From the Texarkana Gazette

Paul Pewitt 52 Prairiland 0

PATTONVILLE, Texas-Even on the road, Texas' top-ranked, defending 2A champions looked the part.

The Paul Pewitt Brahmas dashed to a 40-0 halftime lead and jogged in with a 52-0 whitewash of Prairiland in the District 14-2A opener for both squads Friday night.

It took the Brahmas less than two minutes to get on the boards. Jarome Cobbins pounced on a Patriots fumble in the endzone to put Pewitt ahead to stay.

Kenny Boyd quickly added three touchdowns on runs of 32, 97 and 7 yards. Boyd had a short night, just six carries, but that was enough for 158 yards and the three TDs.

Delwynn Johnson added 102 yards and two scores on just five carries, while Desmond Jones chipped in 88 yards and a score in his five carries. Mitch Gibson added a 7-yard TD run to the onslaught.

Paul Pewitt is 6-0 (1-0), while

Prairiland dropped to 1-5 (0-1).

Brahmas Rout Chisum in Homecoming Game

By BOB RUNYON

Tribune Correspondent

OMAHA-NAPLES -- In Saudia Arabia and other countries around this old world of ours, lambs are led to slaughter in events called public executions. In Texas, they are called homecoming football games.

Senior Kenny Boyd scored three touchdowns and sophomore Desmond Jones added two, while five other Brahmas scored in various ways as top-ranked Paul Pewitt wiped out homecoming opponent Chisum, 63-0.

Pewitt's win gives the Bulls a perfect record after seven games, and a 2-0 showing in District 14-2A. The Mustangs fell to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in league play.

The victory sets up a 14-2A showdown between the Bulls and Cooper, a 55-0 winner over Rivercrest. Cooper is averaging 44.5 points in two district games, while Pewitt has set a 57.5 points-per-game standard. Both have yet to be scored upon by a district opponent. Something will have to give.

With outstanding freshman Darius Ferguson on the sidelines with a neck injury and other key players out, the Mustangs had little to offer Class 2A's top ranked football team. By the end of the first quarter, Pewitt led 21-0. They raced to a 43-0 advantage by halftime. That was followed by a 13-point fourth quarter and a seven-point final period.

It was same-old, same-old for the Brahmas defense, which is the top ranked in Northeast Texas. The Mustangs managed just 17 yards rushing on 39 tries, and had none through the air. Chisum had five first downs in the contest, two of which came as a result of Pewitt penalties.

Again, tackle Otis Cobbins had a stellar outing for the Bulls, as did linebacker Hercules Tarver and senior linebacker Jimmy Wilkerson, who returned to full-time duty after a hamstring injury sidelined him for almost a month.

There was plenty of other support on the defensive side for Pewitt, especially from junior noseguard Anthony Stanley, linebacker Andy Townsend, lineman Tramond Hawkins, tackle Delwynn Johnson and defensive backs Kris Munn, Jones, Stephen Sperry and Boyd.

Other underclassmen contributed to the rout as Terrance Shepard returned an interception 90 yards for a TD in the second quarter.

Senior James Gilmore, another mainstay in the Pewitt defense, tackled Chisum punter John McDonald in the end zone for a second-quarter safety. Stanley also had a fumble recovery for Pewitt.

In the first quarter, Boyd scored three times, but got credit for just one TD because of mental lapses by the Bulls that got the runs called back. But with 9:00 on the first-quarter clock, Boyd put his weave-and-bob style into play and pushed the ball to the Chisum 16. On the next play, Wilkerson was good for 11, then Delwynn Johnson bulled into the end zone from four yards out for the game's initial score.

Tramond Hawkins added the PAT to make it 7-0 with 8:08 left in the first quarter. Hawkins, after a lapse last week that caused five missed PATs, stepped up his play this week and made seven of nine tries. His kickoffs were also devastating to the Mustangs as three sailed into the end zone for touchbacks.

With 5:47 to go in the first quarter, Boyd got his first TD from 25 yards out, then Jones scored on runs of 29 and 15 yards to make it 27-0 with 11:26 left in the half.

Before the halftime break, Pewitt scored three times. Shepard returned an interception, Gilmore had a safety and Boyd scored on a 13-yard run.

In the third quarter, Boyd scored on a 39-yard run, then O.J. Madlock added a 31-yard jaunt for a touchdown to make it 56-0.

The final score came when Bennie Whetstone raced in from 11 yards out.

Wilkerson completed three of five passes for 36 yards, while Munn completed his only pass attempt for 34 yards.

Tarver caught two passes for 55 yards, while Ryan Forrest had one reception for 21 and Kedrick Wright hauled in one pass for 10 yards.

Boyd had 118 yards on just six carries, while Jones had 73 yards. Mitch Gibson added 47, Whetstone 33, Kenny Webster 22, Wilkerson 13 and Johnson six.

In other district action, Honey Grove won 38-7 over Prairiland.

Notes: This is arguably the most important game to date in District 14-2A this season because it will hand on team what will most likely be its only loss in district play. In its last seven district games, dating back to the 1998 district opener, a 69-0 win against Prairiland, Pewitt has outscored its opponents 393-27. Cooper scored 14 of those points last season in a bitter defeat. But what's past is past, said Cooper head coach Joey Florence. "We're not out to prove anything," said Florence. "These are the games you like to play in and coach in." While Cooper has TB Jason Demidio, who is vying for the Red River Valley rushing and scoring titles, FB Billie Mayberry and WB Vernard Wilkerson cranked up this season, Pewitt is allowing just under 17 rushing yards per game to its opponents.

"I don't know if this will be an offensive or defensive battle," said Pewitt head coach Ronnie Bickham. "But it's a great matchup."

From the Longview Journal

Brahmas bullish about winning district, state

By Jack Stallard

OMAHA - Ronald Bickham's expression alternated between a huge smile and a sympathetic grimace Tuesday as he watched tailback after tailback take the ball from the quarterback and then disappear in the clutches of 11 fired up defensive players.

After each snap of the football, what followed resembled a feeding frenzy with the defense playing the role of blood thirsty sharks and the person with the ball quickly being reduced to bait.

The No. 1 ranked Paul Pewitt Brahmas are preparing for a key District 14-2A skirmish at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Cooper. Both teams are unbeaten on the season (7-0) and in district play (2-0), and the winner will likely go on to earn the district championship.

That trophy currently resides at Paul Pewitt High School, and the Brahmas aren't ready to part with it just yet.

We're undefeated, and they are undefeated. Everyone is pumped up for this one, Brahma record-setting tailback Kenny Boyd said.

Bickham said the atmosphere on the practice field this week has been different than in the previous workouts leading up to district games with Prairiland and Paris Chisum, teams that were outscored by a combined 115-0 by the Bulls.

We opened district with Prairiland and Paris Chisum. I don't try to make light of anyone, but our kids knew those two teams weren't contenders in this district, said Bickham, who led the Brahmas to the Class 2A Division I state title in 1998.

They know Cooper is who we have to beat for the district championship, and they are in a mood like when we played (Class 3A teams) Hooks and Linden-Kildare earlier this year.

That mood is a nasty one, especially on the part of the defense, thus the smiles and grimaces on Bickham's face this week.

The kids have really stepped it up a notch. In fact, we've had to back them down a little so we don't kill one another, Bickham said. The hitting has been pretty ferocious.

The Brahmas have outscored seven opponents this season by a combined total of 296-29, and it could have been worse had Bickham not called off the dogs in lopsided wins over Arp (48-0), Class 3A Clarksville (57-8), Class 3A Linden-Kildare (41-7), Prairiland (52-0) and Paris Chisum (63-0). The Bulls have been tested just twice this season, notching 21-14 and 14-0 wins over Class 3A Hooks and Mount Vernon.

The offense has been unstoppable, despite the fact the starters rarely play more than one half. The defense, paced by a front five Bickham calls the best he has coached, has been even better, allowing 16.4 rushing yards, 70.5 total yards and just over four points per contest.

Nose tackle Anthony Stanley, ends Jerome Cobbins and James Gilmore and tackles Delwynn Johnson and Otis Cobbins have combined for 234 tackles, 16 sacks, 10 forced fumbles, nine recovered fumbles, three touchdowns, two blocked punts and a safety.

Stanley has 57 tackles, five sacks, five forced fumbles and a blocked punt to lead the group.

Jerome Cobbins has 49 tackles and three sacks,

Johnson 43 tackles and four sacks,

Otis Cobbins 55 tackles and three sacks and Gilmore 30 tackles, one sack and a pair of fumble recoveries for touchdowns.

Linebacker Hercules Tarver has chipped in with 55 tackles and two of the team's 10 interceptions.

We know we'll be tested this week, Bickham said. Cooper has a good football team, and they are one of the top scoring teams in the state. They have a huge offensive line and a good tailback, but we feel like they are playing into our strong point which is stopping the run.

The Bulls haven't exactly been slumping on offense.

Led by Boyd, who last week became the school's all-time leading rusher, the Brahmas are averaging 381 yards and 42.2 points per contest. Boyd has carried just 18 times in routs of Prairiland and Paris Chisum, but he has averaged 21.2 yards per carry and scored on six of the 13 attempts. He has rushed for 926 yards and 14 touchdowns on 82 carries this season, and his 4,215 yards in three-plus seasons broke a school record previously held by James Talton of 3,968 yards set from 1991-93.

I really don't care about the statistics, Boyd said. It's good to let the other guys play in a blowout. That helps me stay healthy and able to help out on defense. Bickham had just one prediction for Friday's contest.

I don't know if this will turn into a defensive battle or an offensive battle, but it is a great matchup and folks better get there early if they want a seat because there won?t be any empty ones.

Paul Pewitt defeats previously unbeaten Cooper, 13-9

COOPER, Texas-Stephen Sperry caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Matt Haynes early in the fourth quarter to give top-ranked Paul Pewitt a hard-earned 13-9 District 14-2A win over previously undefeated Cooper Friday night.

The win lifts the unbeaten Brahmas to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in district play. Cooper falls to 7-1 and 2-1.

Cooper led 9-6 when Drew Conley kicked a 22-yard field goal with 2:11 left in the third quarter.

Conley tossed an 18-yard pass to Billy Mayberry for the game's first touchdown late in the first quarter. Pewitt tied the score on Kenny Boyd's 32-yard touchdown run in the second period.

Boyd finished the game with 104 yards on 13 carries and 1 interception. Pewitt had 234 total yards, 190 rushing, to Cooper's 141.

The Brahmas committed the game's only turnover on a fumble.

No. 1 Pewitt escapes Cooper, 13-9

By Dan Sansing

The Paris News

Published October 24, 1999 2:42 PM CDT

COOPER - David almost slayed Goliath Friday at Bulldog Stadium as the Cooper Bulldogs carried a 9-6 lead entering the fourth quarter, but eventually lost to the top-ranked Omaha Paul Pewitt Brahmas 13-9.

The battle of two unbeaten teams lived up to its billing with an estimated crowd of 3,000 on hand for what proved to be a largely defensive struggle.

A large line waited outside the ticket gate at 5:30 p.m., and cars overflowed the stadium parking lot onto nearby roads and a residential area as spectator after spectator arrived at the game.

No one at the game could remember a matchup at the stadium with higher attendance.

The Associated Press high school poll ranked the Brahmas as the number one 2A team in the state this week, with Pewitt (4-0, 8-0) receiving 193 total votes and 16 first place votes.

Cooper (3-1, 7-1) did not rank in the top ten, but did receive 3 votes in the poll.

The Bulldogs likely will receive more votes after a very strong showing against Pewitt.

"I'm very, very proud of everybody ... the community, the fan support, it was just great," said Cooper head coach Joey Florence. "We played as hard as we could," he said. "It was a great football game." Florence praised the play of his team, especially the Cooper defense, which he said has made vast improvements since last year.

Pewitt blew out Cooper 61-14 last year en route to the Division I Class 2A state championship.

Florence said he knew he did not want to get into a shootout with Pewitt, so the Bulldogs developed a game-plan with a focus on tough defensive play that would keep the game close. "We did exactly what we wanted to do," he said. "We had a chance at the end."

An apparent touchdown in the first quarter that was ruled a fumble with a touchback would have changed the complexion of the game.

Jason Demidio made a 15 yard run to the goal line, but officials ruled he did not break the plane of the goal before fumbling and the Brahmas took the ball on the 20 yard line for a touchback, denying Cooper the score.

Vernard Wilkerson had set up the drive by returning the opening kickoff 61 yards to the Pewitt 29 yard line.

A fumble by Pewitt's Jimmy Wilkerson at the 19 yard line was recovered by Cooper linebacker Adam Shaw and set up the first Cooper score.

Cooper capitalized on the Pewitt fumble with an 18 yard pass from Drew Conley to Billie Mayberry, who rumbled in for the Cooper score with nine seconds to left in the first quarter.

Cooper running back Jason Demidio, who already passed the 1,000 yard mark this season, finished with 85 yards on 18 carries. He now has 1,242 for the year. Brahmas running back Kenny Boyd led all rushers in the game with 105 yards on 13 carries with one touchdown.

Pewitt head coach Ronnie Bickham said he was impressed with the way the Bulldogs played.

"They've improved from last year. They proved a lot. They played hard and their kids did a great job out there," Bickham said.

With the win, Pewitt, the largest school in District 14-2A, wrapped up a playoff spot as the Class 2A Division I team.

Cooper can clinch a playoff spot as a smaller (Division II) school with a win at Honey Grove Friday.

A 33 yard scamper by Kenny Boyd tied the game 6-6 with 9:12 left in the first half. The game remained tied when the buzzer sounded at half time.

The Bulldogs attempted an onside kick by Danny Wall to start the second half, but the Brahmas recovered and drove to the Cooper 19, then were hit for consecutive losses in the backfield by Demidio.

Cooper got the ball back on their own 26 yard line.

A 33 yard run by Demidio and a personal foul tacked onto the end of a Vernard Wilkerson run took Cooper all the way to the Pewitt 7, but the Bulldogs were forced to attempt a field goal facing fourth down on the three yard line.

Drew Conley's 21 yard field goal split the uprights and pulled Cooper ahead 9-6 heading into the final quarter.

After punishing runs by 230-pound running back Delwynn Johnson, the Brahmas scored on a 15 yard pass play from Stephen Sperry to Matthew Haynes to pull ahead 13-9.

But a crucial first down pass play from Pewitt quarterback Jimmy Wilkerson to tight end Hercules Tarver helped the Brahmas run the clock down to the two-minute mark.

Boyd picked off a Conley pass to end Cooper's last possession, and the Brahmas ran the clock to end the game and pull out the win.

BOGATA, Texas--Top-ranked Paul Pewitt scored 35 points in the first quarter and coasted to a 69-6 victory over Rivercrest here Friday night, clinching at least a tie for first place in District 14-2A.

The Brahmas stretched their winning streak over the last two years to 19 games and are 9-0 for the season, 4-0 in league play. Only Honey Grove stands between the Brahmas and an undefeated regular season.

Kenny Boyd ran for 150 yards and a touchdown on just seven carries and also returned a pass interception 29 yards for a score, one of three on the night for the Bulls.

Delwynn Johnson carried only twice, but gained 89 yards and scored on runs of 27 and 62 yards.

Jimmy Wilkerson ran for one touchdown, passed for another and returned an interception 17 yards for a score. Wilkerson hit Kedrick Wright for a 35-yard score and snaeked over from one yard out.

Wright scored another touchdown on a 47-yard interception return, Desmond Jones ran 15 yards for a TD and Stephen Sperry, who threw last week's winning touchdown pass against Cooper, had a 9-yard scoring run.

PEWITT FOOTBALL

By Bob Runyon

JOHNTOWN - A famous warrior once announced, "We have met the enemy, and he is ours!" On the other hand, an equally famous but not as dour comic strip character said, "We have met the enemy and he is us!"

Rivercrest's Rebels met Class 2-A's top ranked Paul Pewitt Brahmas and were destroyed here Friday night, 69-6, as RHS quarterback Cody Wolfe was intercepted six times in an all-out passing attack that produced just eight completions in 34 tries. Of the six thefts, three were returned for touchdowns.

The win was the 9th straight for the Brahmas in 1999 and posted them to a 4-0 showing thus far in District 14-AA. The Rebels fell to 3-6 for the year and 1-3 in loop competition.

From the first play, Pewitt dominated the home team. After the opening kickoff was returned to the Rebel 24, defensive end James Gilmore tipped a pass at the line of scrimmage and defensive back Kenny Boyd grabbed it at the 29 and threaded his way through the Rebs and into the endzone.

With just 20 seconds gone, Tramond Hawkins kicked the first of his nine PATs to give the Bulls a 7-0 lead.

On the ensuing series, Michael Ray Galloway gained a yard on first down, but two passes by Wolfe were incomplete and the Rebels had to punt. The punt was partially blocked by noseguard Anthony Stanley, punctuating the Pewitt defensive effort and setting the tone for Rivercrests' night.

The Pewitt defense, the top squad in Northeast Texas, had given up an average of 27.9 rushing yards per game through the first eight weeks. This night, thanks to several sacks of Wolfe, the Brahmas held the Rebels run game to (-33) yards.

Rivercrest fared much better through the airways, which were not all that friendly despite 102 yards and a TD by Wolfe. The score came in the second quarter with 49 seconds left when Keith Hines took a 13-yard scoring shot from the strong-armed Rebels quarterback. Wolfe's effort had to be applauded just for the fact that he survived the Pewitt onslaught, which put him on his back many times in the game.

Pewitt got 150 yards rushing from senior Kenny Boyd, who pushed his season rushing stats to 1,184 yards. Another senior and a starter on the defensive line, Delwynn Johnson, got 89 yards on just two carries from the fullback position. Both totes resulted in touchdowns.

After taking the very early lead, Pewitt scored again with 8:09 on t he first quarter clock when Johnson got his first score on a 27-yard run. The score went to 21-0 at the 5:32 juncture when junior receiver Kedrick Wright caught a 35-yard TD pass from quarterback Jimmy Wilkerson.

Boyd snapped off a 65-yard run with 2:47 to go, then Wilkerson called his own number and got the ball in from the 1 with two seconds left in the stanza to make it 35-0.

Just 13 seconds into the second period, Wilkerson snagged a Wolfe pass and ran it in from 17 yards out to give Pewitt a 42-0 advantage.

With 5:21 to go in the half, The Rebels mounted their only scoring drive beginning at the Rebels 27.

After Galloway lost four yards on first down, Wolfe passed for 10 yards to running back J.C. King. Four plays later Wolfe passed for 19 yards to Josh Griffin, then found Griffin again for 14 yards to the Pewitt 11.

Facing a fourth down at the 13, Wolfe tossed the scoring shot to Keith Hines with 49 seconds to play in the half. The conversion failed.

Just before the Rebels march, sophomore Desmond Jones had given the Bulls a 48-0 lead on a 15-yard run.

In the third quarter, Johnson scored on a 62-yard run, and Stephen Sperry scored from nine yards out to make it 62-6.

Wright added insult to injury when he intercepted a pass and returned it 47 yard with 7:13 left in the game. It was the second theft for Wright on the night.

Linebacker Hercules Tarver also had an interception. Rivercrest had little to cheer about, but the game bunch from north of the Sulphur River did recover two Pewitt fumbles. Defensive tackle Otis Cobbins recovered a Rebel miscue.

Next week, the Brahmas will finish the regular season at home against Honey Grove.

Paul Pewitt punts Rivercrest Rebels, 69-6

JOHNTOWN - State-ranked Paul Pewitt rolled up 184 yards offense and 35 points against Rivercrest - and then they started the second quarter.

The Brahmas went on to defeat the Rebels 69-6 to clinch the District 14-2A championship and remain undefeated in league play.

Fleet-footed running back Kenny Boyd proved his value to the Brahmas on both sides of the ball. Boyd snatched a pass from Rebel quarterback Cody Wolfe and raced 28 yards to score a defensive touchdown with 11:40 on the clock in the first period, then minutes later went 65 yards for another score on his way to a 153-yard rushing performance on six carries. He saw little action in the second half.

Pewitt quarterback Jimmy Wilkerson also worked the ball both ways. He tossed a 35-yard pass to Kedrick Wright, then pushed across from the one for a score of his own and intercepted a Wolfe pass, going 17 yards for another score.

Wright scored later on a 52-yard pass interception, Delwynn Johnson reached the end zone on runs of 28 and 62, Desmond Jones run in from 16 yards out and Stephen Sperry had a 10-yard touchdown run.

Defensively, Pewitt was superior, holding the Rebels to a minus 17 yards on the ground in 22 carries, but Rivercrest did manage to find 93 yards through the air on 7-of-27 completions, one a 14-yard scoring strike from Wolfe to Keith Hines that finally put the Rebels on the scoreboard late in the third quarter.

But four of Wolfe's passes ended up in Pewitt hands, with the Brahmas running three of them back for touchdowns.

One of the most outstanding parts of Pewitt's game was the kicking of Tramond Hawkins, who hit 9-0f-10 points after and put seven kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks.

Pewitt Looks Ahead (Not)

By: Bob Runyon

Paul Pewitt, ranked number one in Class AA and undefeated in nine starts this year and a winner in 19 of its last 19 games, faces 6-3 Honey Grove Friday at Brahmas Stadium.

Game time is 7:30, but the Brahmas are more interested in next week's round one playoff game against Farmersville, right?

When pigs fly, according to Pewitt Head Coach Ronnie Bickham. "We aren't looking ahead to Farmersville or anyone else," Bickham said of Friday's game against the Warriors. "There are lots of reasons we need to focus on them and no one else."

Bickham pointed out that a win over Honey Grove would give the Bulls a perfect 10-0 season. No other Pewitt team has accomplished that. He also says that a win would give the Brahmas a second straight undefeated 14-AA championship.

"It comes down to pride and wanting to finish up on a high note and take that momentum into the playoffs," he said.

Also, according to the Bulls bossman, the game offers a chance to polish up for the playoffs.

Despite a 69-6 win over Rivercrest last week, Bickham says his charges could use some polish in certain places. One of those is along the offensive line, which still needed work after a few breakdowns in the 13-9 win over Cooper.

"We've been working on it, and other things," Bickham said. One change fans may notice Friday is at left guard, where senior defensive lineman Jarome Cobbins will start.

"His enthusiasm and determination to stay with the block all the way to the end of the play has given us a spark this week," Bickham said.

Pewitt, 4-0 in 14-AA, will be the Division I rep in the playoffs again this year, but Honey Grove's two losses put the Warriors in jeopardy of missing the playoffs. Cooper is in as a Division II participant, and Chisum's win last week over Honey Grove gives it an up on the last spot.

But strange things tend to occur in Texas high school football. If Honey Grove beats Pewitt, and Chisum loses to Rivercrest, then guess who gets a playoff spot?

Last week, a 31-7 loss to Cooper came as a result of more than 400 yards given up by the Warriors defense. The offense got 63 yards from James Fletcher. Quarterback John Milton, who passed for 66 yards, also scored the only Warriors TD of the game on a one-yard run.

Senior Kenny Boyd leads Pewitt's ground game with 1,184 yards rushing. The Bulls defense, top-ranked in northeast Texas, has shut out five of nine opponents in 1999. Pewitt has allowed just 37 points, and set the Rebels back for a minus-33 yards rushing last week.

But, as Boomer says: "That's why they play the game!"
