Roy Cohn- Jeff
Welch- Amber
McCarthy- Chris
Narrator- the 13th day of the hearings: Welch
was questioning Roy Cohn with sarcasm that was almost abusive.
Welch- Mr. Cohn, when you find the Communist in
our government. Will you please try to get them out before
sundown, or as soon as possible? When you learn of one form now
on, Mr. Cohn, I beg you, will you tell somebody quick?
Narrator- Instead of making Cohn mad, it made
McCarthy mad.
McCarthy- I have hesitated about bringing that
up, but I have been rather bored with your phony requests to Mr.
Cohn here that he personally get every Communist out of
government before sundown. Therefore we will give you the
information about the young man in your own organization.
Narrator- This made McCarthy look bad because
Welch and Cohn made an agreement not to talk about it and
McCarthy knew it, but was so mad that he didn't care. With this
outburst, Welch replied:
Welch- Until this moment, Senator, I think I
never really gauged your cruelty or recklessness. So, Senator, I
asked him to go back to Boston. Little did I dream you could be
so reckless and so cruel as to do a injury to that lad... I fear
he shall always bear a scar needlessly inflicted by you. If it
were in my power to forgive you for your reckless cruelty, I
would do so. I think that I am a gentle man, but your forgiveness
will have to come from someone other than me.
Narrator- Welch to Cohn
Welch- I'm sorry for this Mr. Cohn
Narrator- Welch to McCarthy
Welch- Mr. McCarthy, I will not discuss this
with you further... If there is a God in Heaven, it will do
neither you nor your cause any good.
Narrator- After this, the trial went on for a
couple more days until June 17At the beginning of the trial more
than 50% of America was behind him, at the end there was only 34%
left.
