2nd Lt. Robert Henry Lockhart

  Robert Henry Lockhart born in Hancock County, Georgia, May 28, 1838 to Jesse and Mary Puryear Lockhart. He died at Vance, Texas on Nov 20, 1920. He married Julia Estelle Adams at Sparta, Ga on Sept 22, 1857. They had one child, Mary Willie, born at Shorter, Alabama on Sept. 4, 1858. Both mother and child died. He moved with his sister Rebecca and her husband Charley Provost to Polk County, Texas in 1859 and established a plantation between Moscow and Leggett. He then married Sarah Elizabeth Jones on March 3, 1861 in Polk County. She was born in White County, Arkansas on Aug 31, 1843. They had seven children. John Hodges, Jesse Puryear, Walter Jones (my grandfather), Mary Lucy, Julia Elizabeth, Robert Henry, Jr., and Rebecca Clementine.

He was discharged as a 2nd Lt. in 1865 from the 14th Texas Infantry, C.S.A. An 1870 census for Polk County shows an R.H. Lockhart as a school teacher in Livingston, Texas with taxes paid on $1500.00 worth of property. He moved the family to Nueces County, Texas sometime in 1872. They made the move with Archie and Clementine Clark. The R. H. Lockhart family moved from Vernon, Texas to Vance, Texas in 1909.
