Coco’s Lament

by Lindabrit

Of all the mounts on the ranch, I am the toughest of course,

the strongest and the roughest, for I am Nick Barkley’s horse!

We go everywhere at the gallop, we seldom, if ever, slow down.

You’ll see us pass by in a chocolate blur as we thunder into town.

I’m an excellent cutting horse I just love to exhibit my skill,

you’ll see Nick and I darting into the herd, cutting out calves at will.

I’ve been Nick’s horse for a long time, I am his pride and joy,

we’ve been a team since I was a colt and he was only a boy.

We can handle any job on the Barkley ranch with ease,

I love to be on the trail with Nick, sleeping under the trees.

The men all call Nick Boss and that makes me feel proud,

for I am like my master, I stand out from the crowd.

There’s just one thing that bothers me, I’m beginning to feel my age,

but when Heath tells Nick I’m getting old, he flies into a rage!

Nevertheless the fact remains that I’m turned twenty two,

my bones are beginning to creak and groan, so what am I to do.

There’s a green and pleasant pasture behind the barn I’m told,

where Nick and Heath provide shelter for horses that are old,

I’m ready to hang up my horseshoes, it’s time for rest and play,

Just so long as  my beloved master Nick visits me every day!
