11/18/97

It's all Ellen right now. Libby went to bed and it's kind of late, but I wanted to say a few things. To be honest, folks, I don't know how many that would be, but if you didn't feel like reading it, then you wouldn't be here in the first place. I'm going to speak a bit about how all this stuff between Libby and the 97's and I got started. Ready for a slightly long story? Ready or not, here it comes.

My mom is shopping in Waterloo records one sticky July day, and she decides to listen to what's on the "Waterloo top bands" stand. It happened to be the Old 97s. Yeah, she liked the music a lot, but she wasn't for sure ifshe wanted to lay down the money and buy it. She keeps listening. The lyrics "in a hotel room that costs as much as my apartment" reach her ears and she's hooked. It's clever. It's true. You know that if you've ever stayed in a hotel in NYC. Four dollar signs on that one. $$$$ She buys it and brings it home. I listen to it and I immediately fall in love. What I didn't know was that these were all young guys. They sounded to me like men Ed Hammel's age. Nothing against Ed. He's just a tad older. I thought Murry was especially old. That was okay, though, because West TX Teardrops was my favorite song.

It just happened that my birthday was coming up on the 31st, and the Old 97's were in town the next day. I wonder what I wanted to do for my birthday. Neither of my sisters were too sure about them at this point. Actually, one knew she wanted to go to the concert, but wasn't sure if she liked them, the other couldn't stand them and didn't do concerts anyways. I'm not mentioning any names. So I take a couple of my best friends and we're off. I loved the music in the first place. But this was the point when I fell for the band. That's when the other sister got pumped about them as well.
