Within- Chapter 3

Gabrielle was very confused when she was awakened a while later

Gabrielle was very confused when she was awakened a while later. “Xena?” She couldn’t have been asleep for long. “Xena?…Gods…you’re dreaming again…”

The young woman rolled to her knees, and knelt beside Xena. At least she was learning to recognize when the dreams were approaching.

Gabrielle leaned in and whispered in Xena’s ear. “Xena…Xena, Baby…please wake up…”

Xena’s head rocked back and forth a couple of times, as if she had heard what Gabrielle said, and was trying to resist her. “Don’t you touch me, you bitch,” she growled suddenly.

Gabrielle felt her breath catch in her throat. At first, she didn’t think she had heard Xena correctly.

“Xena…” she whispered a little louder, trying not to be too afraid. “Xena…please wake up.”

“Ooo…you’re just dying for me to fuck you, aren’t you, Little Girl?”

Gabrielle blinked and stared. The voice was Xena’s, of course, but it was a voice Gabrielle had never heard directed at her. It was the voice Xena used against her worst enemies; a deep guttural utterance that left no room for argument. It was a voice used to intimidate and frighten. It was working.

Terrified, Gabrielle wasn’t sure what she should do. Her first instinct told her to run, but there was no way in Tartarus she would ever be able to outrun Xena.

Not giving herself the chance to think anymore, Gabrielle acted on reflex and reached out and punched Xena in her shoulder as hard as she could. Then she was rolling over to her knees, and trying to scramble away as quickly as possible.

Behind her, she heard another sound of a bestial growl, and yelped in terror when she felt a vice-like grip clamping down on her ankle. Gabrielle suddenly had the feeling that this was going to be the end of her existence on Earth. Still, she gave a desperate kick with her leg, and suddenly…felt it released.

“Gabrielle?”

Xena’s voice was confused and unsure. Gabrielle turned back and saw Xena looking at her with huge mystified eyes. “Gabrielle, what’s going on?”

Recovering quickly, the bard turned back and sat down beside Xena on the bedroll. “I’m not sure,” she said finally. “But I know you were dreaming again.”

Xena let out a huge exhalation. “Uh huh.”

Gabrielle cocked her head at Xena. “And I think I have at least an idea about what you’re dreaming about now.”

Xena looked a little taken aback by that. “You do?”

“Yeah.”

“What do you think?”

Gabrielle spoke softly. “I think you are dreaming of your past…when you were…more aggressive.”

Xena nodded. “You’re partially right,” she replied. She got up and added some wood to the fire, before sitting down again. The she was staring into the growing flames. Gabrielle knew that meant that Xena had big things on her mind. Gazing at the flames of a campfire or candle always helped Xena relax.

Gabrielle sat up next to Xena, and pulled her sleeping fur tighter around her shoulders. Xena slipped an arm around the bard, holding her closer to her own body heat.

“You're right about my dreaming about the past” she said finally. “And yes, it has to do with my aggressive past. But more than that, more specifically, I’m dreaming about some of the things that happened in my sexual past.”

Gabrielle had been nodding right along with her, but then she pinkened slightly. “Oh,” she said finally.

“Yeah.” Xena could tell she was thinking along the right lines. “They’re things I haven’t been very proud of. Things I’ve tried to put behind me.”

Gabrielle was curious…of that, there was no doubt. But she spoke cautiously. “Are you dreaming about the actual events that happened…or about…uh…doing some of the things with different people?”

“The dreams have been playing the events of my past.” Xena gave Gabrielle a sidelong glance, curious as to where the question had come from. “What would make you ask that?”

“You uh…were sort of talking in your sleep,” came the answer.

“Great…” Xena intoned. “What was I saying?”

Gabrielle’s face definitely darkened in a blush now. “You uh…were making me feel like I was your…prey sort of. I didn’t even recognize your voice.”

Xena could remember exactly what the events of her dream were, and she remembered the look of the blonde in the dream. Her name had been Anna, and she was a pretty thing, but nowhere nearly as beautiful as Gabrielle. Of course, in Xena’s opinion, no one was.

Xena’s mind flew through the dream. “I didn’t hurt you, did I?’ she asked Gabrielle, suddenly alarmed.

“No, of course not,” Gabrielle replied, maybe a little too quickly. “You just…uh…didn’t sound like yourself.”

Xena got a fleeting image of the position she was in when she regained awareness. She had been on her stomach, reaching out for Gabrielle’s ankle. She wished she could remember more about it.

“Xena…”

“Hmmm…”

Gabrielle shrugged and took the plunge. “Have you ever had those kinds of dreams before?”

Xena seemed to consider that. “I won’t lie and say no,” she answered finally. “From time to time, I have. It’s hard to admit it, but some of…well…some of the …acts I participated in were rather pleasurable.”

Gabrielle’s imagination was suddenly in full motion. She had, of course, heard numerous stories about Xena’s sexual prowess, imagination, and at times, cruelty. After knowing Xena for a while, she had learned that almost all the stories she had heard about Xena’s battle skills had been true or at least steeped in very near the truth. This, of course, led to the thoughts that Xena’s sexual stories must be true as well.

Xena was shaking her head, as she sat up straight on her bedroll. “Gabrielle,” she said, her voice deeper than usual.

Broken from her reverie, Gabrielle blinked at her. “Yes, Xena?”

Xena reached a hand out and lightly touched Gabrielle’s arm. “Are you sure I didn’t hurt you?”

“I’m sure,” Gabrielle replied, looking evenly in Xena’s eyes.

For a long moment, Xena studied the bard. Then, satisfied Gabrielle was telling the truth, she released her hold on her arm.

“All right,” she said. “Sorry about waking you up. Why don’t you go back to sleep now?”

“Oh no, you don’t,” Gabrielle replied with an animated shake of her blonde hair. “You’re going to tell me what’s going on in those dreams of yours. You promised me you would.”

Xena nodded, looking defeated. She knew it wouldn’t be easy to escape Gabrielle’s clutches. She sighed heavily.

Not used to hearing that sound, Gabrielle didn’t disguise her stare at Xena. Finally, Xena spoke. “Like I told you before, I’m no stranger to these kinds of dreams. Usually, they come to me when we haven’t had that much time together, or sometimes, after a particularly hard battle. I wake up…and uh…well, before you I would take matters into my own hands and now…well…I wake you up and…fuck you like crazy.”

Gabrielle fought back a shiver at those words. She could easily think of more than one night she had been roused by a deep sleep by a very amorous Warrior Princess. Xena never hurt her during those encounters, but was very firm with her, telling Gabrielle exactly what she wanted, and getting it. Gabrielle never complained, because she was always emerged from these encounters well-satisfied.

“So that first night, when the dream came, it didn’t bother me too much,” Xena was continuing.

Gabrielle nodded. “What made you change your mind?”

Xena shrugged. “When I had a similar dream the second night, it still didn’t bother me a whole lot. It’s happened before.”

“And the third night?”

“THAT bothered me a little.” Gabrielle was a little taken aback by that admission, but she tried not to let on. Xena continued, “I mean, like I said, there is usually some underlying cause for the dreams. The last couple of weeks have been peaceful…no big battle and plenty of time with you.” She gave Gabrielle a wide grin, letting her know how much she was appreciated.

Gabrielle returned the smile. Yes, they had made love often the last couple of weeks, and it had been particularly nice.

“So then, I thought maybe the fact that it’s been so good might be the cause of the dreams,” Xena continued.

“What do you mean?” Gabrielle interjected.

The smile now on Xena’s lips was now strangely bittersweet. “Maybe, I don’t deserve to be so happy,” she said quietly.

“Oh, Xena…that’s not true!” Gabrielle exclaimed as understanding sunk in. “You work so hard doing the right thing, there’s no way you should continue to be punished for the deeds of your past!:

Reluctantly, Xena nodded.

“Unless…” Gabrielle continued, narrowing her eyes.

“Unless what?” Xena repeated, curious.

“Xena…do you think you could be punishing yourself?” Xena started to protest, but Gabrielle pushed forward. “You have always been the person hardest on yourself for what you used to be. Do you think maybe your mind is causing you to have the dreams as a guilty reflex?”

Xena considered it, then shook her head. “I don’t really think so,” she replied.

Gabrielle had been rather pleased with her theory. “Why not?”

Suddenly, Xena lunged forward and rested her upper body weight on her outstretched arm, startling Gabrielle with her sudden closeness. She gave the bard a spine-tingling seductive smile. “Because,” she said, “the dreams I’ve been having aren’t exactly what I’d refer to as…unpleasant.”

Gabrielle gulped and pinkened once again. She suddenly became aware of what Xena was saying, and she could see the sparkle of lust glowing in Xena’s eyes.

Xena enjoyed the flush of embarrassment in the bard. She changed gears with her smiles, and it became more relaxed. “Don’t worry, Gabrielle. You leave me more than satisfied. I don’t feel the need to…branch out with you like I did in the past.” Even as she said it, a thought struck her.

If Gabrielle noticed, she didn’t say anything. Instead, she smiled in return. “That’s a lovely thing to say. Thank you.”

“It’s true,” Xena replied.

“So that reason for dreaming is out. Can you think of any others?”

“Not really,” Xena replied. “I would imagine the reasons for the dreams will eventually be clear.”

Gabrielle nodded her agreement. “You’re probably right.” Now she was the one to lean forward. “Tell me what your dreams have been about, Xena.”

The dark-haired woman took yet another dramatic pause, and then began. “All right…I’ll tell you, but only if you make me a promise. You have to promise me that you’ll try to understand I was a different person in my past…and I behaved very differently.”

“I understand, and I promise.”
