Me and my interests
This part of the site used to contain links to other Young Riders-related Web sites. But we have the wonderful Web ring for that. Now, Waystations is where I chronicle my interests in films, TV shows, books, sports, etc.
"Farscape" is my current obsession. I came in late the game, though. The show was canceled earlier this year at the end of its fourth season.
Joss Whedon, creator of "Buffy: The Vampire Slayer" and "Angel," created a wonderful soap opera with "Firefly." But the Fox network, showing no vision, prematurely canceled the show. The show lives on in various fan sites, My favorite of these Web sites is Fireflyfans.net.
Ahh, baseball. My favorite sport. And the New York Yankees are my favorite team. What a ride it was in the late '90s. These days though, many of the front office moves have left me scratching my head. (I know, it's former Met Robin Ventura pictured above. What can I say, I think he's cute).

beanballs in beantown
pedro martinez is, arguably, the best pitcher in baseball.

but he is also a diva. a notorious headhunter. an athlete with no trace of professionalism in his bone. and, by throwing a man more than twice his age to the ground, he's shown himself to be an absolute ass.

no one can, no one will convince me that martinez wasn't aiming for karim garcia's head in the fourth inning. this guy is well-known for his control. he can put those pitches wherever he wants ... yes, even out of the strike zone and straight toward a batter's head.

then he starts jawing with yankee catcher jorge posada, pointing to his head, implying that's where jorge was going to get his next pitch. the arrogance!!! and then during that melee started by the absolutely ridiculous manny ramirez, martinez threw yankees' bench coach don zimmer into the ground. the man is 72 years old. pedro is 31.

reports say zim was swinging at pedro. how much damage can a 72-year-old man make? why didn't pedro just step aside, avoid don zimmer? look at the tape, he had time. but he just stood there and waited. why did he have to take this old man, this "warbling gerbil" according to one insensitive columnist, by the head and throw him to the ground?!?!?! did he think people were going to regard him as this big, macho man? you don't ever do that to old people. you step aside, you avoid them. but you DON'T THROW THEM TO THE GROUND.

oh, and manny ramirez. what the hell was he complaining about? roger clemens' pitch was nowhere near his head. it was high in the strike zone, but it wasn't nearly as dangerous as the one pedro threw at karim garcia. and yet manny -- overpaid, useless, arrogant manny -- acted like roger was trying to bean him and started walking toward the mound, his bat menacingly clutched in his hand. roger had a reputation for being a headhunter, too. but that was just not the case this afternoon.

now, two yankees might get charged for allegedly beating a member of the sox's grounds crew. i have no idea what that's about. maybe pitcher jeff nelson and outfielder karim garcia deserve to be charged. i don't know. but a sports writer friend pointed out tonight that the sox bullpen is a dangerous place for players because fans can get right up to them and smack them if they wanted to.

what happened in fenway is really ugly. what could have been a classic duel between two of the greatest pitchers in the history of the game turned into a horror show. and though the yankees won this game and took a 2-1 lead in the series, i feel no joy, only disgust.

this is, of course, a very biased account of the events at fenway park. i'm after a loyal constituent of the so-called "evil empire." for the views of members of the sox nation, here is the "joy of sox" web site.

catherine zeta-jones razzle dazzles
got my "chicago" DVD in the mail today and i immediately immersed myself in this seedily delicious world. i saw the musical on broadway with bebe neuwirth and i went home not just humming the songs but trying to copy the slinky moves.

when i heard a movie musical was in the works, i was intrigued but not very excited. the interest quotient increased when i heard catherine zeta-jones was going to play velma kelly. it dropped down a bit when renee zelwegger was cast as roxie hart. hey, i like renee, loved her in "bridget jones' diary." just didn't think she was right as roxie. ... she was OK; miz jones was dazzling and totally deserving of that oscar.

my favorite song? all that jazz, of course. but i also love "cell block tango." is that the name of the song? i'm not quite sure. i love the fury and the energy of that song and the performances were great. yes, even maya.

enjoying familiar faces
thought i'd give myself a break from the yankees -- who lost game 1 of the american league championship series to those hated team in New England -- and see what the new TV season has to offer.

so far, only one show has caught my attention, "miss match" which airs fridays at 9 p.m. on NBC. the show stars alicia silverstone ("clueless," "batman and robin") as a divorce lawyer who moonlight as a matchmaker.

all the newspapers and magazines are raving about miz silverstone. she was even on the cover of my showbiz bible, entertainment weekly. i get it. she's the star. she's OK. she brings a certain charm to the role. i still feel a twinge of irritation when she starts twisting her lips but that's a bit tempered now. the real reason i'm excited to see this show is because david conrad is back on the small screen.

i remember my cousin and i gushing over him back on the mid-'90s when he played the adorable leo in "relativity." he starred with kimberly williams as twentysomethings who meet and fall in love in italy and then return to the u.s. and try to make the romance work. loved that show. so, of course, it was canceled after one season.

just one more game...
and the yankees will be in the league championship series! they beat the minnesota twins 3-1 this afternoon behind roger clemens' explosive pitching performance. it was thrilling! it was exciting! ... at least the parts i saw. i kept running and hiding in my room every time clemens threw a ball -- which was not that often, but the excitment was too much for me ;)

at least hideki matsui and bernie williams came through. jorge posada had a chance to blow the game wide open but he struck out while the bases where loaded with two outs. that's OK, he called a good game, anyway. so, with the yankees 2-1 in the division series i'm doing my happy dance, la la la la la.

big old boomer wells is pitching tomorrow. he has the postseason pedigree. and he pitched his perfect game against minnesota, me thinks. let's see if his back holds up.

all hail couch tomatoes, er potatoes!!!
i was telling friends that i'm boycotting the new fall season because i'm still nursing a huge brokenheart from "firefly's" cancellation last year. but now that the shows have started i'm getting really excited.

there are some old friends i've been wanting to see:

sydney and michael: my favorite spies and lovebirds were both in shock when alias' second season ended. miss bristow returned from her two-year disappearance with an ugly scar on her stomach, and mr. vaughn sported a shiny wedding ring on his finger.

angel and company: my favorite vampire with a soul will be joined by that other vampire with a soul ;-) yep, spike has left sunnydale for hell-ay and will join angel and the gang in their new headquarters.

yankees are back in playoffs
the yankees are the AL east champions ... hooray!!! for a while, i thought they'd win by "backing in." baltimore was leading boston until the ninth ... and then the birds blew it. i'm getting kinda worried -- those red sox seem to playing really, really well. where's the bambino when you need him?

in a theater near you: FIREFLY
the saga of captain mal and his merry men and women will apparently be continued on the big screen. according to the hollywood reporter, universal recently acquired the rights to "firefly" from 20the century fox television. the movie is slated to go into production in the first quarter of 2004. shiny, shiny news!!!

this movie will, of course, be the directorial debut of TV genius joss whedon. i'm both excited and anxious for joss. hope tim minear, former executive producer, also gets on board. i love what those two cook up together.

the only thing that bothered me about the press release was this sentence: "whedon hopes to enlist the entire cast to come back for the feature, depending on their previous commitments." whaaat?!?! i can't imagine "firefly" without mal, zoe, wash, jayne, kaylee, simon, river, inara and book all together. it just won't be the same.ˇˇ
