BRAHMAS STAY #1 IN 2AA POLL

From staff of Longview Journal and wire reports

Some things changed and some things remained the same after the first full weekend of high school football for East Texas teams.

The constant was Paul Pewitt, which like the other four top-ranked teams in their respective classes, remained at No. 1 in Class 2A in The Associated Press high school poll released Monday. Jacksonville, Atlanta, Elysian Fields and Tenaha were not as fortunate, though, in retaining their respective rankings as the Brahmas, which opened with a convincing 48-0 victory over Arp.

Jacksonville, ranked third in Class 4A, Elysian Fields, fourth in Class 2A, and Tenaha, sixth in Class A, suffered losses and fell from the ranks of the Top 10.

Atlanta, tied for seventh a week ago with Iowa Park, won but dropped to No. 8 in Class 3A.

In Class 4A, Terrell, which upset Jacksonville 31-0, is now ranked ninth, and Burkeville joined the Class A rankings at No. 9 after its 36-14 decision over former No. 6 Tenaha.

The panel of 20 sports writers and broadcasters also gave Southlake Carroll (4A), Giddings (3A), Goldthwaite (2A) and Muenster (A) their first appearances in the Top 10.

Midland Lee held onto its No. 1 ranking in 5A with a season-opening 49-7 win over El Paso Coronado, while Duncanville, Lewisville, Austin Westlake and Copperas Cove all won to retain their positions in the top five.

In 4A, Stephenville retained its stranglehold on No. 1 with a 28-7 win over Fort Worth Richland, and La Marque stayed put at No. 2 by escaping Galveston Ball with a 17-14 win. Texas City, New Braunfels Canyon and Greenville all moved a bit closer to the top because of losses by Jacksonville and Grapevine.

Class 3A No. 1 Sealy beat 2A No. 6 Brookshire-Royal, 39-7, to stay ahead of Cuero, Aledo, Royse City and Monahans.

Pewitt, Mart and Celina stayed on top in Class 2A, while Brookshire-Royal fell to No. 9.

For the third straight week, Wheeler, Bartlett, Aspermont, Detroit and Dawson top the Class A rankings.

PEWITT vs CLARKSVILLE

Paul Pewitt 57, Clarksville 8

CLARKSVILLE, Texas-Jimmy Wilkerson and Kenny Boyd combined for 308 yards and six touchdowns here Friday as top-ranked Paul Pewitt rolled past Clarksville, 57-8.

Boyd gained 181 yards on 12 carries and scored on runs of 4, 5 and 79 yards, while Wilkerson gained 127 yards on just eight carries with scoring runs of 1, 11 and 92 yards.

Wilkerson also passed for a score, 13 yards to Hercules Tarver and Mitch Gibson tallied on a 10-yard run for the Brahmas (2-0).

Paul Pewitt also had a safety in the game.

Clarksville became the first team to score on the Brahma defense when Brandon Watkins connected with Jay Edwards on a 44-yard pass play in the third quarter.

Paul Pewitt had 435 yards rushing in the game and held Clarksville to a minus 26 yards on the ground, forcing the Tigers (0-2) into four turnovers.

HOOKS vs PEWITT

Paul Pewitt builds big lead, holdsoff Hooks for 21-14 win

By BOB KRAYL/Special to the Gazette

OMAHA-NAPLES, Texas-Paul Pewitt was well on its way to a convincing victory over Hooks here Friday night, but the Hornets had other ideas.

Leading 21-0, Paul Pewitt was threatening to score another touchdown midway in the third quarter, but Hooks came up with a big defensive play and the Brahmas barely hung on for a 21-14 victory.

After Paul Pewitt quarterback Jimmy Wilkerson gained 14 yards to the Hornets' 5-yard line, Hooks defensive back Tyrell Wyse stole the ball from Wilkerson and streaked 95 yards for the touchdown to close the deficit to 21-6.

"That hurt us the most." said Paul Pewitt coach Ronnie Bickham of the strip by Wyse, "Now they're back in the game and later we lose our quarterback." "I knew they would be tough and I was pleased with our effort." Bickham added, "We played with a lot of intensity."

Hooks drew within a touchdown, 21-14, with 3:45 remaining, but a last-minute drive ended with an interception by Kris Munn at the Brahmas' 12. It was Munn's second interception of the game.

"I was real happy to see that our kids stayed in there." said Hooks' coach Glenn Goen. "Some teams would have given up, falling behind by three touchdowns to a good team."

Brahmas moved 76 yards in seven plays for a touchdown on their second possession. Kenny Boyd burst up the middle for the final 44 yards and a 7-0 lead.

Desmond Jones put the Brahmas in scoring position with a 40-yard punt return to the Hornets' 20-yard line midway in the second quarter. On the next play, Wilkerson, a 6-4, 230-pound senior, broke a few tackles at the line of scrimmage and went in for the score and a 13-0 lead.

Another long run put Paul Pewitt in scoring position again a few minutes later. Boyd broke on a 59-yard scamper before being brought down from behind by Justin Wright at the 6-yard line. Wilkerson scored on the next play and then ran for the two-point conversion to make it 21-0 at halftime.

Hooks quarterback Brent Sims led his team into Paul Pewitt territory three times in the first half, completing 15 of 24 passes for 117 yards. The last drive ended at the Paul Pewitt 19-yard line before time ran out.

After Wyse's big play and touchdown, Hooks got another break when a bad snap on a punt attempt gave the Hornets possession at the Brahmas' 12-yard line.

On fourth down, Sims passed to Wright from five yards out for the score. Sims then hit Michael Dale Henry for the two-point conversion, closing the margin to 21-14.

Boyd led all rushers with 188 yards on 15 carries, while Wilkerson chipped in with 137 yards on 13 attempts.

Wilkerson left the game early in the fourth quarter with a pulled hamstring.

Sims finished with 201 yards passing, completing 22 of 35 attempts. He had three intercepted.

PEWITT vs MOUNT VERNON

From the Texarkana Gazette

Paul Pewitt 14 Mount Vernon 0

MOUNT VERNON, Texas-With star quarterback Jimmy Wilkerson hobbled,

Paul Pewitt-Texas' No. 1 2A-team still had too much for 3A Mount Vernon here Friday night.

Too much defense and too much tailback Kenny Boyd, that is. Boyd more than tripled Mount Vernon's offensive output as he pounded out 167 yards on the ground.

Half of that came on the Brahmas' first play from scrimmage, an 87-yard blast at the 8:16 mark of the first period. Boyd closed out the scoring with a 33-yard run midway through the third period.

In the meantime, Paul Pewitt shut down the Tigers, holding them to just three first downs and 54 yards

Pewitt, the defending 2A champ, moved to 4-0. Mount Vernon fell to 0-4.

PEWITT vs MOUNT VERNON

From the Longview Journal

Paul Pewitt 14 Mount Vernon 0

MOUNT VERNON ? For the first time in five years, the Paul Pewitt Brahmas defeated the Mount Vernon Tigers, using a stingy defense to score a 14-0 shutout.

The Brahmas defense held Mount Vernon to just 54 total yards and three first downs in the contest.

The scoring started with a Kenny Boyd 87-yard touchdown run with 8:16 left in the first quarter. Tramond Hawkins added the extra point to bring the score to 7-0.

The action resumed in the third period, again with Boyd putting the ball in the end zone, this time from 33 yards out. Hawkins tacked on the PAT for the final score of the game.

Boyd ended the night with 167 yards on 21 carries and the only two scores of the game. Paul Pewitt also completed 2 of 7 passes for 20 yards.

The Brahmas up their record to 4-0, while Mount Vernon falls to 0-4.

Brahmas, Purple Tigers set to battle Friday night
By BOB RUNYON
Tribune Correspondent

OMAHA-NAPLES - For all their success, Paul Pewitt has a tough time of winning when it comes to playing Mount Vernon.

The top-ranked Brahmas have had trouble beating the Purple Tigers in the past and will try to end that skid Friday. Mount Vernon has dominated the Brahmas to the tune of five straight victories.

Paul Pewitt has not beaten the Purple Tigers since a 41-25 win in 1993 by a team that finished the year in the Class 2A state finals.

Game time is 7:30 on the Tigers' home turf. The game also marks homecoming for the Purple Tigers.

The key to the Mount Vernon streak may lie in head coach Willie Roten's use of a couple of trick plays and a tough, determined and disciplined defense that has garnered wins of 24-20, 28-12, 22-6, 15-12 and 20-14 in those five seasons.

By the way, the meeting in 1992 ended in a 20-20 tie after the Purple Tigers mounted a last minute comeback to snatch a moral victory from the jaws of defeat.

The Bulls have gotten off to a 3-0 start in 1999 after wins over Arp (48-0), Clarksville (57-8) and Hooks (21-14).

The Purple Tigers are 0-3 after losses to White Oak (34-6), Hooks (27-7) and New Boston (16-15).

Could be that Mount Vernon has Paul Pewitt exactly where it wants it to be.

But there is a new determination in Omaha-Naples after the five-year drought. A new attitude pervades the Bulls' dressing room, one of excitement and loquacious confidence as opposed to past teams who have been quiet and businesslike in their pursuit of football happiness.

Not in the Pewitt starting lineup this week is senior quarterback Jimmy Wilkerson, a key loss to the Brahmas.

Wilkerson gained 93 yards against Arp, 127 against Clarksville and 149 in the showdown with Hooks, where he sustained a hamstring injury. The jury is still out on when the all-state candidate will be back.

So, the focus will be on the run game of senior Kenny Boyd, who has put together back-to-back 180-yard plus performances, and sophomore Desmond Jones, who will have to step up his play to make up for Wilkerson's loss. Jones, however, has shown flashes of brilliance as a punt returner.

Senior Stephen Sperry will take the helm against Mount Vernon. Playing in Wilkerson's shadow all of his high school career, Sperry has a good arm and plenty of smarts to play the position. He has also had a week of snaps to get ready for the Purple Tigers. In the event that Sperry can't go, junior Kris Munn, a defensive standout against Hooks with two interceptions, will be pushed into the fray.

Running backs Mitch Gibson, O.J. Madlock, Benny Whetstone, Delwynn Johnson and Terrance Shepherd are expected to get some tries at the Mount Vernon defense, too.

Pewitt's defense, led by the likes of senior tackle Delwynn Johnson (6-4, 230), noseguard Anthony Stanley (5-11, 220), tackle Andy Townsend, defensive ends James Gilmore and Buck Cobbins and linebacker Hercules Tarver, will be responsible for holding back the Purple Tigers so far anemic offense.

Mount Vernon's offense is guided by quarterback Joseph Kastner with running backs Bryan White and Chuck Johnson some of the top weapons.

Landon Bell is one of the top leaders for the Purple Tigers on defense.

Brahmas End Losing Skid Against Purple Tigers

By BOB RUNYON

Tribune Correspondent

MOUNT VERNON -- Well, it's over. Mount Vernon's five-game winning streak against Paul Pewitt's Brahmas came to a screeching halt, 14-0, here Friday night as the Battlin' Bulls defense limited the home team to just three first downs and 26 yards rushing. Mount Vernon came up with even less through the air, completing three of 10 for 26 yards.

On the other hand, senior Kenny Boyd ran for 167 of the Bulls' 281 yards on 21 carries and scored two touchdowns. Boyd broke Pewitt's first play of the game for an 87-yard touchdown and an early 7-0 lead after Tramond Hawkins made the PAT. Paul Pewitt, ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, improved to 4-0 on the year, while Mount Vernon is winless in four tries.

But the story inside the story was the play of both defenses. Pewitt was nearly immovable thanks to the efforts of tackles Delwynn Johnson, Andy Townsend and Otis Cobbins, nosdeguard Anthony Stanley and ends James Gilmore and Jarome Cobbins.

Linebacker Hercules Tarver stepped up and played one of the best games of his career as he took much of the heat off the Brahmas secondary as he took up the slack for fellow senior Jimmy Wilkerson, who missed the game because of a ham-string injury.

Defensive backs Kedrick Wright, Desmond Jones, Stephen Sperry and Kris Munn also went the extra mile in defending against Mount Vernon's long pass attempts.

The game was not without inspired play by the swarming Mount Vernon defense. Playing before a homecoming crowd, the Purple Tigers spotted the Bulls the early 7-0 advantage but made it hold up until halftime and held the Pewitt defense to just three first-half first downs.

Led by linebackers Brian McAllister and Martin McCormick coupled with good line play from Clay Herrmann, Derek Watson and Paul Edge and support from secondary members Bryan White and Chuck Johnson, the Purple Tigers made things tough for Pewitt's runners after the initial TD.

After his 87-yard TD, Boyd carried the next six times for just 10 yards and passed the 100-yard mark on his eighth carry. Sophomore back Desmond Jones found the going tough, and starting quarterback Sperry found himself surrounded by the purple jerseys throughout the half.

Jones had 35 yards on 12 carries, while Delwynn Johnson had 19 yards on three totes as a fullback.

As the second half began, Bulls head coach Ronnie Bickham went to junior quarterback Kris Munn to spark the Pewitt offense. The lanky underclassman started Pewitt at the 16 and got three yards to the first down, then Boyd ran for eight yards. After no gain on third down, Johnson was good for four yards and a first down at the 31.

Jones gain a yard, then was stuffed for a loss by White and company. On third down, Munn passed to Boyd out of the backfield for 11 yards and another first. Jones garnered 11 yards and then bulled his way for another six to the Mount Vernon 33. At that point, Boyd got on his horse again and outran the Purple Tigers to the end zone.

After Hawkins toed the PAT, Pewitt had the lead at 14-0.

The drive took more than six minutes off the third quarter clock, and was followed by another Munn-led effort that killed another four minutes to end the quarter.

With six minutes to go in the game, Townsend punctuated the Bulls dominance of the game when he recovered a fumbled punt by White.

The Bulls recovered two Mount Vernon fumbles, while the Purple Tigers had two takeaways on an interception and fumble recovery.

Mount Vernon was its usual disciplined self, losing just 25 yards on three penalties.

Punter Aaron Little punted seven times for a 36-yard average, including a 61-yarder.

Tarver, filling in for Wilkerson as the Bulls punter, had a 30-yard average on four tires.

Pewitt hosts Linden-Kildare next week and Mount Vernon visits North Lamar. Linden-Kildare beat North Lamar in double overtime, 26-20, Friday night.

Paul Pewitt's offense can put up points in bunches. There's no doubt about that in my book. They're averaging 35 points a game and have the ability to score in just a matter of seconds.

However, what impresses me most about the Brahmas is their defense. If they continue to play like they did Friday night and have in the early part of the season, another state championship is definitely a realistic possibility.

After watching the Brahmas blank Mount Vernon, 14-0, Friday night, I came away very impressed by the Pewitt defense which posted a shutout despite having all-state linebacker Jimmy Wilkerson on the sidelines due to an injury. The Brahmas held the Purple Tigers to less than 60 yards of offense and did it with an aggressive defense that pursued the ball well.

Pewitt's defensive pursuit left Mount Vernon little room to run and when the Purple Tigers went to the air the Brahmas secondary played well against the pass.

That's usually been the case in the early part of the season as opponents are finding out it's tough to score against the Brahmas. Paul Pewitt has allowed just 22 points or an average of 5.5 per game this season.

Most of those points were by Class 3A power Hooks which scored 14 points and gave the Brahmas their biggest challenge of the season in a 21-14 contest.

Don't be surprised by the closeness of the score with Mount Vernon. Even though the Purple Tigers are winless and the Brahmas undefeated, Mount Vernon always plays Pewitt tough. Five straight wins before this season are evidence of that.

Pewitt's defense has one more big challenge left before starting District 14-2A play as they face Linden-Kildare next week.

I don't see any team in 14-2A giving the Brahmas much of a challenge. Cooper is decent but not good enough to beat Paul Pewitt. Few teams in Class 3A in East Texas could beat the Brahmas the way they are playing defense.

The playoffs will pose some challenge for the Brahmas. Their pass defense must step up their play to help compliment the Brahmas tough run defense.

If the defense continues to get better and the offense keeps rolling, the Brahmas could proclaim themselves two-time state champion by the season ends.

Defense does win championships. And right now the Brahmas have a defense that can do just that.
