Stuck on Daggers
I saw Seeds of Faith again,and saw the Dagger of Helios in the plot.I knew
it from somewhere. It was in The Quest: Xena was dead,after being slammed
into a tree by a savage,and Gabby had to take her to the mountains to a
healer Xena knew when she was with M'Lila.
Xena dies,and Gabby has her in a coffin taking her back to buried next to
Lyceus in Amphipolis.
The scene changes in Quest to Autolycus,who is in the act of stealing the
Dagger of Helois( a god we never have seen). Xena's spirit,or soul,is inside
Auto,and it was she who gave him the idea of stealing it. He gets away and
ultimately Velasca,an Amazon who vied for the queenship with Gabby,gets the
dagger from Auto when he is captured trying to steal Xena's body before it
is burned.
Velasca immediately recognizes the dagger,and then knows where to go to use
it.It is a key of sorts,and it fits into a shaped slot in a round
safe-combination device that turns with the dagger in it.When the door
turns,an opening becomes apparent in the ceiling,and the Ambrosia falls
out,with Velasca catching it.Instead of eating it at once,she sniffs it as
if taking time out to smell the flowers.
Xena's spirit enters Gabby and Vel and Gab fight on the hanging ropes.Gab
twists Vel's arm,and the dagger cuts the rope,and Vel falls,we supposed,to
her death. The dagger goes with her...there is fire in a deep pit below.
This was in Season 2,and late in Season 5,we see Xena wanting Callisto to
show her where the dagger is,because she wanted to kill Ares for killing
Eli.
How does Xena know that the dagger can NOW kill gods? Velasca had it
all...she had the Ambrosia(the power to become a goddess) and the
dagger,which we NOW know,can kill gods.
Cal shows Xena where the dagger is,and Xena holds it to Ares' throat...he
knows how powerful it is,and accepts his fate. Xena tosses it away,and Ares
grabs it and says he will kill Xena,who then says that she will be another
martyr. Ares,with a weapon to kill gods(since at this point Zeus is still
alive) throws it against a wall,and the dagger explodes.It didn't get
damaged,I guess,in Quest.Besides,the new dagger is more ornate with a wavy
blade.
End of a powerful dagger. Then Renpics,in Motherhood,gives Xena the power to
kill gods by sending a fire column to earth on the beach...it has a face in
it,and we don't know who it is.NOW Xena can AGAIN kill Gods,not with a
special weapon,but one of her own..a sword or Chakram.
Why didn't she just escape with the dagger of Helios when she had the chance
just in case she needed it in the future?
Next,we have Sacrifice 2,at the end of Season 3. The Hindsblood Dagger is
very important,we are told.It can KILL A GOD. From the Hercules show,we saw
Callisto with Hindsblood in a locket.Iolaus grabs the locket and smears some
blood on a dagger.Cal grabs the locket and leaves,not knowing what he
did.Hercules slams the dagger into a stone railing at a temple. Xena knows
where this is. She needs the dagger to kill Hope.We are all wrapped up in
the deadly dagger that we forgot something. I feel as tho I was had. Hope
was wounded in Sac.2 by the Chakram.If she can be hurt,she can be killed.
Xena is secretive about the dagger when she enlists Callisto's help to stop
Hope.Cal cannot find it.Xena puts forth a ruse about dumping Joxer----he
then goes to get this needed dagger.
The fight at Dakak's fire-pit is going on,and Joxer tosses the dagger to
Xena. When captured as planned to get into the temple,Joxer was not even
searched...strange.
Xena corners Ares,who circles around her and backs off. Xena approaches
Hope,who seems not to be able to use her telekenetic powers as before...she
can only make Xena move in slow-motion. Gabby jumps and takes herself and
Hope down the lava shaft,killing themselves(or so we thought).I believe
Gabby died then.
The point to all this: After Xena kills Callisto with the Hindsblood
Dagger,which can kill gods,what did she do with it? We never heard of it
again,and what better protection from the gods than with that?
She later,in God-Fearing Child,knows that a rib from Chronos used by
Hercules,killed Zeus. She could have used that to protect Eve,but seems to
leave this "dagger" where it lay.
We have been had. Xena could have kept the Hindsblood Dagger for
protection,and we did not need the Dagger of Helios appearing again,or the
special power Xena had to kill gods as long as Eve lived.These were red
herrings in the story line.
Look how easy it has been to kill gods...they can be made mortal,as when
Ares' sword was stolen in Ten Little Warlords...he lost all his god-like
powers. In The Quill is Mightier,he and Aphrodite lost their powers,making
them mortal.Ares also gave up his godhood voluntarily in saving Gabby and
bringing Eve back to life in Motherhood,and was a mortal from then on until
You Are There,when he takes a bite of the Golden Apple Xena stole from Odin.
Note: Hope is half god(from Dahak) and half-human,from Gabby being her
mother.The Destroyer is Hope and Ares' "son" and is 3/4 god,and is killed
easily by Xena sticking her sword in its back.The Destroyer then kills Hope
with a long talon it has on its arm.Hope dies,not by a special device or
dagger,but with a pointy object. Xena could have used ANY dagger,or even a
rock.
I feel as if the show tried to be too cute with all these special
weapons,when we see for sure they were not needed to do the job of killing
they were supposed to do.
