must be hot by now, come let’s go out and join the men, it sounds like they are back in.” Janine rose from the bed, wiped her eyes and gave her mother a hug.  “Thanks Mama,” she whispered hoping that things were going to be all right now.

Mother and daughter did the dishes while the men played checkers.  After the dishes were done and more coffee was made, the women sat with the men, watching the checker game.  Heath won more then he lost, but neither man minded.  They were having fun.  Janine leaned on Heath’s shoulders and gave him a squeeze.  He leaned back into her hug and grabbed her arms and squeezed back.  The game finished, the men drank their coffee and included the women in their conversation.

Heath stood up after drinking his coffee, put his cup in the sink and announced that it was time to leave.  He had a full day’s work ahead of him.  “Okay Heath.  I will walk ya out.” Janine linked arms with him and told her parents “I’ll be right back Mama and Papa.”

Charles shook Heath’s hand, “It was a pleasure to meet you young man.”

Heath shook his hand replying, “My pleasure sir!” Heath adorned his hat and tipped it to Marjorie, “Be much obliged ma’am if ya would come to dinner at the ranch tomorrow”

Marjorie smiled, “We’ll be there Heath.  I’m looking forward to meeting your family.” Heath nodded and the couple went out the door, down the stairs and out to the carriage.

They stood by the carriage, talking.  “Well Janey,” he drawled, “I have to go.  I don’t wanna but I have to.  Will ya be all right?” She nodded but she knew what was coming from her parents.  It was going to be a very long night.  She hugged him with all the strength she had.  “Ow! Janey!” he teased.  “It’ll be all right.  We can talk tomorrow night.  I know that y’all have a lot to talk about.” He pulled her face to his and kissed her deeply.  “I love you Janey and I promise to take care of ya always.  I’ll never ever hurt ya.” He looked deep into her tear filled eyes.  “Hey what’s this? Don’t cry my pretty.  Things’ll turn out for the best.” Janine hung on to him, not wanting to let go.

“I love ya Heath Barkley!” she kissed him with all the passion she was feeling at that moment.  He responded by parting her lips and tasting her.  They were lost in each other till Janine regained her senses.  They stood there for a few minutes holding each other.

Gently, he pulled himself away, saying softly, “I have to go now.  We live on a working ranch ya know.” He gave her a lopsided smile, giving her one last hug and kiss before he leapt into the carriage.  “See ya tomorrow night!” Janine sauntered onto the porch, watching him as he drove away.  She went into the house, expecting the worst from Charles and Marjorie.

She poured herself a coffee and set down on the couch.  She glanced at her parents, wondering how to start such a serious topic.  “Do you like him Papa?” She was rubbing her finger around the edge of the cup.

“Yes Janine I do.  He is a very respectable young man.  You made a good choice this time.  Of course we don’t know him well but he seems very good to you.  Are you happy?” Charles looked at his daughter, who was avoiding his eyes.

“Yes Papa.  I am very happy.  Happier then I’ve been in a long time.” She took a deep breath and went on.  “Life with Gary was not good Papa.”

“I had a feeling.  We had him investigated just after you started sneaking out to meet him.  We found out things about him that were not good.  He was a philanderer, was married before you, a thief, and a liar.  And you know how I feel about thieves and liars!” Charles had a lot more to say, but he wanted his daughter, his pride and joy, to talk to him.  It felt right to have his family back together again.

“Oh Papa!” she threw herself into his arms.  “I’m so sorry.  I didn’t listen to ya and I should have! I had a terrible life with him but I didn’t leave.  I wanted to many many times, but I didn’t have the courage to.  I was his wife and I thought that was what a wife should do, stay by her husband.  He beat me, he hurt me really bad.  Six months ago I finally gathered up the courage to divorce him.  He was a vindictive man, Papa! He signed the divorce papers, sold the property we owned and gave me half the price.  I thought it was fine.  But you know what???? He killed my boss to get near me! Then he hurt…..” she was almost shouting now and almost in tears thinking of that horrid time.  “He hurt Heath.  Then he came here and tried to kill me.  Heath’s brother came to my rescue, thank the good Lord, and shot him dead.  But Gary got one shot at me and it nicked my side.” She stopped when she heard her mother gasp.  She turned to her mother, “Mama, I was so angry.  I was angry at you both for not stopping me from marrying him.  Oh I know ya tried! But ya didn’t try hard enough!” She got up and started pacing the room.

“Janine!” Charles spoke in his most authoritative voice.  “Stop that pacing and sit down here!” Janine obeyed.  “We tried to stop you! You were so headstrong.  We spoiled you.  We both admit that.  You were expelled from two of the finest schools in New York.  What were we supposed to do? We wanted you to find out what life was about.  I wanted you to find a job and make your way in the world that way! I didn’t want you to be married at such an early age! But you wouldn’t listen.  No matter what we said or did, YOU WOULDN’T LISTEN!” He paused and took a sip from his cup.  “Don’t go blaming everything on us! You hold part of the blame.  Sure you were mad at us, but we were mad at ourselves for raising such a spoiled brat!” Janine looked shocked, not knowing what to say, she burst into tears.  “I’m sorry you had such a hard time with that first husband of yours.  And I can’t say that I’m not sorry he is dead.  Death is too good for a man like that.  What is done is done, Daughter, we can’t change the past but we can change the future.” With that being said Charles reached for her daughter and gathered her in his arms.  Janine was weeping, very sorry for the pain she caused her parents.  She should have written them years ago.  But she didn’t and there was a lot of animosity that could have been avoided.  She reached out her arm beckoning her mother to come join them.  Marjorie welcomed the hug from her daughter and husband, hoping that life would be better now that they were together.

The next day Janine took her parents for a tour of Stockton, showing them the stores, the outlying areas and finally ending up at the Barkley Ranch.  Her parents were impressed at the size of the ranch.  There was nothing in New York to compare it to.  “It’s impressive, isn’t it?” Janine was looking at it through their eyes and remembered when she saw it for the first time.  It was overwhelming at first but now she was used to it.  “Papa, Heath said he would take you for a tour of the ranch, didn’t he?” Charles nodded.  “It’s early yet, I don’t think Heath is back from the range as of yet but we can go in and meet the rest of the family.” Her parents obediently followed their daughter towards the mansion.  They were clearly impressed with their daughter’s fiancé and overwhelmed at the sight that was in front of them.

They walked to the door of the great mansion and knocked.  The massive door open and Silas announced them as they entered the foyer.  Victoria and Audra entered the large room, welcoming the family into the parlor.  The silver haired lady, spoke to Janine “Hello Janine.  How nice of you to bring your family to our home.” She appealed to Silas to bring some coffee.  He immediately left the room to do just that.

Janine introduced her parents to Victoria and Audra.  They shook hands while Victoria invited them to sit down.  Silas brought out the coffee in a silver coffee pot on a silver tray and placed it in front of the matriarch.  On the tray was some napkins and dainty pastries.  “Thank you Silas”

As they sat there drinking their coffee, the ladies spoke of the upcoming wedding.  There were still a number of details to look after, Janine’s head was beginning to swim and was feeling a bit faint.  Her mother looked at Janine and saw that she was quite pale.  “What’s the matter, dear?” inquired Marjorie, concerned with her daughter’s appearance.

She started to shake.  “I just realized I’ll be married in under a week! And so many details! Will it ever be ready? What if he changes his mind? What if I trip on my dress and fall on my face?” She put her hands to her face, covering it.  “Oh merciful heavens! I -I - I - I ….” She couldn’t go on.  Her stomach started to churn.

Her mother patted her hand.  “It’s okay honey.  Everything will be okay!” Marjorie pulled her closer and whispered softly, “Don’t worry, Heath loves you and he won’t change his mind!”

Janine put her head on her mother’s chest, calming herself down.  “Thanks Mama, I don’t know what got into me!” Janine sat up, took a deep breath, and glanced at everyone.  She gave a nervous laugh, “sorry ‘bout that.  I’m better now.” Victoria and Marjorie looked at each other and smiled, knowing the feeling.  Pre-wedding jitters, they both thought.

The door opened and in walked two very dusty cowboys.  One was wearing his usual black vest, black pants, blue shirt and a light blue checkered kerchief around his neck.  He took off his black gloves and hat, setting them on the table beside the door.  The other was wearing a blue shirt, tan vest, blue shirt and kerchief.  He took off his hat and set it beside his brothers on the table.

“Nick! Heath!” greeted Victoria, getting up from her seat and giving them a hug.

“Howdy Mother.” Nick gave his mother a peck on the cheek.  He took notice of everyone in the room.  Heath followed after his brother, saw Janine and nodded to her parents.

“Howdy Mother.” Heath observed Janine, and smiled but the smile faded when he noticed her pallor.  “Janine! What’s wrong?” He inquired with concern in his voice.

“Nothin’ Heath.  I just had an upset stomach, that’s all.” Heath didn’t believe her, but he didn’t press any further, they would talk a little later.

“Heath, old boy, would you like a drink?” Nick offered a glass of whisky to his blond brother.  He then offered Janine’s father a drink.  “I’m sorry.  I’m afraid we haven’t been introduced.  Nick Barkley.” Nick extended his large, callused hand to the older man.

Charles took it and introduced himself, saying he would love a drink of whisky.  Nick handed him a glass and poured him a jigger.  “Thank you….Nick” He hesitated at his name not because he temporarily forgot but because this dark haired cowboy had an intimidating air about him.  Charles knew this cowboy meant business, meant what he said, and didn’t take any nonsense from anyone, his family included.  You have to admire a man like him, Charles reflected.  “This is my wife, Marjorie, “ He stated.

“My pleasure, Mrs. Greene.” Nick smiled his toothy smile and announced, “I’ve got to ready for dinner.  See ya in a bit” He downed his drink and went upstairs.

“Howdy Mr and Mrs Greene.  How are ya enjoyin’ yer stay here so far?” He extended his hand to Charles who took it readily.

“Janine is a fine host.  She showed us around your wonderful village, and outlying areas.  You have beautiful country here.  No wonder my daughter wants to stay here.” He smiled at his daughter.  “I may just take up residence here myself.” He chuckled at his wife’s reaction.  “Of course it may need some more thought on my end, but its a consideration.”

“Would you like a short tour of the ranch, Mr. Greene, after supper?” Charles nodded, excited about being on a real western working ranch.  This is more then he had ever hoped for.

The front door of the house opened once again and in walked the oldest brother.  “Sorry I’m late Mother.” He apologized and greeted Victoria with a peck on the cheek.

“It’s all right Son.  May I introduce you to Janine’s parents, Mr and Mrs. Greene? My eldest son, Jarrod.” Jarrod extended his hand to them and greeted them formally.

“I trust you are enjoying your stay here, Mrs. Greene?” He smiled at the older lady who seemed uncomfortable in their home.

“Oh yes.  It’s beautiful here and Janine is being a wonderful host.” She beamed at her daughter who seemed at ease in the great manor.  Janine felt anything but at ease, she was getting more nervous as the day wore on.  Heath noticed her awkwardness and winked at her.  Janine smiled and winked back, feeling a little better.  My parents and future in-laws in the same room, would make anyone nervous, she thought.

Nick came down, refreshed and offered everyone another drink.  The ladies sherry and the men whisky.  After a bit Heath excused himself to get cleaned up and ready for supper.  After giving Janine a reassuring smile, he went upstairs.

Silas prepared a feast that night.  There was roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, turnips, salads, rolls, carrots, and for dessert he prepared plum pudding.  It looked delicious sitting on the table.  The massive oak table was adorned with a lace tablecloth, a silver candelabra in the middle.  The dishes were the best china and the best silverware.  The crystal glasses shone in the candlelight.

The two families walked into the dining room and sat down at the table.  Victoria asked Charles to say Grace.

“Bless us O Holy Father for the food we are about to eat.

Bless this family for the friendship

Bless my family for they are special

Thank you O Holy Father for bringing our daughter back to us.

In your sacred name we pray,

Amen”

He looked at his daughter with tears in his eyes, he felt truly blessed.  He observed the room, and silently nodded for them to begin eating.  Victoria thanked the man for his prayer and began serving the meal.

After supper the men adjourned to the billiard room for cigars, drinks and pool.  Heath and Charles wanted to go for a short tour of the ranch, which they did after talking with Nick and Jarrod.

Heath took Charles to the barn and saddled up a horse for him.  He decided on Titan as he hadn’t been ridden for a while and needed the exercise.  They rode out towards Lookout mountain to get a really good view of the entire ranch.  Once there, they dismounted and looked over the edge.  “What a view! Is that the whole ranch we are seeing?” Heath nodded the affirmative.  “You sure have quite the spread here, Barkley.  I’m impressed.  My daughter will do well by you!”

“Mr. Greene, I love yer daughter very much.  I’ve promised her that I’d never hurt her and will always protect her.  I know all about her first husband and it makes me angry that she was treated so badly.” Charles observed this man, so proud and so respectful of others.

“Yes I can see that you love my daughter.  I give you my blessing to marry her.  I think I will enjoy having you as a son.” They grinned at each other, mounting their horses.  “yes son, you treat my daughter well and we’ll get along fine!”

They rode back to the house, unsaddled the horses and went back inside.  They got themselves a drink and played a game of pool.  Finally it was time for the Greene family to leave.  The Barkleys walked them to the door and said their good-byes.  They made plans to meet on Friday night so that Janine could get ready for the wedding at their house.  They would come during the week and help decorate.  There wasn’t to be too many people at the wedding, the two families and a few close friends of Heath’s and some close friends of Janine’s from the restaurant.

Janine looked at Heath, wishing they could spend more time together, but it wasn’t too be.  She missed him although she was near him.  Four more days she thought.  Then we will be together all the time.  Janine smiled at Heath and said good bye.

Heath hugged her and gave her a quick peck on the cheek wishing it was more.  He, too, wished they could have been alone together.  Saturday, he thought, four more days and I’ll be a married man! The smile Heath gave Janine spoke volumes.  His eyes were filled with love and happiness.  Janine left with her parents, secure in the knowledge that she was well loved.

Suddenly it was Friday.  Janine gathered her stuff from her cabin she would need.  She had already packed her things she needed for the honeymoon and sent them on to the ranch.  She took her dress down from the closet and smoothed it out.  Marjorie knocked on her door then entered the room.  “Janine, honey, how are you doing?”

“Mama, I’m nervous! Not about marrying Heath.  I love him and he is the man I want to spend my life with! I’m nervous about tripping on my dress! I’m scared I’m gonna make a mistake in saying my vows.  I’m scared I’m gonna cry!” Marjorie held her arms out to hold the shaking girl.  “Mama, I’m so happy.  I wish this was my first wedding instead of my second.  He loves me, Mama, in spite of my foolishness.  He is gentle, proud and loving.  I’m so proud to be marrying him.”

“Daughter, he is a good man.  I’ve watched him with you.  He respects you and your opinion.  He promised your father that he would take good care of you.  You have nothing to fear.”

They loaded up the wagon and started out to the ranch.  Janine was fidgety, fighting the nervousness that was building up inside her.  The butterflies were threatening to fly out at any minute.  Her mother, knowing how she was feeling, sat in the back with her, holding her hand, telling her that everything was going to be all right.

They reached the ranch house in record time.  Charles went to the back of the wagon and carried Janine’s things into the house.  Silas directed them to the spare room where Janine was to stay.  Janine stayed in the foyer, searching for Heath.  She wanted to be reassured that he was going to be there.  Wanted to be sure he didn’t change his mind.

Heath came down the stairs and gathered her in his arms.  Janine felt better, but she was still shaking a little bit.  “Let’s go for a walk” she told him.  Heath nodded and took her hand.  They went out and stood by the paddock to talk.

“I missed you” she let go of his hand and put her arms around his waist, hugging him snugly.  Heath returned the hug and felt her shaking.

“What’s wrong Janey?” Heath gently pulled her away when he felt wetness on his chest.

“Nothin’ Heath.  I just wanted to hold ya for a while.  Just got a case of nerves I think.” Heath nodded, he was feeling the same way.  “I’m not nervous at all about marrying ya.  You’re the best thing that happened to me!” She looked deeply into his eyes, her own watering, and said, “I love ya Heath Barkley! Don’t you forget that!”

“I love ya too Janey, my pretty.  I’ve got to admit I’m a little nervous, wonderin’ if I will make a mistake and fall or miss hearin’ my vows.” Janine stared at him incredulously, “Yes Janine, I’m not afraid of marryin’ ya, just afraid of making a mistake at the ceremony!” Janine felt better, knowing that they were both nervous about the ceremony.  They stood there, watching the horses, each thinking their own thoughts about the wedding.  Janine turned and lifted her face to him, he put his strong arms around her and very gently kissed her.  He pulled her closer and rubbed her back.  She relaxed and hugged him tighter, never wanting the moment to end.

Janine woke up Saturday morning with a smile on her face.  “I’m gettin’ married” she sang.  In a few short hours, they would be man and wife.  She slept very little the night before, excitement setting in.  Silas knocked on her door and entered.  He was carrying a tray that contained coffee, toast, and a plate of ham, eggs and hash browns.  “Thank you Silas.  But I am really too nervous to eat”

“Missus Barkley said for you to eat and she will be up shortly to help you until your mama arrives.  There are fresh towels in the bathroom so you can freshen up.”

“Thanks again Silas.  You are really too kind” Silas smiled and left the room.

Once again there was a knock on the door.  “Come in” she called.  Audra came in and gave Janine a hug.  “Are you excited? You’re going to be married in a few hours!” Audra seemed more excited then she was.

“Oh yes, Audra.  I can’t eat this meal.  I know I should, but I can’t.  Have you seen Heath, this morning?” She was curious to see if he was as nervous as she.

“Yes Janine.  He came downstairs, took a few bites of breakfast, went outside, came back in and went back to his room.” Audra opened the door, “Listen!” Janine smiled as she heard the noise coming from his room.

“Nick! Where is my suit?”

“Right on the chair, Heath.” Nick sounded exasperated.

“Where is my tie?”

“On the chair with the suit.  Honestly, Heath, yer more nervous then a mother bear protecting her cubs!” Janine chuckled and shut the door satisfied in the knowledge that Heath was just as nervous as she.

She took her time getting ready.  Marjorie came upstairs to help Janine with her dress.  She looked breath taking , the dress fitted her perfectly, the veil matching her dress.  Her mother was so stunned at the sight, that she burst in tears.  This is the way it should have been the first time around, Marjorie couldn’t help thinking to herself.  Marjorie wiped her eyes and turned to observe her daughter.  The older lady had something to give her daughter.  She took Janine’s hand and looked into her emerald eyes.  “You are a picture of perfection, daughter.  I wish you much happiness in this new adventure of your life.  I know you and your cowboy will be very happy together.  I have something for you.” Janine looked at her, surprised.

“You don’t have to give me anything,” she told her mother.  “Just you being here and forgiving me for my past sins is good enough for me.”

“Now Janine, this is a special something that I have been saving for your wedding.  With your first wedding I felt you didn’t want anything from me but this time is special.”

She gave the girl a small box.  Janine opened it and gasped.  “These are the diamond earrings that you wore on your wedding day!” Tears came rushing to her eyes.

“Yes Janine, your father bought these for me the day before the wedding and I’ve saved them ever since.  I’d like you to have them.” Janine hugged her mother and put the earrings on.

“Thank you Mama.” She managed to get out before the tears fell.  There was another knock on the door.  “Come in” squeaked Janine.  Audra, Victoria and her father all came into the bedroom.

“How you doing, sweetheart?” Charles looked at her daughter.  He remembered his own wedding day, thirty years earlier.  She looks beautiful, just like her mother, he thought.

“I’m fine, daddy.” She slipped and used her childhood name for her.  Victoria nodded and gave Janine a hug.

“Are you almost ready, Janine?” It was all she could do just to nod.  “Heath is waiting for you in the garden.  You look beautiful!” Victoria gave the girl a hug and went downstairs.  Audra was a bridesmaid so she stayed with Janine until she was ready.

Marjorie hugged her daughter again and went downstairs to tell everyone she was ready.  Audra hugged her and went down stairs to walk out to the garden.  Charles offered his daughter his arm and she nervously took it.  “I love you Daddy.” She gave him a kiss on the cheek and said, “Thanks for forgiving me!”

He smiled at her and patted her hand.  Then they descended the stairs and out the door to the garden where Victoria was playing the wedding march.  Eyes straight ahead, she stared right at Heath.  He couldn’t believe that this beautiful lady was going to be his wife.  His heart filled with love.  She smiled at him, all nervousness leaving her body.  She was happy.  Her father took her hand and gave her to the groom.  He took it and she handed her bouquet to Audra.  She turned and memorized his face, listening to the reverend.

“Dearly Beloved, we are gathered together to join this man and this woman in Holy Matrimony.  Marriage is a sacred vow between a man and wife and God and not to be entered into lightly.  Is there anyone here who has any reason for this couple not to be married?” The Reverend scanned the room and seeing that no one objected to the marriage proceeded.

He said a prayer blessing the ceremony then turned to Janine saying, “Do you Janine Marie take Heath Morgan Thomson to be your husband, to have and to hold, through sickness and health, for better and for worse, till death do you part?”

“I do” She smiled nervously at Heath.

“Do you Heath Morgan Thomson take Janine Marie to be your wife, to have and to hold, through sickness and health, for better and for worse, till death do you part?”

“I do” He smiled back at her.  They both heard sniffles in the room.  They chose to ignore it.

“I understand you both have your own vows you would like to recite.  Janine you may start.”

“I love you Heath.  From the first moment I met you I knew you were for me.  You treated me with respect and dignity.  More then I deserve.  I love you more than you will ever know.  I want to be the best wife, friend, lover, partner for you.  I promise to never strike out at you in anger.  In front of our friends and family I promise you this.” She smiled at Heath who had tears in his eyes at the emotion in her voice.

“Heath.”

“I love you Janey, my love, my friend, my partner.  I too felt that special bond when we first met, like we were meant for each other.  You make me feel complete and happy when we are together.  I want to promise you one thing.  I promise never to hurt you physically or otherwise.  I know you have been hurt in the past and I promise to keep you and cherish you as long as the Good Lord decides to keep us together.  This I promise in front of our families and friends.” He looked deep into her tear filled emerald eyes and smiled.

“May I have the rings please?” Nick fished around in his pockets for the rings, causing the bridal couple to panic for a few minutes.  He flashed a grin to them and handed them to the reverend.  “Bless these rings and this marriage.” He handed the smaller ring to Heath, “place this ring on the third finger of her left hand and repeat after me, With this ring, I thee wed.”

Heath did as he was told, saying “With this ring I thee wed.”

“Janine, place this ring on the third finger of his left hand and repeat after me, With this ring I thee wed.”

She did as she was told, saying “With this ring I thee wed.”

The reverend said a prayer to bless the marriage to make it a happy one.  He ended it saying, “You may kiss the bride!”

Heath hesitated then reached out and lifted up the veil, revealing an excited Janine.  He moved closer, put his arms around her waist while she put her arms around his neck.  He kissed her tenderly for their first kiss as man and wife.  “May I introduce to you, Mr. And Mrs. Heath Barkley!” The newly married couple grinned at them and stood by the rose bushes to accept congratulations from everyone.

They barely ate dinner, but nobody noticed.  The couple were thinking about their wedding night.  Heath took hold of her small hand and marveled at how beautiful his fiancée….no wife now, was, he corrected himself.  He smiled at his wife.  What a nice feeling that was.

After the supper, there was a little dance, some champagne then it was time for the couple to leave for their honeymoon.  They had decided to spend the night in Stockton then go for their trail ride the next day.  They went upstairs to change out of their wedding clothes and into their riding clothes.  They had all their other things packed on the horses all ready.  They said good bye to everyone, told her parents that they could stay at the cabin as long as they wanted.  They would be back in two weeks.

They arrived at the Cattleman’s Hotel and registered.  They had the best room in the hotel, Jarrod made sure of that.  They didn’t care about the room.  They only had eyes for each other.

On the table was some roses and a bottle of champagne.  Heath opened the bottle and poured each a glass.  Janine was shy all of a sudden.  The moment had come and she was a little afraid.  Heath looked at her and took her hand.  He caressed the inside of her palm as he sipped the champagne.  Janine put her glass down as did Heath.

Heath pulled her closer and he just held her trembling body.  “Janine” he whispered.  He lifted her face to his kissing her cheeks, her chin and finally her lips.  She parted her lips for him as he savored her taste.  He moaned in delight.  His hands roamed down her back and over her buttocks.  She moaned at the feelings he was causing.  Her hands roamed his back to his front.  She pulled away and smiled shyly.  Her hands slowly unbuttoned his shirt.  His hair was thick on his chest and she ran her hands through it.  He groaned at the sheer pleasure she was giving him.  His hands roamed to the back of her dress and unbuttoned her.  Her dress fell to the floor.  He laid her down on the bed and explored her body, kissing her breasts, her face, her stomach.  She moaned with pleasure.  Her hands reached down to his pants and unbuttoned them, silently telling him to remove them.  She pulled him closer to her wanting him, needing him, loving him.  She kissed his mouth, his face, his hands.  She was in ecstasy.  Then he loved her.  After it was all over, they smiled at each other, breathless, and kissed again, passions stirring within them once again.  It was a night to remember.

They fell asleep in each other’s arms, fulfilled and contented.  Janine thought about her past, present and now she had a future.  It looked very blissful indeed.  She snuggled into Heath’s arms and whispered “I love you.” Heath turned her over and kissed her, tasting her, then whispered, “I love you too.” Janine smiled and put her arms around her new husband and fell back to sleep.  Their honeymoon was going to be fantastic! She thought just before she fell asleep.  Heath smiled and thought about his new wife in his arms.  He was very happy and in love.  What a wonderful feeling, he thought and fell asleep.

The next morning they both woke up when the sun made its appearance through the hotel window.  Heath was shocked he had slept so long.  He looked at his wife and smiled.  He kissed her slowly at first, loving the fact that they were married and would now be waking up beside her every morning.  He sighed.  Her arms wrapped around his neck and slowly drew his head to hers.  She returned his kisses and their bodies responding once more to each other, they were fulfilled once again.

Reluctantly, they made themselves get up and get dressed.  They were on their honeymoon and wanted to get started.  They went downstairs, hand in hand, had breakfast and then went on their way.  They were going to Strawberry first and then where they went from there was anybody’s guess.  They had two weeks to travel and they were going to enjoy every minute of it!
