Part 1

Heath stood before the closed door willing himself to calm down. The house was empty except for Jarrod who was working in the study. Heath had arrived nearly two months ago and he knew the time had come. He had promised his mama something and only Jarrod could help him with that promise. Heath lifted his hand and lightly knocked on the door.

“Come in.” The familiar baritone voice called out.

Slowly Heath opened the door and faced his big brother.

“Heath! What is it?” Jarrod put down the paper he was reviewing and stared up at Heath. He knew his brother was nervous by the way he was shuffling his feet. Jarrod stood and walked closer. “Heath, is something wrong?”

Silently the blond man nodded and then lowered his gaze.

Jarrod sighed, his patience running out. “Heath, I can’t help you if you don’t talk.”

“I need you to find someone.”

Jarrod’s interest was peaked. “Who Heath?” He walked away and settled against the desk, waiting for Heath to continue.

“A girl.”

Jarrod smiled suddenly, feeling he knew where this was going. “An old girlfriend?” he asked, the grin widening.

“No.” Heath shook his head. “A child.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a tattered old picture. Slowly he handed it to Jarrod.

The lawyer studied the picture, and then stared at his brother.  “Who is she?” Jarrod crossed his arms and waited.

“My sister” Heath blurted out as he grabbed the picture back. The look on Jarrod’s face convinced him it had been a mistake to confide in his brother. “Forget it,” he mumbled as he turned to leave.

“Hold on.” Jarrod grabbed his arm. “Is she your sister or ours?”

It took Heath a minute to understand where Jarrod was heading. “No. She’s not a Barkley.”

“OK.” Jarrod sighed as he released Heath’s arm. “Start at the beginning and tell me everything.” Jarrod sat down and pointed to the other chair.

Heath shook his head as he slowly began his story. Jarrod had to strain to hear each word of his quiet brother. “After the war I went home and discovered my mother was married…and I had a baby sister.” Heath smiled slightly. “I was angry and I didn’t stick around long enough to let her explain. But I went back a year later and Sam intrigued me.”

“Sam?”

“Samantha” Heath countered, “my sister. She was already walking and she followed me everywhere; so quizzical and into everything.” Heath’s mind wandered and he smiled at the memories. “She had the biggest, greenest eyes and always laughing.” Heath glanced over at Jarrod. “But I was young and I hated that town so I never stayed long. Sam always knew when I was leaving and she would cry and beg me to stay.” A sad smile crossed Heath’s face. “I always tried to go back for her birthday but I was working on a job when she turned five and I couldn’t make it. When I got to Strawberry it was too late.”

“Too late for what?” When Heath didn’t answer Jarrod strolled closer. “Heath, why was it too late?”

Heath closed his eyes briefly. “She was gone. Her bastard of a father took her away the night she turned five. Jarrod I swear I searched everywhere I could but I didn’t have the means or the resources and they had a week’s head start.” Heath clenched his fists. “I promised my mother I would find Sam and make sure she’s alright and I need your help to do it.” His eyes pleaded with his brother.

Jarrod walked around the desk and sat down, digesting everything his brother had just told him.

“Please Jarrod.”

The lawyer glanced at his brother before lowering his eyes. He knew how hard this was for Heath and his silence was making it worse. But he also knew how hard it would be to find the child and he wasn’t sure Heath would understand. “Heath I can’t promise you anything but I’ll try.”

The young man sighed with relief. “Thank you.”

Jarrod stood up suddenly. “How long has she been missing? What is her father’s name? What was he doing in a mining town?” Jarrod paced as the questions poured out.

“Jarrod stop.” Heath grabbed him. “You’re making me dizzy.”

“Sorry.” Jarrod again leaned against the desk. “Heath, what are you going to do if we do find her?”

Heath shrugged. “I just want to know she’s ok, that’s it.”

Jarrod didn’t believe him but he didn’t pursue the subject. “Answer my other questions,” he ordered, back in lawyer mode.

Heath hesitated as he tried to remember the questions.

“How long has she been missing?” Jarrod prompted. His heart sank when Heath answered nearly three years. That’s a long time Jarrod silently thought.

“Her father’s name is Robert Mills and I don’t have a clue what he was doing in Strawberry. Jarrod I rarely saw him and he always disappeared when I was around.” He thought back to something his mother told him. “He was a newspaper man and he wanted to work in a city.” Heath looked up hopefully. “That’s a good place to start, right?”

Jarrod didn’t have the heart to tell him how many cities and how many newspapers existed. “It’s a good start,” he stated quietly. “I’m going into town and I’ll start wiring everyone I know who could possibly help.” Jarrod stopped in front of his brother. “Heath, don’t get your hopes up. This is a long shot but I’ll do my best.”

Heath smiled. “I know.” He quickly grasped Jarrod’s arm. “Thank you.”

Jarrod smiled at his brother. “That’s what family is for.”

“I’m learning.” Heath let go of his brother. “Please don’t tell the rest of the family, ok?”

“Fine,” Jarrod muttered as he exited the study.

Heath took out his picture and stared at it. “We’ll find you Sam. I promised her I would find you.”

 * * * * *

“Heath, pay attention to the game.” Nick easily won his third game in a row. “What is your problem? You’ve been walking around in a daze for weeks now.”

Heath remained silent, which made Nick even angrier.

“Fine.” The elder Barkley stood up. “I’m going up to bed.” Nick stormed out of the room.

“Heath, are you ok?” He glanced over at Victoria.

“I’m fine.” He wasn’t but he couldn’t tell her why. It had been nearly three weeks and Jarrod had come up empty. He knew his brother wouldn’t give up but Heath had and it hurt him more than he could have imagined.

“Heath, don’t shut me out.” Victoria placed her hand on his shoulder. “We know something is bothering you and it might help if you tell me.”

“I said I was fine.” It came out sharply and Heath immediately regretted his tone. “I’m sorry but there’s nothing wrong.” Heath walked out briskly.

“Someday you’ll trust me.” Victoria watched the young man climb the stairs.

“So everything is just dandy. I don’t believe you.” Nick confronted his brother before he could enter his bedroom. “Heath, you’ve been absentminded and your work is suffering and we both know it.”

“My work is just fine.” Heath tried to get around Nick but he couldn’t.

“So you trust Jarrod enough to tell him but not me?” Nick’s voice belied how hurt he truly felt. “I’ve seen you two whispering together and he’s as closed mouth as you are.”

Heath sighed.  “Nick, there’s nothing to tell. I’m tired and I want to go to bed.”

“Go ahead.” Nick moved out of the way. “I’m going to find out,” he yelled as the door slammed in his face. He stood there for a few minutes before entering his own bedroom and slamming the door behind him.

 * * * * *

Heath jumped off of his horse and raced into Jarrod’s office. “I got here as quick as I could. Did you find her?”

“Heath, sit down.”

The young man’s heart sank. “Jarrod just tell me.” Heath took off his hat and tossed it on the chair.

Jarrod stood up and walked around the desk. He put a hand on his brother’s shoulder.  “I did find Samantha and she’s at an orphanage in San Francisco.”

“Orphanage?” Heath moved away from his brother. “Why is she there? Where’s her father?” Heath shoved his hat out of the way and sat down hard. “My sister is not an orphan,” he whispered.

Jarrod grabbed a chair and sat down.  “I don’t have all the pieces but what I do know is Robert Mills and his daughter traveled cross-country and ended up in New York for a couple of months. He got a job there but also got in trouble with the law and fled back to California.” The lawyer paused momentarily.  “They were in San Francisco when Mills was shot dead in front of his child.”

“No. God no.” Heath muttered, then stood up. “Jarrod I have to get her out of there.” He headed for the door but Jarrod interceded.

“Heath, there’s more. I’ve been in touch with the orphanage and she’s not up for adoption.”

“Why? Jarrod, what are you trying to say?”

Jarrod shrugged slightly. “That’s all I know. We’ll know more when we get there.” Heath stared at him. “I have two tickets on the next train to San Francisco” Jarrod explained. “They’re hiding something and we’ll find out and we’ll get your sister out of there.”

Heath visibly relaxed as he leaned against the door.

“Heath, what are you going to tell the family?”

“Nothing” Heath stated firmly. “I need to see Sam first and I’ll figure out the rest later.” He walked out before Jarrod could stop him.

 * * * * *

Heath knew Nick would take the news badly and his brother didn’t disappoint him. He braced himself as Nick ranted and raved, pacing back and forth.

“This is a working ranch and I need you here, working.” Nick stopped briefly and faced his brother. “What is so almighty important that you need to run off to San Francisco?”

Nick didn’t expect an answer and he didn’t get one. Heath hadn’t said one word since he told Nick the news. Nick stared his brother down, hoping to see him break. But Heath stood tall and looked him in the eyes.

“Fine.” Nick slowly allowed himself to relax. “I’m telling you boy. You better be ready to work when you get back and if I see any slacking I’m going to be on you from morning to night. Understand?” The harsh words were followed by a slight smile and Heath knew his brother was letting him off the hook.

“Thanks Nick.” He slapped his brother on the back before heading into the house to pack. Heath had no intention of leaving San Francisco without his sister no matter how long it took.

 * * * * *

Heath felt uneasy the minute they stepped into the building.

“Her office is this way.” Jarrod motioned towards the right and Heath followed his brother.  “Sister Joan.” Jarrod smiled and reached over and shook her hand.

“Mr. Barkley.” The nun returned the smile as she pointed to the chairs in front of her desk. “Please have a seat and explain your interest in this child.” She picked up a file that Heath assumed was about Sam. “As I told you in the telegram this child is not up for adoption. Why are you interested in her?”

“She’s my sister” Heath blurted out, “and I’m taking her out of here.”

“Heath!” Jarrod shot him a warning glance.

The nun seemed unconcerned as she flipped through the file. “It says here that Samantha told the authorities that she had no other family. Why didn’t she mention you?” Her eyes bore into Heath.

“I don’t know. I just want to see her.” Heath stood up and walked around the room. “I have been waiting three years to see Sam and I’m not leaving here until I do.”

“Sister, please! Let us talk to her and see if she remembers Heath. I know she saw her father die, so maybe she was in shock at the time.”

“No.” Sister Joan stood up.

“Why not?” Heath moved closer. “What is wrong with her?”

Jarrod also stood and gently pulled his brother away.  “I have the same concerns as my brother. I think we have the right to know what is wrong with this child and why we can’t see her.” Jarrod released Heath’s arm and approached the sister.

“I don’t even know you.” She walked around the desk and sat back down. “Why should I believe that he’s her brother?”

“Heath, show her the picture.”

Heath obliged and handed it to her.

“We can also obtain birth certificates that will show they both have the same mother and produce friends that will confirm the truth.” Jarrod smiled broadly. “But that will take time and I don’t think it’s necessary at this point. Do you?”

“I’ll get someone to show you the way.” She left and returned a few minutes later with a young woman. "Mary will point out Samantha to you. I will be here waiting for the questions I’m sure you will have.” They followed Mary out of the room.

“Jarrod, that stuff in there. I don’t have a birth certificate…”

“Quiet.” Jarrod held him back. “We won’t worry about that unless we have to put up a fight.”

In silence they followed Mary out of the building to the back yard where the children were playing. Heath searched the area but he had no idea what Sam looked like.

“She’s over there.” Mary pointed to a lone figure sitting by the fence. “Don’t be surprised if she doesn’t talk to you. She doesn’t talk to anybody.” With that Mary abruptly walked away.

Heath quickly headed that way, stopping suddenly when he was a few feet away.  “What if she doesn’t know me?” Heath whispered. “Why isn’t she playing with the other children?”

“Let’s find out.” Jarrod placed his arm around his brother and guided him towards the young girl.

“Samantha.” She didn’t move as Heath lowered himself to the ground. She was wearing an oversized cap and Heath removed it, gasping at the unruly hair hanging over her face. She turned and Heath moved the hair until he could see her eyes. “Sam.” Heath sighed with relief when he knew it was her. “Sam, it’s Heath. Do you remember me?”

She looked him in the eyes and then lowered her gaze. “I know you,” she whispered as Jarrod knelt down next to them.

“Sweetheart, what happened to your wrists?” Heath hadn’t noticed until Jarrod pointed out the bandaged wrists.

Sam suddenly grabbed the hat out of Heath’s hand, put it on and turned her back on them.

“Let’s go back inside.” Jarrod pulled Heath away. “I think it’s time to get the full story.” Jarrod practically pushed his brother all the way back to the nun’s office. “What happened to that child?” Jarrod leaned over the desk, breathing hard.

Sister Joan took a deep breath and leaned back in her chair.  “She was very withdrawn when she arrived here and it’s just gotten worse over time. She doesn’t interact with the other children and they do pick on her often.” She smiled sadly. “We have tried to get through to her but nothing works and lately we’re forcing her to eat enough to stay alive.” She paused and glanced over at Heath, who silently stared at his feet. “I know it’s hard to see a child like this but maybe now you understand why she can’t be adopted.”

“I don’t understand and we will be taking that child out of here.” Jarrod hit the desk to make his point. “Dare I ask what happened to her wrists?”

“She got a hold of a kitchen knife a week ago and nearly killed herself. As thin as she is, it’s amazing she’s still alive.”

Jarrod couldn’t believe how nonchalant she sounded. He glanced over at Heath who simply stood there, seemingly in shock.

“Sister, it’s obvious that Samantha is not doing well in here. What is it going to take to get her out?”

She mulled that over for a few minutes.  “Are either of you married?”

“No.” Jarrod answered for them.

She shook her head. “I would consider a two-parent family or a strong woman. But that’s all I’ll accept.”

“Fine.” Jarrod crossed his arms. “Our mother is the strongest woman you will find. Is that acceptable?”

“No” Heath blurted out as Jarrod spun around and faced him. “Sam is my problem and I’ll figure this out myself.”

“Excuse us for a moment.” Jarrod grabbed a hold of Heath’s shirt and dragged him out of the room.  “Heath, Sam is our problem and she is going to die if we don’t get her out of here. Swallow your damn pride and let your family help you. Do it for your sister.”

Heath closed his eyes as he tried to hold back the tears. “Jarrod, what happened to her? She’s just a child, she shouldn’t be like that.”

“I know.” Jarrod placed his hands on Heath’s shoulders and gently squeezed them. “Let me get Mother and let’s get Sam home, ok?”

Heath could only nod as he tried to keep his composure.

“Heath, we’ll get her through this. I promise you.” Jarrod lightly touched his brother’s face. “Let’s talk to Sister Joan and then we’ll explain everything to Sam.” He gave Heath a few more minutes to compose himself before they reentered the office.

 * * * * *

Jarrod returned home just as his family was finishing lunch. He heard the chatter and headed towards the dining room.

“Jarrod.” Nick was the first to see him. “It’s about time you got home. Where’s Heath?”

“He’s still in San Francisco. Hello Mother.” He leaned down and kissed her.

“Why in god’s name is he still there?” Nick pushed himself away from the table. “And don’t tell me nothing is going on.” Nick stood up. “What is going on?”

“I’ll explain if you give me a chance. Let’s go into the family room.” He walked out and they followed him.  “A few weeks back Heath came to me and asked me to find someone for him.”

“Who does he want you to find?” Nick interrupted. “I have work piling up because Heath is not here. Just get to the point.”

“Nick, don’t interrupt and he will get to the point.” Nick rolled his eyes. “I just…

“Nicholas!”

Nick let out an exasperated gasp.

“Thank you Mother.” Jarrod smiled at her. “The point is,” Jarrod continued, emphasizing each word, “Heath has a little sister and he hasn’t seen her in three years.”

“What?” Nick was about to say more until he noticed the look his mother was giving him.

“She was taken by her father when she was five and when he was killed she ended up in an orphanage and that’s where we found her. In San Francisco” he added quietly. For a few minutes there was silence in the house.

“How sad,” Audra commented. “Why didn’t you bring her back?”

“There’s more I need to tell you.”

“There always is” Nick muttered ignoring the look Jarrod gave him. “Don’t tell me we’re taking this one in too.”

“This one is an eight-year-old girl who doesn’t talk much, doesn’t eat enough to keep herself alive and apparently tried to kill herself by cutting her wrists.”

No one spoke, not even Nick.

“It’s settled.” Victoria finally spoke. “What do we need to do to bring her here?” She eyed Nick, daring him to argue her decision.

He looked away and then stormed out of the room.

“He’ll come around” Victoria assured them. “How is Heath?”

“Beside himself with shock and anger.” Jarrod shook his head. “Mother, we need you to become her guardian, otherwise they won’t let her go.”

“When do we leave?” There was no hesitation in Victoria’s voice.

“Thank you mother. I just hope Heath doesn’t do anything crazy before we get there.”

“Like what?” Audra asked.

“Nothing.” Jarrod smiled at his sister. “I’m starving. Any food left?”

“Plenty.” Victoria led them back to the dining room. “Audra, while we’re gone get the guest room ready.” She paused. “Jarrod what is her name?”

“Samantha. And she’s got the prettiest green eyes I’ve ever seen. It’s going to take time but I saw some hope in her eyes when I told her I’d be back and we’d get her out of there.”

Audra put a plate in front of him and he started eating.

“Train leaves early in the morning” Jarrod said between bites. “Audra we should be back in a few days. Hopefully that will give Nick the time he needs to accept a new addition to the family.” Jarrod chuckled softly. “In no time she’ll have Nick wrapped around her little finger.”

He was more worried about Heath but Jarrod kept that to himself as he finished eating.

Part 2

It had been a long trip back to San Francisco and late afternoon by the time they had arrived. They saw Heath sitting on the steps of the orphanage and quickly approached him.

“Heath!” The sullen young man didn’t look up or acknowledge his brother. Jarrod cast a worried look at Victoria.

“Heath.” The older woman sat down next to him. “Jarrod told me everything and we’re going to get your sister out of here and bring her home.” She placed a hand on his arm as he remained motionless and silent.

“Heath how is Sam?” He glanced up at Jarrod.

“The same.”

“Is she in the backyard?”

“Yes.”

Jarrod nodded. “OK then, Mother let’s go take care of business and then we’ll see Sam.” He helped his mother up.

“Heath, this shouldn’t take too long.” They walked away, leaving Heath to sulk in silence.

 * * * * *

Jarrod spotted Samantha in the same spot and guided his mother towards her.

“Samantha.” He knelt down beside her. “Sam, can you look at me?”

Slowly she lifted her head and moved her hair from her eyes. “You came back?” It was posed as a question.

“I promised you I would. I’d like you to meet someone.” Jarrod stood up and held out his hand to the little girl. She hesitated before lightly taking his hand and he helped her up. “Samantha, this is my mother.”

Victoria was warned beforehand but that didn’t help her deal with the sight of this little girl. She was small for her age and her clothes hung loosely on her thin body. Her hair was a matted mess and she wondered when was the last time she had a bath. Victoria lowered herself to her knees and placed her hands on the child’s shoulders.

“Sam, I’ve heard so much about you.” She reached up and removed Sam’s cap. “You’re such a pretty girl, you don’t need to hide your face. We’re going to go back to the hotel and get cleaned up and then get your hair cut, ok?” Sam just stared at her. “Afterwards, we’ll buy some new clothes and then we’ll meet Jarrod and Heath for dinner.”

“I can leave here?” Sam glanced over her shoulder at Jarrod.

He smiled at her. “As soon as all the paperwork is done we’ll go home. In the meantime you’ll stay at the hotel with us.”

She turned back to Victoria.  “OK,” Sam whispered as she reached up and grabbed Victoria’s hand.

“Jarrod, find Heath and meet us at the hotel in three hours.”

“Have fun” Jarrod called out as he watched his mother lead the child away. He then walked off to find his brother. Heath was still sitting on the same steps.

“Heath, let’s go get a drink.” Jarrod sat down and tapped his brother’s knee.

“I’m not thirsty.” Heath pushed him away.

“Well little brother, Sam and mother are off doing girl things and we have three hours to kill until dinner. Do you really want to spend it all sitting here, feeling sorry for yourself?”

Heath abruptly stood up.  “You don’t have a clue how I feel right now.” He tried to walk away but Jarrod grabbed his arm.

“You’re right, I don’t. Feel free to tell me if you want.”

Heath remained silent, his back turned to Jarrod.

“Heath, I’ve done everything you’ve asked of me.” Jarrod walked around until he was facing Heath. “We found your sister, we’re bringing her home and she’s going to need the whole family to get better, especially you. Heath, you know her…”

“I don’t know her,” Heath spit out. “I know a little girl who walked around all day singing and laughing. I don’t know this child.”

“Heath, listen to yourself.” Jarrod grabbed his shoulders. “It has been three years and we don’t know what she’s been through. Give it time. Give her time and give us a chance to help her. That’s all I’m asking.”

Heath lowered his head.

“Are you ready for that drink now?”

Heath nodded and walked off, Jarrod followed.

 * * * * *

Jarrod was amazed at what a haircut and bath could do for Samantha. Her hair was short, shoulder-length with bangs that ended above her eyes. Though it didn’t seem to help her appetite. She quietly picked at her food, moving it around in the plate. Heath was as quiet as his sister, leaving Jarrod and Victoria to keep up the conversation.

“Samantha, have you ever ridden on a train?”

She looked up and nodded at Victoria.

“Where did you go?”

“New York.” Sam again looked down at her food, eating nothing.

“Sam, stop playing with your food and eat.”

It was the first words Heath had spoken all evening and in Jarrod’s opinion, the wrong ones. He glared at Heath, who ignored him and concentrated on his dinner. Sam seemed to ignore Heath’s words as she continued to pick at her food.

“Samantha, you can eat it now or take it with and eat it later. It’s your choice but you will finish your dinner.” Victoria hoped a harsher tone would convince the child that she had to eat.

“I got my cap in New York. It was Jimmy’s before he died.” With that said Sam picked up a forkful and ate it.

Victoria wanted to know who Jimmy was but decided it was better to let her eat. She could tell by the look on Jarrod’s face that he was curious too. Heath, on the other hand, continued to eat, unfazed by the comments his sister made.

 * * * * *

As soon as they opened the front door they were greeted by Nick’s booming voice. “Silas! Silas, where are you?”

“Nick, stopped shouting.” Victoria was holding Sam’s hand and she could tell the child was startled by the loud voice.

“I wasn’t expecting you home so soon.” He stopped in front of them and his attention immediately turned to the young girl.

“Nick, this is Sam.” He smiled but she wouldn’t look at him. “She’s a bit shy” Victoria explained, “but she’ll come around.”

“Mother.” Audra came bounding down the staircase. “And you must be Samantha.” She bent down and impulsively kissed the child.

“Audra, it was a long trip. Can you take Sam upstairs and help her get cleaned up and changed for dinner?”

Audra nodded as she grabbed the small suitcase out of Jarrod’s hand. She held out her other hand to Samantha.

“It’s ok Sam. Go with her and get cleaned up.”

She took the outstretched hand and walked with Audra upstairs.

“She does talk, doesn’t she?” Nick waited until they were far enough away.

“Yes Nick, she talks.” Jarrod slapped him on the back. “Have we missed anything around here?”

“Just a lot of work.” He aimed that comment at Heath, who silently leaned against the door.

“I think I’ll go get started now.” Before they could stop him Heath was out the door.

“What’s his problem?” Nick asked.

“He’s taking all this very hard Nick” Jarrod explained. “He’s confused and he feels guilty about everything that has happened to his sister. Just be patient with him for a few days.”

Before Nick could respond Audra came running downstairs.  “Mother!”

“What’s wrong?” Victoria immediately thought it was Sam.

Audra approached them. “That child is nothing but skin and bones. Who’s been feeding her?”

Victoria visibly relaxed. “I know.” She touched her daughter’s arm. “Don’t worry, home cooking will fatten her up.”

“As long as Audra’s not cooking,” Nick muttered, wincing when his sister hit him.

“I better get back to the other child” she stated, with her eyes clearly on Nick.

Jarrod and Victoria followed, wanting to freshen up before dinner.

 * * * * *

It was an hour after dinner when Nick found Heath in the north pasture, banging away at a post.

“Heath it’s dark out and this can wait until the morning.” Heath ignored him and continued to hammer in the post. Finally Nick reached over and grabbed the hammer away. “I said this could wait. Now let’s go home.”

“Nick, leave me alone before I do something we’ll both be sorry for.”

Nick heard the menacing tone and grinned. “Go ahead and try. Or you could be civil and tell me what’s bothering you.” He put his hand on Heath’s shoulder.

“The only thing bothering me is you.” Roughly, Heath pushed his brother away. “Go away and I’ll be fine.”

Nick stood his ground, arms folded across his chest. “Heath, you didn’t say a word during dinner. I thought maybe you and Samantha were having a contest to see who said the fewest words.”

“Leave her out of this.” Heath pointed a finger at Nick’s chest. “I’m warning you Nick, I’m not in the mood for this.”

“So I’ve noticed.” Nick refused to budge, still grinning at his brother. “I think I’ll stick around and make sure you get home safely. We wouldn’t want a wild animal to eat you.”

“I give up.” Heath kicked at the post and then started walking towards his horse.

“Wait one minute.” Nick grabbed him. “You’re not leaving until you talk to me.”

“I warned you.” With a quick right Heath connected with Nick’s jaw, sending him sprawling to the ground.

“Why you.” Nick shot up and quickly knocked his brother to the ground.

They wrestled for a few minutes until Heath easily gave up.

“Had enough?” Nick asked as he checked his mouth, feeling around for blood. Satisfied that there was none, he grabbed Heath and hauled him to his feet.  “Heath are you ok?”

“No.” Heath staggered away from his brother. Suddenly he turned and faced Nick. “You wanna play big brother, fine. Tell me why my sister didn’t tell them she had a mother and a brother. Why didn’t she tell them where she lived?” Heath grabbed Nick’s collar. “Why did she suffer all that time in that damn orphanage and never mention she had a family?”

“I don’t know” Nick whispered as Heath let him go. “Maybe she forgot where she lived. Heath she was five years old and her father was killed in front of her. Isn’t it possible she forgot?”

“No.” Heath firmly shook his head. “You grow up in a town called Strawberry and you don’t forget. Nick, she knew where she was from and she didn’t tell anybody and I have to find out why.”

He again headed for his horse but Nick interceded.  “Heath, don’t let this eat you up. Give her time and then ask her yourself.”

“I can’t.” Heath closed his eyes and took a deep breath. “I can’t even look at her without feeling I’m somehow to blame for what happened.” He looked his brother in the eyes. “If that were Audra you would not have given up until you found her. I did. I did give up. I let Sam down and I can’t forgive myself for that.”

Nick roughly grabbed his shoulders.  “You are not going to do this. Do you understand me? Heath, this isn’t going to help anyone, especially Samantha.” Nick smiled. “Let’s go into town and get a drink. What do you say?”

“OK Nick.”

Nick slapped him on the back. “It will make you feel better, you’ll see.”

Heath doubted that but he remained silent as they mounted up and rode away.

 * * * * *

Jarrod heard a sound and looked up to see Sam standing in the doorway. “Having trouble sleeping?”

She nodded and then walked in to the study.

“I bet this place is too quiet, right?”

Sam shrugged as she looked around the study.

Jarrod noticed her robe was way too big and assumed it was Audra’s old one.

Sam walked over to the books and started fingering them.

Jarrod walked over and searched for a book on the top shelf.  “This was one of Audra’s favorite books when she was a child. Do you want me to read it to you?”

Sam shrugged again.

“You sure don’t like to talk, do you?” Jarrod didn’t expect an answer and he didn’t get one. Sam was still checking out the books so Jarrod left and returned with a blanket. He sat down behind the desk. “Sam, come here.”

She thought it over before nearing Jarrod. He lifted her into his lap and settled the blanket on top. Clearing his throat, Jarrod started reading.

“Where’s Nick and Heath?”

Jarrod wasn’t sure. “I think they’re in town” he answered.

“Why does Heath hate me?”

“What?” Jarrod gently turned Sam so he could see her face. “Heath doesn’t hate you. Why would you say that?”

“I don’t know.” She turned and leaned back against Jarrod.

He knew that was the end of the conversation so he started reading again. He was only through 10 pages when Sam’s breathing changed and he knew she was sleeping. Jarrod put the book down and wrapped his arms around the little girl. He would wait until she was soundly asleep before taking her up to bed.

Morning didn’t seem to find anyone in better moods. Sam picked at her food while Nick and Heath drank coffee, nursing their hangovers.

“Samantha, after breakfast I’m going to take you to see the doctor.”

“Why?” Sam dropped her fork and stared at Victoria.

“I want to get your wrists checked out.” Sam lowered her head. Victoria reached over and touched her arm. “Honey, we just want to make sure they’re healing properly. Afterwards, Audra and I will take you shopping to get you some new clothes.”

“I don’t have any money,” Sam whispered. “How do I pay for the food?” She motioned towards her plate.

“Sam, why would ask that?”

She glanced over at Jarrod. “Nothing is for free,” she stated.

Jarrod smiled slightly and then looked at his mother for help.

“Samantha, look at me.” She stared at Victoria. “You are part of this family and you don’t have to pay for your food or clothing or anything else.” She paused briefly. “But this is a working ranch and I’m sure Nick can find some chores for you to do, right Nick?”

“Huh?” Nick wearily looked over.

“Can you find some chores for Sam to do around the ranch?”

He glanced over at the child and then back at his mother.  “Sure. After breakfast I’ll show her around and we’ll figure something out.”

“Thank you Nick. Samantha, we’ll leave in an hour.”

Breakfast was quickly finished and Sam followed Nick and Heath outside.

“I’m going to finish up the fence.”

Samantha watched Heath walk away. “He didn’t say goodbye,” she whispered.

“He’s tired from last night.” Nick tousled her hair. “Let’s walk around and see what you can do.”

They entered the barn and the horses immediately intrigued Sam. She reached up but was afraid to touch the horse.

“He’s gentle.” Nick lifted her up until she was face to face with the horse. “Go ahead and touch his nose.”

Tentatively she reached over and very gently stroked the horse, giggling softly.

“Sam, can you ride a horse?”

She shook her head. “Heath used to take me out with him, but never by myself.”

Nick put her down. “Would you like to ride with me?”

She turned and stared up at him. “Really?”

“Sure. We have a little time before you need to leave. Back away and let me get the horse ready.”

Sam watched as he quickly saddled the horse and led him out. Nick lifted the child up and then mounted behind her.

“Are you ok?”

She nodded so Nick kicked the horse to get it moving.  “Can we go faster?”

Nick was glad to see she was enjoying it. “We can, but I’ll need to hold on to you.”

“OK.”

Nick wrapped his arm around her as the horse went faster. She giggled and Nick couldn’t help but smile, pleased that Sam was having fun. The time went fast and Victoria came over to meet them as they dismounted the horse.

“I was riding” she exclaimed proudly. “Nick, can we do it again?”

“Sure thing.” He patted her head.

“We forgot about my chores.” The smile left her face. “Nick, what can I do?”

Suddenly he bent over and picked Sam up. “We’ll figure that out later. But I do expect something every time I take you riding.”

“What?” Sam asked.

“A kiss and hug. Do you think you can do that?”

Without hesitation she gave him a kiss on the cheek and wrapped her small arms around his neck. Nick hugged back noticing his mother was smiling broadly.

“I think I could get used to that,” Nick said as Sam scooted out of his arms. “Better get to work.” Nick mounted his horse and rode out to find his brother.

 * * * * *

It was late afternoon when Victoria, Audra and Sam returned home. She sent her daughter and Sam upstairs and searched the house for her sons. She found Jarrod and Nick in the study, discussing an upcoming cattle drive.

“Is Heath home?”

“No Mother, he’s still out in the fields. What’s wrong?” Jarrod approached her.

Victoria took off her gloves and sat down. “I got some disturbing news at the doctor’s office.”

“What?” Nick moved closer. “Is Sam ok?”

“Besides being small for her age and underweight, she’s fine.”

“What is it then?” Jarrod asked.

“The doc checked her wrists and the cuts were too deep. He doesn’t see how a child her size could have done it to herself.” Victoria glanced at her sons. “Maybe one wrist but not two. She would not have had the strength to cut both of them.”

“Mother, what is he suggesting? That someone tried to kill that child?” As incredulous as Nick’s questions sounded, it was the thought on all their minds.

Victoria nodded slightly. “He questioned her but she wouldn’t say anything and he didn’t want to push her. I think when she trusts us more, we need to bring up the subject and hopefully get some answers.”

“I don’t think we should tell Heath” Nick added. “He’s already beating himself up over Sam’s condition and this might put him over the edge.”

“What would put me over the edge?” They turned to see Heath standing there.

Knowing she had no choice, Victoria quickly related the doctor’s thoughts.

Heath quietly mulled over the new information.  “Sam didn’t have to be there,” he muttered before walking out.

Shocked, the others could only look at each other and shake their heads.

Part 3

Nick stood up slowly, making as little noise as possible. He glanced at the bed and Sam seemed to be sleeping peacefully. She had been with them for two weeks and in so many ways still a mystery. It was the second night when she couldn’t sleep that they learned about the bad people that were out there. Sam would only say that they would come at night and she was afraid to fall asleep. The family tried to get her to admit a connection between her fears and her wrists but the child would not say any more. They had started taking turns staying with Sam until she fell asleep and usually she would sleep the whole night.

Nick accidentally kicked the bed and was greeted with a quiet growl. He turned to see Lucky awake and staring at him. Nick bent over and gently petted the dog until he settled back against the child. Nick had brought the puppy home thinking it would make Sam feel safer, but she had rightfully pointed out that the dog was too small and had to be protected from the bad people also. Jarrod howled with laughter as the child outsmarted his brother. Sam took to the puppy right away but it didn’t relieve her nighttime fears one bit. Nick fixed the blankets satisfied that she was sound to sleep.

“Stay with her.” Lucky didn’t bother to open his eyes. He kissed Sam lightly on the cheek and for a few minutes just watched her sleep. Whether he wanted to admit it or not, the child had stolen his heart…and it had happened so quickly that he never saw it coming. Every day Nick looked forward to their ride together and the childish chatter that never seemed to end and was so different from the quiet child that barely said a word the first couple of days. The whole family had taken to the child and each seemed to have a special way to spend time with her. Heath was the exception and no one could get through to him.

With everything he didn’t know about Sam, Nick felt he knew her better than he knew his younger brother. He tried to get Heath to open up but the more Sam talked, the less Heath did. He spent most of his time out in the fields, claiming to work on jobs that Nick knew didn’t exist. They were excuses to keep him away from the house and they all knew that. Lately, Sam had been questioning Heath’s whereabouts and on more than one occasion asked why her brother hated her. It was usually on their daily rides and Nick never knew what to say, he could only hold her tighter and hope that would slightly comfort her. Shaking his head, Nick came back to present time and kissed Sam once more before walking out of the room. He headed downstairs where he found Jarrod sitting in the study.

“Has the guard dog learned how to bark?”

Nick glared at him. “Jarrod, don’t start with me.”

“Is Silas still mad at you?”

Nick threw his arms up in disgust. “How was I to know that Sam was going to sleep on the floor with that dog?” Nick couldn’t help but smile when he remembered how exasperated their mother was to find Sam sleeping on the floor and how angry Silas was when she relented and allowed the dog on the bed.

He heard the front door open and glanced out to see Heath walking in.

“Heath! Where have you been?”

Heath ignored him and tried to walk by, but Nick got in the way.

“I asked you where you were.”

“Out” Heath muttered as Jarrod separated his two brothers.

“Heath please come into the study and talk to us.”

His eyes wandered from Jarrod to Nick and seemingly defeated, Heath entered the study.

“I’m in no mood for this.” Heath folded his arms as he glared at his brothers. “Make this fast because I’m tired and I want to go to bed.”

Nick and Jarrod exchanged glances, silently wondering who would go first. Jarrod stepped forward. “Heath, it’s bad enough that we know you’re avoiding your sister, but she knows too, and after everything she’s been through.” Jarrod placed a hand on Heath’s shoulder. “You have to talk this out if you’re going to get over it.”

“I can’t.” Heath shook his shoulder free. “I can’t explain it because I don’t understand it myself.” Heath pointed to his head. “Everything just feels wrong up here and I keep going back there in my mind and trying to figure out what was wrong.” This was the most Heath had spoken in days and neither brother wanted to interrupt.   “There has to be a reason why Samantha didn’t want to go back to Strawberry and I have to find out the truth.”

Heath stopped suddenly and stared at the doorway. His brothers turned and they all stared at the child standing there. She put the dog down but kept her eyes on Heath.

“Sam, what are you doing up?” Jarrod approached her but she ignored the question.

Nick decided this would be the best time to finally get the truth out.  “Samantha, we know you heard what Heath said. Can you tell us why you didn’t want to go home after your daddy died?”

Sam didn’t seem to know who to look at and finally her eyes settled on Lucky, who stood beside her.

“Sam, please.” Nick knelt in front of her and stroked her cheek. “Sam, we all need to know the truth. Why didn’t you tell them you had a mother and brother back in Strawberry?”

Sam kept her eyes downward. “My brother wasn’t there and my mother hated me.” Her quiet voice penetrated the room.

“That’s a lie.” Heath’s voice rose angrily. “Your father filled your head with lies about our mother.”

Sam shook her head. “He hated me too.”

Jarrod and Nick remained silent, neither knowing what to say.

“Sam, your mother loved you.” Heath neared his sister.

“You weren’t there.” Sam was shouting now. “You don’t know anything. My parents hated me and they hated each other. I never want to see her.”

“Samantha, our mother is dead.”

The little girl hadn’t known the fate of her mother and for a moment she seemed sad about the news. “I don’t care.” Defiantly she stared at Heath who momentarily lost control and slapped her across the face.

“Heath!” Jarrod grabbed him as Sam ran out of the room. “She’s a child, you don’t need to hit her.”

Heath pulled away. “She’s lying. Her father filled her head with lies. I have to go talk to her.”

“Let her be.” This time Nick blocked his way. “You need to calm down before talking to her. She’s only a child and maybe they are lies. Or it could be the truth” Nick quietly suggested. “But getting angry and hitting her is not going to help this situation. Calm down and then go talk to her.”

“I’m going to find Sam.” Jarrod walked out and saw the open front door. Lucky stood there, afraid to go outside. “Nick! Heath!” The urgency in his voice brought them running. Immediately they understood as all three grabbed their jackets. “Split up and look everyone” Jarrod shouted as they headed into the darkness.

 * * * * *

Two hours later the family was gathered in Samantha’s room as Victoria tended to Sam’s cuts and scrapes. Jarrod had told her what had happened and she was quite concerned about the child, who had not spoken since Jarrod had carried her home. They all hovered over her, except for Heath. He had stayed long enough to find out Sam would be fine before quickly leaving the room.

“That should do it.” Victoria closed up the ointment and put it to the side.

Jarrod knelt down in front of the child. “Samantha, look at me.” She didn’t move. “Sam, now.” Something in his voice made her obey. “You do not go outside in the dark by yourself. Do you understand?” Jarrod impatiently waited for her to answer. “Sam, answer me. Do you understand?”

“Yes, sir,” she whispered.

Jarrod smiled as he touched the child’s face. “Sam, it’s too dangerous out there and we don’t want to see you get hurt.” Jarrod leaned over and kissed her forehead.

“Do I have to go back tomorrow?”

“Back where?” Nick roughly sat on the bed.

“The orphanage” Sam answered. “I was bad so I have to go back.”

“Of course not.” Nick lifted the child into his lap. “Why would you say that?”

Sam leaned against Nick, once again feeling safe. “I saw it all the time. Bad kids always came back. I don’t want to go back there.”

“Samantha, what did you do that was bad?”

The child couldn’t look at Victoria. “I wasn’t supposed to tell Heath. Mama made me promise. So did Hannah.” Sam looked up at Nick. “I won’t tell him anymore I promise.”

Nick glanced at the doorway and caught a glimpse of Heath before he moved away. “Jarrod, take Samantha.” He handed the child to his brother.

Heath was standing in the hallway, leaning against the wall.

“Heath she’s going to be fine. How are you?” Nick didn’t need an answer to know how his brother was doing. “Heath, what are you going to do next?”

Heath shrugged slightly. “Go to the source to find out the truth.” He walked away and Nick stood there until Heath’s bedroom door shut tight.

Nick returned to the child’s room and bid his mother and Audra goodnight. Sam was curled up in Jarrod’s arms, already asleep. He shook his head when he saw the dog; stretched out on the bed, tail wagging. Nick headed for his room, hoping for a little sleep before the sun came up.

 * * * * *

Nick was outside and waiting when he saw Heath enter the barn. A few minutes later his brother rode away and Nick followed. They were about two miles away from the ranch when Nick pulled up along side of his brother. Heath must have known he was being followed because he wasn’t surprised to see Nick beside him.

“Nick, why are you following me?” Heath stopped his horse.

“I thought you might like some company.” Nick smiled slightly.

“I don’t. Go home.” Heath started up again and Nick easily kept up.

“I think you might need me when we get to Strawberry.”

“Why?” Once again Heath stopped. “Do you really think what Sam said is the truth?”

Nick nodded. “I do and…”

“I don’t.” Heath interrupted. “And I don’t want you around when I talk to Hannah.” Heath took off at full speed, hoping to deter his brother.

Heath sensed that Nick was always there but he ignored him and kept his focus on the task ahead of him. It was turning dark when he arrived in Strawberry and so many old feelings pulsed through him. Heath had always hated this town and time hadn’t changed that. He had to go past his old house before reaching Hannah and he paused briefly.

“It looks even smaller than when I lived here.” Heath didn’t turn but he knew Nick was there, as he had been the whole trip.

Heath turned the horse and headed towards Hannah’s house. There he dismounted and tapped on the door. It took a few minutes for the old lady to answer the door and another minute before she recognized Heath. When she did her face lit up.

“Heath! What are you doing here?” She glanced over at Nick.

“That’s my brother Nick. Hannah can we come in?”

She moved and they followed her into the house.

“Are you hungry. You must be hungry, let me get you some food.” She started fussing in the kitchen until Heath stopped her.

“Hannah, please. I don’t want any food.” He took her arm. “I need to ask you some questions about Sam. You remember Sam, right?”

She stared at him as she tried to place the name.  “My poor baby” she muttered, and then turned her back on Heath.

He stared at Nick who surprisingly was quiet.

“Hannah? What’s wrong?”

She turned and he saw tears in her eyes. “My poor baby” she repeated, and then started pacing.

Heath sighed loudly, and then took a deep breath. “Hannah, Samantha is fine.”

Heath was surprised to hear his brother’s voice. Nick moved towards the old woman. “Sam is fine but she told us her parents hated her and we need to know if that’s true.”

“A mother doesn’t hate her own child.” Hannah addressed Heath. “Leave the past alone. It’s better left there.”

“I can’t. Hannah what aren’t you telling me?”

Nick could sense his brother was losing his patience and he pushed him away from the old lady. “Take it easy with her.”

“Stay out of this.” Heath shoved past his brother and confronted Hannah again. “Samantha was always happy when I was here. Why was that?”

“Because she was. She loved you so much.” Hannah smiled. “And your mama was so happy to see you and he would go away.” Her smile left her face. “He was a monster…he took my baby away from me.”

This time Nick sighed, realizing they were getting nowhere. Heath too was frustrated and he sat down heavily in the chair.

Hannah went back to the vegetables she was cutting before being interrupted. After a few minutes of silence she put the knife down and neared Heath.  “It’s hard raising a child by yourself and your mama couldn’t do it again.”

Heath’s eyes widened. “She was pregnant before she got married?”

Hannah nodded. “We told her not to marry him but she was tired and…he was a monster and he treated her bad.” Heath clenched his fists. “All the yelling and that poor child crying in the darkness. I took her in and I held her and wiped her tears and promised it would get better, but it never did.” Hannah seemed lost in the past as the memories poured out of her. “The nights were bad with the yelling and he would hit her…”

“Did he hit Sam too?”

Hannah stared at Nick, seemingly confused.

“Did he hit Sam too?” Nick asked again.

Hannah slowly nodded. “Her mama tried to protect her and would send her outside and tell her to come to me.” Hannah crossed her arms and rocked, as if she had a baby in her arms. “I would always go looking for her and she’d be sitting on the steps crying.” Hannah stopped moving. “She was just a baby and she didn’t understand.”

When Hannah didn’t say more Heath stood up and neared her. “Why didn’t anybody tell me?”

Hannah lowered her head.

“Hannah, answer me!” Heath’s voice cracked with anger as he grabbed the woman. Nick tried to intervene but Heath wouldn’t let go. Nick backed off, knowing his effort was making it worse. “Answer me.”

“Sam wanted to tell you but her mama said no. I said no. Heath we were protecting you too.”

Heath backed away. “Protecting me? Protecting me from what?”

“Your mama was afraid that you would kill him and end up in jail.”

Heath slammed his fist against the wall, crying out in pain. “You should have told me.” Nick saw the tears running down Heath’s face. “I would have protected them. You had no right…none of you did.” He bolted out of the house before Nick could stop him.

“It was the best for everyone” Hannah insisted after Heath had left. “Her mama loved her but it’s so hard…” She hesitated briefly. “Sam looked so much like her father.” Hannah lowered her head. “Maybe she loved Heath more.”

It was barely a whisper but Nick heard. He imagined it was because she loved Heath’s father but he kept that opinion to himself. “Hannah, you did what you could for that child.” He placed a hand on the old woman’s shoulder. “Sam is going to be fine. She has a family now and all the love she’ll ever need.” An idea suddenly came to him. “Would you like to go visit her? Stay for a few days at our house?”

Hannah nodded her head, smiling. “I need to see her with my own eyes. Make sure she’s ok.”

“We’ll leave first thing in the morning.” Nick headed for the door. “Now I need to go find my brother.”

He found Heath sitting on the steps of the house he grew up in. Nick watched him for a few minutes, not sure what he should do. With Jarrod it would be simple but with Heath he just wasn’t sure. This brother was still so new to him. Nick took a deep breath. Regardless, Heath was his brother and Nick was going to do whatever he could to help him. Heath didn’t look up but he sniffled and wiped his face when he heard Nick approach him.

“How are you doing?” Nick asked as he sat down next to Heath. “Sam is going to be just fine.” Heath continued to stare at his feet, crying softly. “Heath, you have a right to be upset about this.”

“I don’t need your approval.” Heath’s voice was strong despite the flowing tears.

“No, you don’t.” Nick inched closer to his brother. “Heath, what do you need from me?”

“Nothing.” Heath’s voice cracked and more tears fell despite all his efforts to stop them.

Tentatively Nick put his arm around his brother.

“Don’t.” It was a feeble attempt to push Nick away.

Nick not only held on tighter but he pulled Heath towards him and wrapped his other arm around his younger brother. “It’s ok,” he whispered into Heath’s ear.

Nick wasn’t sure how long he held his brother or when the crying stopped but he felt the extreme awkwardness that developed when Heath pushed himself away. Silently they sat there, neither knowing how to break the silence. Finally Nick stood up and stretched.  “I’m going to find a nice spot to set up camp. Are you coming?”

Heath shook his head.

“Heath, you have to get some sleep. We’ll leave early in the morning and Hannah is going to come with us. She really wants to see Sam.”

“I’m staying here.”

“What?” Nick sat back down. “Of course you’re coming home. Heath, there’s nothing here for you.”

“I have to stay here and figure things out.”

Nick rolled his eyes. “There’s nothing to figure out. Your family is in Stockton and that’s where you’re going.”

Heath stood. “Nick, try to understand.”

Nick stood up also and eyed his brother. “I don’t understand but I won’t force you to go.” Nick smiled. “Not that I could force you to do anything. But I want a promise from you.”

“What?” Heath braced himself for whatever was coming.

“Promise me you’ll come home.”

Heath visibly relaxed. “I don’t have anywhere else to go.” That didn’t seem to satisfy Nick. “I promise I’ll come home.”

Nick smiled. “Good. Now let’s go find some place to bed down for the night.” He pointed towards the vacant house. “Unless you want to sleep in there.”

Heath didn’t bother to answer. He walked off, away from the house with Nick following him.

Part 4

Nick opened the front door and allowed Hannah to walk in first.

“Anyone home?” He heard footsteps and then Sam appeared from the kitchen. She stopped suddenly when she saw Hannah.

“Hannah!” The old lady fell to her knees as Samantha jumped into her arms. Victoria entered the living room at that moment and silently watched the scene before her. To the surprise of both Nick and Victoria Sam started sobbing and clung to the old woman. Hannah patted the child’s back as she rocked back and forth. Nick walked over to his mother.

“I wasn’t expecting this.” Nick glanced over at the child who was still crying, her head lying on Hannah’s shoulder. When Sam seemed calmer Victoria walked over and handed some tissues to Hannah. She wiped her own face and then gently cleaned Sam’s face. Nick watched from afar, his concern for the child growing. Finally he had enough, walked over and knelt down next to them.

“Hey Sami.” Lightly he touched the child’s face. “I think Hannah is getting tired of sitting on the floor. Can I pick you up?” Sam held out one arm and Nick lifted her into his arms. “I’ve missed you,” he whispered as Sam laid her head on his shoulder.

As Nick went to sit down he saw Hannah follow Victoria into the other room.

“Sam, why are you crying?” He forced Sam up so he could see her face.

“Seeing Hannah I remember too much.” Sam sniffled. “I’m glad she’s here but…” She started crying again and wrapped her arms around Nick, again laying her head on his shoulder.

Nick didn’t have a clue what he should say. As with Heath he wanted so badly to help and he didn’t know how.

“Hannah makes the best cookies.” Sam pulled away with a slight smile on her face. “I used to help her make them.”

Nick kissed her forehead. “If she wants to I’m sure Silas will let her make them.”

Sam looked around. “Is Heath working?”

“Heath stayed in Strawberry.”

The smile slowly left Sam’s face. “Is he coming back? Nick I don’t want him to go away again.” Sam jumped off of his lap.

“He’s coming back. He promised.” Nick noticed a strange look on the child’s face. “Sam, what is it?” She shook her head. “You can tell me.”

“He doesn’t always keep his promises. Can’t you go get him?” Sam placed her hands on her hips.

Nick couldn’t help but laugh at her serious tone. “Sam, Hannah came all this way to see you. When I take her back I’ll make sure I bring Heath home. Is that ok?”

“I guess.” Sam moved a little closer and Nick took the opportunity to grab her.

“I’m going to tickle you until you start laughing.” Sam was on the floor giggling when Jarrod came home.

“Nick, good to see you back. Is Heath with you?”

“He’s in Strawberry” Sam stated glumly as she stood up. “But Hannah is here and we’re going to make cookies.”

Jarrod glanced over at Nick before smiling down at the child. “Sam, go find Hannah and let me talk to Nick, ok?”

Sam frowned but she did as told and walked out of the room.

“What’s going on?”

As briefly as he could Nick explained what had happened in Strawberry.

Jarrod’s face was a mixture of anger and concern. “What do you make of all this?”

“I don’t know.” Nick shrugged. “I know that kid has been through a lot and Heath is probably blaming himself for it all. I wish Robert Mills were still alive so I could kill him myself. Jarrod I don’t know how to help either of them and it’s killing me.”

“Hey.” Jarrod grasped his brother’s shoulder. “That kid adores you and making her laugh is the best medicine anyone could give her. As for Heath…” Jarrod frowned. “We’ll find a way to help him get through this.”

Sam came running back in the room. “Nick, Hannah is resting…will you take me riding?”

Nick needed to get back to work but he couldn’t say no to her.  “A short ride but that’s it.”

“Yippee.” Sam jumped up and down. “I need to go find my boots.”

“She’s not the problem,” Nick admitted after Sam ran out of the room. Jarrod silently nodded his head as Nick left the room.

 * * * * *

Heath stood outside the house debating his options. Go in or stay outside were his choices and slowly he climbed the stairs and entered. The house was still so familiar as Heath walked around the small rooms. He eyed the corner near the kitchen and his mind wandered back over seven years.

Heath entered the house and smiled slightly when he saw his mother. “Mother.”

She turned and her face lit up. “Heath!” She ran to him and hugged him tightly. Then she pulled back and looked him over. “My god Heath. You’re so thin. What happened to you?”

Later he would tell her about the war and the horrors of the prison but right now it was too recent and too painful to talk about. He heard crying and looked around the room. “Ma, what’s that?”

Leah moved towards the crying and opened the hanging curtain. She lifted a baby and carried it back to Heath. “Heath, this is your sister Samantha.” Leah almost laughed at the look on her son’s face.

“Have I been gone that long?” Leah nodded. “She’s six months old and quite a handful.”

“Ma, a baby?” Heath just stared at the child, and then glanced around the house. “The father is?” Heath paused. “Ma, who's the child’s father?”

Leah calmed the baby down and then handed her to Heath.

“Ma, I don’t know how to hold her.” Heath looked so uncomfortable as he tried to figure out what to do with the baby.

“Support her head.” Leah showed him how and it took a few minutes until Heath felt comfortable enough to continue the conversation.

“Mother, you haven’t answered my question.” Leah was busy watching her children together, so happy to have her son home. “Ma!” Heath had always been impatient and that hadn’t changed. The door opened and a tall man walked in.

“Heath, this is my husband Robert.” He held out his hand and Heath just looked at it. “You’re married?” Heath stared at his mother.

“Friendly, isn’t he?”

Heath spun around and stared at the man. He handed the baby back to his mother and bolted out the door. Heath would not return for nearly a year.

Heath snapped back to the present and realized he had tears rolling down his cheeks. He wished he had grabbed that baby and run as far as he could. But he hadn’t and Sam suffered because of him.

 * * * * *

Victoria was surprised to find both her sons awake and having a drink in the study.

“Mother?” Jarrod looked up when she walked in. “Why are you still awake?”

Victoria frowned as she settled into a chair. “Samantha is wound up and can’t sleep.”

“Sam?” Nick stood up. “She was asleep hours ago.”

“Was is right.” Victoria sighed. “I checked on her before going to bed and she was up and staring out the window. One minute she’s talking about Heath and the next about the orphanage she thinks she has to go back to.” Victoria crossed her arms.

“She still thinks we’re taking her back?” Jarrod stood up and started pacing. He stared at his mother for a moment. “You do know we can change that?”

Victoria nodded.

“Can you enlighten me then?” Nick stared at them, hands on his hips.

“When we brought Sam here Mother became her guardian.”

“I know that,” Nick spit out. “Go on.”

“Give me a chance” Jarrod countered ignoring the look Nick gave him. “The guardianship is temporary based on how things go with Sam and the family. Mother can legally adopt her which would make her a Barkley and hopefully alleviate her fears of being sent back.”

Nick looked at his mother. “What are we waiting for? We all know that Sam isn’t going anywhere right?” Neither answered him.

“Nick, it’s not that simple.” Jarrod lightly placed a hand on his brother’s shoulder. “This has to be a family decision and right now one of us can’t vote.”

“Heath” Nick whispered.

Jarrod nodded.

“Oh come on.” Nick walked towards his mother. “You know damn well that Heath wants his sister here…he just needs time to get over what he learned.”

Victoria stood up. “Heath has a say in this and until we know how he feels we don’t do or say anything about this to Sam. Ok? Nick?”

“I’m going to check on Sam.” Nick walked out abruptly. He climbed the stairs two at a time and headed straight for the child’s room. At first he thought the room was empty but then he saw Sam sitting on the floor, partially hidden by the bed.

“Sam, what are you doing down there?” He bent over and easily picked up the child. “We need to fatten you up.” Nick carried Sam over to the chair. He sat down carefully with her in his arms.

“I wanna be alone.” She tried to get out of his arms but Nick held her firmly. “Leave me alone.” Sam continued to struggle while Nick silently held her close. Finally she gave up and stopped moving, breathing hard from her struggles.

“Are you done?” Nick gently kissed the top of her head. “Sam, it’s way past your bedtime and you need to be up early to do your chores and then you have your lessons…”

“I don’t want to read.” They had just discovered that morning that Sam couldn’t read or write and it was decided that Audra would teach her until she caught up to children her own age. “I don’t wanna go to school.” Nick wasn’t surprised. Sam had made it quite clear that she wanted nothing do with other children.

“Sam, what do you want to do?”

“Find Heath.” Sam looked up so hopefully that Nick hated to dash her hope.

“Sam, I’ve already told you that Heath is fine and I’ll bring him home in a few days.”

“I don’t like you.” Nick had loosened his grip and Sam took the opportunity to jump off his lap. She jumped on the bed and scooted under the covers. “Leave me alone.” Sam brought the covers over her head.

Nick sighed loudly as he stood up. “Goodnight Sam.” He was too tired to deal with an eight year old and he headed off to bed.

 * * * * *

Heath stared up at the stars, unable to fall asleep. He had spent the day trying to remember the past. Trying to remember anything that would have clued him in to what was going on with his sister and mother. Heath closed his eyes, hoping to fall asleep. Instead, more memories came rushing back.

Heath stood outside the house and turned when he heard a noise.

“Heath.” Hannah neared him, a small child in her arms.

“Is that Sam?”

Hannah nodded as she put the child down. “She’s walking and talking and into everything.”

The child wobbled towards Heath, stopping in front of him. He noticed the green eyes, sparkling and so full of life.

“Sam, this is your brother.”

Heath knelt down in front of the child. “Hi Sam.”

“Hi.” Sam watched him as Heath stood back up.

“Where’s my mother?”

“They’re away for a few days” Hannah answered.

“Away where? They left the child alone?”

Hannah shook her head. “Heath, I’m taking care of Sam and I don’t know where they went.”

“Horsey.” Sam noticed Heath’s horse and walked towards the animal.

“Be careful.” Heath scooped up the child before she got hurt.

“Horsey.” She reached out.

“Do you want to go for a ride?” Heath glanced over his shoulder. “Can I take her for a ride?”

Hannah nodded. “Just be careful.”

Heath picked up the child and mounted his horse. Slowly they rode away, the child giggling the whole time.

Heath opened his eyes. He had spent two weeks getting to know his sister until his mother and Robert Mills had returned home. After a day of fighting with Sam’s father, Heath had taken off again but he returned home often to spend time with Sam.

“Heaf.” Sam ran towards her brother as fast as her three-year-old legs would allow her. “Heaf.”

Heath picked her up and hugged her tightly.

“Heaf, you staying?”

“For a little while. Where’s Ma?”

Sam shrugged. “Take me riding.” She wriggled until Heath let her down and she ran towards the horse.

“Don’t go too close.” Heath picked her up.

“Put me down.”

Heath obliged

“Heath!” He turned to see his mother rushing towards him. “It’s a surprise to see you here.” She gave him a quick kiss.

“Ma, what happened to your face?” She put a hand up to her cheek and smiled. “You know me. I tried to get a canister from the top shelf and it fell and hit me here. I’ll be fine. How have you been?”

“Heaf, let’s go.” Sam tugged at his pants.

“Samantha, pronounce his name right. It’s Heath.” Sam turned to see her father towering over her.

“Heath, take your sister riding. Now.”

“Ma!”

“Heath, now.” Confused he picked up the child and quickly mounted the horse.

Heath bolted upright. The signs were there but he hadn’t seen it. He had spent nearly a month with his mother and sister and Mills had disappeared for the whole time. Heath stood up.

“I should have known!” he screamed into the darkness. “Ma, I’m sorry.” Heath kicked at the ground before walking away.

 * * * * *

Nick was up early and decided to do some work before breakfast. He returned to find no one around.

“Is anybody awake?” He shouted as he walked through the house.

“Nick, keep your voice down.” Victoria slowly walked down the stairs. “We know why Sam was so disagreeable last night.”

“Why? What’s wrong?” Nick picked up an apple and took a large bite.

“Sam is running a fever.”

“How bad?” Nick quickly threw the apple away. “I’ll go get the doctor.”

Victoria grabbed his arm.  “Audra already went. Nick, she’s crying out for Heath. I think you should go get him.”

“I want to see Sam first.” He bounded up the stairs.

Both Hannah and Jarrod were in the little girl’s room. Sam was still in bed her back to the door.

“Hey Sam.” Nick neared the bed and carefully sat down. “How do you feel?”

She turned and faced him but remained silent.

“I’m going to get Heath and bring him home.”

She smiled slightly before closing her eyes.

Nick glanced at his brother and saw the worried look on his face.  “Is she strong enough to fight this?” Nick neared his brother.

“We better hope so” Jarrod whispered, his eyes still on the child.

“I need to get to Strawberry.” He glanced back at the sleeping child before hurrying out of the room.

 * * * * *

Heath knew where he would find Sam…down by the pond on her swing.

“Sam, are you going to say goodbye to me?”

She knew he was leaving and she was extremely upset about it. She ignored his question as he neared her.

“Sam, I’ll be back in a few weeks for your birthday. There’s this job and I have to go.” He walked around until he was in front of her. “Sam, please don’t cry.”

Silent tears fell down the child’s face. She looked up at him and it tore at his heart. “Don’t leave me. Heath please.”

Heath lifted the child up and hugged her tightly. He walked towards the pond with Sam in his arms.

“Sam, this job is really important and I’ll make a lot of money and you’ll love the present I get for you.”

“I don’t want a present. I want you to stay.” She wiggled out of his arms and picked up a rock. She threw it into the water and watched it skip a few times.

“Heath, why can’t you stay here?”

Heath couldn’t tell Sam it was because of her father. “This isn’t my home,” he said quietly.

“Take me with you.” Sam wrapped her arms around Heath’s legs. “Don’t leave me here” she begged.

Heath lifted her up again and then sat down in the grass. It was a place they both loved and came too often. Silently they watched some ducks swim in the pond. It was getting late and Heath knew he had to get going soon.

“Sam I’ll be back in a few weeks for your birthday.”

She looked up at him. Her eyes were dry and she seemed resigned to the fact that he was leaving. “Do you promise you’ll be here?”

Heath smiled. “I promise I’ll be here. Can I get a hug and kiss before I leave?”

Sam wrapped her arms around Heath and he held her tightly. Finally the time had come and they walked back to his horse.

He bent down and kissed her cheek. “I promise I’ll be here.”

He turned and quickly mounted without looking back. He knew she was crying and he couldn’t handle seeing that.

 * * * * *

Heath jumped up, startled by the rustling of the leaves.

“Calm down. It’s just me.”

Heath relaxed as his brother jumped off his horse. “Nick, what are doing here?”

“I came to take you back. Are you ready?”

“Not yet.” Heath backed away. “I still have too much to figure out here.”

“Come on Heath. There’s nothing here while your whole family is back in Stockton.” Nick was going to tell him about Sam but decided against it. He didn’t want to guilt Heath into returning home.

“Nick, follow me. I want to show you something while it’s still light out.”

Heath walked away and reluctantly Nick followed, confused as to why they were near a pond.

“This is where I told Sam goodbye and I promised her I would be back for her birthday.” Heath looked at the swing.  “Nick, she begged me to take her with me and I swear I had no clue what was going on. And then I didn’t make it for her birthday and she was gone.” He kicked at a rock. “I promised I would be there and I wasn’t. How do I live with this?”

Nick had enough. He roughly grabbed Heath by the shoulders. “Stop living in the past before it kills you. Heath there is a little girl waiting for her brother to come home and that’s all she cares about. Can’t you understand that?” He shook Heath as he spoke ignoring the fact that his brother was near tears. “Heath, you have a second chance with Sam, don’t blow it.”

Nick loosened his grip and Heath slipped away, walking towards the swing. He leaned against the tree with his back to Nick. Sighing deeply Nick neared his brother. Gently he put a hand on his brother’s shoulder.

“Heath, there’s nothing left here for you. Let’s go home.”

Heath turned. “This used to be my home” he choked out.

“Your home is with your family. Heath let this go, please.”

Nick reached for his brother but Heath pulled away.  “Sam will never forgive me.”

Nick had enough. “Sam doesn’t blame you.” He grabbed Heath and pulled him close. “Forgive yourself.”

Heath sobbed as he shook in Nick’s arms. “I…hate this place.” Heath choked out.

“I know.” Nick gently rubbed the back of Heath’s head. “Heath, we’re going to get on our horses and we’re going to leave and not look back. Just forward” he added quietly.

Nick was anxious to head home but Heath was still crying, his body shaking with each sob.

“Let it go” Nick whispered as he continued to rub Heath’s head. When Heath was ready they mounted their horses and headed home.

Part 5

The family waited in the hallway while the doctor was in with Sam. Victoria was also in there but she was the only one allowed.

“How long is this going to take?” Nick asked as he slammed his hand against the wall. Nick winced slightly, and then glanced over at Jarrod who was watching him. Heath was in the corner, angry with Nick and wanting nothing to do with his brothers.

“Nick, take it easy.” Jarrod tried to check his brother’s hand but Nick pulled it away.

“She’s been sick for three days…what is wrong with her?” They had returned from Strawberry to find Sam still running a high fever. Nick walked over to his younger brother.  “Heath, she’s going to be ok.” Nick started to place his hand on Heath’s shoulder, but stopped short of touching his brother.

Nick had not told Heath about Sam until they were near Stockton and his brother reacted with anger that he hadn’t been told earlier. Heath had raced home but Sam had been too feverish and delirious to realize her brother was home.

The door opened and Nick turned to face the doctor. “How is she?”

The doctor smiled slightly. “The fever is lower and she’s awake right now. But she’s still a very sick little girl and right now the most important thing is to get some food in her.”

“Doc, nothing is staying in,” Jarrod commented.

“I know. Your mother told me. Just keep pushing liquids until she can handle something more solid. But until she gets some nourishment…” the doc shrugged. “She’s already too thin….” He was going to say more but stopped himself. “I’ll be back in the morning.”

Jarrod escorted the doctor downstairs. Nick was about to say something when Heath shuffled past him and into the bedroom. Nick followed closely.

“Samantha.” Heath sat down in the chair nearest the bed. He reached out and touched his sister’s cheek. “Hey squirt.”

Nick wondered if that was a nickname for the child. She looked up and smiled weakly.

“I don’t feel good,” she whispered.

“I know.” He ran his hand through Sam’s hair.

“Heath.” Sam lifted her arms out as Heath looked at Victoria.

“Can I?” he mouthed.

When Victoria nodded Heath gently lifted Sam out of the bed and sat back down. Nick grabbed the blanket and completely covered the little girl. Sam fell asleep almost immediately, snuggled in Heath’s arms.

“Nick, let’s go downstairs.” Victoria grabbed her son’s arm and pulled him out the door.

“I don’t want to leave.” Nick was about to go back in but Victoria got in his way.

“Heath needs some time with his sister.”

Nick winced when she said that. “She’s not just Heath’s sister. Am I the only one who knows that?” He rushed past Jarrod and down the stairs. They heard the front door slam shut as Nick left the house.

“What was that about?” Victoria looked to her oldest son.

“Heath is angry and he’s taking it out on Nick.” Jarrod escorted his mother downstairs. “Nick told me this morning that he’s afraid Heath is going to take Samantha and leave.”

Victoria stopped at the bottom of the stairs.  “Heath is not going to do that and we both know it.”

Jarrod nodded. “We do but Nick doesn’t. He asked me to approach Heath about the adoption but the time’s not right. I convinced him to wait until Sam is feeling better and hopefully Heath will be in a better mood.” Jarrod smiled.

“I always knew Nick would fall hard for pretty green eyes, but I never figured they would belong to an eight year old girl.” Victoria managed a weary smile. “Things will work out once Samantha is feeling better. I’m going to rest while she’s resting and Heath is with her.”

Jarrod watched her walk towards the living room and then headed outside to find his brother.

 * * * * *

Heath carefully balanced the packages in his hands as he tried to open the door. He was a week late and he hoped a few extra presents would entice Sam to forgive him.

“Sam, where are you?” Just as Heath entered all the packages fell from his hands.

“Nothing’s breakable” he muttered as he kicked one to the side. “Sam? Ma?” Heath hollered through the house.

“Stop your yelling.” Heath turned to see his mother standing there. One look at her face told him something was wrong.

“Ma, what is it?” He neared her.

“They’re gone.”

“Huh? Who’s gone?” Heath glanced around, still looking for his sister. “Ma, where’s Sam?” The look on her face terrified him. “Ma, where is she?” Heath grabbed his mother’s arm.

“He took her and they’re gone. I don’t know where they are.”

Heath shook his head. “No. He can’t take my sister.” Heath panicked as he ran through the house. It was a joke. They were playing a joke on him because he missed Sam’s birthday. The search proved futile and he ended back where he started. “Ma!” Heath’s voice cracked. “Where’d they go?”

A shrug of the shoulders was all the answer Heath got as he ran out the door. Running through town, he asked anyone he could and no one gave him any answers. Heath spent nearly a month looking everywhere but he ran out of money and food and finally he returned to Strawberry. His mother looked so much older, sitting at the table. Hannah was with her, as Heath knew she would be.

“Ma!” They both looked up when Heath entered. “I looked everywhere I could and I can’t find them. Will we ever see Sam again?”

Neither woman answered and Heath finally walked out and down to the pond he and Sam loved so much. He sat on the swing and cried, harder than he had in his whole life.

 * * * * *

“Heath? Are you ok?”

Heath looked up at his older brother and then realized he had tears running down his face. Careful not to disturb Sam he quickly wiped his face, keeping his eyes lowered.

“Heath, let me put Sam back in bed.” Jarrod tried to take her but Heath wouldn’t let go. “Heath!” Jarrod kept his voice low. “She’s sound to sleep and she’ll be more comfortable in bed.”

Heath relented and Jarrod gently placed the child back in bed. He felt her forehead, pleased that she felt cooler.

“Let’s go. We need to talk.” A bit roughly Jarrod pulled Heath up and pushed him out the door.

“What’s your problem?” Heath waited until they were downstairs.

“You are. But that’s going to change tonight.”

Heath’s eyes narrowed. “I’m not in the mood for a lecture.”

Jarrod wasn’t surprised. “Heath, why were you crying?”

That question surprised Heath but he tried not to show it. “Doesn’t matter.”

Jarrod suddenly grabbed his shoulders. “It does matter. Answer me.”

Heath couldn’t recall seeing Jarrod mad at him. Usually that was Nick’s job. “I was thinking about the day I found out Sam was gone. I thought I would never see my sister again.”

Jarrod nodded, the anger ebbing a bit. “We need to talk about your sister.”

Heath noticed the emphasis Jarrod put on sister. “What about Sam?”

Jarrod ignored the belligerent tone as he tried to figure out the best way to talk to Heath. Sometimes he felt like Nick did; so unsure of their new brother.

“Sam is your sister and she’s here because of you. That we all agree on.” Jarrod walked over and poured two drinks, handing one to Heath. “But she’s not just your sister now.” He could tell Heath was confused and Jarrod paused, rethinking his thought process. “Sam is part of our family now and she’s become very important to all of us. Heath we want to become one family but you have to give a little.” Inwardly Jarrod chastised himself. He was a lawyer and he was supposed to have a way with words, but this was not going the way he envisioned. “Heath, mother wants to adopt Sam and make her a Barkley. Is that ok with you?”

“Uh. Yeah. I guess.” Heath wasn’t sure how he was supposed to react. He quickly downed his drink and poured another one.

“Heath, that means she’s not just your sister. She’s mine and Audra’s and Nick’s…”

“Jarrod, you’re making no sense. I don’t own Sam.”

Jarrod sighed loudly. “Heath, I want you to give Nick a break.”

Heath slammed his glass down. “Whatever is going on here is over. I don’t want to talk about Nick and I don’t want to talk about Sam. I’m going back upstairs to be with my sister.”

“What’s going on?” Nick walked in at that moment and blocked Heath’s path upstairs.

“Ask him. I don’t know what’s going on.” He tried to get around Nick but his brother wouldn’t allow him. “What do you want from me?” Heath threw his arms up and walked away from his brothers.

Nick started to question Jarrod but Jarrod stopped him with a finger and then followed Heath.

“Nick told me what happened in Strawberry.”

Heath glared at Nick who still seemed befuddled.

“He told me you blame yourself for what happened to Sam.”

“Stop it.” Heath covered his ears with his hands but he could still hear his brother.

“You probably blame yourself for her being sick right now. Come on Heath, if you hadn’t left her, she would never be that thin and having such a hard time fighting the fever. Right Heath?” Jarrod leaned over his brother.

“Jarrod, stop it.” Nick tried to get in between them but Jarrod pushed him away.

“Answer me Heath. It’s all your fault. Right?”

“Right.” Heath sank to the floor, hiding his face in his hands.

Nick tried to go to him but Jarrod held him back.

“I should have protected her.” Heath cried out. “She’s my sister and…” Heath’s crying intensified. “It’s my fault.” He looked up and they saw the anguish on his face. “You be her brothers. She’s better off without me.”

Nick broke loose from Jarrod’s grasp and knelt next to Heath. He tried to comfort his younger brother but Heath pushed him away. Jarrod also lowered himself to the floor.

“It’s easier to be alone isn’t it?” Jarrod touched Heath’s arm. “Heath, it’s your fault that you’re here. You came looking for us, we didn’t ask for another brother.” Jarrod knew Nick was glaring at him but he refused to acknowledge him. “We didn’t ask for Sam either, but she’s now here too because of you.”

Heath’s crying lessened but his body was still shaking.

“But you have to realize something else.” Jarrod inched closer and placed an arm around Heath’s shoulders. “We love you and you’re stuck with us now. And we’re not going to let you suffer because of something that wasn’t your fault. Heath let it go. It’s time we move on and forget about the past.”

“I can’t.” Heath choked out between renewed sobs. “It’s all I think about…and I can’t get it out…Help me.”

It was the two words that Jarrod was looking for. “We’ll help you Heath.” He pulled his younger brother into arms and gently rocked him.

Nick shifted uncomfortably next to them.

“Go check on Sam. I’ll stay here with Heath.” Jarrod wasn’t surprised that Nick shot out of the room as fast as he could. Jarrod hadn’t planned on this happening. He had only wanted Heath to be nice to Nick and not so possessive of his sister. But some things weren’t planned and he knew Heath was so down he needed to feel loved and wanted and Jarrod was happy to oblige.  “Heath, it’s going to get better, I promise.” Jarrod whispered as he wrapped his arms a little tighter.

 * * * * *

Heath opened his eyes, and then squinted from the light coming through the window. He sat up suddenly, thinking he had overslept. Heath rubbed his eyes as some of the memories came flooding back. He remembered Jarrod taunting him and then crying. Heath sighed loudly. He was crying in Jarrod’s arms and Nick was there. Heath stood up and wandered over to the mirror, barely able to face himself.

“How am I going to face them?” he wondered out loud. He didn’t remember anything else or how he ended up in bed. Heath stretched, feeling more rested than he had in weeks. Sam! Suddenly he remembered his sister and quickly put his pants on and ran into the hallway. He stopped in the doorway when he saw Nick in the room. Nick glanced up as Heath looked away.

“It’s about time you woke up. Heath, how do you feel?”

“Fine. How is Sam?” Heath noticed a piece of paper on the table and picked it up.

“The doctor was happy with her progress” Nick reported. “Her fever is normal but he’s very worried about how fragile she is.”

That got Heath’s attention and he stared at his brother. “Fragile?”

Nick nodded. “He doesn’t know where the fever came from but he doesn’t think she could fight it off again while she’s this thin. Mother and Hannah went into town with him to figure out a game plan to fatten her up. But we’re going to have to stay on her day and night to eat.”

Heath took that all in and then looked at the paper in his hand. “What’s this?”

Nick realized that none of them had informed Heath about Sam.

“Heath, she can’t read or write and she felt well enough for Audra to give her a lesson.”

Heath frowned. “But the orphanage has a school right?”

Nick nodded. “Seems Samantha wasn’t willing to participate and they didn’t force her, therefore we have one little girl with no schooling and a strong desire to stay that away.” Nick chuckled. “Of course Mother wants her to go to school and what Mother wants…” Nick paused, smiling. “Sam is trying and she knows she’ll go to school when she catches up.”

Heath stretched, yawning at the same time.

“Don’t tell me you’re still tired. You’ve been asleep for nearly a day.”

Heath stared at him. He hadn’t realized he’d been sleeping that long.

“Heath, when’s the last time you’ve slept?”

Heath shrugged. “I guess it’s been awhile,” he mumbled. “Nick, I’m sorry about yesterday.” He shivered, thinking about what happened.

Nick stood up. “Heath, don’t you dare apologize.” He approached his younger brother. “I don’t agree with Jarrod’s method but it’s obvious you needed a big brother yesterday.”

“Two,” Heath quietly stated, and then lowered his head.

He didn’t see the broad smile on Nick’s face. “Ok then.” Nick gently grabbed his brother’s shoulders. “You’re going to listen to this brother. As soon as the ladies get back there’s a fence that needs fixing and I want you to check out this new stallion I purchased.” Nick paused. “Heath, I think you just need to get back to some normalcy and you’ll feel better. Give it a try?”

Heath managed a weary smile. “I don’t know what normal is anymore.” He motioned towards Sam and noticed she was staring up at him.

“I’m hungry.”

“That’s the best news I’ve heard in a while. Heath, don’t you agree?”

He nodded.

“It’s near lunch,” Nick stated. “Let’s take Sam downstairs and see what we can rustle up to eat.” He searched the room and found the little girl’s robe hanging in the closet.

“Nick, is this a good idea?” Heath found her slippers and handed them to his brother.

“Why not?” Nick lifted the child into his arms. “I’ll carry her down and it will do her some good to get out of this room. Right Sam?”

“Right.” Sam wrapped her arms around Nick, a smile on her face.

Heath felt a twinge of jealousy as he followed them out of the room.
