Thai Government Tells U.S to Sell Jets

BANGKOK (Reuters) Thailand told the United States again yesterday it can not pay for a $ 392 million order for eight F/A-18 Hornet jet fighters and wants a quick resale to other buyers.

Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai reiterated the Thai position at a meeting with the commander of the U.S Seventh Fleet, Admiral Joseph W. Prueher, Thai military officials said.

Deputy defense minister Gen Watanachai Wuthisiri told reporters the prime minister again urged Prueher to continue searching for potential buyers.

Cash-strapped Thailand signed the deal two years ago to buy the eight fighters from McDonell Douglas for delivery in October 2000, but it has since run into its worst economic crisis in decades.
