Chapter 1

It was a warm spring day, Andrea was walking to the only restaurant in Sweetwater where she was a waitress. Not watching were she was headed when she ran into one of the Pony Express Riders. She fell to the ground. 

He knelt down and helped her up. As he was helping her to her feet he said, "Mam are you okay?" 

With a firm grasp on his hands she said, "Yes Sir I am. I should watch where I am going. Thank you for helping me up." 

Just smiling he said, "My name is Buck, what’s your name?" 

She looked down and said, "My name is Andrea. Well I better get to work. Thank you for the help up. I hope I see you around sometime." He said, "I hope to run 
into you again." Then he kissed her hand and she turned and walked away. 

Inside the restaurant Andrea asked one of the other girls if she knew who that 
man was. She said, "That’s the half breed that rides for the pony express."  
Looking down at the floor she said," Why do you ask? " 

She looked at her and said," I was involved with one of the riders before he 
became a rider. I have two children by him and I am afraid to tell him about them." 

She looked at her and said," who is the father of you babies?" 

Looking around she said," Its James Hickok." 

The other girl looked at her in shock. Then she said, "He's here at this station. He works with the young man you were just talking to." 

Andrea just stood there for a few minutes. Then said," Well I guess I better go out there and tell him that he has two children. But I think I have fallen for the guy I just met. Man what do I do?" 

The other girl said," Well he needs to know, I think it would be better if you tell 
him when he's by himself. Then if the other guy comes and asked to start courting you, then you need to tell him. If you would like I could run a note out to Wild Bill has he is called." 

She thought about it a minute and then said," that would be great. I hope Buck, 
the other guy does come and call on me. ." 

So Andrea sat down and wrote a small note, It said, "James I don't know if you remember me but we had a brief encounter about 3 years ago in Kansas. You helped me out just after me mother passed away. I need to talk to you. Please meet me in the churchyard after services Sunday. Andrea." Then she folded the note and handed it to my friend and she asked me to cover for her and she did. 

About an hour later she came back in with a note for me. Andrea took it from her and opened it. It said," I will met you but I don't remember who you are. Jimmy." She looked at her friend and said," This is in a women’s handwriting." 

She said," yes it is the lady at the station wrote it for him. She told me the Jimmy can't read or write." 

The rest of the day went by fast and when Andrea got home that night, Buck was waiting for her on the porch for her. He smiled at her and said," Hi there Miss Andrea, I was hoping I would get a chance to get to know you." 

She smiled at him and said," Can you wait just a minute?” ( He shook he's head yes.). Then she opened the front door and her twins came running out saying," momma your home." She knelt down and said," yes where is you sitter?" they 
both pointed inside. So leaning in the door she said," Kathy you can go home now I'll see you tomorrow." then she turned to Buck and said, " There are two people I want you to meet. Before you ask No I am not married or a widow. But these are my children, James and Louise." 

He looked up at her then to the two small children at her legs. Then he smiled a
nd said, " There is a rider at the station that is named James." Biting her lower lip, Not willing to start off on the wrong foot. 

She said, "They are twins and he is named after his father. Their father was there to help me out emotionally after my mother died three years ago. I haven't told him yet. So please don't ask me who he is till I have a chance to tell him." 

Smiling back at her he said, "Okay, Its up to you to say when you are ready. I 
won’t pry. But I would like to know who he is after you have told him." She nodded yes. 

Then he knelt down to them and said," Well its nice to met the two of you. Do you mind if I call on your mother?" 

They looked at their mother and then at him and said," That’s okay. You look like you’re a nice person." Then they turned around and went into the house and shut the door. 

After the twins ran inside. Andrea said, "Would you like something to drink? I have some lemonade in the house." 

Turning to look at her he said, "That would be great." So she went in and got two glasses of lemonade and brought them out and handed on to him. Then she said, "Why don't we sit on the swing. It is to nice to be inside this evening." 

Smiling at her he said, " That would be great." As they sat down he continued, "Why are you out here all by yourself? Where’s your father? I think I should ask 
him if its okay if I come around and see you." 

Trying to hide a smile she said, "My father is in Kansas somewhere. I moved here after my babies where born to start a new life and maybe find a husband that would understand me and why I did what I did three years ago. And not judge me or the father of my children. There is someone you should speak to but you all ready did. I never see a guy that my children don't like and they gave you the okay." 

The silence strechted out for a few minutes then he said," Well then I guess I should ask you also if its okay to come call on you. As far as whatever happened between you and their father it was before I ran into you today. I understand we 
all do things in time of grief." 

Feeling a bit silly Andrea said," When my mother died, my father disappeared into a bottle and I was left to deal with everything alone. So I thought that if my father can disappear into a bottle and feel better then maybe I can too. I was only 16 
and not very wise in the way of the world. So one night I got drunk and ran into a very sweet young man. I seduced him and one thing lead to another and nine months later I gave birth to twins, His twins. I lost track of him ‘til just a few days ago. There were never any romantic feelings between us." 

Buck sat there and listen to her story and then he said, "Liqueur can do that to people but I am glad to see that you didn't make a habit of it. And judging by 
those two beautiful children their father should very proud of them. I only have 
one question. Why have you waited to now to tell him about them?" 

Looking away Andrea said, "To tell you the truth I was afraid that he would want 
to marry me and at that time I wasn't ready to get married. I do want him to be part of his children's life, but I would rather marry a man that loves me and understands that I made a bad mistake one time and I am doing the best that I 
can for myself and my kids." 

Smiling at her Buck said," I think you are a very brave young women for trying to support to children on your own without a man. Have you ask the young man to meet with you?" 

Looking down at her glass Andrea said, Yes I and to meet him in the church yard tomorrow after services. “I am nervous about it." 

Smiling at her Buck said. "I think any man who would be mad at you is a fool." 

As they watched the sun set. Standing up Buck said, "Its getting late I think I better head back to the station before Teaspoon has my hide on the wall for breaking curfew. I have enjoyed tonight. I hope we can do it again something. I would like to call on you tomorrow if that’s okay." Reaching his hand out to her. 

She took it and stood up. Then she said," Why don't you come over for dinner tomorrow. I get off early. How about 7:00. I should have spoken to their father by then I am more then willing to tell you who he is. If you promise not to judge 
either of us." 

Smiling he said," Sure thing I try never to judge people by what they did. When they know it’s a mistake." 

Smiling back at him she said, "Thank you. You are very sweet. I bet your girl is a very special young lady." 

Blushing Buck said," I don't have a girl right now, but I hope that maybe someday 
I will have one. Thank you for the lemonade. Then I shall see you tomorrow at 
7:00 for supper." With that he kissed her hand and left her standing on the porch. 

Turning and going inside Andrea put the children to bed and sat down that think over everything that happened today. Deciding that it was getting late Andrea decided to go to bed and let tomorrow bring what it may. She knew she couldn't change what had happened between her and Jimmy three years ago, much less change how she was feeling about this young man she spent the evening on the porch with. It seemed like it took forever to get to sleep. Andrea was awaken by the twins jumping onto her bed with her. Looking at them she smiled and knew 
she was doing the right thing by telling Jimmy about them. All of them deserve a chance to get to knew each other. 

She rose and started breakfast. After everyone was finished eating. As Andrea 
was leaving the sitter Kathy was entering the house. Andrea said," I should be home early today. I am having someone over for supper so can you please make sure the children are clean and the house is picked up. Thank you." She headed 
out the door. As she walked over to the restaurant she saw Jimmy in town at the general store. As she stood there watching him. She saw Buck walk out of the store. He looked up and smiled. Jimmy looked over and when he saw her he knew who she was. Andrea turned away quickly and headed into the restaurant. The 
day seem to drag on but the time finely came when she was to meet Jimmy. Andrea walked home. As she reached the porch, she was surprise to fine Jimmy sitting on the swing. 

He stood up and said," What do you want with me. I thought that I would never 
see you again. I wish my past would stop catching up with me." 

Looking hurt She said," I didn't move her to find you. But when I found out you were here I thought you should know. Believe me Jimmy I never wanted to hurt you. I don't know what came over me that night. But what I did was wrong and 
now there is two other people to conceder here. Please come inside and I will tell you why I sent you that note." 

He followed Andrea into her house reluctantly. AS they walked in they were greeted by her children. Looking shocked he said," Well who are these two little ones. 

She looked at him and said," Jimmy Hickok I would like you to meet your children. James and Louise meet your father." 

Looking up at her he looked as if he had just been slapped. Kneeling down he looked at the kids. Then turning to Louise he said, Well I see that you look like 
your mother. You are just as pretty as I thought she was when I fist saw her. And you I bet you are a hand full.( looking at James). Standing up he turned to Andrea and said," How do you know that they are mine. I mean we are only together that one night. 

Andrea said," Come into the living room and I'll explain. " They went into the living room and sat down. Then she continued," I know they are your because exactly nine months after our fling I gave birth to them. They other way I know is when I saw James I knew. He looks just like you. I don't want anything form you. I just thought that you should know about them. I never told them who their father is because I was ashamed of what we did. But I do have to say that they are the 
best thing that could have ever happened to me after the death of my mother. I want to thank you. Those two mean the world to me. I would do anything for them." 

Sitting there looking at the two little one playing on the floor. He said," I wish I would have known. I would have married you. I will still marry you if you want 
me? I am sorry about the way a sounded earlier. I never meant to hurt you either." 

Smiling as she watched him get on the floor with the children and start playing 
with them. She said, "Jimmy. (looking up at her) Please take off your guns I don't want any of you get hurt. (nodding yes he pulled his guns out of the holster and handed them to her.) I don't want you to marry me if you feel you should. I have done pretty go by myself for three years now. Besides I have started seeing a young man who seems to understand why we did what we did and isn't going to judge us for it. I think you know him. His name is Buck. I ran into him yesterday. I have invited him over for supper tonight, I would also like it if you stayed too. " Looking up from the floor at her he said, 

"So that’s why he came sneaking back in last night. He is a good guy and as long 
as he wont be upset that I am here." 

Shaking her head no she said," Its okay you should stay and get to know your children." With that she got up and left the room to per pare supper. 

 
Chapter 2

Placing Jimmy's gun on the mantel has she walked by it. As she was in the kitchen she heard a knock at the door. She walked over to the door of the kitchen and yelled," Jimmy can you please get the door. Dinner will be ready in about 30 minutes." 

Standing up Jimmy said, "Sure thing. " He walked over to the door and opened it. 

Noticing that it was it was Buck at the door. He said," Hi there Buck. Come on in, Andrea said Dinner will be ready in about 30 minutes." 

Looking surprise Buck said," So you are the father of those two sweet little ones." 

Just then the twins came running in saying," Poppa come play with us." Jimmy kneeling down as he took them in his arms and said, "Okay I'll be there in a few minutes. Go see if your mother needs any help." Smiling at him they ran off towards the kitchen. 

Standing up Jimmy let Buck in and said," Andrea said she would explain 
everything at dinner. I just want you to know that I had no idea about them till today. I offered to marry her but she turned me down. She said she wasn't ready for marriage yet. But I think she has fallen for you. I will stay out of the way. I just want to be part of their lives." 

Buck said," I understand that. I hope she will allow me to continue to see her. 
They walked into the kitchen. Sarah looked up. Smiling she said," Hi there Buck. I am sorry I didn't tell you that Jimmy was their father. I thought it was important that he know first." 

Walking over to her placing his hands on her shoulders he turned her to face him and said, " I understand. I think it is important that they get to know him. He may be hard headed and quick tempered but he has been a good friend to me, and I would trust him with my life." Turning and smiling back at Jimmy. 

Just then Jimmy walked over to them and said, "I think that is a complement. Thank you, I trust you with my life too man." Looking at Andrea he continues. "He is a good guy and I hope that you and him will be good to each other. They only thing that I really ask is that you take good care of my children for me." 

Andrea gave Jimmy a hug and said, " Even though. I did you wrong I do hope you forgive me for not telling you about them sooner. I do want to thank you for giving them to me. They are the best things that have happened to me so far." Giving Jimmy a hug. Pulling back she said, " Okay dinner is ready. Jimmy would you go 
get the children cleaned up and to the table? Would you help me get it on the 
table Buck?" 

Jimmy smiled and said," You bet." As he ran off to find the children. 

Buck turned to Andrea and said, "I would love to help you get dinner on the table, but first there is something I want to do." He reach out a pulled her close. Then leaning into her he whispered, "I have wanted to do this since I bumped into you yesterday." then he kissed her. Pulling back he said, " I hope that I didn't offend you by doing that. I just couldn't resist. I have done nothing but think about you." 

Smiling and blushing Andrea said, " I am glad that you did that. I have done nothing but think about you too. I hope we can make this work out." Handing him the plates and the forks. She garbed the pot and they walked into the dinning room. 

The children were already there, and Jimmy was just sitting down himself. When 
he saw Andrea and Buck come in, he stood and went to help Andrea sit down but before he could pull out the chair. 

Buck said, " I don't think so. I will pull the chair out for my girl. But you can take 
the plates and stuff." He smiled at Jimmy and handed him the plates. Pulling out her chair she sat down. then taking the seat next to her. 

Once they all were seated Andrea said, "If you will hand me the plates I will dish 
up the food." Jimmy shook his head and said," I'll do that. Its time I grow up 
some. You just sit there and look pretty. I hope Louise turns out to be just as pretty as you are." 

Blushing as she took the plate from him. After everyone had their plate Andrea said, " I don't know about you to but here we say grace." Turning to Buck she said, " I know you may believe differently the we do please don't offended." 

Placing his hand on hers he said, " I do believe differently but I will be okay. we pray at the station before every meal. I learned about it when I was in the 
mission school. I go along with it. So don't worry about me." 

The prayed and then started eating. Little Jimmy looked at his father and said, "Poppa how do you and Mr. Cross know each other and how did you met 
mommy?" 

Looking at Andrea and then at his son. He said, " Well Mr. Cross and I work together. We work for the Pony Express. As far as how I met your mother I don't know if that's a story you should hear yet." Looking at Andrea. 

Putting down her fork Andrea said, " I met your father just after your grandmother passed away. He was there when I needed a shoulder to cry on. We made one stupid mistake and here you two are. But neither of you are a mistake. I know I love you very much. I wouldn't change anything that happened for the world." 

Smiling Jimmy said, " I wouldn't change anything except for the fact that I didn't know about you two till today. But when I first saw your mother I thought she was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. I still think she is. but I would have to fight my friend to have even a chance with her. But that's okay. I see Louise is just as pretty and going to break hearts too. And you James you are gong to be a hand full. I can see it now." 

Just then Andrea said, " Going to be. He is a hand full. Just like his father. And has 
a quick temper too." 

As they finished dinner. Jimmy said, "Hey kids how about we clean up and allow your mother and Mr. Cross to go sit on the porch swing?" 

The children smiled and nodded yes. They got up from the table and cleaned off 
all the dishes. 

Buck rose and pulled out Andrea chair and the offered her his arm and they 
headed for the porch. 

As Andrea and Buck were sitting on the swing enjoying the cool evening breeze. Buck said, " So do I have to worry about Jimmy?" 

As he places his arm around her shoulders. Looking at him she said, " No you don't have to worry about him. He did ask me to marry him but I told him I wasn't ready for that. Besides I know his reputation and I don't want him to have to worry that something will happen to me or the children. Besides I don't want to have to look over my shoulder all my life. He's sweet and all but he's not for me. I want a gentle, kind and loving man in my life. All though he is always going to be in my 
life because of the children we share." 

Pulling her close he said, " That's good. because I will fight anyone who tries to take you from me. I hope that you will let me be there for you and the children?" 

Just then little Jimmy came running out with Jimmy hot on his heels. As her son reached them he said, " Mommy help me poppa is after me." As Jimmy came 
round to were they could see him. She saw that the front of his clothes were all wet. 

Trying to stifle a laugh she said, "Jimmy what happen?" 

Looking at her he said, "That son of your decided to splash me when we were 
done with the dishes." 

Smiling she said, " Now don't be mad he is only 3. and he was only playing. He 
does it to me all the time. He loves you and that's how he shows it. Now why don't you see if you can get them into bed for the night." 

As a smile crepted across his face he said, " Sure I will try. Come on son I'm not mad at you. Lets get your sister and get you two into bed." And with that he 
picked up little Jimmy and went looking of his daughter. After about ten minutes they heard laughter coming form inside. 

Looking at each other Andrea said, " Well we better go see what that is all about. 
I think he is as bad as they are about getting into bed." 

Nodding his head yes Buck said, " I know so. Lets go see. then Jimmy and I should be leaving. I want to invite you out to the station tomorrow. I think the children 
will enjoy see it and meeting the other riders." 

Taking his hand and standing up she said, " That would be great what time should we be there?" Pulling her close he said, " I well come for you and the children 
about noon." 

They went in and followed the laughter and found Jimmy and the children 
wrestling on the bed. Andrea said, " Well I see were my son gets his behavior from." Looking up they laughed and got up. 

As Jimmy was tucking them in he said, " I love you both. Please be good for your mother. I will know if you are being bad." then he kissed them and left the room. 

Andrea went and kissed them goodnight and returned to Bucks side. Then she 
said, " sleep good tomorrow Buck is taking us to the station where he and your father works." the children smiled and they turned and left the room. they walked out onto the porch where the horses were tied. 

Jimmy came over giving her a hug and said, "They are beautiful. Thank you. You are doing a good job raising them." then he went and mounted up. 

Buck pulled her into his arms and said, "I am going to miss you tonight. I don't know how I manage before we met. stay safe. Do you know how to use a gun?" 

Nodding yes she said, " Yes I do I have one hidden in the house . I well be fine tonight. I can't wait till tomorrow either." with that they kissed goodbye and Buck mounted up and the rode off with a wave. Andrea finely felt the her life was going to change for the better. 

She went inside and was blowing out all the candles for the night. As she reached the stairs she heard a noise. 
 

Chapter 3

Going into the hall and grabbing the gun out of the table by the door. Andrea whispered a silent pray, " Buck I wish you were here." As she headed into the kitchen to check the back door. Then she heard the noise again. This time it came from upstairs. Thinking oh God the children are up there asleep. quietly climbing the back steps. As she reached the top of the stairs. hearing the noise again. it came form the direction of her room. Quickly going into the children’s room. Closing the door she hoped that whoever it was would leave and not find them. 

The boys were about to the edge of town when Buck said, " Something’s wrong at Andreas house. Her and the children are in danger." With the they both turned 
their horses around and galloped towards Andreas house. 

Jimmy looked at Buck and said, " You go around back. I'll go through the front. I swear that if anyone hurt her or those kids it will be the last time they every hurt anyone again." 

Laying a gentle hand and Jimmy’s shoulder and said, " Now calm down. Getting riled up isn't going to help any of them. Now remember that they could get hurt if you don't think before you act. Please Jimmy think this time. For the kids sake." 

Nodding yes Jimmy silently slipped in the front door. AS Buck mad his way around the back. Looking up he saw Andrea with her back against the window. Climbing the trellis he rapped on the window to get her attention. turning around very slow she saw that it was Buck. So she laid the gun down on the floor very quietly. 
Lifting the window open He climbed in. After closing the window she hugged him and said, " I was hoping you would come back. I heard a noise and it came from 
up here. Lucky it came from my room and not here. Is Jimmy with you?" 

Buck said, " Yes he is. He is coming from the front. Lets get the kids out of bed and behind it on the floor." Feeling her tremble he said, " Its okay we are here now. 
You and the children are safe." Walking over to the bed he picked up Louise and Andrea picked up Jimmy and laid them on the floor. Then reaching for her gun on the floor. He said, " Now its real important that you stay on the floor and keep 
them down and quite, no matter what you hear. " 

Kneeling next to Buck Andrea looked at him and said, " Please be careful. And 
keep that hot head in control." 

Touching her face with his hand Buck said, " Don't worry we both will be fine. I 
plan on being here for a long time. And I know that Jimmy wants to see those two grow up." Leaning over to her he gave her a kiss then just before he left he said, " keep it dark in here. One of us will come for you when its over." With that he 
walked out and shut the door. 

Disappearing into the shadows as he creep down the hall. Seeing someone back out of the room. sliding close to the wall Buck watched the person turn into the moon light. Realizing that its not Jimmy, Buck snuck up behind him and quietly slit his throat. Silently sliding the limp body to the floor. Buck silently went into the room and saw Jimmy laying on the floor with blood spilling out of his shoulder. Staying as close to the wall as he can. He saw the other guy over by the dresser going through Andreas things. Feeling the anger grow with in him. At seeing his friend on the floor bleeding and knowing that Andrea and the kids are in danger. Standing and with one lunge he flung himself at the intruder and diving his knife between his shoulder blades. The guy spun around fling Buck over onto the bed. Trying to reach the knife in his back. Quickly gathering his wits Buck quickly drew his gun and fired three times. 

While crouching on the floor over her children hearing the gun fire she feared that Buck or Jimmy might be hurt. Just then Buck opened the door of the room He said, " Its okay. Both the intruders are dead. I need your help Jimmy’s hurt. 

Trying to stand on shaky legs Andrea got to her feet and ran to Buck saying, " Are you okay?" 

Wrapping her in his arms Buck said, " Yes I'm fine. but I need you to go get the doctor. I think Jimmy’s been shot in the shoulder. Where can I put him. I need to get him off the floor." 

Taking his hand Andrea said, " Here follow me I have a spare room." 

Following her they went to her room and Buck slowly picked up Jimmy and carried him to the next room. After laying him on the bed he took Andreas hands and said, " Now please take my gun and run and get the doctor. I will try to stop the bleeding. And Be careful." 

Shaking her head yes and taking his gun she ran down the stairs, out the door and up the street. Banging on the door the doctor finely opened it and said, " What’s the problem Miss." 

Trying to calm down enough to talk she said, " I need you to come to the house. There is an injured man in my house. Its one of the Express riders. I need 
someone to get the marshal and the station manager form the express station please come." 

Seeing the panicked look on her face he said, " Okay. I'll be right back. Let me get some clothes on and get my bag." It seemed like it took for hours but it was only 
a few minutes. As the doctor came out the door he said, " Run across the street and wake the marshal and have him send someone out to the express station. Then hurry back I might need your help." 

Nodding yes Andrea run across the street and started to bang on the marshals door when it opened. 

Standing rubbing the sleep from his eye Sam Cain said, " Why Miss. Johnson. What’s the problem." 

Trying to catch her breath she said, "There were a couple of intruders in my 
house. Lucky for me two of the express riders were near by and killed them both before they could hurt me or my children. But One of them took a bullet in the shoulder. I need you to get the station manager for me." 

Turning to leave Sam Grabbed her arm and said, " I know Buck and Jimmy were at your place tonight but what I don't understand is which one is hurt. " 

Thinking for a minute Andrea said, " Its Jimmy. I don't know how bad either. Please. I need to get back. The doctor said that he might need my help." 

Nodding yes Sam said, " Okay I well. I will meet you at your place leave the 
bodies were they lay." Nodding her yes. Andrea turned and run off towards her place. 

As she reached her front door, she could hear the children start crying. Pushing thorough the door and running up the stairs. As Andrea reached the children's room she saw Buck sitting there trying to calm them down. Breathing hard she walked into the room and took Jimmy from him and sat down next to him. Once Jimmy was quite then Louise settled down too. 

After they got them back into bed. Andrea started to cry. Reaching out Buck wrapped her in his arms, Saying, " If Jimmy can travel I want you and the children to stay at the station with us. I don't know if know if there are more of them or 
not. I am sure Jimmy would agree. The main thing is that you and the children 
are safe." 

Just then Sam and Teaspoon walked into the room. Looking up still holding Andrea Buck said, " Hi Sam. Hi Teaspoon. I know we are late getting back but there was trouble here. Jimmy’s been hurt. The Doctor is with him now. Oh this is Andrea. Andrea this is Teaspoon Hunter. And I am sure you know Sam Cain the marshal." 

Raising her head whipping the tears away she said, " Hi Marshall Thanks for coming. Hi Mr. Hunter. I am sorry to keep the boys out so late but if it wasn't for them me and my kids might not be here." 

Sitting Down next to her Teaspoon said," That’s Okay I knew they were here. Buck told me about you. I thought that Jimmy would be near by. The main thing is that you and the children are okay. I think you and your children should come and stay at the station. You will be safer ‘til we find out what this is all about." 

Trying to smile Andrea said, " Thank you Mr. Hunter. Buck said the same thing." 

Smiling Teaspoon said, " I thought that might be what he would say. He is a very kind boy and I think he is sweet on you." Blushing Andrea just leaned on Buck trying to calm herself down. 

Just then the Doctor came in and said, " Miss. Do you know the young man I just patched up. He will be okay but he needs to stay in bed for a few days. His right arm might be stiff but if he keeps it still it should completely healed in a week or 
so. He is sleeping right now. Which is what he need is to sleep. He looks like he is 
a handful. I will be back in a few days to check on how he is doing." then he left. 
Sam saw him to the door. 

Teaspoon looked at Buck and said, " Why don't you stay here to help keep Jimmy 
in that bed. You know how he can be. I from what I can see Andrea has her hands full with these two." Pointing to the two small children in the bed. 

Buck looked at Andrea and asked, " Is that okay with you?" Nodding her head yes. Then he said, " Okay. Teaspoon can you stay with her while I go get some stuff from the station and tell Emma what happen. Are you going to be okay while I am not here. It will take about 30 minutes to get what Jimmy and I need and head back out here." 

Nodding yes. the Teaspoon said, "Go on son. I will stay close by till you return." 

As Buck stood to leave Sam came in and said," Miss. Johnson I need to know if 
you know these to men. I am sorry to have to ask you this but I need to know. 
Its mainly for Bucks sake. If you know them I have to arrest him for murder." 

Standing up Andrea said, " No I never saw them before. I wont let you arrest Buck he saved mine and my children's lives." Moving in front of Buck and not letting 
him move. 

When he touched her he said, " Andrea its okay Sam is only doing his job. Why don't you get some sleep while I am gone." 

Turning looking up into his eyes she said, " I can't go back into my room. Knowing they were in there." 

Almost collapsing Buck picked her up and laid up on the bed. And said, " Then stay in here." Teaspoon left the room when Buck picked Andrea up and placed her on the bed. After saying that he placed a kiss on her for head. And went to get his 
and Jimmy stuff. 

Teaspoon met Sam down stairs. then Sam said, " Teaspoon I am worried about 
her and the children all alone here. The Two men Buck killed are members of a really nasty gang. They kill anyone who sees them when the break into a place." 

Teaspoon said, " I know its not safe for them here. But there is nothing we can do till Jimmy is able to move. Buck will be back in 30 minutes. He just went after 
some clothes for him and Jimmy and to tell Emma that they will be staying here 
for a few days. But I might have Lou come stay here to. With Jimmy not able to 
use his right arm I would feel better if there was another gun here if it needed. I think I will talk to Andrea and Buck when he gets back." Sam nodded and went to get the undertaker. 

Teaspoon sat down and picked up the book that was on the table by the chair. 

Upstairs Andrea pulled her children close and fell into a restless sleep. Andrea jumped when she felt a gentle touch on her shoulder. Looking up she saw that 
Buck was back and he was sitting on the edge of the bed. Rolling onto her back 
she smiled at him. he touched her face and said, " I put mine and Jimmy’s stuff 
into the room he is in. He was still asleep but at least he didn't look like he was in any pain. Are you hungry?" 

Pushing herself up into a sitting position Andrea said, " That’s good. I could go for something to eat. I'll fix us something to eat." swinging her legs off the bed and walked to the door with Buck close behind her. Stopping at the door she turned around to look at her children. 

Buck seeing her hesitation at leaving them wrapped her in his arms and said, " They will be okay Teaspoon and I are still here. Nothing is going to happen to them." 

Leaning against him Andrea said, " I know that. Its just that if anything happen to them I don't know what I would do. They have been my whole life." 

Turning her he said, " I know. We will leave the door open. We will just be down stairs. Come on lets get something to eat." 

They headed down the hall and down the stairs. As they reached the bottom of 
the stairs Teaspoon met them and said, " I need to talk to you two. I want an 
extra gun here ‘til Jimmy is well enough to travel. I thought that I might see if Lou can come stay here with you. I know what you are thinking Buck but if Andrea and the kids come to the station to stay awhile then she will find out sooner or later. Beside Jimmy isn't going to be able to do anything for awhile till his right arm is healed." 

Looking very confused Andrea said, " That’s good. If Jimmy is anything like his son then I am going to need all the help I can get. But I what I don't understand is. What am I bound it figure out sooner or later." 

As they walked into the kitchen. Teaspoon said, " What’s is this about Jimmy's son?" 

As Andrea went about finding something to eat. Buck said, " About three years 
ago Andrea and Jimmy did a foolish thing and they had those two beautiful kids upstairs only Jimmy didn't know about them till today. He was here getting to 
know them." Turning to Andrea who was putting left over chicken on the table and said, " Well Andrea Lou is a girl posing as a boy to work for the express. Please don't tell anyone or she will lose her job." 

Thinking for a minute she said, “ Sure I wont tell anyone. She has the right to try and support herself any way she can. her secret is safe with me. Now come on 
lets eat." 

They sat there eating for a few minutes when the hears someone yell from up stairs, " What is going on here? Why am I in bed and what happened to me?" 

As all three of them ran up the stairs. Andrea was the first to reach Jimmy. As she sat down on the edge of the bed she said, " When you and Buck came back to help me. You were hurt somehow. The Doctor took out the bullet but said you were to stay in bed for a few days. Your arm will be stiff but in about a week or so you should be back to normal. Now please be still or you will tare your wound open again. 

Looking up he saw Teaspoon and Buck walk into the room. Then turning back to Andrea he said, " the kids are they okay?" 

Smiling she said, " Yes they are okay and asleep in their room. thanks to you and Buck we are all okay." 

Leaning his head back against the head board he looked to Teaspoon and said, " I'm sorry. I know we should have been back by now but I don't really understand 
it but Buck knew something was wrong here. I couldn't just let someone hurt 
those kids and their mother." 

Sitting down on the other side of the bed Teaspoon and said, " That’s okay. I know that you did what you thought you needed to do. I told you that acting before you think will catch up with you. But at least I know you have good taste in young ladies." 

Smiling at Andrea. She blushed and whispered, " Thank you Mr. Hunter." 

Just then Buck walked up and said, " Hey man how do you feel? I know that this may sound funny but it was as if I could hear someone ask for help." 

Turning around Andrea said, " Well I did whisper that I wish you were here when I heard the noise come from up here. I guess you heard me." 

Looking down at her Buck said, " Well I guess I did. All I know is that I felt like I better get here or something terrible will happen." 

Teaspoon said, " Well something terrible could have happened. Sam said that those two guys are part of a nasty gang that robs people while they sleep and if they are seen they kill them. I am going to get Lou to stay here too. Till you are able to leave. then I want Andrea and the children to come stay at the station till we find the rest of the gang." 

Looking at Teaspoon Andrea said, " Does that meant that they other members will come back looking for me. Thinking I killed their friends?" 

Looking at both the boys then he said, " Yes it does. But if I know these two and the others they will do everything they can to protect you and your children." 

Not knowing what to do Andrea just hung her head and started to cry. then said, " What am I going to do? I have now where to go. this is my home." 

Jimmy reached out a hand to her and Buck placed one on her shoulder. then 
Jimmy said, " I know how you feel. But as soon I am out of this bed. You and the children are going to stay at the station. There is always someone there. I know that I will kill anyone who tries to hurt you or my children even if we are not together. And I think Buck feels that same way." 

Leaning down Buck said, "That’s right. No one hurts my girl and her family and 
lives to tell about it." 

Teaspoon said, " Expect Lou with in the hour. Now Jimmy please don't give Andrea any trouble. I will be back at the end of the week to see if you need any help getting things together to stay at the station." Then he turned and left the room. 

Buck who was sitting behind Andrea said, " I am going to see Teaspoon out. Are you going to be okay here?" 

Nodding yes. then Jimmy said, " She'll be fine. I promise I will be on my best behavior." 

Smiling at her Buck got up and left the room. Turning back to Jimmy Andrea said, " Are you sure your not mad at me for not telling you sooner about them?" 

Reaching up Jimmy cupped her face and said, " No I'm not mad. You had no idea where I was. At least I know now that’s all that matters. " 

Just then Buck came back into the room. Andrea removed Jimmy’s hand and said, 
"I think you need some sleep." 

Getting up to leave Jimmy grabbed her hand and said, " I know you will be okay with Buck, But please if you need help call on me for help." 

Smiling she said, " I will remember that, thank you. Now get some sleep." 

As her and Buck left the room. Buck looked at her and said, " I think you need 
some sleep too." 

Nodding her head she said, " I know but I can't seem to sleep right now. Why 
don't we go down stairs. Then we can site in front of the fire awhile. Maybe I might be able to get some sleep after I settle my nerves some." 

They went down stairs and buck started a fire. Settling onto the couch. It wasn't long before Andrea fell asleep wrapped in Bucks arms, with her head on his shoulder. Buck must have fallen asleep because then next thing he knew. The twins were pulling on him to wake him and their mother to wake up. 
 

Chapter 4

Sitting up Buck looked at the children pulling on his arm and said, "Shush what is 
it? You don't want to wake your mother do you?" 

Shaking their heads no, Little Jimmy said, "Mr. Cross. why is poppa up stairs asleep? Why are you here holding momma in your arms?" 

Looking at Andrea then back to the children he said, "Your poppa was hurt last night. We came back because someone broke into your house and your mother needed our help. Your mother couldn't sleep. So I sat here with her. Then she fell asleep on my shoulder so I put my arm around her to keep her from falling. Is that okay with you? I Like your mother a lot, but I don't want to step on your toes. You are the man of the house." 

Little Jimmy looked at the man sitting with his mother and then at his mother. 
Then he said, "Its okay with me. I trust you not to hurt momma. I think she likes you too. Can you fix us something to eat?" 

Smiling Buck said, " Sure I can get you something to eat. But first can you get me 
a blanket to cover your mother with." 

Nodding yes, Little Jimmy ran up stairs and garbed a blanket off his bed and came back down to the living room. When he returned he saw that Buck had stood up 
and laid Andrea down on the couch. Jimmy handed Buck the blanket and watched as he covered his mother with it and gave her a soft gentle kiss on the forehead. 

Turning to the children Buck said, " Come on let go into the kitchen and see what we can find. I am not much of a cook but I will do what I can to get you something to eat." 

As Buck was trying to fry some eggs he heard someone say, " I didn't know you were up. You are forever playing the protector." 

Turning towards the door he saw Lou standing there. After putting the eggs on two plates he turned to Lou and said, "When did you get here? I didn't here you come 
in last night." 

Smiling as she walked over to him and took the pan from him and began frying more eggs for everyone else. She said, " When I got here you were asleep with Andrea in your arms. I just didn't have the heart to wake you. Don't worry I slept on the floor of the spare room. And yes before you ask Jimmy was awake when I got here. But he said not to wake you two. So I lied down and went to sleep 
myself. Now who are these two beautiful children?" 

Sitting down to eat the eggs Lou had fixed for him Buck said, " This James and Louise. And believe it or not Our hotheaded Jimmy is their father. (turning to the twins Buck continued) Jimmy and Lousie this is Lou your father and I work with him." 

Both the children said, " Hello Lou. Thanks for coming to stay here for a while. Mr. Cross says momma was upset last night after someone broke in here and hurt poppa" 

Before Lou could answer Buck said, " Please call me Buck." 

Then Lou said, " Well I know your poppa and Buck here pretty good and if they say there was trouble I believe them. I know if your momma is as pretty as you are Louise then I know why Buck and your father have fallen for her." 

Andrea woke and heard voices in the kitchen. Getting up she walked to the kitchen and stood in the doorway listening to what was being said. 

Looking up Buck noticed her. Standing up he said, " Well good morning sleepy head. Andrea this is Lou. Lou this Andrea." Leaning close to Andrea he whispered 
in her ear., " the children think Lou is a boy. Don't say anything to them about her being a girl. I know they won’t mean to say anything but they might. 

"Smiling at him as she place a kiss on his check and said, " I told you last night I won’t tell anyone that includes my children. Now what is for breakfast?" 

Lou stood and said, " Hello I am glad you and both your children are okay. I can fix you some eggs if you would like?" 

Nodding yes Andrea said, " Yes thank you. I will get some coffee going. I am sure Jimmy will be awake soon and wanting to eat." As she walked over and kissed 
each child on the top of the head. Just then Lou said, " I think Jimmy will be asleep for awhile longer. He was awake when I got here. You two had fallen asleep on the couch by the time I had arrived. Jimmy was awake enough to talk and he told me all about what happened here and what happened between you two." 

”Who would have thought Jimmy could be the father of these to beautiful children. But seeing how pretty their mother is I can see why Jimmy lost his head and now why Buck was acting like he was a couple of nights ago.” 

Blushing with her eyes cast downward. Andrea said, "Well I don't know about how he was acting a couple of nights ago but I know that I have never felt safer then I do with him. Well what happened between me and Jimmy had a little help. I was drunk at the time but I could see why a girl might lose her head for him. He is full 
of adventure and excitement. But I preferrer the quite type." 

Smiling Lou said, " Well if its the quite type you like then you got yourself a good one here in Buck." 

Blushing Buck said, " Now you two need to stop that. You can give a fellow a big ego. (Turning to Lou Buck continued) Did Teaspoon tell you what happened here last night and that once Jimmy is ready to travel we are taking Andrea and the children to the station ‘til we can find the rest of the gang that did this." 

Nodding yes Lou said, " Yes he did. I didn't believe that Jimmy would allow 
himself to get hurt. But he never used his head much mainly when it cam to girls." 

Smiling and nodding in agreement Andrea said, " Well I need to get ready for work and I should check on Jimmy and see if he needs anything. Can you two keep an eye on these two for me?" 

Lou nodded yes but Buck stood and walked her to the stairs. As they reached the stairs He said, " I think I will go to work with you just to keep an eye on you. I 
don't feel right letting you go there alone. We don’t know who the other members of the gang are. Now don't argue with me about this." 

Looking at him she knew that he meant what he had just said. Andrea smiled at him saying, " Okay but let me change my clothes and check on Jimmy first. Then we can go. I know that I will be safe if you are there keeping an eye on me." leaning towards him she gave him a kiss on the check and headed up the stairs. 

Reaching the top of the stairs she entered her room feeling uneasy so she garbed some clothes and headed for the children’s room. After changing Andrea went into the room Jimmy was in. As she entered the room she saw that Jimmy was awake. Walking in Andrea said, "How are you this morning? Are you hungry? There are some eggs downstairs waiting for you if you want them." 

Smiling at her Jimmy said," I am fine so far. I would love some eggs. How are you this morning? It looks like you didn't get much sleep last night." 

Sitting down on the edge of the bed Andrea said, " Well I am okay. I didn't sleep well at all. I must of fallen asleep in Bucks arms because I woke up on the couch. 
I still can't believe all this happened last night. I am so sorry that you got hurt." 

Shaking his head he said, " Not worry about it. I manage to get myself hurt quite abet all on my own. It’s not your fault. Now where are you headed today?" 

Giving him a little laugh Andrea said, " I need to go to work. Now don't worry Buck is going to be there with me all day. I will be fine and Lou will be here with you and the children till I get home. Well I better get going. I will see you tonight." 

Reaching for her hand Jimmy said, " Please be careful. And let Buck protect you. Our children need their mother and I know it would kill Buck if something 
happened to you." 

Nodding yes. Just as she stood to leave the children came running into the room. They jumped onto the bed with Jimmy. They were followed by Buck and Lou. 

Andrea and Buck each garbed a child and took them off the bed. Andrea sat them down on the floor and said, " Now you two stop that. Your father doesn't need to wrestle with you today. He needs to rest up." Then she turned to Jimmy and said, 
"I will be careful." As Andrea left the room followed by Buck. 

As they left they could hear Jimmy say, " Please Lord take care of her." Smiling to herself Andrea and Buck made their way down the stairs and out the door. Before the children came running to her. 

The children came and gave her a kiss and then they headed up to get dressed. As Andrea and Buck walked to the restaurant Buck said, " I meant what I said about you being my girl. That if it’s okay with you." 

Nodding yes Andrea said, " yes its okay with me. I would love to be your girl." 
they reached the restaurant. As they walked in and met Sam on his way out. 

Sam turned to them and said, " I have talk to the owner and he is will to let Buck seat here the whole time you are working. I know this is an inconvenience for you but it would make me and Teaspoon as well and Buck and Jimmy feel better. Well better get going. See you two later." They both waved good bye and walked into the restaurant. 

 
Chapter 5

Walking into the restaurant Andrea said, "Buck why don't you sit at that table there, and I will get you some coffee. You should be able to see everything that goes on n here from there." 

Nodding yes Buck went and sat with his back against the wall. Andrea went and 
got him some coffee. Coming back to the table she poured him a cup. Just as she was turning to leave and start waiting on other people Buck grabbed her arm and said, "If you need anything just wave at me. I will keep an eye on you. But don't 
be afraid. No one will hurt you while I am here." Andrea smiled and went about doing her job. 
 

Meanwhile back at the house Lou was trying to help Jimmy down the stairs when he said, "Lou I can do it by myself. I was hit in the arm not my leg." 

Placing her hands on her hips Lou said, " Now Jimmy you are suppose to stay in bed. What kind of example are you setting for your children when you don't do what the doc says to do." 

Shaking his head Jimmy said, " Lou now you are beginning to sound like Emma. I promised you that I would stay on the couch. That way I can help keep an eye on these two. (pointing t the children playing on the floor.) Common Lou. I promise." nodding yes Lou helped him get settled onto the couch and then she went to 
make some lunch. 

While sitting on the couch Jimmy watched his children play. Just then Little Jimmy stood and walked over to where Jimmy sat saying, "Poppa can you read to us? Momma always reads to us." 

Looking a little embarrassed Jimmy said, " Sorry son I can't read. Maybe Lou can read to you when he is done fixing lunch. Okay. I just I should learn to read and write. What do you think son?" 

Crawling up on his lap little Jimmy said, "Okay poppa. You can learn with me." 
Then he gave him a hug and rejoined his sister playing on the floor. 

While watching the children play Jimmy started to dozed off. Then Lou came into the living room. She noticed that Jimmy had fallen asleep. Standing in the door 
way she watched the children play, thinking, " It is hard to believe that Jimmy is their father. But deep in her heart she knew that Jimmy had a hard live as a child, which explained why he was the way he was. But to see him be gentle and loving with his children was a site to see." She walked over to the children and said, " are you two hungry?" They looked up at her and started to yell. When she put her figure to her lips saying, "Quite your father is sleeping. Now you don't want to 
wake him do you?" They shock their heads no. As they stood to go to the kitchen Louise went over to Jimmy and pulled the blanket over him. The she gentle placed a kiss on his check. Lou watched as Jimmy smiled in his sleep. 

As they went into the kitchen little Jimmy said, " Lou can you read us a story. I asked Poppa but he said that he couldn't read." 

Smiling as she put lunch on the table, she said, " Sure I will read you a story after lunch. I knew that he couldn't read or write. But that doesn't mean that he isn't a good man. He is a loyal friend. Come on eat your lunch." 
 

While back at the restaurant Andrea brought Buck a plate for lunch he said, " How are you going?" 

Smiling she said, " okay I guess. I am just worried about my children. I know that they are okay Jimmy and Lou are with them." 

He smiled and reached out and garbed her hand and said, "I know but you still worry. Is it about time for you to get off?" 

Nodding yes Andrea said, " I have about three hours left. You can get up are straight your legs if you want." 

Nodding yes but he said, "I know but I would preferrer to sit here and watch you. Besides I have been watching a gentlemen over there by the bar that has been watching you. But I don't want you to think anything of it. I will be here if you 
need me. 

Swallowing hard she said, "You don't think that he is part of that gang do you?" 

Buck shock his head and said, " I don't think so, but I am not sure the sooner we can get you and the children to the station the better." He squeezed her hand to reassure her that everything was going to be okay. 
 

While back at the house. Lou cleaned up after lunch and walked back into the 
living room. As they entered the room they saw that Jimmy was awake. Smiling at him Lou said, " are you hungry?" 

Jimmy nodded yes and said, " I am sorry I fell asleep. I hope they didn't give you any trouble." 

Lou shock her head and said, " No they were perfect angels. It’s okay that you fell asleep. The more you sleep the faster you will heal you know that. I will be right back with your lunch." Lou left and went into the kitchen. 

Louise said, "Poppa are you going to be okay?" 

Jimmy smiled at her and said, " Come here and sit down both of you. I will be 
okay. I have been shot before. But how are you two holding up?" 

Louise crawled up into his lap and said, "I am doing okay. I miss momma though. 
I wonder if she is okay." 

Jimmy hugged her and said, " Your momma is safe. Mr. Cross isn't going to let anything happen to her. Okay so there is no need to worry about her." just then Lou came in carrying a tray with Jimmy lunch on it.
