OMAHA - The bull's eye is back on the bulls.
One year after advancing to the third round of the playoffs in Class 3A, the Paul Pewitt Brahmas return to the 2A ranks for the 1998 season.
The Brahmas arrive with a pair of 1,000-yard rushers, a dangerous quarterback, two of the top defensive linemen in the area and a preseason No. 1 ranking.
The scenario is nothing new for veteran head coach Ronald Bickham. ''The funny thing is we didn't get a lot of respect in 3A even though we were upsetting a lot of people and going to the playoffs.
Now we drop to 2A, and everyone goes overboard and ranks us No. 1,'' Bickham said. ''They did the same thing four years ago. You just take it as an honor and go on.
You still tell the kids they have to live up to the rankings, and it's not easy since we are going to go out there every Friday night with a bull's eye on us.''
Paul Pewitt is loaded on offense, returning double-threat Jimmy Wilkerson (6-4, 215) at quarterback and Kenny Boyd (6-1, 175) and Ben Johnson (5-9, 175) at tailback.
Wilkerson was the sophomore of the year in the district last season after rushing for 500 yards and adding another 579 through the air.
Boyd and Johnson were both first team all-district picks, Boyd after stepping off 1,385 yards and Johnson adding 1,001 on the ground. ''Wilkerson played 13 games for us last year, but he is still developing,'' Bickham said. ''He's a great athlete. His passing isn't as accurate as we would like to see, but I think that will come.
Johnson is a strong kid with great balance and great movement. Boyd is the same way. He wasn't a starter until a kid broke his leg in the first game, but Kenny stepped in, did the job and got better each week.''
Hercules Tarver (6-3, 210) and James Gilmore (6-1, 175) are the tight ends, and David Bryson (5-11, 175), Brad Culpepper (6-0, 180) and Andy Townsend (6-0, 185) will anchor the offensive line.
The defense is strong up front with tackles Melvin McGary (6-3, 370) and Romar Chism (6-3, 205). McGary was a first-team all-district pick after recording 121 tackles, and Chism led the Brahmas with 133 stops. ''Romar Chism is special,'' Bickham said. ''Anytime you have a kid his size who can chase down most any back from behind, you have something special.''
Tramond Hawkins (5-10, 220), Delrick Johnson (6-4, 210) and Anthony Stanley (5-11, 220) will also see playing time up front.
Wilkerson and Tarver are the linebackers, with Boyd, Johnson, Michael Kelly (5-8, 140), Benny Whitstone (5-5, 145), Jeremy Mines (5-10, 160) and Kenny Cooper (5-11, 155) battling for playing time in the defensive backfield.
The Brahmas will open the season at Arp on Sept. 4. The district opener is set for Oct. 9 at home against Prairiland.
