Some more of Recon at LZ
Sally....later in 1968 judging by the wooden hootches. Lt. to rt.-Riley, "Mickey" (Supply Sgt.), ??, Austin, Fleming (squatting), ??, Cromer (sitting), Dove and Lt. Flaherty. I don't know how Flaherty got into the Army as he was only about 4'-2" tall.....the smallest person ever in the Army I believe....and his boots and fatiques had to be made specially for him. |
Arden Riggle and some of
his fellow 1st/502nd Troopers at LZ Sally when it was first being laid out (approx. March 1968). |
Arden and I agreed that this
photo should be entitled "Cluster-Fuck". I'm sure most of you bush rats will readily agree. |
There were always some
damned rivers, streams, canals, rice paddies or something quite wet and full of gigantic leaches to get across when in the bush. |
But the Troopers of the 101st
actually learned to walk on water thus avoiding those horrid leaches.
Really....this is Jerry "Rock"
Austin and in this he's ON a rock. |
Paul "Doc" Sudano said to
hell with that rickety bamboo bridge and managed to snag a small Vietnamese fishing boat to cross this leach infested waterway. "Yours truly" is one of those on the bridge....can you pick me out? |
There weren't very many ARVN or
RF-PF units that Recon would readily work with but these little beggars with the ARVN Panther Division were at least reliable enough to be there after the shit hit the fan. Lt. to rt. in the back row: Bradshaw, "Doc" Sudano, Anderson and Arnold. |
Some of Recon Plt. at LZ
Sally. Lt. to rt.-Sgt. Misola, Austin, Anderson, Arnold, Bradshaw, Riley, Cromer, Watts, Queen and Sgt. Ramirez. I believe we'd just come in from a rough one as I notice certain people missing. |
