TheLongRouteChapterFour The Long Route Chapter Four

Xander was singing as he made his way to the door of the offices of Angel Investigations. He had never felt so good in his entire life, except for walking a little funny where he was sore from all the times that Lindsey had taken him that day.

They had made love over and over during the day, only getting up long enough to use the bathroom, or grab something to eat. Lindsey had called in to work, and Xander had called Doyle reassuring him that he was alright and would see him at the office later. The boy knew that his friends would be full of questions, but right now he just wanted to savor the moment. He had never felt so happy and so free in his entire life. He had never had a lover near the quality of Lindsey before, and due to the movies *Thank goodness for porno movies* he had been able to keep up with his lover.

His lover. It had a nice ring to it. They had parted company at Lindsey's door, promising to meet each other again in a few days. Xander wished he could turn around and go back and just stay there forever, but he knew Lindsey had lots of work to catch up on and he had his friends to calm down. Doyle had seemed a little nervous on the phone when Xander had called earlier, and Xander could only hope that Angel hadn't been too hard on him and Cordelia. He knew how protective the vampire was about his friends, and he thought that he had become one of them in the time he had been there. Angel was probably angry with them for leaving him at a club with a stranger, and by the time that Xander had thought to call the office, he knew that Angel was probably ready to pull out his perfectly styled, gelled hair. Well, Xander would just have to reassure them all that he was fine, better than fine, he was great.

As Xander opened the door he took a deep breath. He knew this wasn't going to be easy but it had definitely been worth it. As he entered the room, he was grabbed and pushed up against the wall. He looked up to see who his attacker was and saw Angel looking at him in full vamp face.

"Where the hell have you been, Xander?" the vampire snarled. "Do you realize how worried we were about you?"

"Chill out, Angel, I'm fine as you can see," Xander said, trying to calm the vampire so that he would let go. He saw Doyle and Cordelia come up and try to pull Angel off of him before he noticed that Angel was sniffing him and growling under his breath. "Angel, come on man you're weirding me out here. What's with the sniffing and growling bit?"

At Cordelia and Doyle's insistence Angel had let Xander go but not before getting the scent of sex from the boy. Xander smelled like he had been rolling in a brothel. Angel knew he was scaring the three of them by yelling like that, but his demon was roaring.

He hated that the boy had been out all night having sex with some stranger, and ever since Cordelia and Doyle had informed him that Xander had left the club that night with someone, he hadn't been able to calm himself. He didn't know why it bothered him so badly that Xander had found someone, he just knew that he didn't like it one bit. He knew that he should be working on the case that Kate had come to talk to him about but he hadn't been able to concentrate on anything but where Xander could be and what he could be doing.

Off the looks of his friends, Angel tried to pull the demon back and let his human visage take over. "I'm sorry, Xander," the vampire muttered as he let the boy go and stepped back into the office. "I was worried. If anything happened to you, Buffy would never let me forget it."

"Oh, so that's the only reason you were worried then? For Buffy's sake? Because if that's all it is you needn't have. I'm sure she could care less one way or the other." Xander retorted.

"Fuck, Xander that's not the only reason and you know it," Angel said before he thought. He saw the boy look at him warily. "You're my friend, whether you know it or not and I take care of my friends."

"Well, that's nice, Angel, because I feel the same way, but I can assure you that I'm just fine. Better than fine actually, I'm frigging great." Xander added enthusiastically.

"And you wonder why I never bring any of my dates around to meet you," Cordelia huffed at the vampire, before turning her gaze back to Xander. "Over-protective, much," she said pointing at Angel and laughing.

Xander joined in the laughter as he felt the tension slowly leaving the room, although Angel still looked like he could go out and kill something right then and there. He felt bad that he had made his friends worry, but deep inside he was glad that he actually had someone to worry about him. He looked at Angel, Cordelia and then Doyle and decided an apology was in order.

"Look, I'm sorry if I worried all of you. I didn't mean to. It's just that - well we kinda lost track of the time and I called you as soon as I realized it, but I guess it was a little too late, huh?"

"Just a little," Doyle deadpanned. "So, I take it you and Lindsey had a good time together, yeah?"

"Doyle, that's Xander's business," Cordelia came to the boy's aid. "But I want all the details later," she whispered before returning to the computer.

"It's alright, Cordy," Xander took up for Doyle. "If I made you all worry, you have a right to know what happened. Well, not all the dirty details, but the gist of it anyway."

"So spill," she prompted. "From what I could see before Doyle rudely pushed me out of the club last night, your date was one fine looking man."

"Oh, yeah," Xander sighed, hoping he didn't sound like a girly-girl. "He wasn't really a stranger, well at least not in the 'I've never seen you before' kind of way. He used to come into the club where I worked in Oxnard, and he would watch my shows. I always wanted to meet him and come to find out he had wanted to meet me too but we were just both too shy I guess, to follow through."

"Didn't seem like he was that shy last night," Doyle pointed out.

"Obviously," Angel muttered. "And even though you had seen this guy around the club you were working at whatever possessed you to just go to his apartment and have sex with him?"

"Whoa, hold on a minute how did you know I had sex last night?" Xander asked, before he remembered the sniffing that Angel had been doing earlier. "Oh, yeah, vampire senses."

"We don't need to have vampire senses to know what happened, Xander. It's not like we're in grade school anymore," Cordelia teased. "Take in the state of Angel's clothes, the big grin on your face and the lateitude of your return and yeah, we could figure that out all by our lonesome."

"Yeah, I guess you could. Listen, guys Lindsey's a really nice man. We talked for a long time and then we went to his apartment. And before you jump down my throat, dad for going to his apartment so quickly, let me just say that I have lived on the hellmouth for years and I'm still here," he directed at Angel, before Angel could start giving him a lecture.

"But that doesn't mean you've always been safe now does it?" Angel growled. "Buffy and Cordy have filled me in on your love life before. Let's see there was praying mantis lady, the incan mummy girl and an ex-vengeance demon to mention a few."

"Well, yeah, there was those, but I knew Lindsey was different. Don't ask me how, I just did. As I was saying, he's a very nice man, very sexy and he lives in a big fancy apartment on the south side of town."

"Now for that last part, I'm thinking your channeling Cordelia, because I never took you for the kind of guy that cared about money and prestige." Doyle laughed.

"No, I really don't. I don't care if he lived in a dumpster in the worst part of town, there's always been something about Xander that attracted me to him. It's as simple as that. We're going to see each other again in a couple of days. He called into work today, and he said he had a lot to make up for when he returned." Xander blushed when he realized what he had just said.

"Well, I hope it was worth all the trouble you caused him then," Cordelia teased, raising her eyebrows and looking at Xander with concern.

"Oh, yeah, it was. Look can we just get on with work and leave the conversation of my personal life that is suddenly making me feel really uncomfortable." Xander asked his friends. Cordelia and Doyle both agreed, but Angel looked at him before saying, "If you want me to do that, you need to go downstairs and take a shower." He looked at Xander meaningfully. "You can borrow some more of my clothes, and while you're at it, you can throw those away." He added pointing at the clothes that Xander was wearing. As Xander made his way to the elevator, Angel stopped him. "But don't think this is over, I want to meet this guy before you go out with him again."

"Who do you think you are, Mr. Broody Vampire Guy? My dad or something? Because when I mentioned that before you did realize that I was using sarcasm?" Xander asked.

"For now, yeah," Angel replied before he gave the boy a shove toward the elevator. "Now get downstairs and shower because I can't concentrate on this case we're working on with the smell of sex in the air."

"I still don't see how you can smell it," Xander muttered as he entered the elevator. "I took a shower before I left his apartment." And with that the boy was gone.

*******************************************

Some forty five minutes later, Xander joined Cordelia, Doyle and Angel in the office. He had thrown the other clothes away like Angel had instructed and was now wearing a dark blue shirt and black jeans. He had been amazed to find jeans of any kind in Angel's wardrobe, because he never figured Angel or Angelus either one for the jeans kind of guy. Yes, Angel had definitely improved since coming to L.A.

"So what did I miss while I was gone," he asked the room at large. He had started liking the detective work and found it much more interesting than waiting for vamps or other various demons to invade like they did in Sunnydale.

"Well, other than Princess here trying to teach Angel manners and sensitivity, getting spewed on and choked by a big Kalimari demon and Kate needing help with a mobster by the name of Tony Papazian, nothing much." Doyle answered.

"A real, genuine mobster. Cool." Xander was looking forward to this. "Will this case involve someone, namely me, wearing a wire cause I gotta say, I've always wanted to do that."

"No, we've looked him up on the computer and I'm going to do some surveillance. You three are going to stay here and man the phones." Angel instructed.

"No, no way, Mr. Insensitivity. Cordy is right. Don't just make me sit over on the sidelines doing nothing like they make me do back in Sunnydale. I can handle myself. I want to help and you promised I could." Xander whined.

"Xander, I don't want you to get hurt, not any of you. Can't you understand that?" Angel asked the boy. Seeing the other two looking at him funny, he asked, "What?"

"Not to side with the other two in this room, Angel man but I don't think leaving us in the sewer to get choked to death by a Kalimari demon is keeping us safe." Doyle told the vampire. "Why not give the kid a chance?"

"And what will you two be doing while we're on this little expedition?"

"We're going out together again tonight." Doyle answered.

"What? Where was I when we made this plan, Mr. Funny man?" Cordy asked.

"Well, you had that audition you were so nervous about remember. I thought I would go with you for support."

"Gee, that's so nice of you, isn't it Cordy?" Xander asked, trying to help his friend out. "Now I think Angel could learn a lesson or two about sensitivity from Doyle, don't you?"

"Oh, who are you kidding?" Cordy grabbed Doyle's hand as she walked toward the door. "He wants to come with me so that he can try to hit on all the pretty girls there auditioning for the same part." Doyle turned and gave Xander and Angel a thumbs up sign before leaving.

After they were gone, Xander turned to Angel. "Well, I think he's making progress don't you think he's making progress?"

"Maybe, you never can tell with Cordelia."

"True, but I think that she will come around and see what a great guy Doyle is. It may take a little while, but hey look, she chose me and I'm not that bad right?" Xander said jokingly.

"Are we talking about then or now?" Angel asked him as he picked up his bag and started walking to his car.

"Was that a joke?" Xander asked as he followed him out the door. "Because I really can't tell anymore with you."

Angel just shrugged at the boy playfully, making his way to his car with Xander following closely behind.

****************************************

As they were driving to the pier, Xander turned to Angel. "So how do you know where to find this guy we're going to be observing? I mean the police couldn't find him and all. Did you track him down by going through the records at the bus terminals, airports and all that because Kate told you he was going to skip town? Before Angel could answer Xander added thoughtfully, "No, wait. You said this guy was a big time mobster. He would have his own private jet or boat or something to get away on right? Like on Miami Vice. But then the police would have been able to track him down. How did you all figure it out?"

"We looked at the coroner's report and we noticed that people who had been murdered were washing up on the same beach. He had sort of a dumping ground for his bodies out on the pier, so I figure that's the way he's leaving too. It's somewhere he would feel safe."

"Oh, that's good thinking. How do you do it Angel? I mean you are really good at finding bad guys. Oh, wait do you channel your experiences from when you were Angelus. You know put your feet in the guy's shoes so you would know what he was going to do next?"

"Something like that." Angel smiled at the excited way the boy was acting. "You really love this kind of thing don't you?

"Anything to be in the ballgame, instead of sitting on the bench, coach." Xander said dryly. As they pulled up in the shadows of the pier, they saw four men standing there, looking as if they were waiting for someone. "I think that's probably our guy." Xander said pointing at them. "He looks like a shady character to me."

"Yeah, that's him," Angel said as he reached for his cell phone. He dialed the police station and asked for Kate. When she came on the line he told her where they were. "8843 Hyperion Way, right off Pier 39, San Pedro."

"You found him, you're sure?" Kate asked excitedly.

"Mac's Salvage Depot, northwest side, he's got some muscle on hand."

"I'm on my way, just get out of there." And with that she hung up.

Angel shut off his cell phone and got ready to leave. "So what, we're just leaving?" Xander asked.

"That's what Kate said to do." Angel replied.

"Since when do you listen to what anybody says?" Xander asked him. "What if the police don't get here before this guy takes off?"

Before Angel could answer him, he noticed something out of the corner of his eye. Picking up his binoculars, he saw a boat coming to the shore. Damn, Xander was right. If he left now, Little Tony would definitely get away.

"Hey, what's with the binoculars?" Xander asked. "Aren't vampires supposed to see all kinds of things in the dark? And by the way, what did you see?"

"We can see so far out, but I just barely made out something until I looked. It's a boat coming to take Little Tony far away from here, I'm thinking." He looked from the boat to Tony and noticed he and his henchmen were moving to get ready to board the ship. "Damnit." He put his hand on the door and was just getting ready to open it, when Xander stopped him.

"Where do you think you're going?" Xander whispered.

"I'm going to go and chat with them for awhile and stall them until Kate and the police show up." Angel answered. "And by the way, why are you whispering?"

"Sorry, force of habit on the whispering." When Angel looked at him, not seeming to understand Xander continued, "You know chasing vamps through cemeteries, preternatural hearing and all. And what are you thinking? You can't go up to those guys dressed like that and strike up a conversation. Number 1 reason - you look like a P.I."

"That's because I am one, Xander."

"Precisely, and number 2 reason you can't go, well let me try to be sensitive and say that your people skills suck."

"Thank you that was very sensitively put." Angel said, a little hurt.

"Sorry again. Look, I think I have an idea." Angel watched as the boy turned around and grabbed something from the back seat of Angel's car. "I had an overnight bag in here from where I went to Cordy's and I never took it out. Let me just change into something and I'll go over there and keep what's his name busy." And with that he was out of the car, taking his shirt off and replacing it with one of those hideous flowered shirts that Angel remembered so well from Sunnydale. He then reached down and picked up an old straw hat and placed it on his head. "See, isn't this much better, now?"

"Yeah, it's really inconspicuous," Angel snorted. "You don't stand out at all."

"See, that's the style I was looking for. I want to be the Zeppo, stupid guy you know. It goes along with my plan. Listen, just follow me and stay in the shadows. If you hear me screaming like a sissy girl, please feel free to come in and take over at any time." And before Angel could stop him the boy was running over to where Little Tony and his men were standing.

Angel was really annoyed now. The kid was going to get himself killed. He silently followed and watched from the shadows as Xander engaged Little Tony and his men into a conversation.

"Hi," Xander said as he went to stand next to one of the bodyguards, his hands in his pockets looking like a very dumb, very lost tourist. "This is exciting isn't it? I just love a boat trip." He was grinning from ear to ear, and even though Angel was still mad at him for taking this risk, he had to admit he was loving watching Xander enthusiastically playing undercover guy.

"Who's the mook?" Little Tony asked the bodyguard. Before the man could answer him, Xander extended his hand around the guy to try to shake Tony's hand. "Herb Saunders, Baltimore."

"That's Herb Saunders," the big, and obviously very stupid bodyguard told Tony.

"Cripes, the freeways you people have in this town, I've been driving around in circles all day but the brochure did say boats leaving every two hours," Xander said all in one breath so that no one could interrupt him.

"I think you're still lost," big dumb guy said.

"That's not the boat to Catalina," Xander asked innocently, pointing at the boat. "Are you sure? I could have sworn the ticket said Pier 39, it's here somewhere, I just had it." He started patting his pockets, acting like he was looking for some lost ticket.

"Come on, get out of here," the bodyguard growled. Uh oh, Xander thought, he was running out of time. "Benny, I don't like that guy," Tony told the other man. Xander felt it was time for him to take some action and he belted the big guy, what was his name, oh yeah, Benny in the face as hard as he could. Wow, he didn't even fall down, Xander thought.

He backed up quickly, watching the other man circling around him. He hoped it didn't take Angel long to step in from wherever he was hidden. He started babbling, "It's the hat wasn't it? I knew the hat was too much," he asked a stunned Tony. He saw the other guy making a go at him from his left and he blocked his punch, hitting him instead, knocking him to the ground. Just then he heard Angel hit the other man and the sound of police sirens nearing them. As Tony tried to run he was caught by a very pissed woman cop that Xander surmised was Kate. Man, she reminded him a lot of Buffy. He wondered if Angel realized that himself.

*************************************

"I think you better quit yelling at me and talk to the nice lady that is making her way over here right now as we speak," Xander told Angel a few minutes later, stopping Angel from yelling at him in mid rant.

"Which part of just get out of there gave you the trouble?" she asked Angel.

"It was me that did this, don't blame Angel," Xander piped up. When Kate looked at him he put out his hand to shake hers. "Xander Harris. I was helping Angel and I didn't hear what you said on the phone there, so I saw them trying to get away and I decided we had to stop them and before Angel could stop me I was over there and then he had to be over there, you know to help me, so it's not really his fault, it's mine," Xander said all in one breath.

Angel smiled at Kate's bewildered look. "That's what's known as babble speak. Yes, Xander does that quite well. I think what he was trying to say is he's sorry." Angel told her.

Kate looked at Xander. "So you decided to dress like a road flare and put my ass and Angel's on the line?"

"Wow, I've never heard of my style of dressing being called a road flare before. Unstylish, maybe, but don't you think you're being a little harsh?" Xander asked her trying to ease the tension.

Kate just sighed. "Look, just go. I'll figure out something to tell my lieutenant." She started to walk off.

"Look, I was just trying to help. I don't know all the rules of being a policeman or private investigator and I'm sorry again if I got you in trouble with your boss." Xander looked at the woman with big, sad brown eyes and slowly she smiled at him.

"It's o.k., Xander was it?" When the boy nodded, she continued. "I think I can cut you a break, but don't let it happen again. I don't want to see you get hurt."

"Nothing against you, cause I just met you and everything, but I get that a lot and I'm kinda tired of hearing it. I'm a grown man who can take care of himself." And with that, Xander stomped back to Angel's car, getting in and slamming the door behind him.

"Did I mention he was sensitive about that?" Angel said. Kate just shook her head at him and walked to the police car. As Angel stood there, he saw Little Tony looking at him weird. He started up the car and headed home, wondering why he felt this case wasn't quite over.

*************************************

The next morning, Angel, Cordelia and Xander were in the office discussing the case and Angel let them in on his feelings. As Cordelia was rimming Angel out for not being sensitive enough to notice her shoes, Doyle walked in. "Great shoes, new? Doyle asked and before Cordelia could answer he turned to face Angel. "So you were right, Papazian's planning something."

"What did you hear," Angel asked him.

"Papazian's planning something."

"That's it?" Angel couldn't believe his ears.

"Johnny Red says quote Papazian's planning something."

"I thought he might be planning something."

"See you were right," Doyle congratulated Angel.

"Wow, you guys sure are ace detectives," Xander teased.

"Let's go check out this Johnny Red and see if he can give us a little more information than that." Angel said and Doyle and Xander followed him out. They went to see Johnny and figured out that Papazian was after Kate. Angel told them to go back to the offices, but Xander didn't want to.

"I want to go with you, Angel. I need to apologize to Kate for throwing a tantrum like I did last night. Please, I promise I'll stay out of your way after that." Xander gave his puppy dog eyes, and Angel finally complied.

When they got to the police precinct they found Kate wandering around holding a cup of coffee and staring into space. "Angel and Xander right?"

"Yeah, I just wanted to come along with Angel so that I could apologize to you for being such a smartass last night." Xander told her hurriedly.

"No, that's o.k., really, I actually needed to apologize to you. That's what my sensitivity trainer says anyway." Kate smiled at him.

"Well, then I guess we're both forgiven. That's great. I'll just go away and let you and Angel talk." Xander said getting ready to leave.

"No, stay it's alright, really. As a matter of fact, I wanted to thank both of you for what you did last night. Listen what are you two doing tonight around 8ish, my father's having this retirement party thing with a bunch of his old cop buddies. I'm supposed to say a few words and it would be nice if there were at least a couple of people there that weren't armed. It would be a favor." Kate asked, looking hopefully at Angel. Oh, man the Buffy almost look-a-like had a crush on Angel.

"Sure. What about you, Xander?" Angel asked the boy.

Xander thought for a few minutes. "Well, I don't have any plans for tonight, so why not. You know me. I love to go anywhere they're serving free food. They are serving food there, right? With beer and everything? It won't just be doughnuts and coffee will it, because I like a variety and I've heard that cops love that stuff."

Kate laughed. "Yep, plenty of food and beer all around. And doughnuts aren't all we cops eat."

Angel broke into the conversation. "I'm glad you two are bonding over doughnuts, but we have a bigger problem. Kate, I think you may be in real danger. Look, I've heard some things. I don't know the specifics yet, but I think Papazian's taken a contract out on you."

"Wow, he's really acting out isn't he?" Kate asked them.

Xander and Angel looked at each other. "Well, yeah," Angel told her as Xander said, "Well, duh." "He wants you dead." Angel continued.

"I get that," Kate told him. "But, I'm saying that he must be in some kind of pain to have to strike out at others like that."

"Are you o.k.?" Angel asked with concern.

"God, listen to me, suddenly I'm Dr. Laura." She shook her head.

"Personally, I thought it sounded more like something Dr. Phil would say." Xander contradicted.

As they left the precinct, Xander looked at Angel. "Is she always like that?"

"Hardly ever. Something's up. We better keep an eye on her at the party tonight." And with that they left agreeing to meet at the restaurant later that night.

**************************************

When Xander got to the restaurant, he hurried inside searching for Angel. He saw Kate and Angel walking toward an older man. He hurried over to join them, just as Kate was making introductions.

"Happy retirement, Daddy," she said as she leaned in to give him a kiss on the cheek.

"Who is this?" He asked rudely, pointing at Angel. He didn't notice Xander standing behind them and for that matter, Kate and Angel hadn't noticed he was there either. What a way to make a guy feel at home, Xander thought as he listened to them.

"This is Angel, he's a friend. Angel, this is my father."

"Hello, Mr. Lockley, congratulations," Angel said as he shook the other man's hand.

"For what?" Mr. Lockley snapped back. "All I did was live this way and not get shot."

Kate looked perplexed. "Why do you do that?"

"Do what?"

"Pretend important things don't matter."

"So, Angel," he said, ignoring Kate and her question. Well, at least he wasn't the only one that happened to Xander thought, feeling sorry for Kate. "How long you been seeing Katie?"

"Well, we're pretty new friends," Angel answered hesitantly.

"Well, good to see you're out with a man." He looked at Angel and said, "I was starting to wonder if she was leaning in the other direction altogether."

"And just what would be wrong with that?" Xander asked, stepping around Angel and making his presence known. He felt Angel take hold of his shoulder but he shrugged it off.

"Who are you?" Mr. Lockley asked, sounding a lot like Xander's father, which only pissed the boy off more. He hated seeing parents treat their kids that way. He hated what his parents had put him through, and he knew that even though Willow's mom and dad never hit her, they never paid any attention to her, no matter how hard she tried to achieve to please them. Xander always thought that that was why Willow was such an overachiever. Even though he had just met Kate, he thought she was a nice woman and didn't deserve the treatment her father was giving her now, first by ignoring her and then by insinuating that she was a lesbian. That was a whole other subject. Her dad had just stepped on two very sensitive toes of his and he wasn't about to let this pass, Angel or no Angel. Geez, wasn't there any good parents around anymore, except for Buffy's mom, Joyce.

"I'm Xander Harris. I'm an acquaintance of your daughter's and a friend of Angel's."

Kate's dad looked back and forth between Xander and Angel. "Oh, I get it, you two are together," he said disgustedly looking at Angel and Xander.

"No, as far as I know Angel is straight." Xander said, not noticing the look that passed over Angel's face. "But I happen to be bi-sexual and I don't see anything wrong with that, nor would I think there would be anything wrong with Kate if she were. A person's sexuality has nothing to do with how good or bad a person is. You just can't go around making judgments like that. People might actually think you were a bigot or something."

"Is that so?" Mr. Lockley said, standing up and getting into Xander's face.

"Yea, that's so," Xander said, not backing down an inch. "And for you to be sitting alone at your own retirement party tells me that you may be respected for what you've done at your job, but you're not very well liked."

"What would you know about me you----" Mr. Lockley began, but before he could finish, Angel pushed Xander aside and said, "I wouldn't finish that sentence if I were you, Mr. Lockley." Xander saw the look on Angel's face and knew he was an inch away from ripping Lockley's head off his shoulders.

Before anything could happen, a voice came from the stage. "Alright, everyone, before we cut the cake the other Officer Lockley, the good looking one would like to say a few words. Kate."

Everyone started clapping and Kate made her way up front. Her father sat back down on the stool to listen, ignoring Angel and Xander. Angel was glad the man had finally sat down because he had grown increasingly angry over the man's attitude with his own daughter, much less when he confronted Xander. He listened as Kate's speech went from congratulating her father on his career as a policeman to their more personal life and the way he had closed himself off from her after her mother's death.

Angel looked over at Xander and saw the tears welling up in the boys eyes. He realized that Xander must have some of the same issues with his dad as Kate did with hers. As he did with his own so many long years ago. He could empathize with these young people, because his father had hurt him badly then, so badly that he had been seduced by a young blonde haired woman in a dark alley. After he had become a vampire, the first thing he did was go to his house and extract justice upon everyone in that house, but mostly his father. He was startled out of his thoughts about his father when he heard loud noises and saw that a brawl had started between two policemen. He had rushed over to break them apart and after he had broken them up he took Kate and Xander and headed towards his office.

He knew that even though Kate may have problems with her father, she would not have been this emotional in public. And what was wrong with all the policemen there? Some were openly crying, while others were arguing. Emotions were definitely running at an all time high. He needed to get to the office and figure this out and see what was going on, how it would affect Papazian's attempt on Kate's life, if indeed there was one.

"Here drink this," Angel said, giving Kate the cup of coffee.

"You have the most intense eyes," Kate whispered to Angel. He looked rather embarrassed as she continued, "I see such an old soul."

"He gets that a lot you know," Doyle deadpanned, as Xander poked him with his elbow.

"And I thought that enigmatic thing was just a thing to get women, but the truth is you don't have an insincere bone in your body, do you?" she asked, flirting blatantly.

Now Xander couldn't resist adding his two cents. "Oh, you haven't seen Angel wake up on the wrong side of the bed, so to speak. Keep that up, however, and you might."

Angel shot him a warning look and he shut up. "Kate, I need you to tell me about the sensitivity training. Who's running it?" Angel said, trying to get Kate to focus.

"You want to go? It's pretty wonderful. Hits you where you live," she said tapping her chest.

"I need to know his name." Angel was still trying desperately to get Kate to focus, but she was having none of it.

"We all need so much." she sighed, handing the coffee cup back and starting to get to her feet.

Cordelia was beginning to look annoyed. "What's her deal," she asked Xander and Doyle. "Too much," and she made a drinking motion with her hand.

"Thumb sucking?" Doyle asked.

"Alcohol, dummy," Cordelia snapped.

"Don't look at me like that," Doyle said, offended at Cordelia's tone. "I'm not the one that needs to brush up on their finger pantomime. It's something to do with this training she had at work." Doyle continued as he watched Kate hand Angel a piece of paper. He looked at it and walked into the outer office.

"Yeah, you should have seen everyone at the party. Kate got all emotional during a speech for her father and then there was all this fighting and crying and I didn't even get a doughnut." Xander told them in a rush. They looked up to see Kate standing in front of Cordelia and Doyle.

"Someone's got a crush," she sing songed. "It's right there, how he feels about you and you don't know what to do about it," she said to Cordelia.

"Please, we just joke around." Cordelia said, not very convincingly.

"Where is the truth? Where is the truth? He's hiding behind Mr. Humor. I mean look at Doyle, really look at him. What do you see?" She asked not realizing how close she was to the truth, Xander thought. He saw Doyle look at Cordelia hopefully.

"A bad double-poly blend?" Cordelia asked.

"That's defense, Cordelia. Maybe you should try to open your heart to a new possibility." Kate told her.

"That's right, Kate, tell her what we already know," Xander prompted. When Cordelia gave him a glare, he looked at her innocently. "What? Come on, I've seen the way you two act around each other and I know there's more there than meets the eye."

"Hey, they're starting to make some sense," Doyle told the girl.

"Angel!" Cordelia yelled, feeling trapped. Just then Angel walked back into the room. "I've got his address, 342 Fletcher."

"What are your secrets, Angel? What aren't you telling me?" Kate turned and asked Angel. Man, Xander didn't know what that sensitivity trainer had done to the woman but she was dead on everything she was saying. She was acting like an empath demon.

"I'm so glad we came down to watch Late Night with creepy cop lady," Cordelia said snidely.

"You came down here to help Xander watch her while I find this guy. Don't let her out of your sight." Angel told the three of them before he took off.

Xander watched as Kate started crying again. He went over and put his arms around her. She cried on his chest for a few minutes before looking up at him. "And what about you, Xander?"

"What do you mean what about me," Xander asked nervously. So far she had been right about everything she had said and he was afraid that she might actually see all the things he tried so desperately to hide. "Hey, you two, why don't you go in the other room and talk about what Kate just said. I think it's time that you all really let your hair down so to speak." He urged them toward the door.

"How come we don't get to hear what she says about you?" Cordelia complained.

"Because, it's more important for you and Doyle to work out your feelings for each other instead of listening to her talk about little old me," he told them, ushering them out and closing the door behind them against Cordy's protests that she and Doyle didn't have anything to work out. He turned back to Kate. "I know how you felt, tonight. I've felt that way many times myself."

"I know, I feel a kind of kinship with you, Xander. I'm sorry my dad said such mean things to you before. Believe me I don't feel that way."

"It's o.k. I've heard worse believe me, much worse." Xander sighed.

"Yes, you have. But you don't need to close your heart off to your friends, Xander. Give them a chance. They're ready to listen now."

Xander made Kate sit back down, and handed her back the cup of coffee Angel had made. Maybe it was time to call Sunnydale and at least talk to Willow. It wouldn't be long until Thanksgiving and then Christmas, and he and Willow had never missed spending Christmas Eve together so that he could do his snoopy dance for her. The tradition had started in elementary school and had never ended. He didn't want it to end now.

He made himself a promise that as soon as this case was over, he would call Willow and see if she was ready to talk. But then, what would happen between him and Lindsey? Could they maintain a long distance relationship? Which brought up the question of whether Lindsey felt like this was a relationship. Xander was brought out of his thoughts by Cordelia and Doyle re-entering the room.

"Can I get you another cup of coffee or a valium, or both?" Cordelia asked smiling at Kate.

"He walked out on me, he just walked out," Kate said rocking back and forth in the chair.

"Oh, he'll be back," Cordelia said misunderstanding Kate.

"I think she means her dad," Xander said and Kate nodded her head in agreement.

"I have to find him," she said, jumping up out of the chair as Doyle tried to stop her.

"Maybe you should just hold off on that for the time being. Angel said that we should wait here." Doyle pleaded with her.

"If she wants to go, then I'll go with her," Xander found himself saying. He didn't know why but he felt like the woman really did need to talk to her dad and make things right.

"See he understands," Kate said, pointing at Xander. "Look, I hear what you say, but I need to find my daddy now," she said grabbing her purse and looking through it.

"Detective Lockley, you're not exactly yourself at the moment," Doyle tried once again to stop the woman, giving Xander a harsh glance. "Why don't we all just--"

"Help each other," Kate interrupted him.

"Right, by staying here together." Doyle thought he was finally getting through to the woman.

"Well, we could do that but see I have this--"

"Personal problem," Cordelia added, rolling her eyes. "You gonna share till dawn."

"Gun," Kate finished, whipping her gun out of her purse and gesturing in the air. Cordelia and Doyle both stepped back with their hands in the air like they were being arrested. "And I don't want to come off as insensitive but if either one of you try to stop me I'll have to blow you the crap away, because I'm going to find my dad."

"Can I go with?" Xander asked her. "I kinda want to apologize for the way I acted earlier."

"That's very sweet and...sensitive of you," Kate told him. She gestured with her gun for him to go ahead of her. "Okay. You can drive my car, because I'm feeling kind of funny."

"Xander, maybe you shouldn't ---" Doyle began.

"It'll be alright, Doyle, she won't shoot me...I hope," He added under his breath. "And besides, if we're together, somebody will be able to watch out for her." Together, he and Kate left the office and walked to her car. He opened the door for her and she got in, thankfully, putting her gun away. He went around and got in the driver's side, finding the keys still hanging in the ignition. As he started it up, he asked her where they should go. When she told him he headed for the police station.

"What are we going to do Doyle? She had a gun. What if she shoots Xander by mistake?" Cordelia was in overdrive.

"We're going to do what all good private eyes do in this situation," Doyle said. When Cordy looked at him like she didn't understand he continued, "We're going to follow them."

"Oh, yeah, right." Cordy grabbed the cell phone she had, and while she tried to call Angel they walked to Doyle's car and started to follow Kate.

****************************************

When Xander and Kate entered the police station, Xander was amazed at the way the other officers were acting. It was even worse than the party. Cops were yelling at each other, some were crying, it was a total madhouse. Xander sat down at a desk and picked up the phone and tried to call Angel and like Cordelia and Doyle before him, he got no answer. He then dialed Cordelia's cell phone. Cordelia answered the phone screaming, "Xander, is that you? Are you alright? She didn't kill you did she?"

"No, ghost Xander wouldn't be calling you cause I don't think this phone would have the reception to reach the great beyond. Boy, that would be a long distance call now wouldn't it?" He joked.

"Xander, get serious. Doyle and I were following you but we got held up by a car accident. Doyle figured by the direction you were heading, you guys went to the police station, and if you did that is so not a good idea. You need to get her out of there. You do remember there's a crazy mobster wanting to kill Kate don't you? He's being held in that very jail where you two are now?

"Yes, Cordelia I do remember that's why I called. You and Doyle need to haul your asses down here and help me. This place is a madhouse. Cops are fighting and crying and...hold on just a minute," Xander told her as he caught the mutterings of a cop that was passing him.

"It's not right. Trapped together that way. Bigger ones picking on weaker ones," he said as he walked to the cell doors with the keys in his hands.

"Hold up a minute there buddy, and I'll help you with that," Xander told the cop as he placed his hand on the man's arm, stopping him. Then into the phone, "And Cordelia, hurry please. I've got a crazy cop here who wants to let all the bad guys out, and that includes the man that wants to kill Kate." Xander told her, hanging up the phone and following the other man trying to think what to say. "Hey, I think you've got the wrong keys," he said trying to make his words sound sincere.

"Really?" the cop asked him, looking at the keys he was holding in his hands. "I don't think so." Now he looked confused.

"Please let me take a look at them," Xander said motioning for the cop to give him the keys. God, I hope this works, because if not we're going to have a lot of mad inmates in the same room as crazy cops. Somehow, that just sounded so bad. "Look, I said please. What did they teach you in that sensitivity class?" He asked the cop sternly.

It was a long moment before the cop finally handed him the keys. When he did, Xander made a mad dash down the hall, trying to find some place to hide the keys. He looked back to see the cop chasing him and all of the sudden it was like a Keystone cops movie or something. They were both running in between the desks while the other cops continued to yell and cry. Xander darted a glance in Kate's direction and saw her laying her head on her desk, crying, the phone still in her hand. Well, at least she was safe for now Xander thought. He ran to the window and opened it, throwing the keys down into the bushes. He turned to look at the cop and said, "Ooops. Now what are you going to do? The keys are gone." He hoped the cop hadn't thought what had just run through his mind. If one policeman had the keys to the cells, then all of them probably did. *You stupid idiot*.

The cop fell to his knees crying. "It's not right to keep human beings caged up like animals." the man wailed. This was just too weird. Xander turned toward the inmates and taunted, "Sorry, no getting out of jail free, do not pass go, do not collect $100.00." he told them, giving himself a pat on the back. So immersed in his internal congratulating of himself that he didn't notice the other policeman who came up behind him.

"It's just not right," the new police officer was explaining to Xander as he started to unlock the key pad and setting all the prisoners free with several flicks of buttons. "Makes them more brutal than when they came in."

"Are all the cops in this fucking town insane?" He yelled out to no one in particular. He watched as the cop opened the final remaining door. As he did so, the inmates all came out of their cells, looking ready for a fight. The cop stopped in front of them and started his big speech, "Remember this brothers. An act of kindness is just as manly----" and that's all he got out before all the prisoners were attacking him.

Xander didn't know what to do. On one hand, he wanted to help the cop but knew there were too many prisoners for just him alone. He knew he should go watch out for Kate, who had now stood up and was yelling for her daddy. Then something occurred to him. They kept lots of weapons in police stations. If the inmates, especially Little Tony got hold of those, they were toast.

He decided to make a hasty retreat and try to get Kate to leave with him before the prisoners got tired of playing 'beat the cop'. As he turned he ran straight into the biggest man he thought he had ever seen in his life. Just as the guy reached for him, another cop came between them and said, "I want to express my regret for treating you so shabbily, so I composed a poem." He started reciting the poem he had written and Xander took advantage of the reprieve and ran away just as he saw the big guy clobber the cop. Xander couldn't really blame the big guy, the poem from what he had heard, was terrible. As he tried to make his way over to try and find Kate, he wondered where the hell Angel, Cordelia and Doyle were.

***********************************

Outside the police station, Cordelia and Doyle had just arrived. They heard all kinds of yelling, fighting and crying coming from inside. Before they could move forward they saw Angel running towards them.

"What are you doing here?" Angel asked them.

"It's Kate and Xander. We followed them here. Kate pulled a gun on us and Xander offered to drive her here to keep her protected." Doyle told him.

"She's totally lost it," Cordelia added. "She looked like she was ready to do some damage and I don't want her to damage Xander."

"Yeah, and it's not just her, by the look of things," Doyle said, pointing towards the station.

"The whole place is going nuts," Cordelia told Angel. "Xander is in there by himself with a bunch of crazy cops. This is so not good."

Just as they expected to watch Angel go in there and save the day, he just smiled sweetly at them and said, "Okay. I think somebody needs a hug." He grabbed both of them and pulled them to him, hugging them tightly. They struggled to get loose and when they did Cordelia looked at Angel and said, "Hey, what's your damage?"

"I think you just found Mr. Sensitivity," Doyle told Cordelia, pointing at Angel.

"He was right in here the whole time," He said patting his chest. "Just waiting to come out. God, what our folks do to us, huh?"

"Oh, he put the whammy on you," Cordelia accused Angel. "You stink with whammy."

"She's right," Angel said dreamily. "The talking stick it's cursed alright."

"There's a stick that talks?" Cordelia asked Doyle.

Angel walked towards Cordelia. "Cordelia do you have any idea just how precious you are?"

Doyle got between them. "Alright, let's just talk about the stick yeah?"

Angel started to explain to them. "He uses it as a talisman. Anyone who handles it becomes affected. He admitted it to me after I threatened him with physical violence," he said with self loathing.

"What's his trouble?" Cordelia asked Doyle.

"Wolfram and Hart hired this guy to neutralize the police so that Little Tony could make his escape. It'll wear off."

"Soon?" Cordelia asked hopefully.

"So there was never any contract on Detective Lockley?" Doyle asked Angel.

"No," Angel answered, shaking his head. "Little Tony's plan all along was to kill her himself. Poor guy."

"Poor guy?" Cordelia looked at Angel with disbelief.

"Well, he's got issues," Angel said defensively.

"Angel, man, you've got to snap out of this," Doyle insisted.

"Right now," Cordelia demanded. "It's time for you to get all vampy, grrrrr, Kate and Xander need you."

"I don't want to," Angel said like a little boy. "You both withdraw when I go vamp. I feel you judge me."

"We won't judge you, will we?" Cordelia asked Doyle. He shook his head no. "Give it a try." she encouraged Angel.

"Closeness is too important to me right now." Angel said stubbornly.

"Angel, man, Kate and Xander are in there." Doyle grabbed Angel's arm trying to lead him to the police station.

"Along with killer guy," Cordelia added.

When Angel wouldn't move, Doyle decided he had had enough. He made his way to the door of the station determined to help Kate and Xander any way he could. He tried the doors and found them locked. He saw a policeman coming towards the door and waited for him to open it.

"We're closed," the policeman informed him.

"You're the police, you can't close!" Doyle screamed at him.

"Why not?" the officer asked him. "Haven't we done enough? It's always find this, rescue that with you people, well see how you like it." He pulled the shade down on the door and walked off, leaving Doyle wondering what the hell he was going to do now.
