Mythologies is the solo album by Rhett Miller when he was 18 years old, 1989. Back in those days, the young Mr. Miller was inspired by the great David Bowie, and it shows. You'd hardly recognize the voice singing, even if you are the most devoted of Old 97s fans, because, in place of that endearing Deep in the Heart of Texas twang, is an almost British accent. This does not take away from the record, only adds to the sweet and 70s-reminicent tone.
The folky songs sound like they are greatly influenced by the young Arlo Guthrie. The tone is often either wistful or angry, a little suprising (but it really shouldn't be) coming from a teenager. Many of the lyrics are vauge and imagistic.
