MUSTER ROLL of Captain Early Baker Company
C First Reg’t Ga Reserves , Army of the Confederate States, Colonel J.
H. Fannin , from the 27th day of April 1864 , when mustered into the service
of the Confederate States.
Note: This muster roll contains the
original entries of the men who enlisted in the First Georgia Reserves,
Company C. It includes the number (order in which their names were
written), name, rank, enlistment data of when, where, and by whom, time
period of enlistment (all were for the duration of the War), age, height
in terms of feet & inches, complexion, color of eyes, and color of
hair, occupation, and place of residence at the time of enlistment.
The first four officers were not so noted and neither were the men who
comprised the bottom ¼ of the list. Although it was noted
on this original muster roll that all privates should be listed in alphabetical
order, not all were done so, and in order to keep this Muster Roll authentic,
I’ve listed them according to the original document.
The soldiers who made up Company C of the
1st Georgia Reserves were from the known counties of Meriwether (2), Troup
(14), Clark (2), Franklin (1), DeKalb (1), Baldwin (1), Jasper (3), Walton
(1), Jackson (3), Hancock (1), Clayton? (1), Morgan (1), Oglethorpe (2),
Green (4), Wilkinson (1), Cherokee (2), Madison (1) as well as 3 listed
from Robertson (?) County, NC and 1 from the Lawrence District? SC.
(**I am well aware that some of these are spelled differently at the present
time but have spelled them as they were on the original document.**)
Company C documents 12 men who are listed as students, 2 as
clerks, 29 farmers, 3 mechanics and 1 dentist.
All transcriptions contain errors to some
degree due to the poor quality of the microfilm or dark spots that have
occurred with age, or white spots that make the writing illegible.
I have tried to reconstruct this original muster roll as accurately as
is humanly possible. Even so, I cannot guarantee 100% accuracy.
I hope it will be of some small benefit to you in your research on your
ancestors who served during the Civil War.
