‘Tis the season for decorating your home for the holidays, and it's s always a surprise to open dusty boxes of ornaments and decorations. The most treasured are the ones our daughter made in school or the ones we made as a family. In this season of giving, your friends and relatives will most enjoy a gift you've made yourself.
Last year, I surprised our families in Houston, Florida and Austin with a combined-family calendar. For each month, I indicated each family member's birthday and/or anniversary and holidays. That month's photos were of the family members who had special occasions to celebrate. I used personal computer software to create the calendar months, but you can also do this with a purchased 1999 calendar. I "cut and pasted" the photographs then color-copied and bound them with spirals at Kinkos. You can do these calendars with varying degrees of computer sophistication and scanners, or create something much simpler at a Eckerd's drug store Photo Department or your local Kwik Kopy. Visit them for ideas and ask if they have a senior discount or coupons to reduce your costs.
You'll find lots of arts and crafts supplies when you shop at Hancock Fabrics and JoAnn Fabrics and Crafts (formerly Cloth World ). Shop for fabrics, dried flowers, candles and more at these two chains and ask for a senior discount if you're at least 55 years young. Get 10% off regularly-priced merchandise every Wednesday at JoAnn stores. Hancock's senior discount is on the first Wednesday of the month, but they'll deduct 10% off the entire purchase price. Happy Holidays!
