A Response to: Atheism is the Way of Common Sense

Atheism at first glance does seem appealing. They seek to know their fellow man, and to help each other out. They believe in taking action for their causes. They seek to end war, poverty, and disease. They want all people to love one another. They seem like they have it all figured out...but do they? Take a closer look.

Atheists say that Christianity is all prayer and no action. According to the Atheists, we are too interested in seeing that everyone goes to Heaven after they die too help prevent anyone from dying. But if this is the case, why are so many hospitals, so many shelters, so many organizations that are out there to save lives, that are run by Christians and their churches? Christianity is indeed a very action oriented belief system. Yes, we do pray for things...then we do what needs to be done. If a Christian is found that does nothing to act on behalf of those in need, then that Christian is not following the Biblical mandate to help others. If the Atheists were to truly look at what we are doing, they would see we are every bit as active in helping "our fellow man" as any group, in fact, probably more active.

Atheists say that our goal is to die, in order to escape this world. Again, they need to see things from a different point of view. Our goal is not to die. Christ did not say to us, "I come to end your life, so that you can come be with me". No, he said, "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." Our goal is not to die. We do look forward to Heaven, but our goal is to live an abundant life, serving God and seeing our efforts come to fruition. No Christian makes it their goal to die. If we did, Christianity would have died out long ago as a suicide cult. We strive to live a full life in Christ.

Atheists talk of morality, love, and truth, but have no standard to measure these things by. Without a perfect being-a God, who sets the standards of what is moral, and honest? By what standard do we measure love? We obviously get these standards from somewhere. But the Atheists deny the existence of the One who is the standard.

Above all, I see no hope in the Atheists view. In their mind, we are not prize creations of a loving God; we are the result of some cosmic "accident". We are the result of some fish that decided it wanted to try to live on land, and succeeded. In their minds, humans are the result of some coincidence. And also in their mind, this life is it. You either live a good life, or you do not. There is no afterlife. There is no place of ultimate joy, or ultimate despair. If you believe in God, you work your life away for a God that does not exist, trying to get someplace that is only in your imagination. When a person dies, their life is over. There is no reward for the good, no punishment for the wicked. In a sense, does this not make life seem pointless? If there is nothing to look forward to after this life, why do we waste our time, only to die, never to receive anything for our life's work? As Christians, we are to work to further the kingdom of God, without expecting a reward. In my opinion, the growth of God's kingdom is a reward in itself, but the Atheists are trying to deny us that reward by saying that God's kingdom does not exist because God does not exist. They then deny us our heavenly rewards. They are the ones that have no hope. They strive to make life better and instead make life out to be one long struggle that ends in death--all earthly, mortal rewards now worthless, and no Heavenly, eternal rewards to receive.
