"Citizens Of San Antonio" group asks
U.S. Attorney General to review Stone Oak annexation
for apparent Voting Rights Act violation
PRESS CONFERENCE
City Hall front steps
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS -- A local San Antonio group, "Citizens Of San Antonio," (C.O.S.A.) is seeking a U.S. Attorney General review of the recent annexation of Stone Oak subdivision of Northern Bexar County, by an approval vote of San Antonio council members: Robert Marbut, Roger Flores, Tim Baanwolf, Debra Guerrero, Jeff Webster, Joe Menendez, and by Mayor Howard Peak.
Spokesman, Nazirite Perez, states "the Stone Oak subdivision's racial makeup of 80% anglo 'white' voters.. may violate the Voting Rights Act of the United States. The act allows for the U.S. Attorney General to initiate legal action if necessary in order to prevent or correct the apparent violations. The high percentage of anglo 'white' voters will dilute the racial minority vote within the City of San Antonio. For example, this may skew future election outcomes for the office of Mayor since the vote is cast at-large throughout the city."
"A similar annexation situation occurred in Austin and they are currently under federal review for Voting Rights Act violation."
"Past annexations have been fairly balanced in racial make-up but this last annexation, of Stone Oak, throws everything off balance and we believe such will definitely impact future elections; apparently in violation of the Voting Rights Act. We therefore seek U.S. Attorney General enforcement; to include a permanent injunction against the Stone Oak annexation if necessary, concludes Perez.
